Résumé :
In recent years, in rural geographic studies, the topic of multifunctions of rural areas has been gaining increasing interest, especially in China, which, as an agricultural power, is undergoing new urbanization and rural revitalization. As far as China is concerned, to classify administrative villages from the perspective of their functions will contribute to scientifically guiding the configuration of urban-rural factors in terms of different regions and villages multifunctional types. This paper takes 3042 administrative villages of Tai’an city of Shandong province in eastern China as its basic study units and establishes a mapping system between land use types and rural territorial sub-functions, identifies their multifunctional types via cluster analysis, quantitatively analyzes their influencing factors with multivariate logistic regression, and summarizes their spatial structure characteristics. The results show that: 3042 administrative villages in Tai’an city can be functionally classified into seven types. The village multifunctional types are jointly decided by cities and natural production conditions. The distribution of all types of villages shows a “non-agricultural production to agricultural production” outward expansion structure. Our study can expand the research contents and methods of rural territorial multifunction.

Résumé :
Suitable applications of smart structures for multifunctional spaces are going to be found by this paper. Logical argumentation research method is applied to identify a special smart structure which its features match to architectural requirements of multifunctional spaces. Hence, the smartness of architectural structures has two distinct scales: nanoscale and real scale, the application of these structures is based on two scales. Nanoscale smart structures have the capabilities which differ from real-scale smart structures. The analysis of features of multifunctional spaces shows that these kinds of spaces require structures which are smart both in nanoscale and real scale. As a result, combined-scale smart structures are recommended for multifunctional spaces.

Résumé :
The minimum cost is an important aspect of the spacecraft design. A proposed approach is the multifunctional structure technology, which fully integrates subassemblies and performs both structural and other functions for spacecraft. By combining the structural and functional subsystems into a single unit, the mass and volume savings can be realized. In order to investigate the dynamical properties of the multifunctional structure, which contains viscoelastic components, sine-sweep tests and random vibrations are carried out in present paper. The experimental results show that the multifunctional structure could survive the vibration environment. The first resonance frequency decreases with increment of the testing levels, and the base frequency of the multifunctional structure is larger than 100 Hz for all tested loading cases, meeting the frequency requirement for most spacecraft platforms. The multifunctional structure in this paper has successfully combined the structural and battery function, indicating potential for future lightweight and cost-saving spacecraft application.

Résumé :
An original low-power low-voltage multifunctional structure with improved performances will be further presented, allowing to implement (with minor changes in the design) four important functions: the signal gain with theoretical null distortions, voltage multiplying with very good linearity and simulation of a perfect linear resistor with both positive and negative equivalent resistance. The linearity will be strongly increased by implementing original techniques, while the silicon occupied area per function will be reduced as a result of the circuit multifunctionality. The structure is implemented in 0.35 μm CMOS technology and is supplied at ±3 V. The circuit presents a very good linearity (THD < 0.1% for differential amplifier and active resistors and THD < 0.15% for multiplier), correlated with an extended range of the input voltage (-1.5 V < v1 - v2 < 1.5 V ). The tuning range of the active resistor is about 100kΩ – 1.5MΩ. The second-order effects are also considered, being proposed an original technique based on an anti-parallel connection for compensating the linearity degradation introduced by these effects.

Résumé :
EDPDB is a Fortran program that simplifies the analysis of protein structure and makes it easy to extract various types of geometrical and biologically relevant information for the molecule both in isolation as well as in its crystallographic context. EDPDB offers a large set of functions by which the user can evaluate, select and manipulate the coordinates of protein structures. Types of calculation available include the determination of solvent accessibility, bond lengths and torsion angles, determination of the van der Waals volume of a group of atoms, determination of the best-fit plane through a set of points, evaluation of crystal contacts between a molecule in a crystal and all symmetry-related molecules, and the determination of `hinge-bending' motion between protein domains. It is also possible to compare different structures, to perform coordinate manipulations and to edit coordinate files. The program augments the graphic analysis of protein structure by allowing the user to construct a simple set of commands that will rapidly screen an entire structure. It may also make special purpose analyses feasible without complicated programming.

