Abstract PICOLON (Pure Inorganic Crystal Observatory for LOw-energy Neutr(al)ino) aims to search for cosmic dark matter by high purity NaI(Tl) scintillator. We developed extremely pure NaI(Tl) crystal by hybrid purification method. The recent result of 210Pb in our NaI(Tl) is less than 5.7 μBq/kg. We will report the test experiment in the low-background measurement at Kamioka Underground Laboratory. The sensitivity for annual modulating signals and finding dark matter particles will be discussed.

Abstract The scintillation characteristics of a thallium-doped sodium iodide (NaI(Tl)) crystal with dimensions of 0.6 cm× 0.6 cm× 2 cm were studied by attaching a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) directly to the crystal over a temperature range of 93–300 K. The scintillation light output and decay time were measured by irradiating 59.54 keV γ-rays with a 241Am source. We observed an approximately 20% increase in the light yield at 230 K compared with that at room temperature. Under these conditions, NaI(Tl) crystals with SiPM readout can be suitable for future dark matter search detectors.

NaI(Tl) large crystals are applied in the search for galactic dark matter particles through their elastic scattering off the target nuclei in the detector by measuring the scintillation signal produced. However, energies deposited in the form of nuclear recoils are small, which added to the low efficiency to convert that energy into scintillation, makes that events at or very near the energy threshold, attributed either to radioactive backgrounds or to spurious noise (nonbulk NaI(Tl) scintillation events), can compromise the sensitivity goals of such an experiment. DAMA/LIBRA experiment, using 250 kg NaI(Tl) target, reported first evidence of the presence of an annual modulation in the detection rate compatible with that expected for a dark matter signal just in the region below 6 keVee (electron equivalent energy). In the frame of the ANAIS (Annual modulation with NaI Scintillators) dark matter search project a large and long effort has been carried out in order to understand the origin of events at very low energy in large sodium iodide detectors and develop convenient filters to reject those nonattributable to scintillation in the bulk NaI(Tl) crystal. 40K is probably the most relevant radioactive contaminant in the bulk for NaI(Tl) detectors because of its important contribution to the background at very low energy. ANAIS goal is to achieve levels at or below 20 ppb natural potassium. In this paper we will report on our effort to determine the 40K contamination in several NaI(Tl) crystals, by measuring in coincidence between two (or more) of them. Results obtained for the 40K content of crystals from different providers will be compared and prospects of the ANAIS dark matter search experiment will be briefly reviewed.

Abstract The SABRE experiment aims to detect the annual modulation of the dark matter interaction rate by means of ultra-high purity NaI(Tl) crystals. It focuses on the achievement of a very low background to carry out a model-independent and high sensitivity test of the long-standing DAMA result. SABRE has recently completed a Proof-of-Principle (PoP) phase at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory, devoted to assess the radiopurity of the crystals. The results on the radiopurity of a 3.4-kg NaI(Tl) crystal scintillator grown within the SABRE Collaboration and operated underground in the SABRE-PoP setup, will be reported and discussed. The amount of potassium content in the crystal, determined by direct counting of 40K, is found to be < 4.7 ppb at 90% CL. The average background rate in the 1-6 keV energy region of interest (ROI) is 1.20 ± 0.05 counts/day/kg/keV, which is, for the first time, comparable with DAMA/LIBRA-phasel. Our background model indicates that this rate is dominated by 210Pb, and that about half of this contamination is located in the PTFE reflector wrapped around the crystal. Ongoing developments aimed at a further reduction of radioactive contaminants in the crystal indicates that a background rate ≤ 0.3 counts/day/kg/keV in the ROI is within reach. This value represents a benchmark for the development of next-generation NaI(Tl) detector arrays for the direct detection of dark matter particles.

Abstract Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE υNS) has an important role in measuring neutrino properties and proving non-standard interactions. Neutrino Elastic-scattering Observation with NaI(Tl) experiment (NEON) aims to detect this CE υNS in a NaI(Tl) crystal using reactor anti-electron neutrino at Hanbit nuclear power plant. NEON detector, which is installed 24 m distance away from the active reactor core, consists of a 15 kg NaI(Tl) in the radiation shielding structures including a 700 L liquid scintillator. Data taking has started from December 2020, which includes 1-month reactor-off period. We report the current status of NEON experiment in this talk.

