The thesis deals with the complexities involved within the conversion of an old building to an art museum. The restoration of a building is by itself a complicated problem, conjuring up questions about the relationship between the old and new parts of the structure. The reuse of the old building as a museum of art adds a new set of relationships, multiplying the interactions and enhancing the complexity. The analysis of the problems is st:rUctured in two parts: The first is a theoretical discussion of generic questions and issues linked with the museum as an institution on the one hand, and with the preservation of the built environment on the other. The second joins the two fields of the above discussion together, by referring to the particular kind of building: the museum within an old structure. This is done by means of analysis of selected examples. An artificial separation of the two fields is again used as a tool for the analysis. The discussion focuses on the concrete expression of specific choices in both of the fields, from which, in conclusion, general deductions are drawn.

The project proposes a museum that acts as public infrastructure, situated across the boundary between east and west Oslo. The architecture of the museum is a continuous linear element that acts as a bridge through the different urban conditions from one side of the Aker River to the other, becoming the primary circulation path, reinventing the public street and positioning the cultural value of the exhibits alongside the daily life of the city where it infiltrates the exhibition spine of the museum. The imposition of this system questions contemporary definitions of Norwegian identity through the relationships developed between the historic narrative of the museum and the slices of city life that it presents at the intersections. Several registers of content pull through the museum - exhibition, production and public space. The collections explore what it means to be Norwegian, through the art of Edvard Munch and artifacts from Norway's viking past presented in a timeline of development, all consistently bracketed by visible processes of restoration and production needed to keep the museum operational - undermining through process the traditional modes of cultural legitimation of the museum and allowing for an imposition of a alternate kind of user driven identity for the city.

Washington, D.C. is a city that is designed to serve an entire nation; yet, as a result of this, its own history and people can seem to be lost in the shadow of the federal city. With an abundance of museums throughout the city, the museum that is needed, but no longer exists, is one for the District itself. This omissionleaves a tremendous gap in historical knowledge and no representation focused on the character of the city itself. How can we fulfill this need in a way that is unique to this specific city and would provide more than an exhibit by allowing people to be surrounded by and contribute to the accumulated evolution of their history? Adaptive reuse encourages the gradual unearthing of historical inspiration, which allows representation of existing and past local populations. For my thesis, I sought to fulfill this need by turning to the existing fabric of the city, learning from it, and eventually employing adaptive reuse techniques to unify the existing framework with the new program.

This thesis is an exploration of the way design facilitates people’s understanding of a place. Hermeneutic theorist Hans Georg Gadamer wrote that we belong to history in the “splendid magic of immediately mirroring the present in the past and the past in the present”. Hermeneutics is the study of how we interpret non-verbal communication. Researching the history of the site on multiple scales guided design decisions that will intuitively shape visitor’s comprehension of Pump House Park’s past, present and future relationship with the city.

The present text discusses how museums work technically with the continuous increase of the digital cultural objects present in the museological institutions and that also become part of its cultural patrimony. The objective is to demonstrate that the collaborative environment of the Web Network of Museums of the State of Rio de Janeiro can stimulate the offer of integrated information services with the other cultural institutions through the digital curation of this material, encouraging the sharing and reuse of these cultural digital collections. The methodology of this research is developed in three stages: literature review, identification of ongoing experiments in digital curation and reuse of digital objects and oral interviews. It was possible to confirm the digital curatorship as a resource for the control and maintenance of the technical treatment of cultural digital objects, reusing them for the expansion of knowledge and dissemination of information and at the end, some of the new services that could be offered by the Web Network of Museums.
O presente texto discorre sobre como os museus trabalham tecnicamente com o aumento contínuo dos objetos digitais culturais presentes nas instituições museológicas e que se tornam também parte do seu patrimônio cultural. O objetivo é demonstrar que o ambiente colaborativo da Rede Web de Museus do Estado do Rio de Janeiro pode dinamizar a oferta de serviços informacionais integrados com as demais instituições culturais através da curadoria digital deste material, incentivando o compartilhamento e o reuso destes acervos digitais culturais. A metodologia desta pesquisa se desenvolve em três etapas: revisão de literatura, identificação de experiências em curso na curadoria digital e no reuso dos objetos digitais e entrevistas orais. Foi possível confirmar a curadoria digital como recurso para o controle e a manutenção do tratamento técnico dos objetos digitais culturais, proporcionando o reuso dos mesmos em prol da expansão do conhecimento e difusão da informação e ao final, foram identificados alguns dos novos serviços que podem ser oferecidos pela Rede Web de Museus.

