Texte intégralBovine mastitis is the most prevalent and costly disease, affecting dairy farms worldwide. Economic losses associated with mastitis derive mainly from a decrease in milk production and to a lesser extent, from the culling of chronically infected cows, cost of veterinary treatment, and penalties on milk quality. The researches was carried out in 2011 – 2014 at State Laboratory “Pieno Tyrimai”, at the Department of Animal Breeding of the Veterinary Academy of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences and in dairy farm. At the first phase there was investigated „X“ dairy cows herd. And at the second phase there was investigated Lithuanian dairy cow’s herds. In both have been investigated cow’s mastitis pathogens and analyzed cow’s milk structure changes. The biggest part of the cows in tested cows herd was found to be infected with Streptococcus spp. (22.22 proc.) and in Lithuanian dairy cows herds - Streptococcus spp. (23 proc.). The most elevated somatic cells count was determined in tested dairy cows infected with Streptococcus spp. (D group) (3430 ± 305 thousands/ml.). The most decrease milk fats was determined to Staphylococcus spp. and E. coli (3.38 ± 0.08 proc.). The most decreased milk proteins to - S. aureus (3.1 ± 0.01 proc.). And most decreased milk lactose to - Streptococcus spp.4.1 ± 0.2 proc. (p<0.05). The most elevated somatic cells count was determined, in Lithuanian dairy cows herds, infected with Staphylococcus spp. and Enterococcus spp. (3198 ± 255... [to full text]

Texte intégralPurpose: Clinicians commonly recommend the tongue-hold maneuver, also called the Masako, as an exercise to strengthen swallowing muscles. Although this exercise is widely used, limited empirical data support this maneuver as an effective exercise. The goal ofthe present study is to observe, over multiple sessions, the effects ofthe tongue- hold maneuver as a 6-week exercise in subjects with dysphagia. The results ofthis study will help to address whether the tongue-hold maneuver is beneficial and, if so, which muscle groups are strengthened by this exercise. Methods: Five subjects with dysphagia and one healthy adult performed a set oftongue- hold maneuvers 3 times a day, 5 days per week, for 6 weeks. The number o f repetitions per set was individually calculated based on 80% of the maximal repetitions until fatigue. At baseline and 6 weeks, 4 measures were observed: a subject-reported quality-of-life swallowing scale, lingual strength, the amount of residue in the valleculae, and the pressures generated by pharyngeal muscles during a normal swallow. Four healthy adults who did not perform the tongue-hold maneuver were used as controls for the lingual measures, completing the measures of lingual strength at baseline, 3 weeks, and 6 weeks. Results: No overt trends in the subject-reported swallowing scale were noted; after 6 weeks of exercise, about half ranked their swallowing as worse and half ranked their swallowing as better. The treatment group demonstrated a non-significant overall2.3% increase in anteromedian lingual strength and 8.4% increase in posteromedian lingual strength. These changes did not set the treatment group apart from the control group, who demonstrated an increase of3.8% and 6.3% in the anteromedian and posteromedian positions, respectively. Regarding pharyngeal residue, 2 subjects did not show any changes in residue scores. However, the other 3 subjects demonstrated reduced residue in the valleculae with a cracker bolus. Out ofthe 3 subjects who were measured with manometry, 2 demonstrated higher oropharyngeal pressures on normal swallows after 6 weeks of exercise, although great variability was present. These results are limited by the small sample size and heterogeneity of the treatment group, as well as high variability in instrumental measurements. Conclusion: This study investigated the tongue-hold maneuver as an exercise and provides preliminary support for its use, with caution. Specifically, clinicians should be sure to prescribe regimens that fatigue swallowing muscles and push them past normal use. When using the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI) as a tool, clinicians should also keep in mind that a learning effect is likely to occur over the first few trials. This pilot study suggests that clinicians should continue to prescribe the tongue-hold maneuver as an exercise with caution, as some patients may benefit from it while others may not. Further investigation is required.

