ABSTRACT The baboon endogenous retrovirus (BaEV) belongs to a large, widely dispersed interference group that includes the RD114 feline endogenous virus and primate type D retroviruses. Recently, we and another laboratory independently cloned a human receptor for these viruses and identified it as the human sodium-dependent neutral amino acid transporter type 2 (hASCT2). Interestingly, mouse and rat cells are efficiently infected by BaEV but only become susceptible to RD114 and type D retroviruses if the cells are pretreated with tunicamycin, an inhibitor of protein N-linked glycosylation. To investigate this host range difference, we cloned and analyzed NIH Swiss mouse ASCT2 (mASCT2). Surprisingly, mASCT2 did not mediate BaEV infection, which implied that mouse cells might have an alternative receptor for this virus. In addition, elimination of the two N-linked oligosaccharides from mASCT2 by mutagenesis, as substantiated by proteinN-glycosidase F digestions and Western immunoblotting, did not enable it to function as a receptor for RD114 or type D retroviruses. Based on these results, we found that the related ASCT1 transporters of humans and mice are efficient receptors for BaEV but are relatively inactive for RD114 and type D retroviruses. Furthermore, elimination of the two N-linked oligosaccharides from extracellular loop 2 of mASCT1 by mutagenesis enabled it to function as an efficient receptor for RD114 and type D retroviruses. Thus, we infer that the tunicamycin-dependent infection of mouse cells by RD114 and type D retroviruses is caused by deglycosylation of mASCT1, which unmasks previously buried sites for viral interactions. In contrast, BaEV efficiently employs the glycosylated forms of mASCT1 that occur normally in untreated mouse cells.

ABSTRACT A widely dispersed interference group of retroviruses that includes the feline endogenous virus (RD114), baboon endogenous virus (BaEV), human endogenous virus type W (HERV-W), and type D primate retroviruses uses the human Na+-dependent neutral amino acid transporter type 2 (hASCT2; gene name, SLC1A5) as a common cell surface receptor. Although hamster cells are fully resistant to these viruses and murine cells are susceptible only to BaEV and HERV-W pseudotype viruses, these rodent cells both become highly susceptible to all of the viruses after treatment with tunicamycin, an inhibitor of protein N-linked glycosylation. A partial explanation for these results was recently provided by findings that the orthologous murine transporter mASCT2 is inactive as a viral receptor, that a related (ca. 55% identity) murine paralog (mASCT1; gene name, SLC1A4) mediates infections specifically of BaEV and HERV-W, and that N-deglycosylation of mASCT1 activates it as a receptor for all viruses of this interference group. Because the only two N-linked oligosaccharides in mASCT1 occur in the carboxyl-terminal region of extracellular loop 2 (ECL2), it was inferred that this region contributes in an inhibitory manner to infections by RD114 and type D primate viruses. To directly and more thoroughly investigate the receptor active sites, we constructed and analyzed a series of hASCT2/mASCT2 chimeras and site-directed mutants. Our results suggest that a hypervariable sequence of 21 amino acids in the carboxyl-terminal portion of ECL2 plays a critical role in determining the receptor properties of ASCT2 proteins for all viruses in this interference group. In addition, we analyzed the tunicamycin-dependent viral susceptibility of hamster cells. In contrast to mASCT1, which contains two N-linked oligosaccharides that partially restrict viral infections, hamster ASCT1 contains an additional N-linked oligosaccharide clustered close to the others in the carboxyl-terminal region of ECL2. Removal of this N-linked oligosaccharide by mutagenesis enabled hamster ASCT1 to function as a receptor for all viruses of this interference group. These results strongly suggest that combinations of amino acid sequence changes and N-linked oligosaccharides in a critical carboxyl-terminal region of ECL2 control retroviral utilization of both the ASCT1 and ASCT2 receptors.

