Résumé :
Background: Moral distress is one of intensive care unit nurses’ major problems, which may happen due to various reasons, and has several consequences. Due to various moral distress outcomes in intensive care unit nurses, and their impact on nurses’ personal and professional practice, recognizing moral distress is very important. Research objective: The aim of this study was to determine correlation between moral distress with burnout and anticipated turnover in intensive care unit nurses. Research design: This study is a descriptive-correlation research. Participants and research context: A total of 159 intensive care unit nurses were selected from medical sciences universities in Iran. Data collection instruments included “demographic questionnaire,” “ICU Nurses’ Moral Distress Scale,” “Copenhagen Burnout Inventory” and “Hinshaw and Atwood Turnover Scale.” Data analysis was done by using SPSS19. Ethical considerations: Informed consent from samples and research approval was obtained from Shahid Beheshti Medical Sciences University Research Ethics Board in Tehran. Findings: The findings showed intensive care unit nurses’ moral distress and anticipated turnover was high, but burnout was moderate. The results revealed that there was a positive statistical correlation between intensive care unit nurses’ age, their work experience and the fraction of nurses’ number to number of intensive care unit beds with their moral distress and burnout. However, there were no correlation between gender, marriage status, educational degree and work shift and moral distress. Discussion: Some of the findings of this research are consistent with other studies and some of them are inconsistent. Conclusion: Similarly, moral distress with burnout and anticipated turnover did not have statistical correlation. However, a positive correlation was found between burnout and anticipated turnover. The results showed that increase in the recruitment of young nurses, and nursing personnel, and diminishing intensive care unit nurses’ moral distress, burnout and their turnover intention are essential.

Résumé :
The study investigates the influence of mental health on the professionalism of upcoming ship captains, with particular attention given to the development of a comprehensive knowledge and skills system that can foster a positive moral and psychological atmosphere on board. In order to guarantee efficient, accident-free and conflict-free work from the crew, it is essential for captains to consider stress factors, psychological fatigue and the unique psychological well-being of seafarers during management activities on board the ship. At the same time, an important factor that helps crew members endure the conditions of exposure to negative psychogenic factors and maintain high performance is a favorable moral and psychological climate in the team. The main directions of optimizing the moral and psychological climate on the ship are: preservation and support of the professional potential of the ship’s crew members in order to increase the level of motivation of sailors; to create a favorable psychological atmosphere and reduce conflict situations, it is suggested to use a flexible leadership style, apply an individual approach to each crew member, use the potential of the team to achieve the set goals; the formation of positive relationships in the ship’s crew, which contribute to strengthening interaction and maintaining a favorable atmosphere in the ship’s crew. The article emphasizes that the creation of a favorable moral and psychological climate on the ship is greatly facilitated by the analysis of individual and group thoughts, as well as those moods that create a collective psychological state and determine the conformity of the moral and psychological climate with the management style of the top manager of the ship.

Résumé :
My aim is to consider how private philanthropy – and that of foundations specifically – can better serve its social purposes. What I have to say may strike professionals in the field as naive. Admittedly my perspective is limited, for I have sat only on the grantee side of the desk. But I have also often tried to put myself into the grantor's frame of mind. The impressions gained in that way have been confirmed and modified by numerous recent conversations in preparation for this paper. The heads of foundations with whom I talked, the board members, and program officers, all were warmly forthcoming, forgiving of my naivete, and very helpful. I hope that what may be construed as criticism in what I have to say will not be taken as betrayal of those good offices. I mean it as support and encouragement of the positive intent I found in every instance. When I accepted the invitation to write a paper on moral values and philanthropy, I first reflected on my own experience. I have often been troubled by my own moral standards in dealing with foundations. In nearly every instance, the proposals that I have written have contained an element of exaggeration – a heightening of the importance of the project I was proposing and of the capacity of my institution to carry it out. My end-of-grant follow-up reports have almost always contained exaggerated claims for the project's success. This inflation was not done consciously. It was a tendency learned early in my career from reading other proposals and participating in committees designing projects to be proposed.

Résumé :
Background: Moral distress is a very common experience in the nursing profession, and it is one of the main reasons for job dissatisfaction, burnout, and quitting among nurses. For instance, morally difficult situations in taking care of child patients who are severely ill may lead to moral distress for nurses. However, most of the studies about moral distress have been conducted on nurses of special wards and adult medical centers with much focus on developed countries. Subsequently, little has been researched on this topic among nurses in other nations such as Iran, and most certainly, there has been hardly any such research involving Iranian pediatric nurses. Aim/objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate moral distress among nurses in selected pediatric hospitals in Tehran, Iran. Research design: This cross-sectional study was conducted on eligible nurses who were selected through proportional stratified sampling and who completed demographic characteristics and the pediatric version of Moral Distress Scale-Revised questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t test, one-way analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation coefficient. Participants and research context: In total, 195 pediatric nurses working at three selected children’s specialized university hospitals in Tehran participated in this study. Ethical considerations: This study was evaluated and approved by the institutional review board of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Findings: The mean and standard deviation of total score of moral distress was 106.41 ± 61.64 within a range of 10–257. Also, the difference between the mean score of moral distress of the group who had not quitted their position and those who have quit in the past was statistically significant (p = 0.043). The situation that was associated with the highest moral distress was “observing medical students performing painful procedures on patients just to gain some skill.” Total score of moral distress was significantly higher among male nurses (p = 0.014), while nurses with a master’s degree experienced just a higher intensity of moral distress compared to those who had a bachelor’s degree (p = 0.006). Conclusion: Since many pediatric nurses clearly face moral distress while taking care of children, it is necessary to consider measures for preventing or decreasing situations that would lead to this distress.

The Ethical Problems associated with the new reproductive technologies are well known: they have been aired in the media since the birth of the first “test tube” baby, Louise Brown, in 1978. The moral status of the human embryo outside the womb (available for manipulation as never before), the “rights of ownership” of human gametes transferred between individuals in fertility treatment, the appropriate use of prenatal and preconceptual diagnostic testing, the truthful disclosure of risks and success rates of fertilization and live births, and the very meaning of infertility remediation in an overpopulated society—these and other issues have been noted and debated worldwide for several decades.

