The process of filmmaking starts with an idea and is brought forth to reality through a collaborative effort. This paper will include the process of producing a film through each step from the conception to completion of my thesis film “Red Bean Monday.” I will thoroughly discuss the writing, producing, cinematography, directing, editing, sound, technology, and workflow. I will also discuss things I have learned as a filmmaker through the successes and failures that I determined based on surveys from audience participation.

Vi har sedan analyserat det empiriska materialet och ställt det mot vår teoretiska referensram och dragit slutsatser därefter.

Desde que foi erguida dentro dâÃgua, na ponta da orla marÃtima, a edificaÃÃo do ALAGOAS IATE CLUBE â o Alagoinha â referenciou de tal forma a junÃÃo das praias da Ponta Verde e da PajuÃara que a presenÃa da sua ruÃna passou a pairar sobre a paisagem urbana de Maceià como um Ãcone cultural e uma verruga indesejada. Unidos pelo tempo, nÃo se pode pensar sobre o antigo clube na cidade sem que os escombros do edifÃcio venham à tona como uma sombra, precisamente impressa sobre os arrecifes que lhe servem de terreno. Esta à sobretudo a viga mais resistente da sua arquitetura â a localizaÃÃo em que foi construÃda. à como se nesta exata coordenada (do mapa, das Ãguas, da cidade) pudesse estar concentrada, sempre atravÃs da degeneraÃÃo, uma narrativa que se apresenta ao pensamento como uma explosÃo de destroÃosâ De inÃcio acompanhada por uma equipe pequena, e, logo depois, sozinha, desde dezembro de 2012 passei a visitar semestralmente as ruÃnas do Alagoinha, a fim de capturar em filme e arquivar os fragmentos de tal explosÃo. Em paralelo, deparei-me com os registros do passado do prÃdio atravÃs do acervo de fotografias e de fitas em VHS e K7 cedido a mim pela FamÃlia Costa, fundadora do clube. A soma do meu arquivo abrange hoje cerca de 40 horas de gravaÃÃes em vÃdeos, 1800 fotografias e 20 horas de ambiÃncias sonoras e conversas gravadas na ruÃna com narradores que emprestaram seus diferentes pontos de vista à minha construÃÃo. MONTAR UMA RUÃNA: CLUBE ALAGOINHA propÃe, portanto, uma investigaÃÃo da poÃtica da montagem que se configura num duplo movimento: por um lado, hà uma exposiÃÃo do jogo de procedimentos na criaÃÃo e manipulaÃÃo desse arquivo na montagem dentro e fora da cÃmera, entre o espaÃo da ruÃna, da mente e da ilha de ediÃÃo; por outro, a operaÃÃo de montagem que aqui se realiza à tambÃm a do despedaÃar da possibilidade de uma narrativa linear do declÃnio do Alagoinha, alvo de ocupaÃÃes transitÃrias e de ameaÃas constantes de desaparecimento, principalmente apÃs o anÃncio da obra do âMarco Referencial do Turismoâ em MaceiÃ. Ao desdobrar a matÃria fragmentada e heterogÃnea desse arquivo precÃrio (e ainda em aberto) numa primeira trama possÃvel, experimento o exercÃcio de montagem de uma dissertaÃÃo-filme (ou seria um filme-dissertaÃÃo?), por meio de imagens fotogrÃficas ou descritas, palavras sonoras, relatos de processo e interlocuÃÃes de diversas naturezas.
From the moment its foundations were settle within the sea so that its facade could rest over the surface at a famous corner by the seafront, ALAGOAS YACHT CLUB (âAlagoinhaâ)âs presence stamped Ponta Verde and PajuÃaraâs beaches encounter in such a remarkable way that, nowadays, its remains still hang over MaceiÃâs urban landscape both as a cultural icon and an undesirable wart. Bound together by the force of time, one cannot think about the city unless the already diluted shape of the ruins rising from the reefs comes to mind. The ancient beach club location is in fact the strongest and toughest beam of this architecture. As if in that exact point of Ocean and geography, and always through a degeneration process, a bigger narrative could be surprisingly agglutinated, erupting as a precise explosion amongst the wreckageâ Formerly with a small team, later by myself, I kept visiting Alagoinhaâs ruins every six months, in order to capture in film the fragments of such eruption. In parallel, I came across the rare photograph and VHS/ K7 tape registers owned by clubâs founders, the Costa family, all of which were personally handed to me. My collection was then extended to more than 40 hours in video footages, 1800 photos, and about 20 hours in audio tapes fully recorded inside the ruins, including a number of ambient sounds plus testimonials by different narrators in a series of conversations with me. The (re)combination of all this material is what gives my own construction its particular form. MOUNTING A RUIN: ALAGOINHA CLUB proposes, therefore, an investigation on the poetics of montage that is performed in a double movement: on the one hand, it is a disclosure of the game proceedings involved in the creation and treatment of that archive inside and outside the camera, through the spaces of the very ruins, the mind, and the editing room/island; on the other, the montage operation itself is also that of the disruption of the possibility to create a linear narrative on the ongoing decline of Alagoinha, while its ruins are being targeted by transitory occupations and, especially after the announcement of a plan to build there a âtouristic milestoneâ, by the imminent threat of disappearance as well. Unfolding the fragmented content of that precarious archive in a prime possible plot, and so connecting photographic, and descriptive, images, sonorous words, process reports, and distinct conversations, I get to experience the assembling of an authentic thesis-film (or would it be a film-thesis?).

