Résumé :
In many cities and regions, decision makers independently develop Train Operation Plan (TOP) for each line in the rail transit network, resulting in a lack of TOP Synchronization (TOPS). Considering the entire network as a whole, researchers have realized that synchronous optimization is of great significance. In this paper, we formulate two Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) models to optimize demand-driven TOP in the network. The former is an Asynchronous TOP Optimization (ATOPO) model, while the latter is a Synchronous TOP Optimization (STOPO) model. The bi-objective models simultaneously determine train frequency, train timetable, and rolling stock circulation under small-granularity passenger demand to minimize trains’ total cost and passengers’ total time. Then, we propose the Nondominated Sorting Coevolutionary Memetic Algorithm (NSCMA) to solve the combinatorial optimization problems. The hybrid heuristic algorithm incorporates Coevolutionary Memetic Algorithm (CMA) into Advanced and Adaptive Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (AANSGA-II) to ameliorate the evolution process for elite individuals. On this basis, we study the case of Shenyang Metro to verify the models and the algorithm. The results demonstrate that the STOPO model is better than the ATOPO model in reducing trains’ total cost and passengers’ total time. In addition, NSCMA is better than AANSGA-II in obtaining elite individuals.

Résumé :
In this article, an improved variant of the cuckoo search (CS) algorithm named Coevolutionary Host-Parasite (CHP) is used for maximizing the metal removal rate in a turning process. The spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut are considered as the independent parameters that describe the metal removal rate during the turning operation. A data-driven second-order polynomial regression approach is used for this purpose. The training dataset is designed using an L16 orthogonal array. The CHP algorithm is effective in quickly locating the global optima. Furthermore, CHP is seen to be sufficiently robust in the sense that it is able to identify the optima on independent reruns. The CHP predicted optimal solution presents ±10% deviations in the optimal process parameters, which shows the robustness of the optimal solution.

Résumé :
In September 2015, the photographs of a dead boy, Alan Kurdi, washed up on a beach near the Turkish city of Bodrum, inspired countless reactions of indignation and protest. To understand the protest dynamic that emerged around these photographs, this article discusses three sets of explanatory observations: (a) that the Kurdi photographs had important aesthetic and inter-iconic qualities, (b) that the central ‘Kurdi on the beach’ photographs were juxtaposed with a range of ‘Kurdi alive’ photographs brought into the public sphere by intimate injustice interpreters and commentators (i.e. Kurdi’s aunt and father), and (c) that they displayed an interpretive openness that allowed for ideological and geographical diversity in political meaning work. In seeking to offer an explanation of the dramatic diffusion of Kurdi, the article also illuminates some new powerful trends in activism around injustice photographs. While the global and protest-driven diffusion of injustice photographs is not historically novel, the new media ecology of Web 2.0 is profoundly transforming the way photographs are politicized. This transformation involves unprecedented opportunities for individualized, creative, and memetic protest.

Résumé :
In this study, the dynamic joint scheduling problem for processing machines and transportation robots in a flexible job shop is investigated. The study aims to minimize the order completion time (makespan) of a job shop manufacturing system. Considering breakdowns, order insertion and battery charging maintenance of robots, an event-driven global rescheduling strategy is adopted. A novel memetic algorithm combining genetic algorithm and variable neighborhood search is designed to handle dynamic events and obtain a new scheduling plan. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted to test the effect of the improved operators. For successive multiple rescheduling, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by comparing it with three other algorithms under dynamic events, and through statistical analysis, the results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Résumé :
This study proposes a theoretical framework for understanding how and why certain memes prevail as a form of political discourse online. Since memes are constantly changing as they spread, drawing inferences from a population of memes as concrete digital artifacts is a pressing challenge for researchers. This article argues that meme selection and mutation are driven by a cooperative combination of three types of communication logic: wasteful play online, social media political expression, and cultural evolution. To illustrate this concept, we map Shepard Fairey’s Obama Hope Poster as it spreads online. Employing structural rhetorical analysis, the study categorizes Internet memes on branching diagrams as they evolve. We argue that mapping these variations is a useful tool for organizing memes as an expression of the values and preferences embedded in online communities. The study adds to the growing literature around the subversive nature of memetic diffusion in popular and political culture.

