Résumé :
Scripture’s remark to Will in Piers Plowman.B, “I nel noght scorne . . . but if scryveynes lye” (B.X.331), acknowledges the possibility o f scribal inaccuracy, capturing both the reality o f mediaeval manuscript traditions and the frustration o f editors who wrestle to distinguish authorial from scribal readings of a text. From the point o f view o f author or editor, scribal “corruptions” interfere with the important processes of creation and dissemination of a literary work— in the case of Piers Plowman.B, surviving manuscripts not only have scribal corruptions, but are themselves copies o f an unusually corrupt copy (Kane-Donaldson 96-97, 128-29). As readers, we instinctively side with the editors and poets, but over the gulfs of time in the wake of centuries o f the writer’s absence, we perhaps should pause, as B.A. Windeatt suggests, to reconsider the “scryveynes lye” and to understand it also as a mediaeval response to a mediaeval text (1979, 122). Although at opposite poles in their own responses to scribal contributions, both Kane and Windeatt narrow “scribal response” to signify textual variation— the glossing and rewriting of the text, but manuscript layout (ordinatio and compilatio, for example) also fashions and interprets the text. In Oxford MS Corpus Christi College 201, manuscript arrangement and “corruption” together manipulate the text aggressively in ways that frequently demonstrate intelligent scribal reception of a complicated text; the “scryveynes lye” becomes here a contemporary response, a mediaeval guide to our own potential reading of Piers Plowman.

Résumé :
Abstract The twelfth volume of Catalogus Translationum et Commentariorum (CTC) marks a departure from earlier books in this series by focusing on the reception history of a single text: the Metamorphoses of Publius Ovidius Naso, otherwise known as Ovid. This book has been decades in the making. It began in the late 1970s, when Virginia Brown, then a member of the editorial board of CTC, commissioned Frank T. Coulson to compose an article on the medieval reception of Ovid’s most famous poem and the late Harry Louis Levy (1906–1981) to contribute information on the early modern commentaries. Coulson later collaborated with Harald Anderson to write the essay on the fortuna of the Metamorphoses and the sections on its commentary tradition and translation history. The result of the industry of these three scholars is well worth the wait. This massive instrument of reference is a monumental contribution to our understanding of the reception of Ovid’s poem in the medieval and early modern periods and the most important addition to Ovidian reception studies in modern scholarship. Exhaustive in its thoroughness and immaculate in its presentation, this book will enlighten and inform scholars and students of the Metamorphoses for decades to come.

Résumé :
Reception theory deals with the reception of literary text itself as well as its effect on a potential reader. On one hand, the reception aesthetics examines how readers in different historical situations react to a literary text, and thus deals with real readers whose reactions point to a certain historically conditioned literary experience. On the other hand, Wolfgang Iser's Theory of the Aesthetic Response observes the impact of a literary text on its implied reader and how it provokes a reaction. The aim of this study is to emphasize (in some moments) the variously used and applied theoretical and philosophical starting points in Wolfgang Iser's reception aesthetics and the reception theory of Hans-Robert Jauß.

Students of political thought generally focus on the context in which the writer produced his or her work or on the present philosophical or political importance of the text. A neglected area is the reception of the work by contemporaries and the subsequent reputation which the writer enjoyed, both in terms of philosophical coherence and political acceptability. This article looks at the changes in Mill's public image and in the philosophical evaluation given him by commentators from his own day to the present.

The reception of Greek scientific and philosophical literature in Syriac, which had a major influence on the later reception in Arabic, is an area that has been the subject of a renewed wave of research in the past few years. This paper provides a brief overview of the reception of the Greek sciences in Syriac, citing some of the latest research in the field. This is followed by the presentation of an example to illustrate how the Syriac intermediary text, when available, can help to elucidate the process of translation into Arabic, together with some observations on the ways in which the Syriac reception of the Greek sciences influenced the later reception in Arabic.

Résumé :
This essay lays out a history of the translation, interpretation, transmission and reception of the Bhagavad Gita as a cultural, religious and philosophical text in the West from 1785 to 1945; in doing so it focuses primarily on Britain, although it also refers to other contexts of reception where they are connected to the British context, or to present revealing or helpful comparisons. The object of the essay is to investigate relationships between the Gita's interpretive history and assumptions about the Gita, both as a transcultural philosophical source and as an essentially Hindu religious text, which have been in place since the twentieth century. Although there have been other transnational surveys and histories of the Gita's translation, this essay differs from them in positing a specific period of interpretation between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, during which time, it argues, the Gita as a received and translated text was significantly altered in certain specific ways which continue to influence its present understanding both in the West and in India.

Résumé :
Notes from the Underground has become a relevant text in Sweden only since the second half of the 20 th century, primarily due to the emergence of translations and criticism, but also in connection with the construction of “the people’s home” (“folkhemmet”), which is what a Swedish person thinks about when reading about Crystal Palace. However, not only social ideas attract Swedish readers in Notes from the Underground; the problems of human isolation, desire, and inability to love another person more than oneself, as well as the worldview of a “paradoxalist” are also relevant to them. The multi-layered text of Notes from the Underground has not remained unnoticed either. The article examines several instances of the Notes from the Underground reception in Swedish literature, namely social and philosophical (Sven Delblank, Lars Ahlin), socio-religious (Birgitta Trotzig), existentialist (Lars Gyllensten), and aesthetic (Lars Ahlin). It is worth mentioning that even when referring to Dostoevsky’s work in social debates, Swedish authors almost never ignore its philosophical context or reduce the universal human issues raised by the novel to the purely social issues projecting them on Swedish reality.

Résumé :
The phenomenological review of V. Izer's reading process in the context of «literary anthropology» is analyzed. The philosopher makes a distinction between interpretation and reception. The first, in his opinion, gives the imagination a «semantic definition», and the second – a sense of aesthetic, object. The first passes within the limits of the «semantic orientations» of the literary theory, and the second – within the limits of the cultural and anthropological context. The article deals with the philosophical analysis of the reception aesthetics. For the supporters of this theoretical direction, there is an inherent shift of attention from the problems of creativity and literary work to the problem of its reception or, in other words, from the level of psychological, sociological or anthropological interpretation of the creative biography, to the level of perceived consciousness. Receptive aesthetics gives the reader privilege in the «text/reader» paradigm and gives him the cognitive and affective ability to create his own text from this text.

