Résumé :
Managing capital structure is an imperative decision made by all firms. The manner in which financing is organized is a strategic financial decision and managers must settle on the amount of debt in relation to equity that it requires to maintain. Despite many empirical studies investigating the choice of capital structure for large corporates, minimal research has been conducted on capital structure decisions in small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs). This study identifies major factors influencing the capital structure of SMMEs in a developing economy and enlightens owners/managers on the importance thereof. This investigation used a quantitative research approach, which was cross-sectional. A convenience sampling method was adopted, and data were collected from 136 respondents, only confined to the retail and whole sector, which is the second largest sector in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The partial least squares structural equation modelling was utilized to determine the statistical results. It was discovered that managerial factors such as individual goals and financing preference of the owner/manager, network ties, attitude to debt, maintaining control and asymmetric information; and firm-level factors such as size of the firm, profitability and firm age are major factors that influence the capital structure of SMMEs. Therefore, capital structure decisions are made motivated by the attitudes of the owners/managers.

Résumé :
Model test investigation on rectangular section composite micro-pile structure used for earth slope reinforcement has been performed, including the mechanical and deformation properties and pile spacing influence on anti-sliding capacity. Test results have shown the main following conclusions. For the rectangular section composite micro-pile structure and the similar soil in tests, micro-pile row spacing along the lateral load direction ranging from 4D to 6D (D is the diameter of micro-pile) can provide higher anti-sliding capacity. Active earth pressure of the first row pile is larger than that of other piles when the anti-sliding potential of composite micro-pile structure is fully developed. Relative deformation of the first row pile is larger than that of the middle and last row piles above the slip surface, while relative deformation of the last row pile is larger than that of other piles beneath the slip surface. The main failure mode of the rectangular section composite micro-pile structure can be regarded as bending failure in certain range near the slip surface.

Résumé :
The original micro structure of the base metal is significantly affected by a welding thermal cycle, irrespective of the type of the heat source. Hence, new phases and different grain size result in the welding bead. The tensile strength of the overall structure is affected in turn. Tensile tests are normally conducted to eventually test a square butt joint configuration. In conjunction, micro hardness is thought to be a good indicator to predict where the fracture would occur in the welded structure. Referring to common metal alloys for aerospace and considering a diode-pumped disk-laser source, the response of the base metal to the laser beam is investigated in this paper. Autogenous welding of aluminum alloy 2024, autogenous welding of titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V and dissimilar welding of Haynes 188 with Inconel 718 are discussed, with respect to micro structure changes in the fused zone and in the heat affected zone. The failure mode is examined.

Résumé :
Regular micro-surface structure in the form of micro-pores produced on the face of mechanical seals by laser technology can be used to improve the friction performance of the seal mating rings. A test rig with variable axial load was used to test laser-textured seal rings with micro-pores of various pore depth and pore ratio to study the effect of the laser-textured seal face structure parameters on the friction performance of mechanical seals. It is found that there are optimum texturing face parameters at which the friction torque and the face temperature rise of seal rings are minimum. Results of these tests show that the micro-pores on one of the seal mating faces can generate substantial hydrodynamic effect. Heat generation due to frictional contact on seal-ring surfaces is a major factor that causes deterioration of face seals and shortens their service life[1,2]. Excessive temperature rise can be avoided by improving structure of a seal surface. By means of laser technology return-flow structure, oblique line groove and spherical micro-pores are engraved on the seal face[3-5]. The research shows that substantial hydrodynamic effect can be generated between the seal faces with micro-pores[6-8]. In this study experiments are performed on laser-textured micro-pores seal faces at various axial loads to investigate the effect of the face structure and operating parameters on friction torque and face temperature rise.

Résumé :
In order to evaluate strength reliability of micron size polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) structure, bending tests of cantilever beam and Weibull analysis are performed. Recently, the importance of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) in society is increasing, and the number of production is also increasing. The MEMS devices, which contain mechanical movement, have to maintain their reliability in face of external shock, thermal stress and residual stress from manufacturing processes. In greeting the mass production era of the MEMS, in case the material strength design of MEMS is performed, required strength data is not average value but the variation, especially minimum value of the material. Micron size poly-Si structure is widely employed in the MEMS such as microsensor, switching device and so on. Then, in order to evaluate strength reliability of micron size poly-Si structure, tests and analysis are performed. The specimen is made by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process and thickness is 3.5, 6.4 and 8.3 micrometer and the specimen has notch. The test specimen used for the test changed characteristics of (1) film thickness (2) stress concentration, and investigation about the influence each effects of the variation in a bending strength are discussed.