The work provides a slight and quick resume about the long history of growth of the main dock of the city of Lisbon, from when it was center of the vast and wide Portugues Colonial Empire, one of the powerful and expanded empires of all times, following the times of glory of commerce to periods of decline, from the industrial times on late ’80 of nineteenth century to a gradual abandonment times of the last decades of the twentieth century. Then are explained the dynamics and changes in uses and the destinations of an area that start from the train station (plus metro station) of Cais do Sodré, passing areas along the riverside, including areas of abounded factories, offices, building of various purpose of use, night clubs and discotheques, still active dry docks, the harbour of Alcantara, a dock in use for container’s storage and various other areas in the middle way between abandonment and some timid and shy uses of the citizens. After all a series of analysis of mobility of the present activities, about the metabolism of the area in study, are developed in the project of landscape architecture possibilities and ideas for the rebirth, a better organization, the revitalization, recover and revenge of this wide dockland area so central and so forgotten

A presente dissertação analisa três edifícios ecléticos que constituem um conjunto monumental nas bordas da Praça da Alfândega de Porto Alegre, todos reciclados no ultimo quarto do século XX e passagem para o século XXI: a Delegacia Fiscal, o Correio e Telégrafos, e o Banco Nacional do Comércio, de autoria de Theo Wiedersphan, hoje abrigando respectivamente o Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul, Memorial do Rio Grande do Sul, e Santander Cultural. A análise se faz em três momentos: o de funcionamento pleno, o de desuso e o de novo projeto, assinados por Ediolanda Liedke, Nico e Ceres Rocha, e Roberto Loeb, privilegiando questões de composição ao invés de discussões estilísticas. O capítulo I traça breve panorama sobre a Praça da Alfândega e seu entorno seguido de informações biográficas sobre Wiederspahn. Os capítulos II, III, e IV desenvolvem os três estudos de caso. O capítulo V traz comparações e algumas conclusões sobre os edifícios. Uma breve reflexão acerca dos referenciais teórico-metodológicos é proposta em anexo.
This paper analyses three eclectic buildings that constitutes a monumental set in the edges of the Alfandega Square in Porto Alegre, all of them recycled in the last quarter of the XX’s and the XXI’s: the “Delegacia Fiscal”, “Correios e Telégrafos”, and “Banco Nacional do Comércio” projected by Theo Wiedersphan, today housing, respectively the “Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul”, “Memorial do Rio Grande do Sul”, and “Santander Cultural”. The analysis occurs in three moments: the full operation, the disuse, and the new project, signed by Ediolanda Liedke, Nico and Ceres Rocha, and Roberto Loeb, and privileges topics of composition instead of stylistic ones. Chapter I points a quick overview on the Alfândega Square and its surroundings, followed by biographical informations about Wiedersphan. Chapters II, III, and IV develop three case studies. Chapter V brings comparisons and some conclusions about the buildings. A quick reflection about the theorical-methodological references is proposed on annex.

The purpose for this research is studying accessible software/hardware in museum, and study subjects were the museum which is reuse of existing space. The advantages of reform and renovation on reuse of existing space are follows: "no need for the construction of new buildings", "unique charms of historical buildings (such as" scenarios" and "nostalgia" etc.) may be its selling points". However, from "cultural heritage preservation" point of view, in the reform of the hardware, there are laws restricting, so for to reform to accessible hardware is not easy, and this is the disadvantage of reuse of the existing space. Therefore, the aims for this research is studying software policies to eliminate problems might occur on the museum’s hardware, which was reused existing space. In this research, to the Kaohsiung Museum of History as the research object, it is a local museum. Select the museum is to explore how to establish the museum which all people can easily participate in, it means barrier-free between the museum and all people. The conclusion of this dissertation is the result of data collecting, interviewing, and questionnaire method which leads to: A) The need for evaluation mechanism to implement policies for the accessibility by a third party. B) In the absence of barrier-free education to the circumstances, the consensus of a accessible environment can not be established between museum staffs. Thus on accessible services which each of the staff are providing, there will be differences in quality. The proposition is made by the conclusion of the research above: 1) Recruit "museum's supporters", who are willing to evaluating its accessible environment. 2) Draw up the Guidelines of accessible service and guidelines for accessible display.

Since1990, the 114 year-old Takao Station has experienced the blooming history of Kaohsiung as a witness, such as the opening event of Railway Spur Line, and it led to the economic prosperity of industry ,the construction of Kaohsiung Harbor and the reclamation of Hamasen brought the origin of transportation, and then “Takao Station” has changed its name several times, it seems to be able to see the changes of city, economy, and lifestyle through Takao Station. Kaohsiung City Government has listed Takao Station as Historical Building in 2003, in the improving and developing progress of the city, and the TRA’s abolition, railway transportation has to say goodbye to its heyday and make a choice, nearly half of the body stations has stopped their transporting function, this phenomenon has brought along changes and transformation, the concern from related professionals and railway protection associations have made the government pay more attention to the necessity of saving old-station constructions , and put the station’s construction and other railway affiliated objects into the preserving scope of Takao Station since 2010.This is the historical background of Kaohsiung Takao Railway Story House. This space is supposed to be used as a message-changing platform between the government, civil groups, professionals (academics) and citizens. In order to match this goal, this study tries to clarify the following points: 1. Pointing out the current situation and difficulties of Kaohsiung Takao Railway Story House. 2. Finding out useable researching strategies through case studying by analyzing domestic and foreign cases. 3 .Interviewing people from different relevant fields, and summarized these interviews and their observing points. 4 .Summarizing practical and effective programs as advices and references for the relevant organizations and managers.

