İn this work presents epistolary sources in the Ottoman language from the collection of the firmans of the Ottoman sultans and viziers in the name of the Kaitag Utsmians. The Fund of Oriental Manuscripts of the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the DPhIC RAS contains microfilms of these firms, obtained from the National Library of France, where the Utsmi collection came in the second half of the 20th century. Some copies of the firmans of the Ottoman leaders in the name of the Kaitag Utsmians are also available in the book depositories of Georgia. They were published by Georgian scientists, with transcript and translation into Georgian and Russian. A comparative analysis of the documents revealed that the Georgian collection is more complete than the Parisian one, the collections contain copies made by different authors, there are textual inconsistencies and discrepancies in the dating of the firms. In this article, we present facsimiles of Ottoman firmans in the names of the Dagestan rulers of the second half of the 15th century. and the first half of the XX century. Kaitag utsmievs of Ahmad Khan, Khamzat Khan and Ustar Khan. We present their content, providing the appropriate comments. The documents are of high scientific value, shedding light on the policy of the Ottomans in the Caucasus, on the historical events associated with the liberation struggle of the Dagestan peoples, the policy of the Dagestan rulers. Indeed, quite recently, the struggle of the Dagestani highlanders with the Iranian shah, which went on for several years, was successfully completed. The decisive victory over Nadir Shah was won when, in the fight against the enemy in 1741-1742. The united forces of Avars, Kaitags, Akushins, Kumukhs, Rutuls and other Dagestan peoples took part. Firmen convey the atmosphere of historical events, the praise of valor addressed to the recalcitrant mountaineers is heard more and more often, the tone of the letters of the Ottomans, promising endless favors in exchange for obedience to the Muslim Caliph, is replaced by a call to receive retribution from the Almighty for the sacred struggle against foreign invaders.

Abstract In 1973, recent PhD and newly-affiliated Research Associate at the University of Texas at Austin, Robert W. Stookey, made microfilm copies of a number of Arabic manuscripts in Yemen on a variety of subjects. Stookey was not himself a manuscripts expert, but was instead invested in preserving and making available for research the intellectual tradition of Yemen, a country in which he had spent considerable time as a researcher and member of the Foreign Service. Stookey’s microfilms were accessioned to the UT Libraries’ Middle East collection in 1980, and digitized starting in 2014. This article discusses the importance of the Stookey microfilms as an early post-custodial arrangement for preserving, making accessible, and ultimately recovering the intellectual heritage of Zaydism in Yemen. Through their inclusion in the Zaydi Manuscript Tradition portal, these microfilms will be made freely and openly available for anyone to discover and study on the Internet. While the destruction of life, property, and cultural memory continues in Yemen, this is an example of a way for North American library collections to help to recover Yemen’s precious heritage.

This article describes an interdisciplinary project set up for the collection of manuscripts produced during the period of ca. 1780–1830 by craftsmen and peasants along the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia in Finland (Ostrobothnian Mystics, literature and cultural history collection, the Finnish Literature Society). We briefly describe the nature of the material, discuss the specific aspects of the manuscript project which connected two fields of expertise – that of an archive researcher and a user of the particular collection – and conclude by arguing for the urgency of finding new ways and resources to preserve fragile items – both texts and material artefacts – in a specific field.

As part of the research project of the RSCF No. 22-18-00295 “Electronic library of Arabographic manuscripts from archival, library, museum and private collections of Russia”, the authors conducted an archeographic expedition in the summer of 2022 to the Kayakent, Akhtynsky and Suleiman-Stalsky districts of the Republic of Dagestan with the aim to identify private and mosque collections of manuscripts and books for their subsequent description and digitization. Two private collections, belonging to K.M. Kamalov and Sh.Yu. Magomedov, were identified in the Kayakent district of Dagestan. They comprise around forty volumes of manuscripts and early printed books, as well as handwritten documents: assembly records, letters, registration of legal transactions, etc. Both collections have a common origin and are fragments of collections belonging to local religious figures: the last pre-revolutionary qadi of the village of Alhajikent, Qadi-Agay and his relatives Abuzar-qadi, local alim of the first half of the 19th century, Abdul Wahab Sheikh and Sheikh Mirza. The part of the collection of Sh.Yu. Magomedov was lost in the 1980s. The content of the collections is mainly represented by works in Arabic in the fields of grammar and stylistics of the Arabic language, Muslim law, dogmatics, occult sciences. Due to the loss of its part, the Sh.Yu. Magomedov’s collection covers the period between 1747-1748 to the first third of the 19th century, while in the collection of Kamalov K.M. there are earlier copies of manuscripts, which, according to paleographic characteristics, can be attributed to the middle of the 17th century. Our paper focuses on the few manuscripts in the Turkic languages, identified in the collections.

