Résumé :
AbstractThis article traces the trajectory of theory and praxis around nocività or noxiousness – i.e., health damage and environmental degradation – drawn by the workerist group rooted in the petrochemical complex of Porto Marghera, Venice. While Porto Maghera was an important setting for the early activism of influential theorists such as the post-workerist Antonio Negri and the autonomist feminist Mariarosa Dalla Costa, the theories produced by the workers themselves have been largely forgotten. Yet, this experience was remarkable because it involved workers employed by polluting industries denouncing in words and actions the environmental degradation caused by their companies from as early as 1968, when the workerists had a determining influence in the local factories. The Porto Marghera struggles against noxiousness contradict the widespread belief that what is today known as working-class environmentalism did not have much significance in the labour unrest of Italy’s Long 1968. The Porto Marghera group’s original contribution was based on the thesis of the inherent noxiousness of capitalist work and an antagonistic-transformative approach to capitalist technology. This led to the proposal of a counterpower able to determine “what, how, and how much to produce” on the basis of common needs encompassing the environment, pointing to the utopian prospect of struggling for a different, anti-capitalist technology, compatible with the sustainable reproduction of life on the planet.

Résumé :
Purpose This paper aims to provide a comprehensive vision of the formation of intra-metropolitan clusters triggered by the deindustrialization of an urban area, namely, the district of Porto Marghera in the metropolitan area of Venice and propose possible regeneration scenarios based on intra-metropolitan clustering. Design/methodology/approach This paper adopts a multi-disciplinary approach and relies on both descriptive and qualitative evidence to show the economic transition occurred in the area of Porto Marghera in recent years. Findings Evidence shows the rise of two potential clusters in the KIBS and the creative industries in a well-delimited fringe area placed at the boundary between the urban centre and the core of the deindustrialized zone. Such clustering processes have been, however, characterized by two different and in some way alternative paths. The former stems from the combination of two autonomous entrepreneurial ideas that complemented one to each other. The latter relies on university-industry collaboration and on the presence of places of informal exchanges that proved to support personal networking, knowledge exchange and business opportunities. Research limitations/implications This paper suggests that local development policies could leverage on the presence of social entrepreneurs to substitute the creation of amenities and the provision of public goods in fragile territories. Originality/value This paper shows that, in presence of specific spatial conditions, deindustrialization can stimulate the formation of new intra-metropolitan through both top-down and bottom-up agglomeration process.

Résumé :
This paper deals with the case of one of the most important industrial application of membrane technology in the world: the upgrading of the main industrial wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of the petrochemical site of Porto Marghera, Northern Italy, completed on December 2005 and tested on September 2006. It describes the principal interventions of the plant upgrading and it discusses the removal obtained during the test periods for conventional pollutants as well as for micropollutants. The plant upgrading consisted of a series of improvements of the existing industrial WWTP, in order to increase the removal efficiency of the total suspended solids and the associate removal of ten micropollutant compounds, the so called forbidden substances. The most important intervention was the conversion of the existing activated sludge section into a membrane biological reactor, in order to guarantee adherence to the severe limits imposed by the special law issued to protect the Venice Lagoon, with particular reference to the mentioned 10 forbidden compounds. The experimental results and the numerous test-runs conducted confirmed the respect of the legal limits for the pollutants in the final effluent as well of the required removal rates for the different parameters. Therefore, the upgraded treatment plant was declared agreeing with the approved design.

Résumé :
Public innovation is a peculiar form of innovation that provides new policies, new products, new services, and new infrastructures to increase public value. Many barriers can prevent this kind of innovation, so it cannot be taken for granted. Consequently, it is important to understand the conditions that can produce it. The present article is a case study on SIMAGE, a collaborative public innovation that has no equivalent in Europe and was developed in the Italian petrochemical site of Porto Marghera (in the municipality of Venice) for industrial risk prevention and crisis management. Based on sociological research conducted with qualitative techniques, I aim at accounting for the genesis and development of the process that led the public and the private sector to build jointly an effective public innovation through collaboration. The conclusion focuses on innovation processes, on the production of public goods by the public and the private sector, and on risk and crisis governance.

