Résumé :
Recently the recipes to achieve the high-Q subwavelength resonances in an isolated dielectric disk have been reported based on avoided crossing (anticrossing) of the TE resonances under variation of the aspect ratio of the disk. In a silicon disk that recipe gives an enhancement of the Q factor by one order of magnitude. In the present paper we present the approach based on engineering of the spherical Mie resonances with high orbital index in two coaxial disks by two-fold avoided crossing of the resonant modes of the disks. At the first step we select the resonant modes of single disk which are degenerate because of the opposite symmetry. Approaching of the second disk removes this degeneracy because of interaction between the disks. As a result at certain distances we realize the hybridized anti-bonding resonant modes whose morphology becomes close to the spherical Mie resonant mode with high orbital index. Respectively the Q factor of the anti-bonding resonant mode can be enhanced by three orders of magnitude compared to the case of single disk.

Résumé :
In this paper, a tunable dielectric metamaterial absorber with temperature-based vanadium dioxide (VO2) is proposed. In contrast to previous studies, both the metal phase of VO2 and the semiconductor phase are applied to manipulate the Mie resonant modes in the dielectric cubes. By embedding VO2 in the main resonant structure, the control over Mie resonant modes in dielectric metamaterials is realized. Each resonant mode is analyzed through field distribution and explains why the phase switch of VO2 could affect the absorbance spectrum. This use of tunable materials could create another new methodology for the manipulation of the Mie resonance-based dielectric cubes and make them closer in essence to isotropic metamaterials.

Résumé :
Abstract Spherical particles both dielectric and metallic are essential building blocks in nanophotonics. During the recent rapid development of Mie-tronic — nanophotonics devices heavily using various features of the Mie-resonances — the deep fundamental investigation of the eigenmodes of such particles by using the novel tools is still relevant and currently important. Moreover, eigenmodes of a sphere are closely related to the Vector Spherical Harmonics (VSH) which are widely used in the multipolar decomposition to analyze less symmetric structures. In this work, we study in detail the canonical spin and angular momenta (AM), helicity, and other properties of the eigenmodes of dielectric (nondispersive) and metallic (dispersive) spheres. We show that the canonical momentum density of the AM is quantized and has a close relation to the quantum picture of a single photon. Our work provides a solid platform for future studies and applications of the AM transfer from near fields of spherical particles to the matter in its vicinity.

Résumé :
Summary We consider integrals of products of Bessel functions and of spherical Bessel functions, combined with a Gaussian factor guaranteeing convergence at infinity. These integrals arise in wave and quantum mechanical scattering problems of open systems containing cylindrical or spherical scatterers, particularly when those problems are considered in the framework of complex resonant modes. Explicit representations are obtained for the integrals, building on those in the 1992 paper by McPhedran, Dawes and Scott. Attention is paid to those sums with a distributive part arising as the Gaussian tends towards the unit function. In this limit, orthogonality and normalisability of complex modes are investigated.

Résumé :
We elucidate the role of the mode coupling of the Mie resonances in all-dielectric metamaterials to ensure a negative effective index at terahertz frequencies. We perform a study as a function of the lattice period and of the frequency overlapping of the modes of resonance. We show that negative effective refractive index requires sufficiently strong mode coupling and that for even more strong mode coupling, the first two modes of Mie resonances are degenerate; the effective refractive index is then undetermined. We also show that it is possible to obtain near-zero, or even null, effective index with a judicious adjustment of the mode coupling. Further, we discuss the mode coupling effect with hybridization in metamaterials.

Résumé :
We study behavior of resonant modes with a distance between two identical dielectric cylinders and disks. We reveal two basic scenarios of evolution of resonances with the distance between the cylinders. For larger distances and respectively weaker interaction of particles the resonances are bound around the Mie resonances and evolve by spiral way. For shorter distances and respectively stronger interaction the resonances bypass the Mie resonances. Both scenarios demonstrate considerable enhancement of the Q factor compared to the case of isolated particle.

