Résumé :
The appropriate timing of flowering is crucial for the reproductive success of plants. Hence, intricate genetic networks integrate various environmental and endogenous cues such as temperature or hormonal statues. These signals integrate into a network of floral pathway integrator genes. At a quantitative level, it is currently unclear how the impact of genetic variation in signaling pathways on flowering time is mediated by floral pathway integrator genes. Here, using datasets available from literature, we connect Arabidopsis thaliana flowering time in genetic backgrounds varying in upstream signalling components with the expression levels of floral pathway integrator genes in these genetic backgrounds. Our modelling results indicate that flowering time depends in a quite linear way on expression levels of floral pathway integrator genes. This gradual, proportional response of flowering time to upstream changes enables a gradual adaptation to changing environmental factors such as temperature and light.

The paper deals with the modelling of globalization and integration processes which fundamentally influence enterprise functioning, subject and business forms in both the internal and external trade. Final output is the result of internationally coordinated production in many sectors. The impact of this process is that costs of inputs are minimized and intermediate products are made in different countries. As capital becomes more mobile and technology facilitates international communication, national borders become more permeable to economic activity. Economic reality that is the aim of this modelling is changing and due to this it is necessary to adjust modelling techniques analysed in this paper.

Résumé :
Context. The modelling of stationary galactic stellar populations can be performed using distribution functions. Aims. This paper aims to write explicit integrals of motion and distribution functions. Methods. We propose an analytic formulation of the integrals of motion with an explicit dependence on potential. This formulation applies to potentials with rotational symmetry or triaxial symmetry. It is exact for Stäckel potentials and approximate for other potentials. Results. Modelling a stationary stellar population using these integrals of motion allows the force field to be found with satisfactory accuracy. On the other hand, the mass density distribution that generates the force field and the gravitational potential is recovered with less accuracy due to lower precision in modelling box-type orbits.

In this letter we show how to use a new form of integration, called dynamical integration, that utilizes the dynamics of a system defined by an ODE to construct a map that is in effect a one-step integrator. This method contrasts sharply with classical numerical methods that utilize polynomial or rational function approximations to construct integrators. The advantages of this integrator is that it uses only one step while preserving important dynamical properties of the solution of the ODE: First, if the ODE is conservative, then the one-step integrator is measure preserving. This is significant for a system having a highly nonlinear component. Second, the one-step integrator is actually a one-parameter family of one-step maps and is derived from a continuous transformation group as is the set of solutions of the ODE. If each element of the continuous transformation group of the ODE is topologically conjugate to its inverse, then so is each member of the one-parameter family of one-step integrators. If the solutions of the ODE are elliptic, then for sufficiently small values of the parameter, the one-step integrator is also elliptic. In the limit as the parameter of the one-step family of maps goes to zero, the one-step integrator satisfies the ODE exactly. Further, it can be experimentally verified that if the ODE is chaotic, then so is the one-step integrator. In effect, the one-step integrator retains the dynamical characteristics of the solutions of the ODE, even with relatively large step sizes, while in the limit as the parameter goes to zero, it solves the ODE exactly. We illustrate the dynamical, in contrast to numerical, accuracy of this integrator with two distinctly different examples: First we use it to integrate the unforced Van der Pol equation for large ∊, ∊≥10 which corresponds to an almost continuous square-wave solution. Second, we use it to obtain the Poincaré map for two different versions of the periodically forced Duffing equation for parameter values where the solutions are chaotic. The dynamical accuracy of the integrator is illustrated by the reproduction of well-known strange attractors. The production of these attractors is eleven times longer when using a conventional fourth-order predictor-corrector method. The theory presented here extends to higher dimensions and will be discussed in detail in a forthcoming paper. However, we caution that the theory we present here is not intended as a line of research in numerical methods for ODEs.

Résumé :
In this paper we propose STEAM practices that would foster mathematics learning through modelling architecture while connecting to culture and history. The architectural modelling process is applied by the teachers as participants of these practices from different countries allowing a broad cultural and historical connection to mathematics education. The modelling is implemented in GeoGebra platform as it is an open-source platform to allow teachers to model on a mathematics basis. The architectural modelling process does not provide participants with steps to follow but rather allows them to explore the architectural models’ components and construct them with various approaches which may foster problem solving techniques. We aim to investigate how different phases of this approach (such as motivation, modeling, and printing process) reflect on opportunities of learning in STEAM education, with a particular lens in mathematical development from open tasks. This paper will show two use cases that took place in Upper Austria and the MENA region.

