Résumé :
The elderly citizen’s health care need some radical changes and improvements to alleviate the situation where the quality of service must be enhanced without overburdening the caregivers under the weighty workload. Much of research is done and many researchers all around the world emphasize the importance of assistive technologies. Current technological advancements in communication allow us to build systems which could be useful tools for the caregivers and allow the elderly to live more autonomous and active life. Offering stimulus to the elderly to experience with the technology could lessen the feel of social isolation and ameliorate the quality of service significantly. Shrinking electronics, mobiles and sensors do not bound the use only in homes or facilities, but allow the use in many different environments. While using technology of this kind, the caregivers could give guidance or follow the health status of a mobile elderly citizen in remote fashion and give help if needed. This thesis is also immersing in the matter by producing a Visual Guidance system that utilizes current mobile technology, actuators, sensors and uses a virtual reality as a communication medium between the caregivers and elderly citizens. The system consists of two different parts combined together to form a real-time communication system between caregivers and elderly citizen. The system uses Android smart phone’s built-in sensors to track the movement of the elderly. Those sensors are location based sensors such as GPS and acceleration and magnetometer sensors. This system provides an open map view of the world where the elderly citizen move. Also to improve the communication between the elderly and caregiver, video and audio communication has been used as one of our research aims. The caregiver can remotely use the smart phone to open video and audio communication with the elderly if needed. The system has been integrated with indicator base smart glasses so that when the elderly citizen are on the move, the caregiver can give directional advices on where and when to go. The authors used integration testing to evaluate the system and comparing the current system functions with the requirements of the system. Also the authors made sure that the delay with communication was small enough so it would be safe for the caregivers to communicate with the elderly citizen. For future work we suggested various actions such as integrating indicator based glasses with the Pupil Pro glasses, finding the most appropriate security solutions for the system and testing the system with real-life caregivers and elderly citizen.

Résumé :
Machine learning has become one of the most emerging topics in a lot of research areas, such as pervasive and ubiquitous computing. Such computing applications always rely on the supervised learning approach to recognize user’s context before a suitable level of services are provided. However, since more and more users are involved in modern applications, the monitored data cannot be guaranteed to be always true due to wrong information. This may cause the mislabeling in machine learning and so affects the prediction. The goal of this Ph.D. thesis is to improve the data quality and solve the mislabeling problem caused by considering non-expert users. To achieve this goal, we propose a novel algorithm, called Skeptical Learning, aiming at interacting with the users and filtering out anomalies when an invalid input is monitored. This algorithm guarantees the machine to use the pre-known knowledge to check the availability of its own prediction as well as the label provided by the users. This thesis clarifies how we design this algorithm and makes three main contributions: (i.) we study the predictability of human behavior through the notion of personal context; (ii.)we design and develop Skeptical Learning as a paradigm to deal with the unreliability of users when providing non-confidential labels that describe their personal context; (iii.) we introduce an MCS platform where we implement Skeptical Learning on top of it to solve unreliable labels issue. Our evaluations have shown that Skeptical Learning could be widely used in pervasive and ubiquitous computing applications to better understand the quality of the data relying on the machine knowledge, and thus prevent mislabeling problem due to non-expert information.

Résumé :
Healthcare systems have assimilated information and communication technologies in order to improve the quality of healthcare and patient's experience at reduced costs. The increasing digitalization of people's health information raises however new threats regarding information security and privacy. Accidental or deliberate data breaches of health data may lead to societal pressures, embarrassment and discrimination. Information security and privacy are paramount to achieve high quality healthcare services, and further, to not harm individuals when providing care. With that in mind, we give special attention to the category of Mobile Health (mHealth) systems. That is, the use of mobile devices (e.g., mobile phones, sensors, PDAs) to support medical and public health. Such systems, have been particularly successful in developing countries, taking advantage of the flourishing mobile market and the need to expand the coverage of primary healthcare programs. Many mHealth initiatives, however, fail to address security and privacy issues. This, coupled with the lack of specific legislation for privacy and data protection in these countries, increases the risk of harm to individuals. The overall objective of this thesis is to enhance knowledge regarding the design of security and privacy technologies for mHealth systems. In particular, we deal with mHealth Data Collection Systems (MDCSs), which consists of mobile devices for collecting and reporting health-related data, replacing paper-based approaches for health surveys and surveillance. This thesis consists of publications contributing to mHealth security and privacy in various ways: with a comprehensive literature review about mHealth in Brazil; with the design of a security framework for MDCSs (SecourHealth); with the design of a MDCS (GeoHealth); with the design of Privacy Impact Assessment template for MDCSs; and with the study of ontology-based obfuscation and anonymisation functions for health data.

