Résumé :
Any maximal curve X is equipped with an intrinsic embedding π: X → Pr which reveal outstanding properties of the curve. By dealing with the contact divisors of the curve π(X) and tangent lines, in this paper we investigate the first positive element that the Weierstrass semigroup at rational points can have whenever r = 3 and π(X) is contained in a cubic surface.

In this thesis, we study varieties of singular quadrics containing a projective curve and effective divisors in the moduli space of pointed curves defined via various constructions involving quadric hypersurfaces. In Chapter 2, we compute the class of the effective divisor in the moduli space of n-pointed genus g curves, which is defined as the locus of pointed curves such that the projection of the canonical model of the curve from the marked points lies on a quadric hypersurface. Using this class, we show that the moduli spaces of 8-pointed genus 16 and 17 curves are varieties of general type. In Chapter 3, we stratify the space of quadrics that contain a given curve in the projective space, using the ranks of the quadrics. We show, in a certain numerical range, that each stratum has the expected dimension if the curve is general in its Hilbert scheme. By incorporating the datum of the rank of quadrics, a similar construction as the one in Chapter 2 yields new divisors in the moduli space of pointed curves. We compute the class of these divisors and show that the moduli space of 9-pointed genus 15 curves is a variety of general type. In Chapter 4, we present miscellaneous results, which are related with our main work in the previous chapters. Firstly, we consider divisors in the moduli space of genus g curves, which are defined as the failure locus of maximal rank conjecture for hypersurfaces of degree greater than two. We illustrate three examples of such divisors and compute their classes. Secondly, using the classical correspondence between rank 4 quadrics and pencils on curves, we show that the map that associates to a pair of pencils their tensor product in the Picard variety is surjective, when the curve is general and obvious numerical assumptions are satisfied. Finally, we use divisor classes, that are already known in the literature, to show that the moduli space of 10-pointed genus 12 curves is a variety of general type.

We study the rational projective nodal plane curves in the projective plane P2(C) by using the Fermat curve Fn : Xn+Y n+Zn = 0. We deal with the theory of dual curves in the projective plane and a special type of group action of Zn x Zn on the Fermat curve and its dual to construct, for any positive integer n maior ou igual a 3, a rational nodal plane curve of degree equal to n -1. A rational nodal plane curve is a projective rational plane curve (that is, a genus zero curve) that presents as singularities only nodal points, that is, singularities of multiplicity two with distinct tangents. The basic reference is the paper "On Fermat Curves and Maximal Nodal Curves"by Matsuo OKA published in Michigan Math. Journal, v.53. in 2005.

One of the main difficulties in functional data analysis is the extraction of a meaningful common pattern that summarizes the information conveyed by all functions in the sample. The problem of finding a meaningful template function that represents this pattern is considered in Chapter 2 assuming that the functional data lie on an intrinsically low-dimensional smooth manifold with an unknown underlying geometric structure embedding in a high-dimensional space. Under this setting, an approximation of the geodesic distance is developed based on a robust version of the Isomap algorithm. This approximation is used to compute the corresponding empirical Fréchet median function, which provides a robust intrinsic estimator of the template. The Chapter 3 investigates the asymptotic properties of the quantile normalization method by Bolstad, et al. (2003) which is one of the most popular methods to align density curves in microarray data analysis. The properties are proved by considering the method as a particular case of the structural mean curve alignment procedure by Dupuy, Loubes and Maza (2011). However, the method fails in some case of mixtures, and a new methodology to cope with this issue is proposed via the algorithm developed in Chapter 2. Finally, the problem of calibration estimation for the finite population mean of a survey variable under a functional data framework is studied in Chapter 4. The functional calibration sampling weights of the estimator are obtained by matching the calibration estimation problem with the maximum entropy on the mean -MEM- principle. In particular, the calibration estimation is viewed as an infinite-dimensional linear inverse problem following the structure of the MEM approach. A precise theoretical setting is given and the estimation of functional calibration weights assuming, as prior measures, the centered Gaussian and compound Poisson random measures is carried out

Résumé :
This article deals with curve registration, which refers to methods for aligning prominent features in a set of curves by transforming their abscissa variables. It first illustrates the concepts of amplitude and phase variation schematically and with real data before defining the time-warping functions and their functional inverse. It then describes the decomposition of total mean squared variation into separate amplitude and phase components, along with an R2 measure of the proportion of functional variation due to phase in a sample of curves. It also considers landmark registration, novel ways of defining curve features, continuous registration, and methods based on structured models for amplitude and phase variation combined with more statistically oriented fitting methods such as maximum likelihood or Bayesian estimation. The article concludes with a brief survey of software resources for registration.