Montou est connu comme un dieu guerrier. Cette identification repose sur la documentation du Nouvel Empire. Cette étude porte sur ses aspects après le Nouvel Empire. C’est un Dieu thébain adoré dans quatres villes (Ermant, Tôd, Médamoud, Karnak-Nord). A partir de la XXVe dynastie, ils sont regroupés et forment les Quatres Montou, protection magique de Thèbes. Ils incarnent également les quatre mâles de l’ogdoade. A la fin de l’époque ptolémaïque, Amon s’ajoute aux Quatre Montou et forment un nouveau groupe divin, les Cinq Dieux. Les rapports de Montou et d’Amon sont importants et complexes, il devient une sorte de double d’Amon et participe aux rites de Djêmé. Sur la rive gauche de Louxor, Montou est représenté aux portes des temples, bien qu’il n’ait pas de chapelles ; il devait les visiter lors des processions. Une seule date est connue : le 26 Khoiak. Ces nouveautés théologiques ne sont pas reprises dans ses représentations hors de Thèbes ; Montou apparaît comme un dieu protecteur
Montu is known as war’s god; identification based on documentation of New Kingdom. This study is about Montu’s aspects after New Kingdom. He is especially a Theban god worshiped in four cities (Armant, Tod, Medamud, Karnak-North). From dynasty XXV, the dour gods are regrouped to form Four Montu, magic protection of Thebes? This Four Montu embodies also, the four males of ogdoad. In end of Ptolemaix time, Amun is added to Four Montu to form a new divine group, the Five Gods. Relations between Montu and Amun are important and complex; he becomes a sort of Amun’s double and participates in Djeme’s rites (Medinet Habu). On Louxor’s left bank, he’s represented on doors of these temples, although he has no chapels inside them; he had to visit them during the processions; a single date is well known: 26 Khoiak. These theological novelties are not resumed in representations of this God outside Thebes (Philae, Edfu, Dendara, Esna); he appears as defender’s god

Adrien de Monluc (1571-1646), porteur d'un patronyme fameux, est connu de ses contemporains sous le titre de comte de Cramail. Gascon et gentilhomme, il guerroie lors de ses jeunes années aux côtés des ligueurs dans le Midi toulousain. En 1605, il est nommé gouverneur du très sensible comté de Foix. Il devient Maréchal de camp sous Louis XIII et prend part aux campagnes militaires menées contre le duc de Rohan en Languedoc. Mais sa participation à la Journée des Dupes et ses intrigues contre Richelieu conduisent à son embastillement le 23 octobre 1635. Il ne recouvre la liberté qu'après la mort du cardinal. L'historiographie, en se fondant sur quelques évènements comme une rencontre avec le philosophe Vanini, a longtemps brossé d'Adrien de Montluc le portrait d'un homme sulfureux et d'un libertin. Or cette étude aussi exhaustive que le permet une documentation mobilisant des sources diplomatiques, littéraires, économiques, notariales révèlent le comte de Cramail sous un jour sensiblement différent. Ce Gascon peut compter sur un réseau de fidèles et de fidélités enracinées dans la Chalosse, développés dans le Languedoc et jusqu'au lointain Angoumois où il possède la principauté de Chabanais. Grand noble, Le comte de Cramail a satisfait aux exigences culturelles des aristocrates de son rang. Protecteurs des belles lettres, il exerça une activité de mécène à la cour et en province, notamment à Toulouse où au début du XVIIe siècle, il fonda l'académie des Philarètes. De son engagement dans les troupes ligueuses à son adhésion à la Milice chrétienne créée par le duc de Nevers, et à ses prises de position en faveur de la croisade contre le Turc, Adrien de Montluc fut sa vie durant un catholique militant qui ne pouvait qu'éprouver de la sympathie pour une Espagne drapée dans la défense de la catholicité. Le portrait un brin convenu et hâtivement composé du libertin se brise. Il laisse place à une personnalité fidèle à sa foi, à son roi, à ses amis poètes, à un prince qui conserve cependant un brin de mystère en l'absence de toute représentation figurée connue.

Le relazioni tra Cina e Giappone sono da sempre problematiche e continuano a promuovere sentimenti negativi, in parte a causa delle vertenze cinesi riguardo alle azioni giapponesi durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale e, secondo a quanto riportato, a resoconti storiografici falsificati trovati all’interno dei libri di testo di storia giapponesi. Questo studio utilizzerà un’analisi storica degli eventi che portarono al Massacro di Nanchino del 1937, esaminando il ruolo del Ministero dell’Educazione giapponese (MEXT) nel processo di selezione dei libri di testo usato per scuole primarie e secondarie, molto criticato e contestato, giustapponendo l’Atarashii Rekishi Kyōkasho a libri di testo di storia giapponese attuali. Lo studio prenderà in esame anche le rivelazioni per cui gli editori dei libri di testo, il MEXT, e consigli regolatori furono coinvolti nel manomettere e di conseguenza modificare i contenuti dei libri di testo, facendo in modo che le informazioni svelassero vari livelli di copertura.

