Résumé :
Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the mechanical stability of two methods of fixation for arthrodesis of the hallux metatarsophalangeal joint: a technique using an intramedullary screw and a standard technique using crossed interfragmentary compression screws. Methodology: The metatarsophalangeal joint was mechanically evaluated in cantilever bending using a servohydraulic testing machine. Differences in stiffness and strength parameters between the two techniques were checked for significance (P<0.05) using a paired t-test. Results: Fixation provided by the intramedullary screw was stiffer and stronger than that from crossed compression screws. Conclusions: The stronger and stiffer intramedullary screw technique offers mechanical advantages over the crossed interfragmentary screw technique.

Résumé :
The mechanical deflection of cantilever microbeams is presented as a new technique for testing the mechanical properties of thin films. Single-layer microbeams of Au and SiO2 have been fabricated using conventional silicon micromachining techniques. Typical thickness, width, and length dimensions of the beams are 1.0,20, and 30 μm, respectively. The beams are mechanically deflected by a Nanoindenter, a submicron indentation instrument that continuously monitors load and deflection. Using simple beam theory and the load-deflection data, the Young's moduli and the yield strengths of thin-film materials that comprise the beams are determined. The measured mechanical properties are compared to those obtained by indenting similar thin films supported by their substrate.

Résumé :
Background: The performance outcome model in qualitative technique analysis can determine the mechanical interactions between a performance outcome and the factors that yield such results in sports techniques. Very little attention has been received for badminton forehand shots for such model work, considering the significance of this technical skill as fundamental to play badminton and as important offensive shots. Objective: This study proposes a performance outcome model that associates performance criteria and relevant mechanical variables in the badminton forehand shot technique. Methods: Literature review provided the basis of model development. The Literature research in this paper was conducted in the following databases; PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar Medline, Pedro, and Cinahl. An additional search (including relevant grey literature) was also done on the internet through ResearchGate. Relevant literature research related to the keywords such as biomechanics of badminton, badminton forehand shot, biomechanical analysis, badminton performance, racquet sports, performance indicators, technique analysis and technique models were included and reviewed. Results: The results managed to present a synthesis of the literature review and provided constructive discussions as a basis to propose a performance outcome model that illustrates mechanical interactions that contribute to badminton forehand and shot technique performance. Conclusions: This model manages to find mechanical relationships and allows for a better grasp of understanding the association between performance criteria and mechanics in the badminton forehand shot technique, which is bases on the kinetic chain principle through the body segmental coordination.

Résumé :
The mechanical testing technique for in situ nanoindentation in a transmission electron microscope is described and is shown to provide real-time observations of the mechanisms of plastic deformation that occur during nanoindentation. Here, the importance of this technique was demonstrated on an aluminum thin film deposited on a single-crystalline silicon substrate. Significant results include direct observation of dislocation nucleation, characterization of the dislocation distribution created by indentation, and the observation of indentation-induced grain boundary motion. The observations achieved by this technique provide unique insight into mechanical behavior studied with conventional instrumented nanoindentation techniques and also provide microstructural-level understanding of the mechanics of ultrasmall volumes.

Résumé :
A novel approach for depositing hydroxyapatite (HA) films on titanium substrates by using mechanical alloying (MA) technique has been developed. However, it was shown that one-hour heat treatment at 800°C of such mechanically coated HA layer leads to partial transformation of desired HA phase to beta-tri-calcium phosphate (β-TCP) phase. It appears that the grain boundary and interface defects formed during MA promote this transformation. It was discovered that doping HA by silicon results in hindering this phase transformation process. The Si-doped HA does not show phase transition toβ-TCP or decomposition after heat treatment even at 900°C.

Résumé :
Abstract Response surface method and Derringer’s function approach have been combined together to develop novel structural dynamic model updating technique for a damped mechanical system. Response surface models have been incorporated instead of finite element models, in order to increase computational efficiency of proposed technique. Derringer’s function approach is useful in dealing successfully with multi-objective optimization type model updating problems. Few such undamped techniques have been recently developed for undamped mechanical systems by combining the benefits of response models with Derringer’s function approach. This paper presents the theory and numerical application of a damped updating technique, which is based upon response models and Derringer’s function approach. In this technique, updating process is formulated as an optimization problem, wherein desirability functions are formulated, based on natural frequencies, modal-assurance-criterion values, resonance and anti-resonance points of frequency response functions. Desirability functions are then optimized to evaluate updated elastic parameters in stage one and updated damping constants in stage two of proposed technique. By using this technique, total absolute errors in natural frequencies, modal-assurance-criterion values, elastic parameters and frequency response functions have been reduced to 0.02%, 0.00%, 3.69% and 0.11%, respectively.

