Résumé :
Mental time travel (MTT), the ability to travel mentally back and forward in time in order to reexperience past events and preexperience future events, is crucial in human cognition. As we move along life, MTT may be changed accordingly. However, the relation between re- and preexperiencing along the lifespan is still not clear. Here, young and older adults underwent a psychophysical paradigm assessing two different components of MTT: self-projection, which is the ability to project the self towards a past or a future location of the mental time line, and self-reference, which is the ability to determine whether events are located in the past or future in reference to that given self-location. Aged individuals performed worse in both self-projection to the future and self-reference to future events compared to young individuals. In addition, aging decreased older adults’ preference for personal compared to nonpersonal events. These results demonstrate the impact of MTT and self-processing on subjective time processing in healthy aging. Changes in memory functions in aged people may therefore be related not only to memory per se, but also to the relations of memory and self.

Résumé :
Data for non-urgent undergraduate clients at a University Counseling Center (UCC) were collected using on-line surveys over three time-periods. Despite the expected diminishing number of participants over time, within-time correlations generally showed that level of mental distress and mental health concerns were negatively related to life satisfaction, while self-esteem was positively related. Using a smaller sample of matched-over-three time-periods clients, levels of mental distress and mental health concerns significantly declined, while life satisfaction significantly increased. The strongest changes for this complete data sample were found from Time 1 to Time 3 for reduced mental health concerns and increased life satisfaction. These findings reinforce that additional counseling sessions for undergraduates may be beneficial, and that spreading these sessions out may also be useful. Scientifically demonstrating to higher-level University administration that a UCC can help undergraduates in distress should ideally help the UCC to increase its allocation of university-based resources.

In the last decades, much research across different domains has been devoted to the investigation of spatial-congruity effects and various research showed that humans process information related to time and magnitude by representing it in spatial terms. As a result, the concepts of Mental Number Line (MNL) and of Mental Time Line (MTL) have been proposed. The horizontal MNL and MTL are spatial continua on which small numbers and earlier events are represented on the left and larger numbers and later events are represented on the right of the line. From a psycholinguistic perspective, there are other types of information related to magnitude and time that can be explored in spatial terms. In this doctoral dissertation, I investigate spatial association of linguistic inputs by exploring two phenomena which have not been considered in spatial terms: vague quantifiers and sub-lexical verb endings. I investigated whether vague quantifiers both presented in isolation (Chapters 2-4) and embedded in sentences (Chapter 3), were spatially represented. In Chapter 5 I investigated whether sub-lexical strings, namely verb endings, carry conceptual information about time and are able to activate the Mental Time Line. Results showed that vague quantifiers are subjected to a response-side compatibility effect, that I defined as SLARC effect, according to which Low-Magnitude quantifiers, such as pochi (“few”) or alcuni (“some”), were responded to faster with the left hand and High-Magnitude quantifiers, such as molti (“many”) or parecchi (“several”), were responded to faster with the right hand (Chapter 2). I then demonstrate that quantifiers’ magnitude can be successfully manipulated by the linguistic context and that the spatial-association effect can be blurred by a working-memory effect (Chapter 3). Results from Chapter 4 showed that quantifiers can be mentally ordered, although in a flexible format, according to their magnitude. In Chapter 5 I showed that verb-endings successfully activate the MTL and that the spatial temporal congruency effect strongly emerged both when the tense of the stimuli was relevant and when it was not relevant to the task. The results of this dissertation provide novel insights about spatial representations of linguistic stimuli related to magnitude, through the exploration of vague quantifiers, and to time, through the exploration of tensed verbs and tense-related sub-strings. Overall, these findings support the idea that there is a general tendency to transform also linguistic knowledge into spatial representations.

