Résumé :
Even though the proliferation of handheld mobile communication devices has deepened Internet and broadband penetration in Nigeria, users of such services may not have detailed quantitative performance comparison between the services provided by different network operators. The study here reported is therefore an attempt to bridge the information gap. A measurement testbed based on the Raspberry Pi platform was developed to autonomously measure the mobile broadband performance of third generation (3G) and fourth generation (4G) broadband networks of the four major mobile network operators in the country. Under static access conditions, the system was set up to measure the upload throughput, download throughput and latency from a user-centric perspective. The measurements were taken by simultaneously sampling the networks of four mobile broadband service providers (9Mobile, Airtel, Globacom and MTN) over a period of three weeks in the city of Uyo, Nigeria. The results obtained revealed that Airtel achieved the highest peak download rate for 3G throughput, and this was only 1.41 Mbps higher than the least performing MNO. Also, it was found that MTN’s download rate peaked at 35.06 Mbps, and this was over 300% of the rate achieved by the fourth rated network in terms of the 4G download throughput metric. The measurement results also revealed that peak usage periods, defined as the hours between 7pm and 11pm, witnessed higher variability in throughput rates than other periods.

Résumé :
In this paper is introduced the Inmarsat Global Area Network (GAN) as backbone to mobile networks. At the end of 2005 Inmarsat launched its BGAN service as the first high speed wireless data solutions with voice available on a global basis. The service is accessed through a portable, broadband satellite transceiver with antenna easy to carry as a laptop. The BGAN network consists constellation of Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) I-4 and I-5 satellites with an optimized ground network, which interconnects variety of terrestrial infrastructures at local BGAN users. This system employs bandwidth efficient modulation and coding techniques, capable of supporting variable bit-rate services and QoS depending on the needs of the application. The BGAN system is satellite component of 3G IMT-2000, specially the Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) standards. It will provide a near-global coverage overlay for the terrestrial networks, giving users service availability beyond the reach of terrestrial IMT-2000 networks. A range of supported terminals, personal devices, portable and mobile units linked with onboard entertainment, communications systems to remote base stations for civilian and military applications and SCADA or M2M are discussed.

Résumé :
Purpose The purpose of the paper is to define the best deployment alternatives for a public protection and disaster relief (PPDR) mobile network service – the implementation alternatives being either a dedicated network, a commercial network or a hybrid of the two network types. The selection criteria are based on the social benefits that the PPDR mobile service is expected to bring to society. The critical parameters are population density and service availability, which both directly relate to the socioeconomic benefits achieved by providing broadband (BB) mobile services in various demographic areas. Design/methodology/approach A causal loop model has been developed to define the socioeconomic benefits of the PPDR network, the parameters being population density, service availability, socioeconomic value of the service and the costs of the network. The network solution alternatives are studied using the Finnish PPDR network as a reference – analysing various areas of the country with differing population densities from remote, rural and more densely populated suburban and urban areas. Findings Socioeconomic value is a common measure for assessing the value of governmental investments; population density has a strong impact on the optimum deployment alternatives as the socioeconomic value is directly proportional to this variable. The flat nationwide fee of the mobile users means that the users are subsidised in sparsely populated areas – and overcharged in densely populated areas. This is the main reason why the commercial network seems to be most feasible in rural areas, whereas the dedicated network works best in urban areas. Based on the case study, the commercial network is most preferable up to the point when the population density reaches 50-125 persons/km2. After that point, the dedicated network becomes more appropriate. Proposals are being made to improve the availability of the commercial networks enabling them to serve as a PPDR network: ensuring priority functionality and a protected power supply; allowing PPDR subscribers the exclusive use of one of the 700 MHz spectrum bands in restricted, critical areas; and extending use of the existing narrowband PPDR network in areas where communication availability is crucial. Originality/value On the one hand, the financing of BB PPDR mobile networks is an unresolved issue in many countries. On the other hand, the ability of commercial BB networks to provide better quality of service is improving, making viable the alternative to subscribe for radio service from a commercial operator. Therefore, the feasibility study on how to provide an optimum mobile BB service for PPDR organisations is of real value at this time.