Résumé :
Activated TIG welding has been performed on Al – 8% SiC composite 5mm plate with various fluxes such as Al2O3, MnO2, CaO, MgO, SiO2 & TiO2, to study & analyze the Microstructure, Micro hardness and cooling rate. Correlation study between micro hardness, microstructure and cooling rate for Constant Current TIG welding and Activated TIG welding on Al-SiC composite are also carried out to analyze the relation between the effect of cooling rate on microstructure & the effect of microstructure on micro hardness. The experimental results of ATIG welding on Al-SiC composite shows fine grain weld microstructure on ATIG – SiO2 & ATIG – TiO2, which results in higher micro hardness. Micro hardness values are taken in different locations of weld surface at 1mm, 2mm & 3mm below the weld surface and the same is also observed along the weld zone to heat affected zone upto 12mm for the center of the weldment. Minimum micro hardness values found in ATIG – MnO2, ATIG – CaO & ATIG – MgO are due to intermediate micro structure between coarse and fine in heat affected zone. ATIG – Al2O3 weld zone & heat affected zone and heat affected zone of ATIG – MnO2, ATIG – CaO & ATIG – MgO shows coarse microstructure leading to reduction in micro hardness value. Cooling rate for the different CCTIG & ATIG welding are recorded and correlation between the micro structures are studied. Coarse micro structure in weld zone and heat affected zone have least cooling rate whereas fine micro structure in weld zone resulted at higher cooling rate. Heat affected zone strongly depends on temperature gradient between the weld center and weldment’s heat affected zone.

In this work, the microstructure of the dragonfly wing vein was investigated by the finite element method (FEM). It is a bionic view to simulate the microstructure of the wing vein, which could be used to construct the micro air vehicles (MAVs). From the FEM results, the sandwich structure of the dragonfly wing vein was proved, which could supply more torsional deformation and reduce the weight of dragonfly. And the protein layer in the sandwich structure almost not bear the bending loadings, which could protect the protein not to be destroyed. It could assist us to utilize such design for the new micro air vehicle (MAV), especially ornithopter.

Welding with micro-jet cooling is an innovate technology. It is possible to get structure of weld metal deposit (WMD) with a very high amount of acicular ferrite (on the level of 70 %) that is not valuable for other processes. It corresponds with good impact toughness of weld. In the paper parameters of micro-jet cooling and mechanical structure of weld will be present and compared with welding without micro-jet cooling. Results of investigation are very optimistic. That technology should be treated for welding of other materials.

Résumé :
This research used a carbide ball nose end mill cutting tool to fabricate a micro dimple on the aluminium block. The problem is that the micro dimple should be fabricated with a better surface finish which is related to surface integrity and form accuracy of the dimple. The objective is to study the optimum CNC milling parameters for the micro dimple fabrication and analyse the surface integrity and form accuracy of the dimple. Based on three different parameters which is depth of cut, feed rate, and spindle speed, the better surface roughness and the diameter, depth of micro dimple are experimented using the carbide cutting tools to fabricate micro dimple and analyse the data using 3D confocal microscope. The better surface roughness, high form accuracy and surface integrity of micro dimple structure were achieved with the optimum CNC milling parameters. The high spindle speed, low depth of cut and low feed rate showed the best results for the surface roughness and form accuracy. The proposed parameters were high spindle speed of 3600 RPM, low depth of cut 0.25mm and low feed rate of 50mm/min.