Résumé :
The paper aims to rectify the reception of Heidegger’s so-called “hermeneutic violence,” by addressing the under-investigated issue of its actual target and rationale. Since the publication of Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics, some of Heidegger’s contemporary readers, such as Cassirer, as well as more recent commentators, accused Heidegger of doing violence to Kant’s and other philosophers’ texts. I show how the rationale of Heidegger’s self-acknowledged violence becomes tenable in light of his personal notes on his Kant book, and of several hermeneutic tenets from Being and Time. The violence at stake turns out to be a genuine method, involving the appropriation (Zueignen) and the elaboration (Ausarbeiten) of an interpreted text. Its target, I argue, is not the text itself, as it was often assumed, but its reception by a community or tradition. Thus, that violence may well instill interpretive conflict, yet its purpose is to salvage a text from a conventional and ossified reception, namely, from what Heidegger regards as the authoritarianism of idle talk (Gerede) in a philosophical milieu.

Résumé :
Cognitive and methodological reference translation of the theory of reception The most prominent feature of the concept of reception in cognitive reality and literature is that it falls into a kind of conflict between existentialism and its philosophical and logical directions and conceptions. This led to the occurrence of ideological political conflicts in German thought with the Marxist system; which opposed the reception theory. On the other hand, we realized that the theory of reception gives great attention to attributing complete freedom to the individual in order to live his existential and cognitive reality; a fact that made the theory of reception a revolution against this system, which tightened its grip on the reader, making him directed by this compulsion for a long time in Germany. On the basis of these assumptions, the theory of reception built its critical and cognitive principles on the fact that the reality of the text is just an image without dimensions. Perhaps what prompted this kind of study and the cognitive vision adopted by the reception theory in its traetment of the cognitive reality, namely the literary text, its great interest in the merit of reception and the principle of perception itself. These principles, which became later the main pillar in the theory of reception, are perhaps the most important ones: the freedom of the reader, the making of meaning or the concept through participation, and finally the essential purpose of aesthetic pleasure.

Résumé :
Max Weber's 1919 lecture Politik als Beruf is still considered a classical text in the social sciences. The reception of the text in the Anglo-Saxon world has been profoundly shaped by the translation provided by Hans H. Gerth and C. Wright Mills, first appearing in 1946. Their Politics as a Vocation is more than a vivid transposition of Weber's rather peculiar German rhetoric—it is rendered in a way that suggests a certain interpretation and makes others highly improbable. The present article traces the reception of Weber's text back to certain decisions made by the translators after World War II. It argues that the translation emphasized philosophical and ethical parts of the text at the expense of others that were more geared toward a political sociology of modern politics. Moreover, the adoption of Weber's approach in empirical research was hindered if not foreclosed by a distorted presentation of his key typologies and some central concepts.

Résumé :
This essay considers the spread and reception of Dream of the Red Chamber in the West through the theory of aesthetic reception. Though it was originally read with wonder and Orientalist suspicion, its Western reception has progressed through increasing exposure to Chinese culture and literature, gaining an appreciation of its thematic and cultural depth. In its conception, aesthetic reception theory, developed by Hans Robert Jauss, emphasises the openness of reading, even when texts traverse linguistic and cultural borders. The paper covers translation issues confronting Dream of the Red Chamber translators, such as interpreting culturally distinctive symbols, reusing narrative conventions, and conveying Confucian, Daoist and Buddhist philosophical concepts. By investigating choices in translation and their effect on reception, the paper illustrates how cultural translation turns the text around for Western readers, turning Dream of the Red Chamber from an exotic object into a world literature classic. If it takes account of the significance of cultural exchange in translation, this research offers a glimpse of the future of Chinese literatures global influence.

Résumé :
The reception of Kant’s philosophy in Russia at the beginning of the 19th century was focused mainly on religious and ethical issues, although it did not exclude theoretical and cognitive questions. The search for textbooks that would adequately and at the same time comprehensibly introduce students and the educated public to the basic ideas of the Kantian philosophical system led two professors at Kazan University, Alexander S. Loubkin and Petr S. Kondyrev, to the textbook on philosophy for beginners by Friedrich Wilhelm Daniel Snell, the German Kantian philosopher, pedagogue and populariser. The work they did in preparing the Russian edition of that textbook was not confined to translation, although the translation of the philosophical text itself required scrupulous terminological work, since there were as yet no equivalents for many philosophical terms in Russian. Each of the translators provided parts of the textbook with their own explanations and additions, with the parts on moral philosophy and philosophy of religion attracting the most interest and polemical objections. Loubkin’s criticism of Snell and thus in most cases of Kant concerns such key concepts and provisions of Kantian practical philosophy as practical reason, the end of moral acts, the distinction between thing and person, the categorical imperative, the feeling of respect for the moral law and others. The real stumbling block for Loubkin was Kant’s solution to the problem of the relation between religion and morality and his choice of a foundation for morality. Loubkin suggests that the moral is grounded in religion and proposes as the criterion of morality the correspondence of an act to the Divine Will.

Vasile Băncilă left posterity printed texts, but also thousands of sheets written over four decades of life, unfinished and not ready to be printed. In this essay, I analyse selected excerpts from the Polish edition of Nikos Kazantzakis’s Report to El Greco (2012), which was translated not directly from Greek but from an English text. My aim is to show what dangers await the translator when he omits the source text and the implications this has on the target text and, consequently, on the reception of the translated work. I focus mainly on the following issues: the incompleteness of the target text and content deficiencies in relation to the source text; the content inadequacy of the target text, the lack of lexical and phraseological equivalence; the lack of equivalence at the level of cultural references. The analysis reveals significant discrepancies, which are not limited to omissions or far-reaching paraphrases, but touch upon the core of Kazantzakis’ work, his key philosophical concepts, which are almost completely misrepresented in the Polish edition.