This article has two goals. Firstly, it shows how a relatively novel technique (Agent Based Modelling, hereafter ABM) can integrate different data types that are often used only in separate strands of research (interviews, experiments and surveys). It does this by comparing a well-known ABM of attitude dynamics with an alternative model using data from surveys and experiments. Secondly, the article explains ABM methodology and why it is important to the distinctiveness of ABM as a research method. In particular, the ramifications of differing approaches to ABM calibration and validation are discussed using the two different ABM as examples. The article concludes by showing how ABM might provide a progressive research strategy for integrating different data types and thus different disciplines in attitude research.

Résumé :
Within the framework of the research and innovation strategy RIS3 “Sustainable Living” (POR-FSE, funded by the Veneto Region), for the improvement of the resilience and adaptation capacity of the Veneto territory to environmental crises and emergencies, the subject of the contribution returns the results of the participatory experimentation of the project H.E.L.P. Veneto ‘ High-efficiency Emergency Living Prototypes Veneto - Sustainable adaptive residences for temporary stay in environmental emergencies. The research concerns the design of a minimum flexible emergency living module, replicable on a large scale, multifunctional, sustainable, powered by off-grid systems and integrated into the built environment. The housing unit uses timber, a material linked to the local building tradition, whose prefabricated modular reversibility follows principles of circular reuse. Moreover, the constructive adaptability of the interior spaces is reflected in a “liquid space” capable of transforming itself according to the needs of the occupants. The paper introduces a form of participatory design of the emergency housing module, based on the engagement of small and large companies, related to different segments of the construction market, a leading sector in the economy of Veneto. The participatory approach borrows from Architectural Technology the tools needed to understand the characteristics of the settlement system, the potential of the project and the value of scientific stakeholder engagement in the process. Using the Soft System Methodology, direct investigation protocols have been constructed relating to the performance of the living unit. Using Strategic Options Development and Analysis (SODA), the results of the experimented survey (large-scale questionnaires) were decoded, interpreted and systematised. The processing of the answers allowed the stakeholders to validate the potential of the proposed module and, at the same time, to be informed about its characteristics. The innovation of the method lies precisely in the modelling phase, which makes it possible to integrate the results of the hard and soft data analyses and to make it clear how participation plays an essential role in the process of designing and validating the proposed module.

The fact that traditional price/cost models are unrelated to the construction process renders them largely unsuited to the provision of meaningful price/cost advice. The nature and lengthiness of the construction planning process has precluded its incorporation into price/cost modelling during the pre-tender phase of the traditional building procurement process. The nub of the modelling problem has been how to integrate the complex process of construction planning into the pre-tender price/cost modelling process. In this paper the authors propose the synthesis of artificial intelligence techniques and construction planning techniques, resulting in a conceptual framework for a network-based cost modelling system for use by quantity surveyors in the cost modelling of buildings.

While security assessments of information systems are being increasingly performed with support of security modelling, safety assessments are still undertaken with traditional techniques such as Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA). As system modelling is becoming an increasingly important part of developing more safety critical systems, the safety field can benefit from security techniques that integrate system modelling and security aspects. This paper adapts an existing security modelling technique, Misuse Sequence Diagrams, to support failure analysis. The resulting technique, called Failure Sequence Diagrams, is used to support Failure Mode and Effect Analysis in an industrial setting. Based on the experiences, the authors suggest improvements both to traditional safety techniques and to security and safety modelling.

It is suggested that a simple biological model is the most appropriate framework in which to integrate physiology and modelling with plant breeding. Methods by which physiology and modelling may contribute to assessment of adaptive traits and to selection for adaptation in a breeding programme are considered.

The investigation (i.e. modelling, simulation, understanding and control) of complex adaptive systems is a problematic issue mainly due to the immaturity of systems scientific modelling paradigms. The apparent analogies between complex adaptive systems and production networks provide the opportunity to formulate the latter one in terms of the first, and to integrate the knowledge and the way of thinking of both fields. Through the application of the method of analogy and agent-based modelling and the development of a methodology a disciplined way of thinking is presented that involves the formulation of natural scientific concepts in terms of simulation models.