Résumé :
Power chips with high power dissipation and high heat flux have caused serious thermal management problems. Traditional indirect cooling technologies could not satisfy the increasing heat dissipation requirements. The embedded cooling directly inside the chip is the hot spot of the current research, which bears greater cooling potential comparatively, due to the shortened heat transfer path and decreased thermal resistance. In this study, the thermal behaviors of the power chips were demonstrated using a thermal test chip, which was etched with micro-channels on its substrate?s backside and bonded with a manifold which also fabricated with silicon wafer. The chip has normal thermal test function and embedded cooling function at the same time, and its size is 7 ? 7 ? 1.125 mm3. This paper mainly discussed the influence of width of micro-channels and the number of manifold channels on the thermal and hydraulic performance of the embedded cooling structure in the single-phase regime. Compared with the conventional straight micro-channel structure, the cooling coefficient of performance of the 8 ? ?50 (number of manifold distribution channels: 8, micro-channel width: 50 ?m) structure is 3.38 times higher. It is verified that the 8 ? ?50 structure is capable of removing power dissipation of 300 W (heat flux: 1200 W/cm2) at a maximum junction temperature of 69.6? with pressure drop of less than 90.8 kPa. This study is beneficial to promote the embedded cooling research, which could enable the further release of the power chips performance limited by the dissipated heat.

Résumé :
Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) with contrast variation was used to characterize the fractal behavior and embedded porosity of micro/nano-sized 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) crystallites, gauging the effects of particle sizes on the microstructural features. Scattering results reveal that the external surface of micro-sized TATB crystallites are continuous and smooth interfaces and their internal pores display a surface fractal structure (surface fractal dimension 2.15 < DS < 2.25), while the external surface of nano-sized TATB particles exhibit a surface fractal structure (surface fractal dimension 2.36 < DS < 2.55) and their internal pores show a two-level volume fractal structure (large voids consist of small voids). The voids volume fraction of nano-sized TATB particles are found increased distinctively when compared with micro-sized TATB particles on length scale between 1 nm and 100 nm. Specific surface areas are also estimated based on Porod law method, which are coincident with Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurements. The contrast variation technique distinguishes the information of internal voids from external surface, suggesting SANS is a powerful tool for determining the microstructural features, which can be used to establish the relationship between microstructures and properties of micro/nano-energetic materials.

Résumé :
This study describes the results on the fabrication, testing and analysis of curved micro nozzle/diffuser. First, we use different polymers, SU-8 and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for the fabrication of curved micro nozzle/diffuser. By using the low-temperature bonding technique, we can combine the structure with the glass and accomplish the component. In order to understand the investigation and analysis of fluid dynamics characteristics, we measure the pressure and flow of curved micro nozzle/diffuser and the commercially available software CFD was adopted for analyzing the performance of straight and curved micro nozzle/ diffuser. If we have a given Reynolds number, the experimental data shows the pressure loss of the diffuser is lower than that of the nozzle due to the change of momentum. Furthermore, the results also indicate that the pressure loss coefficient of both curved nozzle and diffuser decrease with the Reynolds number. All the experimental and numerical data Eventually are compared with each other. The numerical data was found good agreement with previous analytic solution and experimental results. In sum, the theoretical analysis and design basis from this study can be formulated as the reference in the fabrication of micro nozzle/diffuser.

Résumé :
The fluid thrust vectoring nozzle has a fixed profile, few moving parts, and lightweight structure, providing effective flight control for high maneuvering aircraft. The nonlinear control law of the jet deflection angle is one of the critical problems of fluid thrust vector technology. However, the research on the deflection control law of the thermal jet in a fluid thrust vectoring nozzle is not ideal. In this paper, the control law of micro-turbojet engines under a thermal jet is studied by numerical simulations and experiments. The numerical results show that the nonlinear control law of the jet deflection angle is caused by the vortex structure between the main jet and the nozzle wall. The numerical results show that the passive flow control method can effectively change the vortex structure distribution on the nozzle wall by changing the shape of the nozzle outlet structure. This change of flow structure can effectively make the jet deflection control law close to linear. The experimental results show that the nozzle with this configuration can continuously and controllably deflect the main jet under the thermal jet of the micro-turbojet engine. The vector deflection control law of this nozzle configuration is close to linear and has less thrust loss.

Traditional concrete is brittle, rigid and less durable. The search for the new material in construction industry results in the development of new class of Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC), known as Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC). They impart ductility and durability to the structure. In concrete structural cracks develop even before loading, particularly due to drying shrinkage or other causes of volume changes. When loaded, the micro cracks propagate and open up, and owing to the effect of stress concentration, additional cracks form in places of minor defects. The development of micro cracks is the main cause of inelastic deformation in concrete. This paper deals with flexural behavior of ECC.