Résumé :
Associations between space, time, numbers and quantities have suggested that there must be a shared representational format which underlies them. One of the more prominent theories of an underlying system of representation is that of ATOM, which suggests that the there exists a generalized system of magnitude which processes these dimensions. However, there has been no study that examines whether speed is also processed within such a system. This study investigates this by seeing if a SNARC or Problem-Size effect arise in two speed estimation tests. The fundamental task for the participants in both tests was to judge which of two stimuli was the fastest, with the stimuli moving towards a wall located in the center of a computer screen. Their correct discrimination and response time was recorded. The results found that there were no significant results for either effect. This might be due to low sample size, methodological difficulties, and low robustness. Future research might amend these difficulties by having a more consistent setup with more trials reflecting the effect being tested and fix some potential problems with the test environment.

Stanback, Brianne. « Tarnished Golden Years : Older Offenders with Mental Health Problems and Late Life First Time Offenders ». Scholar Commons, 2011. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3364.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Older offenders (offenders 50 years and older) are a distinct groups within the U.S. correctional system. Studies 1 and 2 were intended to investigate mental health and stressors among jailed older offenders. Study 1 examined the prevalence rates of mental health disorders and explored the relationship between mental health disorders and stressors. Participants 50 years and older (N=330) from the 2002 wave of the Survey of Inmates in Local Jails (SILJ) were studied via descriptive analysis, factor analysis, and a logistic regression to determine which variables were related to the probability of having a mental health problem. 65.8% of participants had at least one mental health disorder, with high rates of substance abuse reported. Individuals who were between 50-59 years of age (compared with those over 60) and individuals who were unmarried had a significantly increased likelihood of being in the group with mental health problems. Caucasians and participants with fewer instances of childhood abuse were significantly less likely to be in the group with mental health problems. Study 2 compared stressors over the life course between late life first time offenders (offenders whose first arrest occurred at age 50 or older; hereafter LLFTO) and habitual older offenders, who had one or more arrests. This study descriptively and comparatively analyzed individuals who were age 50 or older at arrest and reported their age of first arrest from the 1996 and 2002 waves of SILJ, with a final sample of 62 LLFTOs and 357 older offenders with previous arrests. LLFTOs were significantly older, more likely to be married, and more likely to be female. Over the life course, LLFTOs were more likely to have lived with their father or other relative as children, were less likely to have used alcohol or had friends with a history of delinquency as adolescents, and were less likely to have been homeless as adults. This dissertation research shows that older offenders have a variety of needs during their incarceration that may persist upon release. Addressing mental health disorders, and stressors across the life span, is needed to promote successful aging.

The study has as objective the discussion about the insertion of the leisure activities in the everyday of the Mental Health services users. The relevance of the work is affirmed by the expanding demand for this kind of activity, wich access is restricted. The presented questions have their origin in observations accomplished by an activity called Copa da Inclusão (Inclusion Cup) that gathers Mental Health services located in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. It constitutes in a meeting of users, professionals, relatives and friends. The purposeof the event is promoting the access to leisure activities wich shortage highlights the lack of oportunities provided to then. The leisure aspect is an essential component in the men´s life. It makes possible the liberation of the everyday obligations. From these activities may occur a breakup of the repetitive, stereotyped and alienated way of living. In this space is possible the creative and transformer expression that reflects in others aspects of life. We investigated the elements that compose and define the everyday life of the interviwed people. From this context we verified the transformations that these practices may promote in the their lives. We find the way that this kind of activity can constitute a space that enable for the user the comprehension of the ill role and the imposed limits by this socially built condition. Promotes the social insertion of the user when recognizes his capacities, necessities and desires. Three enterviews were achieved with users of differents services of Mental Health located in the city of São Paulo. The analysis of the data collected in the interviews is accomplished from the Social Psychology theory formulated by Enrique Pichon-Rivière. We identified thematic nucleuses wich we refer: the house, the work, the health service as a bridge and view of the disease.

