SUMMARY First Peter contains a number of themes that demonstrate the author’s burden for the Church. The letter is known for its instructions to slaves, husbands and wives, for its views on suffering, on social justice and on leadership in the Church. Yet this article suggests that the social engagement of 1 Peter also incorporates his missional thinking. The article takes up challenges from various contemporary scholars to analyse the question how the theology of 1 Peter informs this social engagement. It offers a missional reading of the letter which shows to what extent it invites the readers to participate in the mission of God and, more specifically, how Peter’s missional strategy works. Specific attention is paid to the household codes. After analysing the implications of re-telling the story of God’s mission in Christ for Peter’s audience, and evaluating the consequences of their Christian identity for participating in mission, the article tackles the household codes by assessing the extent to which they invite readers to change the world around them. At the end there are some conclusions for our time.

This dissertation makes a study of the contacts between a few Chinese literati and Jesuits as well as the influence that Chinese literati’s social network exerted through their contacts with Jesuits in the late Ming Dynasty. About the Chinese literati’s social network, three important types of interpersonal relationships have been paid special attention to, which are: tongnian (同年, graduates of the imperial examination in the same year), shisheng (师生, master and disciple) and tongxiang (同乡, fellow townsmen). All these three types of interpersonal relationships were generated from, or at least somewhat related to the imperial examinations (keju, 科举), the basic link from which most of the Chinese intellectuals’ social relationships came from. As for the specific research figures, the dissertation deals with five Metropolitan Graduates in the two consecutive sessions of the year 1589 and 1592, i.e. Li Rihua (李日华, 1565-1635), Xie Zhaozhe (谢肇淛, 1567-1624), Feng Yingjing (冯应京, 1555-1606), Cao Yubian (曹于汴, 1558-1634) and Jiao Hong (焦竑, 1540-1619) since they represented four different types of attitudes towards Jesuits and western religion and culture, in the meantime, in their social network which played an important role in affecting their attitudes towards western learnings, all of the three types of interpersonal relationships tongnian, shisheng and tongxiang count a lot. Although the interpersonal relationships of the above five Metropolitan Graduates seemed to be independent of each other, in fact, they could be connected into a larger social network, which contains several other tongnian who belonged to the same sessions of 1589 and 1592 as well as some other literati who had frequent and close contacts with the Metropolitan Graduates of these two sessions. All the figures, directly or indirectly, had connections with each other mainly through the interpersonal relationships of tongnian, shisheng and tongxiang, thus forming an organic whole. This kind of officialdom interpersonal network in late Ming Dynasty represented by the group of Metropolitan Graduates in 1589 and 1592 brought both opportunities and challenges to the spread of Catholicism and other western learnings in China: those scholar-officials who held positive attitudes would influence the others in their interpersonal network and vice versa. Therefore, studying the contacts between Chinese scholar-officials and Jesuits especially under the framework of the former’s interpersonal network will definitely help understand better the cultural communication between China and the West during late Ming and early Qing dynasties, hence further provide reference significance for today's cultural exchanges between the two sides.