Résumé :
In the first part of this thesis, the information capacity of time-varying fading channels is analysed using finite-state Markov channel (FSMC) models. Both fading channel amplitude and fading channel phase are modelled as finite-state Markov processes. The effect of the number of fading channel gain partitions on the capacity is studied (from 2 to 128 partitions). It is observed that the FSMC capacity is saturated when the number of fading channel gain partitions is larger than 4 to 8 times the number of channel input levels. The rapid FSMC capacity saturation with a small number of fading channel gain partitions can be used for the design of computationally simple receivers, with a negligible loss in the capacity. Furthermore, the effect of fading channel memory order on the capacity is studied (from first- to fourth-order). It is observed that low-order FSMC models can provide higher capacity estimates for fading channels than high-order FSMC models, especially when channel states are poorly observable in the presence of channel noise. To explain the effect of memory order on the FSMC capacity, the capacities of high-order and low-order FSMC models are analytically compared. It is shown that the capacity difference is caused by two factors: 1) the channel entropy difference, and 2) the channel observability difference between the high-order and low-order FSMC models. Due to the existence of the second factor, the capacity of high-order FSMC models can be lower than the capacity of low-order FSMC models. Two sufficient conditions are proven to predict when the low-order FSMC capacity is higher or lower than the high-order FSMC capacity. In the second part of this thesis, a new implicit (blind) channel estimation method in time- varying fading channels is proposed. The information source emits bits ???0??? and ???1??? with unequal probabilities. The unbalanced source distribution is used as a priori known signal structure at the receiver for channel estimation. Compared to pilot-symbol-assisted channel estimation, the proposed channel estimation technique can achieve a superior receiver bit error rate performance, especially at low signal to noise ratio conditions.

Résumé :
The aim of this thesis was to determine the execution times of different cryptographic algorithms in one of the hardware used in Asha families and compare the execution times between HW accelerated, OpenSSL and a company proprietary cryptographic library. Moreover, the motivation was to find out if the HW accelerated cryptographic function should be used when available due to execution time. Furthermore the aim was to find out if the transition to use OpenSSL is to be preferred in terms of the execution times over the company proprietary cryptographic library. In order to give wider perspective of the cryptography the thesis introduces a brief history of the cryptography. The following cryptographic functions are discussed in the thesis: hash functions, message authentication, symmetric and asymmetric cryptographic algorithms. The cryptographic algorithms are also examined from the embedded systems point of view. In addition of that the security of the embedded systems is discussed briefly in order to introduce the context where cryptographic functions are used. The other aim and the author’s personal motivation was to learn and deepen the knowledge of cryptographic algorithms, their usage and the issues to take into consideration when working with embedded devices. The research methods were a literature review and empirical research. The results supports hypothesis that it’s not always beneficial to use HW accelerated algorithms. The results surprised partially because the expectations were that HW accelerated execution would be much faster. Further investigations should be made in order to find the root cause for the results. Most of the algorithms were faster with OpenSSL in comparison to the company proprietary library and some of the HW accelerated algorithms. The performance is better in most of the crypto operations with OpenSSL than with the company proprietary crypto library. The thesis contributes the fact that no one should assume that it is obvious that the HW accelerated crypto operations are always faster. In many cases it is not significant in terms of performance, but in those cases where the performance is the critical issue the execution times should be measured rather than assumed.

Résumé :
Heuristics are a much researched, scientifically studied way to solve usability issues in user interface. However, the way of conducting usability evaluation is based on abstract models. As the heuristics as guidelines are abstract and their interpretation depends on the researcher, the gap between scientifically created heuristics and the practitioners’ methods of developing games has grown. This study introduces the Explicit Heuristics Design-model (EHD). It has been developed by using design science research methodology. This model can be implemented by using heuristic evaluation and expert evaluation methods. The EHD-model enables the extraction of explicit heuristics data from the games. The hypothesis proposed a connection between the heuristics and the revenue. The final evaluation phase of the EHD-model revealed that a correlation between the heuristics and the revenue generated by Android mobile fighting games exist. The EHD-model was also able to point out the most important heuristics affecting the generated revenue. This study reduces the gap between the scientific community and practitioners. It offers the scientific community a new view and results concerning heuristics and the practitioners a tool to enhance the profitability of a game.

Résumé :
This thesis focuses on the design of stereoscopic 3D user interfaces (UIs) for mobile devices. 3D output is no longer limited to large screens in cinemas or living rooms. Nowadays more and more mobile devices are equipped with autostereoscopic 3D (S3D) touchscreens, which do not require the use of special eyewear to perceive the depth effect. As a consequence, interaction with 3D content now also happens whilst users are on the move. This thesis presents an empirical study that was carried out to assess how users interact with mobile S3D devices, both whilst static and when walking. Following this, the design and implementation of a prototype S3D application for indoor navigation is presented. A user study (n=27) that investigated differences in touch accuracy between 2D touchscreens and mobile S3D touchscreens was carried out. The touch target sizes and aspect ratios required for reliable user interaction in each case were calculated, for example concluding that the increase in minimum touch target size caused by walking is larger for a S3D UI than for a 2D UI. This thesis also identifies differences in the angle at which users held the S3D device vs. the 2D device, and reports on depth perception, both in static and mobile contexts. Following on from the empirical study, a prototype S3D indoor navigation application was designed and implemented. Several findings related to visualisation issues in such interfaces are described, e.g. the correct way to use drop shadows as visual cues. This thesis provides valuable information to developers of the next generation of UIs and applications for mobile S3D displays and devices.

