Résumé :
AbstractThis paper examines the workings of kinship and marriage idioms in transnational political imaginary in the central Mediterranean to challenge current academic reliance on the notion of fraternity as the symbolic building block of both national and global political relations. Since the 1960s, the Sicilian town of Mazara del Vallo and its fishing fleet have become entwined in intensifying interactions with Tunisia and the wider Maghreb. These interactions—specifically the Tunisian-Italian “Fish War” and construction of a trans-Mediterranean natural gas pipeline between North Africa and Europe—rejuvenated the old geopolitical imagination of the Mediterranean and helped produce the central Mediterranean as a spatio-temporal field of political action. Italians and Tunisians perceived each other as related, and staged the trans-Mediterranean infrastructural project as a sort of European-African (cross-cousin) marriage. I begin by examining the tensions between two central kinship idioms—fraternity and cousinage—in current understandings of transnational relations. I then discuss the growing prevalence of a transnational political cosmology of affinity across difference over that of shared descent and sameness that characterize national alignments. I conclude by examining how Tunisians and Sicilians in Mazara today cast each other in roles deriving from segmentary schemes they share, but on the content of which they disagree. By applying concepts associated with kinship and marriage studies to recent Mediterranean history, I show how segmentation, a concept anthropologists abandoned when they crossed the Mediterranean on their way into Europe, can help us understand transnational politics.

Résumé :
The Mazara del Vallo fleet is one of the main fleets of large trawlers in the Mediterranean. Traditionally, the two main fishing strategies adopted by the fleet can be summarized as follows: pesca a fresco (250 m), mainly targeting deep-water shrimp sold frozen. The second fishing strategy has become increasingly important over the last decade. This paper aims to investigate the extent to which the choice of targeting deep-water shrimp impacted the level of technical and scale efficiency for the fleet assessed through an input-oriented data envelopment analysis. The analysis was based on data collected under the Italian National Programme within the European Data Collection Framework, as well as through a focus group discussion with the trawler skippers. The results showed that the pesca a congelato trawlers had the highest average efficiency, with both technical and scale efficiency close to the maximum level. On the basis of information collected during the focus group discussion on the pesca a congelato strategy, technical efficiency was coupled with a lower discard rate and the widespread use of LED lights. The findings were discussed in light of the objective of discard reduction in European fisheries, one of the pillars of the reformed common fishery policy.

Résumé :
Acoustic sequences are commonly observed in many animal taxa. The vast vocal repertoire of common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) also includes sequences of multi-unit rhythmic signals called bray-call which are still poorly documented, both functionally and geographically. This study aimed to (1) describe, classify, and characterize series of bray-call recorded in two sites of the Mediterranean basin (Rome—Tyrrhenian Sea and Mazara del Vallo—Strait of Sicily) and (2) investigate for the existence of possible geographic differences. The acoustic analysis identified 13 different sequence types, only two detected in both study areas. The Sørensen–Dice index revealed a low degree of similarity between the sequence repertoire of the two common bottlenose dolphin sub-populations, with the Tyrrhenian being more diversified and complex than the Sicilian one. The acoustic parameters also showed variability between the study area. Different variants of the main acoustic elements composing the bray-call sequences were detected in the Tyrrhenian Sea only. The Markov-chain model demonstrated that the transition probability between acoustic elements is not uniform, with specific combinations of elements having a higher probability of occurrence. These new findings on common bottlenose dolphin bray-call sequences highlight the structural complexity of these vocalizations and suggest addressing future research on the context of emissions and the possible function(s) of such acoustic arrangements.

Résumé :
INTRODUCTIONThe genus Illex is likely to constitute a large portion of the annual world ommastrephid squid catches (Roper et al, 1984), even though specific official statistics are difficult to obtain. The broad-tail short-fin squid Illex coindetii is a widespread species ranging from the western to the eastern Atlantic (Roper et al., 1984) and east through the whole Mediterranean Sea (Mangold & Boletzky, 1987). Usually a by-catch of important fisheries, it is caught mainly by trawlers. Although its economic value is lower than that of other squid species (i.e. Loligo spp.), in the Sicilian Channel Illex coindetii may represent a valuable resource due to its abundance. In Italian waters, the available statistics (Cingolani et al., 1986) report that 2680 tonnes of ommastrephid squid were landed in 1982 (0.5% of the total landed catch). The main component of these was landed in Sicily (2183 tonnes), a consistently large part of which was no doubt Illex coindetii (Ragonese & Jereb, 1992). The catches came mainly from southern Sicilian waters (Sicilian Channel) where one of the major Mediterranean landing places is in Mazara del Vallo. Large trawlers (up to 200 gross tonnage) usually carry out long fishing trips (15–20 d), and Illex coindetii is caught mainly by those targeting Parapenaeus longirostris and Merluccius merluccius (Jereb & Ragonese, 1991).