Under-representation of female teachers in management positions in high schools This mini-dissertation is a study of under-representation of female teachers in management positions in high schools in Bophuthatswana. The statement of the research problem and the aims and methods of research are discussed in chapter 1 . This includes a discussion of the population used for the empirical research and an outline of the chapter division. In chapter 2, terms such as under-representation and management positions are defined. Literature purports that female teachers are under-represented because they do not apply for promotion posts in high schools. Internal factors that are seen as barriers for female teachers to apply for promotion were examined in this chapter. These factors include, among others, lack of self-confidence, lower self-image, fear of success, lack of aspiration and the cinderella syndrome. The role played by traditional and stereotyped beliefs in female teachers' withdrawal from management activities was also considered. Chapter 3 is devoted to a discussion of external factors that are seen to inhibit female teachers from applying for promotion posts. These factors include filtering techniques, tokenism and marginality, mentoring and role modelling, networking, sponsoring and family constraints. Empirical research conducted is reported in chapter 4. The discussion includes the construction of a questionnaire, the population analysis and the interpretation of the data. Finally, conclusions were drawn with regard to literature, as well as empirical research findings. A number of recommendations are made with regard to the research findings.

Childhood obesity is a major public health concern for Americans. Many school-based health interventions and campaigns have been in place in the elementary school setting to help lower the rates of childhood obesity and to make students aware of their health. This study focuses on the implementation of the Healthy Monday campaign to fourth and fifth grade students in two Kentucky elementary schools. Particularly the focal points of the campaign consist of nutrition and physical activity. The campaign highlights two spin-off campaigns from the Healthy Monday campaign titled the Monday Mile and Meatless Monday. This study looks at the effectiveness of the overall health campaign to the fourth and fifth grade students, their parents, and teachers in the two schools. Pre and post surveys were developed in order to test four components of the health campaign: campaign awareness, attitudes, nutrition knowledge, and behavior change. This study shows that the health campaign increased student’s awareness, nutrition knowledge, and behavior change. Also the parent and teacher population showed significant increase in campaign awareness and behavior change. Overall, the health campaign created awareness among all three populations.

Various aspects of energetics of the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus Montagu, were investigated, including the relationship between ventilation rate and behaviour, the structure of the breath, basal metabolic rate, and the cost of echolocation. An ethogram was defined through observation of a sub-group of seven dolphins, which proved to be representative for dolphins in captivity. Ventilation rates for the behaviours within the ethogram were measured using a stopwatch, and analysis of spoken and filmed commentaries, on the behaviour of 36 dolphins at five study sites. Ventilation rate was found to vary significantly with behaviour, and was used to estimate the relative costs for different behaviours. All the behaviours were assumed to be aerobic as there was no correlation between consecutive apnoeic periods, and there were no "carry-over" effects when dolphins changed behaviour. Swimming at approximately 1.5 m s-1 and 2 m -1s, incurred similar ventilation rates, and presumably costs, to stationary resting. Ventilation rate increased as speed increased, or when the dolphins swam at the surface. Dolphins spent the majority of time for which they were observed in the behaviours which incurred the lowest ventilation rates. Six ventilatory parameters were measured in 29 dolphins. These included expiration and inspiration duration, the time for which the blowhole was open, and the time spent at the surface. Mean breath duration (expiration + inspiration) was 0.860.16 s (n=2762). The duration of both expiration and inspiration could be varied, although inspiration was more flexible than expiration. Expiration time could be increased by reducing inspiration time or by extending the time the blowhole was open. Inspiration time had a significant influence on the time the blowhole was open and the time spent at the surface.

Schröt. (1), Gloeophylaceae Jülich (1), Hymenochaetaceae Imazeki & Toki (14), Schizophylaceae Jülich (1), Schizoporaceae Quél. (2), Ganodermataceae Donk. (3), Meripilaceae Jülich (5), Meruliaceae P. Karst (3), Polyporaceae Fr.ex Corda (14) e Stecherinaceae Parmasto (1), pertencentes a 4 ordens (Dacrymycetales, Gloeophyllalles, Hymenochaetales e Polyporales) e a 2 classes (Dacrymycetes e Agaricomycetes). Uma espécie, Phellinus garuhapensis Wright & Blumenf foi citada pela primeira vez para o Brasil. Por outro lado, Dacryopinax elegans (Berk. & Curtis) Martin, Hymenochaete rubiginosa (Dick.:Fr) Lév., Inonotus rickii (Pat.) Reid, Phellinus rhytiphloeus (Mont.) Ryvarden, Phylloporia pectinata (Klotzsch) Ryvarden, Echinoporia aculeifera (Berk. & M.A. Curtis) Ryvarden, Oxyporus obducens (Pers.) Donk, Amauroderma sprucei (Pat.) Torrend e Pseudofavolus miquelii (Mont.) Pat. são espécies citadas pela primeira vez para o Estado de Santa Catarina. Todas as espécies foram novos registros para Mondaí. Das 45 espécies, todas são causadoras de podridão branca, com exceção de Stiptophyllum erubescens (Berk.) Ryvarden.