This present study describes a novel micro-fabrication technique using transfer-print of thin-film for micro-mechanical structure. Some thin-films of Au have been transferred from a stamp onto pre-structured micro-ridges of polymer substrate. These thin-films successfully form into an array of fixed micro-beams as a mechanical structure. The fabricated micro-beams typically have a thickness of less than 100 nm and a tens micro-meter long. This present paper also reports an investigation about effects of stamp surface properties. A modification of stamp surface wettability and roughness improves adhesive force (releasability) of thin-film to provide flat micro-beam without undesired deformations. Hydrophobic stamp with micro-roughness results in an increase of production yield of micro-beams to reach more than 90%. Simple mechanical test shows that the fabricated micro-beam is transversely tensioned by the supporting micro-ridges of substrate. It is clarified that the proposed process can be applied to fabricate micro/nano-mechanical elements.

Résumé :
Results of an experimental investigation into the behavior of laminar jet diffusion flames, produced using micro-slot burner ports, are presented. Under certain conditions, the cross-sectional shape of micro-slot flames is qualitatively similar to the cross-sectional shape of circular burner port flames produced in an environment where molecular diffusion is the primary transport mechanism. An order of magnitude analysis reveals that, over the range of experimental conditions examined, the behavior of the experimentally observed micro-slot flames is not necessarily diffusion-controlled. A comparison of the experimental data with an accepted theoretical model shows that current theoretical models do not accurately predict the experimentally observed flame heights. A theoretical expression for purely diffusion-controlled micro-slot flame height is developed and compared with experimental micro-slot flame data. The region where this theoretical expression is valid is identified through an examination of the diffusion to buoyancy parameter. A qualitative discussion of micro-slot flame structure is also presented.

Résumé :
Micro dimple is a standard surface structure that is commonly used in micro-moulds, micro/nano-fluid devices, micromechanical systems, and bionic functional surfaces. These microstructure surfaces can be used for optical communication systems, micro sensors, flat panel display, light emitting diode applications and others. Many researchers have performed investigations on the parameters that help in manufacturing the micro dimple. However, there is still limited research on the certain parameters that will affect the micro dimple using EDM die sinking machine. EDM die sinking process involved a tool and workpiece material which immersed in a dielectric fluid medium and use the electrical spark discharges from electric pulse generation to remove the workpiece material. The actual performance of the surface integrity and form accuracy in micro dimple by EDM die sinking machine remains unclear. Therefore, this research attempts to investigate the effect of the dimple measurement such as diameter, depth and surface roughness (Ra) to the parameters which is surface roughness (Rz), sparking gap and type of electrode. By utilising the parameters, the lab experiment was conducted, and their surface integrity, effects in micro dimple behaviour were investigated. It was discovered that the higher surface roughness (Rz), the higher current produced thus erodes the material and caused the measurement of the dimple (diameter, depth and surface roughness (Ra)) differed from the expected size. Also the findings that the surface integrity was ununiformed due to the tool worn out occurred during the electric spark process causing high material rate removal. Other than that, the material electrode which has the high thermal conductivity and melting point resulted the best form accuracy of micro dimple.

Résumé :
The rapid market need of MEMS (Micro Electromechanical System) and metal microparts are increasing gradually. The plastic microforming has received more interests and applications in MEMS because it ensures high precision and manufacturing efficiency. However, it raises the higher demand on the microforming and plastic processing technology. Here we present one new process to micro-extrude microparts with laser-aided heating method. The new process is to selectively heat the workpiece with the laser radiation method to the suitable temperature that is between room temperature and recrystallization temperature, and to extrude the workpiece. This process is characterized by decreasing the influence of strain strengthening and lowering the resistance to deformation, and increasing the uniformity of material flow. The key elements of the approach concerning the warm micro-extrusion and temperature control, such as process parameters, laser heating system, micro-extrusion die structure, have been advanced. Furthermore, an important aspect of the research is that the developed system and theory of micro warm extrusion based on laser heating can be explored for further investigation and understanding of plastic microforming.

