Résumé :
Periodic nanoparticle arrays have attracted considerable interest recently since the lattice effect can lead to spectrally narrow resonances and tune the resonance position in a broad range. Multipole decomposition is widely used to analyze the role of the multipoles in the resonance excitations, radiation, and scattering of electromagnetic waves. However, previous studies have not addressed the validity and accuracy of the multipole decomposition around the lattice resonance. The applicability of the exact multipole decomposition based on spherical harmonics expansion has not been demonstrated around the lattice resonance with the strong multipole coupling. This work studies the two-dimensional periodic arrays of both plasmonic and dielectric nanospheres and compares the multipole decomposition results with the analytic ones around their lattice resonances. We study both the effective polarizabilities of multipoles and the scattering spectra of the structures. The analytical results are calculated from the coupled dipole–quadrupole model. This study demonstrates that the exact multipole decomposition agrees well with the numerical simulation around lattice resonances. Only a small number of multipoles are required to represent the results accurately.

Résumé :
Doubly differential continuum cross sections from the 90Zr(p, n)90Nb reaction have been analyzed via a multipoledecomposition technique. No quasi-free charge-exchange background has been subtracted, following the assumption that the observed cross sections are primarily due to one-step charge-exchange leading to 1p–1h states of all multipolarities to all excitations. The theoretical shapes of the differential cross sections for each Jπ multipole have been taken from random-phase approximation (RPA)–distorted-wave impulse approximation (DWIA) calculations. The experimental dσ/dΩ, for each 1 MeV excitation-energy bin have been decomposed into different multipole components by a least squares fit. This RPA-based analysis should determine the Jπ = 1+ cross sections with different, and also fewer, assumptions than usual for describing the underlying background. It can be of general importance in determining the extent of possible quenching of Gamow–Teller (GT) strength. The present decomposition accounts for all the theoretically predicted GT strength. The purpose of the present report is to illustrate an analysis based on RPA–DWIA shapes rather than to present final-decomposition results.

Résumé :
Noise generated by nearly axisymmetric vortex pairing in an excited low Mach number jet was studied experimentally as a prototypical jet noise source using a three-dimensional microphone array. The measured time-dependent sound field was decomposed into its multipole components using general linear regression techniques. Although the vortex interactions were very nearly axisymmetric and thus a nearly axisymmetric lateral quadrupole sound field was expected, the sound field was found to have large departures from axisymmetry. This acoustic sensitivity to symmetry breaking in the vorticity field was also shown in calculations using numerical vortex models and vortex sound theory. The directivity of the far-field sound gets smeared out in the time averaged data due to the tilting of the quadrupoles; this emphasizes the need for studying the jet sound pressure field in four dimensions (x, t) to better understand the mechanisms of noise generation.

Résumé :
ABSTRACT We study an efficient way to enhance the measurability of the galaxy density and/or velocity power spectrum in redshift space. It is based on the angular decomposition with the tripolar spherical harmonic (TripoSH) basis and applicable even to galaxy distributions in wide-angle galaxy surveys. While non-trivial multipole-mode mixings are inevitable in the covariance of the Legendre decomposition coefficient commonly used in the small-angle power spectrum analysis, our analytical computation of the covariance of the TripoSH decomposition coefficient shows that such mixings are absent by virtue of high separability of the TripoSH basis, yielding the minimum variance. Via the simple signal-to-noise ratio assessment, we confirm that the detectability improvement by the TripoSH decomposition approach becomes more significant at higher multipole modes, and the hexadecapole of the density power spectrum has two orders of magnitude improvement. The TripoSH decomposition approach is expected to be applied to not only currently available survey data but also forthcoming wide-angle data, and to bring about something new or much more accurate cosmological information.