These products could stimulate economic growth, because it would provide the means for integrated regional tourism planning and improved marketing strategies. An integrated approach was adopted, implying that environmental, economic and entrepreneurial components were considered in the research. The environmental component refers to the identification and spatial location of existing and potential tourism resources. The economic component involves the selection and combination of resources for the construction of specific tourism packages. The entrepreneurial component refers to consideration of the opinions of the local community. The gathering of environmental data involved the identification of potential tourism resources in rural mountainous regions. Economic data was collected through a questionnaire survey among tour operators, tour brokers and marketers to determine which resources should be grouped together to create marketable tourism products. Data selection on entrepreneurial matters involved a survey among farm owners to determine their perceptions with regards to agri-tourism. Analysis of the data encompassed the creation of a spatial data base by using the raster capabilities of Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Each thematic layer in the data base represented the approximate location of a specific tourism resource in the Montagu region. Values were then allocated to different layers according to the importance of each resource within a specific tourism package (average rating as determined by tour operators, brokers and marketers). This enabled the creation of a map for each type of tourism package, as well as a regional map showing the spatial location and concentration of highly rated tourism resources. It was found that, by following this process, the spatial representation of resource preferences for specific packages did not reveal as much variability as would be expected. This was due to the tendency that certain resources were consistently rated highly important for inclusion, notwithstanding the type of package. It was also due to the fact that a number of resources, irrespective of its rating, sometimes occurred in areas with close proximity. However, these maps still provided a good spatial representation of important resources, making it useful for the production of marketing brochures on specific packages. The regional map is useful for tourism planning and marketing in the region as a whole. It gives a spatial interpretation of the geographical concentration of important tourism resource areas in the region. It also facilitates the identification of specific areas where highly rated tourism resources occur, but where tourism has not yet been developed to its full potential. The collection and analysis of environmental, economic and entrepreneurial data made it possible to determine which resources are required to construct marketable tourism products. Ultimately, important tourism resource areas in a specific rural mountainous region were identified through a scientific process of quantification and map production.

Die ekonomiese komponent behels die seleksie en kombinering van hulpbronne vir die konstruksie van spesifieke toerismepakkette. Purpose/Aim: The purpose of this essay is to examine from the customers’ perspective how the Swedish jeans-brand Cheap Monday in just three years time could become such a prominent brand on the Swedish market. An additional purpose is to examine whether there is some kind of brand community connected to the brand or not.

Material/Method: The main method used in this essay has been qualitative interviews with ten consumers of the brand. The answers from these interviews has then been analysed using two different theories, Keller’s Customer Based Brand Equity and Muniz and O’Guinnn’s Brand Community.

Main results: The main results of this essay is that Cheap Monday is a brand that has become successful due to people’s perception of who the users of the brand are. The consumers has already from the start gotten a good impression of the brand, since they’ve seen people who they liked, and people who they thought were cool and well dressed wearing Cheap Monday clothing. This is linked to the fact that Cheap Monday costs so much less than their competitors, since the “cool people” that use Cheap Monday clothing makes the low price acceptable and a good thing from the customers perspective, instead of it being a indicator that the brand is unfashionable and no good. It has also been proved that there is somewhat of a brand community connected to the brand, even though the respondents in this essay did not feel connected to this community. On the other hand, almost all of the respondents did think that other people who wear Cheap Monday in some way felt some kind of connection to each other, and most of them a reed on that the brand on its own more or less has originated a new style.

The relationship between American evangelicalism and contemporary society is a complex one. By looking at evangelical attitudes toward work, this study aspires to at least begin untangling some of this convoluted relationship. Drawing upon history, theology, and sociology, especially ethnographic methods and interviews, this study argues that when American evangelicals think about engaging their workplaces evangelism takes center stage. While, at a glance, this gospel and the effort to share it may seem at odds with contemporary sensibilities, a closer examination reveals certain concessions to culture among the evangelicals studied. More specifically, evangelical thoughts concerning work reveal that two central features of the gospel being shared, namely, sin and redemption, appear to be morphing in ways more congruent with contemporary culture. The evangelical relationship with their surrounding world reveals a tension between cultural distance and distinction, on the one hand, and cultural nearness or congruence, on the other. This tension does not mean that evangelicalism is necessarily on track to fail, as secularization proponents might argue. On the contrary, American evangelicalism, it will be suggested, actually finds a degree of sustainability in the world thanks to this tension. Moreover, some of this accommodation to culture accentuates important features indigenous to the evangelical tradition. Evangelical attitudes toward work, then, point to a complex and surprising relationship between evangelicalism and contemporary society.

The main focus of this essay is religious women living in cloisters trying to identify the reasons why they have chosen this type of life. Based on the premises that these women freely decide to live in cloisters, a deep analysis of the social context and the role they play in this context is done. Through these women s lives we can observe certain elements that may indicate the reasons for their choices. The research work was developed in Ordem das Carmelitas Descalças monastery in São Paulo s countryside aiming at finding records about the essay s subject. Through the life report of five lady monks plus a questionnaire focusing on indications of the social-economic level of the monastery population it was possible to better understand the life style of the monastery. The results seem to indicate important reasons related to their family biodata, as well as a possible lack of life perspectives of these women as fundamental elements of their choices. Besides that the essay leads to the need of further investigation focusing on different aspects of life in cloisters and its relationship with society
O presente estudo aborda a vida religiosa feminina em clausura no Brasil e procura identificar elementos que motivam, ainda hoje, mulheres a escolher esse estilo de vida. Partindo do princípio que essas mulheres realizam livremente a opção de viver em clausura, analisa-se o contexto social atual onde as mesmas encontram-se inseridas, bem como os papéis e a identidade que lhe são atribuídos. Através da trajetória de vida dessas mulheres, observa-se alguns elementos que podem ser indicativos das motivações nessa escolha. Com o intuito de obter dados sobre a temática, o trabalho empírico foi desenvolvido junto a um mosteiro de monjas da Ordem das Carmelitas Descalças, do interior do estado de São Paulo. Através da obtenção do relato da história de vida de cinco monjas e ainda da aplicação de questionário estruturado para a indicação do nível sócio-econômico da população do mosteiro, foi possível conhecer um pouco melhor o estilo de vida no convento. Os resultados parecem indicar a significativa influência de fatores biográficos e da estrutura familiar, bem como uma possível ausência de perspectiva na vida dessas mulheres como elementos definidores em suas escolhas. Além disso, o estudo aponta para a necessidade de novas investigações que abordem os diferentes aspectos da vida em clausura e a relação dessas mulheres com a sociedade