Abstract This archival feature serves to present the personality and philosophy of Elena Oznobkina (1959–2010), a key figure of late-Soviet and, later, Russian philosophy. Oznobkina pioneered the present-day reception of Martin Heidegger and Edmund Husserl in Russia, but also made substantial contributions to Nietzsche studies and political philosophy, which are detailed in Nelly Motrozhilova’s introduction. Her philosophical work was inseparable from her personal political engagement, to which the featured archival text (“Prison or Gulag?”, 2000) testifies. Résumé :
The last century witnessed a lot of changes in world literary criticism. The modern critical approaches with their different philosophical, literary and linguistic attitudes emerged giving us various rules and ways of reading a literary text. These theories were divided into contextual approaches (the historical, psychological and social) paying attention to the author and the political, cultural and psychological changes he/she has undergone and how these changes affected the text through the author and his life. Critical studies then shifted from the context into text with the emergence of the textual approaches which argue that the critical reading begins with text and ends with it. The critical act moves then from the text to the receiver/reader with the appearance of the reader response theories which focus upon the reader as one of the most important elements of constructing the literary text and participating in it. Amid the tumult of all these studies, there were those who deny the existence of Arabic critical studies concerned with the reader or receiver till Mohamd Al-Mubark pulished his study: Text Reception in Arabic Criticism, tracing in it classical Arab critics' opinions concerning critical reading, its levels and types, the reader, his types and attitudes. This book is an attempt by the author to highlight the ancient Arabic critical heritage and to show the place of Arab critics and their critical potentialities in reading and receiving the literary text. Keywords: criticism, critical approaches, reader-response theory, ancient Arabic criticism, text reception.

Résumé :
In the article author follows a view that although rational thinking can be found in all literate societies around the globe, differences between cultures develop to a certain degree also from basic distinctions between philosophical ways of thinking. In this sense, the Yijing, or The Book of Changes, classical text not only characterizes the basic mode of Chinese philosophical thinking, but also influences past and present Chinese culture. The Yijing, however, did not only influence Chinese contexts, but from the 18th century on, its impact was felt also in the West. To Jesuit translators, Leibniz and C. G. Jung, and even to 20th century physicists, artists or musicians, this ancient text had always something relevant to say. The more so in times of crisis, when it became evident that it is better to escape one’s own culture and to look for answers elsewhere; in a wholly different tradition. It seems, however, that the reception of the Yijing in the West went full circle; from being an exotic and mystical text from an unknown and foreign practice, to an important corrective of a Western tradition that found itself in crisis during the twentieth century, to the global culture industry.

Résumé :
The relevance of the study is due to the need for an aesthetic analysis of a famous journalistic work of Pyotr Chaadayev, which in the history of philosophy has been studied in detail from the ethical, epistemological, ontological, and theological perspectives, but the aesthetic aspect has been overlooked. The problem of identifying the reception of ancient aesthetic categories in the most famous Russian philosophical letter of the first half of the 19th century is associated with a change of cultural eras and is of interest in terms of preserving the content of the categories of aesthetics that was laid down by Plato and Aristotle. The research methodology includes the text analysis method and the comparison of the content of aesthetic categories of ancient philosophers and Chaadayev. The study revealed that Chaadaev in his letter uses the reception of the Socratic dialogue, adapted for his time, which suggests the author’s commitment to ancient traditions. Chaadaev’s most popular aesthetic categories are the sublime and the base, as well as mimesis (he uses the word “imitation” in his letter). As a result, it turns out that while characterizing Western European culture the philosophical letter’s author correlates it with the category of the sublime, which is close in content to the sublime of the Platonists and Pseudo-Longinus. The opposite category of the base in the Aristotelian interpretation, from Chaadaev’s point of view, best describes Russian history and culture. According to the results of the comparison, the reason for such a bitter picture of domestic existence found by the author seems logical – it lies in the mimesis or imitation, which in Chaadaev’s definition clearly manifests the traces of both Platonic and Aristotelian meanings. As a result, the letter obviously demonstrates the reception of ancient aesthetic categories. However, it can be noted that the entire composition of the work is built on the contrast between the sublime and the base. It was this contrast that created the plot conflict of the letter, which caused a stir among the nineteenth-century readers and leaves no one indifferent to this day.

Résumé :
This article discusses the Wirkungsgeschichte approach in biblical studies, its advantages and disadvantages. Hans Georg Gadamer actualized the idea of Wirkungsgeschichte in philosophical hermeneutics and made it the basis of all understanding. His student Hans Robert Jauss, based on Gadamer’s ideas, developed the method of Wirkungsgeschichte in literary studies, exploring the ways how a literary work lives on in the reception of subsequent generations and what makes it relevant today. Ulrich Luz, following the concepts of Gadamer and Jauss, adapted their ideas into a study of the reception of biblical texts. Luz’s main argument is that the Wirkungsgeschichte approach helps to explore the biblical text from new angles and to perceive other inter-pretations of the text in tradition and culture. The disadvantages of Wirkungsgeschichte listed in the article do not invalidate the impor-tance of this approach, but emphasize the fact that it must be skilfully used in combination with other methods, while clearly defining the meaning of Wirkungsgeschichte, the pur-pose and boundaries of the study. The considered advantages of the Wirkungsgeschichte approach actualize its use to enrich and broaden the understanding of the text and to approach it from new perspectives in order to better apply it in life.

While we observe the delicate procedures of historiography and philology, we do not unguardedly assume that they are exhaustive of all rigorous methods of thoughtful investigation. Moreover, in heeding the internal coherence of Alhazen's text, we do not simply lock his views within reductive contextual chronologies, or readily confine them to epochal matters of textual transmission. Our endeavour is therefore not exclusively set in view of serving the purposes of archival documentation, even if we preserve a thorough and sound sense of historicity. We ultimately recognize the philosophical pertinence of numerous subtle leitmotifs within Alhazen's thinking that speak to us in an effective timely manner, which is significantly relevant in its attuned bearings to the thrust of phenomenological theories of perception.

Résumé :
Abstract In the 1983 article “My Chances/Mes chances: A Rendezvous with Some Epicurean Stereophonies,” Jacques Derrida gives philological questions massive philosophical significance by reading the long âgon between idealist and materialist philosophy through a philological crux in the text of Lucretius’s De rerum natura (On the Nature of Things). Tracing philological debates that have surrounded Lucretius from the Renaissance onward, this article argues that Lucretius’s poetic theory of interlinked atomic and textual swerves and the philological history that has mediated them were important touchstones for both Derrida and the other major twentieth-century philosopher of difference, Gilles Deleuze. Additionally, the article argues that for both Derrida and Deleuze, the clinamen offers a theory not only of how atoms or alphabetical letters swerve or even split, but also of how a philosophical tradition such as materialism refuses to run in a straight, unitary line. This is a question of how to understand reception history: either as an unbroken tradition of faithful imitation and replication (a family genealogy, grouped under the name of the father, “Lucretius” for example), or else as something less patriarchal, less heteronormative, less faithful. Read this way, the swerve offers a rethinking of the methods of reception history itself.