Résumé :
Resilient networks are the foundation for continued digitalization of societies and industries. Continuous network modernization and coverage build-out has led to several hundred million people becoming new mobile broadband subscribers every year. 5G is scaling faster than any previous mobile generation and we expect 5G subscriptions to reach 1 billion by the end of 2022. In several regions, deployment of 5G standalone networks is also picking up pace, as communications service providers prepare for innovation to address the business opportunities beyond enhanced mobile broadband. A solid digital network infrastructure underpins enterprises’ digital transformation plans, and their new capabilities can be turned into new customer services. As exemplified in this edition, service providers are looking to expand out of pure connectivity into service enablement platforms. Global mobile network data traffic has doubled in the last two years, driven by continuing growth in smartphone usage, mobile broadband and now the digitalization of societies and industries. But traffic is not the only thing that grows. The ongoing war in Europe, as well as increased geopolitical tension in the world, leads to a range of global threats – economic as well as social – that must be navigated. And in our field of networking, the threat landscape calls for constant diligence in keeping ahead with security. You can read more about security in this edition. Managing the continued strong traffic growth while reducing energy consumption is also a top priority. Older technologies are being replaced by continuous build-out of 4G and 5G networks, substantially improving network performance and energy efficiency with each generation. 5G technologies play a key role in modernization, providing multiples of capacity while becoming more energy efficient. Innovative network technologies enable service providers to introduce new services that in turn support societies and enterprises to reduce their carbon emission footprint. In this edition, we share some examples of how 4G and 5G technologies make it possible to unleash the power of IoT connectivity to enhance both enterprises’ business performance and sustainability.

Abstract Interconnection of user-side devices and applications to networks has long been a contentious issue, compounded by the emergence of converged broadband networks. Doctors Jordan and Shaffer offer a “unified” draft statute to ensure users the right to connect devices and applications of their choice while ensuring providers the right to reasonable network management. Analyzing current attachment rules for telephony, cable, MVPDs, mobile services, and the Internet, they propose a single set of rules for operating in a converged broadband network environment. They acknowledge that there are difficult issues involved and try to apply a balancing of interests to resolve them.

Résumé :
Finland, among the first to adopt mobile broadband services, faces rapid growth of mobile data traffic. Therefore, Finnish mobile operators continually invest in their radio access networks to handle this growth, which represents an attractive revenue source. This study presents a demand curve estimate for mobile broadband data traffic, which takes into account the impact of technology evolution on network coverage and capacity. Based on the demand curve and the market equilibrium, this study proposes two strategies for mobile operators: i) reducing the marginal cost of traffic, and ii) changing the pricing structure. Assuming that mobile operators are price-takers (perfect competition), the findings of this study indicate that a continuing reduction of marginal cost is imposed by market forces. However, this policy of cost reduction will inevitably reach its limits. Thus, this study proposes a change in pricing structure from flat-rate tariff to usage-based charging.

Abstract In this paper, we present a software tool that allows preparing econometric analyses aiming at selection of optimal business models for acquisition of broadband mobile networks by PPDR organizations. Such agencies often and often need broadband services to improve operational activities in order to increase the safety, security, and their effectiveness in day-to-day and crisis situations. Upgrade or migration to broadband networks needs careful decisions so as to find a justified trade-off between CAPEX and OPEX. Résumé :
Fifth-generation networks efficiently support and fulfill the demands of mobile broadband and communication services. There has been a continuing advancement from 4G to 5G networks, with 5G mainly providing the three services of enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), massive machine type communication (eMTC), and ultra-reliable low-latency services (URLLC). Since it is difficult to provide all of these services on a physical network, the 5G network is partitioned into multiple virtual networks called “slices”. These slices customize these unique services and enable the network to be reliable and fulfill the needs of its users. This phenomenon is called network slicing. Security is a critical concern in network slicing as adversaries have evolved to become more competent and often employ new attack strategies. This study focused on the security issues that arise during the network slice lifecycle. Machine learning and deep learning algorithm solutions were applied in the planning and design, construction and deployment, monitoring, fault detection, and security phases of the slices. This paper outlines the 5G network slicing concept, its layers and architectural framework, and the prevention of attacks, threats, and issues that represent how network slicing influences the 5G network. This paper also provides a comparison of existing surveys and maps out taxonomies to illustrate various machine learning solutions for different application parameters and network functions, along with significant contributions to the field.