Som en följd av globaliseringen, har antalet aktörer inom den textila sektorn ökat drastiskt. På så vis har konkurrensen mellan företag hårdnat och varumärket har utvecklats till ett viktigt konkurrensmedel. Nyetablerade företag har numera svårt att skapa en långvarig position på marknaden. Med detta som grund utvecklades uppsatsens syfte att studera hur nyetablerade företag arbetar för att bygga ett starkt varumärke och en varumärkesidentitet. Studien har utgått från en kvalitativ metod där två fallföretag studerats. För att utvinna relevant information har semistrukturerade intervjuer genomförts.I den teoretiska referensramen beskrivs varumärkesplattformen av Frans Melin samt David Aakers modell för varumärkesidentitetens byggstenar. Dessutom behandlas Aakers fyra uppställda identitetsfällor. Våra fallföretag, Sail Racing och Cheap Monday, är båda nyetablerade på marknaden, därav lämpar de sig bra för vår studie. Intervjuer med fallföretagen har sammanställts i det empiriska kapitlet, för att tillsammans med teorin ligga till grund för analysen.I analysen jämförs företagens arbetssätt med teorins lagar och samband utvinns, det visade sig att Sail Racing följer många av våra behandlade teorier till punkt och pricka. Cheap Monday, däremot, går emot teorierna och bygger sitt varumärke fritt från lagar. Avslutningsvis mynnar uppsatsen ut i ett antal slutsatser som grundats i uppsatta frågeställningar. Sammantaget skiljer sig företagens syn på varumärket åt, då Sail Racing arbetar aktivt med sin identitet medan Cheap Monday har en mindre fokuserad syn på sina marknadsaktiviteter.

Istraživanja u okviru doktorske disertacije usmerena su ka razvojumetode za projektovanje i optimizaciju sistema za montažu zasnovanihna lean konceptu. Analizirani su postojeći instrumenti lean-a i posebnoje istražen njihov uticaj na razvoj sistema za montažu i analizuključnih parametara sistema. Na osnovu prethodnog istraživanja,izvršena je selekcija instrumenata lean koncepta koji suimplementirani u metodu za projektovanje i optimizaciju sistema zamontažu. Verifikacija predložene metode realizovana je na studijislučaja optimizacije postojećeg sistema za montažu cirkulacionihpumpi. Osim navedenog, izvršeno je i projektovanje potpuno novogsistema za montažu cirkulacionih pumpi.
Research in this PhD thesis is focused on development of method foroptimization and design of assembly systems based on lean concept. Existinginstruments of lean are analysed especially their impact on development ofassembly system and key parameters analysis. Based on previous research aselection of lean instruments was made and they were implemented in methodfor optimization and design of assembly sustems. Verification of proposedmethod was realized on case study where existing assembly system wasoptimized. In adition to the above completely new assembly system wasdesigned using proposed method.