Portable electronics has fueled the rich emergence of multimedia applications that have led to the exponential growth in content creation and consumption. New energy-efficient integrated circuits and systems are necessary to enable the increasingly complex augmented-reality applications, such as high-performance multimedia, "big-data" processing and smart healthcare, in real-time on mobile platforms of the future. This thesis presents an energy-efficient system design approach with algorithm, architecture and circuit co-design for multiple application areas. A shared transform engine, capable of supporting multiple video coding standards in real-time with ultra-low power consumption, is developed. The transform engine, implemented using 45 nm CMOS technology, supports Quad Full-HD (4k x 2k) video coding with reconfigurable processing for H.264 and VC-1 standards at 0.5 V and operates down to 0.3 V to maximize energy-efficiency. Algorithmic and architectural optimizations, including matrix factorization, transpose memory elimination and data dependent processing, achieve significant savings in area and power consumption. A reconfigurable processor for computational photography is presented. An efficient implementation of the 3D bilateral grid structure supports a wide range of non-linear filtering applications, including high dynamic range imaging, low-light enhancement and glare reduction. The processor, implemented using 40 nm CMOS technology, enables real-time processing of HD images, while operating down to 0.5 V and achieving 280x higher energy-efficiency compared to software implementations on state-of-the-art mobile processors. A scalable architecture enables 8x energy scalability for the same throughput performance, while trading-off output resolution for energy. Widespread use of medical imaging techniques has been limited by factors such as size, weight, cost and complex user interface. A portable medical imaging platform for accurate objective quantification of skin condition progression, using robust computer vision techniques, is presented. Clinical validation shows 95% accuracy in progression assessment. Algorithmic optimizations, reducing the memory bandwidth and computational complexity by over 80%, pave the way for energy-efficient hardware implementation to enable real-time portable medical imaging.

Résumé :

The theme of this research is mobile transaction processing systems, focusing on versatile data sharing mechanisms in volatile mobile environments.

The rapid growth of wireless network technologies and portable computing devices has promoted a new mobile working environment. A mobile environment is different from the traditional distributed environment due to its unique characteristics: the mobility of users or computers, the frequent and unpredictable disconnections of wireless networks, and the resource constraints of mobile computing devices.

On the one hand, the mobile environment promotes a new working model, i.e., people can carry out their work while being on the move. The environment for accessing and processing information is changing rapidly from stationary and location dependent to mobile and location independent. On the other hand, these unique characteristics of the mobile environment pose many challenges to mobile transaction processing systems, especially in terms of long delaying periods, data unavailability and data inconsistency.

Many research proposals that focus on supporting transaction processing in mobile environments have been developed. However, there are still major issues that have not been completely solved. One of the problems is to support the sharing of data among transactions in volatile mobile environments. Our solution is to provide the mobile transaction processing system with flexible and adaptable data sharing mechanisms that can cope with the dynamic changes of the surrounding environmental conditions while ensuring data consistency of the database systems.

The results of our research consist of three important contributions:

The first contribution is a versatile mobile data sharing mechanism. This is achieved by the concepts of the mobile affiliation workgroup model that focuses on supporting mobile collaborative work in the horizontal dimension. The mobile affiliation workgroup model allows mobile hosts to form temporary and dynamic mobile workgroups by taking advantage of wireless communication technologies, i.e., the ability of direct communication among nearby mobile hosts. The data sharing processes among transactions at different mobile hosts are carried out by shared transactions, called export and import transactions. These shared transactions interact through a mobile sharing workspace, called an export-import repository. Data consistency of the database systems is assured by either serialization of transactions or applying user-defined policies. Our mobile data sharing mechanism provides an adaptable way for increasing data availability, while taking into account all the important characteristics of mobile environments, which are: the mobility of computing hosts, the frequent and unpredictable disconnections of wireless networks, and the resource constraints of mobile computing devices. Therefore, it has the ability to increase the throughput of mobile transaction processing systems.

The second contribution is a data conflict awareness mechanism that supports mobile transactions to be aware of conflicts among database operations in mobile environments. The data conflict awareness mechanism is developed based on the concepts of the anchor transaction that plays the role of a proxy transaction for local transactions at a disconnected mobile host. With the support of the data conflict awareness mechanism, the mobile transaction processing system has the capacity to minimize delay of transaction processes and to enforce consistency of the databas systems.

The third contribution is a mobility control mechanism that supports the mobile transaction processing system to efficiently handle the movement of transactions in mobile environments. We distinguish two types of transaction mobility in accordance with: (1) the movement of mobile hosts through mobile cells, and (2) the movement of mobile hosts across mobile affiliation workgroups. The mobility of transactions through mobile cells is handled by movement of the anchor transaction. While the mobility of transactions across mobile affiliation workgroups is controlled by the dynamic structure of export and import transactions.

We have developed a mobile transaction processing system for MOWAHS. Especially, we have successfully designed, implemented, and tested several important system components such as the mobile locking system and the mobile data sharing system.