Texte intégralThe food preservation by natural fermentation is practiced by diverse native communities. The "masato" is product of this process and constitutes important part of the feeding of the population of peruvian amazonia. The mass of yucca, mandioca or cassava (Manihot esculenta, Crantz) used in the preparation of this traditional drink, constitutes the main substrate for the establishment of an environmental mixed microflora, including the lactic acid bacteria which are responsible for the malolactic and lactic fermentation and other properties of industrial interest. The search of new native strains of antimicrobial substances producing lactic bacteria, adapted to the environmental conditions and regional raw materials, is extremely important, to improve the sensorial and sanitary quality of the "masato". In order to detect lactic strains with antimicrobial properties, 11 samples of "masato" coming from Pucallpa - Ucayali were processed, which were seeded in agar Man Rogosa Sharpe (MRS) pH 6,5 and incubated to 30° C by 72 hours in microaerophilic conditions. The morphologic, cultural, biochemical characterization and the antimicrobial activity were made according to Kandler Weiss (1986) and Tagg McGiven, (1971) respectively. Of a total of 81 isolated strains of Lactobacillus, 33 (41%) of Lactobacillus were identified like Lactobacillus plantarum, 13 (16%) like Lactobacillus alimentarius, 12 (15%) like Lactobacillus acidophilus, 9 (11%) like Lactobacillus casei and in smaller percentage like Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus delbrueckii, Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus amylophilus and Lactobacillus coryniformis. In addition, 64 (78.9%) and 17 (21.1%) of Lactobacillus were detected homofermenters and heterofermenters respectively. In all the evaluated samples of "masato", predominated Lactobacillus plantarum, followed of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus alimentarius. Of 8 evaluated antimicrobial substance producing lactic acid bacteria strains, Lactobacillus plantarum M4 was the only producing strain of a antimicrobial substance that is not acid organic nor oxygenated water. In addition, it was shown that the neutralized antimicrobial substance to pH 6.5 has a reduced antimicrobial spectrum and is stable in a wide range of temperature and pH. Also, the strains of Lactobacillus showed a high level of tolerance to concentrations of ethanol added to culture means, being but of 80% of tolerant isolated strains to 10% of ethanol, whereas 6% tolerated concentrations of up to 12% v/v of ethanol. We propose to Lactobacillus plantarum 4M0.2, Lactobacillus plantarum M9.5, Lactobacillus acidophilus M2.9, Lactobacillus alimentarius 5M1.2 like a selection of strains of biotechnological interest, as well as to Lactobacillus plantarum M4, strain of the study with greater antimicrobial spectrum and tolerance until 8% v/v concentration of ethanol added in culture mean.

Texte intégralThis dissertation, which is based on qualitative and humanistic perspectives, aims at contributing with knowledge within the frame of mobility and public spaces, for the purpose of generating guidelines which will allow promoting an urban lifestyle focused on the integration amongst a number of motorized as well as non-motorized public transportation modes. Within the first part of the dissertation, good urban practices are evidenced where the insertion of massive transport systems have benefited mobility as well as favored the quality improvement of public spaces. Therefore, the city has become an urban benchmark. The construction of the conceptual framework allowed validating the proposed research hypothesis: “The impact of the subway system insertion as a good practice for transportation planning is minimized if diversity, accessibility and qualification of its public spaces are not considered, as indicators for mobility planning”. In the city of the Maracaibo municipality, with a population of 1.450,665 inhabitants, and a 2 surface area of 393 Km , it is evidenced increased deterioration of the urban transport system in recent years, as unsatisfied demands have been piling up as a consequence of the limitations, as well as internal and external service circumstances, thus preventing provident and adequate city planning. As a result, mobility becomes unsustainable, as it is intended for automobiles. The insertion of the subway system into the city currently proves to be a scenario which evidences disarticulation between desirable public space intervention policies and development models for means of transport which facilitate mobility. By taking these problems as a starting point, the second part of this research develops a situational diagnose for the Sabaneta Corridor, in which the first line of the Maracaibo subway system (Venezuela) is inserted. A SWOT matrix allows making policies, as well as devising strategies and actions for contributing to mobility planning whilst encouraging, in this manner, both accessible and efficient use patterns. Finally, a proposal is presented for three stations, which summarizes guidelines for “sustainable” urban mobility planning across six vertices: a) reconditioning of the existing urban pedestrian walkways, b) re-organization of the urban road system –cycle lanes-, c) Nodes and intermodal transport units, d) Redevelopment of urban idle spaces into public spaces –two-level connectivity-, e) street furniture, and f) art as an integration element for means of transport.

The process of designing a compensator for a feedback system has no well-defed algorithms that can guarantee success. Experience and innovation are often a designer's best weapons in solving feedback control problems. The only reasonably successful attempt at automating the design of compensators, the Matlab Control System Toolbox, comes from Mathworks. It is an add-on which requires their Matlab program and is costly, system dependent, and difficult to use. My thesis combines different rent electrical engineering approaches at series compensation of linear feedback systems to design a platform independent and very easy-to-use software toolkit called MASCoT. This toolkit allows a designer to quickly visualize and automatically evaluate several solutions to a compensation problem. MASCoT is written in Java and can run on any platform as well as on the web. The software is free to use and distribute and can aid students and others interested in system control and compensation techniques and who wish to evaluate and design their own compensators.