Résumé :
The heterodimeric ATP-binding cassette (ABC) sterol transporter, ABCG5/G8, is responsible for the biliary and transintestinal secretion of cholesterol and dietary plant sterols. Missense mutations of ABCG5/G8 can cause sitosterolemia, a loss-of-function disorder characterized by plant sterol accumulation and premature atherosclerosis. A new molecular framework was recently established by a crystal structure of human ABCG5/G8 and reveals a network of polar and charged amino acids in the core of the transmembrane domains, namely, a polar relay. In this study, we utilize genetic variants to dissect the mechanistic role of this transmembrane polar relay in controlling ABCG5/G8 function. We demonstrated a sterol-coupled ATPase activity of ABCG5/G8 by cholesteryl hemisuccinate (CHS), a relatively water-soluble cholesterol memetic, and characterized CHS-coupled ATPase activity of three loss-of-function missense variants, R543S, E146Q, and A540F, which are respectively within, in contact with, and distant from the polar relay. The results established an in vitro phenotype of the loss-of-function and missense mutations of ABCG5/G8, showing significantly impaired ATPase activity and loss of energy sufficient to weaken the signal transmission from the transmembrane domains. Our data provide a biochemical evidence underlying the importance of the polar relay and its network in regulating the catalytic activity of ABCG5/G8 sterol transporter.

Résumé :
Some initial values of the wheel force transducer (WFT) change after being mounted in the vehicle. The traditional static calibration is inadequate to fully obtain these initial values. Aiming to this problem, an online initial value calibration method is proposed. The method does not require any additional calibration equipment or manual operation and just requires the vehicle mounted with the WFT to be driven on a flat road with constant speed. In this way, an initial value mode is constructed and then converted to an optimization problem. To solve this problem and acquire the right initial value, an improved Memetic framework based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) and Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) is adopted. To verify the effect of the proposed method, the real WFT data is used and the comparative test is carried out. The experiment result shows that the proposed method is superior to the traditional one and can improve the measurement accuracy effectively.

Résumé :
Modern methods for network analytics provide an opportunity to revisit preconceived notions in the classification of diseases as “clusters of symptoms”. Curated collections which were subsequently modified, like the Diagnostic and Statistical Manuals of Mental Disorders “DSM-IV” and the most recent addition, DSM-5 allow us to introspect, using the solution provided by modern algorithms, if there exists a consensus between the clusters obtained via a data-driven approach, with the current classifications. In the case of mental disorders, the availability of a follow-up consensus collection (e.g. in this case the DSM-5), potentially allows investigating if the classification of disorders has moved closer (or away) to what a data-driven analytic approach would have unveiled by objectively inferring it from the data of DSM-IV. In this contribution, we present a new type of mathematical approach based on a global cohesion score which we introduce for the first time for the identification of communities of symptoms. Different from other approaches, this combinatorial optimization method is based on the identification of “triangles” in the network; these triads are the building block of feedback loops that can exist between groups of symptoms. We used a memetic algorithm to obtain a collection of highly connected-cohesive sets of symptoms and we compare the resulting community structure with the classification of disorders present in the DSM-IV.