Résumé :
The Venice Lagoon is subjected to long-range transport of contaminants via aerosol from the near Po Valley. Moreover, it is an area with significant local anthropogenic emissions due to the industrial area of Porto Marghera, the urban centres, and the glass factories and with emissions by ships traffic within the Lagoon. Furthermore, since 2005, the Lagoon has also been affected by the construction of the MOSE (Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico—Electromechanical Experimental Module) mobile dams, as a barrier against the high tide. This work presents and discusses the results from chemical analyses of bulk depositions, carried out in different sites of the Venice Lagoon. Fluxes of pollutants were also statistically analysed on PCA with the aim of investigating the spatial variability of depositions and their correlation with precipitations. Fluxes of inorganic pollutants depend differently on precipitations, while organic compounds show a more seasonal trend. The statistical analysis showed that the site in the northern Lagoon has lower and almost homogeneous fluxes of pollutants, while the other sites registered more variable concentrations. The study also provided important information about the annual trend of pollutants and their evolution over a period of about five years, from 2005 to 2010.

Résumé :
“Music City Mall” is a building with an area of 11,693 square meters providing space for music production as well as a meeting place with dance room, bar, fitness centre and a 1500 seats theatre. The building is the first example in Marghera, Italy, of refurbishment of an abandoned factory obtained by wrapping the existing concrete skeleton with a skin of thin glass and covering it with a bright canopy resembling a pumping core of music and colours. The existing structure is made of large concrete arches that do not have necessary resistance against seismic actions. The seismic retrofit consisted of strengthening and increasing the ductility of concrete sections with PBO-FRCM (Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Matrix). FRCM differs from FRP reinforcement systems in that the epoxy resin is replaced with a special stabilized cement matrix. Experimental evidence has shown that PBO-FRCM system has the same mechanical performance of traditional unidirectional carbon FRP. Furthermore, experimental data and those obtained from their elaboration show that FRCM reinforcement has some advantages with respect to the traditional FRP. In particular, FRCM is compatible with the substrate to be reinforced (surface porosity of substrate where system is applied remains unvaried), and durability, especially with respect to temperature and relative humidity, is guaranteed.

Résumé :
Transitional water systems (TWSs) may be threatened by various metals originating from increased agricultural, industrial activities, or urban effluents. Macroalgae are one of the biological quality elements used to monitor and assess the health status of TWS due to their structural and functional key role in marine ecosystems. Here, metal accumulation from the macroalgae Ulva laetevirens Areschoug (1854) and oxidative stress by lipid peroxidation (LPO) biomarker were investigated during four sampling seasons from three sampling sites (SMM: Santa Maria del Mare; PM: Porto Marghera; SG: San Giuliano) of Venice Lagoon, affected by different anthropogenic stressors. The metal pollution index (MPI) scores for U. laetevirens increased in the order SMM < PM < SG (sea inlet < industrial area < Osellino River estuary), with average values per site of 2.99, 4.37, and 6.33, respectively. The level of LPO was statistically correlated with the concentration of toxic metal(loid)s (As, Pb, Hg) measured in macroalgae, and seasonality affected both levels of LPO and metal bioaccumulation, with peak values during spring and summer. These findings highlighted the efficiency and usefulness of the oxidative stress test (LPO) on the common macroalga U. laetevirens as an early warning signal for health assessment in aquatic ecosystems.

Résumé :
In early April 2009, many specimens of Ambrosiodmus (Hopkins, 1915) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), a genus new to Europe, were found overwintering in a living horse chestnut tree (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) in the botanic garden of Padova (NE Italy) (45°23’ N, 11° 52’ E). In October 2009, about 80 peach trees growing in an orchard close to Verona (Alpo di Villafranca, NE Italy) (45°22’ N, 10° 55’ E) were found infested by the same insect. In both cases, the insects were infesting the tree sapwood infected by honey fungus (Armillaria mellea (Vahl) Kummer). Moreover, in the first week of October one specimen was collected also in a pheromone trap baited with ipsdienol and ipsenol and set up in the international harbour of Venice (Marghera, 45°27’ N, 12° 15’ E). Subsequent morphological analyses ascribed the collected specimens to the species A. rubricollis (Eichhoff, 1875), an ambrosia beetle of Asian origin. The infested trees were submitted to sanitation felling and burnt. Some infested log was placed in a transparent and ventilated plastic cage, kept under laboratory conditions (21±1 °C, 70% r.h., and L16:D8 photoperiod) waiting for insect emergence. Emerging adults were removed daily, identified and sexed by morphological features. The rearing gave several thousands of adults, with a female:male ratio of about 40:1.