The “Bukharian Collection” of Vladimir A. Ivanov included dozens of Jewish manuscripts. They came to the Asian Museum in St. Petersburg in 1915, and Alexander A. Freiman systematized some of them – in Judeo-Persian only – by 1918. Over the past century, there have been several (re-)inventories, so nowadays one cannot rely on those obsolete publications, working with these monuments. Part of the provenance has been lost. Basing on Ivanov’s archive and the inventory books of different years, this article is an attempt to update the information on all Jewish manuscripts acquired in Bukhara. The Aramaic and Hebrew manuscripts are new to the scientific circulation, the provenance of the Judeo-Persian manuscripts is clarified. Ivanov’s personal notes for each manuscript are scarce. Nevertheless, they are the primary source about the manuscripts, and today his “notebook” on the “Collection” is kept in the Archive of Orientalists of the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS. Using Ivanov’s list of manuscripts and their description by Freiman, as well as the current inventory, I managed to restore the provenance of almost all monuments. Some last Hebrew manuscripts in this list are particularly difficult to identify, while other monuments within the Jewish fund have been erroneously attributed to the “Collection” for a long time. Only one manuscript from Bukhara has remained unidentified. Checking the rest of the manuscripts for Ivanov’s notes at the margins in his “notebook” helped to match and connect the archival data with the source data of the manuscripts.

This research examines concentration and similarity in the first name distributions of African Americans and whites resident in Mississippi in 1910. Data are drawn from the Public Use Sample of the 1910 Census, with names added from microfilm copies of original Census manuscripts. We find little difference in the degree of concentration of the name distributions and only modest dissimilarity in name choice. Multivariate analysis using age as a proxy for period of name assignment (birth cohort) indicates that racial differentiation in name choice increased over the period 1870 to 1910 primarily as a result of changes in the name choices of whites. We discuss these results in conjunction with the recent work of Lieberson and Bell (1992) on contemporary racial differences in naming patterns. Lieberson and Bell (1992) argue that African Americans in the contemporary period emphasize group differences by choosing “African” or “African sounding” names. In Mississippi in the period between the abolition of slavery and 1910, we argue that whites distanced themselves from African Americans by choosing increasingly the “whitest” names (e.g., those disproportionately chosen by whites). Changing naming patterns are not orchestrated group responses. Instead, they reflect emergent cultural responses to fundamental social change.

In the course of work in the manuscript collection of the Karakalpak Institute of Humanities (Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan), a collection of manuscripts, lithographs and old-printed books was identified. It consists mainly of new arrivals (the so-called “Chimbay collection” at the place of origin of most of the manuscripts, from the city of Chimbay, formerly Shakhtemir, now in the Republic of Karakalpakstan). According to the information of the Institute's employees, Uzak Rakhmatullayev (born in 1920 in the territory of the modern Chimbay district of Karakalpakstan) collected more than 300 manuscripts and printed publications in Arabic, Persian and Turkic languages and subsequently transferred the collection to the Institute. We started its scientific description. A preliminary list of manuscripts, lithographs, and old-printed books was compiled, and they were distributed by language, chronology and subject. Among these manuscripts are works on Muslim dogmatics, Korans, poetic works (poems by Ajiniyaz, Berdakh, Suleyman Bakyrghani, Ahmad Yasavi, various destans, etc.), treatises on the grammar of the Arabic language (“Tarkib al-Awamil”), historical works, samples of calligraphy on separate folios, etc., in Arabic, Persian and Turkic languages (Chagatai, Tatar, Karakalpak). Together, they represent the area of reading of a Muslim of that era (19-first half of the 20th century) and are one of the illustrations of the close literary and cultural ties between the Aral Sea region (then the Khanate of Khiva), the Volga region, and the Ottoman Empire (where a number of manuscripts were copied).

Introduction. Oirat-language (Clear Script) sources have been cataloguized by A. G. Sazykin, V. L. Uspensky, N. S. Yakhontova, K. V. Orlova, D. N. Muzraeva, and others. The Mongolian Collection of the Gorky Scientific Library at St. Petersburg University is a most significant set of Clear Script books and manuscripts. Oirat manuscripts were delivered mainly from Kalmyk-inhabited steppes through the efforts of A. V. Popov, K. F. Golstunsky, A. M. Pozdneev, G. S. Lytkin who would repeatedly arrive in pursuit of scholarly research — to record folklore narratives and collect manuscripts. Goals. The article aims to introduce into scientific circulation a catalog of Oirat manuscripts compiled by G. S. Lytkin (1859–1860) and stored at the Gorky Scientific Library of St. Petersburg University, and attempts to trace correlations between the mentioned list and V. L. Uspensky’s catalogue of Mongolian manuscripts and woodcuts. Materials. The study deals with a total of nineteen Oirat-language sources supplemented with explanations and notes of the compiler. Results. The catalogue of G. S. Lytkin presents both canonical works, including ones translated by Ven. Zaya Pandita, and didactic, narrative, and ritual texts. The study reveals that V. L. Uspensky identifies no collection affiliation for some manuscripts included in G. S. Lytkin’s catalogue, while others are attributed by the former to collections of K. F. Golstunsky, A.V. Popov, A. M. Pozdneev, and Stepanov.