Résumé :
This article examines the ‘dispute over tangents’ between René Descartes and Pierre de Fermat, which began in 1638, by comparing their methods of constructing tangents. Descartes’s method aims at a universality, whereas Fermat’s method aims at a generality. The article begins with a discussion of Descartes’s method of tangents, which he proposed in 1637 as a way of constructing ‘all the problems of geometry’. It then considers Fermat’s method, in which he introduces a rule for finding a maximum or minimum. It also looks at Descartes’s critiques of Fermat’s method as applied to the ellipse and the hyperbola, and how Fermat arrived at the question of the ‘specific property’ of a curve by constructing the tangents to non-geometric curves.

Résumé :
Employing friction reduction coatings is one of the most effective methods to palliate the fretting damage. However, facing numerous available coatings, how to compare them and select the optimum one for a specific application is still a challenging task. In this paper, based on the investigation of the fretting behaviors of several bonded solid lubricant coatings, an energy approach in terms of “initial maximal dissipated energy density” was suggested to compare the tribological response of coatings. According to test results, the lifetime of each coating under different test parameters can be fitted by one master curve. The definition of this master curve for a given coating may be used for the prediction of the coating lifetime only by knowing the initial energy dissipated in the contact. The comparison of different master curves for different coatings can be employed to help the coating selection.

Résumé :
The paper presents a Relap5 study of the influence of the centrifugal pump characteristics on the dynamic loads on piping system after power failure. Interpolated and experimental pump characteristics are used. The differences between the interpolated and measured pump curves, the general description of Relap5 model and results of calculations in form of selected time curves for rotational speed, volume flow, pressures and dynamic forces are presented and discussed. The analysis of the results shows that the maximal dynamic force on pipe section calculated with experimental pump curves can be up to 6 % higher than respective calculated using interpolated curves. However, it is not possible to determine to what extent the differences are caused by the interpolation itself or caused by the differences in the design of the centrifugal pumps. The latter since it differs more than 50 years between the pumps whose characteristics are used for interpolation and the pumps with corresponding experimental characteristics.

Résumé :
Spatial-frequency channel interactions were investigated within a Crawford masking paradigm. Test stimuli were presented before, during, and after mask onset. Virtually no masking effects were seen when test and mask frequencies differed by a factor of 3. The temporal response characteristics of low-spatial-frequency targets were evidenced by transient peaks in the threshold curve near mask onset, while high-spatial-frequency test stimuli showed sustained response characteristics with elevations throughout mask exposure. When mask and test stimuli were the same frequency, maximal masking was obtained. Masking curves for complex masks composed of two components also showed this elevation, but it was not as robust as that obtained when the target and mask were the same frequency. This suggests that the second component had inhibited the effectiveness of the component in the mask, which was identical to the test spatial frequency. Interactions found among the frequency components occurred only at points of maximal masking. For low-spatial-frequency test stimuli, interactions were found near mask onset and were dependent on mask contrast level. High-spatial-frequency test stimuli showed interactions which were independent of mask contrast throughout mask exposure.

Résumé :
When the liquid jet gas pump was used in gas absorption or jet aeration, there is a characteristic of jet mixing in its inner flow. In order to improve the effect of liquid-gas two phase mixing, an oscillating jet form was put forward and compared with the straight jet form. The oscillating jet was produced by a kind of fluidic element. The range of oscillating frequency was measured by the wall pressure pulsation. Factors which affect the oscillating frequency were analyzed, which mainly considered the change of working pressure and the length of signal pipe. The liquid jet gas pump was vertically installed on test rig, as the model pump’s working performance was experimentally studied. The results showed that the working pressures and the oscillating jet frequencies had great influence on the pump’s performance. When the oscillating frequency of the given model pump was set constant, the approximate linear h∼q performance curves had the close maximal h. When the working pressure was kept constant, the performance curves increased with the oscillating frequencies. As the area ratio of throat to nozzle m increased, the performance curves changed from steep to flat. The pump’s efficiency was low and the causes were analyzed. The study on oscillating liquid jet gas pump’s performance can help to improve the effect of jet mixing in pump and can make the pump to work more efficiently.