Résumé :
Purpose This study aims to examine the impact of corporate culture, measured by corporate social responsibility (CSR), on the likelihood and severity of corporate fraud. CSR literature indicates that corporate managers are moral actors and are obliged to exercise their discretionary decisions according to their moral standards. Based on the moral development theory, this study argues that higher managers’ ethical values reflected by higher CSR activities are less likely to commit fraud and have lower severity of fraud. Design/methodology/approach This study argues that at the firm level, corporate culture can be measured by firms’ CSR activities. Using probit, match-pair, propensity matching and Heckman regressions on a sample of 152 criminal corporate fraud cases in the USA from the US Department of Justice (DOJ) during 2000 and 2010, this study empirically examines the impact of CSR, CSR strengths and concerns scores on the likelihood and the severity of corporate fraud. Findings Firms with higher CSR and CSR strengths (concerns) scores have lower (higher) likelihood and lower (higher) severity of corporate fraud. This study finds that firms with higher community, employee, environment and product-related CSR have lower likelihood of fraud, and firms with higher diversity, employee, environment and product-related CSR have lower fraud severity. Practical implications Establishing a positive corporate ethical culture is essential to curb the outbreak of corporate fraud that threatens our societal norms. The findings also shed some light for investors, corporate board of directors and regulators to consider CSR as a reflection of top managers’ moral values that is negatively related to the occurrence and severity of corporate fraud. Social implications Strengthening moral values among top executives and employees in corporations by encouraging CSR activities aid our society to alleviate future outbreak of epidemic problem for corporate fraud. Originality/value This study brings a new perspective that there is a relationship between corporate ethical culture within an organization, measured by CSR activities, and corporate fraud based on the cognitive moral development theory in organization.

Résumé :
AbstractThe situationist literature in psychology claims that conduct is not determined by character and reflects the operation of the agent's situation or environment. For instance, due to situational factors, compassionate behavior is much less common than we might have expected from people we believe to be compassionate. This article focuses on whether situationism should revise our beliefs about moral responsibility. It assesses the implications of situationism against the backdrop of a conception of responsibility that is grounded in norms about the fair opportunity to avoid wrongdoing that require that agents to be normatively competent and possess situational control. Despite the low incidence of compassionate behavior revealed in situationist studies, situationism threatens neither situational control nor normative competence. Nonetheless situationism may force revision of our views about responsibility in particular contexts, such as wartime wrongdoing. Whereas a good case can be made that the heat of battle can create situational pressures that significantly impair normative competence and thus sometimes provide a full or partial excuse, there is reason to be skeptical of attempts to generalize this excuse to other contexts of wartime wrongdoing. If so, moral responsibility can take situationism on board without capsizing the boat.

Résumé :
We analyze economic elites’ perceptions and beliefs about meritocracy from a moral economy perspective. A moral economy perspective considers how norms and beliefs structure socioeconomic practices through the constitution and expression of what is considered acceptable, proper, and legitimate. Our study explores how economic elites make sense of the roles of talent and effort in the distribution of resources and how they reconcile the idea of meritocracy within a rigid social order. The site of our study is Chile, a country with fluid mobility between low and middle classes, but with high and persistent disparities and strong barriers to elite positions. We conducted 44 semistructured interviews with shareholders, board members, and high-level executives of large or high-turnover companies in three major Chilean cities. We find that the economic elite strongly support meritocracy but explain access to top positions based on talent rather than effort. The economic elite define talent in terms of business and leadership skills. They attribute upward mobility in the private sector to meritocratic practice. At the same time, they view the public sector as the epitome of nonmeritocratic practices, incompetence, and inefficiency. They profess empathy with the poor, but they reject redistributive policies. The economic elite believe in the primacy of competition in economic life and the necessity of continual economic growth, and thus, they understand meritocracy as both the means to survive in a market economy and a responsible approach to lead national development.

Résumé :
The concept of “mediation” is a complex system based on the establishment of a compromise in a historical and philosophical context. Volunteering is the implementation of voluntary activities in providing assistance to vulnerable groups in a social strata. The article considers the answers to the questions what is the concept of mediation in the traditional Kazakh society and its connection with voluntariness, what is its essence. This article will not only allow us to scientifically study the relationship of conciliation procedures in Kazakh society with mediation, moral aspects, but also assess the essence of this concept from the point of view of voluntariness, spiritual and moral value as an ethical phenomenon. The authors take a step towards scientific theoretical analysis based on the theses of scientific works of a number of researchers who studied the patterns of mediation in the article. The ethno-cultural aspects of mediation are revealed, based on the fact that the activities of the board members who carried out voluntary mediation activities in the Kazakh steppe to reconcile the conflicting parties are really connected with voluntariness. Although the historical and theoretical foundations of conciliation procedures are considered only in the law of customs, at the present stage it is concluded that research is necessary along with voluntary, ethical principles

Targeted killing in the “war on terror” and in war generally is subject to familiar and severe moral constraints. The constraints hold across the board; they don't change when drones are the weapon of choice. But the ease with which drones can be used, the relative absence of military risks and political costs, makes it especially tempting not only to use drones more and more, but also to relax the constraining rules under which they are used. It seems clear that the rules have, in fact, been relaxed in the course of the American experience with drone warfare – by presidential decision and without public debate. This essay is an argument for the opening up of the decision process to democratic scrutiny and in defense of the familiar constraints.

The paper deals with the practices and experiences constraining the lives of rural people in Ireland. It examines the roles of different forms of associations between rural people in the production of poverty using the results of a research project carried out in the village of Ros Muc in Connemara. The paper argues that various links between rural actors define differentiated access to the network resources, which in turn affects poverty and marginalisation. By unfolding multiple connections which create rural problems the article reveals complex and changeable poverty. Starting from the analysis of social stratification systems and exclusionary trends, the paper later examines the locally contested dialectic of polarisation, moral marginalisation and cultural disengagement. The article takes on board the findings from this study to critically re-evaluate certain stereotypes of poverty and to articulate the need for broader understanding of disadvantage.

