Résumé :
Nano-ZnO loaded mesoporous SiO2was prepared by sol-gel technology as a photocatalytic composite. XRD, SEM, TEM, EDX, and N2sorption isotherms were used to characterize the nano-ZnO/mesoporous SiO2. Acid Red 18 was used as simulated pollutant to determine the photocatalytic performance of nano-ZnO/mesoporous SiO2under ultraviolet light and solar light. The results showed that 6.4 nm ZnO was obtained and immobilized on mesoporous SiO2. Compared to the mesoporous SiO2, the surface area and average pore width of nano-ZnO/mesoporous SiO2were reduced by 12 m2/g and 0.7 nm, respectively. 50% ZnO content in a composite calcinated at 200∘C exhibited the best photocatalytic activity. The removal of Acid Red 18 under solar irradiation was 10% higher than ultraviolet light.

Résumé :
Highly crystalline ZnO/mesoporous hollow silica sphere (MHSS) composites have been successfully synthesized through an impregnation method at 323K without applying calcination. Three composites of different Zn/Si molar ratios of 1:2, 1:1, and 2:1 were prepared. X-Ray diffraction patterns confirmed the presence of highly crystalline ZnO in the materials. A layer of ZnO was formed on the MHSS as evidenced by field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis. Transmission electron microscopy analysis verified the mesoporous structure in ZnO/MHSS composites. N2 adsorption–desorption analysis indicated a type IV isotherm for 1ZnO/2MHSS and 1ZnO/1MHSS samples, confirming the presence of mesopores in the ZnO layer. It has been demonstrated that all the ZnO/MHSS composites exhibit a high photocatalytic activity towards sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate degradation compared with bare ZnO under UV irradiation. A kinetic study showed that the photodegradation followed a second order model. Among the prepared composites, 1ZnO/1MHSS recorded the highest reaction rate of 6.03×10−3mM−1min−1 which is attributed to a high crystallinity and the monodispersity of a high amount of ZnO on MHSS.

Résumé :
The electrical and thermal conductivities and the Seebeck coefficient of mesoporous ZnO thin films were investigated to determine the change of their thermoelectric properties by controlling surfactant concentration in the mesoporous ZnO films, because the thermoelectric properties of mesoporous ZnO films can be influenced by the porosity of the mesoporous structures, which is primarily determined by surfactant concentration in the films. Mesoporous ZnO thin films were successfully synthesized by using sol-gel and evaporation-induced self-assembly processes. Zinc acetate dihydrate and Brij-76 were used as the starting material and pore structure-forming template, respectively. The porosity of mesoporous ZnO thin films increased from 29% to 40% with increasing surfactant molar ratio. Porosity can be easily altered by controlling the molar ratio of surfactant/precursor. The electrical and thermal conductivity and Seebeck coefficients showed a close correlation with the porosity of the films, indicating that the thermoelectric properties of thin films can be changed by altering their porosity. Mesoporous ZnO thin films with the highest porosity had the best thermoelectric properties (the lowest thermal conductivity and the highest Seebeck coefficient) of the films examined.

Résumé :
A pulsed electrodeposition procedure has been developed to prepare macroporous films of the semiconducting mineral simonkolleite, Zn5(OH)8Cl2·H2O, on glass/FTO substrates. The morphology is characterized by the presence of smooth, micron-sized hexagonal platelets, and relatively thick films of 6 μm can be prepared in about 15 min. Simonkolleite can be transformed into crystalline, mesoporous ZnO using a relatively low temperature thermal treatment (250 °C). While the macrostructure of hexagonal platelets is maintained, they become mesoporous due to the removal of water and Cl−-containing reaction products. Dye-sensitized solar cells were fabricated with both simonkolleite and ZnO films, using the recently reported fully organic benzothiadiazole-based photosensitizer MG-207, and an electrolyte solution based on either the I−/I3 − or the Co(bpy)3 2+/3+ redox couple. An efficiency of 1.74% has been obtained for ZnO/MG-207/Co(bpy)3 2+/3+ solar cells, illustrating the promise of crystalline, mesoporous ZnO obtained via a low-temperature simonkolleite route for portable and lightweight devices based on flexible substrates.