Résumé :
The recall rate and precision rate of current mobile education resource sharing methods are low, and the resource sharing time is long, so a mobile education resource sharing method based on wireless broadband connection is proposed. Ant colony algorithm was used to optimize the focused crawler, the optimized crawler was used to capture the data of mobile education resources and extract the semantic features of the captured data, and the K-means clustering algorithm was used to cluster all the data. Based on the calculation results of network centrality and network density, a wireless broadband connection is used to schedule mobile education resources to complete the sharing of mobile education resources. The experimental results show that the proposed method’s recall rate and precision rate are above 95% and 96%, and the average resource sharing time is 0.63 s. The comprehensive performance of the proposed method is better.

Résumé :
The article is focused on the problem of degrading the signals of broadband 3G / 4G mobile radio access systems in places of subscribers clustering and in so-called “dead zones”. The analysis of the actual principles of building mobile networks has been carried out, the main disadvantages of the approaches to the development of cellular networks have been identified. The current trend of building macro cells in the urban environment has lost its effectiveness due to the increasing frequencies used; it has to be replaced by a fundamentally new way of planning mobile networks. A new principle of providing access to mobile communications “from inside to outside” is proposed, which takes into account the needs of a large number of subscribers in the premises. It is based on setting the maximum number of internal base stations fully meeting the needs of internal network users. Such a distinction will positively affect all subscribers and improve the experience from using the high-quality services of the mobile operators, which will result in increasing the economic performance

Résumé :
The 5G cellular networks are “urban” areas technology in nature, extensively deployed where the user’s density is high to provide very high data rates, coupled with extremely low delays and dealing with very high mobility of users. On the contrary, one-third of people experience a lack of mobile broadband connectivity living in rural zones. These mobile broadband lacks recognized as the main barriers impairing the Sustainable Developing Goals (SDGs) defined by the United Nations. Those that are not currently covered will be unlikely to be covered also soon, as the network operators are not keen to invest in such zones, because of potentially low revenues. While it is confirmed that 5G would meet stringent requirements in urban zones, rural areas still suffer from almost inexistent MBB (Mobile Broadband) coverage, especially in the developing world. The big deal of isolated rural areas, which are sparsely inhabited by low-income populations, is that the classical access using traditional backhaul technologies is a bad solution for operators since it does not ensure a good ROI (Return of Investment).

Résumé :
Broadband Wireless Access is a strategic opportunity for mobile operators which aim to provide connectivity in digital divide areas, in order to accelerate speed of deployment and save in installation costs. This paper presents an innovative approach to access the end user, relying on infrastructural integration of femtocellular technology with existing cabled network. Usually, the adoption of Femtocell Access Points, operating in the licensed cellular bands typically designed to be used in SOHO, improves the radio coverage and the building penetration of the existing mobile networks, based on macrocells. In the proposed solution, the peculiar functionality of femtocells is further improved using a MATV/SMATV cabled infrastructure which facilitates the signal connection inside the building. The potentiality of the solution is even more evident, taking into account the growing interest towards the possible deployment of new mobile technologies, like LTE in both the last portion of the UHF band V and the GSM frequency band, resulting from the re-farming process.

Wireless broadband access networks have been positioning themselves as a good solution for manufacturers and users of IoT (internet of things) devices, due mainly to the high data transfer rate required over terminal devices without restriction of information format. In this work, a review of two Radio over Fiber strategies is presented. Both have excellent performance and even offer the possibility to extend wireless area coverage where mobile networks do not reach or the 802.11 network presents issues. Radio Frequency over Fiber (RFoF) and intermediate Frequency over Fiber (IFoF) are two transmission strategies compatible with the required new broadband services and both play a key role in the design of the next generation integrated optical–wireless networks, such as 5G and Satcom networks, including on RAU (Remote Antenna Unit) new functionalities to improve their physical dimensions, employing a microelectronic layout over nanometric technologies.