The article examines the circumstances and history of the translation into French of S.L.Frank’s master’s thesis “The Object of Knowledge,” which was published in Russian in 1915 in Petrograd. The aim of the study is to determine the place and significance of this work in the creative biography and philosophical heritage of the Russian thinker. For this purpose, we used the synthetic method, which allows us to reconstruct in detail the history of the creation of the French translation, as well as the method of text analysis. First, the German context of Frank’s work on the “The Object of Knowledge” is presented. It has been established that the initiator of the publication of this book in France was G.D.Gurvich, who collaborated with the philosophers Louis Lavelle and René Le Senne, who founded the publishing series “Philosophy of Spirit” in Paris. Based on archival correspondence between Frank and Gurvich, as well as the book’s translator A.Сaffi and the editor of the translation G.P.Fedotov, the details of the preparation of the abridged version of the book for the French reader are revealed. To this end, we analyze the edits made by Frank in the author’s copy of the Russian edition of “The Object of Knowledge”. The last part of the article presents how the reception of this book in the French philosophical environment took place. A list of the currently known reviews of Frank’s work is given. Also noted is the fact that the book The Object of Knowledge was referenced by E.Gilson. Thus, we can conclude that the abridged French translation of Frank’s master’s thesis has had some influence on the French philosophers and reception of Russian philosophical thought in general.

t. In this article, the author describes the main points of critical reception of Kant's philosophy in the spiritual and academic theism of the pre-revolutionary period. The text shows that the criticism of Kant and the assimilation of some of his ideas in theological acad-emies were part of a general trend in Russian religious philosophy towards the German thinker. Kant's perception was multifaceted, varied and complex. Orthodox theists recognized Kant’s historical and philosophical significance, but at the same time they criticized him for rationalism, subjectivism, agnosticism, separation of the subjective and objective aspects, and extreme apriorism. Spiritual-academic philosophy was characterized by the desire to fill Kant's natural-philosophical apriorism with aposteriorism and to harmo-nize it with the data of the natural sciences. The author comes to the conclusion that the attitude of Orthodox thinkers to Kant's philosophy can show the specifics of Russian spiritual and academic thought.

This article takes the November 1965 letter of Poland's Roman Catholic bishops to their German counterparts as a starting point for historical inquiry into the nature and consequences of Catholic engagement in Polish-German reconciliation. The article begins with a close reading of the letter's text and its philosophical-theological underpinnings; then, it discusses the letter's reception history and its political consequences. The letter and its reception have a double significance: first, as an event in post-World War II European political, intellectual, and ecclesiastical history; second, as an ethical commentary on the spirit of dialogue promulgated in the constitutions of the Second Vatican Council. Although the letter helped to facilitate a process of Polish-German reconciliation that remains ongoing, this process has failed to assimilate the letter's ethics of forgiveness. That failure has reinforced the roadblocks that hamper Polish-German reconciliation almost two decades after the fall of communism in Europe.

The article reviews the autobiographical prose of Tsvetaeva in a rhetorical aspect. Narration in Tsvetaeva’s texts is structured by the intimate feelings of the addresser: any eventuality is subjectively characterized and evaluated. Author’s strategies are determined by the character of the narrator, content of the text they produce and its implied meaning. Tsvetaeva’s works are oriented on prepared readers, on recipients, who have a system of certain cultural and philosophical images and expectations. The interaction of the author and the reader suggests having common memories, understanding of cultural and historical context, merge of the question, set by the author with an expected answer, given by the reader on reception of the text. The recipient is actively involved in the process of empathy, cognitive area of the text becomes subject to congruous interpretations. In the course of hermeneutic research the subject of perception mentally creates their own text, reflecting the depth and degree of understanding of the original, as well as the chosen angle of reading. Rhetorical aspect of impact does not only suggest deep understanding of the meaning by the recipient, but points out the changes in recipient’s consciousness, which are results of such impact. The article broadens the perceptions of cultural and historical context of the epoch and of Tsvetaeva as one of the greatest artists of the XXth century, the genre features and philosophical and ethical significance of her autobiographical prose.

Résumé :
The article deals with the issue of organizing "multi-layer" reading at the literature lesson. A reader’s practice is proposed, where a hermeneutical approach is implemented, which allows to identify the socio-philosophical dominant of the text and on its basis to comprehend the architectonics of the poem. On the example of studying the poem by R.I. Rozhdestvensky “The Plane left” in the 9th grade, the author shows the evolution of the reader: from variants of everyday understanding of the meaning of the word “fight” to the sociophilosophical level. Going beyond the limits of the studied work allows us to judge the author’s worldview and compare it with the views of other poets of the sixties, which contributes to the development of interpretive abilities of ninth-graders. The poetics of R.I. Rozhdestvensky’s poems is mastered by means of commented reading, which reveals information gaps in the text, and lingo-poetic analysis, which reveals the figurative structure based on the antithesis. The inductive method of comprehending meaning focuses students’ attention on non-linear connections (contextual synonyms, parallelisms) that arise when comparing the semantic dominant with the information flows in the text of the ballad. Successive synesthetic images are transforming the whole complex of realistic paintings in the final symbol of romantic ballads that promotes awareness of the philosophical problem of the significance and fragility of human life, the difficulty of the trials that befell the man of the second half of the twentieth century. In this analysis, it becomes possible to identify significant semantic “nodes” for interpreting the work. The final “convolution” of information about the text of R.I. Rozhdestvensky’s occurs in the interpretive activity of schoolchildren who correlate this work with the work of R.I. Rozhdestvensky’s, which allows us to identify the constancy of his beliefs throughout his life and the dynamics of changes in leitmotif images-symbols in his work. Comparison of the role of socio-philosophical dominant in the work of poets of the sixties contributes to the students’ comprehension of the philosophical category of unity of diversity on the example of literature. Reading practice, combining the relationship between the figurative and logical in the presentation of material and the technological nature of the educational process, provides students with a certain degree of freedom to philosophize in the classroom, and the teacher is guaranteed for the effectiveness of its use.