Résumé :
It is devoted to the problem of analyzing memes as a tool of information warfare. The article analyzes the history and origin of the study of memes as a phenomenon of information interaction and social technology. Memes can be interpreted as: image, idea, symbol, action, any cultural information copied by one person from another; the collective unconscious at the moment of acquiring verbal and visual form; specially created information message, which is distributed in the information space and is intended to form the necessary picture of the human world and make appropriate decisions. The meme influences the perception of reality and drives action. Different types, types of memes and their characteristics are considered. There is a diversity of spread of this phenomenon: global Internet memes, understandable to a wide range of people, and local memes that require specific awareness (gaming, hacking, scientific, professional). Emphasis is placed on the use of memes in contemporary armed conflicts. The information war, combined with the peculiarities of the modern information society, led to the use of new technologies to influence the mass consciousness, in particular, memetic weapons. The article analyzes memetic weapons as a technology of using memes for the distribution of beneficial information in the information space of the object of information confrontation. Particular attention was paid to the analysis of the perceptions of memes by ATO participants and volunteers. The urgency of the problem is determined by the need to analyze the impact of ideas reflected in Internet memes on the mass consciousness during the Russo-Ukrainian war. Within the framework of the Polish-Ukrainian project "Crisis Intervention – Support for NGOs in Ukraine Working with ATO Soldiers and Their Families", 20 flexible interviews were conducted. The focus of the study may be to analyze the perception and functioning of political Internet memes on social media. Empirical studies of the influence of Internet memes on the structural components of the psyche of Internet users are also promising. The war in eastern Ukraine reaffirmed the paradigm shift of modern warfare, demonstrated the thoroughness of a thorough study of the phenomenon and the need to develop entirely new approaches to the realization of political and military goals.

Résumé :
This study attempts to explore the dynamic scheduling problem from the perspective of operational research optimization. The goal is to propose a rescheduling framework for solving distributed manufacturing systems that consider random machine breakdowns as the production disruption. We establish a mathematical model that can better describe the scheduling of the distributed blocking flowshop. To realize the dynamic scheduling, we adopt an “event-driven” policy and propose a two-stage “predictive-reactive” method consisting of two steps: initial solution pre-generation and rescheduling. In the first stage, a global initial schedule is generated and considers only the deterministic problem, i.e., optimizing the maximum completion time of static distributed blocking flowshop scheduling problems. In the second stage, that is, after the breakdown occurs, the rescheduling mechanism is triggered to seek a new schedule so that both maximum completion time and the stability measure of the system can be optimized. At the breakdown node, the operations of each job are classified and a hybrid rescheduling strategy consisting of “right-shift repair + local reorder” is performed. For local reorder, we designed a discrete memetic algorithm, which embeds the differential evolution concept in its search framework. To test the effectiveness of DMA, comparisons with mainstream algorithms are conducted on instances with different scales. The statistical results show that the ARPDs obtained from DMA are improved by 88%.

Résumé :
Digitally mediated images depicting death and martyrdom as a trope of resistance and contestation against oppressive regimes emerged as recurring and critical instruments of dissent during the Arab uprisings of 2010‐11. While the trope of death and martyrdom as a form of political expression and resistance is not a new phenomenon in the Middle East, the affordances of digital and social media technologies have brought forth new opportunities for activists and everyday citizens to construct, circulate and communicate martyr narratives. Drawing from literature in visual politics, digital activist culture, and media and communication, this textual and iconographical analysis of visual tropes focuses on the brutal killing of Egyptian youth Khaled Said, on his construction as a posthumous injustice symbol, and on his subsequent transformation as a martyr of the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. Activists and everyday citizens participated in symbolically resurrecting Said in and through digitally mediated images and transforming him into a martyr to represent the popular struggle for social justice and universal human rights. The article examines how Said is made a martyr through complex creative processes of recurrent visual appropriation, mediation, re-appropriation and remediation. It shows that the creative authorship of martyrdom is increasingly hybridized, decentralized and driven by a memetic protest dynamic. The article proposes the term ‘digitally mediated martyrdom’ to designate the emergence of a new kind of visually oriented, socially constructed and ritualized protest dynamic. It develops the conceptual framework for understanding digitally mediated martyrdom as a contemporary political practice within activist cultures and popular social justice movements. It also argues digitally mediated martyrdom represents the emergence of a new and transnational protest dynamic.