Résumé :
The discovery of solid state processing of nanocrystalline and amorphous metals is considered to be a formation of a vital technology because of the potential in applications of these materials. Among the processes which are suitable tailoring advanced materials, mechanical alloying techniques are of special interest since they offer the most flexibility in mixing the constituent elements. To understand structural transformation from crystalline to amorphous states during mechanical alloying, the microstructural information from TEM is essential. This paper presents three different techniques used in preparing mechanically alloyed powder specimens for TEM study.Samples of commercially produced fine-grained (325 mesh) Cu (99.3%) and Zr (99%) powders were weighed to an atomic ratio of 1:1 as starting materials. These powders were mixed together in a steel vial and ball-milled in a SPEX mixer/mill machine. Samples were taken out after 11 hours of mixing when X-ray patterns showed that some amorphization had occurred. To examine the microstructure of these fine powders, three techniques were employed: (1) the suspension of powder particles on holey carbon film, (2) the epoxy-embedding for thin-sectioning technique, and (3) the microtome technique.

A comparative study of six tendon suturing techniques (1. Modified Kessler + simple epitendinous running suture; 2. Modified Kessler + Halsted epitendinous suture; 3. “Six strand” suture; 4. “Interlocking” suture; 5. “Cross stitch” suture; 6. simple epitendinous running suture) was carried out by evaluating strength in relation to the beginning of separation between the tendon stumps, a 3 mm separation and rupture in porcine flexor tendons. The technique most resistant to initial separation was the modified Kessler + Halsted epitendinous suture followed by the “Six strand” suture. The “Six strand” suture was the most resistant to the 3 mm separation and rupture followed by the modified Kessler + Halsted epitendinous suture. Despite the greater resistance to rupture of the “Six strand” technique, we conclude that modified Kessler + Halsted epitendinous suture showed the best overall performance and was easier to use.

Résumé :
Since the cell was discovered by humans, it has been an important research subject for researchers. The mechanical response of cells to external stimuli and the biomechanical response inside cells are of great significance for maintaining the life activities of cells. These biomechanical behaviors have wide applications in the fields of disease research and micromanipulation. In order to study the mechanical behavior of single cells, various cell mechanics models have been proposed. In addition, the measurement technologies of single cells have been greatly developed. These models, combined with experimental techniques, can effectively explain the biomechanical behavior and reaction mechanism of cells. In this review, we first introduce the basic concept and biomechanical background of cells, then summarize the research progress of internal force models and experimental techniques in the field of cell mechanics and discuss the latest mechanical models and experimental methods. We summarize the application directions of cell mechanics and put forward the future perspectives of a cell mechanics model.

Résumé :
Background and Purpose: Mechanical thrombectomy techniques for intracranial medium vessel occlusions (MeVOs) have evolved in recent years, although the optimal approach is still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness and safety of mechanical thrombectomy in MeVOs using mini (0.017 inches microcatheter compatible) stent retrievers combined with low-profile (0.035 inches distal inner diameter) distal aspiration catheters through the blind exchange/mini-pinning (BEMP) technique compared with mini stent retrievers alone. Methods: Retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database of patients treated with the BEMP technique or mini stent retriever alone for intracranial MeVOs from 2017 to 2020 in a comprehensive stroke center. Both groups were compared about baseline characteristics, occlusion site, clinical presentation, clot cause, procedural outcomes (MeVO first-pass and final expanded Thrombolysis in Cerebral Ischemia score, the mini stent retriever used, number of passes with the front-line approach, and need of rescue therapy), safety outcomes (emboli to unwanted territories and hemorrhagic complications), and clinical outcomes at 90 days. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed with potential predictors of vessel recanalization to find independent variables associated with MeVO first-pass expanded Thrombolysis in Cerebral Ischemia 2c/3 recanalization. Results: We reviewed 102 patients/106 MeVOs treated with the BEMP technique (n=56) or mini stent retriever (n=50). There was a higher rate of MeVO first-pass expanded Thrombolysis in Cerebral Ischemia 2c/3 recanalization (57% versus 34%, P =0.017), lower need of rescue therapy (7.1% versus 22%, P =0.028), and lower rate of emboli to new territory (1.8% versus 12%, P =0.035) and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (1.9% versus 12.8%, P =0.038) with the BEMP technique. After multivariable analysis, the sole independent factor associated to MeVO first-pass expanded Thrombolysis in Cerebral Ischemia 2c/3 recanalization was the BEMP technique (odds ratio, 2.72 [95% CI, 1.19–6.22]; P =0.018). Conclusions: In the setting of MeVOs, the BEMP technique may lead to higher rates of the first-pass recanalization and a lower incidence of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage than mini stent retrievers alone.