The LTE Long Term Evolution highly developed Technology, Handover is the essential function of the mobility of user in cellular networks in Time Division Duplex as well as Frequency Division Duplex. Handover is one of the essential that can affect the [QoS] Quality of Service with Capacity of Mobile Broadband Networks. Within mobile cellular network communication systems, a (spectrum) limited shared resource needs to be shared with all the users, so full duplex communication is achieved. This paper involves studying diverse Hand over delay parameters and also focus on reducing “Hard Handover delay” by minimizing interruption time, activation time, wireless channel accesses time as well as the wireless link transmission delay. Technique is developed in order to reduce the handover delay time in Time Division Duplex network which too reduces the wireless channel access time and the wireless link transmission delay. A novel handover algorithm is developed which would decreases the handover delay time and access time inside mobile network environment.Additional work may be conceded on to obtain enhanced performance and Quality of service in Time Division Duplex mobile network.

Résumé :
Mobile broadband (MBB) is one of the critical goals in fifth-generation (5G) networks due to rising data demand. MBB provides very high-speed internet access with seamless connections. Existing MBB, including third-generation (3G) and fourth-generation (4G) networks, also requires monitoring to ensure good network performance. Thus, performing analysis of existing MBB assists mobile network operators (MNOs) in further improving their MBB networks’ capabilities to meet user satisfaction. In this paper, we analyzed and evaluated the multidimensional performance of existing MBB in Oman. Drive test measurements were carried out in four urban and suburban cities: Muscat, Ibra, Sur and Bahla. This study aimed to analyze and understand the MBB performance, but it did not benchmark the performance of MNOs. The data measurements were collected through drive tests from two MNOs supporting 3G and 4G technologies: Omantel and Ooredoo. Several performance metrics were measured during the drive tests, such as signal quality, throughput (downlink and unlink), ping and handover. The measurement results demonstrate that 4G technologies were the dominant networks in most of the tested cities during the drive test. The average downlink and uplink data rates were 18 Mbps and 13 Mbps, respectively, whereas the average ping and pong loss were 53 ms and 0.9, respectively, for all MNOs.

Résumé :
After describing the beginnings and state of the art of integrated fiber-wireless (FiWi) broadband access networks in great detail, we briefly review recent progress and point to various ongoing research activities, including the design of energy-efficient “green” FiWi access networks, advanced survivability techniques, and integration of wireless and fiber optic sensors, towards realizing adaptable, dependable, and ecoconscious future-proof broadband access networks based on both wireless and shared passive fiber media. Furthermore, we discuss service, application, business, and operation related aspects, which motivate access technology to move into a substantially different direction in the long run than continued capacity provisioning. Given that most 4G cellular mobile network researches so far have been focusing on the achievable performance gains in the wireless front-end only without looking into the details of backhaul implementations and possible backhaul bottlenecks, we identify open key research challenges for FiWi broadband access networks. We explore ways of how they can be deployed across relevant economic sectors other than telecommunications per se, taking major paradigm shifts such as the Third Industrial Revolution, Energy Internet, smart grid, and explosion of mobile data traffic in today’s cellular networks into account.