Résumé :
The original purpose of a mobile phone was designed for basic communication. Today, phones are used to perform different advanced activities, for example, to access location via GPS, to take photos, as media players, and to access the internet. The growing usage of smartphones highly contributed to the emergence of advanced mobile applications. In developing countries mobile phones are the most common device used to access the Internet. This study aims to provide train timetable mobile application for the new developed Addis Ababa light rail transportation system. The purpose of developing a train scheduling app is to help users find train timetables easily and to improve time efficiency. Technology and mobile usage in Ethiopia are assessed to understand the current Information and Communication Technology (ICT) situation in Ethiopia. The study utilized the lean startup method for designing and developing the mobile application. In addition, the PSD model and a system’s self-referential persuasion concept provided the theoretical framework. Persuasive system design’s primary task support principles are utilized strongly in the design and development of the app by reducing complexity and providing a meaningful content. Design science research integrated with lean software development principles was used to carry out this research. A literature review was conducted to support the thesis with background knowledge. Interviews were also conducted to gather user feedback with regards to the process of designing and developing the app. The study found that waiting for public transportation is time-consuming. The mobile application improves time efficiency and enhances punctuality. Evaluating the mobile application on the actual market is one of the limitations of this study as the developed app was only evaluated between test groups. The newness of the train system in Addis Ababa and bureaucratic management has limited the present study’s ability to gain accurate information about the train schedule and related information.

Digital watermarking has generally been used for copy-‭ ‬and copyright protection,‭ ‬authentication and,‭ ‬more recently,‭ ‬value-added services.‭ ‬It has been restricted to digital world but by developing methods which are able to read a watermark from a printed image with a camera phone would enable the watermark extraction to be free of time and place. The aim of this work was to compare print-cam robust watermarking methods and illustrate the problems that emerge when the watermarking methods are implemented on a camera phone.‭ ‬This was achieved by selecting three print-cam robust watermarking methods and implementing them on a camera phone.‭ ‬The robustness of the methods was tested and the results reported. The obtained results showed that some changes are required to make the earliest proposed watermarking methods work on a modern camera phone.‭ ‬The robustness of the methods was in line with the intended applications as well as camera phone specifications.

Résumé :
The purpose of this thesis is to study the process of developing a behaviour change support system (BCSS) which help users to manage and utilize their time. Proper time management is an important asset for a successful life. However, most of us have difficulties in using our time efficiently due to various reasons. Some of the reasons include procrastination and becoming overoptimistic about completing tasks in short periods of time. On this study, an iOS based application is developed based on BCSS theory. The application can be used by anyone who wants to improve their efficiency in time management. The intention of the system is to help users identify and improve their weaknesses on time management through using the application for a longer period. BCSS is one area of persuasive technology research, and it is defined as information systems designed to form, alter or reinforce attitudes, behaviours or an act of complying without using deception, coercion or inducements. BCSS are applied in various sectors such as health, wellness and environment. It is also important to note that Persuasive System Design model (PSD) is used as the main construct to develop our system. PSD provides a recent and technology oriented persuasion framework that helps to design, develop and evaluate BCSS. This project is based on a Design Science research method through developing an artefact. In the end, the system is evaluated qualitatively.

Résumé :
The current proliferation of mobile systems, such as smart phones, PDA and tablets, has led to their adoption as the primary computing platforms for many users. This trend suggests that designers will continue to aim towards the convergence of functionality on a single mobile device. However, this convergence penalizes the mobile system in computational resources such as processor speed, memory consumption, disk capacity, as well as in weight, size, ergonomics and the user’s most important component, battery life. Therefore, this current trend aims towards the efficient and effective use of its hardware and software components. Hence, energy consumption and response time are major concerns when executing complex algorithms on mobile devices because they require significant resources to solve intricate problems. Current cloud computing environments for performing complex and data intensive computation remotely are likely to be an excellent solution for off-loading computation and data processing from mobile devices restricted by reduced resources. In cloud computing, virtualization enables a logical abstraction of physical components in a scalable manner that can overcome the physical constraint of resources. This optimizes IT infrastructure and makes cloud computing a worthy cost effective solution. The intent of this thesis is to determine the types of applications that are better suited to be off-loaded to the cloud from mobile devices. To this end, this thesis quantitatively and qualitatively compares the performance of executing two different kinds of workloads locally on two different mobile devices and remotely on two different cloud computing providers. The results of this thesis are expected to provide valuable insight to developers and architects of mobile applications by providing information on the applications that can be performed remotely in order to save energy and get better response times while remaining transparent to users.

Résumé :
Background: Neck problems, tiredness, depression and other mental health problems are nowadays very common. Many people have difficulties addressing their health problems because they don’t have the motivation or ability to change their attitudes and behaviours. It would be important to offer them help and tools so that they would be able to take care of themselves better and improve their well-being. All sorts of technical equipment such as PC’s, laptops, tablets, and mobile phones have become part of people’s everyday life. There is a lot of potential to use these different technical devices as a tool for providing personal wellbeing programs and applications. These include games, social media and personal health applications. The Aim of the Study: The aim of this thesis is to study if tailoring a general mobile mental wellness training application for stress management is possible and how it could be done to meet the needs of people who suffer from certain kinds of complaints. It was proposed that if the mobile mental wellness training program would be tailored to offer help for a certain complaint that a person suffers, it would improve user experience and person’s wellbeing. Methods: This research was an empirical case study. Theoretical part of this study provides a review of articles and other relevant literature. Empirical part of this study consisted of a large questionnaire conducted for the students and employees of the University of Oulu (N=756) as well as user studies conducted for a smaller number of people (N=30) selected based on certain criteria. The user study participants were divided into three different groups according to their complaints: tiredness, depression, and neck problems group. These three complaints were top three according to the results of the background questionnaire. The user study consisted of a user experience study made in laboratory settings as well as a field trial period where the participants used the application independently and their actions were logged. The users were guided to use exercises that were expected to help them with their complaints. User tests were video recorded to prevent data loss. Findings: The results showed that there weren’t big differences in user experience of the application between different complaint groups. User experience of the application was seen quite positive, but some issues made usage unpleasant, e.g. the application was mentioned being boring. Use of the application did not have an effect on people’s wellbeing. However the two-week long test period did not seem to be long enough. On the other hand, results also showed that people usually suffer from many different complaints at the same time so it is not easy to set people under certain complaint group and tailor health application very specifically for one complaint at time.