A través del archivo del monasterio alicantino de canónigas de San Agustín, conocidas popularmente como “Monjas de la Sangre”, y el trabajo de catalogación y análisis realizado sobre su fondo moderno, desarrollado ampliamente en el Anexo, la presente tesis doctoral permite valorar el alcance de un patrimonio documental –hasta la fecha inédito– y estudiar la historia de esta comunidad, que estará inevitablemente unida al devenir histórico de la ciudad. Ambos propósitos se amplían, gracias a la labor de búsqueda de documentación relacionada con este cenobio y sus moradoras en un amplio conjunto de archivos. A fin de confeccionar un discurso transformador e integrador, esta investigación apuesta por una renovación metodológica, una “nueva mirada”, desde la práctica microhistórica y la perspectiva de la historia de las mujeres, lo que ha permitido una revisión crítica de las fuentes tradicionalmente empleadas, una relectura del relato a través de la introducción de nuevas categorías conceptuales y la incorporación de nueva documentación que, durante mucho tiempo, había pasado desapercibida para el análisis de la religiosidad de este período. El primero de los capítulos está dedicado a descubrir los orígenes de la orden canonical mediante la propuesta de un “recorrido espiritual” (zona norte y arco mediterráneo) para conocer cómo se gestaron los primeros espacios que acogieron la experiencia de comunidades de canónigas de San Agustín, a partir de beaterios y grupos de donadas. Algunos de estos centros actuaron como garantes para impulsar otras fundaciones, siendo las propias monjas de aquellos conventos ya consolidados las encargadas de establecer otros nuevos, como así ocurrió en el caso valenciano, origen directo del monasterio de la Sangre de Alicante. Indagar sobre estos orígenes compartidos significó poder contextualizar el nacimiento del cenobio alicantino como elemento continuador, por un lado, de una larga trayectoria fundacional en la zona este peninsular y, por otro, de un tipo de experiencia representada por colectivos de mujeres con una voluntad espiritual común que se materializaría en un tipo concreto de espacio monástico. La aplicación de la práctica microhistórica en el ámbito local, a partir de una serie de interrogantes iniciales, ha sido empleada, en el segundo de los capítulos, para recuperar el relato de la fundación del monasterio de la Sangre, analizar su establecimiento, a través de la revisión de los distintos elementos –materiales y espirituales– que confluyeron en dicho proceso en los albores del Seiscientos, para explicar cuál fue el contexto religioso, social, político y económico en el que surgió el primer monasterio femenino en el núcleo urbano alicantino desde una perspectiva multifocal, con especial atención a las voces de mujeres como parte activa y central del episodio fundacional, resaltando que la experiencia histórica es sexuada, social y plural. Otra de las apuestas metodológicas planteadas ha consistido en aplicar los presupuestos de la historia de las mujeres y feminista al espacio claustral, resultando una práctica muy enriquecedora como herramienta de análisis crítico capaz de matizar tópicos y derribar estereotipos añejos que sobre las monjas se habían ido vertiendo por parte de determinadas posiciones historiográficas. Así, estudiar este lugar de espiritualidad, desde esta perspectiva, ha permitido, en el tercer capítulo, vislumbrar un microcosmos que, en algunos aspectos, era un fiel reflejo de la sociedad del momento con la que compite y comparte motivaciones o conflictos. De ahí que, de esta forma, los muros monacales se intuyen más permeables de lo que, en un principio, pudiera parecer. Porque, al igual que ocurría en el exterior, el convento se descubre como un todo que se perfila mucho más complejo y diverso y que encierra multitud de matices, caracterizado por la pluralidad de intereses y experiencias. Uno de los significados más sugerentes que ha proporcionado la perspectiva de género aplicada al entorno claustral, ha sido poder entender éste como un espacio plural donde confluyen los elementos necesarios para hablar de una “sociedad femenina” e indagar acerca de una conciencia de grupo. Por ello, estudiar la compleja experiencia colectiva de este grupo ha implicado necesariamente analizar y entender los mecanismos de subalternidad, pero también sus estrategias y tácticas de resistencia e insubordinación femenina. En este sentido, el estudio crítico de las visitas “ad Limina” que realizaban periódicamente los obispos ha resultado una herramienta muy útil que ha permitido descubrir algunas realidades que se vivían dentro y fuera de los muros conventuales alicantinos. De esta forma, se ha podido perfilar un contexto religioso y sociocultural para el Seiscientos alicantino, en el que se ha comprobado que las líneas que separaban lo ortodoxo de lo heterodoxo eran flexibles y algo imprecisas y donde los contornos entre el mundo material y espiritual se desdibujaban formando un mundo variable y vibrante, tanto fuera como dentro del claustro. Además, estos informes episcopales, junto a otras fuentes complementarias también evidencian que el colectivo que, durante la Modernidad, compartió espacio en el monasterio de la Sangre, estuvo formado por educandas, novicias y canónigas, estableciendo un conjunto amplio, diverso y plural. Esta diversidad de situaciones confirmaron que los intereses del grupo, a veces, confluirán y otras tantas, tropezarán, pero, sobre todo, han permitido descubrir experiencias históricas únicas, a través de sus resistencias, transgresiones devociones, en un contexto común y compartido con las gentes de la ciudad en la que vivieron. En este sentido, las fuentes devuelven una imagen de los muros conventuales bastante permeables ante sucesos de diversa índole. Así, a través de la comparación de fenómenos como el enseñoreo o las devociones profanas se ha podido confirmar que sus experiencias estarían condicionadas por aquello que acontecía a su alrededor, que los acontecimientos que marcaron el ritmo histórico de la ciudad, también influyeron en la vida de esta comunidad, en su experiencia colectiva y en sus particulares recuerdos, una influencia recíproca que siempre actuó en dos direcciones. También, a partir del marco epistemológico proyectado para el estudio de esta comunidad, se ha podido argumentar que las moradoras del monasterio de la Sangre, como colectivo femenino y como monjas, lucharon por mantener una determinada autonomía, pero ésta siempre estaría condicionada por su “relación con”, en un espacio limitado y regulado. De ahí la importancia que he dado a la hora de analizar ámbitos tan fundamentales como la familia, la sociedad, la economía o la moral religiosa que condicionaría sus existencias. Entendida la comunidad de canónigas como una auténtica familia, con las implicaciones que ello supone, muchas de ellas ya señaladas, resultaba un ejercicio obligado aplicar el concepto de estrategia al espacio conventual, un análisis que se aborda en el cuarto capítulo. Los distintos episodios protagonizados por las canónigas y analizados en el desarrollo de la Modernidad, comprueban una memoria colectiva y una comunidad que luchaba por sus intereses, siendo capaces de crear un espacio propio y familiar para sí mismas, desarrollando mecanismos de resistencia o estrategias de poder que les permitieran enfrentarse a quienes ponían freno a sus planes. Un desarrollo histórico que, a su vez, ha facilitado la revisión de una parte de la trayectoria de los jesuitas en Alicante, a través de nuevos interrogantes, a fin de desentrañar las condiciones de su establecimiento, así como algunas de las singularidades, hasta la fecha poco o nada tratadas, del proyecto de construcción de su colegio-residencia en la ciudad. Por otro lado, las rivalidades, luchas y fricciones que también se dieron entre las propias religiosas, evidencian la defensa de determinados intereses contrapuestos, en un contexto donde los deseos y ansias de protagonismo espiritual y prestigio, descubren un mundo de anhelos, recelos, inseguridades, vanidades, amores y odios. Las estrategias que usaron las canónigas para gestionar sus recuerdos fueron muchas y variadas a lo largo del tiempo, incluyendo una rica tradición oral que, aunque se adivina porque, entre otras cosas, continúa vigente, es difícil documentar a día de hoy. Sin embargo, sí se han podido distinguir dos espacios que sirvieron para perpetuar esa memoria femenina de la comunidad y su pasado familiar y colectivo: a través de una vinculación a mujeres con fama de santidad y con la consolidación de enérgicos linajes y redes conventuales que, a la manera de las oligarquías locales alicantinas, se fue tejiendo a través de la perpetuación de determinados apellidos, formando auténticos linajes monacales y redes familiares que perduraron durante siglos. Si bien es cierto, entonces, que siempre habrá un nuevo hueco por donde poder asomarse y atisbar nuevos retos a ese otro lado del espejo, cuestionando paradigmas, esbozando preguntas y revisando conceptos, como motor que anime a seguir avanzando por este camino ahora emprendido.

