La onicofagia es una conducta poco adaptativa que presentan algunos sujetos; esta patología les provoca una necesidad de “morder” compulsivamente sus uñas. Si no se trata precozmente tiende a perpetuarse en el tiempo, ya que es una tendencia que no disminuye con la edad, y se ve incrementada significativamente ante situaciones de estrés o de ansiedad. En este estudio de caso se analizará la intervención cognitivo-conductual con un adulto de 25 años diagnosticado de TDAH, cuyo objetivo responde a la necesidad de erradicar la conducta de morderse las uñas durante esta actual etapa pandémica, con la finalidad última de garantizar las recomendaciones más básicas del protocolo COVID-19. Este tipo de conductas, muy peligrosas por la transmisión del virus a través de las manos, son especialmente frecuentesen los pacientescon trastornos del desarrollo,yespecialmenteen jóvenescon TDAH,como en nuestro caso. La intervención, empleando como terapia el método cognitivo-conductual con reforzadores negativos y positivos e infografías de la Consejería de Sanidad de la Junta de Extremadura, que recalcaban la importancia de las medidas básicas de salud e higiene de manos, ha alcanzado una alta tasa de éxito. Este hecho viene avalado por la eficiencia y eficacia de la propia terapia, que duró 90 días, y que se implementó durante el periodo de confinamiento domiciliario provocado por la pandemia Covid-19 entre los meses de marzo, abril, mayo y junio. Los resultados mostraron una disminución paulatina de la frecuencia de morderse las uñas, siendo exponencial desde la primera semana hasta erradicar la misma en las últimas semanas de tratamiento.

Here Horace's Catius lists restorative foods for drinkers. There seem to be two stages of drinking and two corresponding restoratives: the ‘marcens’ or drooping imbiber may be revived for more by prawns and snails, but not by lettuce, bad for the acidic and vinous stomach, while the man who is further gone needs ham and sausages or anything of that sort from the cook-shops. ‘Immorsus’ causes some difficulty here. It is usually taken with an understood ‘stomachus’ and translated ‘roused’ or ‘excited’ (with wine), but it is surely better to understand not ‘stomachus’ but ‘potor’, giving the elegant balance ‘marcentem…recreabis…potorem…[potor] flagitat immorsus refici’, with both verbs of restoration having the drinker for object. The sense usually given to ‘immorsus’ also seems doubtful: ‘immordeo’ is found only twice in classical Latin and only here in this metaphorical sense, and ‘mordeo’ in such contexts means not to rouse the stomach but to cause it to smart or sting, hardly the effect of wine – cf. Scribonius Largus 188 ‘[aconita] mordet autem stomachum et cor adficit’, Pliny, Nat. 27.133 ‘[radix] gustu acri mordet’.

Im Rahmen dieses Essays wird diskutiert, ob das Morden oder gar der Massenmord anhand der Kenntnis neuropsychologischer Konzepte erklärt werden kann. Hierbei wird deutlich, dass es quasi jedem Erklärungsversuch für Mord und Massenmord schwer fallen wird, Mord oder Massenmord ohne Zuhilfenahme von konventionellen Regeln zu definieren. Demzufolge bleibt es auch schwierig, wenn nicht gar unmöglich, menschliches Verhalten, dass in Morde oder Massenmorde mündet, mit einfachen und eingängigen neuropsychologischen Modellen zu erklären. Es wird allerdings deutlich, dass das menschliche Gehirn mit einem höchst flexiblen und „lernfähigen“ sozialen Kontrollsystem ausgestattet ist, dass sich an verschiedene soziale Szenarien anpassen kann. Die hohe Anpassungsfähigkeit eröffnet allerdings auch Möglichkeiten für therapeutische und erzieherische Ansätze zur Verhaltensänderung.

In den Ermittlungen zur Mordserie des NSU ist eine eklatante Blindheit der Sicherheitsbehörden in der Wahrnehmung von Rassismus sichtbar geworden. Es stellt sich daher die Frage, ob die Kategoriensysteme zur Erfassung rassistischer Gewalt ausreichend sind. Der sogenannten »Extremismustheorie« kommt dabei ein zentraler Stellenwert zu. Ausgehend von einer Sozialpsychologie des Nationalgefühls kann gezeigt werden, dass die Kategorie der »Mitte«, wie sie von diesen Ansätzen formuliert wird, leicht mit der nationalen Eigengruppe identifiziert werden kann und eine solche Identifikation von VertreterInnen der »Extremismustheorie« auch nahegelegt wird. Die Erkennung politisch motivierter Gewalt wird dabei an die Wahrnehmung eines Angriffs auf die nationale Eigengruppe geknüpft, die bei rassistischer Gewalt ausbleibt. Dies könnte einer der Gründe für das Nichterkennen des rassistischen Motivs der NSU-Morde sein.