Résumé :
Al-doped mesoporous ZnO thin films were synthesized by a sol-gel process and an evaporation-induced self-assembly process. In this work, the effects of Al doping concentration on the electrical conductivity and characterization of mesoporous ZnO thin films were investigated. By changing the Al doping concentration, ZnO grain growth is inhibited, and the mesoporous structure of ZnO is maintained during a relatively high temperature annealing process. The porosity of Al-doped mesoporous ZnO thin films increased slightly with increasing Al doping concentration. Finally, as electrical conductivity was increased as electrons were freed and pore structure was maintained by inhibiting grain growth, the thermoelectric property was enhanced with increasing Al concentration.

Résumé :
Mesoporous Al-doped ZnO thin films incorporated with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were synthesized using a sol–gel and evaporation-induced self-assembly process. In this study, the complementary effects of Au NP incorporation and Al doping on the thermoelectric properties of mesoporous ZnO thin films were analysed. The incorporated Au NPs induced an increase in electrical conductivity but a detriment in the pore arrangement of the mesoporous ZnO thin film, which was accompanied by a decrease in porosity. However, the addition of the Al dopant minimized the pore structural collapse because of the inhibition of the grain growth in the ZnO skeletal structure, resulting in the enhancement of the pore arrangement and porosity. When the Au NPs and Al dopant were added at the same time, the degradation in the pore structure was minimized and the electrical conductivity was effectively increased, but the absolute value of the Seebeck coefficient was decreased. However, as a result, the thermoelectric power factor was increased by 2.4 times compared to that of the pristine mesoporous ZnO thin film. It was found that co-introducing the Au NPs and Al doping to the mesoporous ZnO structure was effective in preserving the pore structure and increasing the electric conductivity, thereby enhancing the thermoelectric property of the mesoporous ZnO thin film.

Résumé :
ZnO-Immobilized mesoporous hollow silica spheres (ZnO/xMHSS; x = 15, 30, 50 molar ratio of Zn/Si) were synthesized and examined as photocatalysts toward the degradation of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS). The hollow structures of MHSS and ZnO-immobilized MHSS composite were evidenced by transmission electron microscopy analysis. X-ray diffraction results confirmed the presence of ZnO and a mesoporous structure in the synthesized materials. N2 adsorption–desorption analysis also depicted the formation of a mesoporous structure and the increased surface area for the ZnO/xMHSS materials. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis revealed the formation of Si–O–Zn bonds due to interaction between ZnO and MHSS. The photocatalytic testing results indicated that all the ZnO/xMHSS materials showed improved efficiencies of 10–21 % toward the photodegradation of SDBS when compared with bare ZnO. Among the prepared materials, ZnO/15MHSS was the best photocatalyst, which photodegraded 68 % SDBS after 1 h reaction. The kinetic study demonstrated that the photocatalytic reaction followed the second-order model.

Résumé :
This work demonstrates the fabrication of a novel three-dimensional (3D) mesoporous spherical ZnO nanoassembly by soft-chemical approach. XRD analysis revealed the formation of single phase hexagonal wurtzite nanostructure. It has been observed that each nanoassembly (100–600 nm) is comprised of numerous nanocrystals of size about 20 nm. These assemblies are fairly stable, well-defined, discrete and porous. The predominance of mesopores is evident from TEM and porosity measurements. Methylene blue (MB) was used as model dye to investigate the photocatalytic activity of ZnO nanoassemblies. These nanoassemblies have good photocatalytic performance due to its unique porous 3D nanostructure having defects. Furthermore, the ZnO nanoassemblies were also explored for the purification toxic metal ions such as Co2+ , Ni2+ , Cu2+ , Cd2+ , Pb2+ , Hg2+ and As3+ from waste-water.

The synthesized materials were characterized by thermo-gravimetry/differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Results reveal that few ZnO microspheres were formed after calcined at 700 °C while large quantity of non-spherical ZnO particles was produced. And the predominant hexagonal ZnO (h-ZnO) is attained when heated at 700 °C. Mesoporous SnO2 microspheres prepared at 800 °C possess an average size ~2.22 μm and a major tetragonal phase (t- SnO2) with crystallite size 7.8 nm.

Résumé :
Mesoporous ZnO/SnO2 (Zn : Sn = 2 : 1) composite nanofibers with diameter of 49±6 nm and pore size of 6.7 nm were fabricated via the electrospinning technique. Their structure and morphology were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) and nitrogen absorption-desorption isotherm analysis. The photocatalytic degradation rate of RhB dye by the mesoporous ZnO/SnO2 composite nanofibers was 0.051 min-1, which was more than two times and seven times of that by the pure ZnO (0.024 min-1) and pure SnO2 (0.007 min-1) nanofibers, respectively. The charge separation of electrons and holes was promoted and the recombination of the hole-electron pairs was reduced because of the coupling effect of ZnO and SnO2 in the grain-like composite nanoparticles, thus the quantum efficiency was increased. A schematic diagram of photocatalytic mechanism of mesoporous ZnO/SnO2 composite nanofibers was presented.