This interior design practicum investigates how narratives linked to the St-Boniface Fire Hall No.1, located in Winnipeg, can inform its adaptive reuse. Its oral history gathered in part through interviewing past users is spacialized into a physical realm. Narratives are translated into design elements by utilizing the creative process and analytical framework of the concept of mise en scène. Stories are analyzed and given structure through narratology as a theoretical approach. Post-Museum theory joined the concept of mise en scène by encouraging the visitors to become part of a living museum through sharing stories, thus becoming performers themselves. By utilizing narratives as a foundation, the interior weaves the existing heritage structure with new design interventions, therefore preserving the unique character of the building and incorporating its neighboring francophone community. The resulting design solution manifests itself as a mixed typology including a brewpub, an artist in residence studio and, a living museum.

Jan Cheng Elementary School, the city-class heritage in Taipei city, was built for Japanese’s primary education in Japanese-Occupied Period. In 1945 it was changed into government’s office until 1994, within the trend of preserve and reuse of monumental buildings , and the city government offices has replaced, Jan Cheng Elementary School was transformed into an art museum mainly shows the contemporary arts. The Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei (MOCA Taipei) was the first “contemporary art museum” and the first BOT case of monumental building transformed into museum, has its value on Taiwanese contemporary arts, the development of integration of cultural heritage and resources. Contemporary art now has coming into a diversified development through the changes of art forms and aesthetic experiences. The approaches and ways to present arts which was unable to be seen in the pass, has been brought into the museum now. But as the contemporary art are still developing and hard to give an accurate definition, being a “contemporary art museum” has confront a situation of how to show the art works with its hardware. Even if it can successfully shows the norms, it still may face the dilemma of catching the latest art developments. Compares to other museums which was built to show the arts, MOCA Taipei was protected by related laws because the status of being a monument. It had to reach the professional standards of museums, show the contemporary arts, and solve the practical problems and restrictions which was more complex and strict. Based on these, thesis here tried to discuss the related topics towards the background of MOCA Taipei, the contemporary arts and its exhibition halls. Sampled with the author interviewed the special exhibition 2012 in MOKA Taipei, discussed the interactions when contemporary arts placed into Jan Cheng Elementary School, the effects and adaptive when monuments transformed into museums. In the end to find the myth of the concepts and the possibilities of solutions.

This project involved the adaptive reuse of Maw Garage at 112 King Street. The building was transformed into an interpretive centre for Winnipeg’s Exchange District. As museums are faced with challenges of being relevant in today’s context, museum planners have started to shift their attention toward new approaches for the design of these environments. The purpose of this project was to investigate the evolving nature of the museum, and to determine how its role in society could be modified to better accommodate its audience’s needs. Society’s understanding of heritage in regard to the way we interpret, relate to, and connect with objects, each other, and environments has changed. A thorough review of literature resulted in a broad understanding of post-museum, constructivist learning, and public space theories. Combined with knowledge gained from the analysis of three precedents and programming, these theories enabled the development of a contemporary museum that challenges stereotypical ideas of the museum. This design proposal illustrates one possible way in which post-museum, constructivist learning, and public space theories could be used to design a new museum. Although the solution presented here is specific to Winnipeg’s Exchange District and the Heritage Winnipeg client, conceivably, the same theories could be used to design interpretive centres elsewhere in North America.

The new museology movement has undergone radical change in relationship to museums and visitors to shift their attention from collections toward visitors since the late twentieth century. For the past several decades in Taiwan, visitors adhered unconsciously only limited reality of objects under the political and economic power of the museums. Whereas the curfew was lifted by the government since 1987, the new museology was implied the concept of referring to the mass culture instead of political force, signs of a greater culture accessibly from being exclusive and socially divisive institutions have emerged, the museology movement towards a more visitor-centered ethos can be corresponding to the identity of an old-and-new history, community and city life in which communication between visitors and museums is launched. According to the definition from American Association of Museums (AAM) ascertains a museum as “a permanent institution, non-profit seeking…for the purpose of conserving and preserving, studying, interpreting, assembling, and exhibiting to the public for its instruction and enjoyment objects and specimens of educational and cultural value, including artistic, scientific, historical and technological material.”, it illustrats espcially the importance of public interest and the existence of leisure to the museums. Since 1990, there has been increasing attention to the new meseology for the museums, which makes their dreams come true especially into both unique and historical value of objects to the living for people in the community. A major attention of this research has been paid to explore the visitors experience at Taipei Story House which is an adaptive reuse house of heritage fromVilla Yuansan, and furthermore, to understand the interaction and feedback among individuals and groups of visitors of what they are seeking in museums. In particular, the results will be made to help visitors and museums to build their own concept of leisure in the context of new museology.