Résumé :
This doctoral dissertation examine the specific role of the self-concept and of its different dimensions on the evolution of anorexic symptoms over a period of 140 consecutive days. in two different samples comprising 26 anorexic outpatients and inpatients and in 23 girls without eating disorders (ED). By applying an idiographic approach, the main results show that the level, instability and dynamic of self-concept dimensions, and more precisely of body attractiveness, represent potent predictors of psychological, behavioral (e.g. full score of Eating Disorders Inventory-Adolescent, EDI-A-24) and somatic (e.g. Body Mass Index, BMI) anorexic symptoms over medium (i.e. over a few months), short (i.e. over a few weeks) and very short (i.e. over a few days) periods of time. Moreover, multivariate regression analyses further show that the pattern of association between anorexic symptoms and self concept dimensions remains the same in both samples (anorexic and without ED). Moreover, the results of cross-correlations analyses reveal that anorexic symptoms are as unstable as the dimensions of self-concept, with which they appear to be intertwined. More precisely, body attractiveness, most often a) precedes the drive for thinness, b) is associated to bulimia according to a"vicious circle" phenomenon, and c) fluctuates with according to body dissatisfaction. However body attractiveness was not found to relate to anorexic girls final status at the end of the follow-up period (e.g. deterioration, improvement, stabilization, etc). Finally, the results from a qualitative analysis suggest that social events experienced as positive contribute to the improvement of anorexia nervosa. This appears to be explained by the potential of these events to break through anorectic girls known ego-centered tendencies. Taken as a whole, the 'results highlight the necessity of considering overall of dimensions of self-esteem and the"profiles" of girls with and without ED in preventive and therapeutic interventions for ED.

Some authors support that mental time travel is unique to humans. To their point of view, animals are not able to project themselves into the past of the future because they are bound into the present. Nevertheless, during the last 30 years, researchers have brought considerable knowledge on animals’ capacities to travel mentally through time. Even though opinions have evolved, the debate concerning the unicity of mental time travel is still on. My PhD thesis aimed at bringing further knowledge on this matter by focusing on an innovative aspect of episodic cognition in common cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis and Eurasian jay, Garrulus glandarius, namely, source-memory. Source-memory is the capacity to retrieve the origin of an episodic memory. Results showed that cuttlefish were able to perform a source-discrimination study, revealing that they were able to discriminate and retrieve their own perceptions after 3-hours delay. A study on jays’ capacity to encode incidentally a contextual information (contextual source) revealed unexpected differences between males and females. Investigation of future-oriented behaviour in cuttlefish showed that they were able to take a decision in the present according to previous encoded knowledge and according to future experimental conditions. A preliminary study also revealed promising results on cuttlefish capacity to anticipate their future needs. To finish, we explored and revealed for the first time the neuronal substrates of episodic-like memory in cuttlefish. Alltogether, these results provide new knowledge on mental time travel in cuttlefish and in jays, suggesting that this capacity would have evolved under different environmental contraints

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Abstract Peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.) oil is one of the most popular and widely used essential oils, mostly because of its main components menthol and menthone. Peppermint oil is used for flavouring pharmaceuticals and oral preparations. Corn mint is the richest source of natural menthol. Carvone-scented mint plants, such as spearmint (M. spicata), are rich in carvone and are widely used as spices, and they are cultivated in several countries. Studies were made into the yield and essential oil content of several mint species and the original. The general aim of the work was to examine the optimal conditions for cultivating mint in Northern Finland. The specific aims of the study were (first) to investigate the differences in the oil content for several mint species and (secondly) to compare the effect of various factors such as plant spacing (10, 20 and 30 × 50 cm), liming (0, 4, 8, 12 and 16 tons ha-1), propagation methods (micropropagated and conventionally propagated plants) and harvest date (once at the end of August in comparison with first cut at the beginning of August and second cut in mid September) on the cultivation success, quality and quantity of the plants. The constituents of the essential oil were analysed from leaf samples using GC-MS. Among the peppermints of different origins studied, peppermint of USA and Egypt origin ('Black Mitcham') contain the highest menthol and optimum oil yield. Corn mint and Sachalin mints both had high menthol content. Due to several reasons, such as no significant differences between the different densities and oil composition, markedly higher amount of weeds at 30 × 50 cm than at 10 × 50 and 20 × 50 cm spacing and the high seedling costs and the danger of fungi and disease at a 10 × 50 cm spacing, a plant optimum of 20 × 50 cm spacing is recommended for Northern Ostrobothnia. If the pH value is lower than 6, or levels of Mg and Ca are low, liming at a rate of 4–8 t ha-1 for sandy soils in Finland is recommended in order to achieve higher fresh and oil yields. In the first year, there were no differences in the dry leaf yield of micropropagated and conventionally propagated plants, but the menthol content was significantly higher in conventionally than in micropropagated plants. In the second year, only the dry leaf yield of micropropagated plants was higher than that of their conventionally propagated counterparts. Cutting peppermint only once during full bloom (the end of August) gives the maximum oil yield of good quality. In conclusion, it is possible to achieve as high as or even higher oil quality and dry yield in North Ostrobothnia than it is in central Europe or south Asia. However, this requires observing certain cultivation factors such as having the right type of mint, soil pH, planting density, harvesting time and propagation method In addition, mints must be cultivated in the same place for only two and a maximum for three years.