Seit den 1990er Jahren wird die Grenzregion zwischen Mexiko und den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika – insbesondere Ciudad Juárez – von Hunderten von Feminiziden erschüttert. Es handelt sich um Morde an Mädchen und Frauen, deren geschändete und verstümmelte Körper später in der Wüste in der Umgebung der Stadt oder auf Müllhalden wiederauftauchen, während die Täter ungestraft davonkommen. Diese Leichname sind nicht nur Ausdruck verschiedener Arten von Gewalt, sondern verweisen auch auf bestimmte soziale und kulturelle Strukturen, die zu den beschriebenen Morden führen, auf Korruption oder auch auf (postkoloniale) hierarchische Machtstrukturen. In den letzten Jahren haben die Medien den Feminiziden in der Grenzregion immer mehr Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet, sowohl von nationaler, als auch von internationaler Warte. Der vorliegende Beitrag analysiert die literarische Darstellung der Feminizide im Roman 2666 (2004) von Roberto Bolaño und möchte Perspektiven und Möglichkeiten einer solchen literarischen Darstellung von Gewalt beleuchten.

Nur Wenige kennen den ersten Täter, der mit dem Etikett „Serial Killer“ versehen wurde. Und dann ist es ausgerechnet ein Arzt, der in einigen Geschichtsbüchern der Kriminologie als der weltweit erste Serienmörder geführt wird. Dies ist die Geschichte von H. H. Holmes, der sich selbst als Teufel bezeichnete. In seinem Horror-Haus fanden die Ermittler Überreste von hundert Leichen. Experten vermuten, dass er bis zu 200 Menschen umbrachte. Gestanden, bevor er hingerichtet wurde, hat Holmes 27 Morde. Damit ist der Namensvetter des britischen Roman-Detektivs zwar nicht der Serienkiller, mit den meisten Morden auf dem Konto, aber die perfide Art, mit der er seine Opfer in ein eigens dafür geschaffenes Hotel lockte und sie darin quälte, bevor er sie auf brutalste Weise umbrachte, machen ihn zu einem der schrecklichsten Serienmörder aller Zeiten.

Abstract Many rose breeders have sought the often elusive combination of plant quality and hardiness, but have had to compromise by accepting undesirable plant quality such as single flowers or large plant size to obtain hardy cultivars. The breeding program at the Morden Research Station was designed to develop hardy, attractive roses for the Canadian prairie conditions. Plants of hybrid tea and floribunda roses were used as sources of desirable foliage and flower traits. The main source of hardiness was a native prairie rose, Rosa arkansana Porter. Cultivars developed from this program are known collectively as the Parkland Rose Series (1). In the past, seedlings in the breeding program were generally large bushes, 1.5-2.0 m in height; however, in 1971 a few smaller plants 40–50 cm high were observed. ‘Morden Amorette’ and ‘Morden Cardinette’ roses were selected from this latter group and introduced by the Morden Research Station in 1977 and 1980, respectively.

Abstract This article examines written accounts of the disease mordexi roughly between 1500 and 1700 to explore the conceptual frameworks and rhetorical strategies used by early modern authors to understand and present a local disease encountered in the East Indies to European readers. Europeans understood mordexi within a framework of Galenic medicine that both normalized the tropical affliction and distinguished it from other diseases. The cause and prevention of the disease were likewise explained through the effects of local flora and climate on the body. Native treatments for mordexi, however, did not fit so easily within Hippocratic-Galenic notions of restoring humoral balance and even challenged the superiority of European medical practitioners. The article concludes that the rhetorical strategies used by European authors to convey the efficacy of native healing practices point to the limitations of a Galenic framework and how writers worked around these conceptual limits.

The Chabauty–Kim method allows one to find rational points on curves under certain technical conditions, generalising Chabauty’s proof of the Mordell conjecture for curves with Mordell–Weil rank less than their genus. We show how the Chabauty–Kim method, when these technical conditions are satisfied in depth 2, may be applied to bound the number of rational points on a curve of higher rank. This provides a non-abelian generalisation of Coleman’s effective Chabauty theorem.