Museums are often regarded as an important indicator of urban development, as well as government policies to promote the facilitator, in many environmental protection and energy saving and that the introduction of the exhibition has started to pay attention to because of regular exhibitions derived from the "waste reduction" and "re-use" issues, especially the decoration of wood components often after becoming the first consumer waste, and also because in size, the surface of composite coating, modify the conditions and the wishes of the cost issues, rarely recycled. National Science and Technology Museum (hereinafter referred to as Science and Industry Museum) in Kaohsiung city park land with the Central Educational institutions directly under the special status, has been outstanding administrative performance for a unique image and start to implement ISO9001 certification services, in addition to an extension of the exhibition vitality Roving Exhibition shift, the establishment of a more active display Treasury resources management mechanism to play its characteristics and advantages of a broad area. In this study, combined with study of waste recycling, sustainable design review and life cycle environmental impact assessment tools for Science and Industry Museum display components wood waste into a resource materials from the current situation and problems to explore, through literature and the actual interview analysis, the future Museum resources reuse promotion strategy and implementation program. Chapter I of the research studies to restrict the scope and structure; the second chapter from the relevant literature and research, such as life-cycle assessment, sustainable design principles, recycling subject to aggregate; Chapter III of the current situation analysis of the museum, will investigate the Science and Industry Museum exhibition operation in wood use and the use of the current situation where demand; Chapter IV case studies and interviews with key figures for interviews with the two cases of common matrix simple life-cycle analysis of environmental impact assessment methodologies; fifth chapter conclusions and recommendations environmental protection and resources to assess the demand for reuse into the contract award stage, to carry out the entire process to improve the material recycling.

Abstract Designing museum exhibits is a cross-field professional practice that transforms scientific and artistic knowledge into common knowledge. While permanent exhibitions are limited by their invariability, temporary exhibitions offer a new kind of flexibility that has revolutionized the world of exhibitions, with innovation and experimentation characterizing the interpretation and technology of these exhibitions. Currently, energy conservation and carbon reduction have become the most widely discussed issues across disciplines throughout the world. With the industrialization of domestic museums and the new developments in exhibition events, introducing the 3R (Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse) concept in the planning, design, and execution process of exhibitions can significantly help in reducing expenses, conserving energy, and carbon emissions. By reviewing literature on domestic and foreign exhibition developments, the study intends to examine the nature, characteristics, and operational techniques of exhibitions. Using 4 Taiwanese exhibitions as case studies, the study presents a qualitative and quantitative 3R–analysis on the operating strategies and technical lapses of the exhibitions. The results of the study discuss the following: 1. design principles for 3R–exhibitions; 2. recommendations for awards and promotion of the 3R–concept; 3. advantages of 3R–principles; and 4. possible problems and difficulties of 3R-operation. The results contribute to the sustainable development of the domestic exhibition design industry in Taiwan.

Due to the wave of globalization, a contest between nations has transformed to a contest between cities in recent years. Meanwhile, in many industrialized countries, many manufactures have been forced to relocate their factories, develop new business models, or even go bankrupt because of the change of space conception, the increase of environmental awareness and the transformation of industrial structure. The original sites of factories have become idle spaces, resulting in the accelerated deterioration of environmental, social and safety issues in the urban areas. Therefore, how to reutilize the deserted space effectively become the most important issues needed to be solved with the first priority. In fact, the effective reuse of deserted space is not only the culture platform during the developing process of a city, but also is a great microscope to inspect the developing processes of a city. So, I would like to try my effort to apply the concept of eco-museum on the reutilization of idle space. The Kaohsiung, merged from Kaohsiung City and Kaohsiung County in 2011, is trying to develop a comprehensive plan of urban areas. To remain the local distinguishing features, The Kaohsiung may take advantage of its legacies of industrialization process such as many industrial architectures or space to develop its unique identification among cities around the world. For this reason, the factory of TCC in Southan will be a great research target for me because it is the first cement factory in Taiwan. In this study, I show you how to apply the concept of eco-museum instead of single-site preserve to the deserted space and how to build the symbiosis mechanism into the reutilization process of deserted space. Also, at the end of my paper, I make some suggestions based on this study for the government, TTC and the interested researchers, respectively.