To make the rapidly developing micro-satellite further smaller and lighter, based on gel polymer lithium-ion battery and high thermal conductivity carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin composites and polymethacrylimide (PMI) foam, a kind of multifunctional satellite structure-battery (SB) is designed in the paper, and an investigation of its thermal property in certain working environments is carried out by numerical simulation approach. The role of two parameters, longitudinal thermal conductivity of carbon fibers and the heat dissipation area, play in the temperature distribution while the SB is working, is analyzed. The result shows that, enlarging the heat disspation area is an effective way to decrease the maximum temperature of SB and it also implys that by selecting the two parameters carefully, the largest temperature rising of the SB could be considerably lowered, alleviating the burden of satellite thermal control subsystem.

Résumé :
Introduction. The purpose of this study is to identify principles and trends in the construction and architecture of cruise ports. Presently, Soviet-era seaport buildings fail to meet cruise tourism development requirements and current norms and standards applicable to this type of structures. Today Russian seaports are limited to solely one function, that is, transportation of passengers, whereas abroad such structures have been transformed into multifunctional complexes. Materials and methods. Theoretical analysis of scientific literature, graphic materials, and written sources were used. The research methods include systematic, spatial, and socio-functional approaches. Results. The article presents the history of formation of the architectural appearance and the functional purpose of cruise ports. It specifies principal requirements and design standards for similar structures, as well as their integration into the modern urban environment. The co-authors offer solutions to relevant problems, related to the architecture of seaport buildings in Russia, using a number of selected international design cases of multifunctional marine complexes. Conclusions. By transforming obsolete buildings of seaports multifunctional complexes, we end up with a new level of structures. The competent architectural planning structure will allow urban authorities to create interesting facilities that bring not only transport, but also commercial, recreational and social benefits to the city. The structure and architectural appearance of a cruise port must be designed with regard for contemporary design standards and encompass a wide range of functional, technical, urban planning, artistic and aesthetic requirements.

Résumé :
Cellular porous materials are an attractive choice for lightweight structural design. However, though their open porous architecture is ideally suited for multifunctional applications, their use is typically limited by the pore sizes achievable by traditional as well as advanced fabrication processes. Here, we present an alternative route towards overcoming this pore size limitation by leveraging our recent success in printing fibrous structures. This is achieved by superimposing a fibrous network on a load-bearing, open-celled porous architecture. The multifunctional structure is 3D printed using a novel technique that enables us to simultaneously print a load-bearing scaffold and the necessary fibrous network. The acoustic properties of the printed structures are tested using a normal-incidence impedance tube method. Our results show that such structures can provide very high absorption at low frequencies while retaining the mechanical performance of the underlying architected structure.

Résumé :
In the project multiSat multifunctional composite structures for satellite application have been developed. Functions such as protection against space debris, radiation shielding and passive thermal control have been integrated into the load-bearing composite spacecraft structure by use of suitable materials and components. Sandwich panels have been studied as representative structural parts of a conventional satellite structure. Measures for increased space debris protection include the substitution of the conventional honeycomb core by 3D-printed aluminum cellular structures and the reinforcement of the sandwich panel by integration of high performance fabrics which effectively break up and catch impacting debris particles. This paper describes the development and design of multifunctional sandwich concepts with increased impact protection capability and presents the experimental results of hypervelocity impact testing with different types of CFRP sandwich panels.

Résumé :
This article examines the architectural and spatial organization of a pedestrian street, presented as an object in the form of a multifunctional complex. The subject of the study is the architectural and typological features of the components of a multifunctional pedestrian street. The novelty of the approach lies in the representation of the street as an integral object in the form of a multifunctional complex in the structure of the residential quarter of St. Petersburg. The article also contains a systematic analysis of architectural planning, urban planning and compositional solutions for objects of this type. The analysis is based on combining the principle of operation of a pedestrian street with the criteria of multifunctionality. The main section of this study is devoted to an overview of the structure of diversified objects included in the pedestrian street building. The scientific novelty of the work consists in considering a pedestrian street as an independent object in the form of a multifunctional complex incorporated into the structure of a residential quarter. For this purpose, the project "Multifunctional Street in the structure of the Lenexpo quarter" (St. Petersburg) was carried out by the Bachelor of Architecture Peter Dmitrievich Cherepanov under the guidance of Konstantin Ivanovich Kolodin, Associate Professor of the Department of Architectural Design of the St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (SPbGASU). On the basis of the completed project, a typology of objects combined into a multifunctional complex was formulated. The project was developed taking into account the multisectoral unification, as well as taking into account the principles of modular structuring of space and the construction of individual buildings and structures. The mechanism of the pedestrian street operation was calculated, which was reflected in architectural planning and spatial solutions when designing this complex. According to the content of the main sections of the study, conclusions were formulated that take into account the prospects for the development of such architectural objects in the future.

