Résumé :
The article study conditions for the passage of wheelsets along turnouts from the point of view of ensuring traffic safety. The norms and tolerances for geometric dimensions in the “wheelset - rail gauge” system are interrelated. Proceeding from this interrelation, an analysis is performed on the probability of occurrence of adverse events in the passage through the turnouts of wheelsets having flanges with different wear values. The thickness of the flanges of the car wheels has a great influence on the safe passage by the rolling stock on the allocated switch point. When wheels is running on allocated point, disorders occurred in track gauge, tongue gapping to the stock rail, and in the case of frequent repetition of these phenomena - even bends and breaks in connecting rods directly threaten the safety of driving on turnouts. Within one article, it is impossible to consider all the features of the movement of rolling stock in turnouts. As an example, conditions for the passage of a wheelset through a frog unit are considered. It can be seen from the materials presented in the article that the current normative base of the geometric dimensions of the “wheelset - rail gauge” system is justified by the result of extensive and comprehensive scientific research. The experience of several decades of operation is confirmed by the fact that this regulatory framework provides for the transportation process and the safety of the movement of trains in turnouts. Introduction of changes in the “wheelset - rail gauge” measuring system should be based on analysis of the actual state of wheel sets and the parameters of the track gauge in turnouts. In particular, in order to determine the possibility of changing the rejection size of the minimum thickness, it is necessary:• to conduct mass measurements of wheelsets and turnouts in operation; to perform processing of the obtained data with the identification of dependencies between different combinations of sizes, including relations between the thickness of the flange and the slope of its generatrix; to perform dynamic-strength tests to determine the dependence of stresses and deformations of the elements of the switches during the passage of wheelsets with different thicknesses and angles of inclination of the flanges; to reveal the available opportunities for changes in the “wheelset - rail gauge” measuring system, taking into account the durability and reliability of switch points; to develop a new methodology for calculating the adverse events that occur during wheelsets passage along the turnouts.

Résumé :
The study aims to develop a measuring circuit to determine the loads acting on the side frame of the bogie from the wheelset when the wagon is moving. The paper reviews and analyzes experimental methods for measuring the vertical and lateral forces acting on the side frame of the bogie from the wheelset when the wagon is moving. Theoretical studies of the stress-strain state of the side frame of a freight wagon bogie were carried out using the finite element method under the action of loads on the axle opening from the wheelset. As a result of theoretical studies by the finite element method, the places for the installation of strain gauges were determined, and a method for processing the received signals was selected. The developed measuring scheme makes it possible to determine the spatial force effect acting on the side frame of the bogie from the wheelset, which makes it possible, without increasing the number of measuring channels in the equipment, to reduce the number of strain gauges for measuring the considered loads while running dynamic tests. In addition, it improves the accuracy of measurements of vertical loads, with the help of which the coefficient of dynamic addition of unsprung parts of the bogie is calculated.

Résumé :
Stochastic track irregularities influence additional dynamic forces developed in the vehicle-track interaction that lead to faster deterioration of track. For economical track maintenance it is important to understand the relationship between the irregularities recorded by conventional track geometry measuring car and the resulting dynamic vehicle responses. This paper focuses on the correlation between lateral and vertical axlebox accelerations and differently processed track geometry parameters based on a real measurement run on straight track. Decolouring of chord-offset measurement results was performed and derivatives of track geometry parameters were calculated for comparison. Those track geometry parameters have been selected which provide the most accurate information about the recorded wheelset accelerations caused by track geometry irregularities, e.g. second order derivative of cross level.

Résumé :
Real-time monitoring of overturning coefficients is very important for ensuring the safety of high-speed trains passing through complex terrain sections under strong wind conditions. In recent years, the phenomenon of “car swaying” that occurs when trains pass through the complex terrain has brought new challenges to ensuring the safety and riding comfort of passengers. In China, more and more high-speed trains are facing strong wind environments when running in complex terrain sections. However, due to the limitation of objective conditions, so far, only a few economical and effective methods of measurement have been developed that are suitable for real-time monitoring of the overturning coefficient of commercial vehicles. Therefore, considering the applicability and universality of such a monitoring method, this study presents a method for measuring the overturning coefficient of trains using the primary suspension system under strong winds. A vehicle test was carried out to verify the accuracy of the method. The results show that after correction, the overturning coefficient obtained from the primary suspension system is generally consistent with the overturning coefficient obtained from the instrumented wheelset. The method of measuring the overturning coefficient of trains in strong wind environments with the primary suspension system is, thus, proven feasible.