The paper is dedicated to the collection of manuscripts, lithographs and early printed books of the Karakalpak Institute of Humanities (Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan) that combines receipts from various sources (these are individual entries from individuals, and the receipts of whole collections associated with the name of a particular collector –for example the so-called “Chimbay collection”). The work on the description of the entire fund, its systematization and compilation of a general catalog of manuscripts was started by the staff of the Karakalpak Scientific Research Institute of Humanities, and subsequently the author of this paper. Many manuscripts and early printed books represent the area of reading of a Muslim of that epoch (19–first half of the 20th century) and are one of the illustrations of the close literary and cultural ties between the Aral Sea region and the Volga region. Among them are such works as “Fiqh” al-Kaydani, “Bakirgan kitabi” and many others that were printed or copied in the Volga region (Kazan) and came to the libraries of Karakum-ishans in Khorezm and used in the educational programs of mektebs and madrasahs. The print and manuscript copies of dastan epic texts (such as “Garip Aşik”, “Köroğlu”, local versions of the “Idige” epic cycle and many others) indicates that the oral tradition of performing dastans connected with the other Turkic folklore (including the Volga region), as well as their written existence, was preserved in Karakalpakstan the 20th century for quite a long time.

The paper presents the translations, introduction and interpretation of information about Alans, obtained from the Armenian written sources of the 12th – 18th centuries. The subject of research is information from the following sources: Armenian historical works published in Russian or the original language, as well as historical or grammatical works, aide-memoirs and colophons of manuscripts that have not yet been in the focus of researchers’ attention or are introduced into the scientific use for the first time. Most of the sources published here have been identified in the collection of the M. Mashtots Research Institute of Ancient Manuscripts (Matenadaran). The information of the Armenian written sources dates the 12th – 18th centuries. This allows us to clarify the ethno-confessional map of the Caucasus in the 12th – 14th centuries and its transformation in the later period. Some of them, in particular, suggest the idea about the identity of ethnonyms “Alans” and “Osi/Oseti”. The sources also provide information about the written languages of the peoples of the Caucasus that were used in worship service. The paper pays great attention to the study of the issues of the “Alans”, “Alan Region” and “Alan Gates” mentioned in Armenian sources of the 16th – 18th centuries. The study uses the analysis of the available information on this oeconym, since in late Armenian sources the Alan Gates are localized in Derbent, and the terms “Alans” and the “Alan Region” are used in relation to the population and territory of the former Caucasian Albania.

Abstract This study, emphasizing recently discovered bamboo manuscripts as both cultural documents and material objects, investigates the active and autonomous roles played by the scribes of the Tsinghua manuscript collection. Because pre-imperial textual culture has been presented as having tremendous orthographic flexibility and textual fluidly, the codicological and paratextual properties – titles, slip numbers, punctuation marks, verso lines, etc. – have often been considered as being applied without any overarching rules. Yet despite the difficulty of finding any consistent pattern of material design throughout the entirety of pre-imperial manuscripts, within the Tsinghua University collection, I have found not absolute, yet clear overlaps among the codicological and paratextual designs and the classifications of scribal hands. These overlaps indicate that titles, slip numbers, and punctuation marks were deeply associated with the scribes or producers rather than with the readers or users. Most of the punctuation marks should be viewed as a regulation or instruction for the text’s correctness rather than some readers’ understanding or interpretation. Altogether, these purposeful, pragmatic, and surprisingly advanced paratextual devices resonate with the producers’ deepening concerns about textual loss, and show local and even individual efforts and methods to organize and stabilize the ever-changing textual lore.

Audio-visual records and archives constitute a fundamental heritage that satisfies multiple needs, including education, training, research and entertainment. As such, there is a need to appropriately preserve and conserve them so they can be accessed for as long as they are needed. In spite of their significant role in safeguarding cultural heritage, audio-visual records and archives, are often neglected and accorded less attention than paper-based records, especially in developing countries. Hence, there is a risk of losing information held in audio-visual form. That is why this study looked at how the National Archives of Zambia (NAZ) and the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) preserve audio-visual materials to ensure long-term accessibility of the information. The study investigated the types of audio-visual collections held, the storage equipment used, measures put in place to ensure long-term accessibility of audio-visual materials, the disaster preparedness plans in place to safeguard audio-visual archives and the major challenges encountered in the preservation of audio-visual materials. The findings of the study revealed that films (microfilm and microfiche), photographs and manuscripts, and video (video tapes) and sound recordings (compact cassette) constitute the biggest audio-visual collection preserved. The equipment used to store audio-visual materials included open shelves, specialised cabinets, electronic database for digitised materials, aisle mobiles and cupboards. The measures taken to ensure the long-term accessibility of audio-visual collection included digitisation and migration of endangered records and archives; fumigation of storage areas; conservation of damaged materials and regulation of temperatures and humidity in the storage areas. The disaster preparedness plans in place mostly covered structure insurance; protection against fire and water by way of installing fire extinguishers; smoke sensors; fire detectors and construction of purpose-built structures. The major challenges faced were financial constraints; technological obsolescence; lack of playback equipment; limited training; lack of strong back-up systems and inadequate storage facilities.