Résumé :
As a combined result of land subsidence and sea level rise in the vicinity of the City of Venice there has been a net decrease in the difference between the mean elevations of land and sea of about 30 centimetres over the past century. This has resulted in an increased incidence of flooding in Venice with occasional disastrous consequences, as in November 1966 when storm and tide conditions combined to flood the Piazza San Marco to depths exceeding one metre. Among the solutions proposed to solve the flooding problem is a modular tidal barrier that is designed to close the three major entrances to the shallow lagoon in which Venice is situated. Because the lagoon is highly eutrophic and circulation is driven primarily by the tide in the Adriatic Sea, there is concern that operation of the barriers could exacerbate an already serious problem of pollution. The lagoon currently receives the untreated waste water from Venice with an organic loading equivalent to more than 400,000 persons during the tourist season, industrial discharges from the Port of Marghera, and non-point accretions of nutrients from adjacent agricultural areas. Preliminary investigation of the effects of the proposed barrier scheme using mathematical hydrodynamic and water quality models suggests that prolonged isolation of the lagoon from the sea, if this should become necessary for flood protection, may enhance primary production and induce unfavorable water quality conditions. This paper presents results of this investigation and offers suggestions for further refinement and application of the models to assist in the environmental impact assessment which must be performed prior to barrier construction.

Résumé :
Vinyl-chloride monomer (VCM) is classified as a known carcinogen of the liver; for lung cancer, some results suggest a potential association with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) dust. We evaluated the relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure as PVC baggers in a cohort of workers involved in VCM production and polymerization in Porto Marghera (Venice, Italy) considering both employment status and smoking habits. The workers were studied between 1973 and 2017. A subset of them (848 over 1658) was interviewed in the 2000s to collect information about smoking habits and alcohol consumption. Missing values were imputed by the Multivariate Imputation by Chained Equations (MICE) algorithm. We calculated standardized mortality ratios (SMR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) using regional reference rates by task (never, ever, and exclusively baggers) and by smoking habits. Mortality rate ratios (MRR), adjusted for age, calendar time, time since first exposure, and smoking habits, were obtained via Poisson regression using Rubin’s rule to combine results from imputed datasets calculating the fraction of information due to non-response. Lung cancer mortality was lower than the regional reference in the whole cohort (lung cancer SMR = 0.92; 95% CI 0.75–1.11). PVC baggers showed a 50% increase in lung cancer mortality compared to regional rates (SMR = 1.48; 95% CI 0.82–2.68). In the cohort analyses, a doubled risk of lung cancer mortality among PVC baggers was confirmed after adjustment for smoking and time-dependent covariates (MRR = 1.99, 95% CI 1.04–3.81). Exposure to PVC dust resulting from activity as bagger in a polymerization PVC plant was associated with an increase in lung cancer mortality risk after adjustment for smoking habits.

Résumé :
Abstract The detection of weekly preferential occurrences in atmospheric and hydrologic processes has recently attracted much attention as a way to identify the signature of anthropogenic climatic changes. The interpretation of previous analyses, however, is not unequivocal, in part as a result of a lack of widely accepted statistical criteria. Here, a general and exact method to detect the presence of weekly preferential occurrences is developed and applied to long rainfall observations in Marghera, Italy; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Portland, Maine. The method makes use of the fact that, under the null hypothesis of stationarity, the process of event occurrence in the different days of the week is equivalent to the random distribution of a number of balls (the wet days) in a set of boxes (the days of the week). The departure from a homogeneous distribution is then characterized through the probability of the maximum number of balls in a box, which can be computed exactly with no ad hoc assumptions. The new method shows that (i) preferential rainfall weekly occurrences emerge in all cases in the most recent period analyzed (1990–2006), while they are absent—or are too weak to be detected—in previous years (before 1989); and (ii) the balls-in-boxes approach appears to be more sensitive than Pearson’s test when deviations from homogeneity are associated with just one day of the week, a common occurrence in connection with day-of-the-week effects. The results presented help to reconcile previous contrasting studies and to contribute compelling evidence that anthropogenic changes in the local climate have occurred over the past century in urban and industrial areas.

Résumé :
Introduction SCCA1 and SCCA2 belong to the family of serine protease inhibitors (SERPIN). Both SCCA isoforms have been found to be increased in patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of different organs. Recent findings have demonstrated that SCCA-IgM immune complexes are a novel class of biomarkers for primary liver cancer detection. An increase in SCCA-IgM levels in patients with cirrhosis is associated with the development of liver cancer. Aims and methods To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of different isoforms of SCCA-IgM compared with a commercial assay for SCCA-IgM in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Twenty-six patients with HCC (M/F 1 9/7; mean age ± SD: 65 ± 13 years) were analyzed. Serum samples from 28 blood donors (M/F 17/11; mean age ± SD: 38 ± 9 years) were used as control. Two monoclonal antibodies, SCC 111 and SCC 1 04 (CanAg Diagnostics, Gothenburg, Sweden) were used as catcher antibodies to perform specific ELISA for SCCA1-lgM and SCCA2-lgM. SCCA-IgM immune complexes were also detected in serum by a commercial ELISA kit (Hepa-IC, Xeptagen, Marghera, Italy) according to the manufacturer's instructions. Results Circulating SCCA1-IgM was detectable in 6 out of 26 patients (sensitivity 23%), while SCCA2-lgM ELISA was positive in 9 of 26 patients (sensitivity 35%). When SCCA-IgM levels were measured using the commercial assay the diagnostic sensitivity increased to 58% (15/26). The SCCA1-IgM, SCCA2-lgM and SCCA-IgM tests had 100% specificity in healthy controls. Conclusions The commercial assay allowed the detection of both isoforms of SCCA forming the IgM immune complexes, providing a better diagnostic sensitivity score than that obtained with the SCCA1-IgM or SCCA2-lgM test.