Résumé :
The collision mechanisms of spar platform haven’t caused so much attention as that of ships in the past, for the short of this kind of collision accidents reported. But this does not mean the impossibility of the collision accident in the future. The research on external mechanism and internal mechanism for a ship colliding with a spar platform is introduced in this paper. A model test is designed to study the external mechanism. The collision scenario is described as a ship colliding with a spar platform moored in 1500 meters water depth. The specifics of the spar’s motions and the tension forces of the mooring lines are gathered, to find the hydrodynamic characteristics in the collision scenario. It is found that the maximal displacements and the maximal pitch angles of the spar platform, and the maximal tension forces of mooring lines are all linearly proportional to the initial velocity of the striking ship basically. Mooring lines play elastic roles in the collision course. The internal mechanism of the ship colliding with the spar platform is achieved by numerical simulation method and the software used is MSC.DYTRAN. A Truss-Spar is taken as the object and a double hull structural design is adopted in the part of hard tank near water surface. The curves of collision characters and the structural damage are obtained. The crashworthiness of the double hull design is verified, through the numerical simulation results.

Résumé :
Snow is a critical water resource for much of the U.S. and failure to account for changes in climate could deleteriously impact military assets. In this study, we produced historical and future snow trends through modeling at three military sites (in Washington, Colorado, and North Dakota) and the Western U.S. For selected rivers, we performed seasonal trend analysis of discharge extremes. We calculated flood frequency curves and estimated the probability of occurrence of future annual maximum daily rainfall depths. Additionally, we generated intensity-duration-frequency curves (IDF) to find rainfall intensities at several return levels. Generally, our results showed a decreasing trend in historical and future snow duration, rain-on-snow events, and snowmelt runoff. This decreasing trend in snowpack could reduce water resources. A statistically significant increase in maximum streamflow for most rivers at the Washington and North Dakota sites occurred for several months of the year. In Colorado, only a few months indicated such an increase. Future IDF curves for Colorado and North Dakota indicated a slight increase in rainfall intensity whereas the Washington site had about a twofold increase. This increase in rainfall intensity could result in major flood events, demonstrating the importance of accounting for climate changes in infrastructure planning.

Résumé :
COVID-19 has created an unprecedented global health crisis that caused millions of infections and deaths worldwide. Many, however, argue that pre-existing social inequalities have led to inequalities in infection and death rates across social classes, with the most-deprived classes are worst hit. In this paper, we derive semi/non-parametric estimators of Health Concentration Curve (HC) that can quantify inequalities in COVID-19 infections and deaths and help identify the social classes that are most at risk of infection and dying from the virus. We express HC in terms of copula function that we use to build our estimators of HC. For the semi-parametric estimator, a parametric copula is used to model the dependence between health and socio-economic variables. The copula function is estimated using maximum pseudo-likelihood estimator after replacing the cumulative distribution of health variable by its empirical analogue. For the non-parametric estimator, we replace the copula function by a Bernstein copula estimator. Furthermore, we use the above estimators of HC to derive copula-based estimators of health Gini coeffcient. We establish the consistency and the asymptotic normality of HC’s estimators. Using different data-generating processes and sample sizes, a Monte-Carlo simulation exercise shows that the semiparametric estimator outperforms the smoothed nonparametric estimator, and that the latter does better than the empirical estimator in terms of Integrated Mean Squared Error. Finally, we run an extensive empirical study to illustrate the importance of HC’s estimators for investigating inequality in COVID-19 infections and deaths in the U.S. The empirical results show that the inequalities in state’s socio-economic variables like poverty, race/ethnicity, and economic prosperity are behind the observed inequalities in the U.S.’s COVID-19 infections and deaths.

Résumé :
The central theme of this study is to identify strength-stiffness correlations for chemically treated subgrade soils in Indiana. This was done by conducting Unconfined Compression (UC) Tests and Resilient Modulus Tests for soils collected at three different sites—US-31, SR-37, and I-65. At each site, soil samples were obtained from 11 locations at 30 ft spacing. The soils were treated in the laboratory with cement, using the same proportions used for construction, and cured for 7 and 28 days before testing. Results from the UC tests were compared with the resilient modulus results that were available. No direct correlation was found between resilient modulus and UCS parameters for the soils investigated in this study. A brief statistical analysis of the results was conducted, and a simple linear regression model involving the soil characteristics (plasticity index, optimum moisture content and maximum dry density) along with UCS and resilient modulus parameters was proposed.