Résumé :
The increase in the energy saturation of the new models of tractors "Belarus", as well as the mass of towed trailers and agro-technological tools that are mounted with them, required an increase in the efficiency of the tractor braking system. The purpose of the study is to increase the efficiency of the braking system of the wheeled tractor "Belarus MTZ" by creating wheel brakes for the front axle with minimal changes in its standard design. The developed drum brake with hydraulic drive of the front drive wheels of the tractor "Belarus MTZ-1221" does not require significant changes in the standard design of the front axle of the MTZ tractor and is adaptive to the anti-lock system, which operates on the basis of measurement and analysis of force factors. The design of the developed brake mechanism allows its adaptation to the anti-lock system, which operates on the basis of measuring and analyzing the forces that arise in the contact of the wheels of the front axle of the tractor with the supporting surface. The braking effect of the tractor "Belarus MTZ-1221" is provided by additional use of its coupling weight, which falls on its front axle. A set of design documentation for the drum brake for the front driving wheels of the tractor "Belarus MTZ-1221" was developed. The use of an additional traction weight of the tractor due to the wheel brakes of the wheels of the front axle of the tractor "Belarus MTZ-1221" will increase the efficiency of its braking, as well as increase the competitiveness of wheeled tractors produced by the JSC "Minsk tractor works". Bench tests confirmed the possibility of braking the calculated moments corresponding to the weight load on the front axle of the tractor "Belarus MTZ-1221". Consequently, the developed brake mechanism will ensure effective use of the tractive weight of "Belarus MTZ-1221" tractor.

Résumé :
This study aims at measuring the characteristic parameters of form grinding wheels used for microdrill fluting, whose wheel contours are specially made up of combinations of multiple curves. With the aid of the indirect duplication of wheel contours and by using computer vision, this paper presents a systematic process for the wheel contour measurement. The measuring process includes five sequential steps: the edge detection, the straight line detection, the contour separation, the circular arc fitting, and the circular arc angle evaluation. To test the proposed measuring process, a measuring apparatus was built, and experiments measuring the characteristic parameters of diamond grinding wheels used for microdrill fluting were conducted. It showed that the proposed measuring process was feasible to measure the characteristic parameters of certain form grinding wheels used for microdrill fluting.

Résumé :
Introduction. The development of agricultural production technical support implies the creation of new working tools and machines for soil treatment, and their improvement and research. This process is continuously associated with the use of soil channels and experimental facilities that help to determine the nature of interaction of working elements and wheeled drivers of agricultural machinery, including means of small-scale mechanization, with the soil. The purpose of this study is to provide the rationale for the design of the stand for testing the working elements of tillage units and wheels of transport and technological machines in the agro-industrial complex. Materials and Methods. In order to obtain reliable experimental data on the interaction of wheeled propellers of small-scale mechanization with the soil, the analysis of the basic design of the experimental stand to study the working elements of agricultural machinery was conducted. The requirements for the experimental stand were defined. The experimental-measuring complex “Soil Channel” was developed and manufactured on the basis of production facilities of the Prof. Leshchankin Chair of Mobile Power Tools and Agricultural Machinery of the Institute of Mechanics and Power Engineering of National Research Mordovia State University. Results. The analysis of ensuring the stability of translational motion of the experimental stand movable module is given, the technical solution to ensure the uniformity of its motion is substantiated and the choice of the electromagnetic powder brake type size is made. The kinematic diagram and a prototype of the movable module of the experimental stand for the investigation of the driving wheels of power tillers are developed. Discussion and Conclusion. Improvement of the soil channel design by introducing a removable module into it, will provide tests not only of active, traction and traction-driven working tools of tillage machines, but will also allow studying the nature of interaction of their driving wheels with the soil, carrying out simultaneous control of traction force and slipping. These data can be used for modernization of existing machines and working tools, and for developing new units.