Résumé :
In our paper, we make a brief presentation and contextualization of Schulze's text, of which we present here a translation, “Aphorisms about the absolute”. In this text, Schulze develops, in an ironic style — or, in the words of Vieweg, pseudo-ironic —, his critique of the philosophies of identity Schelling and Hegel. In our exposition, we aim to point out, first, how, before the publication of the Aphorisms, Schelling and Hegel understood skepticism in general and evaluated Schulze’s skepticism in particular. Next, we shall see how Schulze responded to Schelling and Hegel’s objections with his Aphorisms, and how the reception of this text by Schelling and Hegel was quite different — so different, in fact, that their disagreements about philosophy and the philosophical method begin to surface, where they were hidden before in favor of their adherence to a similar philosophical project in its more general lines. In the next step, we examine what are the conceptual elements discussed in Schulze's text that would be central to the understanding of this philosophical and methodological divergence between Schelling and Hegel, and which will culminate in their definitive rupture with the publication of the Phenomenology of Spirit. These conceptual elements we believe to be found, particularly, in the treatment of the concepts of form, matter (or content) and determination. Or, more specifically: in the objection, raised by Schulze, that any conception of the absolute based on the concepts of form and content could only be a relative conception, since not only the distinction between content and form is merely formal, but also any content, thought in its distinction and opposition to form, can only be relative and, therefore, formal content. We shall, then, conclude this criticism will be decisive for the way in which Hegel will come to think of the absolute not only as a substance, but also as a subject.

Résumé :
The article analyzes how the multi-meaning universal figurative basis of the myth of the sacred labyrinth is artistically comprehended within the novel House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. The labyrinth here is the essential basis of content and form. The study proved the following. (1) The writer, revealing the image of the labyrinth, combines numerous discourses (architectural, philosophical, philological, poetic, metaphorical, marginal), and in all the cases the labyrinth is the root of itself, i.e. acts as a rhizome. (2) The novel contains all the semantic components of the traditional plot (the architectonics of the labyrinth, the monstrous creature in the labyrinth and the idea of sacrifice to it, the thread of Ariadne, the hero’s exit from the labyrinth), but they are subjected to significant transformations, which leads to a radical rethinking of the myth and a revision of the character symbolism of the novel. (3) The ancient world-cosmos, the world-tree in the novel is opposed by the world-chaos, the world-rhizome. There is no semantic center and all connections are non-linear, structureless, confusing here; the ancient world as a harmonious unfolding Cosmos is opposed by a postmodern simulacrum. (4) Both the existential mode of understanding the Knossos myth and the matrix of the traditional plot are changing, the matrix is filled with new content related to historical and cultural innovations and the very way of understanding the history of the labyrinth, the Minotaur, Theseus and Ariadne. (5) The image of the rhizomatic labyrinth determines a special form of the ergodic, non-linear novel House of Leaves, in which the main text is adjacent to the text in the notes, growing into an independent story, where the plot lines spread out in a chaotic mess and suddenly finish. (6) The rhizome of the philosophical foundation of the novel is manifested in the synthesis of various genre elements (from horror and gonzo journalism to gothic, psychedelic, psychoanalytic, ergodic, fantastic, cinematic, graphic, beatnik and psychoanalytic novels) and in the idea of a synthesis of the arts, primarily fiction and cinematography. (7) The organizational principle of the rhizomatic labyrinth is realized in a chaotic composition, fundamental fragmentation, quotation and collage of the text, in the freedom of many narrative practices and narrative instances, which exclude the idea of absolute Truth and the only interpretation.

The article updates the memoirs of the famous philosopher, logician, theorist of literature, translator Pavel Sergeevich Popov (1892–1964), dedicated to the pioneer of philosophical and psychological thought and the founder of a full-fledged Russian psychological school in the first half of the 20th century, Georgy Ivanovich Chelpanov (1862–1936). Below publishing second part of Chapter V “G.I. Chelpanov” of P.S. Popov’s memoirs “Images of the past. Memories from university, gymnasium, and childhood years”. P.S. Popov’s text allows you to re-look at G.I. Chelpanov as a person and philosopher, not only to appreciate his personal qualities as “a propagandist, an agitator, and even an advertiser” of experimental psychology but also to update his philosophical ideas. The value of P.S. Popov’s archival materials lies in the discovery of additional research perspectives for understanding both the published heritage of G.I. Chelpanov and the entire historical, cultural, and intellectual context of philosophical discussions of the first half of the 20th century. Domestic intellectual culture’s experience shows the productivity of the reception of ideas only in connection with the specific contexts of their creation and the fate of their creator. Therefore, understanding the inextricable link between personality and thought is essential for actualizing the philosophical and humanitarian heritage.

Résumé :
The article analyses a set of philosophical statements made by and attributed to Ivan Karamazov in Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, in order to answer the question as to what kind of philosophy Ivan may be said to express in the novel. My close reading reveals that there is a significant distinction between, on the one hand, Ivan's most radical statements, that is his rational egoism and the idea that "everything is permitted," which are always given in reported speech, and on the other the “Ivan of direct speech,” a character characterized by far more moral sensibility (e.g. in the Pro et contra part). On the basis of these findings the article seeks to bring together two traditions in the reception of Dostoevsky—the philosophical and the narratological. By letting these approaches inform one another I suggest ways in which the structural organization of the text is itself a bearer of philosophical meaning. Moreover, the article takes seriously Bakhtin's claim that Dostoevsky's heroes are not merely stable representations of ideas, but engage with them through dialogue and encounters with others, as exemplified by Ivan Karamazov himself as well as by other characters' responses to his articulations.