Résumé :
Spacecraft must withstand rigorous mechanical environment experiences such as acceleration, noise, vibration, and shock during the process of launching, satellite-vehicle separation, and so on. In this paper, a new spacecraft multifunctional structure concept designed by us is introduced. The multifunctional structure has the functions of not only load bearing, but also vibration reduction, energy source, thermal control, and so on, and we adopt a series of viscoelastic parts as connections between substructures. Especially in this paper, a vibration antiresonance design method is proposed to realize the vibration reduction. The complex zero-point equations of the vibration system are firstly established, and then the vibration antiresonance design for the system is achieved. For solving the difficulties due to viscoelastic characteristics of the connecting parts, we present the determining formulas to obtain the structural parameters, so that the complex zero-point equations can be satisfied. Numerical simulation and ground experiment demonstrate the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed method. This method can solve the structural vibration control problem under the function constraints of load bearing and energy supplying and will expand the performance of spacecraft functional modules.

Résumé :
CubeSats primary structures are usually made with aluminium alloys, with few examples of CFRP primary structures under study. Power system battery arrays usually occupy spacecraft internal volume and mass that should be available to the payload. A CFRP structural/battery array configuration has been designed, allowing to integrate the electrical power system in the bus primary structure. Its configuration has been developed with the modular design philosophy of the AraMiS CubeSat. It is sized as a tile, mounted on an external face of the 1U CubeSat. It accommodates two solar cells, while the opposite face accommodates power system circuitry. Following a cellular structure concept, a set of commercial LiPo batteries has been placed between two CFRP panels and spaced out with CFRP ribs. Compliance with launch mechanical loads has been evaluated with a finite element analysis. A preliminary thermal analysis has been performed to simulate a LEO orbit environment. The results indicate that even with a low degree of structural integration, more volume and mass can be allocated to the payload, with respect to traditional, functionally separated designs in aluminium alloy. The low degree of integration allows to employ relatively cheap, commercial off-the-shelf components.

Résumé :
This paper aims to integrate vibrational energy harvesters into bridge structures in a holistic fashion that can lessen energy demands for safe bridge operation thus potentially increasing their sustainability. Computationally efficient methodologies, that target the locality of the connection of the harvesters, are utilized to determine optimal harvester frequencies that maximize the total power generation of installed vibrational energy harvesters. Previous findings from the authors indicate that a distributed configuration of harvesters can generate equal or more power than one traditional large harvester when attached to a building structure with total equivalent harvester mass. This paper investigates whether those findings also apply to bridge structures. Results from a cable-stayed bridge model equipped with two or more harvesters along its deck are presented and discussed. Distributed gardens are investigated as a means to integrate the harvester mass with the pre-existing bridge structure. It is found that an equivalent, slightly larger, amount of power is captured by the distributed garden design compared to a single pair of large harvesters placed near the center of the bridge. This performance is very promising as the distributed garden design would enable the enhancement of the structure’s aesthetics while also potentially creating ecological and environmental benefits.