AbstractAccess to safe drinking water is limited in many isolated areas, such as the Amazon where Indigenous peoples frequently reside. Identifying safe forms of drinking water accepted by the communities could have positive health benefits for Indigenous peoples. Many Amazon Indigenous peoples traditionally prepare and consume a fermented beverage called masato, which is frequently the only form of water consumption. Despite its widespread consumption and evidence of the health benefits of fermentation, masato remains poorly investigated. We partnered with a Shawi Indigenous community in the Peruvian Amazon to conduct participatory photography to research masato preparation, and to characterize key cultural features and to assess the presence of total and fecal coliform bacteria by using a membrane filter technique. Pictures show that masato preparation is a key part of cultural practices and that there are clear gender roles in the preparation process. We found that 100% of communal water sources (26/26) were contaminated with coliform bacteria; by contrast, fewer, 18% of masato samples (2/11), were positive for coliform. This exploratory study suggests that fermented beverages like masato merit further investigation as they represent an Indigenous method to improve water quality in Amazonian communities where water safety cannot be assured.

Darbo tikslas: Išanalizuoti karvių bandos pieno kokybinę sudėtį ir patikslinti trūkinamų karvių profilaktikai taikomų medikamentų poveikį. Darbo uždaviniai: 1. Išanalizuoti karvių bandos pieno kokybinę sudėtį. 2. Tiriamojoje karvių fermoje reagentu CMT ištirti pasirinktų tyrimams karvių tešmens ketvirčius, prieš užtrūkinant ir po apsiveršiavimo praėjus 10dienų . 3. Atlikti bakteriologinius pieno tyrimus, prieš užtrūkinant ir po apsiveršiavimo praėjus 10dienų . 4. Nustatyti preparatų gydomąjį efektyvumą. Mokslinis - tiriamasis darbas buvo atliekamas 2010 – 2013 metais, privačiame ūkyje, Tauragės raj. Tyrimui buvo atrinktos 20 karvių, kurios buvo sugrupuotos į dvi grupes po 10 karvių. Grupėms buvo skirtas skirtingas gydymas, 1 –oji grupė gydyta preparatu „Rilexine 500“, 2 – oji grupė preparatu „OrbeSeal“. Prieš gydymą ir po gydymo buvo stebėtas SLS, pieno baltymų, riebalų, laktozės ir urėjos kiekio kitimas. Taip pat mastito sukėlėjų diagnozavimas, tešmens ketvirčių užkrėstumas. Išanalizavus bandos pieno kokybinę sudėtį, galima teigti, kad pieno kokybiniai rodikliai ima gerėti, po sėkmingo mastito gydymo. Prieš užtrūkinant abiejų grupių karvių teigiamai į CMT testą reagavo 55 % ketvirčių. Po veršiavimosi praėjus 10 dienų, pirmos grupės karvių į CMT teigiamai reagavo tik 10 %, o antros grupės karvių – 37,5 % ketvirčių. Pažeisti dažniau buvo galiniai ketvirčiai, lyginant su priekiniais. Goal of the work: To analyze the qualitative composition of milk in the cow herd and effects of medications used for prevention of the termination of cow lactation. Tasks of the work: 1. To analyse the qualitative composition of milk in the cow herd. 2. Using the CMT reagent in the analysed cow farm, to examine the udder quarters of cows is selected for analysis, before termination of lactation and in 10 days after calving. 3. To perform bacteriological milk tests before termination of lactation and in 10 days after calving. 4. To determine the effectiveness of therapeutic preparations. The research work has been carried out in 2010–2013 in the private farm in Tauragė district. 