Abstract *Zi Chan in Volume 6 and *Shi fa in Volume 4 of Tsinghua University Collection of Warring States Bamboo-slip Manuscripts were written by one scribe. This study aims to use features of the brushwork to demonstrate this. In addition, this study will also examine physical features of the bamboo slips, handwriting, character forms, the orthography of different states, punctuation marks, erasures, and the binding of the bamboo slips. The texts of both manuscripts were first written and then bound. Research on the arrangement of *Shi fa and the layout of its text enriches our understanding about the activity of writing among Pre-Qin people, how ancient books were compiled, and how scrolls were opened.

Pilgrimage formed a central motif of medieval culture and shaped a defining aesthetic of early literature. Despite this centrality, research remains in a preliminary state for many of the actual texts, manuscripts, and books connected to pilgrimage and how they contributed to the exchange and translation of knowledge and ideas. This special issue considers issues of reading and writing before, during, and after medieval pilgrimages, as well as the methodological and historical issues at stake for both pilgrim writers and modern scholars. In particular, the articles address the vexed issue of where — and how much — reading and writing took place around historically attested pilgrimages. By employing insights from literature, history, bibliography, geography, and anthropology, this collection aims not only to understand the past, but also to examine how current biases might affect interpretation of that past. From this multidisciplinary perspective, deeper insight is offered into how pilgrims’ libraries shaped not only pilgrimage, but medieval culture in general.

What does an anthropologist’s archive look like? Where is it located? And is the anthropology of archives important for the understanding of anthropological thinking today? Here we answer these questions by analysing the various life histories of the archival fragments of one of the most puzzling and influential anthropologists in the history of Russian and Soviet anthropology: Sergei Mikhailovich Shirokogoroff (1887–1939). Shirokogoroff is credited as being one of the authors of the etnos theory — one of the main instruments of identity politics in Russia, China, Germany and also, in part, Japan and South Africa. The transnational life histories of Shirokogoroff and his wife Elizaveta [Elizabeth] Nikolaevna (1884–1943), and of their ideas, suggests a conception of the archive not as a single whole, but instead as a collection of forgotten, hidden, obliterated, or, on the other hand, scrupulously preserved fragments. These fragments are not centred in one place or organized around any one reading, but they nevertheless represent “partial connections”. Moreover, as we can see today with hindsight, none of these archival fragments lay inert. They have been intertwined in local political and social ontologies. Our text has an autoethnograpic quality. While illustrating separate episodes from the life of the Shirokogoroffs we also will tell of our search for the manuscripts through which we were forced onto strange paths and encounters. These greatly deepened our understanding both of the life of documents and their material links to the lives of researchers. Our article is an attempt to illustrate this complex picture which, in the end, will allow us to conclude that we have only just begun to understand the workings of the anthropologist’s archive in the history of anthropological thought.

AbstractDisplaced and nationalized cultural property remains hidden in the vast holdings of museums, libraries, and archives around the world. Some governments holding these “trophies” of war and conquest refuse to return such cultural treasures to their rightful owners even when their provenance has been identified. They assert that the collections were obtained through expropriation and nationalization, and that divestiture of a museum, library, or archive would jeopardize the existence of these institutions and cause societal discord.This article discusses the struggle of an orthodox Jewish organization to recover from the Russian Federation a collection of sacred, irreplaceable books and manuscripts seized in the aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution and during World War II. The story of Agudas Chasidei Chabad's efforts to recover these core religious texts of its spiritual leaders has involved appeals by U.S. presidents, congress, and the U.S. Helsinki Commission, as well as lawsuits in the Soviet Union/Russia and United States.After prolonged litigation in the United States, a federal court of appeals in Washington DC ruled in 2008 that American courts have jurisdiction over Chabad's suit against the Russian Federation to recover its religious texts. This ruling may pave the way for the resolution of this dispute and also lead to the filing of other suits in American courts seeking to recover looted cultural property, even if that property is located outside U.S. borders.

The Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IOM RAS) has more than 100,000 manuscripts and xylographs in 60 Oriental languages. The Korean fund represents a small part of this collection, however the unique works of Korean culture stored in the IOM RAS are of interest to both researchers from the Republic of Korea and local Russian scientists. The article describes the difficulties of reading the text of the D-86 xylograph "Samseolgi jung" from the Manuscript Collection of the IOM RAS. The work highlights the main problems that a researcher may encounter when working with similar medieval sources of Korean culture written in the Korean alphabet (in Hangul). The author of the article analyzes some features of the Modern Korean language revealed in this xylograph and describes its differences from the language of the 15th century and from Contemporary Korean, using the study of texts written in Hangul in different centuries for comparison. Commented examples of the old orthography and different spelling variations of the same word are used to illustrate the peculiarities in the language of the source. This article also describes the features of writing the graphics of the text of the 19th century, which were not previously covered (in particular, the symbol of repetition of the previous syllable, which in its graphic form and function is similar to the repetition sign used in the Chinese language, and the abbreviation sign of the median predicative affix 고 /go/).