AbstractHeir to the principles of Krausism and institucionism, the Residence for Young Ladies of Madrid was an institution founded by María de Maeztu in October 1915. It was created within the Board for Advanced Studies and Scientific Research (referred to by its Spanish acronym JAE), whose purpose was to make access to university easier, bring culture closer and provide good intellectual and moral training for women, regardless of their origin or even their social status. Leonese women, despite being from a rural and conservative province, were an important group within the Residence for Young Ladies, not only in number (103 have been recorded) but also because of their academic and professional skills. Among these women, university students of Medicine, Pharmacy, Exact Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Arts, Law or Pedagogy can be found. Some of them were awarded scholarships from the JAE to pursue further education abroad, mainly in France, the United States and Belgium. Nevertheless, other women from León went to the Residence for the purpose of preparing exams to work in the public administration, completing their musical studies or taking general knowledge lessons, as well as attending the Instituto-Escuela in order to receive a certificate of secondary education.

Résumé :
This article examines the political perspective of corporate social responsibility from the standpoint of normative Islam. We argue that large firms within Muslim majority countries have the moral obligation to assist governments in addressing challenges related to sustainable socioeconomic development and in advancing human rights. In substantiating our argument, we draw upon the Islamic business ethics, stakeholder theory, and corporate governance literatures, as well as the concepts of Maqasid al Shariah (the objectives of Islamic law) and fard al ‘ayn (obligation upon all individuals within society) versus fard al kifayah (obligation upon some individuals within society) to introduce a normative model elucidating critical Islamic precepts. Finally, we propose an Islamic “political” corporate governance framework, which democratizes firm decision making by embedding “core” stakeholders, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and Shariah scholars in the corporate board, thereby enhancing the ability of businesses to respond to stakeholder concerns and priorities, while mitigating interstakeholder and intraboard power asymmetries.

Résumé :
Tax compliance is a compliance of taxpayers with the tax law of the country in terms of declaring their income, filing a return and paying any taxes that are due on time. Tax compliance is essential for the government and tax authorities to achieve the revenue collection target as taxes are the main sources of income to the country. The Inland Revenue Board in Malaysia (IRBM) has recorded 17% increase of tax collection in 2021 compared to 2020. In 2021, more than RM140 billion was collected from three million people and more than 400,000 businesses. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play an important role since they contribute a significant source of government’s tax revenue to ensure sustainable economic growth and development. Recognising SMEs played a crucial role in contributing a large portion of income to the government, this study aimed to identify factors motivating tax compliance among SMEs. The attitude of taxpayers towards tax is influenced by the specific knowledge on taxation, in which the taxpayers have a good understanding of the basic tax system and laws. Thus, tax knowledge among SMEs increases tax compliance as they are more responsible to meet their tax duties. This study also found that high tax morale influencing tax compliance of SMEs. They believe that paying taxes is a sense of moral obligation for the benefits of society. Meanwhile, tax penalties have a significant impact on tax compliance by promoting a positive attitude towards the tax regulations system. In other aspects, tax simplicity has reduced the complexity of the tax system and led to increase of the tax compliance among SMEs. The findings have shown possible strategies for tax authorities to achieve higher level of tax compliance among SMEs towards attaining targeted tax collection for the country.

Résumé :
Background: Ethics in nursing care are traditionally discussed in terms of moral norms or principles. When taking an ontological approach to ethics, ethics is about ethos. Ethos involves both an internal and an external side of ethics. Considering ethics and health from an ontological perspective can provide a different understanding of ethics and health in caring and nursing. Aim and research question: The aim of this study is to deepen the ontological understanding of ethics and health in caring and nursing. The research question is as follows: What is the ontology of health and ethics in caring and nursing? Research design: The study follows a hermeneutical design inspired by Gadamer. Participants and research context: essays about ethics and health were gathered from PhD students in nursing and caring sciences. Ethical considerations: The research follows Responsible conduct of research guidelines provided by the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity. Findings: An ethos with the values of freedom and responsibility seem to ontologically be important for ethics and health. These values allow a movement between the internal and the external sides of ethics that is important for health. Discussion: The ethos of freedom and responsibility that is essential for ethics and health can provide the current ethical debate a new starting point that previous research asks for. Conclusion: Ontologically, an ethos of freedom and responsibility is essential for ethics and health in nursing and caring.

Résumé :
In the latter years the main education terms became the point of rather active discussion. And it is natural, because over the last two decades education terminology expanded, a lot of new terms joined education sciences. On the one hand, such changes were caused by rapid education science development, abundant theoretical and empiric researches, on the other hand, after reestablishment of Lithuanian Independence, new possibilities opened to get acquainted with international practice, to adopt it to Lithuanian educational practice. In 2010, in Lithuania various discussions on educology terminology questions were initiated. This year, on February 11, Lithuanian Republic Education board and Vilnius Pedagogical University initiated the meeting of educology scientists on usage of educology terms in educology scientific publications, in pedagogic activity and educational documents. As practice showed, it is very difficult to find common decisions. Ambiguity, abundance of various synonymic terms became prominent in educology; the process of emergence of new terms is practically out of control, chaotic. Quite a big part of new terms are contradictory (e.g, development education, global and/or international education). It becomes unclear, what is the place of the main (axial) terms in the whole education terminology system, how the hierarchy of the whole term system is kept (or is it kept). Without attempting to go into exhaustive educology term analysis, we can give definitions of the main educology terms referring to systemic approach principle (Lamanauskas, 2004). Education – organized, expedient and purposeful life experience (knowledge, abilities and values) acquisition for life (cognition, consideration, acting) Education (enlightenment) - situational person (personality) and society’s orientation in current situation expansion in various aspects. Upbringing – education process when person’s moral is formed through interaction of values and abilities. Training – personality maturity guaranteeing parameters’ comprehensive, constant and systemic expansion and development. Teaching – education process when person’s intellect is formed through the interaction of knowledge and person’s abilities. In fact, there is no absolute agreement among educology specialists regarding the usage of terms. Such an agreement can hardly be reached, because the same terms in different contexts acquire different meanings and can be differently interpreted. Education, first of all, is a complex, diverse phenomenon. On the one hand, by education we seek that a person would acquire knowledge and abilities (intellect formation), on the other hand – could perceive the world of values (moral formation). Education, as a very complex system, features hierarchic structure and functional organisation. Changing easily any term or implementing a new one, we are trying, in fact, to change the system, very often not thinking about consequences. New terms matter cannot be end in itself. Education (enlightenment), obviously is multilevel, hierarchic, complex and developing social system requiring systemic attitude, systemic analysis, systemic research in general – in this case, on the education science terminology aspect. Key words: education terms, usage of terms, education science, definition.