20 cows were selected as the sample for research, and grouped into two groups of 10 cows. Groups received different treatment, the first group was treated with Rilexine 500, the second group with OrbeSeal preparation. Changes in the SCC, milk protein, fat, lactose and urea content were monitored before and after treatment along with diagnostics of mastitis pathogens and infection of the udder quarters. The analysis of the qualitative composition of the herd milk allows the state that the qualitative milk indicators start to improve after successful treatment of mastitis. Atendendo á crescente utilização de mastros metálicos em diversas áreas cruciais para o desenvolvimento económico e para o bem-estar social, e aos custos para a sociedade associados à falha ou colapso destas estruturas, torna-se essencial assegurar a sua fiabilidade e segurança. Tendo em conta que, neste tipo de estruturas, a acção do vento é preponderante e que o mesmo tem uma natureza aleatória, podendo apenas ser objecto de análise no campo estatístico, a quantificação correcta desta acção é essencial para o cálculo estrutural e, consequentemente, para a segurança da estrutura. Nesse sentido, a acção do vento foi assumida, neste trabalho, como sendo uma variável determinante, pelo que foi dedicado um capítulo à exploração dos conceitos associados ao efeito da mesma em mastros metálicos. Na presente dissertação, foram abordadas metodologias de cálculo para dimensionamento deste tipo de estruturas, quer ao nível da verificação de segurança das secções resistentes, quer ao nível das ligações e das fundações do mastro. Foi ainda introduzida, neste trabalho, uma abordagem prática ao tema, tendo sido a metodologia abordada aplicada a um exemplo concreto de um mastro metálico tubular de 40 metros. Para efeitos do seu dimensionamento, e no que diz respeito às classificações das classes das secções, foram consideradas duas normas distintas (EN 1993-1-1 e EN 50341-1). Tendo em consideração que, para cada norma, correspondem diferentes classes de secção, foram abordados dois métodos no dimensionamento do mastro metálico: um previsto na EN 1993-1-1, para secções de classes 1, 2 e 3, e outro previsto na norma EN 1993-1-6, para secções de classe 4. Para além de uma análise estática apresenta-se, nesta dissertação, uma análise dinâmica com base no espectro de Davenport.

Cukrinis diabetas dažnai yra laikomas civilizacijos liga ir vienas sudėtingiausių klinikinės medicinos uždavinių specialistams, kurie rūpinasi jos gydymu. Tai lėtinė liga, trunkanti visą žmogaus gyvenimą nuo jos nustatymo dienos. Ji siejama su vakarietiškos gyvensenos plitimu: urbanizacija, populiacijos ir jos amžiaus didėjimu, stresais, socialiniais veiksniais, netinkamais mitybos įpročiais, mažu judrumus ir nutukimu. Raktiniai žodžiai : Cukrinis diabetas, masažas, kraujospūdis, gliukozė. Tyrimo objektas – masažo įtaka asmenims sergantiems cukriniu diabetu Tyrimo tikslas – ištirti masažo poveikį asmenims sergantiems cukriniu diabetu Tyrimo uždaviniai – 1) išanalizuoti cukrinio diabeto tipus ir eigą. 2) Apibendrinti masažo poveikį asmenims, sergantiems cukriniu diabetu. 3) Ištirti masažo poveikį kraujospudžiui ir cukraus kiekiui asmenims, sergantiems cukriniu diabetu. Tyrimas atliktas Lietuvos sporto universitete. Tyrime dalyvavo 9 moterys ir 1 vyras sergantys cukriniu diabetu. Išvada: Masažas veikia visas žmogaus funkcijas ir sistemas. Masažo poveikis žmonėms, sergantiems cukriniu diabetu teikia daug naudos, tačiau jie yra labai panašūs į bendrą masažo naudą. Masažas mažina kraujospūdį, skatina cukraus pasisavinimą raumenyse, pagerina insulino kasos aparato funkcijas, didina darbingumą, pagerina kraujo ir limfos apytaką audiniuose. Taip pat masažas mažina cukraus kiekį kraujyje.
