Résumé :
This investigation, which was started in April, 1988, was designed to assess the extent of automation in academic and public libraries and school library media centers in the state of South Carolina as well as the prevailing attitude toward library automation. School media specialists were surveyed at their annual convention, and public and academic librarians were mailed the same surveys to ascertain the percentage of media centers in the process of automating a part or all its processes and to determine their attitude toward library automation. From the results of the study, one sees that the direction of library automation in the state's public school, academic, and public toward the use of media centers automation. Only is progressing eight percent slowly of the school media centers represented by surveying the members of the South Carolina Association of School Librarians were automated; only 30 percent. Of the surveyed academic and public 1ibraries were automated. However, the scores attained on the attitude scales suggested a desire to quickly than to date. Progress toward library automation more both public and academic librarians expressed a positive attitude toward library automation. School media center specialists also expressed a positive attitude toward library automation. These positive attitudes were explained by using an author- composed questionnaire based on the Likert scale and H. H. Remmers' scale.

Résumé :
The researcher proposed to advice in the selection of an Integrated Online Library System (IOLS) for use in the 103 school media centers in the Palm Beach County Schools, Florida. This was accomplished by evaluating the two finalists of those vendors who answered the district's Request for Proposal (RFP). Of the five vendors who responded to the RFP. CLSI and SIRSI were selected as the systems most likely to meet the needs of the media centers of the school district. An overview and definition of IOLS was first discussed. This overview then related itself to the needs of the school district as presented in the RFP. A selection criteria was then designed from previous research on the subject to help find the ideal system. The history and development of an Integrated Online Library System was important in seeing where the systems have originated in contrast to the systems in the Eighties to the also revealed the present time. Literature IOLS principles of operation. The Request for Proposal reflected the needs assessment discussed over several years of committee meetings of representatives from various schools. The committees explored IOLS automated options and compared these options. The RFP outlined the system requirements. Thoughts on staff attitudes while planning for a system were also considered. Each system was evaluated with the criteria outlined in the RFP. The background and capabilities of both systems were explored. This exploration took place where by the benchmark tests, on-site demonstrations systems were in use daily, conferences with the vendors, systems. And reading literature reviews on both systems. Evaluation guidelines and criteria were found in library resources. The functions required for terminal access requirements, process for data conversion, vendor background and reliability, contained in these library resources. And the cost were contained in these library resources. The results of this study culminated in the official recommendation of the SIRSI to be purchased by the district's school board. It was the expectation of the author of this document to see the purchase of the recommended system by the school board and have it implemented in all the schools in the district within a three year period following the submission of the recommendation.

Résumé :
Denna uppsats undersöker en informationskampanj från Fair Trade Center (FTC) som drevs under hösten 2012 under namnet A wage to live on.

The main purpose of this study was to identify the major obstacles to cooperation as perceived by school library media specialists in the state of Mississippi and to determine if members of the Coastal Mississippi Library Cooperative (CMLC) believe that there are fewer obstacles to cooperation than do non-members. The secondary purpose was to evaluate the CMLC to some extent to determine if success was achieved through organization when defined by the variables, planning, governance, funding, communication, administration, and evaluation. The population of the study was all of the librarians (academic, public, school, and special) in the six-county area which comprises the CMLC, and a random sample of public school librarians throughout the remainder of the state. All of the school librarians were sent a questionnaire that requested their responses to statements of barriers to cooperation. All of the librarians in the CMLC region were sent a questionnaire to obtain their perceptions of participation in the CMLC. Pour librarians, members of the CMLC, were Interviewed to obtain information on the organizational factors of the CMLC. Data received from school library media specialists were submitted to various statistical tests. The Chi-Square statistic was used on the demographic portion of the questionnaire, which revealed that four of the variables and the dependent variable, membership in the CMLC, were significantly different. A t-test performed on the barriers to cooperation section produced no significant differences between the member and non-member responses. The perceptions of participation in the CMLC data revealed that there were differences among the four library systems (academic, public, school, and special) involved, but most of the respondents considered the CMLC to be successful. Data from the interview also revealed that the CMLC was successful in its organization. Due to the overall low response to the survey, the stated hypotheses could not be accepted; however, many of the findings and implications should be useful in helping to eliminate several obstacles to cooperation in Mississippi.