The article is devoted to the study of new manuscript materials from the collection of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the relations between members of the Korean diplomatic mission and the Russian Orthodox Mission in Beijing. The letters, written in the first 20 years of the 19th century, contain correspondence between the members of the two countries' missions, which cannot be found in contemporary historical sources. This article is devoted to studying the addressee of the members of the Korean diplomatic mission, putting all the letters in order, and clarifying their historical value in the study of Sino-Russian-Korean relations on the eve of the modern time. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that these manuscripts, closely related to the activities of the great Russian sinologist N. Ya. Bichurin, have not been studied before. According to the content of these letters, Bichurin communicated with the Koreans on the model of educated Chinese people, and one of the purposes of communication between the envoys of the two countries was the acquisition of different information. The relevance of the study is caused by the growing scientific interest of scholars in new manuscript materials about the history of Russian sinology and Russian-Korean relations.

Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of Russian Academy of Sciences holds four collections of watercolours, photographs and material culture items, related to Persia of the 1920s and gathered there by Yuriy and Sophia Marr. Yuriy Marr (1893—1935), the son of Academician Nikolai Marr (1865—1934), who had an unprecedented impact on the development of the humanities in the early Soviet period, devoted his short life to Iranian studies and was among the best experts in the Persian language, literature and daily life of contemporary Persia. In recent decades, Yuriy Marr gained new recognition as a futurist poet due to a series of publications of his literary heritage, carefully preserved for many years by his wife Sophia Marr (1890—1980). In 1925—1926 Yuriy Marr was on mission in Persia to establish cultural ties and collect data on librarianship and publishing activities. The article briefly highlights the features of three collections representing some ethnographic realities of Persia on the eve of comprehensive modernization of the country. Emphasis is made on the collection that was received from Sophia Marr in 1978. The collection includes a woolen cloak (‘aba’) brought by Yuriy Marr from his student trip to Lebanon and Syria in 1914, and 15 watercolour portraits on plywood sheets, copied from the original photographs that were found in the Archives of Orientalists at the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The article is dedicated to the Buryat blessings or well-wishes (yurools) used in late 19th /early 20th century, collected in various areas of Buryatia by a local folklorist S.P. Baldaev. The study is based on the case No. 475 of Baldaev’s fund. The purpose of the article is to analyze the collection of wishes from the specified fund as historical sources. The following tasks were defined: typing down the text of the wishes; describing the fund’s structure; sorting content by topic; revealing the difference in interpretation of the words «yureel» and «yurool»; examining lexical features of the text. Source studies and textual analysis were used as the primary research methods. As a result, the authors concluded that this fund contains unpublished folklore records made by a researcher of the late 19th – early 20th century that are extremely valuable for various fields of research. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that this fund, a huge storehouse of Buryat oral folk art, has been studied for the first time. The publication of these materials makes it possible to reconstructi the traditional way of life and worldview of the Buryats, preserve and transmit it to the future generations. The research of the block of wishes from the fund revealed that some yurools recorded in different regions are repeated with minor differences. This suggests that the culture of wishes was largely the same in different Buryat tribes, and some Yurools were quite widespread.

The present review discusses the collective monograph “Ibrahim-Haji from Urada (1701-1770) and his era: studies on history and life” (Makhachkala, 2021), which is a significant contribution to Caucasian studies. Given the fact that in recent years in historical science there has been an increased interest in the personality of Ibrahim-Haji al-Uradi, the comprehensive monograph sheds light on many aspects of the life and work of the outstanding scholar and expert in Islamic law and grammar of the Avar language, author of poems in Avar, theologian, one of the ideologists of the struggle between the Dagestanis and Nadir Shah, Qadi of Gidatl. The authors of the collective monograph, using a rich documentary base, carry out a scrupulous reconstruction of political events in the Caucasus of the period under study, and against this background analyze the life and work of Ibrahim-Haji al-Uradi. For the first time in modern Caucasian studies, the authors have introduced a number of Georgian, Turkish and Iranian primary sources, which help to reveal a more complete picture of the events in the Eastern Caucasus and the entire Caucasian region as a whole in the second half of the 18th century. Moreover, the authors attracted Arabic-language sources from private manuscript collections from Gidatl and the contents of the collections from the Collection of Oriental Manuscripts of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the DFRC RAS. In addition to that, it is necessary to mention the private and mosque manuscript collections of Dagestan. In total, the authors have attracted more than 2000 works in their work. This study undoubtedly occupies a worthy place along with other works devoted to the life and work of Ibrahim-Hajji al-Uradi.