Diabetes is often regarded as a disease of civilization and one of the toughest clinical challenges professionals who are taking care of her treatment. It is a chronic disease, lasting for the entire human life from its imposition. It is associated with the spread of Western lifestyles: urbanization, population growth and age, stress and social factors, poor eating habits, obesity, and low mobility. Keywords: Diabetes mellitus, massage, blood presure, glucose. The object of investigation: massage on individuals with diabetes The purpose of investigation: to explore massage on individuals with diabetes The tasks: 1) To analyze the type of diabetes and the course. 2) Summarize massage on individuals with diabetes mellitus. 3) To investigate the effect of massage on blood pressure and sugar level in individuals with diabetes mellitus. The study was conducted at the University of Lithuania sport. The study included nine women and one man with diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: Massage is all human functions and systems. Massage in humans with diabetes provides many benefits, but they are very similar to the overall benefits of massage. Massage lowers blood pressure, stimulates sugar uptake in muscles, improves insulin cash register functions, increases efficiency, improves blood and lymph tissues. Massage also lowers blood sugar levels.

Darbo tikslas buvo nustatyti mastito sukėlėjų paplitimą Lietuvos pieninių galvijų populiacijoje. Įvertinti mastito sukėlėjų paplitimą Lietuvoje veisiamų pieninių galvijų bandose. Ištirti metų laiko įtaką mastitų sukėlėjų pasireiškimui karvių piene. Įvertinti mastitų sukėlėjų paplitimą karvių tešmens ketvirčiuose. Ištirti metų sezono ir mastito sukėlėjų įtaką somatinių ląstelių skaičiui pieno mėginiuose.
The objective of this study was to estimate mastitis pathogens prelavence in Lithuanian dairy cattle population. Evaluate the prevalence of mastitis pathogens in dairy cattle herds in Lithuania. Investigate influence of the season to mastitis pathogens manifestation in cow‘s milk. Evaluate the prevalence of mastitis pathogens in udder quarters. Investigate effect of the season and mastitis pathogens on somatic cell count in milk samples.

Mastitas yra viena iš brangiausių ir dažniausiai pasitaikančių pieno ūkių problemų, kuri aktuali visam pasauliui. Ekonominiai nuostoliai patiriami kiekvieną dieną, dėl pieno kieko sumažėjimo, pieno kokybės suprastėjimo, didelių gydymo kaštų, mastitu sergančių karvių išbrokavimo. Pirmame etape buvo tiriamos „X“ pieninių galvijų bandos karvės; antrame etape - 8 Lietuvos pieninių galvijų ūkių karvės. Buvo nustatyti visų karvių mastito sukėlėjai ir išanalizuoti jų pieno sudėties ir somatinių ląstelių skaičiaus kontrolės duomenys. Pirmame tyrimo etape įvertinus mastito sukėlėjų paplitimą tirtoje pieninių galvijų bandoje nustatyta, kad labiausiai paplitę buvo Streptococcus spp (22,22 proc.) Antrame tyrimo etape tirtose Lietuvos pieninių galvijų bandose labiausiai paplitę mastito sukėlėjai - Streptococcus spp. - 23 proc. Tirtoje karvių bandoje didžiausias somatinių ląstelių skaičius buvo pieno mėginių karvių, kurioms buvo nustatyta Streptococcus spp. (D grupė) sukėlėjas – 3430 ± 305 tūkst./ml. Mažiausias pieno riebumo vidurkis nustatytas Staphylococcus spp. su Escherichia coli 3,38 ± 0,08 proc. Mažiausias baltymingumo vidurkis Staphilococcus aureus 3,1 ± 0,01 proc. Ir mažiausias laktozės vidurkis Streptococcus spp.4,1 ± 0,2 proc. (p<0,05). Tirtose Lietuvos pieninių galvijų bandose didžiausias SLS kiekis nustatytas piene karvių, kurių mėginiuose buvo Staphylococcus spp. su Enterococcus spp - jų vidutinis somatinių ląstelių skaičius buvo 3198 ± 255 tūkst./ml. Bovine mastitis is the most prevalent and costly disease, affecting dairy farms worldwide. Economic losses associated with mastitis derive mainly from a decrease in milk production and to a lesser extent, from the culling of chronically infected cows, cost of veterinary treatment, and penalties on milk quality. The researches was carried out in 2011 – 2014 at State Laboratory “Pieno Tyrimai”, at the Department of Animal Breeding of the Veterinary Academy of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences and in dairy farm. At the first phase there was investigated „X“ dairy cows herd. And at the second phase there was investigated Lithuanian dairy cow’s herds. In both have been investigated cow’s mastitis