Abstract  In 2001, the Australian government implemented the Pacific Solution, which is known today as Operation Sovereign Borders. This policy is designed to hold asylum-seekers arriving by boat to Australia on Pacific islands that are geographically and politically external to Australia, keeping them in what is commonly known as offshore processing and detention centers. This thesis examines the way in which these offshore processing detention centers are portrayed in the media and provides a comparative study between Australian and international publications through qualitative text analysis of the consistently occurring themes in news coverage of the issue. The importance of the thesis originates from the previous lack of international media coverage and criticism revolving around the offshore processing detention centers.

Mattock, Lindsay Kistler. « Media arts centers as alternative archival spaces| Investigating the development of archival practices in non-profit media organizations ». Thesis, University of Pittsburgh, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3647984.

Texte intégral
Résumé :

In the United States, archival institutions have prioritized the preservation of commercial and Hollywood cinema overlooking small-scale media production by non-professionals and independent media artists. Media arts centers, however, have played a pivotal role in the continued access, use, and preservation of materials produced by the communities that they serve. These non-profit media collectives were imagined as a distributed network of organizations supporting the production, exhibition and study of media; serving as information centers about media resources; and supporting regional preservation efforts. However, media arts centers have remained over-looked and unexplored by the archival field. This dissertation seeks to shift this balance, including these artist-run organizations as part of the network of archives and collecting institutions preserving independent media.

Using case study methodologies this study investigated the practices at three media arts centers, Pittsburgh Filmmakers, Paper Tiger Television, and the Termite Television Collective, seeking to understand the role of these organizations in the collection and preservation of independent media and the development of archival practices in non-profit media organizations. The study places each of these organizations in the wider history of media arts center movement in the United States and looks broadly at the development of archives and archival practices within these organizations. Framing media arts centers as maker-spaces and archival spaces, this dissertation argues for a critique of professional archival practices and a redefinition of the standards for preservation of audiovisual materials.

The Media Arts Building for a small Hawaiian college was designed following the guidelines set forth in the Hawaii Loa College International Design Competition. The central issue of this design problem concerned the dualism of the South Pacific cultures with the high-technology characteristic of the twenty-first century. Large characteristic columns were used to give the building complex a unique identity to correlate with the concerns for culture. In response to high-technology, the building site accepted the satellite dishes as artistic forms in the sculpture gardens. The campus plan was reorganized centering concern on the college as a place of education which led to the formation of a central quadrangle.

Résumé :
Writing center directors (WCDs) often situate their programs in physical and virtual spaces without fully studying the pedagogical and political implications of their decisions. Without intense study, writing centers risk building programs within spaces that undermine their missions and philosophies. In The Production of Space, Henri Lefebvre argues that "From the analytic standpoint, the spatial practice of a society is revealed through the deciphering of its space" (38). The study of space also reveals important political and financial priorities within the institution. Furthermore, the positioning of buildings and the spatial layout of a campus display the institution's priorities and attitudes toward writing center work. Theorizing the Online Writing Lab (OWL) through the lens of cultural and political geographies, it becomes apparent that the physical spaces of many writing centers are not as sustainable as WCDs might like, and in many ways, they are marginalized within the larger institution. This dissertation prompts a rearticulation of place and space in the writing center. In this dissertation, I argue that in an attempt to rethink current practices, the virtual space of the writing center should perpetuate, extend, and improve the social practices employed in our physical spaces. I draw from mapping exercises to inform my critique in an attempt to advance our understanding of writing center physical and virtual spaces. The changing geographical and cultural landscape of the institution demands that writing centers pay close attention to spatial implications as they employ technology to create dynamic virtual resources and more sustainable spaces. I rearticulate writing center spaces through cognitive and digital mapping, urban planning, and architectural theories. I make several contributions through this work: theoretical, to rearticulate the physical and virtual space of writing center work; political, to understand the constructions of the writing center's pedagogical spaces; and pedagogical, to understand best practices for creating virtual spaces that enhance learning, unlike those we have seen before or have had available in the writing center.

