Résumé :
ABSTRACT:In her account of a debate held at Princeton University between herself and Peter Singer, the lawyer and disability rights activist Harriet McBryde Johnson criticizes the ‘terrible purity of Singer's vision’. Although she certainly disagrees with the substance of Singer's arguments concerning disability and infanticide, this remark is best understood as a critique of their form. In this paper, I attempt to make sense of this critique. I argue that Singer's characteristic mode of argument, with its appeal to a universal, neutral point of view, makes it impossible for McBryde Johnson to give voice to her particular experience and thus obscures her humanity. In order to clarify the positive contribution that an appeal to particular experience may make to moral reasoning, I draw a parallel with the transformative effects of the experience of beauty, arguing that McBryde Johnson's writing ought to be regarded as both morally and philosophically instructive.

Résumé :
Our interests have focused on the investigation and development of biosensors that use chemically selective membranes to measure the concentration of specific species in complex media. One fundamental idea is that protein, which can bind selectively to a specific organic or biochemical species, can be incorporated into an ordered lipid or surfactant membrane assembly such that selective binding events lead to changes in the structure of the membrane (transduction) that can be measured quantitatively. The primary advantage of this method of detection is that it is applicable to interactions of enzymes, antibodies, receptors, and lectins, and it may be extended to investigations of DNA/RNA hybridization. This detection method therefore provides a sensitive generic strategy for sensor applications. The central problem to be solved is how the alteration of the structure of a membrane that is caused by binding events of protein or genetic material can give rise to an analytical signal. We have been focusing our efforts in the areas of fluorescence spectroscopy and electrochemical methods. The electrochemical methods rely on detection in changes of the permeability of membranes to ions and provide systems with very low background signal, leading to the possibility of detection of single molecular-binding events. Fluorescent systems operate on the basis that a chemically selective membrane containing a fluorescent indicator can provide an analytical signal caused by the change of the structure of the membrane due to the binding events. Keywords: fluorescence, lipid membrane, electrochemistry, receptor, biosensor.

Résumé :
This paper describes the chemistry presented during the W.A.E. McBryde Medal address given at the 81st Chemistry in Canada Conference held in Whistler. The narrative chronicles our Quest to perform isotopic separations in the solution phase using as our Excalibur, capillary zone electrophoresis. The narrative takes you through the highs of our early success in separating 35Cl- and 37Cl-. This separation was achieved by adjusting the electroosmotic flow to be equal in magnitude but opposite in direction to the chloride mobility. The narrative then takes you through the dark days, when we could not extend the isotopic separations to cationic species or even explain why there was an isotopic effect on mobility. Since those dark days, we have made numerous discoveries that have aided our Quest. Firstly, the development of mixed surfactant wall coating procedures yielded control of the reversed electroosmotic flow. This control enabled us to perform isotopic separations of systems such as 15N-/14N-aniline and 15NH4+/14NH4+. In terms of understanding electrophoretic mobility, we demonstrate the importance of dielectric friction to mobility. Further, the effect of ionic strength in capillary zone electrophoresis is explained using the Pitts treatment, which is analogous to the extended Debye-Hückel equation for ionic activity. So, have we completed our Quest? Read on.Key words: capillary zone electrophoresis, isotopic, electroosmotic flow, mobility modeling, ionic strength.

Résumé :
The paper presents recent advances in solid phase microextraction (SPME). The method utilizes a small fused silica fibre coated with a suitable polymeric stationary phase for analyte extraction from various matrices. The fibre is mounted in a syringe-like holder for protection. SPME has been used for the characterization of polymeric coating properties. Infinite-dilution weight-fraction activity coefficients have been determined for five solutes in two different stationary phases. Their values correlate well with the structure of the analytes and the coating. Other SPME uses include simultaneous determination of 60 pesticides in liquid matrices. A comparison between SPME, liquid extraction, and Soxhlet extraction for the analysis of Atrazine, Simazine, and Metolachlor in well water, as well as Metolachlor in soil samples, produced similar results for all three methods. The solvent-free character of SPME enables its use as sample introduction technique for fast GC analysis. Separations of BTEX in less than 9 s, and of volatile compounds described in EPA method 624 in 2.5 min, are described. SPME has also been used for the analysis of tetraethyllead and Pb(II) in water. Before the analysis, lead is derivatized with sodium tetraethylborate, and the tetraethyllead formed is extracted from sample headspace. Sub-ppb detection limits have been achieved with FID. Finally, SPME has been coupled to HPLC with the use of a specially designed interface. The combination has been tested on samples of polyaromatic hydrocarbons and surfactants in water. Very good precision of retention times and peak areas has been achieved. Key words: solid phase microextraction, coating characterization, pesticide analysis, fast GC, lead and organolead compounds, SPME/HPLC.

