Résumé :
Polycystine radiolaria that produce siliceous tests are known to range from Cambrian to Holocene. They have proven to be enormously useful in providing age control for siliceous marine sequences of Middle Devonian and younger ages, particularly for cherts and shales that are commonly devoid of other biostratigraphically useful fossils. The utility of radiolarian biostratigraphy became widely recognized in the 1970s and 1980s when it was applied in dating deformed marine siliceous sequences in orogenic belts around the world, most notably in Cordilleran North America and other areas along the Pacific rim (e.g., Jones and Murchey, 1986; Aitchison and Murchey, 1992; Ichikawa et al., 1990).

This paper shares ongoing research explorations into visualising and representing architecture through the limited real-estate spaces of computer screens. It proposes greater access, ‘interactivity’ and clarity in digital representations for the study, analysis and/or digital record of existing architecture by drawing on concepts and strategies – within and outside the discipline – to arrive at hybrid visualisation techniques. To illustrate some of these techniques, the paper outlines several issues in the production of hybrid media representations of the Arthur and Yvonne Boyd Education Centre. This award-winning building was designed by the 2002 Pritzker Prize-winner, Glenn Murcutt in association with Wendy Lewin and Reg Lark. It is recognised as a landmark in Australian architecture and a worthy subject of our representation experiments.

Résumé :
This paper presents a hybrid approach that selectively merges aspects of both the theories of Shape Grammar and Space Syntax to investigate spatial design patterns. The paper describes the development of a generic Justified Plan Graph (g-JPG) grammar. This grammatically nuanced, syntactically derived approach is then demonstrated through a more specific JPG (s-JPG) grammar to identify spatial design patterns in the rural domestic architecture of Glenn Murcutt. The results are then discussed in terms of Murcutt's architecture from four perspectives: grammatical transformation of syntax, epistemological questions, similarity or disparity and finally in terms of JPG variations. The findings of this paper suggest that the combined analytic approach facilitates the exploration of both the grammatical and syntactical genotypes of sets of architectural designs.

Résumé :
Recently, Chang et. al. (1992) and Carlsson, Rutten and Shchukina (1992) (CRS) demonstrated the non-LTE formation mechanism behind the 12 μm Mg I emission lines (6g–7h, 6h–7i) observed in the solar spectrum (Murcray et. al., 1981). CRS stress the generality of this mechanism showing that it is a natural consequence of the recombination flow from the large Mg II reservoir through the Rydberg levels of Mg I. We have noted the close parallel between Mg I in the solar atmosphere and Mg II in the atmospheres of B stars (where Mg III plays the role of the reservoir) and investigated the operation of this mechanism in high-ℓ infrared transitions of Mg II. We have employed a 58 level Mg II atom including all energy levels through n = 25 and a total of 491 linearized radiative transitions. The coupled equations of radiative transfer and statistical equilibrium were solved with the MULTI code in its local operator form (Carlsson, 1992).

Résumé :
Includes 2 previously published journal articles by the author: Women in architecture: a personal reflection ; and, "Half the sky, but no room of her own", as appendices. Includes bibliographical references (p. 233-251) An examination of some texts influential in the discourse of Australian architecture in the twentieth century. Explores from a feminist standpoint the gendered nature of discourse in contemporary Western architecture from an Australian perspective. The starting point for the thesis was an examination of Australian architectual discourse in search of some explanation for the continuing low numbers of women practitioners in Australia. Hypothesizes that contemporary Western architecture is imbued with a pervasive and dominant masculinity and that this is deeply imbedded in its discursive constructions: the body housed by architecture is assume to be male, the mind which produces architecture is assumed to be masculine. Given the cultural location of Australian architecture as a marginal participant in the wider arena of contemporary Western / international discourses, focuses on writing about two iconic figues in Western architecture; Le Corbusier, of international reknown; and, Glenn Murcutt, of predominantly local significance.

Résumé :
The utilization of heavy metals in several agricultural and industrial processes is expanding dramatically, posing a severe hazard to human and ecosystem health from heavy metal contamination from natural and anthropogenic sources. A significant exposure source that results in the buildup of hazardous heavy metals in people, plants, and livestock is contaminated water. Mercury, lead, copper, cadmium, chromium, and copper are among the key metals of public health concern. Mercury is a heavy element that pollutes marine environments due to both natural and human-caused activities that release waste products into the sea. Mercury waste can be produced by the cosmetic sector, electronics, paint industry, dental industry, gold extraction sector, also many more. Humans are exposed to mercury not just through environmental pollution but also through the use of cosmetic chemicals, consumption of foods and beverages that contain mercury, or by direct contact with mercury-containing items. Due to exposure of mercury, bacteria strive to protect themselves by withdrawing the metal so that they can survive in conditions where mercury is present. The genes of bacteria that attempt to protect themselves from environmental mercury exposure alter, making them mercury-resistant bacteria. In this study, the bacteria was allowed to grow in the media containing mercury and was observed that with the subsequent days, it was thriving. The growth curve was made in the presence of mercury using UV spectrophotometry. It was also observed that at minute concentrations, mercury seems to be an inducer for the bacteria E.coli. It was analyzed by HPLC, where the bacteria was found to produce high amounts of citric acid at lower concentrations so as to thrive in the environment containing mercury. Total enzyme activity was analyzed by an FDA assay.