CHDS State/Local
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
The push by the Obama administration for a more transparent, citizen-centric government has created a new way of thinking among federal, state, and local governments: citizen participation has become a mainstay of newly written policies across the country. The adoption of Web 2.0 technologies, particularly social media, within fusion centers and local law enforcement entities could enable a more expedient exchange of information among fusion centers, law enforcement, and the public. The ability to collect and disseminate information on a real-time basis via fusion centers and law enforcement is key to the overall success of the homeland security mission; it is impossible for the federal government to have sole responsibility for safeguarding the homeland from the confines of Washington, D.C. Because fusion centers and law enforcement agencies are state and local entities, they have the capability to obtain information at a grassroots level and have the advantage of knowing the local environment, including potential targets and vulnerabilities. Social media, if leveraged appropriately, could enhance communication among fusion centers, law enforcement, and private citizens to better detect and deter terrorism. This research explores potential benefits and implementation challenges of integrating social media into fusion center and local law enforcement frameworks.

Kreis, Nellie S. « A Feasibility Study of the Implementation of CD ROM Databases in Secondary School Library Media Centers ». NSUWorks, 1987. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/650.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
School library media centers have traditionally provided students and teachers with information resources in two formats: print materials, including books, periodicals and microforms; and audiovisual materials including film, television and audio devices. Recent technological advances and the changing nature of information/publishing industries now suggest it might be desirable for school library media centers to provide information resources in an electronic format including computer, compact disc, and/or video disc databases. This paper examines the feasibility of introducing a site-specific periodical literature CD ROM database into the secondary school library media center in three ways: an attitude survey, a queuing analysis and a cost analysis. Four secondary schools in the Dade County Public School system were selected to receive a CD ROM database on a trial basis. A posttest only, equivalent-groups AB design was used to measure students' confidence in their abilities to locate periodical literature, the student’s perceptions of the level of difficulty in the task and the availability of such literature in the school library media center, and student satisfaction with the school library media center and its collection. The study also applied standard quantitative techniques, i.e. queuing models and simulation, to the use of the traditional print periodical index and a CD ROM periodical index. To develop a queuing model, at the index table and the service or search times were needed. Service times were based on 1088 observations of students using The Readers guide to Periodical Literature and INFOTRAC II, a CD. ROM database. Arrival rates were based on two typical school library media center patron access patterns--a "worst" case and a "best" case scenario .Using this information, two models were constructed. Each model was run twice, once for The Readers Guide to Periodical Literature and once for INFOTRAC II. The cost analysis included such components as the school discretionary budget and district funding for media specialist salaries. School discretionary expenditures included initial start-up costs for hardware and recurring costs for subscription and supplies. Media specialist salary costs to the district calculated based on the time used and the for instruction in periodical research and intervention and help in student searches. The attitude survey showed that in every area tested, INFOTRAC II users had a more positive attitude toward periodical research and the school library media center than did Readers Guide users. The search data gathered for the queuing analysis were of itself significant. Student’s using The Readers Guide to Periodical Literature took an average of 13.68 minutes to complete a search. INFOTRAC II users needed only 5.4 minutes. The queuing analyses showed that a single CD ROM terminal, when compared to a seven volume READER-S GUIDE, makes a poorly planned media center activity worse, and a well-planned media center activity better. The financial impact of the CD ROM database is felt most by the school-site discretionary budget. Annual subscription costs for CD ROM products are significantly higher than print indexes. Data collected indicated that the CD ROM index, INFOTRAC II, required little or no instruction by media specialists, while formal instruction in the use of The Readers Guide to Periodical Literature Ranged from 15 to 180 minutes per class. At the same time, daily logs showed that Readers Guide users required an average of 46 minutes a day of professional help, while INFOTRAC II users needed only 15 minutes a day. When costs of instruction and intervention by media specialists are included, the more expensive CD ROM product becomes highly competitive to the print index. In conclusion, secondary schools that place a high priority on expanding student’s perceptions of how to access information and creating enthusiasm for independent investigations should consider CD ROM databases. In addition, the CD ROM database offers a vehicle for providing computer usage experiences for the entire student body. Careful evaluation should be given to the issues of equitable access, availability of cited sources, library media center management chores and individual school collection development goals when making a Selection.