Résumé :
Abstract. During a roller coaster ride, the vehicles and their passengers are exposed to multiple times the acceleration of earth's gravity. The corresponding forces must be transmitted by the wheels to the track and the support structure. To validate the load assumptions of static and fatigue analysis, it is necessary to measure these forces. Currently, it is deemed sufficient to measure only the accelerations, providing a limited view of the whole. This article presents a method to measure the actual forces and moments that act on a wheel. Since the diameters of roller coaster wheels are comparatively small (approx. 200 mm) and the loads high (approx. 30 kN), industrially available multi-axis transducers cannot be used. Therefore, a transducer design based on strain gauges was developed and successfully implemented in a roller coaster vehicle. Due to its scalability, its application is not limited to just roller coaster wheels: it can be used for all types of non-driven wheels as well.

Résumé :
The main goal of this paper is to present novel technologies that can contribute to safety, competitiveness, efficiency and operational reliability of Railway infrastructure through the development of innovative solutions for measuring and monitoring of railway assets based on machine vision. Measuring the transversal position of the wheels on the rail, as well as identification of the defects of the wheel and the rail (such as deformation of rail head edge, lateral wear, worn wheels, cracks in wheel and rail, rolling contact fatigue, corrugation and other irregularities) can increase reliability and lower maintenance costs. Currently, there is a need on the market for the innovative solution, namely the on-board high-speed stereo camera system augmented with a system that projects custom pattern (fringe scanner system) for measuring the transversal position of the wheels on the rail, robust to environmental conditions and waste along the track that can provide reliable measurements of transversal position of the wheels up to 200 km/h. New trends in Precise Industrial 3D Metrology are showing that stereo vision is an absolute must have in modern specialized optical precision measuring systems for the three-dimensional coordinate measurement.

It has been established that this system is necessary to warn of possible threats of explosions or gas poisoning, rescue operations, etc. The developed design of the robotic caterpillar platform is described, the classical scheme of caterpillar wheels is shown and its movements are described. Attention is paid to the position of the drive, because depending on the orientation in the space of the drive, depends on the direction of rotation of its output shaft, and accordingly the direction of movement of tracked tracks. The expediency of using caterpillar platforms for reconnaissance operations is substantiated. All possible angles of deviation of the stabilized platform from zero position are described. The principle of operation of the stabilized platform of the information-measuring system for conducting reconnaissance operations is mathematically described. It is established that the stabilization of the platform is realized with the help of only two linear accelerometers and motors controlled by an on-board digital computer. The block diagram of the stabilized platform of the information-measuring system for carrying out reconnaissance operations is developed and the admissible error of its stabilization in vertical position is defined.

Résumé :
Introduction (problem statement and relevance). Energy efficiency is one of the most important properties of present-day vehicles. Energy efficiency increasing allows reducing the costs for vehicle movement and for cargo and passenger transportation respectively, as well as decreasing harmful environmental impact. Vehicle energy efficiency increasing can be achieved in different ways, including by optimizing the law of control of the power supplied to the running gear in order to decrease energy consumption for motion caused by wheel slipping (spinning). The research objective is to increase the wheeled vehicle energy efficiency by means of optimal control of the power supplied to the running gear.Methodology and research methods. Vehicle driving inevitably consumes energy, part of which ensures tractive or propelling force generation in the driving wheels when overcoming resistance to motion, while other part is spent to transform energy supplied to the running gear and losses for wheel slipping. Thus, a vehicle energy efficiency increase can be reached by optimal control of the power supplied to the running gear. The loss power in the process of vehicle motion when interacting with the environment is used as a target function in solving this optimization problem. Besides decreasing the energy costs or consumption for the motion, the required vehicle traction level shall be ensured in order to ensure the driving speed mode set by the driver. In this regard, when solving the optimization problem the equality-type constraint describing the mentioned condition shall be taken into account. The method of Lagrange multipliers is used to solve the optimization task.Scientific novelty and results. When developing the control law for the power supplied to the running gear, one shall use additional information on interaction of the wheels with the supporting surface. An additional source of information here is the axial force on the wheel axis measured by installation of the force measuring (dynamometrical) wheels that are an integral part of the wheeled vehicle design. The developed control law for the power supplied to the running gear allows ensuring higher energy efficiency of a vehicle, thereby leveling the disadvantages of the known transmission types with a coupled and individual drive: locked, differential and individual distributing tractive effort torques between the wheels in proportion to the actual normal loads.Practical significance. Application of the developed control law for the power supplied to the running gear will allow, using a common transmission control approach, ensuring of high traction properties under various conditions as well as reduction of energy costs for vehicle motion without requiring additional differential lock control, in case of differential interconnections, and will also allow prevention of additional tyre wear or transmission element malfunction when power circulation occurs in case of a locked drive.

