Résumé :
Abstract Several samples of dusts from steel and coke plants (collected mostly with electro filters) were subjected to the investigation of content of mineral phases in their particles. Additionally, sample of bog iron ore and metallurgical slurry was studied. Next, the magnetic susceptibility of all the samples was determined, and investigations of iron-containing phases were performed using transmission Mössbauer spectrometry. The values of mass-specific magnetic susceptibility χ varied in a wide range: from 59 to above 7000 × 10−8 m-3·kg−1. The low values are determined for bog iron ore, metallurgical slurry, and coke dusts. The extremely high χ was obtained for metallurgical dusts. The Mössbauer spectra and X-ray diffraction patterns point to the presence of the following phases containing iron: hematite and oxidized magnetite (in coke and metallurgical dusts as well as metallurgical slurry), traces of magnetite fine grains fraction (in metallurgical dusts), amorphous glassy silicates with paramagnetic Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions, traces of pyrrhotite (in coke dusts), α-Fe and nonstoichiometric wüstite (in metallurgical slurry), as well as ferrihydrite nanoparticles (in bog iron ore). For individual samples of metallurgical dusts, the relative contributions of Fe2+/3+ ions in octahedral B sites and Fe2+ ions in tetrahedral A sites in magnetite spinel structure differs considerably.

Résumé :
The article analyzes multiple definitions of enterprise investment policy. It reveals the scientists’ judgments on the essence of the enterprise investment policy and presents the term definitions integrated with the scientific approach, applying semantic-syntactic criteria in the ontological analysis methodology. In terms of the scientific approaches, suggested by the authors, the objectives of the industrial enterprise investment policy, methods for evaluating the investment policy in general, and the capital investment projects specifically are considered. The authors outline the main problematic issues that require further in-depth research. Differences in the objectives of the investment policy between the enterprises inside the branch, as well as factors of influence on institutional conditions of investment into the metallurgical industry are identified based on the analysis of the strategic profile of the national metallurgical companies and analytical data of the World Steel Association. The authors give the essential criteria of the investment activity efficiency in the field, among which are: fluctuation in world metal prices; the national currency exchange rate volatility; vertical integration in metallurgic enterprise management; oligopoly in the domestic metallurgical market. Approaches, proposed by the authors, are relevant both methodologically and practically, and encourage to further investigation of the enterprise investment policy and investment activity specifics in the metallurgical industry sector.

Résumé :
The metallurgical industry is important for Ukraine in strategic perspective, primarily for the development of economic situation of the country, the social sphere, as well as the issue of national security of Ukraine. The metallurgical industry generates more than 30% of GDP, and 40% of foreign exchange earnings in the economy are provided by this industry. However, under modern conditions, domestic metallurgical enterprises are unable to meet the challenges of the global crisis, especially ferrous metals overproduction, falling demand for low-quality metallurgical products, increasing number of competitors in world markets. A separate issue is fixed assets that are the leading factor in the successful operation of the production process. This paper is devoted to the investigation of the development status of metallurgical industry in Ukraine and its provision with fixed assets under modern economic conditions. In particular, the issue concerning the number of economic entities in the field of metallurgical industry of Ukraine and the number of employees at these enterprises and the factors influencing this indicator are highlighted in this paper. The dynamics of metallurgical enterprises sales, the structure of metallurgical production and the structure of foreign trade in terms of the papers of metal products sales are analyzed. Since the state of the metalworking industry can also be considered in terms of the enterprises provision with fixed assets, which maintain stable technological cycle, the rhythm of production and its quality, the essence of the term «fixed assets» is investigated in the scientific literature and indicators of the state and efficiency of fixed assets at the enterprises of Ukraine metalworking industry are analyzed. On the basis of the carried out investigations, we have come to the conclusion that this industry has a number of problems. Particular attention is paid to the reduction of employees number with relatively small fluctuations in the number of business entities in the metallurgical industry, which can cause a shortage of labor resources. In addition, despite the increase in the level of capital and capital efficiency and, consequently, the reduction of capital intensity, the issue of technologically obsolete, and therefore inconsistent with modern conditions of economic activity equipment, remains important at present.