Résumé :
The debates and approval for LGBTQ activities vary across the globe. Apparently, it is appealing to socialists (Asian) than it is for religious and cultural countries (Muslims and most Africa countries). In a global survey conducted in 2021, three percent of respondents from 27 countries out of the 206 sovereign states declared to be homosexual, gay, or lesbian. However, a sociological approach to LGBTQ in the contemporary society with alignment of the foundations of social institutions has created debates. The Kenyan cases where a court ruling to register LGBTQ organizations with the NGO board resulted, an uproar and varied reactions among Kenyans. Similar indications emerged in Uganda when the parliament passed a bill banning LGBTQ activities in the country. Thus, this article looks at the perceived place of LGBTQ in the five (5) foundations of social institutions; family, education, religion, health and economy. The study revealed that the acceptance and embrace of LGBTQ activities based on these foundations is by far gaped. The foundations describe the sociological and moral dispensations guided by what nature dictates which is a contradiction of the beliefs and activities of LGBTQ. We give our thoughts about the LGBTQ based on the findings.

Résumé :
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the authors’ experiences of conducting research with refugees and asylum seekers in Malaysia over multiple research projects in order to identify limitations to current procedures for receiving ethical approval for a study. It argues that the moral complexity of working with marginalized and excluded groups is not reflected in existing approaches. Design/methodology/approach Ensuring that research is ethical is integral to any empirical study, using any research design. Procedures for ensuring ethics have been developed by professional bodies across many academic fields, predominantly drawing on western legal frameworks and conceptions of agency. However, these procedures may not have applicability to certain cultural, social and political settings. The discussion in this paper focuses on devising ethical approaches for research participants from marginalized and excluded communities in diverse parts of the world, including those with no possibility of legal recourse. Findings Problems with the use of established procedures for four aspects of ethical research are identified, namely, access and gatekeepers; consent; reciprocity; and confidentiality. Originality/value The paper develops a framework for continuous ethical reflexivity. It argues that this framework should replace the established procedural approach to ethics, approved by an Institutional Review Board or ethics committee. Instead, the IRB should assign an ethical mentor who is jointly responsible with the researcher for ensuring research ethics through the use of the framework.

Résumé :
The article deals with the psychological aspects of spirituality. The concepts of spiritual intelligence, spiritual capacities, and spiritual personality are analyzed. The study was based on the idea of a psychological model of spiritual capacities proposed by the author. This model includes three components: moral, mental, and transcendent. The moral component was selected to be explored in detail and was empirically studied. The principal constituent of the moral component of spiritual capacities is a spiritual altruistic tendency; its connection with productive life is analyzed in the article. The objective of the study was the investigation of the relationships between spiritual personality, spiritual capacities and productive life activity. The participants were 662 adults (206 males, 456 females): students and full-time employees aged 18–45 years (M = 26.08) from two cities of the Russian Federation (Kostroma and Taganrog). Correlational and comparative analysis was used for data processing. It was found that respondents with higher levels of “spiritual personality” significantly differed, according to the Mann–Whitney U test by a higher productivity of life activity (U = 43028; p < .001) and had higher levels of spiritual capacities — the spiritual altruistic tendency (U = 46328,5; p < .022). The correlational analysis showed that the higher was the level of manifestation of spiritual capacities — the spiritual altruistic tendency, the higher was the productivity of life activity. The results obtained make it possible to note the importance of the construct “spiritual capacities” and the need for its further scientific psychological research, as well as to emphasize the practical significance of spiritual capacities for the prosperous and productive functioning of society.

Résumé :
Electroconvulsive treatment (ECT) is an entrenched mental treatment where seizures are electrically actuated in patients for restorative impacts. ECT can deliver extreme unsettling influences in the cardiovascular framework most generally a transient time of hypertension & changes in the pulse and a stamped increment in cerebral blood stream and intracranial weight. These hemodynamics changes might be adjusted utilizing different sedative medications. This investigation was attempted to think about the impacts of propofol, etomidate and thiopentone sodium utilized as IV sedative operators in changed ECT as respects, acceptance time & nature of sedation, adjustment of hemodynamics, seizure length & recuperation time. After authorization acquired from the moral board of trustees for the investigation, composed assent from the patient & family members was taken. This investigation was led in the division of anesthesiology at Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, which remembered a sum of 90 patients for the 18-60 years age gathering. In our current investigation, we inferred that each of the three instigating operators had sure more than each other when the examination boundaries were individualized. Propofol had the upside of stable hemodynamic boundaries, smooth enlistment & fast recuperation in contrast with etomidate & thiopentone. Nonetheless, it was related with more limited span of seizure. The benefit of thiopentone sodium of having longer seizure length than propofol of having longer seizure span was brought about at the expense of a generally delayed recuperation period. The clear bit of leeway of a more extended seizure length with etomidate could be utilized for better clinical adequacy. Notwithstanding, it was related with myoclonic jerks during the cycle of acceptance. Further examinations ought to be planned to utilize a stage & mix of medications with the goal that the most ideal impacts of each medication can be sensibly utilized.