Résumé :
A fabrication method of a multifunctional hybrid material is achieved by using the insoluble organic nacre matrix of the Haliotis laevigata shell infiltrated with gelatin as a confined reaction environment. Inside this organic scaffold magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) are synthesized. The amount of MNPs can be controlled through the synthesis protocol therefore mineral loadings starting from 15 wt % up to 65 wt % can be realized. The demineralized organic nacre matrix is characterized by small-angle and very-small-angle neutron scattering (SANS and VSANS) showing an unchanged organic matrix structure after demineralization compared to the original mineralized nacre reference. Light microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy studies of stained samples show the presence of insoluble proteins at the chitin surface but not between the chitin layers. Successful and homogeneous gelatin infiltration in between the chitin layers can be shown. The hybrid material is characterized by TEM and shows a layered structure filled with MNPs with a size of around 10 nm. Magnetic analysis of the material demonstrates superparamagnetic behavior as characteristic for the particle size. Simulation studies show the potential of collagen and chitin to act as nucleators, where there is a slight preference of chitin over collagen as a nucleator for magnetite. Colloidal-probe AFM measurements demonstrate that introduction of a ferrogel into the chitin matrix leads to a certain increase in the stiffness of the composite material.

Résumé :
Diverse wavefront modulations with multifunctional acoustic devices have been of great interest to physics and engineering communities. However, traditional design methods of multifunctional acoustic devices rely on a deterministic physical model and redundant iterative optimization, resulting in inflexibility and consuming of time. In this work, we present and experimentally implement a deep learning-assisted tunable acoustic metagrating for multifunctional wavefront modulation with 95.2% accuracy and a 105 order of magnitude decrease in computational time compared to a classical optimization method. The presented tunable structure formed by a periodic array of 3C-shaped unit cells excites controllable Willis coupling, exhibiting corresponding asymmetrical scattering patterns. With the support of a deep learning strategy, the optimal configuration between structure parameters and Willis coupling magnitude could be efficiently confirmed, realizing various extraordinary wavefront modulations, including abnormal reflection, perfect beam splitting, and multi-channel energy distribution in arbitrary ratios. The polarizability tensor retrieval method is used to characterize the Willis coupling of different modulation structures, demonstrating the refined abstraction of the deep learning strategy on Willis coupling. Meanwhile, the numerical and experimental results are in good agreement with the desired wavefront modulation, verifying the effectiveness of the proposed method. Our work develops deep learning-assisted multifunctional wavefront modulation with the advantages of high accuracy, efficiency, flexibility, and refined abstraction of a physical mechanism, paving the way for a combination of deep learning and pragmatic multifunctional acoustic applications.

Résumé :
This paper is focused on the analysis of a multifunctional structure developed by the Second University of Naples, named OBREC, which is an Overtopping Breakwater for Energy Conversion. The hydraulic and structural performance are evaluated by means of the 2DV numerical model IH-2VOF developed by the University of Cantabria, in terms of average discharge rate, wave reflection coefficient and pressures acting on the structure. The results are compared with the laboratory experiments carried out at Aalborg University (Denmark) and with recent formulae and a new Artificial Neural Network. Furthermore, the numerical model is used to obtain information related to the wave loadings where experimental data were not available. This numerical analysis is a useful support to the ongoing monitoring of the prototype installation in the port of Naples.

Résumé :
CubeSats usually adopt aluminum alloys for primary structures, and a number of studies exist on Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) primary structures. The internal volume of a spacecraft is usually occupied by battery arrays, reducing the volume available to the payload. In this paper, a CFRP structural/battery array configuration has been designed in order to integrate the electrical power system with the spacecraft bus primary structure. The configuration has been designed according to the modular design philosophy introduced in the AraMiS project. The structure fits on an external face of a 1U CubeSat. Its external side houses two solar cells and the opposite side houses power system circuitry. An innovative cellular structure concept has been adopted and a set of commercial LiPo batteries has been embedded between two CFRP panels and spaced out with CFRP ribs. Compatibility with launch mechanical loads and vibrations has been shown with a finite element analysis. The results suggest that, even with a low degree of structural integration applied to a composite structural battery, more volume and mass can be made available for the payload, with respect to traditional, functionally separated structures employing aluminum alloy. The low degree of integration is introduced to allow the use of relatively cheap and commercial-off-the-shelf components.