Résumé :
ZnO and Ti-doped ZnO (Ti-ZnO) nanoparticles were synthesized using rapid combustion. The morphology of ZnO and Ti-ZnO featured nanoparticles within cluster-like structures. The ZnO and Ti-ZnO structures exhibited similar hexagonal wurtzite structures and crystal sizes. This behavior occurred because Zn2+ sites of the ZnO lattice were substituted by Ti4+ ions. The chemical structure characterization implied the major vibration of the ZnO structure. The physisorption analysis showed similar mesoporous and non-rigid aggregation structures for ZnO and Ti-ZnO using N2 adsorption–desorption. However, Ti-ZnO demonstrated a specific surface area two times higher than that of ZnO. This was a major factor in improving the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB). The photocatalytic degradation analysis showed a kinetic degradation rate constant of 2.54 × 10−3 min−1 for Ti-ZnO, which was almost 80% higher than that of ZnO (1.40 × 10−3 min−1). The transformation mechanism of MB molecules into other products, including carbon dioxide, aldehyde, and sulfate ions, was also examined.

Résumé :
In recent years, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have gained major attention as potentially useful photovoltaic technology due to their ever-increasing power-conversion efficiency (PCE). The efficiency of PSCs depends strongly on the type of materials selected as the electron transport layer (ETL). TiO2 is the most widely used electron transport material for the n-i-p structure of PSCs. Nevertheless, ZnO is a promising candidate owing to its high transparency, suitable energy band structure, and high electron mobility. In this investigation, hybrid mesoporous TiO2/ZnO ETL was fabricated for a perovskite solar cell composed of FTO-coated glass/compact TiO2/mesoporous ETL/FAPbI3/2D perovskite/Spiro-OMeTAD/Au. The influence of ZnO nanostructures with different percentage weight contents on the photovoltaic performance was investigated. It was found that the addition of ZnO had no significant effect on the surface topography, structure, and optical properties of the hybrid mesoporous electron-transport layer but strongly affected the electrical properties of PSCs. The best efficiency rate of 18.24% has been obtained for PSCs with 2 wt.% ZnO.

Résumé :
Zinc-enriched mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBGs) are bioceramics with potential antibacterial and osteogenic properties. However, few assays have been performed to study these properties in animal models. In this study, MBGs enriched with up to 5% ZnO were synthesized, physicochemically characterized, and evaluated for their osteogenic activity both in vitro and in vivo. The ZnO MBGs showed excellent textural properties despite ZnO incorporation. However, the release of Zn2+ ions inhibited the mineralization process when immersed in simulated body fluid. In vitro assays showed significantly higher values of viability and expression of early markers of cell differentiation and angiogenesis in a ZnO-content-dependent manner. The next step was to study the osteogenic potential in a sheep bone defect model. Despite their excellent textural properties and cellular response in vitro, the ZnO MBGs were not able to integrate into the bone tissue, which can be explained in terms of inhibition of the mineralization process caused by Zn2+ ions. This work highlights the need to develop nanostructured materials for bone regeneration that can mineralize to interact with bone tissue and induce the processes of implant acceptance, cell colonization by osteogenic cells, and regeneration of lost bone tissue.

For the first time, we in this study prepared uniform MoS2 nanoparticles on ZnO mesoporous. XRD patterns established that the synthesized ZnO and MoS2/ZnO samples were composed of ZnO phase. The TEM results revealed that MoS2 and ZnO were very close to each other, with 4–8 nm in sizes of particles. The MoS2/ZnO nanocomposites have many advantages, and some of these advantages are large surface area (105 m2g–1 and large pore volume (0.19 cm3g–1. Foron blue dye degradation over 3 wt% MoS2/ZnO nanocomposite was 254 times larger than that of mesoporous zinc oxide. Also, Foron blue dye degradation over 3 wt% MoS2/ZnO nanocomposite was 1.8 and 1.2 times greater than that of 0.5 wt% MoS2/ZnO and 1 wt% MoS2/ZnO nanocomposite, respectively. The increased Foron blue dye degradation by increase wt% of MoS2, due to increased separation of charge carrier and high capacity of light-harvesting. Moreover, high foron blue dye degradation was due to formation of a heterostructure between ZnO and MoS2, which accelerated charge carrier separation and improved degradation efficiency. The XPS and HRTEM results revealed that the MoS2 nanoparticles were deposited on the ZnO surface.