Résumé :
The role of RF quadrupoles in modern mass spectrometer and tandem mass spectrometer systems is described. A good deal of the success in the application of tandem quadrupole mass spectrometers and atmospheric pressure ionization mass spectrometers is due to new applications of the RF quadrupole ion guide. Developments that led from the use of very open, "transparent" electrodes in a cryopumped system to the opposite extreme of well-confined RF quadrupoles that operate advantageously at pressures of several mTorr are described. The ion containment properties of RF quadrupoles are remarkably insensitive to the accuracy of the electrode positions. This has allowed the use of novel quadrupole designs in order to provide unique solutions to instrumentational and physical-chemical problems.Key words: quadrupole, focusing, mass spectrometer.

Résumé :
This paper charts the concepts of grip and the bodily auxiliary in Maurice Merleau‐Ponty to consider how they find expression in disability narratives. Arguing against the notion of “maximal grip” that some commentators have used to explicate intentionality in Merleau‐Ponty, I argue that grip in his texts functions instead as a compensatory effort to stave off uncertainty, lack of mastery, and ambiguity. Nearly without exception in Phenomenology of Perception, the mobilization of “grip” is a signal of impending loss, and is offered as a strategy for managing failure rather than as an example of sure‐footed mastery. I read Merleau‐Ponty alongside Mary Felstiner's Out of Joint: A Public and Private Story of Arthritis to explore these other, attenuated dimensions of grip. Finally, the paper turns to Harriet McBryde Johnson's memoir Too Late to Die Young as an example of a way of thinking disabled embodiment otherwise.

Résumé :
A general theme in Australian prehistory is the development of the distinctive social, economic and technological systems observed in recent Aboriginal societies. Research has demonstrated significant change in the Australian archaeological sequence and general trends of such are shared by numerous regions. Most that have been investigated indicate low density occupation during the Pleistocene and early Holocene with significant increases in site numbers, increased artefact discard rates and dissemination of new technologies and artefact types in mid-to-late Holocene times (e.g. Lourandos 1985). On the other hand, each region has a unique prehistory, range of material evidence and research potential. Our knowledge of Holocene developments in aboriginal subsistence systems, for instance, is largely based upon the history of cycad exploitation in the central Queensland Highlands (Beaton 1982), the appearance of seed grindstones in arid and semi-arid zones (Smith 1986) and evidence for increased emphasis on small-bodied animals in N.E. New South Wales and S.E. Queensland (McBryde 1977:233; Morwood 1987:347).

The combination of affinity recognition, capillary electrophoresis (CE), laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), and fluorescence polarization for the ultrasensitive determination of compounds of biological interest is described. Competitive immunoassays using CE–LIF eliminate the need for fluorescently labeling trace analytes of interest and are particularly useful for determination of small molecules, such as cyclosporine, gentamicin, vancomycin, and digoxin. Fluorescence polarization allows for differentiation of the antibody-bound from the unbound small molecules. Noncompetitive affinity CE–LIF assays are shown to be highly effective in the determination of biomarkers for DNA damage and HIV-1 infection. An antibody (or aptamer) is used as a fluorescent probe to bind with a target DNA adduct (or the reverse transcriptase of the HIV-1 virus), with the fluorescent reaction products being separated by CE and detected by LIF. Aptamers are attractive affinity probes for protein analysis because of high affinity, high specificity, and the potential for a wide range of target proteins. Fluorescence polarization provides unique information for studying molecular interactions. Innovative integrations of these technologies will have broad applications ranging from cancer research, to biomedical diagnosis, to pharmaceutical and environmental analyses.Key words: capillary electrophoresis, laser-induced fluorescence, fluorescence polarization, immunoassay, affinity probes, antibodies, aptamers, DNA damage, toxins, therapeutic drugs.