The Gulf Range Drone Control Upgrade System (GRDCUS) Mobile Control System (GMCS) is an integral part of the test ranges located on the Gulf of Mexico. This paper begins with a brief overview of the current Gulf Range systems. These systems consist of five major components: ground stations, ground computer systems, data link/transponders, consoles, and software. The GMCS van contains many of these components to provide a stand-alone range capability for remote operations. This paper describes the development and assembly of the GMCS van and focuses on the on-board computer systems, consoles, and data link technology. An overall system engineering approach was used during GMCS development and is highlighted through the use of rapid prototyping. This methodology and the lessons learned are presented in the paper. Suggestions for future applications are considered.

Résumé :
Nowadays people use mobile phones and other mobile devices. Most of us have a small computing device that is always with us. People use it example for calling, as calendar and organizer. Mobile devices with GPS receiver are also used to find paths in navigation. The main disadvantage of those systems is that we have to know places which we want to visit and they usually do not store any usable, valuable information about points of interest except phone numbers and addresses. The main idea of this thesis was to design a system that will run on most of phones and palms and will be helpful when visiting some new places and cities. This system should be able to find a route using user criteria. Those criteria should be simple and natural, like for example: a list of museums, the most famous historical objects, restaurants to visit, constraints to travel by bus and by walking. The system should find a path that fulfils those criteria, show it on screen, show names of objects, some short descriptions and photos of them and possible entrance costs. It should also be able to estimate time needed to travel from one object to the next and if it is possible, advise which bus line or other public means of transport may be used. It should be helpful for people that want to visit a city without having much information about it. Paths that are output of this system are only a proposition for trip. They will not be optimal but can not be counterintuitive and must be acceptable by the user.

Résumé :
As the rapid economic development of tourism industry in recent years, and gradually increasing user needs to tourism products and services, a variety of Tourism Information Systems (TISs) have been available. However, less attention is focused on these TISs from integration viewpoint, since currently most TISs are independent or isolated from the user’s perspective, tourists have to enter separately into different TISs in order to make a complete travel plan and get related tourism services. Advanced, Smart Tourism Information Systems (STISs) provide all tourism-related products and services in the unified system environment. This constructive case study proposes a framework for STIS including theoretical analyses of the core elements and components of the systems, and provides several potential development approaches to and recognized challenges as developing STISs. Interview-based scenarios with potential users are used to demonstrate the needs of independent travellers and in showing for which purposes the different systems should be integrated. The results show that the developed framework of STIS is promising and can be useful when integrating the systems as offering one-stop services for independent tourists. More research with a wider empirical sample is still required to generalize the results and test the framework in practice.

Résumé :
An examination of the management accounting systems literature revealed the need for additional research based on a contingency perspective. Specifically, additional empirical research based on a well-articulated theory. A theoretical model was developed building on Galbraith’s theory of organization structure. Two sources of uncertainty -- environmental uncertainty and task uncertainty -- were viewed as forming the information processing requirements faced by the organization. In response to these requirements, organizations were viewed as adapting by altering their level of decentralization and their use of budget systems. Organizational effectiveness was achieved by a proper fit between the uncertainty faced by the organization and these responses. Data were collected from business unit managers using a survey instrument. A total of 103 usable responses were obtained with an overall response rate of 49%. Previously developed measures were used for all variables except for budget system usefulness. A measure for this variable was developed and validated. The data were examined using path analysis. The data did not support the model. Problems encountered in the use of perceptual measures for the uncertainty variables appeared to be the most likely explanation for the weak results. However, when the data was split based on the performance measure an interesting result was observed. Specifically, the relationships between the uncertainty measures, decentralization, and budget system usefulness were different for the low and high-performance group. An explanation for this tinding was offered.