Résumé :
Oxide inverse opals (IOs) with their high surface area and open porosity are promising candidates for catalyst support applications. Supports with confined mesoporous domains are of added value to heterogeneous catalysis. However, the fabrication of IOs with mesoporous or sub-macroporous voids (<100 nm) continues to be a challenge, and the diffusion of tracers in quasi-mesoporous IOs is yet to be adequately studied. In order to address these two problems, we synthesized ZnO IOs films with tunable pore sizes using chemical bath deposition and template-based approach. By decreasing the size of polystyrene (PS) template particles towards the mesoporous range, ZnO IOs with 50 nm-sized pores and open porosity were synthesized. The effect of the template-removal method on the pore geometry (spherical vs. gyroidal) was studied. The infiltration depth in the template was determined, and the factors influencing infiltration were assessed. The crystallinity and photonic stop-band of the IOs were studied using X-Ray diffraction and UV-Vis, respectively. The infiltration of tracer molecules (Alexa Fluor 488) in multilayered quasi-mesoporous ZnO IOs was confirmed via confocal laser scanning microscopy, while fluorescence correlation spectroscopy analysis revealed two distinct diffusion times in IOs assigned to diffusion through the pores (fast) and adsorption on the pore walls (slow).

Résumé :
Mesoporous Bioactive Glasses (MBGs) are a family of bioceramics widely investigated for their putative clinical use as scaffolds for bone regeneration. Their outstanding textural properties allow for high bioactivity when compared with other bioactive materials. Moreover, their great pore volumes allow these glasses to be loaded with a wide range of biomolecules to stimulate new bone formation. In this study, an MBG with a composition, in mol%, of 80% SiO2–15% CaO–5% P2O5 (Blank, BL) was compared with two analogous glasses containing 4% and 5% of ZnO (4ZN and 5ZN) before and after impregnation with osteostatin, a C-terminal peptide from a parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP107-111). Zn2+ ions were included in the glass for their bone growth stimulator properties, whereas osteostatin was added for its osteogenic properties. Glasses were characterized, and their cytocompatibility investigated, in pre-osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cell cultures. The simultaneous additions of osteostatin and Zn2+ ions provoked enhanced MC3T3-E1 cell viability and a higher differentiation capacity, compared with either raw BL or MBGs supplemented only with osteostatin or Zn2+. These in vitro results show that osteostatin enhances the osteogenic effect of Zn2+-enriched glasses, suggesting the potential of this combined approach in bone tissue engineering applications.

Résumé :
Due to increasingly stringent environmental regulations imposed by governments throughout the world, the manufacture of low-sulfur fuels has received considerable assiduity in the petroleum industry. In this investigation, mesoporous V2O5-decorated two-dimensional ZnO nanocrystals were manufactured using a simple surfactant-assisted sol–gel method for thiophene photocatalytic oxidative desulfurization (TPOD) at ambient temperature applying visible illumination. When correlated to pure ZnO NCs, V2O5-added ZnO nanocomposites dramatically improved the photocatalytic desulfurization of thiophene, and the reaction was shown to follow the pseudo-first-order model. The photocatalytic effectiveness of the 3.0 wt.% V2O5-ZnO photocatalyst was the greatest among all the other samples, with a rate constant of 0.0166 min−1, which was 30.7 significantly greater than that of pure ZnO NCs (0.00054 min−1). Compared with ZnO NCs, and owing to their synergetic effects, substantial creation of hydroxyl radical levels, lesser light scattering action, quick transport of thiophene species to the active recenters, and efficient visible-light gathering, V2O5-ZnO nanocomposites were found to have enhanced photocatalytic efficiency. V2O5-ZnO nanocomposites demonstrated outstanding stability during TPOD. Using mesoporous V2O5-ZnO nanocomposites, the mechanism of the charge separation process was postulated.