Texte intégralThe main purpose of this research is to measure the degree of compliance with corporate transparency (TC) in a sample of companies in the mass consumption sector of food and beverages in Peru. To do this, we set out as specific objectives; selecting the model that best suits the needs of the sector, adapt the selected model by adding a dimension that allows measuring corporate transparency in the sector, as well as interviews with experts and consumers and obtaining data from the companies in the samples to measure the corporate transparency in the selected sector. The research was developed under a descriptive quantitative approach, with a transversal non-experimental design, which considers primary and secondary sources. Likewise, it took as a population all the private companies of the sector of mass consumption of food that were operating in 2016, and after that, consider as a sample for convenience, the five companies of mass consumption of higher billing. From the results, it was concluded that the companies that are in an advanced stage of corporate transparency are Álicorp and Backus, being Leche Gloria and Lindley those that are in an intermediate stage and Nestlé, which is in a basic. On the other hand, it was identified that the model of Corporate Transparency Index on the Internet (e-ITC) of Spain was the most complete model for presenting elements that respond to the needs of most of the interest groups. In this way, the proposed tool was useful to measure the degree of transparency compliance of each of these companies; nevertheless, from the interviews and surveys, an additional dimension was proposed, focused on the final consumer.

As humans rebuild the world to suit our needs, many of our fellow creatures simply get out of the way-but others try their luck alongside us. Austin, Texas is home to two notable urban wildlife populations. In the early 1980s, one and a half million Mexican Free-tailed Bats moved into a bridge in the center of the city. Though initially greeted with fear and suspicion, they managed to turn their reputation around, thanks to the dedication of bat enthusiast Merlin Tuttle and their own set of helpful characteristics. Their nightly flight is now a popular tourist attraction, and the bats themselves are a beloved part of Austin's culture. Meanwhile, the rare Barton Springs Salamander, which has lived for in the same spring system for millennia, has watched Austin grow up around its home, and has watched its citizens turn that home into a popular recreational swimming area. Now, as the city's growth threatens the salamander and its habitat, environmental activists, academic scientists, and city wildlife managers do their best to save the salamander, and to leverage its rarity to save Barton Springs. The story of each species illuminates the many different ways in which we relate to the animals that live alongside us, and what those relationships say about us-our values, our goals, and how we picture the future.

Texte intégralThe present document aims at developing a strategic plan for the Massive Public Transport sector in Buses in Metropolitan Lima. This plan is the product of a thorough analysis of the external and internal factors of the sector, from which the main opportunities, threats, strengths and weaknesses thereof have been identified. Then, as part of the strategic process, strategies have been formulated and chosen to achieve the long-term objectives and thus, reach the agreed vision. The bus transport system, and in general, the transport system is a critical problem for society affecting the quality of life of people. During the development of this work we will approach main problems such as the plurality of regulatory institutions, the chaotic commission-affiliation model, traffic accidents, traffic jam and environmental pollution. Proposed strategies focus the point of view of the regulatory body and include the implementation of policies to give the transport service the essential public service category, the creation of a single transport authority, the incorporation of the sustainable mobility perspective as an axis of public policies, the creation of comprehensive road management plans, the development of technology integrating the system and facilitating the transfer between travel types, among others. All strategies seek to meet the objectives of reducing travel time, reducing traffic accidents, reducing transportation costs, reducing environmental pollution and increasing the overall satisfaction of public transport services, and thereby achieving the vision of being within the three best cities in Latin America in quality public transport; counting on a modern, comprehensive, fast, safe, accessible, and environmentally friendly bus system; helping the progress of its inhabitants and contributing to the orderly development of the city

Texte intégralLake Masoko (Rungwe Range, Tanzania) provides a continuous sedimentary record of environmental changes during the last 45,000 years. In this work, lipid biomarker content and their carbon isotopic composition (13C) from 10 selected sedimentary intervals allow paleoreconstruction of Lake Masoko since the last glacial period. Phytoplanktonic and bacterial biomarkers show high variability. Ten new structures of di- and mono-cyclic botryococcenes and partially reduced counterparts, triterpenoids specifically produced by Botrycoccus braunii B race, have been described for the first time in a 32 kyr BP interval. Their isotopic composition is highly enriched in 13C probably because of the use of bicarbonate as carbon source. Isotopic composition of n-alkanes shows that, in contrast with other records from tropical Africa, Lake Masoko surroundings are dominated by C3 land plants during the last 32,000 kyr BP. Lake Masoko could have been a refuge for biodiversity during glacial times. On the other hand, lipid biomarker content and their carbon isotopic composition from 18 sediment intervals covering the last 500 years offer a high resolution record for recent paleoenvironmental and anthropic changes. New very long chain C37 to C43 n-alkenes have been described for the first time in Lake Masoko sediments. Insects and other hypothetical producers of such alkenes have been discussed. Phytoplanktonic and bacterial biomarkers show rapid changes in lake ecosystem at decennial scale. Lacustrine productivity clearly increases during the last 500 years. Anthropic pressure on the ecosystem enhances lake productivity since 1940
