Résumé :
Abstract The calculations of transient processes in ship electric propulsion systems (EPS) with semiconductor converters (SC) show that when the inverter transistors are locked, overvoltage occurs that may break through the insulation of propeller motors (PM). A feature of this overvoltage is its short duration and large value. Pulsed overvoltage of small duration and the EPS value of dozens or more kilovolts may occur in the circuits of the inverter supplying the PM winding. The main cause of overvoltage is the EPS self-induction resulting from rapid current reduction in circuits with inductances, including in motor windings, when the inverter transistors are locked. The paper presents the results of mathematical modeling of the processes arising when the inverter transistors functioning as part of the frequency converter are locked. The results of the analysis confirmed the possibility of overvoltage on the PM winding, which should be taken into account when designing the EPS and selecting equipment.

Résumé :
The increasing interest in employing wide-bandgap (WBG) drive systems has brought about very high power, high-frequency inverters enjoying switching frequencies up to hundreds of kilohertz. However, voltage surges with steep fronts, caused by turning semiconductor switches on/off in inverters, travel through the cable and are reflected at interfaces due to impedance mismatches, giving rise to overvoltages at motor terminals and in motor windings. The phenomena typically associated with these repetitive overvoltages are partial discharges and heating in the insulation system, both of which contribute to insulation system degradation and may lead to premature failures. In this article, taking the mentioned challenges into account, the repetitive transient overvoltage phenomenon in WBG drive systems is evaluated at motor terminals and in motor windings by implementing a precise multiconductor transmission line (MCTL) model in the time domain considering skin and proximity effects. In this regard, first, a finite element method (FEM) analysis is conducted in COMSOL Multiphysics to calculate parasitic elements of the motor; next, the vector fitting approach is employed to properly account for the frequency dependency of calculated elements, and, finally, the model is developed in EMTP-RV to assess the transient overvoltages at motor terminals and in motor windings. As shown, the harshest situation occurs in turns closer to motor terminals and/or turns closer to the neutral point depending on whether the neutral point is grounded or floating, how different phases are connected, and how motor phases are excited by pulse width modulation (PWM) voltages.

Résumé :
The insulation system’s dielectric of the electric motor is very often subjected to severe electrical stress generated by the high dv/dt seen at the machine’s terminals. The electrical stress and high reflected wave transient overvoltage are even more evident in case of high-speed machines fed by high-frequency (HF) converters featuring very fast wide-bandgap devices. They are promoting the occurrence of partial discharges and consequently accelerate ageing. As this is serious issue and the main cause of the drive failure, it is important to analyse and characterise the surges at the motor terminals. Several HF models of motors have been proposed in the literature for this purpose. This article presents a survey on HF motor models, which is crucial in understanding and studying the most critical parameter identification and overvoltage mitigation techniques. Moreover, it offers a comparison of the models’ main features as well as a comparison with the experimental voltage waveform at motor terminals. A general overview of the partial discharge (PD) phenomenon is also provided, as it is favoured by HF operation and together with HF motor modelling provides key insights to the insulation ageing issue. In particular, an analysis of the effects of PWM waveform affecting insulation is given, as well as useful methods for developing strategies for the inspection and maintenance of winding insulation.

Résumé :
This paper focuses on the investigation and implementation of a high-performance power conversion system to reduce the overvoltage phenomenon in variable speed electric drive applications. Particularly, the pros and cons of using Silicon Carbide power MOSFETs in the power converter when a long power cable is employed in electric motor drive systems has been addressed. The three-phase two level inverter with the addition of snubber circuits that consist of capacitors and diodes has been investigated, designed and tested in order to mitigate the overvoltage problems without sacrificing the conversion efficiency. Given that the snubber circuit added to the switches can increase losses, an additional circuit is used to recover the energy from the snubber circuit. The proposed analysis has been then validated through an experimental campaign performed on the converter prototype. The experimental results show that the proposed converter can reduce the overvoltage at the electric motor terminals with excellent conversion efficiency compared to the classical solution like the three-phase two level inverter.

Résumé :
AbstractIn order to solve the problem that the long cable variable voltage and variable frequency (VVVF) system does not adopt an effective capacitor voltage sharing control method, resulting in a poor effect of resonance overvoltage control, the resonance overvoltage control algorithm of the long cable VVVF system based on discrete mathematics is studied. First, the long cable frequency conversion drive system is established. In order to ensure voltage loss in the range of motor requirements, a frequency converter–cable–motor (ICM) system connection mode is used to maintain the system operation. Based on the research of the capacitor voltage balance control strategy of a long cable frequency conversion drive system, the discrete mathematical model of the AC side of the ICM system is established by using this control strategy. The improved constant active power controller is obtained by establishing the mathematical model, and the resonant overvoltage in a long cable frequency conversion drive is realized by using the constant active power controller. The experimental results show that the algorithm can effectively control the resonance overvoltage phenomenon in the long cable frequency control system, and the control accuracy is over 97%. It has good performance and can be applied in practice.

Résumé :
Wide bandgap (WBG) power devices such as silicon carbide (SiC) can viably supply high speed electrical drives, due to their capability to increase efficiency and reduce the size of the power converters. On the other hand, high frequency operation of the SiC devices emphasizes the effect of parasitics, which generates reflected wave transient overvoltage on motor terminals, reducing the life time and the reliability of electric drives. In this paper, a SiC metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) based two level (2L) inverter is systematically studied and compared to the performance of Si insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) based three level (3L) neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter topologies, for high speed AC motor loads, in terms of efficiency, overvoltages, heat sink design, and cost. A fair comparison was introduced for the first time, having the same output voltage capabilities, output current total harmonic distortion (THD), and overvoltages for the three systems. The analysis indicated the convenience of using the SiC MOSFET based 2L inverter for lower output power. In the case of the maximum output power, the heat sink volume was found to be 20% higher for the 2L SiC based inverter when compared to 3L NPC topologies. Simulations were carried out by realistic dynamic models of power switch modules obtained from the manufacturer’s experimental tests and verified both in the LTspice and PLECS simulation packages.

Résumé :
ABSTRACTIn the current era of globalization, various human jobs depend on electrical equipment such as three-phase induction motors. Three-phase induction motors are very important to use according to their roles and functions. The occurrence of voltage variations in the electric power system is due to the magnitude of the voltages between the three phases which are not the same so that there are differences in the angle of the R, S and T phases, which causes an uneven load overload in the electrical distribution system. Among the disturbances that can occur are overvoltage, under voltage, unbalance voltage between phases, overload, and overheating. Based on these problems, a three-phase induction motor protection system was designed, the system uses current, voltage, temperature sensors, which functions to measure the value when a disturbance occurs, a magnetic contactor as a breaker and a liaison when the disturbance is given in accordance with the set point value given to the microcontroller. The results of the research for unbalanced voltage of V1 112 V, V2 114 V, V3 108 V, overvoltage of V1 228 V, V2 207 V, V3 264 V, over current of A1 104 A, A2 107 A, A3 0.77 A , the overload on the resistance source is 333 ?, 250 ?, 200 ?, 167 ?, and the overheating is 40.75 ºC at 6.5 minutes with tripping conditions in each test. The final results of this study indicate that the protection system which is designed is better used for three-phase induction motors. Keywords: unbalaced, disturbances, protection systems, sensors, magnetic contactor, microcontroller.