Résumé :
The linearized field equations of general relativity in harmonic coordinates are given by an inhomogeneous wave equation. In the region exterior to the matter field, the retarded solution of this wave equation can be expanded in terms of 10 Cartesian symmetric and tracefree (STF) multipoles in post-Minkowskian approximation. For such a multipole decomposition only three and rather weak assumptions are required: (1) No-incoming-radiation condition. (2) The matter source is spatially compact. (3) A spherical expansion for the metric outside the matter source is possible. During the last decades, the STF multipole expansion has been established as a powerful tool in several fields of gravitational physics: celestial mechanics, theory of gravitational waves and in the theory of light propagation and astrometry. But despite its formidable importance, an explicit proof of the fundamental theorem of STF multipole expansion has not been presented so far, while only some parts of it are distributed into several publications. In a technical but more didactical form, an explicit and detailed mathematical proof of each individual step of this important theorem of STF multipole expansion is represented.

Résumé :
Scattering of electromagnetic waves by an arbitrary nanoscale object can be characterized by a multipole decomposition of the electromagnetic field that allows one to describe the scattering intensity and radiation pattern through interferences of dominating multipole modes excited. In modern nanophotonics, both generation and interference of multipole modes start to play an indispensable role, and they enable nanoscale manipulation of light with many related applications. Here, we review the multipolar interference effects in metallic, metal–dielectric and dielectric nanostructures, and suggest a comprehensive view on many phenomena involving the interferences of electric, magnetic and toroidal multipoles, which drive a number of recently discussed effects in nanophotonics such as unidirectional scattering, effective optical antiferromagnetism, generalized Kerker scattering with controlled angular patterns, generalized Brewster angle, and non-radiating optical anapoles. We further discuss other types of possible multipolar interference effects not yet exploited in the literature and envisage the prospect of achieving more flexible and advanced nanoscale control of light relying on the concepts of multipolar interference through full phase and amplitude engineering. This article is part of the themed issue ‘New horizons for nanophotonics’.

Résumé :
In this Letter, a three-dimensional beamforming method is proposed for a miniaturized aperture acoustic vector sensor (AVS) array. This method extracts the multipole modes using the AVS array, and then synthesizes the desired beam pattern according to the relation between multipole modes and spherical harmonics. Compared to the spherical harmonics decomposition of the sound field method, the proposed method achieves comparable array gain with higher white noise gain when the distance of adjacent elements d and the wavelength λ satisfy [Formula: see text]. Experimental results also demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed three-dimensional beamforming method at very low frequency.

Résumé :
This work details a technique tailored to the analysis of complex radome structures based on the non-overlapping separation of two different domains: antenna and radome. Both domains are analyzed isolated using the method of moments with the multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MoM-MLFMA) for the antenna domain and a modified characteristic basis function method with the multilevel fast multipole algorithm approach for the radome domain. An iterative procedure is then applied to compute the effect of each domain over the complementary domain. This approach usually converges into a few iterations, yielding very good results and significant efficiency improvements with respect to other efficient approaches such as a full-wave MoM-MLFMA analysis of the full problem. A realistic test case is included, considering a radome with an embedded frequency selective structure on one of its interfaces. The results show a very good agreement considering only three iterations between domains, requiring only one-third of the CPU-time needed by the conventional approach.

Résumé :
All-dielectric optical antenna with multiple Mie modes and lower inherent ohmic loss can achieve high efficiency of light manipulation. However, the silicon-based optical antenna is not reconfigurable for specific scenarios. The refractive index of optical phase-change materials can be reconfigured under stimulus, and this singular behavior makes it a good candidate for making reconfigurable passive optical devices. Here, the optical radiation characteristics of the V-shaped phase-change antenna are investigated theoretically. The results show that with increasing crystallinity, the maximum radiation direction of the V-shaped phase-change antenna can be continuously deflected by 90°. The exact multipole decomposition analysis reveals that the modulus and interference phase difference of the main multipole moments change with the crystallinity, resulting in a continuous deflection of the maximum radiation direction. Thus, the power ratio in the two vertical radiation directions can be monotonically reversed from −12 to 7 dB between 20% and 80% crystallinity. The V-shaped phase-change antenna exhibits the potential to act as the basic structural unit to construct a reconfigurable passive spatial angular power splitter or wavelength multiplexer. The mechanism analysis of radiation directivity involving the modulus and interference phase difference of the multipole moments will provide a reference for the design and optimization of the phase-change antenna.