Résumé :
The proposed text is one of the key works of non-philosophy that allows us to draw a demarcation line between the old and the new mode of existence of philosophy as a science of philosophy; otherwise, non-philosophy as a science of philosophical decision, distinct from meta-philosophy. Written in 1993 as a response to the remarks left in the program text «What is Philosophy?» by Deleuze and Guattari, the non-philosophical work attempts to emancipate non-philosophy from the shackles of philosophical transcendence, which asserts itself through the subjugation of immanence in favor of multiplicity. Deleuze and Guattari see non-philosophy as one of the «most interesting attempts in contemporary philosophy» to work with immanence, combining, according to Deleuze and Guattari, the philosophical and the non-philosophical, where the latter, according to Laruelle's thought, finds itself pushed to the periphery — the Other of philosophy. The reception of the project of non-philosophy, Laruelle notes, is distorted by philosophy's attempts to incorporate the radical immanence of the Real, which is itself affected by non-philosophy. Philosophers clone Laruelle's Universe as substance, of which Spinoza is the king of immanence. In his Reply, Laruelle details the basic principles and ideas of non-philosophy, as well as the mechanics of dealing with philosophies as datum — mere «datum» or «raw material». At the same time, analyzing Deleuzian thought, which, in Laruelle's view, has never been able to escape from the «self-sufficiency» of philosophy — its recursive loop on itself — Laruelle, recognizing Deleuze as one of the greatest philosophers, argues that the aim of non-philosophy is not to destroy philosophy, but only to suspend its quasi-self-sufficiency and thus awaken it from its dogmatic slumber. Non-philosophy becomes a way of doing away with philosophy constituted by philosophical decision, which means: doing away with every possible philosophy. The demonstration of the method of the science of philosophy is realized in the extension of the Spinozism discovered by Deleuze and Guattari in non-philosophy, which receives the name of non-spinozism expressed by new principles.

Résumé :
The study of the peculiarities that the reception of such an essential concept of the philosophical Corpus Dionysiacum Areopagiticum as ὑπερούσιος in ancient Slavic translations has is promising. It allows not only to understand better the internal perspective of the development of philosophical terminology in Rus’-Ukraine, where in the 15th–17th centuries, there existed a significant number of manuscripts of the corpus, but also to strengthen the argument in favor of its dating precisely in the 5th century. According to the conceptual features that are present in the Greek text of De divinis nominibus and are confirmed in the studies of Slavic translations of the Corpus Areopagiticum, this work, preserved also in other languages, could belong to an author, who uniquely combined his Christian views and a philosophical vision of the world that was inspired by his Neoplatonic education at the Alexandrian School of Philosophy under the guidance of the eminent Neoplatonic thinker and mathematician Hypatia, who was well acquainted with the ideas of Plotinus and the whole Alexandrian intellectual tradition. It is possible that this author, who used the ideas of Plotinus and Porphyry and for the first time unfolded the idea of the Christian God as the Hyperousios in the aspect of the Christian Triad in his philosophical hymns and treatises, could be Synesius of Cyrene, Bishop of Ptolemais.

Résumé :
This paper addresses the glosses of the first edition of George Chapman's philosophical elegy, The Shadow of Night (1594), as a specific and common practice of prescriptive work, produced by Renaissance authors following the ancient tradition of the auctoris interpretatio. Assuming the gloss as an exposition and scrutiny of the places of poetic invention and elocution, Chapman puts himself in the position of both annotator and authorizer of his text, defining a particular legibility for the poem within the learned circles of the English court of Shakespeare’s time. Considering the view of the glossarial practice as an emulation of the ancient scholium work of ‘exposing the difficulties’ of a literary text and thus legitimizing it as fit to enter the proper tradition, this paper discusses, 1. the implications of Chapman's glosses for the poem's immediate reception; 2. the importance of authorized role models (Servius, Macrobius, Cornutus) for the glossarial practice; and 3. the idea that a text does not possess a congenital clearness of its own, but can only be understood through the continuous process of a specific glossarial assessment.

Résumé :
Translation Studies comprises different approaches to translation, e.g., linguistics-oriented, functionalist, discourse register analysis, philosophical, reception theory, among many others. As for reception theory, it is found that when and where a given text is translated and the influences it is likely to exert on its audience is very useful as an approach to translation. The time and place of the text reception then tends to be significant. The current article presents a critical and elaborate analysis of the (sub)cultural environment in Palestine which has failed to assure better reception of the translation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) as manifested in a Palestinian context, but rather has mounted perceptibly some social and political tension in the reception; the original version of CEDAW Convention was first published by the United Nations of Human Rights: Office of the High Commissioner on 18 December 1979, followed by the translations into four languages (Arabic, Chinese, French and Spanish). The article first looks at contiguous and overlapping disciplines: reception theory and translation bringing them together for a stimulating vision for an eclectic approach in which translation has established good relations with multifarious disciplines. The article then carefully examines the fairly comprehensible translations of the convention to an Arab audience, taking cue from Meidasari’s (2014) reception theory in which reader’s involvement in the initial understanding and developing interpretation is fully considered. The article then scrutinizes Arabic translation which has quite a different contextual and function, obviously a mere transference of a range of meanings inherent in a given utterance across languages and cultures; however, when Palestinian National Authority (PNA) became a full member recognizing CEDAW in 2014, the translation has been given a new lease of life and it exceeds mere ostentatious linguistic realization of the Source Language (SL) to become an issue of immense importance for a text reception whereby the translation is thus expected to gain instrumentality, that is, to meet and to fit in with the Target Language (TL) expectations. The reception of CEDAW Convention into Arabic decades after it was issued, namely 1979 stresses the importance of time and place. The time difference of the reception of the translation is considered of paramount importance. The findings of the present article, however, shows that the reception of CEDAW Convention into Arabic combines in an intricate web of intersecting political and ideological relations. The same TL triggers two different reception groups on the part of the TL audience, and thus creates a kind of overwhelming tug-of-war relation in the groups. For the first group, the translation is the coat of arms for Palestinian women to enable them to fight for their rights and has consequently adopted adulatory tone as it conforms to the readers’ aesthetic expectations. For the other group, however, it constitutes the emasculation and marginalization of meritorious pillars Islam. The article concludes that the Palestine has been invariably buffeted by social and political upheaval, and the translation role should be expected to drastically change. Before the 1990s, the translation has actually a minimal role to play as Palestinians had been through the stiffest resistance against Israeli occupation which openly violated (and is still violating) international law. With the establishment of the PNA in 1994 which has exercised civil control on West Bank, new social and political realities emerged, paving the way for a kind of more social-international interaction. Thus, based on social milieu (be secular or Islamic) the translation is received. It has come in for criticism by Islamist, but applauded by secularist regardless of being two sides of the same coin.