Résumé :
We implement externally excited ZnO Mie resonators in a framework of a generalized Hubbard Hamiltonian to investigate the lifetimes of excitons and exciton-polaritons out of thermodynamical equilibrium. Our results are derived by a Floquet-Keldysh-Green’s formalism with Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) and a second order iterative perturbation theory solver (IPT). We find that the Fano resonance which originates from coupling of the continuum of electronic density of states to the semiconductor Mie resonator yields polaritons with lifetimes between 0.6 ps and 1.45 ps. These results are compared to ZnO polariton lasers and to ZnO random lasers. We interpret the peaks of the exciton-polariton lifetimes in our results as a sign of gain narrowing which may lead to stable polariton lasing modes in the single excited ZnO Mie resonator. This form of gain may lead to polariton random lasing in an ensemble of ZnO Mie resonators in the non-equilibrium.

The control of the spontaneous emission of quantum emitters is of fundamental importance for the development of future quantum technologies. Such applications rely on the manipulation of atoms, molecules, or "artificial" atoms, as elementary sources of light, and on the exploitation of the quantum nature of the emitted light, single photons. In parallel to the recent developments in nanofabrication techniques and nanotechnologies, theoretical understanding of the fundamental interaction mechanisms between quantum emitters and their environment also becomes more and more essential. In this thesis, we tackle three different paradigms of the spontaneous emission phenomenon, all dealing with modifications of the spontaneous emission induced the environment: the problem of monitored spontaneous emission, the interaction between quantum emitters and optical resonances supported by nearby nanostructures and the remote interaction between quantum emitters and metasurfaces. We present and deal with different formalisms to model such different situations, interfacing different fields of physics like quantum optics and nanophotonics. In each of these situations, we illustrate with realistic theoretical predictions how the spontaneous emission is modified. For each case, for provide with experimental proposals for future confirmations of these predictions, to bring a better understanding and control over these fundamental processes

The possibility to control the electronic properties on-demand on an ultrafast time scale represents one of the most exciting challenges towards the realization of new generation photonic and electronic devices. Triggered by this, in the last decades the research activity focused its attention to different solid-state platforms. Among all, dielectric nanostructures (and metamaterials) and correlated materials represent the most promising candidate for the implementation of devices endowed by new functionalities. Apart from the specific features making dielectrics more suitable for photonic applications and correlated materials for electronic devices, both categories exhibit new functionalities if subjected to an external stimulus in the form of excitation light pulses shorter than the relaxation timescale of the internal degrees of freedom of the system. Indeed, the out-of-equilibrium state achieved upon photoexcitation exhibits electronic and optical properties highly different from those at equilibrium. Therefore, the aim of this thesis work consists in the development of new methods and experimental approaches capable to induce, measure, and control new functionalities in complex materials on an ultrafast time scale.

Résumé :
A system consisting of a sphere sitting on a clean mirror was modeled as a two particle system: the real sphere and its image sphere, treating the mirror as a conducting plane. When the system was irradiated with a plane-polarized collimated laser beam with varying angles of incidence, the scattering from each particle was assumed to follow Mie's solution for light scattering by a sphere. Phase difference between the scattering by the real sphere and the one by its image sphere was assessed by the geometry of the model. The far field solutions from each of the spheres were added to yield a phase dependent intensity function. Another model assumed no phase correlation between the two and the intensities from each spheres were added. Also discussed is the Double Interaction Mode, which takes the mirror-sphere separation into consideration. These theoretical results were converted to Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Functions (BRDF). The theoretical as well as the empirical surface scattering from a good quality optical surface was introduced. The BRDF values thus calculated were added to the background scattering by the mirror since no interaction was assumed between the spheres and the rough metallic surface of the mirror. The test sample was prepared with polystyrene spheres with the nominal diameter of 0.984 μm on a high quality aluminum mirror. The BRDF data from this sample with 6328Å and 4416Å were compared with the one obtained with the model described above. The comparison strongly indicated that there existed no phase correlation between the scatterings by the two spheres. Determination of the sphere size and practical applicability for estimating the sphere number density on the surface are also discussed.

Résumé :
We report on a Raman microprobe technique where micron-sized solid particles or liquid droplets are trapped in stable optical potential wells using only the force of radiation pressure from a continuous gas laser. We demonstrate this technique with Raman spectra from spherical as well as nonspherical single particles of sizes ranging between ~5 and 40μm. The particles are stably supported by a vertically directed focused TEM00-modecwargon-ion laser of ~500 mW. From the optically levitated single microparticles we took the light-scattering spectra, which, in the case of spherical particles, show pronounced structural resonances. The observed resonances could be assigned by using the well-known Lorenz-Mie formalism, and a good correlation is found between experimental and theoretically predicted spectra. It was further found that, for particular liquid droplets, quite high-order numbers of the natural modes of oscillation of a sphere play a dominant role. We describe the intensities of the resonances in the Raman-Mie spectra particularly through the volume averaged internal field intensity. We also show that the internal angle-averaged electric field intensity is localized near, but not confined to, the sphere surface.