Résumé :
Recycling of solid waste generated from metallurgical industries will avoid disposal of wastes, enhance the use of secondary raw material fines and save costs. Numerous hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes, or a combination of both, have been proposed for the utilization of metallurgical waste. Due to insufficient knowledge of the properties of these wastes, most of these attempts still have some technical difficulties. Investigation the properties of metallurgical waste is needed before choosing the suitable recycling process. The present work describes the chemical, morphological and mineralogical properties of blast furnace sludge (BFS) and basic oxygen furnace sludge (BOFS) produced in steel plants in Finland. The investigations indicated that BFS and BOFS show significant contents of iron and coke. The sludges also contain considerable concentrations of unwanted elements such as Zn. The authors propose that microwave dezincing followed by briquetting or pelletization represent a potential method for sludges recycling. Owing to high Fe and C content it can be utilized as self-reducing material.

Résumé :
The metallurgical behaviour of HSLA steel subjected to underwater explosion is of prime importance because of its structural applications in underwater vehicles. HSLA steel plates 300 × 250 × 4 mm were subjected to single and repetitive shock loadings and the point of rupture was identified. Test plates exhibited mode-I (large ductile deformation) and mode-II (tensile tearing) macroscopic failures. Electron micrographic and fractographic examination showed that the initiation of fracture was due to adiabatic shearing and the microscopic mode of failure was ductile. Plates subjected to single shock showed an increase in residual hardness and at the point of rupture it was approximately one-third higher than the initial residual hardness.

Résumé :
Niobium was recovered by acid-alkaline leaching from metallurgial residues. The experimental results indicate that effects of different leaching system and leaching conditions on the Nb recovery were different. Separation of niobium and impurities such as iron, manganese, calcium and silicon is essential for Nb recovery. Acid leaching distributed metals between the solid and solution. While about 98%Nb remains in the leached mud when alkaline sintering–leaching processed. According to the investigation of comprehensive process of acid-base, tungsten residue was leached with a double excess of 15%HCl at 60°C for 90mins,and leached mud was mixed with soda as W(soda)/W(residue) =0.37,then Sintered at 850°C for 90mins,gained concentrated material with 2.74%Nb2O5after leaching at 95°C for 60mins. 86.8%Nb remain in the mud. Product containing 15.8% Nb2O5was gained via decomposition by HF+H2SO4system and solvent extraction with MIBK. Wasted residue from alkali leaching of tin metallurgical slag were deal with the same conditions and concentrate containing 17.02% Nb2O5was gained.

Résumé :
This paper consists of the fabrication and investigation of metal membranes and the study of their behaviour and applications in gas separation processes. The scope is to produce and characterize the porous crystal structure of brass alloy (standardization: DIN 17660) membranes and measure their permeability with helium as a penetrant medium. Another part of this study is to alter the brass alloy’s structure throughout metallurgical treatments and investigate how the permeability is allied to the structure’s alteration. This work merges the knowledge and technology of inorganic porous materials science in metallurgy. The novelty of the current research resides in the process to alternate the brass alloy structure throughout metallurgical treatments and how it is allied to the permeability of the membrane, which is of interest to be investigated. The results of the research are analysed and compared conducting the final inferences. All metallurgical treatments resulted in low permeability values when compared to a non-treated specimen. Specifically, the drop in permeance ranged from 76 up to 99.56%. It is noted that consecutive treatments contributed to even further decreases.

Résumé :
Variations of cooling characteristics and solidification microstructure were investigated at various melt pouring temperature, mold temperature and cooling condition for semi-solid slurry of A356 alloy. And metallurgical and mechanical properties were examined with testing samples made by rheocast process based on the obtained cooling conditions. Undercooled state of melt appeared when superheating of melt was below 35, and it was easy to form equiaxed solidification structure. Forced cooling hardly ever contributed to globular shaping of microstructure although it helped a little to refine microstructure. And slow cooling through insulation and mold heating was effective to form globular shape. Also, the metallurgical and mechanical properties of samples made by this process were better than those of other sample made by conventional processes.

