Résumé :
Both active and passive underwater acoustic systems frequently use purpose built hardware that is designed for a particular application. Transducers, electronics, and data acquisition systems for field experiments, therefore, are often expensive, tailored to limited frequency bands, or packaged for integration with a specific platform. Reliance on custom hardware, however, can make initial experimental investigations of new sensing paradigms cost prohibitive. The expense also creates an entry barrier to experimental work for students and researchers outside the underwater acoustics community. Audio hardware, however, is widely available, easily integrated using commercial data acquisition tools, and is often of relatively low cost. This presentation will describe two efforts to use audio hardware for inexpensive experimental investigations of underwater acoustics topics. The first, AirSAS, uses audio transducers and electronics to investigate synthetic aperture sonar problems in air that are analogous to those underwater. The second, the Citizen Scientist Hydrophone, integrates underwater transducers with consumer audio electronics to make an inexpensive, multipurpose passive sensing device. Challenges and limitations of using commercial audio hardware for underwater acoustics, especially as they relate to accuracy and data quality, will be discussed.

Résumé :
Diagnostic ultrasound or sonography is an image that can provide valuable information for diagnosing and treating a variety of diseases and conditions. The aim of this research study is to examine the performance and accuracy of the ultrasonic imaging system for the guarantee of diagnosis quality assurance, and to adjust the penetration settings to minimize the time of repeat scans and maintenance duration during research experiments. Measurements in this experiment included the resolution (axial and lateral) and focal zones. Moreover, the evaluation was done by completing all the measurements at different depths on a multipurpose phantom model 539. The phantom was bought from the market and was not fabricated by the author. The measurements were achieved by applying two different transducers: curved and linear (flat). The ultrasound images were obtained and tested by using calipers (electronic), and the estimations and observations were read by using all the taken measurements and images. As a result, because the phantom depths were different, the penetration settings were different too, indicating that the depth impacted the penetrations of the created ultrasound image. Moreover, after the comparison of the recorded measurements and results, it was found that all measurements were within the accepted (standard) value and that the true value was specified by the production of the phantom.

Résumé :
We developed a new mobile ultrasound device for long-term and automated bladder monitoring without user interaction consisting of 32 transmit and receive electronics as well as a 32-element phased array 3 MHz transducer. The device architecture is based on data digitization and rapid transfer to a consumer electronics device (e.g., a tablet) for signal reconstruction (e.g., by means of plane wave compounding algorithms) and further image processing. All reconstruction algorithms are implemented in the GPU, allowing real-time reconstruction and imaging. The system and the beamforming algorithms were evaluated with respect to the imaging performance on standard sonographical phantoms (CIRS multipurpose ultrasound phantom) by analyzing the resolution, the SNR and the CNR. Furthermore, ML-based segmentation algorithms were developed and assessed with respect to their ability to reliably segment human bladders with different filling levels. A corresponding CNN was trained with 253 B-mode data sets and 20 B-mode images were evaluated. The quantitative and qualitative results of the bladder segmentation are presented and compared to the ground truth obtained by manual segmentation.

Résumé :
The demand for on-site nanodevices is constantly increasing. The technology development for the design of such devices is highly regarded. In this work, we report the design of a disposable platform that is structured with cauliflower-shaped gold nanoparticles (cfAuNPs) and we show its applications in immunosensing and enzyme-based detection. The electrochemical reduction of Au(III) allows for the electrodeposition of highly dispersed cauliflower-shaped gold nanoparticles on the surface of screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs). The nanostructures were functionalized using ferrocenylmethyl lipoic acid ester which allowed for the tethering of the ferrocene group to gold, which serves as an electrochemical transducer/mediator. The bioconjugation of the surface with anti-human IgG antibody (α-hIgG) or horseradish peroxidase (HRP) enzyme yields biosensors, which have been applied for the selective electrochemical detection of human IgG (hIgG) or H2O2 as model analytes, respectively. Parameters such as the number of sweeps, amount of charge generated from the oxidation of the electrodeposited gold, time of incubation and concentration of the ferrocene derivatives have been studied using cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Selectivity and specificity tests have been also performed in the presence of potentially interfering substances to either hIgG or H2O2. Results showed that the devised immunosensor is endowed with good selectivity and specificity in the presence of several folds of competitive analytes. The enzyme-based platform showed a good catalytic activity towards H2O2 oxidation which predestined it to potential applications pertaining to enzymatic kinetics studies. The levels of hIgG in human serum and H2O2 in honey were successfully determined and served as assessment tools of the applicability of the platforms for real samples analysis.

Résumé :
Introduction. Results of examination of a pilot model of hydrofoil passenger craft topside made of polymer composite materials for delamination-type defects are presented. Defects area is measured and compared with the rated values. Method. To ensure flaw detection, use was made of a two-level test arrangement using an acoustic impedance method, free oscillations acoustic method, and DAMI-C composite materials multipurpose inspection unit. The exact location of the defect was determined by point-to-point testing. Threshold testing using a sonic scanner produces full image of the object defective area to allow subsequent measurement of the defect areas and comparing them with those of the acceptability requirements. Results. The amount of inspection is 100% of the topside both on the outside and inside, scanning depth - up to the light medium layer. To select optimum operation mode of the inspection unit, use was made of sample pieces with dummy defects. Conclusions. It was confirmed that using the selected reinforcing and bonding materials was appropriate to create composite material for the hydrofoil passenger craft topside. It was also confirmed that the designed structural layout of the product and its manufacturing technology were correct. No technological defects in the places of possible generation of delamination-type defects during operation have been revealed. The examination also confirmed high efficiency of the DAMI-C inspection unit equipped with RS-1 transmit-receive transducer and a sonic scanner to carry out detection of flaws in composite body shell structures including those made in the form of a sandwich, to ensure their testing for technological internal defects of the delamination (starved spot) type.

Résumé :
Future robotic systems will be pervasive technologies operating autonomously in unknown spaces that are shared with humans. Such complex interactions make it compulsory for them to be lightweight, soft, and efficient in a way to guarantee safety, robustness and long-term operation. This set of qualities can be achieved using soft multipurpose systems that combine, integrate and commute between conventional electromechanical and fluidic drives, as well as harvest energy during inactive actuation phases for increased energy efficiency. Recent research work has shown that dielectric fluids with specific properties, can be combined with stretchable or flexible shell structures made of polymeric dielectric/electrode composite films, to implement a novel type of soft electrically-driven fluidic transducers with self-healing and self-sensing capabilities that take the name of Liquid-based Electro-Active Polymer transducers (LEAPs). These devices are similar to dielectric elastomer transducers in regards to their electrostatic working principle, but they can potentially produce larger displacements due to their lower mechanical stiffness. In this thesis a novel electrostatic transducer is presented; the transducer is made of thin polymer films and liquid dielectrics, combined with rigid stiffening elements to form a circular electrostatic bellow muscle (EBM) unit capable of out-of-plane contraction. These units are easy to manufacture and can be arranged in arrays and stacks that can be employed as contractile artificial muscles, pumps for fluid-driven soft robots, or as energy harvesters. As artificial muscles, EBMs of 20 - 40 millimeters in diameter can exert forces of up to 6 newtons, lift loads over a hundred times their own weight, and reach contractions of over 40 per cent with strain rates over 1200 per cents per second, with a bandwidth over 10 Hz. As pump drivers, EBMs produce flow rates of up 0.63 liters per minute and maximum pressure head of 6 kilopascals, whereas as generators, they reach a conversion efficiency close to 20 per cent. The compact shape, low cost, simple assembling procedure, high reliability and large contractions make the EBM a promising technology for high-performance robotic systems.