Résumé :
Building information modelling (BIM) is increasingly appropriate for infrastructure projects, and in particular for transport infrastructure. It is a digital solution that integrates the practices of the construction industry in facility management during the whole life cycle. This integration is possible through a single tool, which is the 3D digital model. Nevertheless, BIM standards, such as industry foundation classes, are still in the pipeline for infrastructure management. These standards do not fully meet the requirements of operation and maintenance of transport infrastructure. This paper shows how BIM could be implemented to address issues related to the operation and maintenance phase for transport infrastructure management. For this purpose, a new ontological approach, called Industry Foundation Classes for Operation and Maintenance of Infrastructures (IFCInfra4OM), is detailed. This ontology aims to standardise the use of building information modelling for operation and maintenance in road infrastructures. To highlight the interest of the proposed ontological approach, a building information model of a section on the A7 Agadir–Marrakech Highway in Morocco is produced according to IFCInfra4OM. Résumé :
Within post-Keynesian macroeconomics, the Kaleckian streams analysing demand regimes and the Minskyan streams analysing financial instability have proceeded relatively independently. To develop a comprehensive alternative to mainstream economics, post-Keynesians will have to integrate Kaleckian and Minskyan arguments with an analysis of the supply side. This paper gives a partial update on advances in Kalecki-Minsky modelling. First, theoretically, it discusses the notion of pseudo-Goodwin cycles. Second, it presents empirical findings on endogenous debt cycles. Third, it reviews evidence of the relative size of distributional and financial effects on demand. Fourth, it reports results on the drivers of household debt.

Résumé :
Cloud computing complexity is growing rapidly with the advancements that it is witnessing. It has created a requirement to simplify the process of configuring cloud and re-configuring it when required, it also involves tasks like auto scaling of infrastructure, elastic computing and maintaining the health of the servers. The proposed method introduces a smart cloud management using knowledge base, which models the resources of cloud; it handles service level agreement and its evaluations. The proposed knowledge base supports representational state transfer (REST/RESTful) services to store and manipulate different cloud aspects like type of application, business configuration, and metrics value and its type; it also implements the strategy for efficient resource management for smart clouds. The proposed architecture consists of smart cloud engine (which provides autonomous services, which help to exploit cloud resources for service optimization and to perform service automation), knowledge base (KB) (provide a cloud ontology which will help in the management of resources and provides intelligence to the smart cloud), server and cloud enrolment, designated monitoring tool and moderator. The resulted module is easy to integrate with any of the existing cloud management tool or orchestrator. As It is developed using REST protocol and extensible markup language (XML) language it is also easy to integrate with existing monitoring tool or application programming interface (APIs).

Résumé :
Facilities Management (FM) as the total management of all services supports the core businesses of an organisation in a building. However, today’s buildings are increasingly sophisticated and the need for information to operate and maintain them is vital. Facility Managers have to acquire, integrate, edit, and update diverse facility information ranging from building elements, fabric data, operational costs, contract types, room allocation, logistics, maintenance, etc. However, FM professionals face challenges resulting in cost and time related productivity, efficiency and effectiveness losses. Building Information Modelling (BIM), that seeks to integrate the building lifecycle, can provide improvements and help to overcome those challenges. Thus, the paper explores how BIM can contribute to and improve the FM profession. It uses the MediaCityUK project as a case study, which is a regeneration project aiming to attract media institutions locally and worldwide and establish itself as an international centre for excellence. For this purpose, the key FM tasks are identified and a BIM model for the new university building in MediaCityUK is developed and experimented with the FM tasks by a group of FM experts. As a result, the paper explains how BIM can support FM tasks in an itemised manner.

Résumé :
A simplified modelling technique for modelling viscoelastic fluids is proposed from the perspective of Discrete Multiphysics. This approach, based on the concept of linear additive composition of energy potentials, aims to integrate Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) with an equivalent elastic potential tailored for fluid flow simulations. The model was implemented using a particle-based software, explored and thoroughly validated with results from numerical experiments on three different flow conditions. The model was able to successfully capture a large extent of viscoelastic responses to external forcing, ranging from pure viscous flows to creep-dominated Bingham type of behaviour. It is concluded that, thanks to the modularity and tunable characteristics of the parameters involved, the proposed modelling approach can be a powerful simulation tool for modelling or mimicking the behaviour of viscoelastic substances.

Résumé :
Security modelling and analysing not only require solving technical problems but also reasoning on the organization as a whole for the development of a secure system. Assumptions exist about trust relationships among actors within the system environment, which play an important role in modelling and analysing security. Such assumptions are critical and must be analysed systematically for ensuring the overall system security. In this paper, the authors introduce trust-based concepts to identify these trust assumptions, and integrate the trust concepts with security concepts for the development of secure software systems. For this purpose, Secure Tropos’ security modelling activities are extended with trust modelling activities based on the trust-based concepts. The CASE tool SecTro was extended to include the notation of the trust-based concepts to support the methodology. Finally, a running example from the UK National Health Service (NHS) domain is used to demonstrate how trust can be used for security modelling.