Résumé :
Evolution shapes biological systems to better match their desired functions. Hence, we can assume that sensory systems are adapted to optimize information processing. Nevertheless surprisingly little is known about how sensory systems are optimised, or organised, in relation to the information sampling and processing they perform. In particular, our understanding is limited on certain fundamental issues: (1) what are the roles of individual ionchannels in coding information in specialised neural networks, (2) how does information transfer through synapses, and (3) how are different types of information (motion/colour) routed and processed for higher order visual functions. Dipteran compound eyes provide highly useful model systems for examining the basic mechanisms involved in visual information processing; in particular, for assessing how graded potentials code visual information. For this thesis, I have performed extracellular and intracellular recordings from photoreceptors and their primary interneurones, large monopolar cells (LMC), in Calliphora and Drosophila, to investigate the three essential questions mentioned above. This thesis provides systematic characterisations of: (1) Drosophila dSK channels, small conductance calcium-activated potassium channels; (2) Adapting dynamics of postsynaptic quantal bumps in the first visual synapse in Calliphora; (3) in vivo spectral sensitivities of Drosophila R1-R6 photoreceptors and LMCs in wild-type and in selected mutant and transgenic flies. Together with collaborations inside/outside our laboratory, my study: (1) identified the functional roles and gain control of dSK channels in the first synaptic circuits in the fly eye and also clarified how intrinsic activities of neural network compensates for missing or faulty ion channels; (2) characterised how postsynaptic unitary voltage events (or bumps) adapted dynamically to maximize the rate of information transfer at the fly first visual synapse; 3) provided the first in vivo spectral sensitivity functions of Drosophila R1-R6 photoreceptors and LMCs, and demonstrated that functional inputs, from photoreceptors that have different spectral sensitivities, improve motion discrimination and robustness of perception.

This PhD thesis aims to study the distraction effects on driver performances. While driving, a driver must be able to maintain the vehicle control and also to process the relevant information from the road environment. These abilities can be impaired by the introduction of information and communication systems inside the car which put the driver in dual-task situation and increase the sources of distraction. This work tries to determine how the population of young novice drivers, characterized by a high crash rate (Clarke et al. 2005) and by poorly developed driving skills (Whelan et al. 2004) manages these situations of time sharing. Two experimentations were conducted. The first one, on real road, aims at analyzing the effects of simultaneously use of a navigation system and a mobile phone on the information processing (achieve by analyzing behavior parameters). The second one, in laboratory, aims at completing the first results, by focusing on modalities of research and handling information according to the drivers’ experience (novice or experienced). According to the driving experience, results are ambivalent in terms of information processing during divided attention situations

Mobile computing is a new emerging computing paradigm which poses many challenging data management problems. For wireless computing to be truly relevant to the users, mechanisms to disseminate answer tuples in response to relational queries must be supported. To process database queries, it may require manipulating a large portion of the base relation and it means that the wireless channel can become congested very quickly. Based on two query processing models, broadcast-based query processing models and on-demand location dependent query processing, we propose two different approaches to solve this problem. For the broadcast-based query processing model, we consider how to allocate the data objects on the broadcast channel to reduce the access latency for processing the database queries. In this approach, offline query processing and online query processing are considered. In offline processing, the query is processed after the values for all the relevant attributes are downloaded. In this case, the tuning time is fixed for a query. The access time is dependent on the order of attributes on the broadcast channel. To reduce the average access time, an efficient strategy for answering database queries in mobile environments is proposed. Experiments are performed to show that our data scheduling methods can achieve a good performance. In Online processing, the query is processed during the access of the values for each relevant attribute. The tuning time is minimal, if the access order of attributes is followed as the process order of query optimization. In this problem, we propose an efficient algorithm to determine the allocation of the data on the broadcast channel such that frequently co-accessed data are allocated close to each other. Our mechanism is based on the well-known problems named maximum branching and optimal linear ordering. Experiments are performed to justify the benefit of our approach. For the on-demand location dependent query processing model, we derive the condition for data replication and propose an associated cache replacement policy. The main goal of data replication is to reduce the network traffic generated by massive queries and to speed up the query processing. Moreover, we propose eight query processing strategies, simulate their performance according to different query types and other factors of the wireless environment, discuss the simulation results, and conclude with efficient strategies according to different conditions. The personal communications services (PCS) systems provide ubiquitous and customized services. The key issue, which affects the performance of the whole system, is the location management. Current systems group cells into location regions to reduce the location management cost which includes the location tracking cost and the registration cost. By considering users'' movement behaviors, four methods are proposed to derive location regions. These methods attempt to simultaneously reduce the location tracking cost and the registration cost. Several design issues are studied by considering the user movement patterns and the call-to-mobility ratio for the users. Simulations are performed to compare the performance of these methods with the existing strategies to show the superiority of our approaches.

Résumé :
M.A. (Information Technology)
The Internet contains large amounts of information that researchers can use, however, finding the required relevant information can be a lengthy exercise. Internet search engines, such as Google, allow users to search the Internet but these search engines only supply lists of information that "could" be relevant thereby forcing us, the users, to manually examine the list to select the relevant information that we require. Instead of requiring users to use Internet search engines to find lists of possibly useful information, it would be advantageous to have a system that would give an academic user a research summary report for the specified research query. This research summary report can be formatted in such a manner that would allow the user to have a list of links to the relevant information obtained, which could be used as an aid in the researcher's research projects. The design of the Mobile Agent Information Processing (MAIP) model and prototype relied heavily on mobile software agents (MSA). These MSAs will move from the creator system (the user's computer) to other known peer computer systems participating in the MAIP system. Whilst the MSAs are on the remote computer systems, relevant information is extracted from any of the text documents that are acknowledged as available by the remote host system. The extracted information will be returned to the creator system by each MSA where it will be processed and used to create the research summary report. The MAIP model is designed to locate, retrieve, and summarise information that is relevant to a researcher's research query, it can, therefore, be said that the MAIP model meets all the stated research objectives. The new and innovative model is deemed to offer an effective and feasible technology solution to the problem of information overload that exists within the electronic environment.