Résumé :
Since 2016, a culture of participatory leftism has emerged on Facebook that has yet to be substantially documented. Scholars have established ideographic criticism of memes as a critical/cultural tool for analysis. However, there is little to no work on broader, systems-based analyses of alternative social media platforms, and the role they play in the creation and maintenance of political identities. These socially mediated communities, alternatively known as Leftbook (or Left Facebook), advertise themselves as places to learn about Marx, socialism and philosophies centred on labour, revolution and worker freedom. Research from traditional online group pages suggests there is a distinct split between neutral observers and harsh critics of Leftbook. These online spaces often result in odd, hilarious and peculiar behaviours that the untrained eye is quick to dismiss as meaningless Internet drivel. However, humour and satire have long been used tactfully by counterculture organizations/movements to communicate the absurdity of the status quo. For instance, Waisanen argued that unlikely sources of comedic rhetorical criticism creatively influence and critically reframe political discourse; guiding audiences towards new possibilities of insight and democratic civil discourse. Using Johnson’s explanations of memetics as a guiding theory, I discuss Burke’s various works on human paradox, identification, Dramatism and the comic frame to provide insight on notions of: identity performance, ‘slacktivism’ and burgeoning political resonance within this digital environment. I code preliminary themes of the post content of one Leftbook page, ‘Sassy Socialist Memes’, over the course of a month. My guiding research questions are ‘[a]s platforms such as Leftbook become environmental, how do they contribute to a mode of socio-political identity construction for members of the Left?’ and ‘[a]s extensions of political identity, how does the ‘Sassy Social Memes’ page impact experiences of political organizing and engagement?’.

Résumé :
It was late February 2020 when part of Northern Italy entered the first Covid-19 lockdown of the West. While stories of people fleeing quarantined areas soon made national headlines, the international news was suddenly reporting of coronavirus patients connected to Italy all around the world. Against this background, Italian social media started thriving with Covid-19 humour. On 9 March the lockdown turned nationwide and became one of the strictest in Europe. By focusing on Covid-19 memes of quarantined Italy, this article explores the local - and mundane - appropriation of memetic practices, in both its cultural and political dimensions. We combined digital methods and netnographic techniques to generate and analyse a dataset of Covid-19 Twitter memes produced by Italian publics during the first national lockdown. This allowed us to follow the circulation - and evolution - of memetic practices, explore how cultural fabric contributed to different dimensions of meme production and categorise the emergence of political expression. Our findings show that Italian pandemic memes had a primarily affective function fed by past and present pop culture, local or sub-local stereotypes and popular public debates. Where political expression did emerge, it was never particularly innovative or new because it was there to mark previously established communal belonging driven by populist narratives more than to initiate contentious practices. Ultimately, this work suggests that memetic practices can highly intertwine with the geographically or linguistically local and point to the need for contextual approaches able to enhance our understanding of digital practices as shaped by local publics.

Résumé :
The split delivery vehicle routing problem is a variant of the well-known vehicle routing problem, where each customer can be visited by several vehicles. The problem has many practical applications, but it is computationally challenging. This paper presents an effective memetic algorithm for solving the problem with a fleet of limited or unlimited vehicles. The algorithm features a general edge assembly crossover to generate promising offspring solutions from the perspective of assembling suitable edges and an effective local search to improve each offspring solution. The algorithm is further reinforced by a feasibility-restoring procedure, a diversification-oriented mutation, and a quality-and-distance pool updating technique. Extensive experiments on 324 benchmark instances indicate that our algorithm is able to update 143 best upper bounds in the literature and match the best results for 156 other instances. Additional experiments are presented to obtain insight into the roles of the key search ingredients of the algorithm. The method was ranked second in the SDVRP track at the 12th DIMACS Implementation Challenge on Vehicle Routing Problems.