“I was sure it would make a great story, first for telling and then for writing down,” writes harriet MCbryde Johnson, explaining why she accepts an invitation from Peter Singer to a debate at Princeton University (2003). Initially, Johnson, a disability-rights activist and lawyer who has a neuromuscular disease, is unsure how to interact with Singer, whose philosophy of preferential utilitarianism argues that it is ethical to kill babies born with severe disabilities. Johnson first encounters Singer at an event at the College of Charleston, and she looks to the rules of decorum to help her decide how to handle the situation. When she sees Singer talking to friends, she considers leaving before even being introduced to him. “Hereabouts,” however, “the rule is that if you're not prepared to shoot on sight, you have to be prepared to shake hands. I give Singer the three fingers on my right hand that still work. ‘Good afternoon, Mr. Singer. I'm here for Not Dead Yet.‘ I want to think he flinches just a little” (204 [2005]).

Résumé :
Introduction: Floating knee injuries were first described in 1975 by McBryde as concurrent femur and tibial fractures in an ipsilateral limb. They usually occurred in a polytrauma setting and presented with poor functional outcomes with frequent post-operative complications. Management of this injury was based on patient and fracture characteristics and can be done by external fixators, plating, and nailing. Case Report: A 24-year-old female presented with bilateral floating knees. She was operated on for a left femoral fracture with retrograde nailing when she developed tachycardia and underwent external fixation of the remaining fractures. She later developed a fat embolism which was managed accordingly for the same. After adequate stabilization, her right femur and tibia fractures were fixed by intramedullary nailing through a single percutaneous approach along with nailing for the left tibial fracture. She has satisfactory clinical outcomes on follow-up. Conclusion: Bilateral floating knee injuries are extremely rare injuries and should be managed on an emergency basis. Intraoperative and post-operative complications should be anticipated and managed accordingly. Good functional outcomes can be obtained by intramedullary nailing. Keywords: Floating knee, retrograde femoral nailing, and fat embolism.

Résumé :
BACKGROUND: “Floating knee” describes ipsilateral fractures of the femur and tibia, where the knee is disconnected from the rest of the limb. The mechanism is usually a high-energy trauma. Rates of infection, lack of union, stiffness of the knee, excessive blood loss, fat embolism, are relatively high; leading to functional impairment and often unsatisfactory results. Immediate definitive reduction and fixation of fractures by intramedullary nail reduces the incidence of complications. METHODS: A descriptive study was carried out, a case series report of 7 patientes treated by the SIGN Intramedullary Nail (IMN); to establish the functional results, concomitant injuries, complications and advantages of this nail, in our practice. RESULTS: The majority of the patients were male, with a mean age of 26 years. All injuries were caused in traffic accidents, 50% of the fractures were exposed fractures. According to the Blake & McBryde classification, 6 were Type I and one case Type IIa. Functional results were evaluated according to the Karlström and Olerud criteria; excellent and good results were obtained in 85% of cases. All of the fractures healed; one case of superficial infection was described, one patient presented limb shortening <3 cm and minor limitation of the knee motion range. CONCLUSION: The SIGN intramedullary nail, was efficient and versatile for the treatment of floating knee in adults. It had good functional results (85%) and low incidence of complications. KEYWORDS: FLOATING KNEE, FEMUR FRACTURE, TIBIAL FRACTURE, FRACTURE FIXATION, INTRAME-DULLARY.

Résumé :
The Covid-19 pandemic of 2019 was a global public health emergency, resulting in millions of deaths worldwide. The origin of pandemic was in China, where the disease was first reported in 2019 and in 2020, it became a global pandemic. Because of the economic and social effects caused by COVID-19, changes were made to China's economic model. The Chinese government wanted to protect their economy and people from the virus, so they invested a lot of money into combating the pandemic. Economic development is when a country's economy becomes more advanced than other countries. If it has good infrastructure and employment opportunities, it will become richer (McBryde et al., 2020). An economy can advance quickly through technological advancement, education, and increasing demand for goods and services. When China first experienced the pandemic, it had a rich economy and grew quickly. China was rapidly developing in terms of technology, education, and infrastructure. China's economic model took a turn for the worse when the COVID-19 pandemic hit it. The virus spread quickly, causing millions of deaths in China (Dhar, 2020). The Chinese government was forced to invest billions of RMB into research and to treat those affected by the virus. After COVID-19, China's economy fell into a slight recession. This could have been caused by a drop in exports, an increased mortality rate, and the government spending billions on stopping the pandemic. This paper will first give an overview of previous economic models that China used, then it will discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic changed China's economic model, and finally, this paper will look at the impact that COVID-19 had on China's economy.