Résumé :
Abstract The intriguing properties of the toroidal mode (TM) resonance can potentially promote a low-loss light–matter interaction. This study proposes an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance with a high quality factor, which can reach 7798, and low mode volume can reach 0.009 μm3, high contrast ratio can reach nearly 100%, in the near-infrared region, which is generated by the magnetic TM in a reverse-symmetric coupling spiral metasurface. A two-oscillator model can only explain the influence of near-field coupling at the EIT point for weak coupling. Moreover, a multipole decomposition method shows that the excitation mechanism of EIT resonances originates from the destructive interference between the subradiant modes (magnetic toroidal dipole-electric quadrupole) and magnetic dipole resonance. Consequently, a new general extinction spectrum interference model is applied to fit all coupling conditions for both weak and strong coupling results that perfectly correspond to the multipole decomposition method. The results of this study could be useful in the analysis and understanding of the electromagnetic coupling characteristics of nanoparticles and provide a design approach for novel metasurfaces for low-loss optical applications.

Résumé :
This paper proposes the first linear scaling implementation for the domain decomposition approach of the polarizable continuum model (ddPCM) for the computation of the solvation energy and forces. The ddPCM-equation consists of a (non-local) integral equation on the van der Waals or solvent accessible surface of the solute’s cavity resulting in a dense solution matrix, and, in turn, one matrix–vector multiplication has a quadratic arithmetic complexity with respect to the number of atoms of the solute molecule. The use of spherical harmonics as basis functions makes it natural to employ the fast multipole method (FMM) in order to provide an asymptotically linear scaling method. In this paper, we employ the FMM in a non-uniform manner with a clusterization based on a recursive inertial bisection. We present some numerical tests illustrating the accuracy and scaling of our implementation.

Résumé :
The hybrid solvers based on integral equation domain decomposition method (HS-DDM) are developed for modeling of electromagnetic radiation. Based on the philosophy of “divide and conquer,” the IE-DDM divides the original multiscale problem into many closed nonoverlapping subdomains. For adjacent subdomains, the Robin transmission conditions ensure the continuity of currents, so the meshes of different subdomains can be allowed to be nonconformal. It also allows different fast solvers to be used in different subdomains based on the property of different subdomains to reduce the time and memory consumption. Here, the multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) and hierarchical (H-) matrices method are combined in the framework of IE-DDM to enhance the capability of IE-DDM and realize efficient solution of multiscale electromagnetic radiating problems. The MLFMA is used to capture propagating wave physics in large, smooth regions, while H-matrices are used to capture evanescent wave physics in small regions which are discretized with dense meshes. Numerical results demonstrate the validity of the HS-DDM.

Résumé :
High refractive index dielectric nanostructures represent a new frontier in nanophotonics, and the unique semiconductor characteristics of dielectric systems make it possible to enhance electric fields by exploiting this fundamental physical phenomenon. In this work, the scattered radiation spectral features and field-enhanced interactions of gallium phosphide disks with forked slits at anapole modes are investigated systematically by numerical and multipole decomposition analyses. Additional enhancement of the electric field is achieved by opening the forked slits to create high-intensity hot spots inside the disk, and nearby molecules can access these hot spots directly. The results reveal a novel approach for near-field engineering such as electric field localization, nonlinear optics, and optical detection.

Résumé :
Coulomb excitation of the exotic neutron-rich nucleus 26 Ne on a 208 Pb target was measured at 58 A.MeV in order to search for low-lying E1 strength above the neutron emission threshold. The radioactive beam was produced by fragmentation of a 95 A.MeV Ar beam delivered by the RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility. The set-up included a NaI ( Tl ) gamma-ray array, a charged fragment hodoscope and a neutron wall. Using the invariant mass method in the 25 Ne +n channel, we observe by multipole decomposition a sizable amount of E1 strength between 6 and 10 MeV excitation energy. For the first time, the decay pattern of low-lying strength in a neutron-rich nucleus is measured.