Résumé :
Purpose: The aim of the study was to examine appraisal support dynamics for protestant clergy and their spouses on marital satisfaction in Dagoretti South Sub-County Nairobi, Kenya. Methodology: This study employed an explanatory sequential mixed method design. The study used a sample size of 273 protestant clergy and their spouses, chosen using a simple random sampling technique for quantitative, and 12 participants who were purposefully selected for qualitative, low and high performance on levels of marital satisfaction. The ENRICH Marital Satisfaction Scale (EMSS) and the Scales of Perceived Social Support were used to collect quantitative data, with the former having a reliability coefficient of 0.834 and the latter of 0.954, respectively. The researcher used both standardized questionnaires and an in-depth interview guide questionnaire to obtain data. Descriptive analysis and thematic analysis were used to examine the data. The data was presented in form of tables. SPSS version 23 for the social sciences was for inferential analysis. Findings: The results of this study showed a small but statistically significant negative correlation between appraisal support dynamics and marital happiness. The dynamics of appraisal support had little effect on marital happiness. Couples whose feedback-giving styles are more combative tend to report lower levels of happiness in their marriages. On the other hand, this could mean that accessing appraisal support is difficult for protestant clerics and their spouses because of their positions in society as religious authorities who are expected to showed highest standards of moral values, which could further strain their relationships. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The study was anchored on The Family Stress Theory which was propounded by McCubbin & Patterson in 1983. The study recommends that the protestant clergy and their spouses set up peer to peer support groups that will enable them to overload their marital challenges. This study recommends that the counselling psychologists board should develop a clergy centered psychotherapy that elevates appraisal support in areas of marital relationship.

Résumé :
The non-philosophical conceptualisation of the self, and I am expanding the category to include the other forms of theoretical-methodological exit from philosophy’s sufficiency as its principle, thus also Marx, psychoanalysis, and linguistics, does not reduce the radical dyad of physicality/automaton to one of its constituents. It is determined by the radical dyad as its identity in the last instance and it is determined by the materiality or the real of the last instance. The real is that of the dyad, of its internal unilaterality and the interstice at the center of it. We have called this reality of selfhood the non-human: the interstice is insurmountable; the physical and the automaton are one under the identity in the last instance but a unification does not take place. It is the physical, the animal and nature, it is materiality of “use value” and the real production that needs to be delivered from exploitation, not the “workers” only, especially because many of the global labor force are bereft of the status (of workers). And the need to do so is not only moral but also political in the sense of political economy: capitalism is based on a flawed phantasm that the universe of pure value is self-sufficient on a sustainable basis, based on an abstracted materiality as endlessly mutable resource. A political economy detached from the material is untenable. Résumé :
For years, commentators have debated how to most appropriately allocate scarce medical resources over large populations. In this paper, I abstract the major rationing schema into three general approaches: rationing by price, quantity, and prioritization. Each has both normative appeal and considerable weakness. After exploring them, I present what some commentators have termed the “moral paradigm” as an alternative to broader philosophies designed to encapsulate the universe of options available to allocators (often termed the market, professional, and political paradigms). While not itself an abstraction of any specific viable rationing scheme, it provides a strong basis for the development of a new scheme that offers considerable moral and political appeal often absent from traditionally employed rationing schema. As I explain, the moral paradigm, in its strong, absolute, and uncompromising version, is economically untenable. This paper articulates a modified version of the moral paradigm that is pluralist in nature rather than absolute. It appeals to the moral, emotional, and irrational sensibilities of each individual person. The moral paradigm, so articulated, can complement any health care delivery system that policy-makers adopt. It functions by granting individuals the ability to appeal to an administrative adjudicatory board designated for this purpose. The adjudicatory board would have the expertise and power to act in response to the complaints of individual aggrieved patients, including those complaints that stem from the moral, religious, ethical, emotional, irrational, or other subjective positions of the patient, and would have plenary power to affirm the denial of access to medical care or to mandate the provision of such care. The board must be designed to facilitate its intended function while creating structural limitations on abuse of power and other excess. I make some specific suggestions on matters of structure and function in the hope of demonstrating both that this adjudicatory model can function and that it can do so immediately, regardless of the underlying health care delivery system or its theoretical underpinnings.

There is no body that has the legal right to exercise agency on behalf of international society (IS), even though the notion of “society” encapsulated in IS is, in principle, close to that conveyed by bodies such as clubs and associations that can be represented by, for example, a board of directors or governing committee. Some have argued that the UN or the Security Council can exercise agency on behalf of IS, but in view of the “underinstitutionalization” of IS in the UN, a more interesting possibility is that groups of states may authorize themselves to act on the behalf of IS as “coalitions of the willing.” However, the contrasting experience of the Gulf War of 1990/91 and the Kosovo campaign of 1999 suggest that the degree of ideological coherence of the coalition in question is an important variable here - in 1999, NATO was able with some plausibility to represent the wider international society because of its commitment to certain core democratic values, while in 1991 the Gulf War coalition could only act conservatively in restoring the status quo because of its diverse nature.

