Texte intégralIt has become increasingly difficult to locate relevant information on the Web, even with the help of Web search engines. Two approaches to addressing the low precision and poor presentation of search results of current search tools are studied: meta-search and document categorization. Meta-search engines improve precision by selecting and integrating search results fromgeneric or domain-specific Web search engines or other resources. Document categorization promises better organization and presentation of retrieved results. This article introduces MetaSpider, a meta-search engine that has real-time indexing and categorizing functions. We report in this paper the major components of MetaSpider and discuss related technical approaches. Initial results of a user evaluation study comparing Meta- Spider, NorthernLight, and MetaCrawler in terms of clustering performance and of time and effort expended show that MetaSpider performed best in precision rate, but disclose no statistically significant differences in recall rate and time requirements. Our experimental study also reveals that MetaSpider exhibited a higher level of automation than the other two systems and facilitated efficient searching by providing the user with an organized, comprehensive view of the retrieved documents.

Texte intégralAs in many other applications, the rapid proliferation and unrestricted Web-based publishing of health-related content have made finding pertinent and useful healthcare information increasingly difficult. Although the development of healthcare information retrieval systems such as medical search engines and peer-reviewed medical Web directories has helped alleviate this information and cognitive overload problem, the effectiveness of these systems has been limited by low search precision, poor presentation of search results, and the required user search effort. To address these challenges, we have developed a domain-specific meta-search tool called Cancer Spider. By leveraging post-retrieval document clustering techniques, this system aids users in querying multiple medical data sources to gain an overview of the retrieved documents and locating answers of high quality to a wide spectrum of health questions. The system presents the retrieved documents to users in two different views: (1) Web pages organized by a list of key phrases, and (2) Web pages clustered into regions discussing different topics on a two-dimensional map (self-organizing map). In this paper, we present the major components of the Cancer Spider system and a user evaluation study designed to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach. Initial results comparing Cancer Spider with NLM Gateway, a premium medical search site, have shown that they achieved comparable performances measured by precision, recall, and F-measure. Cancer Spider required less user searching time, fewer documents that need to be browsed, and less user effort.

Texte intégralMedical decision-making requires a rigorous and up-to-date synthesis of research data. Systematic reviews (SR) and meta-analyses (MA) are the most rigorous method for producing these syntheses. Cochrane is an independent international organization whose mission is to produce and disseminate systematic reviews. We have performed RS and MA Cochrane on three chronic diseases in dermatology. Our objective was threefold: to produce a rigorous synthesis of the data, to propose ways of improving future research in these fields and finally to open up to meta-research projects. The first review aimed to evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of treatments for palmoplantarpustulosis, a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the presence of pustules on palms and plants. We included 36 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that encompassed a total of 1,504 patients. Overall, we found that the topical analogue of vitamin D (maxacalcitrol) was more effective than placebo in the short term; alitretinoin and three biological treatments (etanercept (anti TNF), ustekinumab (anti IL17-IL23) and guselkumab (anti IL23)) were no more effective than placebo (low degree of certainty); and secukinumab (anti IL17) was superior to placebo (moderate degree of certainty). In this first review, we observed a situation where no evidence was found for the main treatments (local corticosteroids, phototherapy, acitretin, methotrexate, and cyclosporine) used. Network meta-analysis is a statistical method for determining the relative effectiveness of all treatments, including comparisons that have not been evaluated in an RCT. This method was applied in the following two reviews. The objective of the second review was to evaluate the efficacy and relative safety of suppressive treatment with acyclovir, valaciclovir or famciclovir in genital herpes in the immunocompetent subject. We included 26 RCTs with a total of 6,950 patients. The results showed that acyclovir, famciclovir and valaciclovir reduced the risk of having at least one recurrence of genital herpes under treatment compared to placebo. The network meta-analysis revealed no statistically significant differences between treatments. No conclusions on adverse reactions could be drawn due to the poor quality of their description. The lack of direct comparison, the absence of the most relevant judgment criteria for patients, the risk of high and unclear bias in a majority of trials and a heterogeneity whose causes could not be explored alter the relevance and level of confidence in the results. The objective of the third review was to evaluate the efficacy and relative tolerance of systemic treatments for moderate to severe psoriasis in adults. We included 109 trials for a total of 39,882 patients. Seventy-four of these trials were included in the network meta-analysis. This study showed that ixekizumab was the best treatment. (versus placebo: RR 32.45, 95% CI 23.61 to 44.60; (high certainty), followed by secukinumab (high certainty), then brodalumab (moderate certainty), then guselkumab (moderate certainty), certolizumab (moderate certainty), and ustekinumab (high certainty). In this third review, the number of trials allowed us to conduct a network meta-analysis and classify the treatments. However, a number of points decreased the degree of confidence in the results: the few face-to-face trials, few trials evaluating and reporting on quality of life, the absence of long-term short evaluation and the inclusion of a selected population. These three reviews highlighted recurrent biases that could be applied to other chronic dermatological diseases, including the lack of face-to-face testing, primarily short term evaluations, and the lack of reports including a quality of life criterion. This work also provides guidance for future trials in these three areas in terms of comparisons to be made and bias to be avoided

For the past few years Chinese market has developed rapidly. Consequently, learning Chinese has gained much attention. In addition e-learning has become another way of learning, so the way to study Chinese through e-learning has already quite popular. But most Chinese learning websites on the Internet only offer Chinese example sentences that are collected in advance, so the quantity is quite limited, and very difficult to upgrade frequently. They support keyword search, but are unable to consider both the order of the keywords in the example sentences or the tone of the sentences (for example telling sentence, asking sentence or exclaiming sentences). In order to solve the above-mentioned problems, our research utilizes the characteristic of Meta-search, using Google to searching webpages which include keywords with Google, and then according to the setting which the user inquired about, for example the order of the words in the sentence and tone of the sentence, to sieve the example sentence from those web pages. The eligible example sentences are then sent to users. Because the content of the Internet grows up rapidly and continuously, through the practice of this research we can offer more example sentences to users to improve the user's results of learning performance.

This thesis aims to study the searching behaviors and results of different learner’s ability of meta-cognition on WebQuest and Yahoo search engine. Two classes’ students at 5th grade of elementary school were invited. All the learners have to pretest the questionnaire of meta-cognition before experiment. The experimental group carries on web searching activities using WebQuest and control group carries on web searching activities by the Yahoo search engine. Both learners of two groups have to utilize their websites to answer the searching task designed by the researcher. The statistics methods of product-moment correlation, two-way analysis of variance, independent-samples t test, and sequential analysis were conducted to analyze the data. The results showed that the learners with higher degree of evaluation have the better searching results than the learners with lower degree of evaluation when they used the WebQuest in web searching activities. As for the learners with high ability of meta-cognition have the better searching results than the learners with low ability of meta-cognition when they used the Yahoo searching engine in web searching activities.