The SABRE experiment aims to detect the annual modulation of the dark matter interaction rate by means of ultra-high purity NaI(Tl) crystals immersed in a liquid scintillator (LS) active veto. Located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, in Italy, it is currently in a Proof-of-Principle phase to assess the radiopurity of the crystals as well as the efficiency of the LS veto. The results on the radiopurity of a 3.4 kg NaI(Tl) crystal grown within the SABRE Collaboration will be presented and discussed. The crystal has an unprecedented low potassium content, which has been determined with direct counting to be lower than 4.7 ppb at 90% C.L.. The average background rate in the [1-6] keV energy region of interest is (1.20 ± 0.05) counts/day/kg/keV, which represents an important breakthrough after DAMA/LIBRA. Moreover, further developments based on data from zone refining purification tests are discussed, and a projected background rate for future SABRE detectors lower than 0.2 counts/day/kg/keV in [1-6] keV is determined. Assuming this value as the average background level in the region of interest, after 3 years of data taking with a total mass of 50 kg, the SABRE experiment is expected to be sensitive to spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross sections down to 1.3×10−42 cm2 for a WIMP mass of 30–40 GeV. With the predicted background level, based on data reported in this thesis, the SABRE experiment will definitely probe the DAMA/LIBRA finding with high statistical significance in a few years.

Résumé :
The response of low energy nuclear recoil in NaI(Tl) is investigated in the following experiment. Such detectors have been used recently to search for evidence of dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). NaI(Tl) crystal response to nuclear recoil energy deposition is a key element in these searches. I discuss the cosmological and experimental motivations for these experiments, followed by an overview of the physics of direct detection and current relevant WIMP search experiments. With the experiment motivations covered, the details of NaI(Tl) detectors are reviewed. The specifics of our experiment are laid out including the neutron production, neutron beam calibration, shielding optimization, experimental design and setup. Then the crystal response calibration studies and Geant4 simulations are discussed followed by the final quenching factor values and uncertainties. This experiment measured quenching factors for sodium recoils in the energy range of (9 keV-40 keV) of 19%-27% QF. These results are similar to current published measurements. Interesting features of the QF measurements include an increase at low energies and a dip in the values at 30 keV, the iodine K-shell absorption edge. The goal of this experiment was to add valuable measurements of nuclear recoils at low energies that are relevant to low-mass WIMP experiments. Future plans will improve and expand on these measurements in order to better understand the response of NaI(Tl) at low energies.

In this paper, Neutron Activation Technique (NAT) is used for neutron flux mapping in homogenous boron concentrated paraffin wax. For this purpose, activator detectors were prepared by irradiating process in an Americium-Beryllium (241Am–9Be) neutron field for the required time period to induce approximate saturation activity. After this, the induced activity was measured by time coincidence method using a Sodium iodide (thallium) NaI (Tl) crystal detector and organic scintillation “Anthracene” detector for gamma ray and beta particle detection respectively. The activator detectors were activated at different radii from the irradiator neutron source in boron mixed paraffin wax. The flux profile was mapped by measuring induced activity. Errors in measurements and calculations were estimated by Poisson distribution.

Development of selective adsorbents is very important subject for the effective multi-nuclide decontamination related to the severe accident of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear power Station (Fukushima NPS). In this study, the adsorption properties for nine kinds of zeolites (Zeolite A, Zeolite X, Zeolite Y, Zeolite L, Modified Chabazite, Phillipsite, Erionite, Synthetic Mordenite, Natural Mordenite and Clinoptilolite) are evaluated in the presence of sodium salts, boric acid and seawater. The present study deals with (1) selective adsorption properties for single nuclide ions (Cs+, Sr2+, Eu3+, I−, UO22+, Am3+ and NpO2+), and (2) multi-nuclide adsorption properties of 26 elements (typical elements in Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS) in Fukushima NPP-1) for the above zeolites. The distribution coefficient (Kd, ml/g) and uptake (R, %) were estimated by batch method using NaI (Tl) scintillation counter, ICP-AES and AAS. Zeolites with different crystal structures have the diversity of the adsorption selectivity for various radioactive nuclides. Chabazite, mordenite and clinoptilolite with lantern or tunnel structure were very effective for the adsorption of monovalent Cs+ ions even in real seawater. Zeolite A and X with three-dimensional cage structures were effective for the adsorption of divalent Sr2+ and Co2+ ions under the practical condition (30% diluted seawater). Zeolite L was effective for the adsorption of Eu3+ ions under the practical condition. As for I− adsorption, Ag-zeolites are found to be effective, and the uptake (%) of I− (NaI in pure water) for Ag-zeolites was estimated to be above 98% in pure water. As for actinoid adsorption, the distribution profile, Kdvs pH, had a maximum depending on the hydrolysis pH. Zeolite A, Zeolite L and Zeolite X showed an excellent adsorption property for UO22+, Am3+ and NpO2+, respectively. Selective adsorption tendencies of different zeolites were evaluated for 26 elements referred to ALPS. Comparing the uptake results for different zeolites, the following tendency of adsorbability was observed. Mordenite had adsorption selectivity for monovalent alkali metal ions of Rb+ and Cs+. Zeolite A and X exhibited relatively high adsorption selectivity for divalent ions of Sr2+ and Co2+. Zeolite L had adsorption selectivity for trivalent lanthanide ions such as Ce3+ and Eu3+. These tendencies were the same as those without boric acid. Thus, the zeolites with diverse adsorption selectivity are effective for the multi-nuclide decontamination of radioactive contaminated water.