The Russian Federation Ministry of Education and Science provided financial support to various technical universities within the framework of the Federal Targeted Program "Research and Development in Priority Areas of Development of the Scientific and Technical Complex of Russia for 2014-2020". At the same time, the Ministry expected "...identifying the areas and developing engineering solutions aimed at improving the thermodynamic and technical-economic efficiency of distributed and small-scale power facilities".Yet are these expectations always met?Employees of National Research University MPEI – Academician A. V. Klimenko (research supervisor) and D.Eng., Professor V. S. Agababov (lead researcher), under an agreement with the Ministry of Education and Science No. 14.574.21.0017, carried out research on the subject "Identification of promising areas and the development of engineering solutions aimed at improving the thermodynamic and technical-economic efficiency of distributed and small-scale power generation through the use of trigeneration technology".The report on the subject was submitted by the researchers to the Ministry of Education and Science in 2016.However, over the past five years, the researchers have not published a single article based on the results of their research. Repeated appeals of the author of this article to the researchers, the administration of NRU MPEI, the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of Education and Science with a request to make the key provisions of the Report public to the scientific community were left without response. Moreover, an article was published in the Argumenty Nedeli newspaper, No. 40 (734) of 14.10.2020, on the issue ("Who will be responsible for science in MPEI?"), in which the newspaper's editorial office appealed to the Ministry of Education and Science with a request to provide for consideration by the scientific community the text of agreement No. 14.574.21.0017 between the Ministry of Education and Science and NRU MPEI, the text of the Report on the Agreement and the text of the commission's act on the implementation of the agreement. Résumé :
IN SEARCH OF THE SOUL: A Philosophical Essay by John Cottingham. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 2020. 174 pages. Hardcover; $22.95. ISBN: 9780691174426. *There is a longing in the human soul for meaning, fullness, God. That is what philosopher John Cottingham claims in his marvelous philosophical essay, In Search of the Soul. The book historically traces speculation on the soul and its nature from Plato to Descartes to Daniel Dennett, but it is also an impassioned summons to heed the soul's native orientation to the transcendent. It is noteworthy for its philosophical acumen, accessibility, and appreciation of literature's contribution to the conversation. In the opening chapter alone, he alludes to Philip Pullman, Shakespeare, Wordsworth, and T. S. Eliot. For the purposes of this brief review, I shall concentrate on the philosophical heart of the book, chapter three, and end with a summary overview of the last two chapters. *In chapter three, Cottingham confronts two tendencies in contemporary discussion about the soul and its nature. Today, discussion of the soul centers on the nature of consciousness. Consciousness poses a challenge to the impersonal, mechanistic, materialist consensus of science. So, while neurobiology may be adept at telling us what parts of the brain "light up" in experimental settings, there is an enormous explanatory gap between the registration of stimuli in hemispheres of the brain by an fMRI and the first-person experience of qualia such as the taste of cinnamon, the feel of corduroy, or the deep satisfaction in knowing that you are known. How do we integrate the elusive nature of consciousness within the impersonal, mechanistic picture of reality of the sciences? For some, such as Daniel Dennett, we don't, and so we must belittle and discount it. Consciousness is, to use Dennett's analogy, a "user-illusion" like the "click and drag icons" on our computers which bear no relation to its complicated micro-circuitry. The illusion (replete with audio accompaniment) is there only to "humor" our perceptual and cognitive apparatus and pertains to nothing real in the computer. Our "subjective qualitative awareness" is our user-illusion, the click and drag icon that is consciousness. *Cottingham's response to Dennett is an ancient one. Socrates, in the Phaedo, once employed something like it when discussing the moral reasons for which he died. First, Dennett ontologically privileges the micro properties of the computer's circuitry over the macro properties. That is, the printed circuit board is real, the icon is not. But, says Cottingham, this is utterly arbitrary and unjustified. Why not say that both micro and macro properties are equally real? The icon may be dependent upon the micro properties of the computer (like the soul in relation to the body), but that doesn't mean it is ontologically dubious. The rich, meaning-laden world to which the icon appeals is just as real, though it can be accessed and understood only within the realm of the conceptual (p. 79). For Cottingham, Dennett's materialist bias is showing: it is only real if it's caught in my net. Therefore, he rejects the attempt to eliminate consciousness from the status of the real by reducing it to an illusory side-effect of the workings of the brain. *In addition to Dennett's materialist reduction, there is another take on consciousness that Cottingham finds unsatisfactory: panpsychism. Panpsychism is, philosophically, at the opposite pole of the Darwinian account of consciousness in which it comes at the end of the process of evolutionary development (p. 80). Instead, panpsychism claims that consciousness is present, inchoately, from the very beginning in the simplest parts/particles. Following the insights of William James, Cottingham holds that panpsychism is "a kind of category mistake" in which properties more plausibly attributed to wholes (like persons) are implausibly ascribed to parts. In addition, though he may agree with panpsychism that consciousness is, somehow, intrinsic to matter--though a latecomer in evolutionary history--he takes issue with the contention that consciousness is ultimately unintelligible, "a brute fact we cannot deny, but which we cannot ever hope to incorporate into any wider picture of reality" (p. 83). *In a manner similar to consciousness, many philosophers and scientists also regard moral truths as anomalous, out of step with the neutral, quantitative take on the world of the sciences. In his brief survey, moral truths/values are viewed as human projections or groundless "irreducible normative truths" (p. 86). Both of these positions, for Cottingham, fail to do justice to the nature of our experience of the good. *Cottingham maintains that theism is the most congenial framework for consciousness. For not only is it perfectly compatible with the "models and mechanisms of the modern physical sciences" (p. 90), but in this setting consciousness need no longer be dismissed as illusion or anomalous outlier. Theism is congenial to the first-person, qualitative character of consciousness because God is a person and if, as the great theistic traditions affirm, a human being is made in the "image and likeness of God," then it makes sense that matter has the potential to evolve into awareness and self-awareness. Life's evolutionary orientation could be seen as God's way of seeking to be in relation to God's creation. In a Trinitarian context, God is not only a person but a communion of persons rooted in love. So, not only is our personhood grounded, but our social nature is affirmed as an echo of God's interpersonal communion. In addition, our ineradicable sense of normative value loses its anomalous character by finding its natural source and ground in a God of infinite goodness. Finally, theism helps us correct for a tendency in nontheistic conceptions of consciousness to hold that we are the creators of the consciousness we find so captivating, the good we find so compelling. But this, Cottingham maintains, fails to do justice to the profundity of our experience of marveling at the "magical mystery show" of consciousness (p. 92) or the experience of being confronted by what the good demands. So ends my review of chapter three. *In chapter four, Cottingham defends the compatibility of modern psychoanalysis with theism. Here, the depths and opacity of personhood are acknowledged and explored. The dynamics of psychoanalysis are seen to mirror the struggles toward self-knowledge and self-donation found in spiritual direction. The winding corridors and duplicities attendant upon our search for authentic selfhood in psychoanalysis may be a condition of our sinfulness. Finally, chapter five recapitulates the theme adumbrated in chapter one, the natural longing of the human person for God. It is an old theme, but Cottingham has made it new: we were made for God and our hearts are restless until they rest in God. *This is an engaging and inspiring work. Cottingham does not pretend to have all the answers or to have proved what is beyond proof. This is one of the great strengths of his book. He is alert to the questions and to the native orientation of our souls. *Reviewed by Lloyd W. J. Aultman-Moore, Waynesburg University, Waynesburg, PA 15370.