One of the fundamental concepts of ordinary category theory is that of an adjunction. There are analogous notions in 2-category theory one of which is the "soft adjunction" of this thesis. In order to construct examples which exhibit the full generality of this phenomena two constructions for modifying soft adjunctions are described: an "attaching procedure" and a "lifting procedure". These two procedures are shown to be inverses of each other in an suitable sense. A special type of "commutative monad" structure on an object of a 2-category is described and it is shown that this structure can be modelled by the category of finite ordinals and all functions in the same way that the ordinary monad structure can be modelled by the category of finite ordinals and non-decreasing functions. By a standard argument for such a situation where there are 2-category objects with structure a certain "strict" adjunction" is obtained; that is, an adjunction which is essentially the same as an adjunction in ordinary category theory. Starting with a slightly extended version of this strict adjunction examples of soft adjunctions are obtained by means of the attaching and lifting procedures. The relationship between the the various soft adjunctions which arise is investigated.

The English country house has captured people’s interest and imagination for centuries, and has been the subject of many popular and academic studies. However, due to a tendency to focus upon the art and architecture of such properties, how families actually lived in and used these great houses has often been obscured and underexplored. The eighteenth-century Montagu family will be used as a case study through which to explore a number of key themes associated with the social, rather than architectural side of the country house. Their country seat of Boughton House, Northamptonshire will be considered as part of their wider network of urban, suburban and country estates, which increased throughout the century through marriages and inheritance patterns, in order to explore the position of the country house in connection to other aristocratic properties. This thesis will use the Montagu family to examine how aristocratic families used, managed and moved between a large network of estates. It will highlight the importance of inheritance and legal terminology in giving elite women agency, power and influence within households, within their marriages and over their own finances. It will explore the position that Boughton occupied within their network in relation to other properties, looking at what criteria three generations of the family prioritised when moving between houses. In particular, it will show that not all country properties were at the height of their popularity in the eighteenth century, with some, like Boughton, being neglected by owners and left to fall into decline.

Resumo: A presente pesquisa buscou compreender como se constrói e como se expressa a religiosidade de um grupo de monjas paulistas da Ordem de Santa Clara de Assis. Em outras palavras, a investigação procurou refletir sobre as mudanças e as permanências que ocorrem nessa realidade específica, analisando as constantes (re)significações que as irmãs realizam sobre sua própria situação. Para tanto, foi necessário contextualizar as origens do monaquismo, da clausura religiosa e sua expansão no Ocidente, enfatizando a influência dos preceitos de Francisco de Assis sobre a fundadora da Ordem, Clara de Assis, no século XIII. Também foi importante fazer um levantamento historiográfico do desenvolvimento da vida religiosa feminina no Brasil até os dias contemporâneos, devido às transformações que vêm ocorrendo nos institutos de vida consagrada e afetam, também, a religiosidade clariana. Fez-se necessário pensar a trajetória das mulheres que compartilham desses ideais monásticos, compreendendo as motivações para o ingresso e permanência na vida religiosa, analisando seu cotidiano no claustro e refletindo sobre as relações dentro do mosteiro e além dele, isto é, com a hierarquia católica e a sociedade laica. A partir do trabalho etnográfico no mosteiro paulista, foi possível constatar que as religiosas se adaptaram a uma realidade capitalista e globalizada, conservando os preceitos de sua fundadora. Abstract: This research sought to understand how is built and expressed the religiosity of a group of nuns from São Paulo adepts to the Order of St. Clare of Assisi. In other words, the research sought to reflect on the changes and the continuities that occur in that particular reality, analyzing the constant (new) meanings that the sisters carry on their own situation. Therefore, it was necessary to contextualize the origins of monasticism, the cloistered religious and its expansion in the West, emphasizing the influence of the precepts of Francis of Assisi on the Order's founder, Clare of Assisi, in the thirteenth century. It was also important to make a historiographical survey of the development of Brazilian female religious life to contemporary days, due to the transformations taking place in institutes of consecrated life which affect also the Clarian religiosity. It was necessary to think about the trajectory of women who share these monastic ideals, understanding the motivations to enter and remain in the religious life, analyzing their daily life in the cloister and reflecting on the relationships within the monastery and beyond, that is, with the hierarchy Catholic and secular society. From the ethnographic work in São Paulo monastery was established that the religious have adapted to a capitalist and globalized reality, keeping the precepts of its founder. The practice of contemplative prayer, poverty and remained cloistered parts inherent to Clarian vocation. The study of this religion enabled the understanding of the senses and meanings attributed to the contemplative and it allowed knowing the place of female monastic life in contemporary days.