AbstractThis article explores the innovative and hybrid intellectual project of Christopher Azaare Anabila. Since 1976, Azaare has been documenting the histories of the Gurensi and Boosi people of northern Ghana and has crafted genealogical maps of whole villages and clans. He has written manuscripts on taboos, totems, proverbs, missionary activities, cultural institutions and anti-colonial resistance. Because of this work, people have begun to refer to Azaare as Agurumyela, which in Gurene means ‘a person who digs into people's past’. Central to this lifelong endeavour is the museum of Gurensi culture that Azaare has been building in Gowrie. I present Azaare's views of this wide-ranging process of collection and re-casting and reflect on his motivation to reclaim history and curating authority from professional academics. I argue that Azaare's project allows us to recognize the ubiquitous existence of a vibrant strand of African intellectual creativity that combines multiple repertoires and draws on overlapping and diverse productions in different modes and media. Next, I turn to Azaare's manuscript on the institution of tindaanaship (earth custodians). I explore his genealogical method as an art of connection that highlights his role as an engaged community intellectual, weaving extensive networks between Gurensi communities, officials and academics.

Abstract The stories *Dan 丹 from the Fangmatan 放馬灘 Qin manuscripts, and Taiyuan you sizhe 泰原有死者 from the Peking University Qin manuscript collection, tell of the afterlife and the proper burial and sacrificial practices for the dead through the words of two men who died and returned to life. The proper burial and sacrificial practices proposed in the texts include the replacement of money and silk with symbolic objects, the abandonment of burying a body in the bent position and the breaking of burial goods, the restriction on joint burial of husband and wife, and advocating moderation and cleanliness in sacrificial rituals at the grave. The two texts reflect how the literate class endeavored to make the old burial and sacrificial customs in Qin culture closer to the collective customs of the six eastern states.

Introduction. The tradition of worshiping Ganapati in Buddhism, including in religious traditions of Mongols, is an interesting — though understudied — issue. In Hinduism, this ancient deity was believed an evil demon (Vinayaka) inclined to create obstacles. Subsequently, when included in the Buddhist pantheon, its tantric forms became widespread enough in Tibet and Mongolia. In Buddhist teachings, Ganapati is seen as an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, and in some of its forms is associated with Chakrasamvara and Tara, hence having little in common with the Hindu Ganesha, the son of Parvati and Shiva, the Lord of the Ganas. The cult of Ganapati in Buddhist countries shows how the ancient deity of Hinduism had lost its original essence — to become an organic part of the Buddhist tantric tradition. Goals. The paper aims to introduce Oirat texts of the Ganapati Dharani Sutra. Materials and methods. Collections of Mongolian manuscripts in Russia and other countries contain a total of seven dharani sutras in the Oirat Clear Script. The study focuses on a Kalmyk manuscript from the Saxon State and University Library Dresden (Mongolian Collection) and a manuscript from the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (Institute of Language and Literature, Oirat Collection). The work employs textual research methods and tools of comparative historical analysis. Results. Some manuscripts in the Clear Script are literary works of minimal size that include two parts — Dharani Sutra of Lord Ganapati (Oir. Xutuqtu čuulγani ezen kemēküyin toqtōl) and Collected Dharanis of the Five Chapters of Pancharaksha (Oir. Pañcaragšyin tabun bölögiyin xurangyui). The combination of the two texts in a single work makes it possible to assume the worshipping practice of Ganapati be somewhat tied to that of the five Pancharaksha protector goddesses. In Buddhism, the Ganapati Dharani Sutra is recited for various purposes, such as welfare, virtuous reincarnation, new knowledge, and spiritual progress. Conclusions. Texts of the Ganapati Dharani Sutra and various iconographic images (forms) are integral to tantric practices believed instrumental in acquiring, cognizing and organizing new knowledge, thus forming milestone spiritual experiences on the path towards the ultimate goal of Buddhists.