Résumé :
In his “Ninth Annual Report to the Massachusetts Board of Education” (1846), the Secretary of the Board, Horace Mann, discussed the teaching of moral and civic virtues inside the classrooms of American public schools. “The question now arises,” he declared, “and it is a question on which the worth or worthlessness of our free institutions is suspended—whether [our schools] be put in requisition to impart a higher moral tone to the public mind; to enthrone the great ideas of justice, truth, benevolence, and reverence in the breasts of the people.” For Mann, of course, the answer was self-evident: it was the special task of public schooling to carry out “a revolution…down among the primordial elements of human character” itself. “[E]very fibre in the nation,” he declared, “should be strained to the endeavor…. It is the mission of our age to carry this cause one step further… in its progress of development.”

Résumé :
Researchers in the twenty-first century face a set of challenges unknown to researchers a half century ago—the need to justify the moral acceptability of their research methods through formal review processes. However, the role that moral constraints play in the development and demise of scientific theories has largely gone unappreciated. The rise of Institutional Review Boards (IRB) in the 1960s compounded the impact of moral constraints on scientific research and on the theories that develop out of such highly monitored research. To demonstrate the effects of moral constraints on scientific theory and research, this paper offers a history and analysis of the interaction between evolving moral standards and twentieth century emotion theory. Recommendations regarding IRB reform are also reviewed. The paper concludes by arguing that, while appropriate IRB reform is important, it cannot eliminate the need for careful reflection on the broader forces that shape scientific practice and understanding.

Résumé :
Abstract Background: Congenital plasminogen deficiency (PLGD) caused by mutations in the PLG gene is a rare genetic disorder that leads to clinical manifestations due to extravascular fibrinous deposits on mucous membranes with disruption of tissue or organ function (Tefs 2006; Mehta 2008). Prometic has developed an intravenous (IV) plasminogen (PLG) product (Prometic's-PLG) derived from human plasma as replacement therapy for treatment and prevention of extravascular fibrinous (ligneous) lesions in children and adults with PLGD. Aims: To determine whether Prometic's-PLG is safe and effective in pediatric and adult subjects with PLGD over 48 weeks of replacement therapy. Methods: Fifteen pediatric and adult subjects aged 2 to 80 years with PLGD were enrolled in an open-label study to receive multiple IV doses of 6.6 mg/kg Prometic's-PLG for at least 48 weeks. An analysis was performed after 10 subjects completed 48 weeks of treatment. Subjects were dosed every 2, 3, or 4 days based upon a pharmacokinetic (PK) profile to maintain target trough PLG activity levels > 10% (absolute) above baseline values. Extravascular ligneous lesions (visible and non-visible) were assessed at baseline, weeks 4, 8, 12, and every subsequent 12 weeks up to 48 weeks. Safety, tolerability and quality of life were also assessed. Results: Subject baseline characteristics are included in Table 1. Six of 10 subjects had 15 visible lesions at baseline. After 12 weeks, 14 of 15 lesions (93.3%) completely resolved; the remaining lesion shrank to an unmeasurable size. After 48 weeks, all 15 lesions had completely resolved. There were no new lesions or recurrences of previous lesions (Table 2). There were no deaths, serious adverse events (AEs), or AEs resulting in study drug discontinuation. The most frequent AE was nasopharyngitis. Conclusions: Repeated IV doses of 6.6 mg/kg Prometic's-PLG demonstrated excellent efficacy in the resolution of lesions due to PLGD with no recurrences or new lesions while on replacement therapy for 48 weeks, with no safety concerns. Prometic's-PLG represents a pivotal breakthrough in the treatment of this very rare coagulation deficiency and an important therapeutic advance for affected patients who have suffered under the burden of their disease due to lack of an available efficacious therapy. Résumé :
Metal structural plates are extensively used in various engineering structures due to their high strength, high-temperature resistance, toughness, and plasticity. However, they are susceptible to damage from external loads and impacts over time. The current Lamb wave detection methods suffer from dispersion and multimodal effects, leading to ineffective identification of damage information. In this paper, we investigate Lamb wave propagation in steel structure plates with flat-bottomed holes using a sinusoidal modulation five-peak wave signal. Finite element numerical models are developed, and an experimental platform is constructed using steel and aluminum boards. Experimental data is collected using a Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (SLDV, PSV-500, Polytec Inc., Baden-Württemberg, German). The results demonstrate that, under the same frequency, the damage reflection energy for different modes is distinct. By fusing the data from the two modes, more accurate damage imaging results are obtained in the frequency-wavenumber (f-k) domain compared to single-mode imaging. Furthermore, experiments are conducted to locate damage in a steel board with a through hole and an aluminum plate with double flat-bottomed holes, confirming the feasibility of the proposed algorithm in isotropic plates.

Résumé :
The electronic components inside a main battle tank (MBT) are the key components for the tank to exert its combat effectiveness. However, breakdown of the inner electronic components can easily occur inside the MBT due to the strong transient shock and large vibration during artillery fire. As a typical key electronic component inside an MBT, the fault mechanism and fault patterns of the CPU board of the fire control computer (FCC) are discussed through numerical simulation and experimental research. An explicit nonlinear dynamic analysis is performed to study the vibration features and fault mechanism under instantaneous shock load. By using finite element modal analysis, the first six nature frequencies of the CPU board are calculated. Meanwhile, curves of stress–frequency and strain–frequency of the CPU board under different harmonic loads are obtained, which are applied to further identify the peak response of the structure. Validation of the finite element model and simulation results are performed by comparing those obtained from the modal with experiments. Based on the dynamic simulation and experimental analysis, fault patterns of CPU board are discussed, and some optimization suggestions were proposed. The results shown in this work can provide a potential technical basis and reference for the optimization design of the electronic components that are commonly used in the modern weapon equipment and wartime support.

Special moral, regulatory, and scientific questions surround the inclusion of children in health-related research. These questions arise from a fundamental moral tension between the obligation to expose children to research participation to ensure that they share in the benefits that arise from it and the obligation to protect them from the harms associated with their inappropriate involvement in research. This tension is felt in the development of moral and regulatory frameworks for the protection of child research subjects and in the implementation and interpretation of these frameworks by institutional review boards (IRBs).