pathogens and analyzed cow’s milk structure changes. The biggest part of the cows in tested cows herd was found to be infected with Streptococcus spp. (22.22 proc.) and in Lithuanian dairy cows herds - Streptococcus spp. (23 proc.). The most elevated somatic cells count was determined in tested dairy cows infected with Streptococcus spp. (D group) (3430 ± 305 thousands/ml.). The most decrease milk fats was determined to Staphylococcus spp. and E. coli (3.38 ± 0.08 proc.). The most decreased milk proteins to - S. aureus (3.1 ± 0.01 proc.). Išanalizuoti ryšį tarp mikroorganizmų rūšių ir somatinių ląstelių skaičiumi 8. Įvertinti preparatų gydomąjį efektyvumą slaptuoju mastitu sergančioms karvėms; Mokslinis - tiriamasis darbas buvo atliekamas 2012 – 2014 metais Lazdijų raj. esančiame X ūkyje. Šiuo metu ūkyje kiekviena dieną melžiama ~ 500 karvių. X ūkyje melžiamos karvės yra laikomos šaltojo tipo tvarte naudojant palaidą sistemą. Tyrimams buvo atrinktos 62 karvės sergančios subklinikiniu mastitu, kurios suskirstytos į 2 grupes po 31 karvę. Grupėms buvo skirtas skirtingas gydymas, 1 –oji grupė gydyta kombinuotu gydymu- „SYNULOX RTU“ injekcinė suspensija kartu su „SYNULOX LC“ intramaminė suspensija galvijams laktacijos metu, o 2 – jai grupei skirtas paprastas gydymas „SYNULOX LC“ intramaminė suspensija. Currently, ~ 500 of cows are milked every day in this farm. The milch - cows in the farm X are being kept in the cold type of cow - shed applying a loose system. 62 cows with subclinical mastitis were selected for research. 2 groups were formed, each consisting of 31 cow. Special treatments were applied for both groups. A combined treatment was delivered to the Ist group of cows - injection suspension „SYNULOX RTU“ together with Intramammary suspension „SYNULOX LC“ to cattles during lacation period. Abstract Vortex-induced vibration is one of the predominant fundamental concepts for forced oscillation which attracts considerable practical engineering application for energy conversion. In this work, an oscillation of a mast arising as a result of wind force is utilized for energy conversion. The paradigm for energy conversion from vortex-induced vibration in the mast is the bladeless wind turbine. It consists of a rigid mass known as a mast, fixed in the spring of stiffness (k) and allowed to oscillate along the direction of the flow. In this work, four different types of mast have been fabricated and tested. The first is uniform tapered hollow conical mast (MAST1), the cross-section of the second is uniform tapered plus symbol (MAST2), the third is uniform tapered inversed plus symbol (MAST3) and the fourth is uniform tapered simple rectangular cross-section (MAST4). All the masts were fabricated using fiber carbon. The experiments were conducted in a versatile small wind turbine testing facility of Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, Chennai. This test facility contained an open jet wind tunnel with variable frequency drive and other measuring instruments. The vibration sensor was located in the mast where it experienced a large oscillation in a free stream. In this experiment, an increase in wind velocity led to a terrible change in the amplitude of vibration. A vigorous oscillation was experienced in this mast at this critical frequency, when the natural frequency of the mast was synchronized with the frequency of the vortex shedding and the frequency of the oscillation of the mast. The total force in this oscillation was a summation of the body force due to the mass of the mast and vorticity force that is mainly which was the result of the shedding of the vortices. In this work, extensive studies have been carried out for Reynolds number ranging from 2.5 × 105 to 5.0 × 105. The mast length to diameter ratio of 13 was exposed to various speeds of wind and response was measured. The occurrence of the maximum oscillation in a simple rectangular mast was seen where vortex shedding due to the bluff body was large for constant mass and spring stiffness. The frequency of the oscillation at maximum amplitude of the rectangular cross-section mast was equal to the natural frequency, due to vortices shedding at critical velocity. This demonstrated the appropriateness of the simple rectangular cross-section for harnessing the low rated wind energy and its suitability for renewable energy conversion in the small bladeless wind turbine.

