Résumé :
This paper aims to demonstrate that beneath the apparently conventional plot of Little Women (1868) lurks a rather progressive concept of marriage. The initial hypothesis is that the role model for the March girls is their unconventional mother, whose ideas they eventually adopt and put into practice. Marmee is an ardent opponent of the marriage of convenience. In her view, the chief prerequisite for choosing a life companion is love. Mrs March’s vision of marriage is seemingly contradictory – she concurrently considers marriage a sacred relation and adopts the position that it should not be the only and ultimate end of a woman’s life. The coveted aim should be self-actualisation, whereas matrimony is an integral and significant, but not absolutely necessary stage of a girl’s blossoming into womanhood. Each of the sisters, in her way and to a certain extent, fulfils her mother’s high expectations. All the sisters but Beth (who dies prematurely) learn how to conquer their greatest flaws and choose husbands who match both their virtues and weaknesses. Contrary to the views of certain critics that the marriage of the March sisters testifies to their conformity and submission, both to society and their husbands, this paper argues that marriage is an important aspect of their maturation. During their development, the sisters realise that they ought to renounce their childish dreams, the so-called “castles in the air” to strike a balance between individualism and the family’s (in particular, their mother’s) expectations. Admittedly, the marriages of Meg, Jo, and Amy do imply a compromise, but compromise, mutual helpfulness, and self-sacrifice are prerequisites necessary for the creation of the proper marital union in the fictional world of Louisa May Alcott. Moreover, this paper argues that concessions are expected not only from the March girls but also from their husbands, who likewise compromise and mature in marriage.

Résumé :
The primary aim of this research is to explore how the female protagonists of the novel, Daughters of Shame by Jasvinder Sanghera resist the patriarchal trend of instrumentalizing women as shameful creatures, marginalizing women and how they struggle to establish their identity. Through the close reading of the text from the perspectives of Materialist feminism, the paper focuses on how the major women characters, along with the writer herself, like Shazia, Fozia Maya, Shabana and Yasmin help each other by giving psychological and physical support to fight against exploitation by men. These characters represent the dominated Pakistani Muslim and Sikh women in the modern city in Derby in particular and the Sikh and Muslim communities in general. The memoir has presented women as the object to be used for convenience, the satisfaction of men, and as unpaid domestic laborers. The chief finding is that the memoir depicts the social reality of how Muslim and Sikh women living in Western countries are compelled to tolerate domestic violence, honor-based crimes, and forceful marriage. It is expected that the article will encourage other researchers to apply materialist feminism in other fictions.

Résumé :
The connection between social change and marriage is of critical concern for nineteenth century English novelists, and the progression of both class shifts and alterations in marriage are discernable through these novelists' respective works. Due to the Industrial Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, England's social hierarchy began to shift allowing for the rise of a middle class; with the professional class's ascension came the decline of the landed gentry. These social changes blurred class boundaries and created an increasing socially mobile society. Additionally, they coincided with changes to marriage framework, as matrimony was moving towards being based on love rather than the traditional socioeconomic foundation. As both class lines and the love-revolution took place around the same time historically, there was a key change in marriage suitability, making cross-class and love-based marriages more of a reality. Jane Austen and Thomas Hardy are two of the most notable authors from the nineteenth century who chronicle this tension between marriage and class in their respective novels. This thesis focuses specifically on Austen's Persuasion and Hardy's Far From the Madding Crowd, arguing that they both visualize a successful marriage that is predicated on both love and socioeconomic status. Their similar image of the sustainable marriage gives value to both the socioeconomic-based and love-based marriages, depicting a realistic conceptualization of marriage.

Résumé :

Background: Recent trends in the world of business notably globalization and advanced technology have had significant effects on most companies irrespective of size and operations. A major consequence of these trends is increasing competition. This has consequently, increased the need for broader and more comprehensive strategies capable of ensuring the long-term survival of companies. One such strategy is strategic alliances. Strategic alliances provide companies with wider access and utilization of resources that they find difficult to acquire.

Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to achieving a better and deeper understanding of global alliances and how they are coordinated. In so doing the research includes the nature of global alliances in general and the Renault-Nissan alliance in particular. The main focus and case study is the Renault-Nissan alliance but, the researchers also examine the reasons for the failure of the alliance between Volvo-Renault to determine what lessons if any, did Renault learn from this alliance and how these lessons has helped the Renault-Nissan alliance.