Résumé :
Abstract Alexander Dam is a hydraulic fill earth dam and the second-highest embankment dam in Hawaii, having been built in 1929–1932 on the south side of the Hawaiian island of Kauai to provide irrigation for McBryde Sugar Company Ltd. It was constructed across Wahiawa Stream mauka (Hawaiian for “stream that comes from the mountains,” literally “toward the mountains”), upstream of Kalaheo, to store 800 million gallons (5 million m3) of water to irrigate sugarcane fields. The embankment dam was intended to have a maximum height of 125 ft (38 m), a crest length of 620 ft (189 m), and a maximum base thickness of 640 ft (195 m). The total design volume was 580,000 yd3 (443,120 m3) and consisted of hydraulic fill sluiced to the dam site and supporting shell material. On March 23, 1930, a 60-ft- (18.3-m) wide section of the core pool suddenly dropped ∼30 ft (9.1 m) and moved downstream, rapidly draining the core pool and enlarging the mass. The embankment was at a height of 95 ft (29 m) and 78 percent complete when the failure occurred. The failure occurred so quickly that it killed six workers and injured two others on the downstream face. The volume of slide debris was ∼275,000 yd3 (210,100 m3). Thirty feet (9.1 m) of the embankment's core stood near vertical after the failure, leading engineers to believe that the materials making up the downstream shell had consolidated sufficiently to inhibit internal drainage. The embankment was rebuilt by emplacing a 40-ft- (12.2-m) high rock buttress across the downstream toe, widening the downstream shell, and installing tile drains to facilitate internal drainage. The retrofitted structure was completed in December 1932 and remains in service some 85 years later.

Résumé :
In this brief article, McBride exhorts his audience to take seriously the pouring out of the Spirit on all flesh as described in Joel 2:28. If the Spirit is in the world, working through humanity, then we need to tap into it to fight the powers of evil that hold us hostage to prejudice and racism. McBride, pastor and activist, calls every Christian to prophesy or perish.

Résumé :
Introduction: The McBride test was created to assess hallux valgus reduction and is also used to assess capsular and lateral soft-tissue tension indicating the need for lateral capsular release after the bone procedure in the first metatarsal bone. The flowcharts for lateral soft-tissue release remain unclear and lack consensus among surgeons. Objective: To propose a modified version of the test for the complementary preoperative assessment of hallux valgus reduction. Methods: We describe a method in which the examiner supinates the first metatarsal head medially to manually correct the pronation of the first metatarsal and then applies varus force to the hallux to test the lateral capsular tension of the metatarsophalangeal joint. Results: A significant reduction in lateral capsular tension was observed in the metatarsal head lifting and rotating maneuver compared with the conventional McBride test. Discussion: Hallux valgus reduction is greater with manual correction of the deformity than with the classic McBride test, most likely because of the resulting rotational bone repositioning and soft-tissue balancing. These changes seem to decrease the lateral tension that limits the correction of the deformity in the metatarsophalangeal angular plane. Conclusion: We believe that this modified version of the McBride test can be used as a more reliable predictor of the need for lateral metatarsophalangeal release after the metatarsal position is corrected through osteotomy or cuneometatarsal arthrodesis.

Résumé :
ABSTRACTIn an influential monograph, The greening of Dublin Castle (1991), Lawrence McBride argued that the Irish administration was in a rapid state of transformation between 1892 and 1922. Broadly speaking, he argued that the Protestant and unionist senior administrators were gradually replaced by Catholic and nationalist civil servants during this period. However, a significant body of evidence suggests that McBride may have overstated the changes taking place in the Irish civil service. Using a prosopographical study of the senior civil servants in Ireland in 1891 and 1911, this article suggests that there was significantly less ‘greening’ than McBride claimed. The British state appears to have regarded Irish-born Catholics as potentially disloyal, and to have implemented a subtle system of ethnic discrimination at the upper levels of the Irish civil service. It is argued that the existence of this glass ceiling provided young educated Catholic professionals with a powerful motive for participation in the Irish revolution (1916–23).