This s tudy focused on how to restore and utilize again of Taiwan industrial heritage, the subject-matter Cha Xin Yuan, an un-used factory located at Chushan industrial zone, after the collective strength and consolidation, had transformed to the recreation and tourism area, and became the museum that carrying the important task of keeping local culture.This tea museum, not only explains from the process of tea making to the smoking area, but also introduces the place of original of the tea, and even get into the tea presents culture in Taiwan.In addition, combining the future visions and the continuous business manage ideas from the local industrial leaders, it gave Chusan Cha Xin Yuan Cultural Museum a clear and definite look. Through representing the characteristics of the local industry, restructuring the internal space and construction appearance, moreover the enforcement of the tourism management, Cha Xin Yuan Cultural Museum has developed gradually t o the sightseeing attractions and revitalizing local economy.In the past, Chushan industrial areas had to produce the necessary industry of the economy of people’s livelihood in order to cooperate to strengthen the need of rural economic construction. Because of the impact of globalization, and also the changes of economic way, some of the production plant stops operation or leaves unused, especially field of factory space and machines would directly affect the city’s development. The key component is for those old buildings preservation issues and how to create a culture of creativity within the tourism industry.This research is based on the evolution of industrial heritage, developing positioning, and for domestic and international case studies, further study on Chushan Cha Xin Yuan in the repair and reuse mechanism of development and transformation, space and management issues. Finally, the inspection of its transition into local sightseeing and cultural attraction and recommendations on required elements with the value of needed.

This research which is based on quantitative research method and tries to explore the influence of the tourists among the three major fact. The author invited the tourists who were visiting Yunlin Palm Puppets Museum in Yunlin as respondents to fill in the questionnaire.Likert Scale is used to analyze the validation results of three major factors which are caused by the tourist attributes.   There are three main parts in the questionnaire content: 1. Attractive feelings of tourist visiting. 2. Historic buildings activation and reuse mode. 3.Service quality.   The author got the data from the questionnaire, including the gender, age, marital status, education level and place of residence of the tourists, each of which was made comparison with the Likert scale. Finally, the level of visitors experience to each aspect is obtained.   The resuffs showed that the main attractivenesses of Yunlin Palm Puppets Museum are “geography environmental” “museum equipment” “thematic activities special exhibition” “experience activities,” and above all, “exhibition space” and “the atmosphere of architectural space” are the main factors. However, when it comes to the service quality, it is not good enough. For example, the exhibition space is too small, and there are not enough lavatories and places to rest. Also, visitors do not want to buy the souvenirs or goods there. As mentioned above make visitors feel unsatisfied.   The satisfaction of every question is different, either good or bad. Thus, according to the result of the satisfaction, the way of repurposing of unused space can be checked if it meets the expectation of the plan by working backward to it. It is hoped that the information obtained through the satisfaction survey of this study will help the competent authorities and operating units of Yunlin Palm Puppets Museum in future operational planning, or take as a reference to assist owners and operators of other monuments or historic buildings in the activation of these buildings.

Since Council for Culture Affairs (CCA), Executive Yuan started to promote the policy of “reuse of deserted space” in 2001, the transforming activities for culture space have been more vital. However, when large-scale industrial sites and old residences of high officials were emphasized, life and industrial space which was closely linked to citizens with local distinguishing features were not widespread valued. Fortunately, “Plan of Local Cultural Center” was proposed by CCA to encourage local residences to participate the preparation and reconstruction of local cultural center. Parts of private-owned deserted space could be successfully transformed to public space for reusing through the investment of private and public resources. Will the corporation of Public-Private Partnership be opportunity for reuse of deserted space in the future? This research was based on the theory of Public-Private Partnerships and Chihsing Tan Katsuo Museum in Hualien was selected as a case study sample to explore how to transform the private deserted space into public used space through Public-Private Partnerships with policy of local cultural center reconstruction promoted by CCA. This research went a step further to analyze the application of Public-Private Partnerships on reuse of deserted space. This research was focused on case study based on qualitative analysis. Literature review, depth interview and participant observation were adapted as research instrument. The research scope was from 2003, when the Chihsing Tan Katsuo Museum started to participate local cultural center until the end of year 2005 to explore the corporation process and interaction between public sector, private sector, the third sector and residences. Firstly, this research reviewed the literature of Public-Private Partnerships and reuse of deserted space respectively, to strengthen the research and to form the research questions. Then, with the fieldwork, observation, data analysis, and depth interview of stakeholder were employed to examine the multi-collected evidence for exploring, inducing, and creating conclusion and recommendation. In accordance with this case, through the Public-Private Partnerships of network governance, it is possible to earn parts of deserved benefits and feedbacks without harm the public interests. Traditional weak point of “national” or “market” singular service could be supplemented and then reach the “all-wins” situation based on the issues of reuse of deserted space. The created effects will gradually expend from space reconstruction to entire community. The confidences between participants, long-term and stable partnerships development, and similar visions reconstructions, etc., are the sufficient conditions for the success of Public-Private Partnerships. Facing universal values of “good governance” in modern society, with the Public-Private Partnerships experience of Chihsing Tan Katsuo Museum, provides a clear, positive and practicable pathway for environmental transformation.