Garden centers are facing increasing market pressure from big-box retail stores that offer similar products at more competitive prices but lack a quality produce and exceptional service. In order to differentiate themselves from big-box stores, garden centers must build relationships with their customers which can increase marketing reach. Marketing ability and reach is limiting the expansion of Kansas garden centers which spend the majority of their advertising dollars on traditional media. However, social media can be an effective method for not only understanding consumers but also developing profitable relationships with customers. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of stakeholders of metro and non-metro garden centers as they use new media to market their business. Findings indicate garden center stakeholders prefer to use traditional media channels to market to their customers, lack a clear strategy and objectives related to new-media marketing, and are not effectively implementing relationship marketing principles.

Résumé :
Sweden has a high rate of unintended pregnancies (UP) despite being a rather open society regarding sexual health education. New technology provides new possibilities to improve access by providing contraceptive consultations online, but will that lower the rate of UP? Very few studies have been done on the people working with the young women to find out what can be done to improve the quality of the contraceptive counseling. That is why this study involved two midwives practicing at a youth center at an early stage of the design process. Cultural Probes was used as method to better understand what needs midwives experience in their daily work. Three key findings stating the needs of the midwives were knowledge, missed appointments and trust. In addition, a service evaluation was done to investigate when and how midwives and young women interact. Making the contraceptive consultations available online with a digital care provider would make it more accessible for the young women and the results of this study do not contradict that hypothesis. However, availability is not the sole influencing factor on contraceptive usage. This study shows that encouragement for young women to seek general knowledge and information about contraceptives prior to the consultation is an important factor in order to improve the quality of contraceptive counselling.

Olivier, Charleine. « School libraries in former model c high schools – the case of the Framesby high school media centre ». Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/19795.

Résumé :
The study explored the changing role of libraries/media centres at ex-Model C (now Section 21) high schools in the Nelson Mandela Metropole (NMM), focussing on a case study of the Framesby High School (FHS) media centre in Port Elizabeth. Model C schools originated in the 1990s, just before the transition to democratic rule in 1994, when White, or House of Assembly schools were given a choice of three school governing models, namely, fully-private Model A schools, Model B state schools and semi-private Model C schools. Model C schools would receive state subsidies of about 50%, with the balance raised through school fees. A major research purpose was to present a comprehensive description of the current ex- Model C school library context and how these influenced the service orientation and intended core functions of school librarians, such as teaching information literacy, providing academic support and promoting general literacy and reading. The FHS media centre service was further described with an aim of providing functional library/media centre management guidelines, applicable to high school libraries/media centres in similar ex-Model C school situations, or any libraries that could find such guidelines useful. This qualitative FHS media centre case study was based on the FHS media centre manager’s personal observation as participative action researcher and further supported by literature, an interview and questionnaire feedback from FHS educators and respondents from selected NMM ex-Model C high school libraries. By comparing historical and existing national and provincial school library issues, conclusions were reached regarding macro- and micro-school library contexts, for example, the effect of having no national policy, the support roles of school management and governing bodies, the influence of digital media and the position of school librarians. School librarian concerns, including their roles, qualifications, service conditions and professional status, especially within Section 21 schools, were considered with the high school library and librarian’s contribution towards curriculum outcomes and life-long learning. With specific reference to ex-Model C schools, the absence of a library policy also resulted in diverse levels of school management and school governing body recognition of the school library/media centre. This impacted on the school librarian’s role in curriculum support and information literacy teaching as well as the availability of funds, infrastructure and resources. It is recommended that government should address the supply of library facilities, services and posts for school librarians and assistants. Lack of governmental action is maintaining the growing divide between ex-Model C schools and disadvantaged schools, while the lack of school library services also has a negative influence on literacy and pass rates, especially in poorer regions, like the Eastern Cape. In the light of the vast difference between the results of ex-Model C schools and other schools in the Eastern Cape, these schools and their library services could provide a benchmark towards improving educational contexts in the province.