Résumé :
This article deals with the study «Sophia im Denken Vladimir Solov'evs – eine Ästhetische Rekonstruktion» written by the well-known German Slavist and researcher in the field of literary studies Henrike Stahl (2019). The main topic of the study – the coming into being and evolution of the concept of «Sofia» in Solovyov’s heritage – is indicated. Attention is drawn on the originality of the author's interdisciplinary research strategy on Solovyov's heritage: both Solovyov’s literary and philosophical works are analyzed by the author from the point of view of the thinker’s mystical experience, which gives, in the author's opinion, the opportunity to read his philosophic works as fictional texts, and these latter as philosophical statements. It is concluded that this approach is extremely productive, since the scrupulous study of the text, which is characteristic of philological science, has been supplemented and enriched by its philosophical interpretation. Also considered is the structural unity of Vl. Solovyov’s creativity manifested in the composition and stylistic features of his philosophical prose and revealed in constant ternary and binary oppositions permeated with holistic conceptions. The scrupulousness of H. Stahl's monograph, the originality of its methodological strategy, and attention to various aspects of Vl. Solovyov’s heritage allow to consider that work as one of the most striking studies of Solovyov’s philosophy undertaken in the 21st century, which in turn allows to conclude that the active German-language reception of the creative heritage of the domestic philosopher, which went on throughout the 20th century, continues in our time, keeping Germany well ahead in Western Solovyov studies.

Résumé :
“Hughie or the Tale of a Memory” is the working title of the first play that the experienced artist Alexa Visarion has directed for the independent theater (a production released in 2017). The purpose of my paper, which is an investigation of several drama reviews that discuss the play’s first night, is to prove that – despite difficulties with cultural reception and public taste (given a text by O’Neill that is 80 years old, as well as the director’s first time with an informal theater production) - this performance was a succesful attempt at communicating and debating the conflicted values of American pragmatism and equally a crowning of the Romanian director’s effort to stage O’Neill’s plays in our country. Relying on insights from the American doctrine of Pragmatism, I will try to show how O’Neill’s text challenges philosophical premises that are inbred in the American status-quo, thereby making his plays “anti-materialistic” by promoting a fatalistic approach to existence.

Résumé :
The article updates the memoirs of the famous philosopher, logician, theorist of literature, translator Pavel Sergeevich Popov (1892–1964), dedicated to the pioneer of philosophical and psychological thought and the founder of a full-fledged Russian psychological school in the first half of the 20th century, Georgy Ivanovich Chelpanov (1862–1936). The article precedes the publication of Chapter V “G.I. The author proves that the value of P.S. Popov’s archival materials lies in the discovery of additional research perspectives for understanding both the published heritage of G.I. Chelpanov and the entire historical, cultural, and intellectual context of philosophical discussions of the first half of the 20th century. According to the author, domestic intellectual culture’s experience shows the productivity of the reception of ideas only in connection with the specific contexts of their creation and the fate of their creator. Therefore, understanding the inextricable link between personality and thought is essential for actualizing the philosophical and humanitarian heritage.

Watts, Gabriel. « Reading Hume on the passions ». Belgrade Philosophical Annual 1, no 34 (2021) : 73–94. http://dx.doi.org/10.5937/bpa2134073w.

Résumé :
This paper provides a reception history of Book Two of the Treatise-Of the passions-as well as an attempt to reconcile Hume's ambitions to systematicity in Book Two with the distracted and distracting nature of the text. We currently have, I think, a good sense of the philosophical importance of Book Two within Hume's science of human nature. Yet we have not made much progress on understanding Book Two on its own terms, and especially why Book Two so often seems on the verge of falling into an explanatory heap. I aim to rectify this situation by giving a reading of Book Two that makes sense of the philosophical importance of Hume's system of the passions, yet also explains why he encounters so many difficulties in setting out his system; such that he is often forced to stretch his explanations to the very edge of the credible. I contend that Hume's system of the passions is best viewed as an unstable explanatory compound, one that progressively dissolves as Hume's explanatory intentions become increasingly ambitious.

Résumé :
An analysis of Calvin's multifaceted use of the Roman-Jewish historian Josephus reveals several things of importance both for scholarship on Renaissance historical and biblical criticism generally, and for Calvin studies in particular. Calvin's reception of Josephus was quite extraordinary in its breadth, and complex in its employment and function. References to the historian are peppered throughout his works in a wide array of contexts, from the special authority of Moses to the length of the Sea of Galilee. Significantly, Calvin not only used Josephus as a source for raw historical data, but also employed him to philosophical, theological, and political ends as well. And while the reformer is not unequivocally positive in his judgment of the historian as a reliable source, an overwhelming majority of the instances where Calvin cites Josephus's texts are used to augment his exegetical works, and at times Josephus's authority comes close to overriding that of the literal biblical account. The purpose of this paper is to show how Calvin's engagement with Josephus in his commentaries reveals him to have been an able and discerning critic who would at times go to great lengths in order to sort out perceived discrepancies or to fill in historiographical lacunae pertinent to the biblical story, but also an opportunistic humanist who would use whatever resources he had at his disposal for clarifying the historical background of the biblical text.

Résumé :
Abstract: In the Jessica chapter of his 1838 Shakespeare’s Maidens and Women , Heinrich Heine provocatively identified Shylock as a “well-trained werewolf.” Was Heine also alluding to the characterization of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing’s eponymous protagonist Nathan the Wise as a “Jewish wolf in philosophical sheep’s clothing” that would ironize the seemingly self-evident coupling of the two foremost Jewish characters to appear on German stages in the correlation Nathan:Shylock::good Jew:bad Jew? This article investigates that possibility first by situating each lupine image within its respective text (as well as noting Shakespeare’s use of canid aspersions of Shylock in Merchant of Venice ). It then examines the German and English critical reception of Shylock and other Jewish stage characters (e.g., Richard Cumberland’s The Jew ) to which Heine would have had access, after which it directs attention to the deployment of “Shylock” as an epithet, the references to Lessing and Nathan, and the use of lupine and canine figures in Heine’s letters and writings. In addition, the article charts the history of the specifically German-Jewish reception of Nathan /Nathan and indicates their late, post-“Jessica” coining as the opposed faces of the Jewish ducat exchanged in the German imaginary. It concludes by discussing Ernst Simon’s invocation, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Nathan ’s publication, of Heine’s characterization of Shylock in order to turn the by-then-commonplace polarity on its head.