The Lithuanian folklore collections by the Finnish folklorist Aukusti Robert Niemi seem symbolically to enframe his two decades of the Lithuanian cultural activity. Professor started from doing fieldwork (visiting northeastern Lithuania in 1910 and southern Lithuania in 1911), which subsequently formed the basis for his scholarly research. In 1931, just before Niemi died, the manuscripts of his folklore collections returned to Lithuania from Finland in order to get the fieldwork materials of 1911 finally edited and published. The two decades in-between served to form and establish in the Lithuanian historiography the pattern of particularly positive appreciation of professor’s Lithuanian activities, the basis for which was the collection produced as result of his fieldwork in 1910, entitled “Lithuanian Songs and Chants in the Northeastern Lithuania” and published in 1912.This article aims at revising the established mode of evaluating the Lithuanian traditional folklore collected by Niemi. The subject of analysis consists of the manuscript collection of the southern Lithuanian folklore, which, although edited for publication, remained nevertheless unpublished. This collection consists of two separate archived folders preserved at the Lithuanian Folklore Archives of the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore. It has been endowed status of a trustworthy source in the historiography of Lithuanian folklore research and the source editing tradition, without proper consideration of possible complications caused by the shape of this collection, the linguistic problems encountered by a foreign researcher recording oral folksongs, and the geographic area of recording, which significantly exceeded the boundaries of southern Lithuania.The manuscript folklore collection from southern Lithuania is peculiar in terms of one mode of evaluation required by the fieldwork notes and quite another – by the copy of the manuscript, which allows for reconstructing the collection as a whole, since part of the original autograph is lost. In the course of analysis, the texts from the copy and those from the autograph were thoroughly compared. This comparison highlighted certain changes having taken place in the copy, which perhaps resulted from carelessness, inexperience or neglect by the copyists or editors readying the texts for publication, as well as from specific problems inherent in the autograph and causing reasonable doubt in the trustworthiness of the copy. In the process of archiving, there occurred a mistake resulting in a sheaf of miscellaneous folklore from various places in Lithuania being added to the original collection. These texts subsequently found their way into the card file catalogues of Lithuanian riddles, proverbs and folksongs as authentic recordings; although according to the catalogues, they should have been regarded as copies from the folklore collections by the Lithuanian Science Society. So far, the fieldwork notes by Niemi were usually thought to have been produced by his assistants, who actually recorded the texts. The textological analysis of fieldwork notes from southern Lithuania enabled revision of such assumptions. Although Niemi’s assistants did lend him a hand in recording the folksong texts, certain peculiarities of the recordings allow us assuming that the majority of the material was noted down by the professor himself, who did not know the Lithuanian language sufficiently. This would clarify numerous inaccuracies that impede reading and understanding of the autograph: confused vowels and consonants, distorted words and lexical forms (these seem to be acoustic lapses resulting in random joining of separate syllables into words without considering the actual meaning of the text), as well as incoherent and fragmented character of the texts. However, unbiased appreciation of the folkloric legacy by the Finnish researcher Niemi is only possible with due consideration of the textological problems and quality issues inherent in his texts. Besides, sufficient elucidation of the circumstances under which this collection was compiled and the scholarly intentions of its collector could add attractiveness to it, particularly if the subtle textological nuances can be made relevant as peculiar marks left by a foreign speaking collector.

The subject of the article comprises Lithuanian collections of texts from the second half of the 19th century, compiled by individuals of peasant origins and preserved at the Lithuanian Folklore Archives. The research involves over 40 of such collections, in which part or majority of the inscriptions consist of poetic pieces: personal poetic compositions or folksongs chiefly selected from printed sources of the time. The analysis in the article focuses on the contents of these texts, describing various components of their repertoire, attempting at establishing and identifying the sources, from which the individual texts could have originated. Analysis of these collections takes into account the social and cultural context in Lithuania of the 19th century, chiefly defined by the imperial policy of the tsarist Russia, essentially aiming at strengthening the loyalty of the Lithuanian population to the official government, and the movement of national revival, striving to enhance the Lithuanian national self-consciousness. The author assumes the main motive behind the compilation of the personal collections of texts to be the issue of problematic availability of the Lithuanian press, partly caused by the four decades-long ban of printing in Latin alphabet, which had fatal harmful consequences to the development of the Lithuanian national culture. The author of the article concludes that majority of the collections in question probably comprised texts published by the illegal Lithuanian press of the time: newspapers, calendars, books of religious literature or popular fiction, folklore publications, or manuscripts by other people. However, the possibility of some texts finding their way into these collections directly from oral tradition is also valid. Analysis of the poetic repertoire of the personal collections enables asserting that their compilers / owners equally appreciated rather diverse written pieces – both literary compositions (mainly individual poetry) and folksongs. Such stratification of individual poetry and traditional songs derived from the interest in Lithuanian folklore, which was particularly characteristic to the culture of the national revival, and from the fact that in publications of the second half of the 19th century both individual poems and folksongs appeared as poetic compositions of the same nature.According to the scarce personal data occurring in the manuscripts and mostly representing provenance, the author of the article attempts drawing a broad-brush portrait of the compiler of the textual collection. This must have been a rather young male of peasant origins, who has graduated from primary school (either illegal or official one) and attended gymnasium or seminary; literate in Lithuanian, Polish and Russian; open to the ideas of the national revival and interested in the available written sources of religious or secular kind.The manuscripts compiled for individual purposes discussed in this article emerge as an important source for the analysis of relationship between individual creativity and writing in general with folklore. The Lithuanian collections of texts from the second half of the 19th century have captured a moment in the confluence of written and oral tradition, which rather than being identified with merging of these cultural systems should be perceived as a certain stage of adapting individual literary creativity to the folklore communication. We should regard these compilations of textual materials as belonging to the written culture rather than folklore as oral tradition.The author also investigates the issue of traditionalism, of historical continuity in relation to these collections of texts picked out and copied from miscellaneous sources. The Lithuanian personal collections of texts from the second half of the 19th century functioning in the peasant society should be related to the earlier traditional collections of texts in Latin, Polish, and old Slavonic languages from the 17th – beginning of the 19th century Lithuania. The Lithuanian data thus becomes part of the wider European historical and cultural context. Personal collections of texts as a rather peculiar genre relate to the commonplace books thriving in the Renaissance period, which served in the humanist educational system as means for disciplined reading. The article presents a retrospective survey of subsequent changes in content and form experienced by these extract books / collections of texts on their way from the academic discourse to the private everyday sphere.