Résumé :
In this paper, adaptive compensation with a robust integral of the sign of the extended error (RISEE) feedback is developed for high precise tracking control of systems in the presence of simultaneous structured and unstructured uncertainties. To handle various uncertainties existing in the system in one controller, we propose an adaptive RISEE controller (ARISEE), in which an adaptive law based on the improved discontinuous projection method is synthesized to handle parametric uncertainties and the RISEE robust term to attenuate unmodelled disturbances. Moreover, the present controller does not need a priori knowledge on the bounds of the lumped disturbances and the gain of the designed robust control law can itself be tuned. The major feature of the proposed controller is that it can theoretically guarantee global asymptotic tracking performance with a continuous control input, in the presence of parametric uncertainties and unmodelled disturbances via Lyapunov analysis. Comparative numerical results verify the effectiveness of the proposed non-linear controller.

The transmission line modelling (TLM) method is briefly discussed, showing how lumped dynamic components can be represented by equivalent lines. A hydraulic position control system was modelled by the TLM method, requiring mechanical and fluid transmission line models and a special ‘integrator’ line. The theoretical responses to step inputs are compared with experimental ones. Good agreement is shown.

Résumé :
Water scarcity, which is exacerbated by climate change, is a major challenge to ensure human well-being. Therefore, it is equally important to protect conventional water resources from degradation and at the same time to identify cost-effective alternatives with a low carbon footprint. In this regard, stormwater plays a key role as it is a largely under-utilised resource for both, potable and non-potable use. However, stormwater carries substantial loads of pollutants to receiving waters such as rivers. Unfortunately, the lack of comprehensive stormwater quality modelling strategies, which account for the effects of climate change, constrains the formulation of effective measures to improve the quality of stormwater. Currently, there is a significant knowledge gap in the merging of stormwater quality modelling and climate modelling. This paper critically reviews current stormwater quality modelling approaches (quantity and quality) and the role of climate modelling outputs in stormwater quality modelling. This is followed by the presentation of a robust framework to integrate the impacts of climate change with stormwater quality models.

Résumé :
This paper outlines the application and usefulness of a software platform that enables hydrologists to develop custom functionality in a new hydrological modelling tool, eWater Source, designed for water resources planning and management. The flexible architecture of the software allows incorporation of third-party components as plug-ins to add new capabilities that are not built in. Plug-ins can be developed to adapt the software to suit the needs of hydrologists with modest software development knowledge. This can result in an improvement in workflow and efficiencies. In addition, modellers can use plug-ins to integrate hydrological process and management models that may not be able to be built in the normal tool. The paper introduces the plug-ins functionality of the modelling tool, its design and applications with three example plug-ins to demonstrate. These are: (1) a data processing plug-in to upscale urban environment models; (2) a management rule plug-in to calculate loss allowances for the Pioneer Valley; and (3) a model plug-in to integrate into a river system model. For planning purposes, the use of plug-ins is thought to be critical for modelling management rules for various jurisdictions since these can vary significantly between jurisdictions and change over time.

Résumé :
In any modelling activity, a framework to determine the maturity of a developed model before its use is highly advantageous. Such a framework would save modellers expensive time in many areas of information systems. It would also lower the risk of users relying on an incomplete or inaccurate model. In this paper, we develop a framework which uses internal inconsistencies as a quantitative indicator for estimating the completeness and correctness of a model as it is cooperatively evolved. Whilst internal inconsistencies are due to bad fit between different parts of a model, we argue that they are also correlated with how the evolved model fits with the "world". This argument underpins our framework to evaluate integrated models. Contributions of this paper are three folds: firstly, it presents a theoretically grounded framework for integrating models. We extend an existing incremental modelling framework, NRDR, which represents multiple hierarchical restricted domains (MHRD), with automatic concept integration to allow NRDR to deal with multiple experts. Secondly, we couple this integration framework with a theoretically grounded monitoring process to assess the quality of the cooperatively developed model. Thirdly, we illustrate an initial empirical study of our evaluation and integration framework in a computer hardware administration domain. We capture and integrate computer hardware models from several experts and we use our modelling evaluation framework to evaluate the resultant cooperative model.