The purpose of this research was to design a low cost mobile positioning system based on Global System for Mobile communication network. The positioning system utilises Timing Advance, Signal Strength, a calibrated propagation system based on per -cell modelling and field measurements data to calculate the mobile position. Clutter and terrain features such as trees and buildings were modelled to closely represent the real environment to enhance the accuracy of the Signal Strength prediction. The key pillar of this approach is its ability to establish the contribution of each of the localised features to the propagation model. Based on the magnitude of the contribution of each feature, a conclusive correction factor for each feature was obtained. The proposed system is evaluated using field measurements collected from a Global System for Mobile communication network in diverse geographic locations in the outskirts of Pretoria. A fair correlation was established between field measurements and propagation model predictions.

« Learning users' interest to assist image browsing and searching ». Thesis, 2005. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b6074033.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In this thesis, we first investigate how to improve user experience of browsing large photos on mobile devices. Currently, the predominant methods for accessing large photos on small devices are down-sampling or manual browsing by zooming and scrolling. Image down-sampling or thumbnail view results in significant information loss due to the excessive resolution reduction. Manual browsing can avoid information loss but it is often time-consuming for users to catch the most crucial information of an image. Employing the concept of information asymmetry, the thesis investigates an image attention model and its extensions under different application scenarios. The image attention model can successfully solve the small screen browsing problem. First of all, different parts of an image contain different information, computer vision technology can analysis image and extract the attention objects to build the image attention model. Secondly, browsing large photo on small display can be formulated as a problem of optimized manipulating of attention objects to improve viewer's browsing experience, which brings about new functions such as automatic browsing and interactive browsing. Thirdly, the screen limitations of the mobile devices will force users to scroll and zoom while browsing images, which can be regarded as direct indications for users' attention, therefore new attention objects can be discovered by analyzing the past browsing log. Lastly, since psycho-physiological research tells us that the importance of an attention object may vary with the users' preferences and tasks, so attention model should also be adaptive to the users' interest.
The thesis also investigates the problem on how to improve the usability of the current image search engines, that is, how to explore the image search results on desktop PCs and mobile devices in a more effective way. The research results show that unsupervised learning technology can help improve the browsing efficiency. The similarity-based presentation method and clustering-base method are better for desktop PC platform and mobile platform respectively. The navigation operations are re-designed to make the new interface easy to use. Based on these results, the thesis also tries to investigate the problem on how to incorporate users' interaction in content-based image retrieval relevance feedback process. The new approach employs the parameter embedding visualization, multi-classifier learning and fusion methods to provide a seamless integrated browsing, user feedback and classifier learning process. Hu, Xinyu. « Personalized Policy Learning with Longitudinal mHealth Data ». Thesis, 2019. https://doi.org/10.7916/d8-94k8-1490.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Mobile devices, such as smartphones and wearable devices, have become a popular platform to deliver recommendations and interact with users. To learn the decision rule of assigning recommendations, i.e. policy, neither one homogeneous policy for all users nor completely heterogeneous policy for each user is appropriate. Many attempts have been made to learn a policy for making recommendations using observational mobile health (mHealth) data. The majority of them focuses on a homogeneous policy, that is a one-fit-to-all policy for all users. It is a fair starting point for mHealth study, but it ignores the underlying user heterogeneity. Users with similar behavior pattern may have unobservable underlying heterogeneity. To solve this problem, we develop a personalized learning framework that models both population and personalized effect simultaneously. In the first part of this dissertation, we address the personalized policy learning problem using longitudinal mHealth application usage data. Personalized policy represents a paradigm shift from developing a single policy that may prescribe personalized decisions by tailoring. Specifically, we aim to develop the best policy, one per user, based on estimating random effects under generalized linear mixed model. With many random effects, we consider new estimation method and penalized objective to circumvent high-dimensional integrals for marginal likelihood approximation. We establish consistency and optimality of our method with endogenous application usage. We apply our method to develop personalized prompt schedules in 294 application users, with a goal to maximize the prompt response rate given past application usage and other contextual factors. We found the best push schedule given the same covariates varied among the users, thus calling for personalized policies. Using the estimated personalized policies would have achieved a mean prompt response rate of 23% in these users at 16 weeks or later: this is a remarkable improvement on the observed rate (11%), while the literature suggests 3%-15% user engagement at 3 months after download. The proposed method compares favorably to existing estimation methods including using the R function glmer in a simulation study. In the second part of this dissertation, we aim to solve a practical problem in the mHealth area. Low response rate has been a major issue that blocks researchers from collecting high quality mHealth data. Therefore, developing a prompting system is important to keep user engagement and increase response rate. We aim to learn personalized prompting time for users in order to gain a high response rate. An extension of the personalized learning algorithm is applied on the Intellicare data that incorporates penalties of the population effect parameters and personalized effect parameters into learning the personalized decision rule of sending prompts. The number of personalized policy parameters increases with sample size. Since there is a large number of users in the Intellicare data, it is challenging to estimate such high dimensional parameters. To solve the computational issue, we employ a bagging method that first bootstraps subsamples and then ensembles parameters learned from each subsample. The analysis of Intellicare data shows that sending prompts at a personalized hour helps achieve a higher response rate compared to a one-fit-to-all prompting hour.