Résumé :
Abstract: The deployment of 5G mobile communication networks is just getting started right now. There are numerous technologies available today, each capable of fulfilling activities such as enabling voice traffic via voice over IP (VoIP), providing broadband data access in mobile environments, and so on. However, there is a pressing need to implement technology that can bring all of these systems together into a single unified system. Because it is all about smoothly integrating terminals, networks, and applications, 8G presents a solution to this dilemma. In this work, an attempt is made to provide a study of various cellular technologies, such as 4G, 5G, 6G, 7G, and FG, as well as a detailed comparison between them. With the introduction of network virtualization and the implementation of 5G/IoT, mobile networks will become more complicated and offer more diverse services. This raises concerns about a considerable increase in the workload of network operations. Meanwhile, artificial intelligence (AI) is advancing rapidly and is projected to alleviate human resource shortages in a variety of industries. Similarly, the mobile industry is gaining traction in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to network operations in order to improve the efficiency of mobile network operations. This paper will address the idea of using AI technology to network operations and will give various use examples to demonstrate that AI-driven network operations have a bright future. Résumé :
The article substantiates the existence of convergence processes in the field of digitization of countries, taking into account the number of Internet users; people with advanced skills; and indicators of infrastructure (network coverage, population covered by at least a 3G mobile network, population covered by at least a 4G mobile network), access (access to ICT at home, active mobile broadband subscriptions, fixed broadband subscriptions), enablers (fixed broadband over 10 Mbps, mobile data and voice basket, high consumption) and barriers (improved broadband access from 256 kbps to 2 Mbps and from 2 Mbps to 10 Mbps mobile data and voice basket, low consumption) of digital development. The methodological basis for determining the sigma convergence of digitization processes is the coefficient of variation. The values of the coefficient of variation confirmed the high level of convergence between the studied countries in terms of the degree of use of the Internet for conducting digital transactions. The developed econometric model, which describes the influence of statistically significant integral indicators of the national cybersecurity level, ease of doing business, and the anti-money laundering index on the country’s digital development level, made it possible to determine the average trend of dependence on the level of digital development. One hundred four countries were considered for the analysis. The conducted study of the impact of digitalization on economic transformations based on developed quantile regressions made it possible to analyze exactly how the level of digital development for countries with a high level of digitalization and for countries with a low level of digitalization development depends on the value of the national cybersecurity indicator and the ease of doing business, and which countries have the least resistance to the risk factors of their involvement in fraudulent schemes for the purpose of legalizing criminal income.

In this work we aim to provide a comprehensive summary of the most inspiring aspects of 5G mobile networks. In addition, we present the latest findings on the promising 6G technology towards a world of fully digital connectivity. The key determinants are extreme system performance and combinations of requirements for new use cases. We study new performance targets beyond 5G in two stages: 5G+ evolution and new 6G step. Relevant technologies considered too immature for 5G or outside the defined scope are outlined. To justify our vision of future mobile networks, we point out the need for closer collaborations of academia, standardizing bodies, industrial organizations and governments. The contribution strategy is gradual evolution and performance enhancement of mobile communications. Finally, we identify challenges and directions on network technology roadmap toward 6G. Résumé :
Abstract The policy of serving rural America through wireless broadband offers false hope for the future and promotes inefficient use of resources in the present, argues Professor Noam. Rural mobile broadband will never, he says, be a satisfactory substitute for wired (fiber or coaxial) systems for meeting foreseeable needs for increased throughput, creating a new “digital gap.” It is at best a temporary Band-Aid for addressing the increasingly uneven distribution of broadband quality. Eventually its inherently second-rate characteristics will drive the national network to an all-wired infrastructure. It would be better to recognize and address this now.

Résumé :
In the new era, the arrival of 5G has added a lot of fun and beauty to our lives, allowing us to enjoy the happiness brought by the network even more. The 5th Generation mobile technology (5G for short) is a new generation of broadband mobile communication technology with features such as higher speed, lower latency, and massive connectivity. Moreover, this is a network infrastructure that, in fact, realizes the interconnections among humans, computer machines, and sensors/things, i.e., Internet of things. The world can now be characterized as a whole global village. The 5 G, mobile edge computing networks, and cloud-edge collaborative computing allow us to communicate and share information on the cloud networks, allowing us to better understand the global village. Based on cloud-edge collaborative computing for 5G edge networks, this study builds a task scheduling algorithm, which will help us to check network defects and make better use of the 5G technology to serve customers. Experimental results demonstrate the extra efficiency of the proposed algorithm over the closest rivals.

Résumé :
This study compared the CAPEX requirements for a television white space (TVWS) based broadband network and that of deploying the UMTS based mobile broadband networks to deliver broadband connectivity in areas with sparse population which characterize most of Tanzania rural. Like many developing countries, Tanzania has low Internet penetration, with penetration of just over 46% when multiple subscriptions are taken into account. The affected communities are mostly rural due to low population densities which make deployment of the mobile broadband to be much expensive in terms of costs. This limits the economic development potential in these areas given that the broadband connectivity and services is a key driver for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR or Industry 4.0) and modern digital economy. Comparative between the coverage capability of the TVWS and UMTS family of standards by considering the number of base transceiver stations (BTS) is conducted to cover a specific geographic area for three different radio operating environments namely hilly, undulating and flat terrain landscapes. The broadband connectivity data rate is defined at the receiver rate of 2 Mbps or above, and used to determine the number of BTS required for the two technologies. Results show that introducing the TVWS as a middle mile solution, cuts the number of UMTS BTS required to serve the same population by 68%, 66.7%, and 75% for the three canonical environments respectively.