Résumé :
Cold-recycling treatments are gaining popularity in the United States because of their economic and environmental benefits. Curing is the most critical phase for these treatments. Curing is the process where emulsion breaks and water evaporates, leaving residual binder in the treated material. In this process, the cold-recycled mix gains strength. Sufficient strength is required before opening the cold-treated layer to traffic or placing an overlay. Otherwise, premature failure, related to insufficient strength and trapped moisture, would be expected. However, some challenges arise from the lack of relevant information and specifications to monitor treatment curing. This report presents the outcomes of a research project funded by the Illinois Department for Transportation to investigate the feasibility of using the nondestructive ground-penetrating radar (GPR) for density and moisture content estimation of cold-recycled treatments. Monitoring moisture content is an indicator of curing level; treated layers must meet a threshold of maximum allowable moisture content (2% in Illinois) to be considered sufficiently cured. The methodology followed in this report included GPR numerical simulations and GPR indoor and field tests for data sources. The data were used to correlate moisture content to dielectric properties calculated from GPR measurements. Two models were developed for moisture content estimation: the first is based on numerical simulations and the second is based on electromagnetic mixing theory and called the Al-Qadi-Cao-Abufares (ACA) model. The simulation model had an average error of 0.33% for moisture prediction for five different field projects. The ACA model had an average error of 2% for density prediction and an average root-mean-square error of less than 0.5% for moisture content prediction for both indoor and field tests. The ACA model is presented as part of a developed user-friendly tool that could be used in the future to continuously monitor curing of cold-recycled treatments.

CAPACITY EVALUATION OF EIGHT BOLT EXTENDED ENDPLATE MOMENT CONNECTIONS SUBJECTED TO COLUMN REMOVAL SCENARIO. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, septembre 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2021.17.3.6.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The extended stiffened endplate (8ES) connection is broadly used in the seismic load-resisting parts of steel structures. This connection is prequalified based on the AISC 358 standard, especially for seismic regions. To study this connection’s behaviors, in the event of accidental loss of a column, the finite element model results were verified against the available experimental data. A parametric study using the finite element method was then carried out to investigate these numerical models’ maximum capacity and effective parameters' effect on their maximum capacity in a column loss scenario. This parametric analysis demonstrated that these connections fail at the large displacement due to the catenary action mode at the rib stiffener's vicinity. The carrying capacity, PEEQ, Von-Mises stress, middle column force-displacement, critical bolt axial load, and the beam axial load curves were discussed. Finally, using the Least Square Method (LSM), a formula is presented to determine the displacement at the maximum capacity of these connections. This formula can be used in this study's presented method to determine the maximum load capacity of the 8ES connections in a column loss scenario.

LOW-CYCLE FATIGUE PROPERTIES OF AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL S30408 UNDER LARGE PLASTIC STRAIN AMPLITUDE. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, mars 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2022.18.1.10.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The application of stainless steel materials in civil structures for seismic protection lies in its low-cycle fatigue characteristic. However, the data of existing research are mainly based on the low-cycle fatigue in small strain amplitudes. To this end, we perform low-cycle fatigue testing of Austenitic stainless steel S30408, which has low yield point and good elongation performance, under the cyclic load with a maximum strain amplitude reaching up to 5%, to fill the gap. The stress-strain response characteristics of the stainless steel material under the cyclic load are analyzed; then, the parameters of the strain-fatigue life relationship and the cyclic-plastic constitutive model used for FEA simulation are extracted. Results show that the stainless steel’s stress-strain curve is nonlinear without a yield plateau, thus presenting a high strength yield ratio and ductility. The hysteresis loops of the material are plump with a shuttle shape and are symmetric to the origin, indicating a fine energy dissipation capacity. The skeleton curve under cyclic loading with cyclic hardening can be significantly reflected by the Ramberg Osgood model, which is affected by the strain amplitude and loading history; it is also different from the monotonic tensile skeleton curve. The strain-fatigue life curve fitted by the Baqusin Manson Coffin model can predict the materials’ fatigue life under different strain amplitudes. The mixed hardening model, including isotropic and kinematic hardening, based on the Chaboche model, is able to simulate the cyclic stress-strain relationship. Further, its parameters can provide basic data information for the seismic design of civil structures when Austenitic stainless steel S30408 is used.