Résumé :
Throughout the last decades, more and more attention in academics and practice has been given to ‘social’ topics such as community involvement, active citizenship, commoning processes. Considering this trend, it is possible to notice an abuse of these terms, contributing to the ‘social washing’ and feeding the risk of instrumentalisation. Starting from the analysis of the state of the art and comparing two cases, the paper aims to evaluate the outcomes of neglected sites recycling with socially innovative initiatives. At the centre of the debate are social enterprises, non-profit entities whose ambition is to create social benefits and new economic solutions for a better use of local resources over time. Considering this purpose, the research investigated the European scenario of Southern Italy, characterised by demographic transition and youth migration. The research adopted qualitative, quantitative and comparative methods. The two cases analysed and compared are Periferica of Mazara del Vallo and ExFadda of San Vito dei Normanni. Both are the result of local resources reactivation and youth entrepreneurship policies. These creative centres are managed by social enterprises. Their actions and activities affect the places producing social, economic, cultural and spatial impacts. However, behind these initiatives lies the soft power, a power able to shape people perceptions through culture. The research illustrates the process outcomes and evaluates its positive and negative impacts to the site and its surroundings. In conclusion, the research is conceived as a contribution to the body of knowledge and the basis for future researches and practical models for the socially innovative recycling of disused resources in urban–rural context.

Résumé :
This paper illustrates the botanic heritage of Parche di Bilello, a site located in the municipality of Castelvetrano. The study area hosts several woodland fragments dominated by Olea europaea var. sylvestris, Quercus suber and Quercus ilex, respectively. According to historical data, these nuclei represent the last remnants of an open forestland which covered a much wider coastal area between Mazara del Vallo and Sciacca until the end of Middle Age. Phytosociological relevés were focused on these forest nuclei, probably the most representative of south-western Sicily, which correspond to three habitats included in the 92/43 EEC Directive (9320, 9330 and 9340, respectively) and represent the final stage of three different edaphic series. Wild olive forests probably dominated on sandy calcareous soils, holm oaks prevailed on steep calcareous and N-exposed slopes. In contrast, cork oaks mostly occurred on sandy subacid soils issuing from pedogenetic processes on palaeodunes. Moreover, field surveys allowed to list 331 vascular plant taxa. Among them, Linaria multicaulis subsp. humilis, Orobanche balsensis and Serapias orientalis subsp. siciliensis are new to Trapani Province. Detailed information on the current distribution and the synecology of several plant taxa of high biogeographic and conservation interest is also provided. The study site also hosts one habitat of priority interest (6220, i.e. xerophilous Mediterranean perennial grasslands and annual swards) and two species protected by international laws, i.e. the orchid Ophrys lunulata and the lichen Teloschistes chrysophthalmus. Considering the high value of its natural heritage, this territory deserves the adoption of more effective protection measures. For this reason the authors recommend its inclusion as a new Site of Community Interest within the Sicilian Natura 2000 network.

The shamefaced crab Calappa tuerkayana Pastore, 1995 and the mantis shrimp Parasquilla ferussaci (Roux, 1828) are two crustacean species rarely reported in the Mediterranean Sea. In December 2018, two specimens of C. tuerkayana and one specimen of P. ferussaci were collected on a soft bottom at about 132 and 145 m depth during a trawl survey off Mazara del Vallo harbour (Strait of Sicily). This note reports the northernmost record of C. tuerkayana in the Strait of Sicily and confirms the occurrence of P. ferussaci in the same area. An update of the spatial distribution of these crustacean species in the Mediterranean Sea is also presented.