Résumé :
The cremation urn is a tiny archaeological site of its own, with finds, features, stratification and structure. The old prescription was to take the pot apart, or slice it, and micro-excavate with inevitable damage and loss. Here is a new methodology – the application of a CT scan as used in medicine. The authors evaluate the results on 35 Etruscan cremations, finding that CT not only provides an excellent guide for micro-excavation, but allows the degree of fragmentation to be appreciated inside the pot and maps those metal objects that have corroded to a crust and do not survive excavation. They emphasise the value of the method in making a ‘first resort’ primary record especially in commercial archaeology.

Résumé :
Electrorheological (ER) fluid-assisted polishing process is the ultra precision finishing technologies for micro-aspherical lenses and dies. The principle of ER fluid-assisted polishing (ERP) is to use ER effect as a result of the application of electric field. The ER particles and abrasive particles suspended in silicone oil are polarized in which ER particles strongly attract each other and aggregate into chain like structure along the electric field lines, and the abrasive particles may adhere to the ER chain. The force acting on ER particles and abrasive particles in an electric field is calculated. Furthermore, experiments of polishing optical glass with Al2O3 are carried out to find the influential regularities of polishing time, rotational speed of micro-tool, voltage, the density of abrasives in ER fluid on the surface roughness.

Résumé :
The extremely small size of micro-/nanomaterials limits the application of conventional thermal measurement methods using a contact heating source or probing sensor. Therefore, non-contact thermal measurement methods are preferable in micro-/nanoscale thermal characterization. In this review, one of the non-contact thermal measurement methods, photothermal (PT) technique based on thermal radiation, is introduced. When subjected to laser heating with controllable modulation frequencies, surface thermal radiation carries fruitful information for thermal property determination. As thermal properties are closely related to the internal structure of materials, for micro-/nanomaterials, PT technique can measure not only thermal properties but also features in the micro-/nanostructure. Practical applications of PT technique in the thermal measurement of micro-/nanomaterials are then reviewed, including special wall-structure investigation in multiwall carbon nanotubes, porosity determination in nanomaterial assemblies, and the observation of amorphous/crystalline structure transformation in proteins in heat treatment. Furthermore, the limitations and future application extensions are discussed.

Résumé :
Among emerging Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDCs), molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has attracted a remarkable interest due to its many possible applications. In particular, MoS2 has potentialities not yet fully realized in solution-based applications. The morphological and the structural properties of MoS2 films deposited by spin-coating onto Si/SiO2 substrates were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Micro-Raman Spectroscopy. High resolution AFM imaging highlights the presence of a layered structure. The thickness of each layer is estimated to be around 13 nm. Micro-Raman measurements reveal that there is a coexistence between 2H-MoS2 and 1T-MoS2 phases, which could be useful for electrical applications. Moreover, the band at 290 cm−1 is assigned to the amorphous phase of MoS2. The detectability of the mode E1g in back scattering geometry is ascribed to the disorder of the amorphous phase.

Résumé :
In recent years, the development of fuel cells has proceeded rapidly, and so the reforming of methanol to produce hydrogen has become a serious problem. Supplying hydrogen from a micro methanol reformer to fuel cells is an important topic. The structure of a micro flow channel must support the transfer of external heat to the reform reaction, facilitating the diffusion of methanol vapor into the catalyst layer, increasing the rate of transfer of hydrogen. In this investigation, the micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technique is utilized to fabricate micro pressure, temperature and flow sensors. Polyimide film (PI) exhibits high temperature resistance and stress corrosion resistance, and is adopted herein as a flexible substrate. In future work, such micro sensors will be embedded in a micro methanol reformer for in-situ diagnosis.

Résumé :
Microbeams are widely used in micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). These systems are alternatives to piezo-resistive sensors because of their high sensitivity and low power consumption. Unlike with the classical theory of continuous media, in order to see the effects of the system being micro-sized, the effect of micro-structure was added to the system based on the modified couple stress theory (MCST) for fluid conveying microbeam. By using Hamilton’s principle, the nonlinear equations of motion for the fluid conveying micro beam were obtained. Microbeam was investigated under electrical field and resting on an elastic foundation. It is assumed that the fluid velocity changes harmonically around a constant velocity and that the electrical field force changes harmonically with time. Approximate solutions of the system were achieved by using the multiple time scale method. 3:1 and 2:1 internal resonance cases were investigated. Detuning parameter-amplitude variation graphs were obtained, and stability areas were shown.