Résumé :
This study of the diffusion and evolution of the 311 innovation in the form of citizen service centers and as a technology cluster has been designed to help identify the catalysts for the spread of government-to-citizen (G2C) technology in local government in order to better position future G2C technology for a more rapid rate of adoption. The 311 non-emergency number was first established in 1996 and had spread to 80 local governments across the United States by 2012. This dissertation examines: what factors contributed to the adoption of 311 in American local governments over 100,000 in population; how did the innovation diffuse and evolve over time; and why did some governments' communications with citizens became more advanced than others? Given the problem of determining causality, a three-part research design was used to examine the topic including a historical narrative, logistic regression model, and case studies from Pittsburgh, Minneapolis and St. Louis. The narrative found that the political forces of the federal government, national organizations, and policy entrepreneurs (Karch, 2007) promoted the 311 innovation to solve different problems and that it evolved beyond its original intent. The logistic regression model found that there was a statistically significant relationship between 311 adoption and the variables of higher population, violent crime rate, and the mayor-council form of government. The case studies revealed that mayors played a strong role in establishing citizen service centers in all three cities while 311 adopter Pittsburgh and non-adopter St. Louis seemed to have more in common in their G2C evolution due to severe budget constraints. With little written about the 311 innovation in academic journals, practitioners and scholars will benefit from understanding the catalysts for the diffusion and evolution of the 311 in order to determine ways to increase the rate of adoption for future G2C communication innovations.

Résumé :
Although Set-top-Boxes(STBs) are widely deployed today to connect a media source to a display (traditionally a television set), the market is changing due to the introduction of Internet Protocol Television, Over-the-Top streaming devices, gaming console, home theater Personal Computer, smart TV, etc. There is an evolving concept of a Home Media Center (HMC). This HMC provides consumers with an integrated home media environment and experience. This thesis explores the transition from STBs to HMCs. The specific questions that this thesis project answers are: What will a future HMC look like? What will its functions be? What interfaces and protocols will it use? Who will make these HMCs?  How can STB vendors evolve to be HMC vendors or will they simply cease to exist?  This thesis project designed and evaluated a hypothetical HMC prototype based upon current technology trends and user expectations. This prototype was used with 68 volunteers to identify and prioritize the most important features that a HMC should provide. Based upon the most important of these features a conceptual HMC prototype is designed to define a HMC product roadmap for 1, 3, and 5 years. This roadmap is used to project the economic impact of HMCs on the current STB industry.  This economic analysis considers Sweden as the target market. This thesis could be used by current STB vendors to define their own company specific roadmaps to support their transition to the future HMC market.

A casualty of the containerization of oceanic commerce, 350 acre Mission Bay in San Francisco, previously a bustling industrial shipping port, has fallen to disuse over the last 20 to 25 years. Within the last five , plans have been finalized to redevelop the area as a new neighborhood, a distinct district such as the Sunset or Nob Hill. With integration and unification stated as their prime directives (at the scale of the block as well as the city), planners have laid out a scheme which includes 7,500 dwelling units and more than four million square feet of office and Research and Development space (relating to the regional high tech/biotech boom), all to be developed within the strict zoning and design gUidelines established by the city. The thesis takes the 'reality' of the site and the 'best intentions' of the planners as a starting point for an exploration of what a Research and Development workplace could be like in this new socially utopic, post-industrial 'future community. ' Rather than blindly accepting a typical scenario where the office is developed as a private, disconnected entity, separated from the neighborhood, 'public' space, and the urbanized landscape of the city, this workplace aggressively pursues such connections by exploiting its adjacent relationships at various scales and through a variety of experiential methods. The program, office space for a growing publishing/media company, has the potential to further these connections by expressing the public nature of its work and work products through its architecture. In addition to these external, contextual concerns, the project demands a clear understanding of the internal organization and flexibility required by a technologically evolving work environment; this investigation is similarly informed by a study of connections, the interior and exterior connections which reinforce the flexibility of spaces in the workplace. In the end, the area defined by the workplace will hopefully become a center for the neighbors, the workers, the community; a place that creates the programmatic and societal overlap that the Mission Bay planners so desperately want to achieve.