Résumé :
During the production of the low-pressure casting aluminumwheel hub, the head face deformation and axial deformation of the casting blank are always happened due to various factors. The casting wheels beyond tolerance are considered as waste products with no need for further machining. Traditionally, the measurement of the deformation is usually static and by handwork, which limits the accuracy and reliability. This paper introduces anon-line automatic measuring system for casting wheels based on laser measuring technology. The configuration of the system and measuring method are presented in detail. Test results showed that the system could meet the measurement requirements: the whole measurement process operated quickly with the total time of 30s; the dimensional accuracy reached 0.02mm while the measurement error of the deformation was within 0.04mm. The system achieves better repeatability and reliability compared to the manual measurement.

Résumé :
This work deals with mechanical properties of rubber that is used as a damping element in modern tram wheels. Tests in simple tension, uniaxial compression, and simple shear were performed. Duration of the experiments varied from minutes to days in order to investigate permanent set and its dependence on previous loading history, especially maximum strain. Apart from measurements using the testing machine, hydraulic vise was used for measuring force at constant strain and an optical distance-measuring system was used for measuring the dimension of specimens in the loading direction after load removal. The aim of the research was to find out whether the final dimensions of specimens are the same as before loading and whether the force after return to zero strain attains zero. This knowledge is essential for reliability analysis of the resilient wheels that use the examined rubber.

Résumé :
Rolling resistance coefficient is one of the basic resistance when moving objects. In case of objects not equipped with a motor-driven wheels and suspension system , such as: wheelchairs, mobile machinery chopper, shelving and warehouse trucks all resistances are overcome by the muscle strength of the operator. Research is carried out to limit this phenomenon, however, there is a lack of methods for measuring this parameter in the real operating conditions of devices with a wheels and suspension system without a drive unit. The article presents an innovative method of measuring the rolling resistance coefficient of objects equipped only with the wheels and suspension system accordant with the patent application P.424484 and the developed device for these tests in accordance with patent application P.424483. Additionally, the paper presents the results of preliminary tests on the measurement of pivoting coefficient of a transport truck loaded with a given mass.

Our poor prediction capability on the sinkage and rolling resistance of wheels originates in the unreliable description of soil properties and the soil-wheel interaction. Some improvements in both have shown that the theoretical calculations may give results comparable with experimental observations. To determine soil properties, the “two wheel measuring method” is suggested. Further improvement possibilities have also been outlined.

Résumé :
An on-board device for bolting to the axlebox of a railway vehicle or locomotive to measure rolling noise close to the wheel surface has been developed by the authors (1, 2). Even though laboratory calibration and test runs have shown that the measured noise data are consistent, there was no way to prove that they were in accordance with the on-ground measured ones. Italian State Railways (FS) have performed tests with different wheelsets to evaluate the efficiency of several noise-reduction solutions; during these tests it was possible to repeat noise measurements on-board, therefore obtaining a sufficient amount of data to calibrate the device and to analyse in detail the behaviour of such wheelsets. Calculated calibration constants prove that on-board measured data can be used with confidence to estimate noise levels at several distances from the track, thereby reducing the necessity of long and expensive on-ground tests to measure environmental noise pollution.

Abstract The introduction of automated (autonomous) wheeled vehicles at the current stage of technology development is accompanied by the absence of mandatory requirements for new components of automotive equipment in the key regulatory legal acts of the states (for the Russian Federation - in the Technical Regulation of the Customs Union 018/2011). For the first time used on wheeled vehicles coordinate-temporal and line-angle measuring instruments, the ranges and measurement errors of both the measured quantities and all external influencing factors in which the measurement results should be obtained have not been established. At the same time, these measurement results will have a direct impact on traffic safety, protection of human life and health, property and environment. The article demonstrates a theoretical example of the use of automated (autonomous) transport, shows the need for testing measuring instruments planned for installation on transportation vehicles in the dynamic ranges of all influencing factors.