The hegemonic meaning of depression as a universal mental illness embodied by an individualized subject is propped up by psychiatry’s clinical gaze. Cinemas of Therapeutic Activism turns to the work of contemporary filmmakers who express a shared concern for mental health under global capitalism to explore how else depression can be perceived. In taking their critical visions as intercessors for thought, Adam Szymanski proposes a thoroughly relational understanding of depression attentive to eventful, collective and contingent qualities of subjectivity. What emerges is a melancholy aesthetics attuned to the existential contours and political stakes of health. Cinemas of Therapeutic Activism adventurously builds affinities across the lines of national, linguistic and cultural difference. The films of Angela Schanelec, Kelly Reichardt, Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Kanakan Balintagos are grouped together for the first time, constituting a polystylistic common front of artist-physicians who live, work, and create on the belief that life can be more liveable.

Résumé :
AbstractThis chapter presents the fundamentals of indefinite incarceration in Switzerland. It starts with a description of the legal definition of indefinite confinement—that is, indefinite incarceration and the in-patient therapeutic treatment of mental disorders—and then provides insight into the Swiss penal policy. It further explores the perspectives of the three groups of actors who most directly organize and shape prisoners’ everyday lives: penal enforcement authorities, prison management and prison staff. Finally, the two main features of life in indefinite confinement, namely indeterminacy (and thus an uncertain future) and an institutionally established ever-same present, are described from the perspective of those directly concerned: the prisoners.

Résumé :
AbstractPain is experienced either due to a physical condition, where it represents associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or due to a psychological situation, implying mental suffering, mental torment. Acute pain lasts for a limited amount of time and is provoked by a specific cause, while chronic pain is a long-term condition that drastically decreases quality of life and may affect patients absent from any biological cause. Chronic pain can affect cognitive functions (e.g., reasoning ability, attention, working memory), mood, sleep quality, sexual functions, and overall mental health. Generally, chronic pain therapy requires a multidisciplinary and complex approach. This chapter proposes a system called iSenseYourPain that continuously assesses chronic pain by leveraging ubiquitous sensor-based behavior assessment techniques. Based on findings from previous research and focusing on qualitative and quantitative assessment of patients’ behavior over time, the iSenseYourPain system is designed to automatically collect data from ubiquitous and everyday smart devices and identify pain-based behavior changes (e.g., changes in sleep duration and social interactions). It facilitates the providing of immediate assistance for pain and discomfort reduction by informing relatives and medical staff of the likelihood of potentially critical health situations. The overall goal of the iSenseYourPain system is to identify pain-related behavior changes in an accurate and timely manner in order to support patients and physicians, allowing the latter to have constant and accurate data on the patient’s condition.