Résumé :
This paper presents a concise overview of current public safety communication networks known as LMR (Land Mobile Radio) and emerging LTE- (Long-Term Evolution-) based broadband public safety networks to be deployed in the 700 MHz band. A broadband nationwide network for public safety based on LTE is inevitable where shared or dedicated types of LTE-based public safety networks are possible. Current LTE services do not meet mission-critical requirements and several enhancements have been defined by 3GPP to address this in Releases 12 and 13. First responders are familiar with LMR and consider it to be a reliable technology with massive deployment everywhere. Therefore, it is expected that LMR will continue to exist alongside any new LTE-based broadband public safety network. Recent LTE releases (particularly Release 15) addressed the LMR-LTE interoperability issue and described comprehensive interworking facilities. New and upcoming features and services of LTE in Releases 14 and 15, such as mission-critical data, mission-critical video, and aerial user equipments, are also directly applicable to public safety. The paper endeavours to provide a quick yet meaningful review of all these issues. It also offers a look ahead at the new and rapidly advancing virtualization technologies, such as software-defined radio access network, and radio access network slicing, as enablers for future public safety networks.

Résumé :
Healthy People 2020 (HP2020) aims to improve population health outcomes through several objectives, including health communication and health information technology. We used 7 administrations of the Health Information National Trends Survey to examine HP2020 goals toward access to the Internet through broadband and mobile devices (N = 34 080). We conducted descriptive analyses and obtained predicted marginals, also known as model-adjusted risks, to estimate the association between demographic characteristics and use of mobile devices. The HP2020 target (7.7% of the US population) for accessing the Internet through a cellular network was surpassed in 2014 (59.7%), but the HP2020 target (83.2%) for broadband access fell short (63.8%). Sex and age were associated with accessing the Internet through a cellular network throughout the years (Wald F test, P <.05). The increase in the percentage of people accessing the Internet through mobile devices presents an opportunity for technology-based health interventions that should be explored.

Résumé :
The increasing use of wireless communications in mobile devices starts a new level of resource management. Users with mobile devices accessing wireless hot spots are a commonplace, and, thus, their management is becoming more important. Therefore, efficient utilization of radio resource becomes a key point in the design of broadband systems. From the view of the development of radio resource management, current technologies have quite good performance and high efficiency when the category of service is single. However, when multiple services take place simultaneously, the system has to emphasize on some certain kinds of services and degrade the performance of others. Moreover, the wireless network is not able to detect collision and monitor the channel status as is the wire line network, which makes it more difficult to design the management scheme. This paper introduces and analyzes current main technologies of radio resource management, discusses the key technical points on designing the scheme, and then offers a new proposal of uplink radio resource allocation scheme in broadband systems. Based on the detailed illustration of the algorithm, a simulation system is established to verify it, which is adapted to the typical situation of broadband wireless communication systems. The theory analysis and the simulation results show that the new method successfully resolves the uplink bandwidth allocation problem for the simultaneous multiple services, satisfies the different requirements of delay and bandwidth of different services, and also reduces the protocol wasting and transmission delay.

Résumé :
The use of emergency telemedicine applications at the site of a medical emergency event provides a multitude of benefits, both from the perspective of the patient and the emergency care providers. Innovations in rich multimedia telemedicine solutions further enhances the aforementioned benefits, but places more stringent quality-of-service demands on the underlying mobile networks. In this paper, the authors present a proposal for a complementary solution for rapid provisioning of mobile broadband data connectivity for emergency telemedicine applications in indoor environments. The proposed solution relies on the exploitation of existing femtocellular network resources available at emergency sites in various residential building types. Simulations carried out for a UMTS network environment demonstrate significant improvements in terms of achievable throughput for the emergency mobile terminal device when access to UMTS Home Node Bs available in the building is allowed for emergencies compared to macro Node B access only.
