Résumé :
The Analytic Element Method provides a foundation to solve boundary value problems commonly encountered in engineering and science. The goals are: to introduce readers to the basic principles of the AEM, to provide a template for those interested in pursuing these methods, and to empower readers to extend the AEM paradigm to an even broader range of problems. A comprehensive paradigm: place an element within its landscape, formulate its interactions with other elements using linear series of influence functions, and then solve for its coefficients to match its boundary and interface conditions with nearly exact precision. Collectively, sets of elements interact to transform their environment, and these synergistic interactions are expanded upon for three common types of problems. The first problem studies a vector field that is directed from high to low values of a function, and applications include: groundwater flow, vadose zone seepage, incompressible fluid flow, thermal conduction and electrostatics. A second type of problem studies the interactions of elements with waves, with applications including water waves and acoustics. A third type of problem studies the interactions of elements with stresses and displacements, with applications in elasticity for structures and geomechanics. The Analytic Element Method paradigm comprehensively employs a background of existing methodology using complex functions, separation of variables and singular integral equations. This text puts forth new methods to solving important problems across engineering and science, and has a tremendous potential to broaden perspective and change the way problems are formulated.

Résumé :
This chapter discusses the use of the diary in qualitative research, the role of the researcher and the diarist, the format of the entries, the epistemological orientations underlying diary designs, and various types of diary studies. The diary has always been among the options in the qualitative methodological repertoire and actually predates other more common contemporary methods for data collection. Diary studies involve the standard tasks of any research project: reviewing the literature and identifying research questions; designing and carrying out a data collection protocol; and analyzing and discussing the data. The style of analysis depends upon the type of study conducted. This chapter will discuss the use of diaries in several types Descriptive, Constructionist, and Applied Research designs.

Résumé :
This chapter shows how Thucydides’ rigorous critical method and literary artistry combine to produce an intellectually penetrating and emotionally gripping account of the past. For Thucydides, the key to accuracy is his interpretation of the facts. But he also wanted his readers to experience events as he perceived them and thereby also experience the validity of his interpretations. In addition to analyzing Thucydides’ goals, the essay also discusses Thucydides’ approach to chronology, the types of evidence and modes of reasoning that he uses, his understanding of human nature, his distinction between true and alleged causes, and his use of literary techniques such as vivid detail, dialogue, and the rhetorical figure of hyperbole.

Osman, Abdul Kafi. Discover New Words Through the Innovative Vocabulary Acquisition Method. UUM Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.32890/9789672064817.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Innovative Vocabulary Acquisition Method (IVAM) helps to expand learners vocabulary acquisition by arousing or creating learners sense of curiosity to explore the meanings of words. IVAM is designed to inspire learners to visualize the images of their respective Commonly-Used Words (CUWs) and/ or Commonly-Seen Unfamiliar Words (CS-UWs) as they encountered other targeted Unfamiliar Words (UWs). The Referred Images (RIs) will induce learners to become curious about the Encountered Unfamiliar Words (EUWs) which partially or totally resemble, or almost appear like their CUWs, hence, creating the interest among language learners to explore their meanings. IVAM is formulated to help language learners to build or enhance their vocabulary acquisition. This method is very dynamic and can be customized to suit different learners language competencies. The method, as well as the book, is very practical for Level 2 primary school pupils, secondary school students, matriculation students and students in institutions of higher learning. The exercises in this book are aimed to assist users to enhance their grasp on the iVAM concept through various types of specially selected UWs or low frequency words. Hence, the book can be suitable as a workbook or an iVAM training module for teachers and parents. The method is also suitable for any English language learner who aspires to learn English as a second or a foreign language.

Rubin, Donald, Xiaoqin Wang, Li Yin et Elizabeth Zell. Bayesian causal inference : Approaches to estimating the effect of treating hospital type on cancer survival in Sweden using principal stratification. Sous la direction de Anthony O'Hagan et Mike West. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198703174.013.24.

Résumé :
This article discusses the use of Bayesian causal inference, and more specifically the posterior predictive approach of Rubin’s causal model (RCM) and methods of principal stratification, in estimating the effects of ‘treating hospital type’ on cancer survival. Using the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, as a case study, the article investigates which type of hospital (large patient volume vs. small volume) is superior for treating certain serious conditions. The study examines which factors may reasonably be considered ignorable in the context of covariates available, as well as non-compliance complications due to transfers between hospital types for treatment. The article first provides an overview of the general Bayesian approach to causal inference, primarily with ignorable treatment assignment, before introducing the proposed approach and motivating it using simple method-of-moments summary statistics. Finally, the results of simulation using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods are presented.

Cheng, Russell. The Pearson and Johnson Systems. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198505044.003.0009.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This chapter re-examines two of the best-known systems of parametric distributions: the Pearson and the Johnson. It is shown that, in the Pearson system, Pearson Types III and V are boundary embedded models of the main Types I, IV, and VI. A comprehensive way of finding the best type to fit is given using appropriate score statistics to guide a systematic search of all model types, including symmetric boundary models. Maximum likelihood estimation is used and details of its numerical implementation are given. Type IV can be a difficult model to fit. A method is discussed for this model that is reasonably robust, subject to certain restrictions on the parameter values. The same examination is made of the Johnson system where the lognormal, SL family is shown to be an embedded subsystem of both the main subsystems SB and SU. Two real data examples are given.

Résumé :
A discussion of community structure in networks and methods for its detection. The chapter begins with an introduction to the idea of community structure, followed by descriptions of a range of methods for finding communities, including modularity maximization, the InfoMap method, methods based on maximum-likelihood fits of models to network data, betweenness-based methods, and hierarchical clustering. Also discussed are methods for assessing algorithm performance, along with a summary of performance studies and their findings. The chapter concludes with a discussion of other types of large-scale structure in networks, such as overlapping and hierarchical communities, core-periphery structure, latent-space structure, and rank structure.

Résumé :
This chapter explains how the IRAC method of legal essay writing can be adapted for use with ‘discuss’ type questions, focusing on the following topics: what a ‘discuss’ question is asking you to do; how to structure the ‘discuss’ essay; and how to adapt each of the four IRAC steps (issue, rule, application, conclusion) to ‘discuss’ questions. The discussion also identifies the three basic types of ‘discuss’ questions (legal theory, legal reform and legal history) and describes the best way to approach each particular category of questions and the best types of legal authorities to introduce to do well. Tips on writing legal essays and exams are given.

Résumé :
The strength of ethnography is that it combines the insights of what people say about crime with what they do when they make the decision to commit crime. Participant observation has played a key role in ethnographic research on crime, but it has become rare in criminology. This chapter argues that despite this development, new types of camera-based observations are emerging that can potentially bring new life into ethnographic research on crime. The chapter distinguishes between three types of observational methods (participant, researcher, and camera), and it discusses insights that have been gained from each method. Camera observations offer exciting possibilities of gaining insights into what offenders do as criminal events unfold. Although these types of observations may replace researcher observations because of higher detail and reliability, participant observations remain most suitable for the study of the socioeconomic circumstances of offenders and their experiences with committing crimes.