Résumé :
The impact resistance of aluminum foam sandwich panels (AFS) with metallurgical bonding interfaces prepared by the powder cladding rolling method was investigated. Low-velocity impact tests were conducted by using a drop-weight impact facility to explore the dynamic mechanical behavior, deformation and damage mechanisms, and energy absorption of AFS with metallurgical bonding interfaces. The effects of variation of impact energy, panel thickness, and specimen density on the energy absorption performance of AFS were quantitatively evaluated by energy absorption indicators. The results indicate that the load-displacement curve illustrates prominent three-stage characteristics when the impact energy is 120 J containing the front panel yielding stage, the foam core’s compressive and shear failure stage, and the back panel fracture stage. The impact strength of the sandwich structure increases with increasing panel thickness and specimen density. The AFS with metallurgical bonding interfaces presents favorable energy absorption efficiency under low velocity.

Résumé :
The processing of polymetallic materials provides some challenges to every flowsheet. Within Aurubis Cu-Pb-metallurgical flowsheet, a broad range of raw materials and intermediates are processed. Continuous improvements are required to adapt the flowsheet according to the changing material quantity and quality. Therefore, thermodynamic modeling is the desired and most efficient way to conduct scenario analysis. Hence, databases and software are becoming better and better as the acceptance of this method increased. Further understanding is promoted by conducting experimental test work to validate the calculated results. In this research work, the impact of various oxygen potential on the formation of the condensed phases’ slag, matte, speiss and crude lead were investigated. A frequent check of slag metallurgy, in particular, the iron and lead concentration, provide feedback if the metallurgical process is operating at the right oxygen potential. Following, the calculated distribution coefficients for Cu, Pb, As, Sb, Sn and Ni between matte/speiss and speiss/lead are discussed.

Résumé :
This study presents the analysis and characterization of the corrosive process in the metallic material that makes up the hull of a shipwreck in 1905 in the Baia de Todos os Santos in the city of Salvador - Bahia - Brazil. Samples were collected from fragments of the shipwreck's hull by scuba diving. The results obtained through techniques such as electrochemistry and scanning electron microscopy, allowed the analysis of the process and products of corrosion in the metallurgical structure, as well as metallography to verify the phases present in its structure after the manufacturing process in the last century. The constitution of the Black Adder's hull, built in 1869, consists of a low carbon steel alloy, containing high levels of impurities, mainly phosphorus and sulfur, demonstrating the low metallurgical quality of the time.

Résumé :
A vessel that has been damaged by a fire and/or explosion, suffered a mechanical failure, or had some sort of accident that resulted in injuries or property loss is almost always the subject of an investigation to determine the root cause and significant contributing factors. This paper describes the investigation process, including the skills and special knowledge that is often required for a complete investigation. Using several case investigations, the synergy of combining marine/mechanical and metallurgical testing and analyses is also discussed. Several engineering disciplines typically are required to recreate the sequence of events, components involved, and most probable causes. Such issues as maintenance, controls, design, and fail-safe performance are the domain of the marine/mechanical specialist. Determination of the failure mode, role of corrosion, thermal degradation, and materials selection issues are typically evaluated by a metallurgist. Design, materials selection, and component fabrication methods can become significant issues.

Résumé :
Abstract The extensive use of light metal material such as aluminum has brought about problems in its joining with steel. However, the weak metallurgical bonding between the dissimilar materials and the formation of hard and brittle intermetallic compounds (IMCs) lead to unsatisfactory joint strength. Aiming at achieving high-quality joining of aluminum and steel, 6061-T6 aluminum and 301L steel alloys were lap joined by ultrasonic assisted friction stir lap welding (UaFSLW) in this study. The UaFSLW joints were well formed with uniform flashes and even arc lines. The strong plastic flow of the aluminum material driven by the dual effects of mechanical stirring and ultrasonic vibration inhibited the excessive growth of the Al–Fe IMCs at the lap interface. Thanks to the enhanced metallurgical bonding and the effective control of the layer thickness of IMCs, the tensile load of the UaFSLW joint under 1,800 rpm reached 16.5 kN, which was an increase of 27.9% compared to that of the conventional FSLW joint.