The aim of this study is to confirm various factors, mainly by applying literature review and collection together with the Fuzzy Delphi Method, FDM. Then the Analytical Hierarchy Process, AHP is successively put in use to firmly establish the weight and consistency of the factors, which accordingly assists with the development of a more objective and precise assessment scale of fire prevention management for the reuse of historic buildings and monuments. Furthermore, to verify the importance of fire prevention measures adopted during 2017 National Museum of History disaster prevention drill in accordance with the acquired weight data. The conclusion of the research, through the analysis of FDM and AHP, the top five that experts and scholars place importance on are "daily fire prevention management and facility inspections ", " fire safety management law system", "fire resistant material design", "regular rescue education /drills", and "disaster prevention measures under construction " in terms of the key indicators of fire prevention management for the reuse of historic buildings and monuments. The daily fire prevention management and fireproofing inspection: in order to strengthen the management of fire prevention in normal times, the practice of periodic inspections and improvements of various types of on-site hazardous factors should rely mainly on the conformation of spatial characters and imagery. In the meantime, fire safety management law system: It is the basic legal source of Taiwan’s fire disaster relief system, and its content clearly defines the overall direction of Taiwan’s fire administrative governance. Secondly, the items of "fire resistant material design, regular rescue education /drills and disaster prevention measures under construction are also essential elements for the evaluation of the fire prevention management project for the reuse of historic buildings and monuments. All of these are in line with the core concept of protecting lives and safeguarding assets, starting from offering an environment without fire safety concerns for places like historic buildings and monuments.

Selecting appropriate reuse program for historic building is a complex decision problem which involve tangible and intangible value within numerous stakeholders, the process often been seen as time-consuming and controversial. This study focus on optimized the selection process by using an Integrated MultiCriteria decision-making (MCDM) method, the decision model is based on literature review and case studies, then criteria are elected by applying Fuzzy Delphi Method(FDM).The alternative is prioritize by ANP, and the final Outcome were demonstrated by the case of Sun Yat-sen Historical Museum in Taipei . Through case studies, 4 type of alternative were summarized, namely Education and exhibitions, Commercial use, Community Activities and Composite use, through literature review, 5 aspects and 20 criteria were summarized, after applying Fuzzy Delphi Method(FDM), 16 criteria were selected as critical criteria. The result from ANP showed the priority of reuse program for Sun Yat-sen Historical Museum were(from the highest rank to the lowest) Community Activities, Commercial use, Education and exhibitions, Composite use, and according to sensitivity analysis, when the weight of Economic aspect decrease or Social and Ecology aspects rose, the Commercial use alternative may become the most suitable alternative; when the weight of Economic and historical aspects rose the ranking of Community Activities alternative also increase. Based on above results, this study suggest decision making unit for the reuse of Sun Yat-sen Historical Museum should consider to implant the alternative of Community Activities and retain spatial flexibility for commercial functions in response to rapidly changing socio-economic environment. La ricerca si occupa delle trasformazioni degli edifici storici in spazi espositivi permanenti, quindi del dialogo che intercorre in queste operazioni tra restauro, riuso e museografia. L'importanza di attribuire una funzione al costruito storico ne assicura una conservazione e una re-immissione nella realtà contemporanea; una valorizzazione che deve essere compatibile, ovvero che metta al primo posto la qualità materiale del bene, le sue caratteristiche fisiche, tipologiche e formali. E' in questo scenario che si colloca il riuso culturale attuale, che assegna al museo un ruolo fondamentale nella promozione dello sviluppo sostenibile, in quanto strumento di salvaguardia del patrimonio culturale materiale e immateriale, mobile e immobile. E allora questa ricerca parte da alcune necessarie premesse: analizzare come il tema del riuso museale si sia nutrito nel tempo delle elaborazioni teoriche dei tre termini, con la volontà di tratteggiare gli scenari attuali della tematica. Nella prima parte vedremo quindi, in parallelo, come cresce la consapevolezza dell'importanza che un edificio ospiti una determinata funzione e della compatibilità degli interventi realizzati a questo proposito con la fabbrica storica. Nella seconda parte si entra nella contemporaneità. La convergenza delle operazioni di conservazione e progetto del nuovo all'interno dello sviluppo teorico del restauro, nonché la necessità di una tutela attiva del patrimonio culturale che vede nell'istituzione museale un presidio territoriale, si raffronta con i profondi mutamenti che hanno investito l'istituzione museale negli ultimi anni. E quindi si sceglie di partire proprio da questi mutamenti per individuare tre aree tematiche - relative alla spazialità del museo, alle nuove funzioni e identità urbana e ai modi di costruire una narrazione interna - da riportare nello studio delle esperienze di riuso museale attuale, alcune delle più importanti realizzazioni europee dell'ultimo ventennio. Le argomentazioni saranno sostenute, poi, dallo studio di due casi studio significativi, il Neues Museum di Berlino e il Museo della Montagna nel Forte di Bard, scelti per la componente critica, conservativa e creativa dei loro restauri e per la riconosciuta efficacia del loro programma museale. Il quadro d'insieme che si tratteggia, a partire proprio dai cambiamenti delle tematiche individuate, permetterà alla fine di definire le tendenze progettuali in atto in questo fenomeno sempre più in ascesa e di tratteggiarne le linee di sviluppo. -------- (english text) The research deals with the transformation of historical buildings into permanent exhibition spaces, and therefore deals with the dialogue that takes place in these operations between restoration, reuse and museography. The importance of assigning a function to historical buildings ensures their conservation and re-entry into contemporary reality; an enhancement that must be compatible, that is giving priority to the material quality of the asset, its physical, typological and formal characteristics. The current cultural reuse is therefore placed in this scenario, which assigns the museum a fundamental role in the promotion of sustainable development, as a means of safeguarding the tangible and intangible cultural heritage. And so this research starts from some necessary premises: analyze how the theme of museum reuse has nourished over time the theoretical elaborations of the three terms, with the will to outline the current scenarios of the theme. In the first part we will see therefore, in parallel, how the awareness of the importance that a building hosts a specific function grows and of the compatibility of the actions realized in this regard with the historical factory. In the second part we enter the contemporaneity. The convergence of the conservation project and the design of new architecture within the theoretical development of the restoration, as well as the necessity of an active protection of the cultural heritage that sees in the museum institution a territorial garrison, is compared with the deep changes that have invested the museum institution in recent years. And so we choose to start from these changes to identify three thematic areas - related to the museum's spatiality, to new urban functions and identity and to ways of creating an internal narration - to be reported in the study of the experiences of current museum reuse, some of the most important European achievements of the last twenty years. The arguments will be supported, then, by the study of two significant case studies, the Neues Museum in Berlin and the Mountain Museum in the Fort of Bard, chosen for the critical, conservative and creative component of their restoration project and for the recognized effectiveness of their museum programme. The overall picture that is drawn, starting from the changes in the issues identified, will ultimately define the design trends in progress in this increasingly rising phenomenon and outline the lines of development.