Résumé :
The series of ZnO-SBA-15 catalysts with 0.9wt% to 8.5wt% ZnO content have been synthesized by solvothermal impregnated of Zn acetate in ethanol on mesoporous silica SBA-15 platelets in order to maximize the methyl ester selectivity in transesterification reaction. The properties of these catalyst were characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, NH3 temperature-programmed desorption, SEM, and XRD. The results showed that the ordered mesoporous structure of SBA-15 was remained with specific surface areas above 500 m2/g and a narrow pore size distribution observed with the mean pore size around 60 Å after ZnO modification. The strength of the acid sites and total acid amount of ZnO-SBA-15 catalysts is varied with number of ZnO loadings. The synthesized ZnO-SBA-15 catalyst was tested for catalytic activity in transesterification of crude Jatropha oil. It was found that at 200 °C for 2 h reaction of the ZnO-SBA-15 catalysts with acid capacities of 0.36-1.29 mmol H+/g-catal gave 68-98wt% of FAME yields and 0.4-1.4wt% of FFA yields which are comparable to the pure ZnO.

Résumé :
The ZnO particles with mesoporous and lamellar structure were synthesized in the method of precipitation, using zinc acetate as precursor. The ZnO particles were characterized by the means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and N2 adsorption–desorption measurements. The photoactivity of as-prepared ZnO particles was evaluated by degradation experiment of methyl orange aqueous solution. The results showed the obtained ZnO particles were irregular polygons with lamellar structure, and the particle size was in the range of 50 nm to 300 nm. According to XRD and N2 absorption results, ZnO particles were pure and integrated crystals with high crystallinity, and adsorption-desorption isotherms correspond to the typical type IV isotherm with a hysteresis loop of type H3, which showed ZnO particles had mesoporous structure with slit pore shape. The ZnO particles had high photocatalytic activity, the maximum degradation rate of methyl orange aqueous solution can reach 99%. When reused for the fifth time, the photocatalytic activity of ZnO particles was similar with the fresh ones, and recycled for the tenth time, the degradation rate of methyl orange aqueous solution still standed by 84.7%.

Résumé :
Nanowire-mesoporous network structured fluorocarbon polymer films were prepared by radio-frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering of a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) target on a poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) substrate. The fluorocarbon films were used as precursor materials to prepare fluorocarbon/ZnO double-layered hybrid films by reaction sputtering of a Zn target on the fluorocarbon films. The hybrid films had strong UV absorption that was far larger than the sum of the individual absorptions of fluorocarbon film and ZnO film because of a synergistic effect. The hybrid films exhibited multi-enhanced ultraviolet absorption due to the π-conjugated molecular structure, the nanoparticle-mesoporous reflection of fluorocarbon polymer films, and the absorption effect of nanosized ZnO particles.

Résumé :
As part of concepts for chemical energy storage of excess chemical energy produced from renewable sources, we investigated the performance of CuO/ZnO catalysts supported on mesoporous carbon to convert CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. In this work, mesoporous carbon was used as the catalyst support for CuO-ZnO catalysts. Four catalysts with different precipitated precursors were synthesized and analyzed by N2-physisorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that catalyst CZ-in situ had the highest turnover frequency (TOF) (2.8 × 10−3 s−1) and methanol production rate (0.8 mmol g−1·h−1). The catalysts for co-precipitation of copper and zinc on carbon precursors are more active. Cu/ZnO domains that are accessible to the reactant gas are another reason for the catalysts being active. The Cu-ZnO interface is crucial to methanol catalyst activity.

Résumé :
As a drug delivery system (DDS), traditional mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) suffer from bioaccumulation in vivo and premature drug release in systemic circulation due to low degradation rate and lack of protective gatekeeper. Herein, we developed a safe and intelligent DDS with characteristics of pH-responsive biodegradation and controlled drug release based on mesoporous silica composite nanoparticles (MSCNs) capped with ZnO quantum dots (ZnO QDs). Acidic degradable MSCNs were successfully synthesized by doping Ca2+ and PO43− into the MSNs’ framework. The in vitro doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) release was inhibited at neutral pH 7.4 but triggered significantly at pH 5.0 due to the dissociation of ZnO caps. The internalization behavior and cytotoxicity of 4T1 cells indicated MSCNs-ZnO could efficiently deliver DOX into the cells with significant antitumor activity. Such a DDS with pH-responsive biodegradation and controlled drug release has promising potential for cancer therapy.