This work proposes a fast local image feature detector and descriptor that is im- plementable on a GPU. The BFROST feature detector is the first published GPU implementation of the popular FAST detector. A simple but novel method of feature orientation estimation which can be calculated in constant time is proposed. The robustness and reliability of the orientation estimation is validated against rotation invariant descriptors such as SIFT and SURF. Furthermore, the BFROST feature descriptor is robust to noise, scalable, rotation invariant, fast to compute in parallel and maintains low memory usage. It is demonstrated that BFROST is usable in real-time applications such as vision-based localization and mapping of images captured from micro aerial platforms.

The rapid growth of mobile information communication devices has led to great innovation in the healthcare industry. The trend is towards the advance in mobile technologies bring the portal devices, such as panel PC、GSM or PDA to employ Mobile Nursing Information Systems(MNIS) in nursing care routines. However, the evaluation indicators of MNIS are rare. Therefore, the study aims at evaluation the indications of MNIS. At first, based on the DeLone & McLean IS success model (2003), three basic aspects:information quality、system quality and service quality, and combined with relevant literatures in mobile devices, and modified indicators by relevant researches in MNIS to find out the indicators to evaluate the performance of MNIS. At last, evaluation indicators were examined by experts using Modified Delphi Method. After data analysis, this study proposed a total of 25 evaluation indicators of MNIS for academic and practical references.

With the advance of computer technologies, a user can use various kind of different devices to access internet resources anytime, anywhere. User can also use mobile device(e,g., PDA, Cell Phone) to browse the library web pages. Due to the limited resource in small device, it will casue the web pages can’t be presented entirely. During browsing, user may move between with different subnets, tiers and devices. In this thesis, we propose a Mobilie Information Library System(MLIS),it is an application in FULL (Fantasic Ubiquitous Living Land). User can request MLIS to get library web pages. MLIS is based on Hirerchical SIP Environment, so it can manage the user’s mobility. When moving between different networks or devices, it causes the problems that the web pages won’t suitable for the device. So we design a Content Adaptation Service(CAS) to deal with this problem, it will transcoding the library web pages according to network type and device type. CAS can make the pages most suitable for the devices.

Abstract Title of Thesis:Mobile Community Medicine Information System Author:Huang, Shu-Nu Thesis advised by :Lu,Li Taipei Medical University, Graduate Institute of Medical Informatics The concept of Community Medicine emerged between 1920 and 1940. With the change of times, health policies gradually evolved into the development of new public health concepts, which focus on preventive medicine instead of therapeutic medicine. Long-term medical care service can be divided into three major categories — home-based, community-based and institution-based — among these, community medicine is the basis for promoting community health. It is aimed at the people in the community, and its objective it to provide thorough medical care. community medicine is a long-term-care community service。 The objectives of this project lie in community medicine and mobile medicine information service. The user interface of mobile medicine information service is designed in accord with the Context-Aware principle. Since HTML is well known as a language of powerful hypermedia, we adopt XHTML as the markup language to describe community medicine information so as to make full use of the capability of HTML as well as the portability of XML, while UMRL based resource retrieval is used to access medical information. Take into account the variances in the software and hardware platforms of mobile system, we choose Java 2 as a Platform-Independent environment to develop our system. The mobile device is implemented in MIDP. Mobile Based Medical Extension is also provided to facilitate further development of mobile community medicine information system. In the community medicine aspect, the mobile community medicine information system can be established as a community-oriented and patient-based integrated medical service, which provides closer, complete and continuous medical health care. The services include, for example, individual heath plans, life sign measurements/detection, reminders of medicine administration for chronic disease patients, setting up outpatient service appointments for chronic disease patients, reminder of localities, inoculation reminders for infants, monitoring the blood sugar level of diabetics, insulin injection reminders, home medical care, examinations and reminders of examination dates. A mobile community medicine information system not only improves the public health in general and reduces the occurrence of diseases, but rationally monitors the increase of medical expenses and provides a complete and continuous medical care service. For the past few years, the portable devices have been popularly used by people in their daily life. Apple's iPhone launch Application Store (App store) in July 10, 2008. Due to Google Android System also launch applications on portable devices, users can use portable devices easily to facilitate a lot of things of everyday life. According to U.S. administration statistics, about 85% of elders suffer from more than one chronic disease, and about 30% of elders suffer from more than three chronic diseases. Multiple chronic diseases often cause multiple complications; usually cause polypharmacy, and always decreased quality of life. In Taiwan, 56% of elder Taiwanese suffer from chronic diseases, and 80% of them had more than one disease, and 40% of them had more than two kinds of diseases. In this thesis, we propose a medication information system on portable devices based on QR code identification scheme. By using this system, the patients and their families can understand information of drugs and avoid taking multiple medications at the same time to prevent interact. The system includes drug interactions reminder, medication reminders, and drug inventory management and medication inquiries. This four parts can be used as a user customized medication management system to alert the user whether the interaction between the drug and allows the user to clear the stock of drugs. When the user would like to check more information on drugs, user can link to the National Network System Pharmacopoeia query via this system.