Findings: The research found that coordination at the operational level of the Alliance was achieved through coordination mechanisms. The coordination mechanisms were responsible for coordinating the resources and activities of both companies at the operational level. These mechanisms are the result of deliberate planning, implementation and monitoring to ensure that they function effectively as required. The research also found that the effectiveness of the mechanisms are greatly aided by factors such as trust, mutual respect, managerial commitment, and learning as well as structures such as the Coordination Bureaus, the Alliance Board and the Alliance Steering Committees. These were consequently labelled ‘facilitators’ of the coordination mechanisms. Finally, It was also found that the role of ‘facilitators’ permeates the entire coordination process. On the basis of these findings and the analysis made thereof, the researchers through analytical generalizations concluded that effective and efficient coordination of resources at the operational level leads to successful strategic alliances, which are achieved through planning, implementation, creation and monitoring of coordination mechanisms.

Résumé :
publisher version
Ukuthwala is traditionally a marriage custom within the amaXhosa culture in South Africa which permits a ‘legal abduction’ of a bride-to-be. Similar customs of ‘bridal abduction’ exist, most notably in Kyrgyzstan, where it is known as ala kachuu. Research into these customs necessitates a more innovative approach to explore the impact of this social phenomenon. In this article the authors mobilise a fictional narrative to offer a backdrop for a comparative assessment of the impact of bridal ‘legal abduction’ and assess its contemporary status and role within a multicultural society which celebrates the rights of the individual while recognising the value and importance of maintaining cultural identity and traditions. Cultural dissonance has always been characteristic of modern and post-modern societies as they strive for a workable shared ethos. However, when customs such as ‘legal abduction’ (Mtuze, 1993:50) continue under the veil of cultural rights, the wider social sensibilities and perspectives can be at odds with the maintenance of such activities where these activities contradict the rights of the individual as enshrined for example in what can be seen as a liberal South African Constitution.

Résumé :
AbstractIn 1946, the foundation of UNESCO as a new international organisation acting in the field of education changed the context of the IBE’s activity fundamentally. Thanks to difficult negotiations—they began before UNESCO was set up thanks to the general secretary Marie Butts—the IBE succeeded in remaining autonomous. It became a specialised institution within UNESCO working exclusively on technical problems from a neutral point of view. It maintained its activities, with an enhanced legitimacy which also allowed it to increase the number of its member states and to approach its ideal of universality.

Résumé :
Increasing costs and security concerns with present fossil energy sources, plus environmental concerns related to CO2 emissions and the emergence of new technologies in the energy and transportation sectors set the stage for a marriage of convenience between coal and nuclear energy. As the price of oil continues to increase and supply becomes increasingly constrained, coal offers a secure domestic alternative to foreign oil as a source of liquid fuels. However, conventional technologies for converting coal to liquid fuels produce large quantities of CO2 that must be released or sequestered. Advanced nuclear technologies, particularly the High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (HTGR), have the potential to produce hydrogen via water splitting; however, the transportation and storage of hydrogen are significant barriers to the “Holy Grail”, the Hydrogen Economy. In a coal/nuclear marriage, the hydrogen and oxygen provided by nuclear energy are joined with coal as a source of carbon to provide liquid fuels with negligible CO2 release from the process. In combination with emerging hybrid vehicles, fuels based on a coal/nuclear marriage promise stable prices, increased domestic security and a reduction in CO2 emissions without the need to completely replace our transportation fuels infrastructure. The intent of this paper is to outline the technical basis for the above points and to show that process energy applications of nuclear energy can provide the basis for answering some of the tougher questions related to energy and the environment.

Résumé :
Many polymers are known to vary their shape or size when subjected to electric, chemical, pneumatic, optical, or magnetic field. Electrical excitation is one of the most attractive methods for causing elastic deformation. The convenience and practicality of electrical stimulation and the recent advances in electroactive polymers (EAP) make them the most preferred among the responsive polymers. An added benefit of some of the EAP materials is their having the reverse effect of converting mechanical strain to electrical signal making them useful for sensors and energy harvesting mechanisms. To bring these materials to use in daily use products will necessitate finding niche that addresses critical needs. One of the main applications that are being considered for biologically inspired capabilities, also known as biomimetics, which were previously imaginable only in science fiction concepts. Some of the applications that are considered include Refreshable Braille Display, Robotic Fish, Fish-like Blimp, Humanlike Robots and many others. In the paper, the latest development in EAP materials and their applications will be reviewed and discussed.