Composite materials such as fiberglass have been used in recreational marine craft for over 30 years. Only within the last decade however have composites found applications in mast construction. This application to masts is due to the lighter weight possible by using composites such as carbon fiber/epoxy that have higher stiffness-to-weight ratios than the traditional aluminum and wood mast materials. Composites use in masts has not been without problems however as designers and manufacturers learn the techniques necessary to produce reliable structures. As with any maturing technology, empiric ii developments will eventually result in acceptably reliable structures. This paper uses a reliability-based design criterion to aid composite mast development. The basic approach characterizes the uncertainties and variabilities of mast design (loads, materials, analytical models, etc.) to predict a total uncertainty called "the probability of failure." The total probability of failure is then compared to "acceptable' probabilities of failure generated from existing aluminum mast designs to determine an appropriate factor of safety. This approach takes the guesswork out of factor of safety selection, giving the mast designer an important tool. By using reliability­based methods the influence of each part on the overall probability of failure can be determined. This allows for intelligent selection of design areas to improve that provide the biggest potential gain in reliability, cost or weight, and decreases the likelihood of either an overly­conservative, heavy mast, or an under-designed mast. The paper begins with the causes of mast failure and then presents the impact of load modeling, material properties and structural modeling on predicted mast reliability. An example mast design is used to illustrate the method, with the result that a composite mast can be designed at nearly the same factor of safety as an aluminum mast.

Hobie Cat is one of the most popular sailboat production companies to ever exist, and the Hobie 16 is the most popular boat in the Hobie Cat line-up. The key to Hobie’s success was largely in part to advancements in strong and lightweight materials. This advancement allowed Hobie to achieve record breaking performance in their particular class of boat. The mast of the Hobie 16 is one of the heavier pieces of the craft. The overall mass and center of mass is greatly affected by this component, which begs to question if there may possibly be room for improvement. A sailboat mast is defined as a tall vertical spar, sometimes sectioned, that rises from the keel or deck of a sailing vessel to support the sails and the standing and running rigging. Sailboat masts are long, slender structures. They must be designed to be able to hold the thrust loads that are acting on them from the sails which will differ based on wind conditions. A mast must also be made of a material that will allow it to go through the varying environmental conditions without fatiguing. When designing a sailboat mast a few of the main goals are to have a low center of gravity, be light weight, and also aerodynamically efficient. During this research a Hobie 16 mast design was taken as a baseline design for testing. The current mast on the market weighs between 50–60 lbs. While this is not extremely heavy, the center of gravity is approximately 13.5 feet from the end of the mast. This high center of gravity makes it tough to raise and lower the mast when launching the boat. One important objective in this work is to create a mast that will be easier for the user to raise and lower without sacrificing the structural integrity of the mast. Three masts have been created in solid modeling software, and their performance characteristics have been tested using finite element analysis software ANSYS. Two of the designs are original works, while one is a copy of the original Hobie Cat design. The original design was analyzed, providing baseline data for which to compare the new designs with. In addition to the new designs, all designs have been constructed from three different materials as Aluminum Alloy 6061, Aluminum Alloy 7075 and Acrylic. This allows for comparison of designs and possible new materials. After an in depth analysis of all masts, the recommendation is made that Hobie 16 users would benefit greatly from the use of a tapered mast made of aluminum alloy 7075.