Experiments were conducted for 4 yr at Lethbridge and Brooks, Alberta, and at Morden, Manitoba, to determine the effect of seeding date, cultivar (Saffire, S-208 and Cargill-3) and location on safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) yield, oil content, test weight and maturity; and the effect of accumulated degree–days (DD) on yield, oil content and test weight. The early-maturing cultivar, Saffire, produced the least variable yields across seeding dates. For locations and years where fall frosts did not occur before maturity, Cargill-3 produced good yields, even with late seeding; S-208 yielded less in similar situations; however, S-208 generally outyielded Saffire. Highest yields were obtained at Brooks by seeding in late April, at Lethbridge, by seeding in late April or early May. However, at both Alberta locations, Saffire could usually be seeded to mid-May without major yield reduction. At Morden, seeding during the third week of May provided optimum yields. Seeding date had little influence on oil content. Later seeding dates tended to reduce days to maturity and test weight. Safflower matured 3 wk earlier at Morden (earliest site) than at Lethbridge (latest site), with maturity at Brooks averaging 4–8 days earlier than at Lethbridge. Plants required more DD to reach maturity at Morden than at either Alberta location. DD was positively associated with yield of S-208 at both Lethbridge and Morden; for Saffire, only at Lethbridge; and for Cargill-3, only at Morden. Following the discovery of substantial differences in the development and severity of Fusarium wilt in Linum usitatissimum L. (flax) wilt nurseries in western Canada, a study of the population structure of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lini (Bolley) Snyd. & Hans using vegetative compatibility analysis was initiated. Vegetative compatibility was determined using nitrate non-utilizing mutants. From a total of 105 isolates, 74 were assigned to 12 vegetative compatibility groups (VCG 0440-04411), 22 were not compatible with any other isolates and 9 did not produce mutants. The populations of F. oxysporum f.sp. lini in Fusarium wilt nurseries in western Canada were significantly different. There was a predominant VCG in each of the nurseries, which was either nonexistent or not common in other nurseries, VCG 0440 in Indian Head, 0441 in Treherne, 0442 in Morden-80, 0443 in Saskatoon, and 0444 in Morden-60. There were only three overlapping VCGs; VCG 0440 was common to Morden-60 and Indian Head and VCGs 0442 and 0444 were common to Morden-60 and Morden-80. The differences in disease development and severity observed previously may be due to the differences in the population structure of the pathogen. These findings have significant implications for the approaches to breeding for Fusarium wilt resistance in flax.Key words: Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lini, flax, Fusarium wilt, genetic diversity, vegetative compatibility.

La lectura compartida es frecuente en la infancia. Sin embargo, la participación de infantes menores de un año en esta actividad ha sido poco explorada. Este trabajo describe y analiza las intervenciones de bebés de 9 meses en la lectura conjunta materno-infantil en hogares argentinos. Transcribimos y analizamos filmaciones realizadas por 10 madres. Clasificamos las intervenciones en: acción responsiva o espontánea; vocalización responsiva o espontánea; acción responsiva + vocalización; acción espontánea + vocalización. Los bebés realizaron mayoritariamente acciones espontáneas (con o sin vocalizaciones). Luego, clasificamos las acciones (con o sin vocalizaciones) en: convencionales (pasar la página, señalar) o manipulativas (morder, sacudir los libros); otras no orientadas (tomar otro objeto, mirar fuera del escenario). Encontramos que las acciones fueron principalmente manipulativas. Finalmente, clasificamos las acciones en: inespecíficas (morder el libro, sacudirlo) u orientadas (intentar agarrar los objetos representados). Predominaron las acciones inespecíficas. Los hallazgos muestran bebés sensoriomotores en exploración. Sin embargo, algunas intervenciones revelaron también un incipiente desarrollo simbólico al usar los libros convencionalmente y reconocer las imágenes como objetos simbólicos. La lectura compartida es un escenario en el que se accede a diversos sistemas de representación (imágenes, números, letras), permitiendo desarrollar tempranamente un potencial simbólico en contextos sociales relevantes.

In the Euclidean plane, the Erdős-Mordell inequality indicates that the sum of distances of an interior point of a triangle T to its vertices is larger than or equal to twice the sum of distances to the sides of T. We extend this theorem to arbitrary (normed or) Minkowski planes, and we generalize in an analogous way some other related inequalities, e.g. referring to polygons. We also derive Minkowskian analogues of Erdős-Mordell inequalities for tetrahedra and n-dimensional simplices. Finally, some related inequalities are obtained which additionally involve total edge-lengths of simplices.