Résumé :
Abstract The generalized approaches of mathematical modelling for numerical simulating and processing of measured electrical signals from board sensors installed on wheeled electro-mechanical platforms are developed in this research. The mathematical backgrounds of the developed approaches are elaborated on the basis of especially formulated initial-value problems need to be solved numerically or the identification procedure need to be applied. It is shown that using the Lagrange's formalism and the electro-mechanical analogies for constructing the improved coupled mathematical models both the mechanics and electrics and electronics of the wheeled platforms and the installed board sensors and the measuring electronic transducers allows having the more information if processing of the measured signals will be on the basis of such improved mathematical models. It is considered the particular example of using the proposed approaches dealt with simulating and processing the measured electric signals from the board accelerometer installed on the four wheeled electro-mechanic platform. Due to this example it was shown that using of the improved mathematical models allows the significantly wider possibilities of accelerometer measuring, so that the different parameters can be estimated by means processing the direct accelerometer measures using the corresponded mathematical models. It was shown that, the most difficulties of identification problems for processing the measured signals from the board sensors installed on the wheeled platforms are due to inherent them the mathematical incorrectness according to Hadamard. The effectiveness of using the filtering of the results of processing the measured signals is shown for the considered particular example of the identification problem also.

Résumé :
The scheme of energy transmission from the engine to the wheels of the car is considered. It is indicated that the dynamics of the vehicle when driving in low gears is significantly influenced by the value of the moment of inertia of equivalent masses. For a passenger car, when driving in first gear, the equivalent weight can increase up to 28%. In the literature, inertial masses are determined approximately. The article proposes a simple technique for assessing the moments of inertia of the main parts (wheels, transmission, engine) without disassembling the car. The essence of the method is to measure the deceleration during free run of the car with the vehicle's wheels hanging, and then without the wheels. A system of equations for the power balance of the vehicle run-out in 3rd and 4th gears of the gearbox with open clutch is compiled. When drawing up the equation, it was assumed that with the same engine speed and the same throttle opening, the engine torque would be the same. Formulas are obtained for calculating the moment of inertia of the wheels and the variable part of the transmission, according to which the inertial mass of the engine is calculated without the need to remove it from the machine. The article describes the experimental research methodology applied to the Hyundai i30 car with a working volume of 1.4 liters, manufactured in 2007. In the course of the experiment, the engine speed was measured through the OBD II connector, using the ELM 327 adapter and the ScanMaster-ELM program, the vehicle on-road speed using the Garmin eTrex 30 navigator, and the wheel revolutions were recorded on video. During the experiment, the condition of the tires Nokian Nordman SX 195/65 R15 91H was monitored, for which the residual depth of the tire tread pattern, pressure, moment of inertia were determined (by the bifilar suspension method). Based on the results of the experiment, the developed mathematical model was used to calculate the moment of inertia of the rotating parts of the Hyundai i30 in different gears. The result of the study allows you to establish the actual state of the rotating parts of the car, the knowledge of which increases the accuracy of determining the performance characteristics. The technique can be used to diagnose the conditions of transmission elements and car wheels. The technique does not require the use of complex stands and expensive devices.

Résumé :
This article is an attempt at summarising the current scientific achievements concerning out-of-round (OOR) tram wheels. The gathered research may provide an introduction to the broader analysis of this issue in tram technology. The measuring methodology of out-of-round tram wheels is also described in this article. Appropriate measurements were made on the wheels of selected vehicles operated by municipal tram company in Poznań. The obtained results allowed us to learn the characteristic forms of out-of-round tram wheels, among them, several forms of polygonization (ovalization, triangularization, etc.). Therefore we confirmed the thesis, that the method of fixing tram wheel rims in the lathe has a significant effect on the unevenness of its rolling surface, both when new (just after rolling) and, after some time of use, when even small irregularities become amplified.