Kwee, Verdy. « Presenting architecture on a digital flatland : a case study on Murcutt, Lewin and Lark’s The Arthur and Yvonne Boyd Education Centre ». 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/57896.

Résumé :
This thesis primarily deals with the presentation of architectural information in order to allow a wider audience to gain a better understanding of an existing architectural work. It proposes to augment the role of visual media in explaining architectural subjects – beyond the commonly accepted levels in the current print publications or on the internet. The effectiveness of traditional publications of notable buildings in terms of their level of presentation and degree of information rigour are commonly presumed but unproven. In this era, their unchallenged role as facilitators for clear and in-depth learning results in mainly digital replications of conventional presentation methods. Little has been explored in the area of expanding digital visualisation capabilities to leverage information clarity. This thesis enquires into architectural precedent presentation possibilities specifically within the limitations of computer screens. The approach involves a worldwide online survey to investigate public perception of current media effectiveness within commonly available publications. The research also explores several digital visualisation presentation techniques. Together with the collected data about the building, this exploration and the results of the survey are considered in the production of a digital presentation prototype of The Arthur and Yvonne Boyd Education Centre by Australian architects Glenn Murcutt, Wendy Lewin and Reg Lark. While the thesis findings highlight critical areas overlooked by current publications, the illustrative prototype serves as a basis to propose opportunities that could be explored. There are three obvious outcomes derived from this research project: • The scope and depth of information about the Arthur and Yvonne Boyd Education Centre extends beyond what any one secondary source currently provides. Materials relevant to many aspects of the building are researched from primary sources. • There are presently numerous methods to visualise architectural information. However, in order to use them as more robust learning instruments, the thesis highlights several factors for their design enhancement. It describes some digital visualisation possibilities for adoption in future digital architectural publications. • The thesis outlines the stages undertaken and some considerations in their implementations. The design of the digital prototype presentation of the Arthur and Yvonne Boyd Education Centre suggests not only a direction for similar future works, but also identifies the technological facilitation gaps that we still need to address.

Résumé :
This chapter provides a background to the common “linguistic” analogies in architectural thinking, which are concerned with the “grammar” of form and the “syntax” of space. The chapter then links these linguistic properties to the classical Vitruvian architectural values of firmness, commodity, and delight. Thereafter, the chapter introduces the two most well-known computational design approaches, Shape Grammar and Space Syntax, and briefly outlines the general applications of each. In addition, throughout this book, new grammatical and syntactical approaches are typically demonstrated using the domestic architecture of Andrea Palladio, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Glenn Murcutt. Thus, this chapter also introduces these three architects and their architectural languages.

Résumé :
The final chapter of the book revisits the emerging Shape Grammar research presented in Chapter 2 and the quantitative analysis and guided generation using a Palladian Grammar in Chapter 3. It then revisits the limitations of Space Syntax approaches and of the justified planning graph (JPG) method and its measures, described in Chapters 4 and 5. Finally, this chapter discusses the new combined grammatical and syntactical method presented in Chapters 6, 7, and 8. This concluding chapter emphasises the book's contribution to advances in Shape Grammar and Space Syntax research for architectural design analysis and generation. In addition to these theoretical contributions, the primary computational approaches in the book, which have been demonstrated using the domestic designs of Palladio, Wright, and Murcutt, are also valuable for architectural education and practice.

Résumé :
Since their discovery over a decade ago (Murcray et al., 1981; Brault and Noyes, 1983), the neutral Magnesium emission lines at 12 microns wavelength have proven to be valuable probes of the Sun's magnetic field. These infrared lines are the most Zeeman-sensitive lines observed in the solar spectrum. These lines arise in the upper photosphere, at around 400 km above the continuum. Our group at Goddard Space Flight Center has used the McMath-Pierce telescope and Fourier transform spectrometer, in combination with two cryogenic infrared postdispersers, developed at Goddard Space Flight Center and Kitt Peak National Observatory, to observe the 12.32-micron line. This program has produced an extensive study of the magnitude and structure of magnetic fields in sunspots and other active regions, as well as in quiet regions.