AbstractThis research work introduces a new intelligent framework for infectious disease detection by exploring various emerging and intelligent paradigms. We propose new deep learning architectures such as entity embedding networks, long-short term memory, and convolution neural networks, for accurately learning heterogeneous medical data in identifying disease infection. The multi-agent system is also consolidated for increasing the autonomy behaviours of the proposed framework, where each agent can easily share the derived learning outputs with the other agents in the system. Furthermore, evolutionary computation algorithms, such as memetic algorithms, and bee swarm optimization controlled the exploration of the hyper-optimization parameter space of the proposed framework. Intensive experimentation has been established on medical data. Strong results obtained confirm the superiority of our framework against the solutions that are state of the art, in both detection rate, and runtime performance, where the detection rate reaches 98% for handling real use cases.

Résumé :
AbstractThe paper helps to understand the essence of stochastic population-based searches that solve ill-conditioned global optimization problems. This condition manifests itself by presence of lowlands, i.e., connected subsets of minimizers of positive measure, and inability to regularize the problem. We show a convenient way to analyze such search strategies as dynamic systems that transform the sampling measure. We can draw informative conclusions for a class of strategies with a focusing heuristic. For this class we can evaluate the amount of information about the problem that can be gathered and suggest ways to verify stopping conditions. Next, we show the Hierarchic Memetic Strategy coupled with Multi-Winner Evolutionary Algorithm (HMS/MWEA) that follow the ideas from the first part of the paper. We introduce a complex, ergodic Markov chain of their dynamics and prove an asymptotic guarantee of success. Finally, we present numerical solutions to ill-conditioned problems: two benchmarks and a real-life engineering one, which show the strategy in action. The paper recalls and synthesizes some results already published by authors, drawing new qualitative conclusions. The totally new parts are Markov chain models of the HMS structure of demes and of the MWEA component, as well as the theorem of their ergodicity.

Résumé :
This work addresses a soft-clustered vehicle routing problem that extends the classical capacitated vehicle routing problem with one additional constraint, that is, customers are partitioned into clusters and all customers of the same cluster must be served by the same vehicle. Its potential applications include parcel delivery in courier companies and freight transportation. Due to its NP-hard nature, solving it is computationally challenging. This paper presents an efficient bilevel memetic search method to do so, which explores search space at both cluster and customer levels. It integrates three distinct modules: a group matching-based crossover (to generate promising offspring solutions), a bilevel hybrid neighborhood search (to perform local optimization), and a tabu-driven population reconstruction strategy (to help the search escape from local optima). Extensive experiments on three sets of 390 widely used public benchmark instances are conducted. The results convincingly demonstrate that the proposed method achieves much better overall performance than state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of both solution quality and computation time. In particular, it is able to find 20 new upper bounds for large-scale instances while matching the best-known upper bounds for all but four of the remaining instances. Ablation studies on three key algorithm modules are also performed to demonstrate the novelty and effectiveness of the proposed ideas and strategies. Résumé :
With the advent of the information age, people have higher requirements for basic algorithms. Meta-heuristic algorithms have received wide attention as a high-level strategy to study and generate fully optimized solutions to data-driven optimization problems. Using the advantage of equilibrium optimizer (EO) with better balance mode, combined with the strategy of memetic algorithm, different proportion of temperature is introduced in different stages. That is, EO and thermal exchange optimization (TEO) are fused to obtain a new highly balanced optimizer (HEO). While keeping the guiding strategy and memory mode unchanged of EO, the accuracy of optimization is greatly improved. 14 well-known benchmark functions and 7 selective algorithms were used for HEO evaluation comparison experiments. On the basis of the fitness function curve, the optimal solution and other experimental data are tested statistically. The experimental results show that the improved algorithm has high accuracy and stability, but at the cost of running a little more time. Application testing of complex engineering problems is also one of the main purposes of algorithm design. In this paper, three typical engineering design problems (three truss, welded beam and rolling bearing design) are tested and the experimental results show that this algorithm has certain competitiveness and superiority in classical engineering design.