Ce travail de thèse étudie le recueil des Lettres turques écrit par Lady Mary Wortley Montagu pour relater son voyage en Orient d’août 1716 à octobre 1718. Au croisement du journal, de la lettre et du récit de voyage, ces cinquante-deux missives, publiées pour la première fois en 1763 un an après sa mort, servent un propos protoféministe qui remet en question la place de la femme en Occident au dix-huitième siècle. La représentation de l’Empire ottoman et de sa culture permet une révision de l’Europe et l’écriture de l’Autre permet également d’écrire sur soi. Ainsi, le récit de voyage apporte un éclairage sur l’identité de l’auteur, mue par un perpétuel désir de progrès, lui permet d’accéder à l’écriture et d’être considérée comme la première voyageuse anglaise en Orient aujourd’hui
This dissertation focuses on Lady Mary Wortley Montagu’s Turkish Embassy Letters written during her travels to the Ottoman Empire from August 1716 to October 1718 and published for the first time in 1763, one year after she died. These fifty-two letters delivered at the crossroads between diary, letter-writing and travel writing, aim at developing a proto-feminist agenda questioning women’s condition in eighteenth-century Europe. The representation of the Ottoman Empire and its culture enables the author to write about Europe and about herself. The travel narrative sheds light on Lady Mary’s identity as she was motivated by an endless desire for progress. It gave her access to authorship in the eighteenth-century and is the reason why she is nowadays considered as the first English traveller in the East

Women Poets and Place in Eighteenth-Century Poetry considers how four women poets of the long eighteenth century--Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Mary Leapor, Anna Letitia Barbauld, and Mary Robinson--construct various places in their poetry, whether the London social milieu or provincial England. I argue that the act of place making, or investing a location with meaning, through poetry is also a way of writing a place for themselves in the literary public sphere and in literary history. Despite the fact that more women wrote poetry than in any other genre in the period, women poets remain a relatively understudied area in eighteenth-century scholarship. My research is informed by place theory as defined by the fields of Human Geography and Ecocriticism; I consider how the poem reproduces material space and the nonhuman environment, as well as how place effectively shapes the individual. These four poets represent the gamut of career choices in this era, participating in manuscript and print culture, writing for hire and for leisure, publishing by subscription and through metropolitan booksellers. Each of these textual spaces serves as an illustration of how the poet's place, both geographically and socially speaking, influences the medium of circulation for the poetic text and the authorial persona she constructs in the process. By charting how each of these four poets approaches place--whether as the subject of their poetry or the poetic space itself--I argue that they offer us a way to destabilize and diversify the literary landscape of eighteenth-century poetry.

The thesis examines the use or the concept of power in cultural studies, offering a revisionist perspective on the history or this use. The dominant approach to questions or power in the field, it is argued, is a 'rationalist' one: the various phenomena comprehended under the concept are conceived ultimately as instances or the one phenomenon. This approach implies that positions in relation to power share a common referent allowing them to be assessed according to general criteria of 'correctness' or theoretical adequacy. It also allows developments in debates around power to be represented in terms or a narrative or enlightenment in which the 'truth' or power is progressively revealed. As an alternative to this, the thesis develops an 'empiricist' perspective on questions or power. From this perspective, the various phenomena comprehended under the concept are, in fact, distinct. Generalised uses or the singular 'power' do not share a common referent but are imaginative constructions gaining their sense from the particular contexts in which they are used. They cannot be assessed according to general criteria of theoretical adequacy, but only in terms of qualities of response to historical circumstances. The perspective is used to throw sceptical light on progressivist accounts of cultural studies as having discovered a phenomenon (power) which had not previously been recognised. It is demonstrated that the field has a history which precedes the introduction of generalised references to power. It is further argued that generalised references, when they were introduced, did not identify unrecognised phenomena but merely addressed them in a different way. The conditions for this intellectual shirt are traced to the historical circumstances of the Cold War, particularly 10 a rapid and massive expansion of tertiary education, government programs and media forms. A major sub-theme of the thesis is developed around the 'englishness' of cultural studies, where 'englishness' is used in an abstract sense to refer to a certain political response (exemplified by England as an actual polity) to the possibilities of modernity. This response is defined by a tendency to maintain a ‘pre-modern’ sense of powers as particular and a corresponding resistance to generalised references to power in the singular. It is pointed out that the tension between the tendency and European theoretical imports was very sharply articulated in the early formation of cultural studies. It is further argued that it has never entirely disappeared and has continues, at some level, to define the field. The significance of this is that cultural studies offers an intellectual resource for thinking about questions of power which is distinct from the European theoretical positions which it nonetheless cites. In the final chapters of the thesis, attention is given to the possibility of making this resource more visible in its own terms as a way of broadening options for the field in responding to changed conditions for intellectual work post-Cold War.