Résumé :
AbstractAdolescence is a time when developmental and contextual transitions converge, increasing the risk for adverse outcomes across the life course. It is during this period that self-concept declines, mental health problems increase and when young people make educational and occupational plans for their future. Considerable research has shown that parent engagement in their child’s learning has positive effects on academic and wellbeing outcomes and may be a protective factor in adolescence. However, it is during adolescence that parent engagement typically declines. Most studies focus on early childhood or use cross-sectional designs that do not account for the high variability in both the child’s development and the parent-child relationship over time. In this chapter, we examine the association between parent engagement and students’ outcomes—self-concept, mental health, and educational aspirations—drawing on national data from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children, while accounting for the school context—school belonging, peer connection problems, and bullying—and parenting styles using panel fixed effects models. We then explore perceptions of parental engagement and educational aspirations among a sample of adolescent students from highly disadvantaged backgrounds using interviews from the Learning through COVID-19 study. Findings show that parent engagement is important for students’ outcomes such as self-concept, mental health and aspirations in early and middle adolescence, even when accounting for family and school context factors. Further, parent engagement in late adolescence, with students from highly disadvantaged backgrounds, continues to be important for positive student outcomes.

Résumé :
AbstractThe presence of childhood and adolescent mental illness has risen significantly in recent years. The challenges that modern society poses necessitate providing children with the cognitive, social, and emotional competencies that help them avoid future mental illness as well as flourish socially and professionally. Positive psychology has introduced models of mental health in childhood to incorporate both the ‘treatment/prevention approach’ (i.e., treating and preventing mental disorders; removing negative states) as well as the ‘promotion approach’ (promoting life satisfaction; increasing positive states). In that sense, wellbeing can be defined as feeling good, functioning well, and doing good for others. Flourishing implies feeling satisfied with life and having the ability to live to the fullest. School and family contexts are important in the promotion of wellbeing in childhood. Nowadays, there is evidence that points to the positive association between levels of wellbeing and students’ academic performance, social abilities, and physical and psychological health. Many of the lifelong habits, beliefs, behaviours, and attitudes that a person carries are established in the family context. In this chapter, advances in the incorporation of positive psychology in these developmental environments are reviewed. Special attention is paid to the efficacy of interventions in preventing future psychological problems as well as in promoting childhood wellbeing, and the importance of political commitment to the achievement of generalized and sustainable changes over time is analysed.

AbstractThis chapter uses three key points in my life to explore the impact of values and cultures on clinical and real-world outcomes. The episodes describe three events that took place over a period of about 20 years. The episodes reflect the then-prevailing values and cultures in psychiatry, broader society and my own experience of living with both a psychiatric diagnosis and the experience of hearing and seeing things. The chapter aims to encourage an understanding of the difference between diagnosis and lived experience and that both can have an impact and explores how both these are directly affected by the cultures and values of everyone involved.

In this article, Rune K. L. Nielsen critically examines the World Health Organization's decision to include "Gaming Disorder" as a "disorder due to addictive behavior" in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). Whether gaming should be recognized as an addictive behavior is hotly debated in the research community. Nielsen argues that the current debate is not likely to subside any time soon as both sides surprisingly agree that we don't know e.g., what Gaming Disorder is, what it looks like, how dangerous or problematic it is, or whether it is best understood as a disorder or as a symptom.

Résumé :
Society has been very quick to adopt and master computer, as well as latest mobile technologies as an integral part of its everyday life. Innovative technologies have penetrated into nearly every aspect of human life and are now so much involved and embedded in social life that most people do not even realize that these technologies are relatively new inventions. Furthermore, nowadays people do not imagine their daily life without technology. In fact, information technologies create great comforts for humans in their everyday life. Despite that, one cannot say for sure that technology has only positive impact on physical, mental or psychological state of humans. Now we are living in the era of digital technologies, where scientists put forward a hypothesis according to which such deep penetration of technologies into human life might have dangerous consequences. If we look around for a moment we will notice that it is almost impossible to imagine social life and life as a whole without state-of-the-art technologies and application thereof. The given research has as its objective to study and display health related aspects, the influence (whether positive or negative) of innovative technologies on human health and to compare the results with those of the past when human life was not exposed to technological influence, as well as reveal the impact of technology, in general, on human health. There are diferent type of technologies and we cannot cover all impacts of all technologies in all activities. I.e., as a result of comparison between the differences of the current and recently used education methods it becomes obvious that technological development has brought to the constant increase of the time spent in a sitting position which causes some heath issues in the future. Due to the modern technologies it becomes possible to get an on-line education this way minimizing the human movement.