Résumé :
The breakup, penetration, droplet size and size distribution of a Jet A-1 fuel in air crossflow has been investigated with focus given to the impact of surrounding air pressure. Data has been collected by Particle Doppler Phased Analyzer (PDPA), Mie-Scattering with high speed photography augmented by laser sheet, and Mie-Scattering with ICCD Camera augmented by nano-pulse lamp. Nozzle orifice diameter, do, was 0.508 mm and nozzle orifice length to diameter ratio, lo/do, was 5.5. Air crossflow velocities ranged from 29.57 to 137.15 m/s, air pressures from 2.07 to 9.65 bar and temperature held constant at 294.26 K. Fuel flow was governed to provide a range of fuel/air momentum flux ratio q from 5 to 25 and Weber number from 250 to 1000. From the results, adjusted correlation of the mean drop size has been suggested using drop size data measured by PDPA as follows; (1)D0D32=0.267Wea0.44q0.08ρlρa0.30μlμa-0.16This correlation agrees well and shows roles of aerodynamic Weber number, Wea, momentum flux ratio, q, and density ratio, ρl/ρa. Change of the breakup regime map with respect with surrounding air pressure has been observed and revealed that the boundary between each breakup modes can be predicted by a transformed correlation induced from above correlation. In addition, the spray trajectory for the maximum Mie-scattering intensity at each axial location downstream of injector was extracted from averaged Mie-scattering images. From these results correlations with the relevant parameters including q, x/do, density ratio, viscosity ratio, and Weber number are made over a range of conditions. According to spray trajectory at the maximum Mie-scattering intensity, the effect of surrounding air pressure becomes more important in the farfield. On the other hand, effect of aerodynamic Weber number is more important in the nearfield.

Résumé :
The first-mile, last-mile problem is a significant deterrent for potential transit riders, especially in suburban neighborhoods with low density. Transit agencies have typically sought to solve this problem by adding parking spaces near transit stations and adding stops to connect riders to fixed-route transit. However, these measures are often only short-term solutions. In the last few years, transit agencies have tested whether new mobility services, such as ridehailing, ridesharing, and microtransit, can offer fast, reliable connections to and from transit stations. However, there is limited research that evaluates the potential impacts of these projects. Concurrently, there is growing interest in the future of automated vehicles (AVs) and the potential of AVs to solve this first-mile problem by reducing the cost of providing these new mobility services to promote access to transit. This paper expands upon existing research to model the simulate the travel and revenue impacts of a fleet of automated vehicles that provide transit access services in the San Francisco Bay Area offered over a range of fares. The model simulates a fleet of AVs for first-mile transit access at different price points for three different service models (door-to-door ridehailing and ridesharing and meeting point ridesharing services). These service models include home-based drop-off and pick-up for single passenger service (e.g., Uber and Lyft), home-based drop-off and pick-up for multi-passenger service (e.g., microtransit), and meeting point multi-passenger service (e.g., Via).

Hajdini, Ina. Mis-specified Forecasts and Myopia in an Estimated New Keynesian Model. Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, mars 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.26509/frbc-wp-202203r.

Résumé :
The paper considers a New Keynesian framework in which agents form expectations based on a combination of autoregressive mis-specified forecasts and myopia. The proposed expectations formation process is shown to be consistent with all three empirical facts on consensus inflation forecasts. However, while mis-specified forecasts can be both sufficient and necessary to match all three facts, myopia alone is neither. The paper then derives the general equilibrium solution consistent with the proposed expectations formation process and estimates the model with likelihood-based Bayesian methods, yielding three novel results: (i) macroeconomic data strongly prefer a combination of autoregressive mis-specified forecasting rules - of the VAR(1) or AR(1) type - and myopia over other alternatives; (ii) no strong evidence is found in favor of VAR(1) forecasts over simple AR(1) rules; and (iii) frictions such as habit in consumption, which are typically necessary for models with full-information rational expectations, are significantly less important, because the proposed expectations generate substantial internal persistence and amplification to exogenous shocks. Simulated inflation expectations data from the estimated general equilibrium model reflect the three empirical facts on forecasting data.