Nyuyki, Peter Siysi. « A missional approach to the traditional social associations of the NSO’ people of Cameroon ». Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/59094.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This research deals with Christian missions and African cultures. It focuses on the traditional social associations of the Nso’ people of Cameroon. The main problem the research addresses is that missionaries who came to Nso’ mostly imposed their culture on the Nso’ and by extension Africa in the name of Christianity. What this research refers to as traditional social associations is what the missionaries prejudicially termed secret societies. The research argues that these traditional social associations are not secret societies. They are rather custodians and preservers of Nso’ culture. Their activities are largely social, and revolve around eating and drinking. The research compares the case of Nso’ with missionary endeavours in North Africa: Egypt, Axum and Nubia and in Sub-Saharan Africa. In all these areas, the following commonalities are found: insufficient interest in the indigenous languages, syncretism, the tendency of mission to always link with colonialism and to despise the African worldview. In all these areas, the result was conflict between mission and indigenous culture, and conflict within the traditional cultures. In order to appropriately engage contexts in Africa that have traditional social associations like Nso’, the researcher proposes the use of an integrated missional approach. By integrated missional approach the researcher means a perspective that takes theology, anthropology, sociology and culture seriously when carrying out the mission of God (missio Dei). The researcher presents an integrated missional approach that is constructed in the light of contextualisation. This approach is based on Niebuhr’s typology that is described in his book Christ and culture and as analysed by Kraft in his Anthropology for Christian witness. The following sociological theories: functionalism, conflict theory, phenomenology and social identity theory are used to discuss how certain realities operate in human communities. Using content analysis as his predominant methodological approach to the data collected, the researcher concludes that culture has been, is, and will continue to be the main vehicle for mission. Hence, the traditional social associations of the Nso’ people, which form the core culture of Nso’ need to be seen as an opportunity for evangelisation. The research shows that the missionary era in Nso’ in particular and Africa in general has ended and that the era in which the local church is finding its own identity is underway.

This research is built in two parts. The first, entitled "Support in a context of persistent crisis", specifies the sociological evolution of young people and the conditions for setting up a structure intended for their social and professional integration. The second part, named: "Taking charge of the support process for young people by the advisers of the Mission Locale de Paris" describes support situations and shows how the advisers (CISP) use the devices of the Local Mission to integrate socially and professionally beneficiaries with very varied profiles. It also shows that the profession of CISP requires specific expertise and skills. However, although their barriers to employability have been reduced or eliminated, some people do not gain access to employment. According to the CISP, the beneficiaries encounter many difficulties in their integration process, including discrimination. It seemed important to us to deal with this question in the third part entitled: "The Counselor on social and professional integration in the face of discrimination: What support?". The purpose of this research is to show that the path of support for young people in social and professional integration is done through specific programs, a dedicated place - the local mission - with the help of a professional capable of carrying it out. - the counselor. Building the integration of young people as a social fact through support means entering a field of analysis that requires the mobilization of a theoretical framework situated at the crossroads of the sociology of youth, the sociology of public policies, the sociology of professional groups, the sociology of organizations, the sociology of expertise and the sociology of discrimination. This theoretical conception clarifies and organizes reality by bringing out the relevant questions ensuring a precise understanding of the phenomenon. It is not a thesis in administrative or legal science but rather in human sciences and specifically in sociology, which allows us to identify as much as possible a knowledge of the mode of support for active integration, integrating young people into society. and the world of work in a period of persistent crisis

Liu, Esther Ruth. « The missionary translator : expanding notions of translation through the colonial mission practices of the SMEP Basutoland and Barotseland missions (1857-1904) ». Thesis, Cardiff University, 2016. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/99638/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In this thesis the figure of the colonial Christian missionary is put forward as a translator - in terms of both interlingual translation (translation proper) and a more metaphorical and intercultural translation process (mission-translation). It takes the example of SMEP (Société des Missions Évangéliques de Paris) missionary, François Coillard (1834-1904), his wife, Christina, and indigenous missionaries such as Asser Sehahabane and Aaron Mayoro, and posits these historical individuals and their translation practices as sources which shed new light on current understandings of the nature of translation and the ontology of the translator. Through the discussion of the famous French protestant missionary, it deconstructs the (in)visibility binary in translation studies as well as the singularity of the translator, and puts forward a spectral collaborative translator-presence. From this point on, the thesis demonstrates that translation proper is an incarnational, bodily act which goes far beyond ink on a page. As it considers François’ wife, Christina Coillard née Mackintosh, and other female missionaries, it re-evaluates the site of the domestic as vital in translation, posits hospitality as a multidirectional facet of translation, and completion as the goal of translation. Indigenous missionary involvement then reveals translation to be made up of relationships of trust and of multiple movements. And Coillard’s photographs, seen as and in translation, demonstrate the many layers of context and significance at work in translation. Whilst colonial missionaries are overlooked translator-figures in studies of missiology, colonial history, and translation, in this thesis, a closer look at mission-translation reveals that these individuals are significant sources for the expansion of notions of both mission and translation.