In the era of Big Data, online retailers have access to a large amount of data about their customers. This data can include demographic information, shopping carts, transactions and browsing history. In the last decade, online retailers have been leveraging this data to build a personalized shopping experience for their customers with targeted promotions, discounts and personalized item recommendations. More recently, some online retailers started having access to social media data: more accurate demographic and interests information, friends, social interactions, posts and comments on social networks, etc. Social media data allows to understand, not only what customers buy, but also what they like, what they recommend to their friends, and more importantly what is the impact of these recommendations. This work is done in collaboration with an online marketplace in Canada with an embedded social network on its website. We study the impact of incorporating social media data on demand forecasting and we design an optimized and transparent social loyalty program to reward socially active customers and maximize the retailer's revenue. The first chapter of this thesis builds a demand estimation framework in a setting of heterogeneous customers. We want to cluster the customers into categories according to their social characteristics and jointly estimate their future consumption using a distinct logistic demand function for each category. We show that the problem of joint clustering and logistic regression can be formulated as a mixed-integer concave optimization problem that can be solved efficiently even for a large number of customers. We apply our algorithm using the actual online marketplace data and study the impact of clustering and incorporating social features on the performance of the demand forecasting model. In the second chapter of this thesis, we focus on price sensitivity estimation in the context of missing data. We want to incorporate a price component in the demand model built in the previous chapter using recorded transactions. We face the problem of missing data: for the customers who make a purchase we have access to the price they paid, but for customers who visited the website and decided not to make a purchase, we do not observe the price they were offered. The EM (Expectation Maximization) algorithm is a classical approach for estimation with missing data. We propose a non-parametric alternative to the EM algorithm, called NPM (Non-Parametric Maximization). We then show analytically the consistency of our algorithm in two particular settings. With extensive simulations, we show that NPM is a robust and flexible algorithm that converges significantly faster than EM. In the last chapter, we introduce and study a model to incorporate social influence among customers into the demand functions estimated in the previous chapters. We then use this demand model to formulate the retailer' revenue maximization problem. We provide a solution approach using dynamic programming that can deal with general demand functions. We then focus on two special structures of social influence: the nested and VIP models and compare their performance in terms of optimal prices and profit. Finally, we develop qualitative insights on the behavior of optimal price strategies under linear demand and illustrate computationally that these insights still hold for several popular non-linear demand functions.

In our ever changing understandment of city form, the interpretation and realization of space sometimes transcend the notion of time and the physicality of given boundaries. In the city of pastiche, a postindustrial condition has revealed a reading of the city that begins to question our temporal existence ... that we attempt to make a place of discourse, a place to create, contemplate and learn. This thesis proposes that this place be an extension of ourselves, of our city and beyond ... an urban oasis for the freedom of expression. In the advent of the intelligent age the place of pilgrimage becomes the shrine of information. The interface of information and knowledge to the civic arena anticipates a place for equity ... a collective intelligence. It is my intention to explore this dialectic condition in the context of a Center for Inter-Related Media for the city of Boston. The purpose of the Center will be to act as civic informant in the research and discernment of media upon our society. As such the protagonist roles of the artist. the educator, and the correspondent will provide the institution from which such an effort can exist.

Dillon Nature Center has a wide variety of exhibits that teach the public about the natural resources of Kansas. The purpose of my study was to conduct an exploratory study about the effectiveness of two key exhibits in the nature center (Underground Theater and Tornado), as well as evaluate the use of Quick Response Code or QR codes along one of the trails. A visitor survey was used to collect these data over 30 3- hour sampling periods. One hundred and ninety-five visitors were surveyed during the extent of my study. Fifty-four of those who were surveyed went into the Underground Theater exhibit and 47 went into the Tornado exhibit. I concluded that the Underground Theater exhibit was successful in providing useful information to the visitor, whereas the Tornado exhibit provided little useful information to the visitor. Visitors slightly preferred the use of QR codes along the trail even though the actual use was low. This study indicated that the type of exhibit greatly impacts what the visitor takes away from the exhibit. I also showed that it is likely people prefer newer technology to be available at the nature center. These findings provided the management and staff of Dillon Nature Center with information to guide their interpretive-planning efforts.