Résumé :
Specific learning disability is a psychological and mental disorder that prevents students from learning like normal students, especially in the primary school period. While other people often see this condition of students as a mental problem, it is treatable. They generally do not have any problems with their intelligence, and it is possible to educate them so as to be normal individuals because they are normal indeed. The application of the curriculum suitable for these students is very important to overcome the problem. Although they may exhibit some behaviours that are not compatible with their age because of slow improvement of emotional quotient, they may change into normal individuals in time. It is very common for the teachers to behave these students as if they are mentally retarded. In fact, the case is quite different. In this study, we applied a questionnaire to detect how aware the teachers are of their situation and how they approach these students. The aim of the study is to show that many teachers have the false idea that these students as if they were mentally retarded and there is nothing to do for them. A Likert-scale questionnaire was applied, and the teachers’ opinions were taken through it. The questions are about how aware the teachers are of these students and if they think these students are mentally retarded. In total, 789 teachers participated in the questionnaire, and 69% of them think that these students have mental problems.

Résumé :
The work initially presents a conceptual approach on Mental Fog, Menopause, Cognition and Work and makes a correlation between their necessary interactions. From this point of view, it is demonstrated the little emphasis that has been given to the subject when addressing the health of working women in menopause in the field of Ergonomics. Many women report forgetfulness events at this time of life that hinder their quality of life and their work performance. Sometimes this forgetfulness has been associated with neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and in times of a pandemic the mental fog has been reported as a residual effect of Covid-19, but few doctors consider the association of these events with the so-called "mental fog" typical of the drop in estrogen in the female body during menopause. The research, of exploratory nature, sought to analyze through a bibliometric study in renowned databases, approaches or lack of them in scientific articles that consider mental fog as an important factor to be addressed in the scope of Ergonomics. Seven articles from a total of 38 retrieved documents were analyzed. The results point to a significant gap in the proposed theme.

In Pakistan, obtaining mental health services is a prevailing societal barrier. Lack of education and awareness towards mental health has caused long-term damage. The present study has sought to explore the perceived barriers to accessing mental health services and to identify the contributing factors towards mental health issues in Karachi, Pakistan. This study employed exploratory approach. Our study conducted 20 semi-structured interviews in the developing country context (Pakistan). The major identified barriers were unaffordability and societal taboo, lack of awareness towards mental distress issues and inaccessibility of professionals (psychologists and psychiatrists). Principal reasons for depression among individuals were suppression of feelings and the need for privacy in life. Authors have explored changing trends in current times where individuals now bear an optimistic attitude towards seeking help and with lots of awareness campaigns underway to educate the masses. The authors primarily recommended the reduction of barriers to mental distress by making it affordable and easily accessible.

There is no doubt that a natural phenomenon of the magnitude of a pandemic requires a series of tough precautionary measures in order to limit the spread of the disease, to combat the manifestations of the disease by appropriate therapeutic means and to increase the resistance of the population through prophylactic immunisation, namely vaccination. At the same time, caution points out that not all precautionary measures achieve their aim, for at least two reasons: first, it is an extremely versatile micro-organism (like any virus) which can change its genetic configuration through mutations, thus retaining its main characteristics; contagiousness and pathogenicity; second, the preventive measures initially used: quarantine, mask and physical distancing, have proved to be totally outdated and ineffective in today's conditions (economic interdependence, population movement, overpopulation of the planet). The very vaccination on which so much hope was pinned has failed to stem the new pandemic waves (3 and 4), even in countries where the vaccine immunisation rate has exceeded 70%. The three major means of prevention are reviewed which, beyond the immense frustration they have produced in the population, have had a devastating socio-economic impact, and the results of forcible imposition have produced insignificant results. It has been demonstrated once again that the global approach to the pandemic is doomed to failure (witness the successive waves) and that precautionary measures are illusory. Thus, between precaution and prudence, prudence must prevail in order not to replace an existing evil with a greater evil. The only effective measures remain outbreak control with specific means (which epidemiologists know very well) and immunisation by vaccine.