A fábrica de moagem do Caramujo é um importante valor patrimonial da memória colectiva para a história da Cova da Piedade, podendo o seu estudo científico constituir um fundamento para o seu reaproveitamento funcional inserido na vida plena de uma comunidade, a partir de pontos de vista opostos ou até complementares dos objectivos do poder local. O pioneirismo da sua arquitectura em betão armado, ligada ao surto da indústria moderna no final do século XIX, e o seu legado histórico configuram este edifício como um exemplo paradigmático da importância da salvaguarda e reutilização do património industrial, a partir da implantação de um possível museu, recorrendo nesse percurso aos suportes físicos e testemunhos sociais ligados ao trabalho industrial.
Caramujo’s grinding factory is an important heritage of the collective memory for Cova da Piedade’s history; its scientific study, based on both opposing and complementary viewpoints on local policies’ objectives, may be the grounds for its functional reuse integrated in the community’s life. The pioneering of its reinforced concrete architecture, connected to the outset of modern industry at the end of the 19th century, and its historical legacy make this building a paradigm of the importance of the safekeeping and reuse of the industrial heritage, through the possible creation of a museum, resorting to both the physical artifacts and the social evidence linked to the industrial labour.

In accordance with the definition of the national Cultural Heritage Preservation Act, cultural assets have the values of history, culture, art and science. The value of the cultural assets is oftentimes not only classified into one kind but is sometimes considered numerous values. If the value of the single cultural asset is thought to be more in amount, the importance of the preservation of the cultural asset is relatively high as well. To be specific, the appropriate preservation is even able to rehabilitate the living styles and cultural differences then. In the preservation of the cultural assets, the industrial heritage plays a particular role. These characteristics enable the industrial heritage in the domain of the cultural asset to be at an extreme high value of preservation. What’s more, the adaptive reuse of the industrial heritage should also be discussed again. The thesis anticipates through the research of the adaptive reuse of the exhibition process in the Taipei Camphor Factory to rethink the significance of the value of the industrial heritage and the reuse, discussing the relationship of the space with the exhibition content and the possible problems. Furthermore, the thesis attempts to probe into the industrial heritage reused into a museum via the learned theories from the museum. In regard with the related issues of cultural exhibition and representation, the thesis aims to use the mentioned theories to be the future research accordance for the reuse of the industrial heritage and hopes this thinking logic can be able to provide related future plans and a new pathway to the research. The structure of the thesis is mainly categorized into three categories, the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. The introduction aims to define the definition of the related nouns with the thesis and the literature review. The body is discussed into three chapters. The second chapter mainly states the related theories and the retrospection with the compilation from the museum. The third chapter is discussed into two parts. In the beginning, the thesis discusses the industrial structure and the cultural history of the camphor and the opium and connects the development of the Taipei Camphor Factory to the research of the relocation of the factory. The fourth chapter emphasizes on the restoration of the Taipei Camphor Factory and the process of the reuse as the museum for exhibition afterwards. At last, the thesis focuses on the cultural exhibition in the museum and the different aspects of the representation, as well as, the restoration of the Taipei Camphor Factory, which is viewed as the reusing process for the museum and brings up the conclusion and the suggestions in the long run.