The Norman Rockwell image of the American physician who fixed the broken arm of a child, treated the father for hypertension, and brought an unborn child into this world is now almost nonexistent. Since the time of the Rockwell portrait, a highly technical medical industry has evolved. Now two-thirds of physicians are board certified in subspecialties, and patients visit an average of 3–4 different physicians per year. Today's physicians see themselves less as “benevolent and wise counselors overseeing the patient's welfare and more as objective scientists applying the latest technical methods to bring about the desired end.” The intimate patient-physician relationship that was once the norm in our society is rapidly disappearing.

Résumé :
The current paper presents an investigation into novel modal testing methods applied to a disk–shaft structure at different rotating speeds in air and water. The structure was excited using three different methods: an instrumented hammer, a piezoelectric PZT patch glued on the disk and a transient ramp-up. The structural response was measured using an accelerometer and strain gauges mounted on board as well as accelerometers and displacement lasers mounted off board. The potential to excite the natural frequencies using each excitation method and to detect natural frequencies with each sensor was analyzed and compared. Numerical structural and acoustic–structural modal and harmonic analyses of the non-rotating disk in air and water were also performed, taking into consideration the PZT patch. The numerical results showed a close agreement with the experimental ones in both air and water. It was found that the rotating speed of the disk modified the detected natural frequencies, depending on the frame of reference of the sensor. Finally, the PZT patch and the transient ramp-up were proven to be reliable methods to excite the natural frequencies of the current test rig and to be potentially applicable in full-scale hydraulic turbines under operating conditions.

Résumé :
This work is devoted to the research of new asymmetry effects in symmetric protective structures with triple modal reservation. We analyzed the structures with different cross-sectional locations of the reference conductor: in the center (unshielded structure), around (shielded structure), at the top and bottom (multilayer printed circuit board), and in the form of side polygons (double-sided printed circuit board). First, a preliminary quasi-static simulation was performed in the range of parameters. It was revealed that in all structures, except for the shielded one (in the form of a cable), the deviations of the output voltage amplitude, bandwidth, and frequency of the first resonance were insignificant, whereas in the shielded structure there were significant deviations in the time and frequency responses. The attenuation of the output voltage in relation to the input for each structure was also estimated. In addition, we performed a parametric optimization of the structures under consideration using a heuristic search, which made it possible to improve their characteristics. Finally, the switching order between the conductors in these structures with the original and optimized parameter sets was investigated in detail. The optimal conductor switching order in the case of a component failure was determined, and the best (according to protective characteristics) parameter configuration for each structure was found.

Résumé :
Object detection is a fundamental computer vision task for many real-world applications. In the maritime environment, this task is challenging due to varying light, view distances, weather conditions, and sea waves. In addition, light reflection, camera motion and illumination changes may cause to false detections. To address this challenge, we present three fusion architectures to fuse two imaging modalities: visible and infrared. These architectures can provide complementary information from two modalities in different levels: pixel-level, feature-level, and decision-level. They employed deep learning for performing fusion and detection. We investigate the performance of the proposed architectures conducting a real marine image dataset, which is captured by color and infrared cameras on-board a vessel in the Finnish archipelago. The cameras are employed for developing autonomous ships, and collect data in a range of operation and climatic conditions. Experiments show that feature-level fusion architecture outperforms the state-of-the-art other fusion level architectures.

Résumé :
The relevance of research. The editor’s paper highlights the key issues of the feature of the journal “Legal Concept” = “Pravovaya Paradigma” under the title “Civilizational transformations in criminal procedural legal approaches”. The relevance of the feature is determined by the civilizational transformations that determine the vector of procedural law development, its methodological and technological approaches. The influence of criminal procedural legal approaches in the process of forming a new state, public and personal consciousness is investigated. The scientific novelty of the project prepared by the editorial board is determined by the fact that in any civilizational transformation, many circumstances should be taken into account to cope with solving not only the problems that have already accumulated, but also to understand the problems that are arising in connection with the introduction of the most complex information and telecommunications technologies, various gadgets and high-tech devices that are changing the daily lifestyle of a person. The criminal procedure sphere of law is no exception, whose methodological and technological approaches could not but undergo serious changes. The role of criminal procedural legal approaches cannot be underestimated, since the regulation of modern technologies in the relevant field of law, the management and control over them to ensure the normal, uninterrupted functioning of the state legal system as a whole depend on them to an equally important extent. This means that the scientific research presented in the heading “The main topic of the issue” is relevant and timely, and the conclusions, suggestions and recommendations formulated based on their results have both scientific and practical significance. The methodological framework for the collective research is made up of the general scientific methods of cognition used in the social sciences in general, including in law. They form a system of general, special and private methods of scientific research. Among the most significant general methods of cognition is the formal-logical method. The special and private methods are presented in the scientific papers of the heading mainly by the methods of consistency, analysis, statistical and comparative law. The results of the study. It is noted that law, along with other social regulators, is a necessary mechanism for implementing the foundations of modern civilization. It is rather difficult to determine the genesis of civilizational transformations in criminal procedural legal approaches, since every century is famous for its socio-economic transformations, which, as well as scientific and technological progress, always have to be taken into account by the legislator and modernize the legal system in a timely manner. In the era of the sixth way of technological development, information society, digitalization of all spheres of life, an instant response from the legislative, executive and judicial authorities is necessary. Otherwise, social development may suffer significant damage, measured not only in economic equivalents, but also in moral and ethical ones. This fact gives special importance to the scientific research presented in the heading “The main topic of the issue”. Conclusions. It is concluded that the authors of the papers presented in the heading “The main topic of the issue” have made a number of recommendations, suggestions and attempts to resolve the existing legal conflicts of substantive and procedural criminal law norms to improve modern legislation in the conditions of civilizational transformations. The study of criminal procedural legal approaches allows us to better understand the trends in the development of Russian and foreign civilizations at the turn of the information age and digital law. It is argued that as the significant results of the project, both theoretical and practical, it is possible to state the increment of knowledge in such branches of modern legal science as criminal law, criminal procedure and criminalistics.