Résumé :
This article is devoted to TiO2/ZnO nanocomposites’ creation by modifying with the commercial TiO2/P90 product using the impregnation method and identifying the effect of the ZnO modifier on its adsorption, structural, photocatalytic, and electrical properties. The synthesized TiO2/ZnO nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, XRF, XPS, and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption methods. As a result, nanostructured TiO2/ZnO composites with the ZnO content of 2, 5, 10, and 15% were obtained. It was shown that the phase composition of TiO2/P90 does not change during the nanocomposite synthesis. XPS studies of TiO2/ZnO nanocomposites indicated the presence of Ti4+, Zn2+, O2−, and OH states on their surface, which is associated with TiO2, ZnO, and hydroxide ions. The nitrogen adsorption-desorption method showed that the commercial TiO2/P90 sample is nonporous, and all TiO2/ZnO nanocomposites are characterized by almost the same homogeneous mesoporous structure. Experimentally established sorption and photocatalytic properties depend on the specific surface area and electrostatic interaction with dyes. The effect of the ZnO modifier on I-V characteristics of the TiO2/P90 sample was revealed. The obtained experimental data showed that the TiO2/P90 sample contains one type of current carriers, and TiO2/2ZnO and TiO2/5ZnO nanocomposites are characterized by two types of current carriers.

Résumé :
Photocatalytic water splitting into hydrogen is regarded as one of the key solutions to the deterioration of the global environment and energy. Due to the significantly reduced grain boundaries, ZnO nanorods facilitate a fast electron transfer through their smooth tunnels and are well suited as a photocatalyst. However, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of pristine ZnO nanorods is still low due to the high recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and the less light absorption. Here, a novel structure about black ZnO nanorods (NRs)/TiO2-X mesoporous spheres (MSs) heterojunction has been prepared and the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance has been explored. The photocatalytic activity test results showed that ZnO NRs/TiO2-X MSs exhibited higher catalytic activity than ZnO NRs for hydrogen production. Compared to the pure ZnO NRs photoanode, the photocurrent of ZnO NRs/TiO2-X MSs heterojunction photoanode could reach 0.41 mA/cm2 in view of the expanding spectral response region and effective inhibition of e−/h+ recombination at the same condition. Using a relatively integrated experimental investigation and mechanism analysis, we scrutinized that after being treated with NaBH4, TiO2 MSs introduce oxygen vacancies expanding the photocatalytic activity of pure TiO2, and improving conductivity and charge transport capabilities through coating on ZnO NRs. More importantly, the results provide a promising approach in the NRs/MSs composite structure serving as photoanodes for photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Résumé :
Mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs) are widely recognized for their ability to bond to hard tissue, while the ions released from the BG structure enhance specific cellular pathways. In this study, the SiO2-P2O5-CaO-MgO-ZnO system was used to successfully synthesize MBGNs by a microemulsion-assisted sol-gel method. The MBGNs calcinated at 600 °C/3 h had a typical phosphosilicate structure together with a poorly crystalline hydroxyapatite (HAp). The addition of ZnO not only led to a higher degree of crystallinity of HAp but also induced a higher porosity of the particles. All MBGNs had a mesoporous structure with an interconnected network of slit shape pores. For each type of composition, two families of highly dispersed spherical nanoparticles could be identified. In vitro tests in simulated body fluid (SBF) proved that after only 3 days of immersion all the materials were covered with a layer of brushite whose degree of crystallinity decreases in the presence of Zn2+. The antibacterial assay revealed a strong inhibitory effect for all samples after 40 h of contact. Simultaneously, MBGNs did not increase the intracellular oxidative stress while it stimulated the cell proliferation process.

Résumé :
Catalysts based on Cu/CuO–ZnO supported on mesoporous carbon (FDU-15) were synthesised and tested for methanol production from CO2 and H2. The catalytic activity was strongly dependent on the method by which the Cu and Zn components were loaded onto the carbon support. Three synthetic methods were trialled and the materials produced were characterised by various techniques. The materials with better contact between the Cu/CuO and ZnO particles were catalytically more active towards methanol production (CZC-3 > CZC-2 > CZC-1). The methanol production rate for CZC-3 (7.3 mmol g–1 h–1) was higher, on a catalyst weight basis, than that of a commercial catalyst (5.6 mmol g–1 h–1). Also, CZC-3 had a higher turnover frequency (1.8 × 10–2 s–1) than the commercial catalyst (0.2 × 10–2 s–1). This work demonstrates that Cu/CuO and ZnO particles supported on mesoporous carbon, prepared by an appropriate method, are promising catalysts for methanol synthesis from carbon dioxide.