Résumé :
Review question / Objective: The aim of this scoping review was to examine what is known about the relationship between the resilience and mental health of undergraduate students enrolled in university or college programs globally. Background: For many undergraduate students, higher education acts as a personal investment in preparation for the workforce, while ultimately allowing students to develop cultural capital (Kromydas, 2017). The transition to university or college is also accompanied by important life changes such as moving to a new campus, meeting new people, and increasing self-efficacy to maintain independent responsibilities (i.e., meeting deadlines, completing household chores, and managing expenses; Henri et al., 2018). As a result, navigating these life changes can contribute to feelings of isolation, as many undergraduate students are disconnected from their friends and families (Diehl et al., 2018). Saleh and colleagues (2017) found that young adults in university or college experience higher levels of stress compared to their non-student counterparts. These stressors are attributed to a more challenging workload compared to that of high school, living with new roommates, and financial concerns (Karyotaki et al., 2020). In the face of these stressors, many undergraduate students are likely to experience mental health challenges either for the first time or in an exacerbated manner, potentially depleting their resilience (Abiola, 2017).

Résumé :
"When individual contributors or professionals are promoted into their first formal leadership position, many do not realize how tough that transition can be for them. We often hear that these leaders are not prepared, and lack the support and development to help make that transition successfully. When they are not supported, they suffer, and so too do their teams, the organization, and the HR leadership pipeline, which ultimately can negatively impact the organization’s bottom line. First-time managers are an important part of an organization’s talent and succession management. In turn, organizations may attempt to help first-time managers make the transition into leadership easier by implementing a formal mentoring program. This white paper supports this effort by: • Explaining the benefits a mentoring program can provide for first-time managers and their mentor. • Providing organizations a way to strengthen their own mentoring programs. • Offering HR leaders specific steps to follow and best practices applied in starting and maintaining a successful formal mentoring program specifically aimed at first-time managers. Formal mentoring programs are useful to support and develop first-time managers, an important leadership population that is vital for strengthening your leadership pipeline and succession management efforts. Armed with the knowledge from this white paper, we believe you will be able to gain a competitive advantage".

Résumé :
During the lockdown imposed due to the first wave of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, there were several media reports of citizens flouting the lockdown rules in the United States. Upon closer investigation it was found that the rules were flouted mostly so that people could spend time outdoors in natural environments. This exemplifies the role of the natural environment as a panacea to the mental stress created by pandemics. River ecosystems are perhaps the greatest natural feature of any city. Efficient management of urban rivers, therefore, is strongly correlated to crisis management during pandemics like COVID-19.