Résumé :
Within the framework of the German national project multiSat multifunctional composite structures for satellite applications are developed. The objective is the integration of passive and active functions into the load-bearing spacecraft structure by using suitable materials, components and mechanisms. The passive functions include heat transfer, radiation shielding and protection against space debris impacts, whereas the active functions comprise electric energy and data transfer and vibration reduction. Due to their multi-layer build-up composite materials are suitable for functional integration since each layer can be defined and designed to provide one or more specific functions. The concept of a multifunctional structure allows for the reduction of the overall satellite mass and of installation space required for subsystems. It also opens up new opportunities for highly integrative and standardized production processes and lower total costs and time for manufacturing, qualification and launch. This paper describes the development and design of a concept for a multifunctional sandwich panel and the results of the analyses, numerical simulations and experiments conducted at coupon level.

Résumé :
Energy harvesting from structural vibrations using an array of multifunctional resonators based on the theory of locally resonant materials is demonstrated. Such locally resonant structures exhibit a stop band for elastic wave propagation. The band gap frequency range depends on the local resonance frequency of the microstructure. One method to realize this is through the use of an array of embedded resonators where the external work done is stored as kinetic energy of the internal mass when the forcing frequency is close to the local resonance frequency. This mechanism can be used to harvest energy by converting the kinetic energy into electrical energy, thus bestowing a multifunctional utility to the structure. We use a spring-loaded magnet enclosed in a capped poly(methyl methacrylate) tube equipped with copper coils to create a unit cell that acts both as a resonator and as a linear generator. Experiments on a serial array of seven unit cells exhibit a band gap between 146.5 (local resonance frequency) and 171 Hz with a peak voltage generation of 3.03 V at steady state. The continuous effective power generated by a single unit cell across a 1-Ω load resistor is 36 mW, indicating the feasibility of constructing vibration isolation structures that can power simple electronic and microelectromechanical systems devices. The applicability of using the device as a transducer to measure the local resonance frequency and the global resonance frequency of the structure is also discussed.

Résumé :
Art and science represent human creativity and rational thinking, respectively. When the two seemingly opposite fields are intertwined, there is always a life-changing spark. In particular, the integration of ancient traditional Chinese art into the latest electronic devices is always been an unexcavated topic. Fabricating two-dimensional material with a tensile strain less than 3% with an ultimate global stretch has been an important problem that plagues the current flexible electronics field. The current research is limited to material in small scale, and it is always necessary to develop and extend large-sized flexible electronic systems. Here, inspired by the traditional Chinese paper-cut structure, we present a highly deformable multifunctional electronic system based on the MoS2 nanosheet. In this work, we first demonstrate how the traditional paper-cut structure can open the view of flexible electronics. In order to obtain a large area of MoS2 with excellent performance, we use a metal-assisted exfoliation method to transfer MoS2, followed by fabricating a field effect transistor to characterize its excellent electrical properties. Two photodetectors and a temperature sensor are produced with good performance. The mechanical simulation proves that the structure has more advantages in stretchability than other typical paper-cut structures. From the experimental and mechanical point of view, it is proved that the device can work stably under high deformation. We finally show that the device has broad application prospects in highly deformed organs, tissues, and joints. These findings set a good example of traditional Chinese culture to guide innovation in the field of electronic devices.

Résumé :
Background: Cross-linking structure of polyurethanes determines no degradability of these materials. However, introducing the hydrolysable substrates (of natural or synthetic origin) into the cross-linked polyurethanes structure makes them biodegradable. Moreover compounds (such as polycaprolactone triol, glycerin, lysine triisocyanate, etc.) that are used for polyurethane cross-linking are degraded in non-toxic products. All these kinds of compounds can be introduced into soft or hard segments via urethane bonds. Objective: The review focuses on kind of multifunctional polyols and isocyanates, and low molecular crosslinkers used for cross-linked polyurethanes obtaining. These compounds are natural substrates (in the native state or after modification) or are synthetic compounds with degradable linkages. They belong to polyesters, plant oils, proteins, saccharides, and others (e.g. lignocellulosic materials), and they are synthesized chemically or via biosynthesis by algae, plants, microorganisms, and by animals. Conclusion: Incorporation of degradable groups (such as ester moieties) into the polymer structure, and using of substrates with the structure known and metabolized by microorganisms for soft or hard segments building, facilitate degradation of cross-linked polyurethanes.