Résumé :
A comprehensive analysis of the structure of the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) of neutrinoless double beta-minus (0νβ-β-) decays to the0+ground and first excited states is performed in terms of the contributing multipole states in the intermediate nuclei of0νβ-β-transitions. We concentrate on the transitions mediated by the light (l-NMEs) Majorana neutrinos. As nuclear model we use the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) with a realistic two-nucleon interaction based on the Bonn one-boson-exchangeGmatrix. In the computations we include the appropriate short-range correlations, nucleon form factors, and higher-order nucleonic weak currents and restore the isospin symmetry by the isoscalar-isovector decomposition of the particle-particle proton-neutron interaction parametergpp.

Résumé :
The method of fractional occupation probabilities of the orbits is adopted in order to obtain nuclear form factors to be used for reliable cross sections calculations of the dominant coherent neutrino-nucleus reaction channel. To this purpose, the multipole decomposition method of Donnelly-Walecka is employed. The response of the 48Ti nucleus in solar and Supernova neutrino detection is investigated through our realistic nuclear structure cross sections calculations, based on the solution of the BCS equations. The present results indicate that the momentum dependence of the nuclear form factors cannot be neglected from the cross section, especially in the energy region of Supernova neutrinos (or for neutrinos having higher energies), because differences of even orders of magnitude may occur.

Résumé :
Excellent characteristics and promising application prospects promote the rapid development of metamaterials. We have numerically proposed and demonstrated a novel subwavelength broadband metamaterial perfect absorber (BMPA) based on diamond dielectric arrays. The proposed absorber is composed of an ultra-thin two-layer structure covering the dielectric periodic array on a metal substrate. The materials of dielectric silicon (Si) and gold (Au) substrate are discussed in detail. In addition, different dielectric and refractory materials are also applied to achieve broadband absorption, which will make the proposed absorber greatly broaden the application field. A perfect absorption window (i.e., absorption rate exceeding 90%) can be obtained from near-ultraviolet to the visible range. The average absorption rate of 93.3% is achieved in the visible range. The results of multipole decomposition show that broadband absorption is mainly caused by electromagnetic dipole resonance and lattice resonance in a periodic array of Si. The proposed absorber can be extended freely by adjusting the structural parameters. The polarization-independent and incident angle insensitivity are proved. The proposed absorber may well be used in light energy acquisition, as well as for the scalability of optoelectronic and sensing devices.

Résumé :
In this contribution the dissociative electron attachment to metabolites found in aerobic organisms, namely oxaloacetic and citric acids, was studied both experimentally by means of a crossed-beam setup and theoretically through density functional theory calculations. Prominent negative ion resonances from both compounds are observed peaking below 0.5 eV resulting in intense formation of fragment anions associated with a decomposition of the carboxyl groups. In addition, resonances at higher energies (3–9 eV) are observed exclusively from the decomposition of the oxaloacetic acid. These fragments are generated with considerably smaller intensities. The striking findings of our calculations indicate the different mechanism by which the near 0 eV electron is trapped by the precursor molecule to form the transitory negative ion prior to dissociation. For the oxaloacetic acid, the transitory anion arises from the capture of the electron directly into some valence states, while, for the citric acid, dipole- or multipole-bound states mediate the transition into the valence states. What is also of high importance is that both compounds while undergoing DEA reactions generate highly reactive neutral species that can lead to severe cell damage in a biological environment.

Résumé :
Experimental charge density study has been carried out for Cyclotrimethylene-trinitramine (space group Pbca), an explosive material from a low temperature X-ray diffraction experiment. The electron density was modeled using the Hansen-Coppens multipole model and refined to R=0.032 for 6226 unique observed reflections. The electron density, laplacian and electrostatic potential distributions are reported and discussed, especially, the properties of the bond (3,-1) critical points, which are thought to play a key role in the decomposition of the molecule. From the bond topological analysis of all the bonds, it is observed that the N–N bond is the weakest. The dominating nature of the oxygen atoms was clearly well understood from isosurface electrostatic potential of isolated and symmetrically sitting molecules in the crystal.