Immersive media such as virtual reality or 360° content is increasingly present in our society. Virtual reality has attracted the attention of industry and researchers. Its applications for entertainment and audiovisual content creation are endless. Filmmakers are experimenting with different techniques to create immersive stories. This type of content is typically accessed via a head-mounted visual display, within which the viewer is located at the center of the action, with the freedom to look around and explore the scene as desired. However, 360° videos cannot yet be classified as accessible because subtitles are not always available, and solutions are required. This dissertation analyzed the presentation of subtitles in 360° videos from a user-centered perspective. In particular, it evaluated different subtitling strategies in 360° content. Three main goals were established in this dissertation: 1) To identify challenges and subtitling strategies for immersive content; 2) To identify professional subtitlers’ needs for immersive content; and 3) To evaluate different subtitling strategies (related to position and directions) in immersive content (360° videos) among subtitle users (both hearing and with hearing loss), comparing levels of presence and user preferences. To fulfill these goals, one descriptive study and three experimental studies were carried out. The descriptive study included a corpus analysis that illustrated the current subtitle practices in 360° videos by The New York Times and the BBC. Moreover, a focus group was carried out with subtitling users and professional subtitlers to gather feedback about their expectations in regard to subtitling in this new medium. Two main reception studies were also carried out: the first study was developed with 27 professional subtitlers who tested a subtitle editor specifically designed for 360° content, and the second study was carried out with subtitling users (20 hearing and 20 with hearing loss) who stated their preferences and level of immersion in regards to different subtitling presentation modes in 360° videos. This dissertation helps pave the way for future studies regarding subtitling in immersive environments, sheds some light on the possibilities of subtitling 360° content, and provides preliminary guidelines to create subtitles for this type of content.

Combining social media posts with known user locations can lead to unique insights with applications ranging from tracking diffusion of sentiment to earthquake detection. One approach used to determine a user's home location is to examine the timing of their posts, but the precision of existing time-based location predictors is limited to discrimination among time zones. In this thesis, we formulate a general time-based geolocation algorithm that has greater precision, using knowledge of a social media user's real world activities derived from his or her membership in a particular class. Our activity-based model discriminates among locations within a time zone, with city-level accuracy. We also develop methods to solve two related inference tasks. The first method detects when a user travels, allowing us to exclude posts when a user is away from his or her home location. Our other method classifies an account as belonging to a particular user group based on the time series of posts and a known user location. Finally, we test the performance of our geolocation model and related methods using Twitter accounts belonging to Muslims. Using Islamic prayer activity to inform our model, we are able to infer the locations of Muslim accounts. We are also able to accurately determine if an account belongs to a Muslim or non-Muslim using their activity patterns and location. Our work challenges the accepted practices used to protect online privacy by demonstrating that timing of user activity can provide specific location or group membership information.

Neguse, Josef, et Manuel Fernandez. « Hur påverkar olika faktorer prissättningen på produkten Komplett Media Center a20 ? » Thesis, Uppsala University, Department of Business Studies, 2005. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-9094.

påverkar prissättningen under olika tidpunkter i produktlivscykeln.

Résumé :
C-uppsats kandidat 2011 Title: Media – terroristens medhjälpare? Författare: Christoffer Wiklöw Språk: svenska Instution: JMK, Stockholm Universitet   En kvalitativ studie om New York Times språkbruk kring terrorism.

This thesis carries out the analysis of insecurity in Peru caused by young people who commit the crime of homicide, also the current state of juvenile detention centers, what systems they use and what are the methods to achieve reintegration into society, the result obtained from this research will serve to better approach of a juvenile detention center.