This article examines the development and the contents of the library of Ignacy Oginski, appointed elder of the Darsūniškis and Vaiguva communities; his collection of books is discussed with an emphasis on how the sense of self as well as geneological and religious identity are expressed. The library of I.Oginski is discussed within the context of the history of his family and closest relatives as well as his connections with the Bernardines of Trakai. The bibliographical and provenance analysis is founded on I. Oginski’s books, which are stored in Vilnius University Library (10 specimens); also published at the end of this paper is a list of books bestowed by I. Oginski to the Trakai Bernardine Monastery, which itself was added into the 1787 catalogue of the monastery’s library. It was determined that I. Oginski belonged to the third order of the Franciscan tertiaries and was a financial affairs trustee (i.e., a syndic, Lat. Sindicus Apostolicus) of the Trakai Bernardine Monastery, which he, together with his mother Antonina Oginska, had amply sponsored and to which he bequeathed upon death a sum of 7 thousand Lithuanian Zloty. I. Oginski bestowed his personal library, which consisted of 201 volume, to the Bernardines on March 29, 1786 based on a testament written in Kruonis. It contained not only the more traditional printed materials but also some sheet music characteristic of courtly culture, ledgers, and silva rerum manuscripts. Noteworthy is the prayer “On the Appeal for a Fulfilling Life” (Pol. O uproszenie stanu życia przyzwoitego), handwritten by I. Oginski himself. A large part of the library consisted of ascetic lectures, spiritual exercises, and sermons typical of the Bernardine monks, but the collection was not limited in this aspect, as it also had some secular French works from the Enlightenment period and textbooks printed by the publishing house of the Vilnius Piarists. The considerable number of historical works and books containing dedications with references to the merits of the Oginskis to the state and the Church shows that I. Oginski was particularly attentive of his family history. Generally, the library demonstrates quite clearly a promotional-religious aspect of I. Oginski’s genealogical sense of self and identity. And here, too, the ascetic literature supplements the data from other sources regarding I. Oginski’s piety and his belonging to the tertiary community. The carried out study of I. Oginski’s identity and his personal library’s development and the relevant associations confirms the available possibilities of using the approaches and methodologies of cultural anthropology and social communication in book science studies.

Introduction. The article deals with the xylograph Tegüs čoγtu qan gbar-mkan-u takilγ-a küsel türgen qangγaγči čindamani erdeni kemegdekü orusiba (Worship of the majestic Khan-Barkhan: „Chintamani-treasure, quickly fulfilling desires“) by dorampa Ignen-Choimpel; the treatise is part of the collection kept in the Center of Oriental Manuscripts and Xylographs of Institute of Mongolian, Buddhist and Tibetan Studies of the Siberian Branch of the RAS (Ulan-Ude). It aims to analyze the source along the following lines: i) to identify the author of the manuscript, ii) to transliterate the text and check the accuracy of its reading with a focus on its specific lexical features, iii) to identify the time and place of its compilation and publication, iv) to research similar works related to the cult of Mount Khan-Barkhan, and v) to examine the structure of the text and give a short description of its content. Methods and materials. The methodology of source studies, as well as the textological analysis used by the present researchers helped establish dorampa Ignen-Choimpel’s exceptional knowledge of Buddhist philosophy and of the Mongolian language. Comparative-historical, typological, and descriptive methods were instrumental in examining the transformation of the mountain worship ritual in the process of its historical development. Granted the role of mountains as an essential element in the worldview of many cultures, as well as the significance of the text for practices of Buryats of Barguzin region today, the present research is of much relevance. The article may be used as a source for studies of the factors influencing the current revival of the mountain cult and the present religious practices of the population in the region. Results. The text under study contains new data concerning the veneration of ezhins — host-spirits of local features such as mountains, the Barkhan mountain of Kurumkan region in Buryatia, in particular. Also, this is a piece of important historical evidence shedding light on the cultural and religious processes that took place among the Buryats in the 19th century. Conclusions. The research indicated the presence of syncretic elements in the text of the treatise, including borrowings of some shamanic traditional rituals associated with the mountain worship, as well as the presence of specific lexical elements such as archaic words and expressions. Importantly, Buddhist borrowings of shamanic deities and rituals familiar to the local Buryat people contributed to the promotion of Buddhism among the local population.