Over the recent years, the Cultural Heritage Preservation Law of Taiwan has constantly evolved to reflect the reconsideration and emphasis of the cultural heritage, such as venerable monuments and historical buildings. The memories of the space in the monument and historical buildings could be reinterpreted through adaptive reuse to focus on the function of deserted spaces and show the symbol of the historic space and culture. Adaptive Reuse of Cultural Heritage as museums, is originally the non-museum use function, pours into old buildings which its use function quasi-museum institutions, has the museum phenomenon, and again carries on the repair to the monument and historic buildings' space with to reuse. Hence, this research eliminates standard gauge museum, but aims at the monument and historic buildings reuse as the museums, produces the spatial variation carries on the discussion, pondered the first cultural Heritage takes the museum the development evolution, as well as the understanding culture Heritage reusing as the museum needs the condition, then adaptive reuse because of the cultural Heritage takes appraisal of main point museums use, pondered after overall cultural Heritage and de-museumification, should have the space echoes or the corresponding relationships mutually. The Adaptive Reuse of Cultural Heritage as museums, recognizes the importance of Cultural Heritage. Cultural Heritage, in relation to the functions of museums, needs to take into account the visitor’s experiential journey of historic buildings, also to preserve the historical sites, the historical building original intention. The value of Adaptive Reuse of Cultural Heritage in museums is influenced by the reallocation plan. Expected Cultural Heritage as museums can also consider mutual recognition which of the region collective memory the modern museology pays great attention, thus securing a positive outlook for the allocation and usage of Cultural Heritage spaces in future.

Fashion is known as contributive to the image of a place for its capability to reflect its culture. Many cities around the world are known for being capitals of culture, and the influence of fashion enables these cities to be labeled as fashion capitals. Historically referential or reflected in contemporary subculture, the prominence of fashion in cultural capitals are observed mainly from material objects (e.g. clothing) that depict styles or trends. Fashion as a cultural attraction brought in opportunities for design individuals or enthusiasts to establish themselves in cities where the term fashion is used for its own brand as a place. These opportunities then give birth to leisure activities such as shopping and visiting museum exhibitions, which eventually transform the place into a tourist destination. These given circumstances demonstrate how people belonging to the outside world of this type of capital are enticed to visit in order to appreciate the intangible (culture) and tangible (product) qualities raised by fashion. The dissemination of fashion in the examples given above is commonly done by the holding of two types of events that portray fashion objects into two types: product and artifact. Fashion shows are held to flaunt a designer’s new collection of clothing for an upcoming season, which is later on displayed and sold in stores, while fashion exhibitions transform items such as clothing into pieces that fit into the museum context. A number of these places are already branded as cultural capitals of fashion, which may reinforce their position in the tourism context. However, other cities that conduct fashion shows and exhibitions in the venues previously given are emerging or may still emerge as potential tourist attractions through the impact of the phenomenon that fashion-related events held in built heritage may have. Although fashion-related events may not be a factor of interest for potential tourists to visit the places where the venues are located as well as visit the venues, having interest in fashion and fashion shows can encourage management or operators of built heritage, museums, or reused spaces to reconsider this interest in making use of their venues more creatively and productively. Even though the results from pre- and post-viewing of images taken from fashion shows and venues yielded no significant finding on such events’ influence on potential tourist interest to travel, this does not mean that structures with built heritage, museums, or reused spaces cease the opportunity to be utilized for the promotion of fashion in industry and cultural context. Although the main attention is on fashion pieces during the show or exhibition, the amalgamation of elements makeup for the overall effect that can impact viewers’ understanding and recognition of the intrinsic values of structure and space. Theorizing the process of fashion-related events in inducing potential tourists’ interest to travel to a specific location emphasizes the importance of visual information that the tourists obtain, which is preceded by any prior amount of knowledge they may have of the venue and their values that can help them recognize them as well their interest on these venues, the tourist’s interest on culture and fashion. The influential process for potential visitor’s interest to visit the venues of fashion-related events, by which learning about these events being held in the said venues comes during the time the viewers see the images of the fashion-related events. Potential visitors may have prior awareness of fashion-related events being held in built heritage, museums, and reused spaces by having seen them before. However, the fashion shows or exhibitions and the venues they have not been previously aware of are made known to them through these images. The result may affect their level of interest to visit the venues and know more about their values. Throughout the process illustrates the potential tourist’s increased learning, whereby images become the initiators.