Résumé :
Background. Untreated maternal mental health disorders can have devastating sequelae for the mother and child. For women who are currently or planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding, a critical question is whether the benefits of treating psychiatric illness with pharmacologic interventions outweigh the harms for mother and child. Methods. We conducted a systematic review to assess the benefits and harms of pharmacologic interventions compared with placebo, no treatment, or other pharmacologic interventions for pregnant and postpartum women with mental health disorders. We searched four databases and other sources for evidence available from inception through June 5, 2020 and surveilled the literature through March 2, 2021; dually screened the results; and analyzed eligible studies. We included studies of pregnant, postpartum, or reproductive-age women with a new or preexisting diagnosis of a mental health disorder treated with pharmacotherapy; we excluded psychotherapy. Eligible comparators included women with the disorder but no pharmacotherapy or women who discontinued the pharmacotherapy before pregnancy. Results. A total of 164 studies (168 articles) met eligibility criteria. Brexanolone for depression onset in the third trimester or in the postpartum period probably improves depressive symptoms at 30 days (least square mean difference in the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, -2.6; p=0.02; N=209) when compared with placebo. Sertraline for postpartum depression may improve response (calculated relative risk [RR], 2.24; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.95 to 5.24; N=36), remission (calculated RR, 2.51; 95% CI, 0.94 to 6.70; N=36), and depressive symptoms (p-values ranging from 0.01 to 0.05) when compared with placebo. Discontinuing use of mood stabilizers during pregnancy may increase recurrence (adjusted hazard ratio [AHR], 2.2; 95% CI, 1.2 to 4.2; N=89) and reduce time to recurrence of mood disorders (2 vs. 28 weeks, AHR, 12.1; 95% CI, 1.6 to 91; N=26) for bipolar disorder when compared with continued use. Brexanolone for depression onset in the third trimester or in the postpartum period may increase the risk of sedation or somnolence, leading to dose interruption or reduction when compared with placebo (5% vs. 0%). More than 95 percent of studies reporting on harms were observational in design and unable to fully account for confounding. These studies suggested some associations between benzodiazepine exposure before conception and ectopic pregnancy; between specific antidepressants during pregnancy and adverse maternal outcomes such as postpartum hemorrhage, preeclampsia, and spontaneous abortion, and child outcomes such as respiratory issues, low Apgar scores, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn, depression in children, and autism spectrum disorder; between quetiapine or olanzapine and gestational diabetes; and between benzodiazepine and neonatal intensive care admissions. Causality cannot be inferred from these studies. We found insufficient evidence on benefits and harms from comparative effectiveness studies, with one exception: one study suggested a higher risk of overall congenital anomalies (adjusted RR [ARR], 1.85; 95% CI, 1.23 to 2.78; N=2,608) and cardiac anomalies (ARR, 2.25; 95% CI, 1.17 to 4.34; N=2,608) for lithium compared with lamotrigine during first- trimester exposure. Conclusions. Few studies have been conducted in pregnant and postpartum women on the benefits of pharmacotherapy; many studies report on harms but are of low quality. The limited evidence available is consistent with some benefit, and some studies suggested increased adverse events. However, because these studies could not rule out underlying disease severity as the cause of the association, the causal link between the exposure and adverse events is unclear. Patients and clinicians need to make an informed, collaborative decision on treatment choices.

Résumé :
Distance education has become the mandatory component of higher education establishments all over the world including Ukraine regarding COVID-19 lockdown and intentions of Universities to render valuable knowledge and provide safe educational experience for students. The present study aimed to explore the student’s and academic staff’s attitude towards e-learning and the most complicated challenges regarding online learning and distance education. Our findings disclosed that the online learning using Zoom, Moodle, Google Meet, BigBlueButton and Cisco has become quite popular among the students and academic staff in Ukraine in time of the lockdown period and beyond. Based on the Principal Component Analysis data processing we can conclude that students’ satisfaction and positive e-learning perception are in a good correlation with quality of e-learning resources and set of apps which are used while e-learning and distance education. Also, education style, methods, and manner predict willingness of students to self-study. The self-motivation, time-management, lack of practice, digital alienation, positive attitude towards ICT, and instruction strategy belong to the most important challenges of COVID-19 lockdown based on the students and academic staff interviews. Online learning on daily purpose should be used in the favor of strengthening of classical higher education rather than replacing the former. Blended education is the best alternative to face-to-face education, because the communication with mentor in a live environmental even virtual should have ushered the learners to complete online learning and improve its results.

Résumé :
Everyone wants to be happy. Over the ages, tracts of the ancient moral philosophers – Plato, Aristotle, Confucius – have probed the question of happiness. The stirring words in the preamble to the Declaration of Independence that established ‘Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness’ as ‘unalienable Rights’ served as the inspiration that launched a nation, the United States of America. Yet, more than 240 years later, the relationship between government’s objectives and human happiness is not straightforward, even over the matters of whether it can and should be a government aim. We approach this question not as philosophers, but as social scientists seeking to understand happiness through data. Our work in these pages is intended to enhance understanding of how the well-being of individuals and societies is affected by myriad forces, among them: income, inflation, governance, genes, inflation, inequality, bereavement, biology, aspirations, unemployment, recession, economic growth, life expectancies, infant mortality, war and conflict, family and social networks, and mental and physical health and health care. Our report suggests the ways in which this information might be brought to bear to rethink traditional aims and definitions of socioeconomic progress, and to create a better – and, yes, happier – world. We explain what the data say to us: our times demand new approaches. Foreword by Richard Easterlin; Introduced by Diane Coyle.