Résumé :
The Kentish Plover Charadrius alexandrinus is a sensitive species whose national breeding population has been undergoing a sharp decrease, up to 50%, in 2010 compared to the previous decade. Due to the lack of updated data and fragmented knowledge about its current status and distribution in Sicily, a specific and accurate monitoring of this species was carried out during the years 2018 and 2019. About 230 km of coastline and 64 UTM squares 10x10 km were investigated during the breeding seasons, and a total of 205-287 pairs have been estimated for the whole region, distributed in 41 UTM squares (including the island of Favignana). Pairs are mainly concentrated in the complex of “Saline di Trapani and Stagnone di Marsala” and along the sandy coast of Gulf of Gela, with a higher abundance along the southeast coast of the region. Breeding population showed a decrease of 18-28% in number of pairs in comparison to the last estimation of 250-400 pairs reported for the years 2009-2010. After the investigation of 108 km of coastline and 46 UTM squares, the Sicilian wintering population has been estimated at 376- 563 ind., with wintering flocks mainly concentrated in the wetlands of “Mazara del Vallo” and along the coasts of Syracuse and the Gulf of Gela. These updated estimates place Sicily as the second most important Italian region for the wintering of this species, just after Sardinia. For the first time, the data collected have made it possible to draw up qualitative-quantitative maps of C. alexandrinus distribution in Sicily, providing an important instrument for the management and planning of specific conservation actions, which should be based on habitat protection and implementation of appropriate artificial ecological niches.

Résumé :
Ochthebius (Cobalius) biltoni Jäch & Delgado, 2017 is the most recently described species of Italian water beetles of the family Hydraenidae (Jäch & Delgado 2017). Most of the new hydraenid species recently discovered from southern Europe were found in two quite different aquatic habitats, as small streams in mountain areas, and hypersaline coastal habitats. These aquatic ecosystems evidently represent a not still exhausted source of unknown biodiversity in Europe (Jäch 1989, 1997; Audisio et al. 1996, 2010; Trizzino et al. 2011, 2013a, 2013b; Sabatelli et al. 2016; Jäch & Delgado 2017). Ochthebius (Cobalius) biltoni was described on a male collected (2012) along a rocky shore of Cefalù (NW Sicily), and on a few specimens collected in marine rock pools of the SW Sicily (Jäch & Delgado 2017). Several vain attempts were made (2014-2017) to collect again this species at the type locality, suggesting that O. biltoni represents an exceedingly rare and elusive taxon. The present note is aimed to add information on the poorly known biology and taxonomy of this species, basing on material and data collected during recent expeditions to Sicily. Taxonomy. Ochthebius (Cobalius) biltoni represents the smallest (1.4- 1.6 mm long) Mediterranean species of the subgenus Cobalius, and it is also characterized by a series of specific traits (Fig. 1) not evidenced by Jäch & Delgado (2017): the convex posterior portion of elytra, more convex and more abruptly sloping posteriad than in all other Cobalius; the series of large sharp projections along the outer elytral sides; the nearly cylindrical, narrow, and strongly pointed distad last maxillary palpomeres. The male genitalia of this species are not markedly distinguished from other species of Cobalius (Fig. 2 in Jäch & Delgado 2017). The apical lobe is dilated distad, recalling the condition presented by O. (Cobalius) celatus Jäch, 1989. Genetically, Ochthebius (C.) biltoni, recently analyzed by our research team, is confirmed to occupy an isolated position, external to most other known members of its subgenus. An upcoming paper (Sabatelli et al. unp. data) is aimed at summarizing the genetic relationships among Cobalius. Ecology. All specimens of O. biltoni from SW Sicily were found in small (15-40 cm wide) and shallow (2-5 cm depth) marine rockpools with a yellowish- brown bottom layer of Diatoms, placed along wide rocky calcareous platforms surrounding the littoral road between Mazara del Vallo and Sciacca, about 2 m above the sea level (Fig. 2). In the same localities, larger and deeper rock pools resulted to be only inhabited by other widespread sympatric species of Ochthebius. Amog these, O. quadricollis and O. subinteger were collected in company of O. biltoni. Our observations allow us to hypothesize that adults and larvae of this species are present throughout the year, even if they are more active in Autumn and Spring. Conservation. Ochthebius (Cobalius) biltoni is an exceedingly rare taxon, exhibiting selective habitat preferences. Despite the poor available data, it is likely that this species represents a taxon with a small and ecologically fragmented geographic range, and poor connectivity between the different populations. Most marine rock pools areas where the species could potentially be present at least in the past in Sicily have been, and continue to be, exposed to severe anthropogenic pressures, including the increasing impact of coastal urbanization, and the frequent use of marine rock pools as trash wastes by tourists. This species therefore matches most criteria necessary for being considered in the IUCN risk Category EN [IUCN criteria B2 (a,b,c); see IUCN, 2013].