AbstractThis chapter explores the evolution of the Mughal and Portuguese geopolitical strategies that paved the way for the second (1591–1592) and third (1595–1775) Jesuit missions to the Mughal court. This chapter also analyses the reactions of the members of the second mission to Akbar’s religious policies and millenarian positions, as well as the diplomatic activities and proselytising strategies of the third Jesuit mission initiated in 1595. This chapter will be focused on the top-down strategy implemented by Jerónimo Xavier and the popular mission developed by Manoel Pinheiro in Lahore. Special attention is given to the roles played by the missionaries and their converts and patrons in the empire’s social, political and economic life, as well as the capacity of the Jesuit missionaries to reach different social groups.

Résumé :
The Government of Tamil Nadu (GoTN) has prioritised the full sanitation chain, including the strengthening of septage management as an economical and sustainable complement to networkbased sewerage systems. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) is supporting the GoTN to achieve the Sanitation Mission of Tamil Nadu through the Tamil Nadu Urban Sanitation Support Programme (TNUSSP). TNUSSP Phase I (2015-2018) was designed to support GoTN and selected cities in making improvements along the entire urban sanitation chain. In the second phase (2018– 2020), TNUSSP seeks to go one step further and integrate a gender and social inclusion (GSI) perspective within its interventions at two sites – the city of Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), and the two town panchayats (TPs) of Periyanaicken-Palayam (PNP) and Narasimhanaicken-Palayam (NNP) in Coimbatore district – along the urban sanitation cycle and in its support provided at the State level.

Vlaicu, Razvan, et Philip Keefer. Employee Trust and Performance Constraints in Public Sector Organizations. Inter-American Development Bank, septembre 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0004456.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Theory suggests that employee trust is key to productivity in organizations, but empirical evidence documenting links between trust and constraints on performance is scarce. This paper analyzes self-collected data on public sector employees from eighteen Latin American countries and finds that individual-level trust is relevant to three types of performance factors. First, high-trust employees are more willing to collaborate and share information with coworkers and are more supportive of technological innovation. Second, high-trust respondents have different perceptions of organizational constraints: they are less concerned with low staff quality or lack of discretion to innovate, and more concerned with staff shortages. Third, trust in coworkers is associated with stronger mission motivation. Instrumental variable strategies based on the transmission of trust through social and professional channels account for potential sources of endogeneity. A survey experiment on preferences for social distancing policies provides further evidence that trust enhances mission motivation: employee policy preferences align better with the implied government policy when their trust in the public sector is higher.

Futch Ehrlich, Valerie A. Leadership Development as a Lever for Social Change : An Evaluation Framework and Impact Storytelling Approach. Center for Creative Leadeship, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.35613/ccl.2022.2050.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Founded with the mission to “advance the understanding, practice, and development of leadership for the benefit of society worldwide”, the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) has served both the social and commercial sectors for over 50 years. Many of our programs across corporate, government, philanthropic, and social (e.g., NGOS, nonprofits, K12 institutions, higher education institutions, and population health organizations) sectors have the goal of improving outcomes for individual leaders and groups, and extending those outcomes to create impact at the organizational, community, or societal level. Our clients often aspire for large and transformational impact. They are interested in telling stories of impact – both immediate and sustained – that trace the power of their investment and its ability to result in improved outcomes for individuals, organizations, and communities. However, it’s often difficult or impossible to represent such impact without intentional planning and measurement. Using the idea of levers as a metaphor, we present a pathway for how leadership development across contexts can lead to larger scale impact, with examples from some of our current efforts to demonstrate this impact. We also provide a typology of stories that can be useful for communicating complex impact pathways. The typology provides metaphors for understanding the variety of layers of impact that contribute to societal change. Our work in support of this framework is continuously evolving, as we are learning, improving our measures, and identifying opportunities for increased evaluation efforts.