The following contribution focuses on Ingeborg Bachmann’s reception of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s philosophy, particularly the central theses of his famous Tractatus logico-philosophicus, published in 1922. Her two radio essays from 1953, Sagbares und Unsagbares – Die Philosophie Ludwig Wittgensteins, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Zu einem Kapitel der jüngsten Philosophiegeschichte show Bachmann’s deep understanding of essential aspects in Wittgenstein’s early philosophy. Bachmann was also responsible for the German publication of Wittgenstein’s Werkausgabe Band I, including the Tractatus and his second masterpiece Philosophical Investigations in 1960. On several occasions Bachmann mentions the influence Wittgenstein had on her. The text will focus on selected topics of his philosophy that also had a strong impact on Bachmann, such as his famous concept of the unsayable, the limits of language, or his understanding of the Western civilization and culture at his times.

Résumé :
Over the past decades, Ukrainian literary studies have been actively dealing with the interdisciplinary analysis of literary texts that are functioning on the verge of different artistic systems. This phenomenon may be explained by the tendency of art to the cross-genre transgression, which results in the complexity of text bounding principles, whereby the texts themselves are not only borrowed from other types of art or interpreted, but have also their codes creatively deformed. Today, however, the issue of genre continuity in the discourse of the poetics of intermediality is getting especially significant, and in particular, the issue of the specifics of the reception and transformation of literary genres in cinematography. The cinematic novella “A Spring for the Thirsty” (1964) by I. Drach is a text that is close in its parameters to the peculiarities of parable poetics, which has been fully implemented in the film by Y. Ilyenko (1965). Direct instruction and unambiguous didacticism (characteristic of the parable genre) are reinforced by philosophical reflection (from prologue to epilogue). The key character is portrayed primarily through the psychological motivation of his actions, with features of a certain idealization of the image in the dichotomous tandem of “parents and children”. In terms of parable specifics, particular emphasis has been laid on the tendency to special generalization, which is marked with the highest degree of conventionality, the principle of abstraction of the idea, and the universality of the chronotope. I. Drach actively uses dreams or visions (metaphorical or symbolic) that are montaged with the main events of the text, thus relaying old Levko’s inner experiences, sub-consciousness, fears, or hopes, while blurring the line between reality and unreality. The use of such duality in the narrative of the text, reinforced by the active insertion of intertextual and intermedial codes, offers a deep philosophical subtext inherent in the parable.

Résumé :
AbstractIn modern scholarship, much ink has been spilled over the significance of St. Augustine in the history of Western philosophy and theology. However, little effort has been made to clarify the legacy of Augustine in East Asia, especially his contribution to China during the early Jesuit missionary work through the Maritime Silk Road. The present article attempts to fill this lacuna and provide a philosophical analysis of the encounter of Chinese indigenous religions with St Augustine, by inquiring into why and how Augustine was taken as a model for the Chinese in their acceptance of the Christian faith. The analysis is split into three parts. The first part reflects on the contemporary disputations over the quality of the paraphrasing work of the early Jesuits, analyzing the validity of the allegedly careless inaccuracies in their introduction of Augustine's biography. The second part analyses some rarely discussed Chinese translations of Augustine, which I recently found in the Nanjing Union Theological Seminary, with particular focus on their ideological context. In particular, the paraphrased text concerning Augustine's theory of sin and the two cities will be highlighted. The third part goes a step further in exploring the reason why Augustine was considered an additional advantage in dealing with the conflicts between Christian and Confucian values. The primary contribution this essay makes is to present a philosophical inquiry into the role of Augustine in the early acceptance of Christianity in China by suggesting that a strategy of “Confucian-Christian synthesis” had been adopted by the Jesuit missionaries. Thereby, they accommodated Confucian terms without dropping the core values of the orthodox Catholic faith. The conclusion revisits the critics’ arguments and sums up with an evaluation of the impact of Augustine's religious values in the indigenization of Christianity in China.

Résumé :
Ivan Ohiienko, as a historical and creative personality from among those who formed the idea of Ukrainianness at the beginning of the 20th century, during the active national liberation struggles, in contrast to the harmful utopian ideas of Bolshevism, needs special attention in the stormy present. The toolkit of literary postmodernism provides rich opportunities for rereading previously written works. In the case of the philosophical mysteries of Ivan Ohienko, we are talking about those texts that were not noticed by critics at the time of publication and did not receive a thorough ideo-logical and textual analysis. Therefore, the approach proposed in the current study is partly compensatory regarding the proper appreciation of Metropolitan Hilarion’s works. Therefore, the article attempts to reread Ivan Ohienko’s mystery «The Birth of Man. Good and Evil in the world» in view of those semiotic, structural and poetic markers that enable the modern reception of ideological markers in the direction of the postmodern worldview paradigm, dominant for the modern reader. The integra-tion of the text into the modern philosophical, cultural, historical discourse based on the technique of careful reading is a winning solution in an eff ort to reasonably give the author’s philosophical mysteries a new life, but not using far-fetched journalistic generalizations, torn from the fabric of the text itself. The proposed method of text analysis, based on the technique of close reading, made it possible to identify numer-ous features that fully or partially correspond to the creative searches of modern post-modern authors, namely: the idea of the relativity of truth, the fullness of human life with suff ering, the idea of the futility of trying to know the world, the futility of scien-tifi c knowledge of the world, the harmful infl uence of the crowd on creative individu-alism, the abandonment of man in this world, the lack of a clear distinction between good and evil, truth and wrong, in particular due to the appropriation of the right to produce the truth (often it belongs to the crowd or a representative of the crowd), etc. In the spirit of deconstructivism, the author involuntarily constructed replicas of the forces of Evil more convincingly than the fi nal plot decision in favor of the dominant and fi nal victory of Good. At least the situation in the world today proves that, unlike the plot of the mystery, Evil has not lost the fi nal battle for the soul of Man, but is still winning in an unequal existential struggle. The use of this type of text analysis can be useful for re-reading the texts of other literary fi gures, important in the paradigm of culture-creating and nation-creating Ukrainian continuum.

Résumé :
In the European literature and culture of the interwar period we can observe increased interest in the physicality and the process of dying. Novels which touch upon these subjects are described by some scholars and critics as “sanitarian literature”. The following text is discussing the issues of the works of Max Blecher; his novel “Scarred Hearts” can be included in the circle of mentioned “sanitarian literature”. Blecher’s novel presents certain strategies of dealing with a terminal illness and the finiteness of human existence, as well as the alientation associated with these. The most frequently cited interpretive trail in this case is the philosophy of Kierkegaard, Jaspers and Heidegger. In the first part of the article, I refer to Blecher’s biography and his reception, while in the next part I contrast selected excerpts from his novel with philosophical hermeneutics.