Résumé :
Over the last hundred years and since the Second World War at the speed of the Great Acceleration, the Anthropocene has been intensively impacting the Northeast of Italy and, as a result, redrawn the Triangolo Industriale, shifting it towards the East, whereby its two prior western cities – Turin and Genoa – have been replaced with the production hubs scattered along the Via Emilia and Veneto. The coastal region has seen the foundation and robust growth of Porto Marghera with its freight, metallurgy, chemical, mechanical, shipbuilding, oil and electricity sectors; the Veneto plain has witnessed an expansion of SMEs; and Emilia has become home to multinational corporations. While not subject to industrialisation, the mountains of the Triveneto have not been exempt from a thorough modernisation on the scale unparalleled in the Italian Alps. Considering these changes, this paper surveys a range of literary works from Salgari to Scarpa (via Albertazzi, Zavattini, Buzzati, Guerra, D’Arzo, Pratt, Malerba, Altan, Nanetti, Benni, Rigoni Stern, Molesini, Costa, Corona, Carminati, Sgardoli, Tamaro, Tessaro and Ervas) in order to establish what role is given to environmental issues by the authors of children’s literature in the Northeast and whether (dis)continuities emerge in the body of their writings in this respect. The paper also investigates which authors present an active sensitivity useful for fostering an eco-consciousness and in what ways they do so. The methodology combines an array of critical tools developed in eco-pedagogical criticism, ecofeminism and the NatCul Matrix, geared to answering a series of questions: (1) Is basic environmental literacy offered? (2) Is a critical reflection on human primacy and environmental (in)sustainability implicit, explicit or absent? (3) How are humanity and nature related in children’s literature? (4) How is eco-justice approached? (5) What attitudinal role does the narrative assign to nature?

Résumé :
In the article the problem of the childhood in the novel “Margherita Dolcevita” by S. Benni has been studied. The well-known Italian author shows the particular situation when the child comes into collision with the world of adults for the first time. That’s why the main character 15-year-old Margherita became an active adolescent who fights for her family and the main family values. The narrative subjectified child’s “I” reflects the world-view of the XXI century where adults are enchanted by the power of consumerism. Margherita struggles for salvation of the family because she is the only child who can find forces to resist the evil in his own pure soul. The process of modeling of the childhood world is accomplished due to the symbolization of the home space as hearth in contrast with modern soulless neighbors’ world embodied by their black house. Margherita became the core to assemble all generations of her family together. The following microdominants of modeling of the childhood world have been defined: existential dimension of home and family, discontinued connection between family generations, the way to self-identity through the life trials and growing up. The formal peculiarities of the novels such as visuality, unity of composition, burning conflict to show as if from within a difficult emotional and psychological situation in which the character is found have been investigated. This novel by its title “Margherita Dolcevita” gives the child answer to the challenge of the world which she would like to preserve as kind and joyful. The studied novel is rated between the best examples of literature on child’s problems and childhood. Unfortunately this writer remains quite unknown to Ukrainian audience. This fact shows the topicality of this research.

Résumé :
The rapid industrialization and growing energy needs have put a great stress on the conventional energy resources. This is even more concerning for a country like India which is a net importer of oil. To meet the ever increasing need for energy, it is essential that the search for unconventional energy is intensified. This paper deals with the estimation of coal bed methane potential of the Margherita Coal Field of Assam, India. For this purpose, eight coal samples were collected from Tirap O.C.P., Ledo UG Incline and Tikak O.C.P collieries of the Margherita coal field. Proximate analysis, megascopic study and finally qualitative analysis of these eight samples was undertaken. After analysis, the inferred reserves of CBM at Margherita Coalfield, was found to be in the range of 42.5-49.04 Billion Cubic Meter.Int J Appl Sci Biotechnol, Vol 3(2): 232-235DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/ijasbt.v3i2.12449