Sandeq is a type of outrigger sailing boat used by Mandar fishermen to catch fish as well as a mode of transportation between islands. Sandeq boat has a mast made of bamboo that is called pattung. Recently, the raw material for the mast is very rare, so it is necessary to find alternative materials with equal quality and strength. In this study, numerical simulations were carried out by modeling masts made of aluminum, fiberglass and bamboo using Finite Element Method (FEM). The workload used is the maximum load of the main sail. The results showed that alternative materials that can replace bamboo are aluminum 6061 (AL 6061) and fiberglass (FRP). By applying the caseload on the Sandeq mast, it is found that the AL 6061 experiences stress with 78 MPa, and FRP experiences stress with 150 MPa. Both of these materials are suitable for use as an alternative material for the Sandeq mast with a safety factor SF ≥ 5.

Background. As negotiations continue in relation to the UK’s departure from the European Union, considerable uncertainty remains around the final structure of any deal and the implications across all policy areas. Maritime issues are of key concern in Scotland and numerous reports and opinions are accumulating, highlighting significant areas of concern, ranging from fisheries to decommissioning, and some potential opportunities. There is a critical need for knowledge and capacity to support and influence the on-going negotiation process, at both the Scottish and UK level. Expertise regarding the broad range of marine research, operations and commerce is in demand to support discussion, promote interests and secure advances where possible. Such discussion must be based on the best available science but taking into account the socio-economic and historical context. The Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland1 (MASTS) is supporting this discussion, providing scientific expertise and promoting the development of emerging policy and progress towards sustainable marine management, during the transition period and for the post-departure UK organisation. This workshop, supported by MASTS, brought government and academia together to consider the legal, governmental and research framework under which Brexit is taking place and to identify priority areas and activities where information can be shared and options considered for enhancing scientific support for the Brexit process. The objectives were to: • Understand current status of Brexit with respect to marine systems and research capacity, including the legislative framework • Identify the priority gaps in knowledge • Develop ways to enhance communication pathways for the best scientific advice required to support the Brexit process.

El Gobierno de México definió el período presidencial 2007-2012 como el sexenio de la infraestructura, adoptando importantes acciones para impulsar su expansión y mejora. Dentro de los sectores que componen la infraestructura, el transporte masivo urbano ha ido ganando importancia ante la creciente demanda de movilidad de la población, su incidencia en las finanzas públicas locales de las ciudades, y su rol clave para impulsar otras políticas de interés nacional (por ejemplo, políticas ambientales, sociales o de desarrollo urbano). Ese conjunto de aspectos hicieron que los proyectos de transporte masivo cobraran relevancia dentro del "sexenio de la infraestructura". Esta Nota pone de manifiesto algunas de las razones que hacen justificable el apoyo del gobierno federal al Programa y la importancia de los criterios en que se basa la selección de los proyectos candidatos a obtener su apoyo.

This study conducted an evaluation of high-mast roadway lighting, which included a review of Illinois Department of Transportation’s high-mast lighting specification and a field experiment. The lighting specification was reviewed for potential cost-saving measures. Recommended changes included the use of an external drive mechanism, a design-by-application mounting ring, and using the industry standard handhole design. The field experiment consisted of two human factors evaluations. In one evaluation, participants were driven along I-57 through five interchanges with various lighting designs and answered questionnaires about the lighting. Results showed that interchanges that were fully lit outperformed partially lit interchanges for perceptions of comfort, safety, and visibility regardless of whether the interchange used conventional lighting or high-mast lighting. When comparing participants’ responses between high-mast lighting at full intensity or at a 50% dim level, there was no change in perceptions of comfort, safety, or visibility. In the second evaluation, radar sensors were placed at key locations at each interchange and the speed behavior of traffic was recorded and analyzed. Speed analysis showed that lighting designs using only high-mast lighting had a potential ±safety benefit via reductions in vehicle speed variation. Comparing high-mast lighting at full intensity and at a 50% dim level, the dimmed lighting resulted in a significant reduction in speed for exiting traffic. Furthermore, dimming improved safe speed behavior on ramp segments while not significantly affecting the speed behavior for vehicles traveling through the interchange. Recommendations based on the results include using full interchange lighting designs, using a single light type (conventional or high mast, but not both), using a lower light level, and dimming lighting during times of low traffic volume.