Résumé :
Metal matrix syntactic foams (MMSF) are advanced cellular materials constituted by a system of a minimum of two phases, in which a dispersion of hollow particles is embedded by a continuous metal matrix. The incorporation of porous fillers favors the development of low-density materials with exceptional behavior for damping vibrations, impacts, and blast effects, shielding acoustic, thermal, and electromagnetic energies. There are three main techniques to produce them: infiltration casting technique (ICT), stir casting technique (SCT), and powder metallurgy technique (P/M). The first two techniques are used for embedding filler into lower melting point metallic matrices than fillers, in contrast to P/M. The present study demonstrates the feasibility of producing MMSF with components of similar melting points by ICT. The fillers were synthesized in-situ with aluminum and a natural foaming agent from wastes of Spanish white marble quarries. These novel aluminum syntactic foams (ASF) were mechanically characterized following the ISO-13314 and exhibited a porosity, plateau stress, and energy absorption capacity of 41%, 37.65 MPa, 8.62 MJ/m3 (at 35% of densification), respectively. These properties are slightly superior to equal porosity LECA ASF, making these novel ASF suitable for the same applications as LECA-ASF.

In practical, there are many factors which affects the measurement result. Noise may play key role. In order to eliminate noise effect on measurement Gaussian filtering algorithm is used. Then canny edge detection technique is used for edge detection, which helps to improve the accuracy of the result. For hole diameter measurement first we have to find out the circular shape and for circle identification we are using Hough transform technique. We are going to calculate the depth of hole by using the elevation by parallax technique. This proposed method is used for specific type of component. But in future this method can be applied for many type of real time application.

Résumé :
Abstract BACKGROUND The goal of mechanical thrombolysis is to re-establish blood flow to a completely occluded artery in patients who fail intravenous thrombolytic therapy or who are outside the therapeutic window. OBJECTIVE We present our single-institution experience with the use of temporary, partial deployment of a self-expanding intracranial stent as a rescue technique for the treatment of acute stroke. The use of the Enterprise stent represents an off-label use of a humanitarian device exemption device. METHODS We performed a retrospective review of a prospective database of acute stroke patients treated with intra-arterial techniques at the Thomas Jefferson University Comprehensive Stroke Center from July 2009 to July 2010. RESULTS Seven patients were included, and we obtained a 100% recanalization rate to Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction grade 2 and 3 with a 28% asymptomatic hemorrhagic transformation. No device-related complications were encountered. CONCLUSION Temporary, partial deployment of a self-expanding intracranial stent as a rescue procedure is feasible, effective, and safe in the setting of endovascular intervention for acute stroke, although our experience is limited. This technique was used only as a rescue procedure when more established procedures failed.

Résumé :
The winding process is encountered frequently in manufacturing, such as winding of polymer films and paper, laminated pressure vessel construction, and the manufacture of wound capacitors. The winding of capacitors will typically involve hundreds of plies of conductor and dielectric wound over a core. Due to the large number of layers, the calculation of the mechanical states within a wound capacitor is a significant computational task. Techniques for calculation of the mechanical states within a wound capacitor are derived and discussed in reference [1]. The focus of this paper is the formulation and application of optimization techniques for the design of wound capacitors. The design criteria to be achieved is a specified uniform wound tension in a capacitor. The paper will formulate an optimization statement of the wound capacitor design problem, develop a technique for reducing the numerical calculation required to repeatedly analyze the capacitor which is required by the optimization algorithm, and apply the technique to an example. The following effects will be investigated using the example. (1) The ability of low order winding tension profiles, such as constant, linear, or bilinear profiles, to meet the optimization objective. (2) The usefulness and practicality of high order winding tension profiles, which require a significant number of design variables to meet the optimization objective. (3) Differential weighting of the aluminum and mylar layer wound tensions in the objective function will be investigated as a technique for achieving the optimization/design goal.

Résumé :
Electro-mechanical impedance method is emerging as an important and powerful technique for structural health monitoring (SHM). Active elements of the technique are Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensor (PWAS) bonded on the structure. Modeling and simulation of PWAS and host structure play an important role in the SHM applications with PWAS. For decades finite element method has been extensively applied in the analysis of piezoelectric materials and structures. In this paper, piezoelectric element and a host metallic structure were modeled using Ansys finite element software to find the Electromechanical Impedance (EMI) according to the signal frequency. After that, the EMI signature of the beam was found for different position of the PWAS patch. The study shows that sensor position may directly control the EMI signature.
