Texte intégralEnglish: Margaret Ballinger was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 11 January 1894 and was the youngest child of Lilias and John Hodgson. The family emigrated to South Africa in 1904. After a brilliant school career, she completed an M.A. in History at Oxford and thereafter became a senior lecturer in History at the University of the Witwatersrand. Her academic career ended in 1935 due to her marriage to the well-known trade union leader, William Ballinger, as married women were not allowed to hold permanent posts. After this Ballinger devoted herself to politics. Although she had no parliamentary ambitions, and strongly opposed the Representation of Natives Act of 1936, she made herself available as an African National Congress candidate in the Eastern Cape native electoral circle in 1937. This was a result of her political philosophy to use every opportunity to fight segregation in South Africa. Ballinger won the seat in spite of strong opposition and represented it for a period of 23 years. In the House of Assembly Ballinger distinguished herself as a brilliant parliamentarian and was reputed to be one of South Africa's most able politicians. In addition, she proved to be an untiring representative of her voters. This, together with the fact that she opposed any racial or political intolerance, made Ballinger an internationally known personality. This achievement took a lot of courage and sacrifices from her as an independent. That she was prepared to make these sacrifices in order to 7 achieve her ideal of a multiracial and democratic South Africa, is shown by her leadership of the Liberal Party - a party whose founding she opposed and whose leadership she did not seek. The tragedy of Ballinger's political career was that she was politically isolated and rejected by her constituents at the time of her forced retirement in terms of the Promotion of Bantu Self Government Act of 1959. She was too moderate for the increasingly militant blacks, and too radical for the whites of South Africa. This isolation was aggravated by the fact that she never was part of the liberal main stream. During the twenties and thirties she was considered to be too radical, and during the fifties she was regarded as being too conservative. The fact that her retirement coincided with the violence and the state of emergency of 1960 was a bitter one for Ballinger. She felt that she had failed in all her political goals. However, the opposite is true, as Ba 11 i nger in fact kept the flame of South African liberal ism and the ideal of a multiracial and democratic South Africa burning throughout her amazing parliamentary career.

Texte intégralENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study is an historical analysis of the History of St. Margaret’s Anglican Parish, situated in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. While documenting the history of the parish since its establishment in 1942, it also critically examines its response to the socio-political changes the country was going through such as the Group Areas Act and in so doing, determines the extent of its own transformation. St. Margaret’s was not the first Anglican parish in Parow. An Anglican presence existed in Parow since 1900 with St. John the Baptist being the first parish along with an Anglican primary school, namely Glen Lily. The Anglican parishes of Parow were profoundly affected by apartheid, especially the Group Areas Act which completely changed the landscape of the town and the roles of the parishes. It led to the deconsecration of St. John’s and the closure of Glen Lily Primary school. The church building survived, but the school was completely demolished. St. Margaret’s did became an independent parish, but faced many challenges as it struggled to cope with the call from the Anglican Church to become agents of reconciliation while Archbishop Tutu called for sanctions against South Africa and seemingly supported the armed struggle. Despite the unhappiness with the Archbishop’s call for greater commitment to the abolition of apartheid, the congregation did in time find its own metier.

Texte intégralIn this study I am analyzing how categories of sexuality and gender are represented in Marguerite de Navarre’s Heptameron. I have narrowed the object of study down to two of the seventy-two novellas; number forty-seven and forty-three, and to four of the ten devisants; Oisille, Parlamente, Hircan and Dagoucin. The theoretical frame is taken from Judith Butlers Gender Trouble. Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (1990) and Undoing Gender (2004) and from Thomas Laqueurs Making Sex. Body and Gender from the Greeks to Freud (1990). Butler’s aim is to deconstruct terms such as feminine and masculine, which function as imagined normalization categories due to power relations. In Undoing Gender she asks: “If I am a certain gender, will I still be regarded as part of the human? Will the ‘human’ expand to include me in its reach? If I desire in certain ways, will I be able to live?” These questions are of great importance for my study, which presents how the categories of sexuality and gender can be negotiated in the equalized frame Marguerite de Navarre creates for her ten devisants and novellas. At the same time I assess how every attempt to go beyond the boundaries of norms fails due to a norm of heterosexuality, which constrains the binary categories of man and woman. There are four main discourses by which the heterosexual norm is internalized by the devisants in Heptameron: the Christian, the aristocratic, the patriarchal and the neo-platonic. I suggest that each of the four devisants that I have studied represents one of these discourses. Since there are no definitive lines or definitive conclusions reached in the discussions among them it would be more correct to say that all the discourses effect all of the devisants to some extent, but that all the devisants act through a main discourse when he/she express his/her individual opinions. When the devisants in the frame leave it to the reader to come to a conclusion about right or wrong behavior for men and women, they are still rather set in their own opinions and, also, quite unforgiving. It is my contention that the novellas create more room for negotiations of the sexual and gender roles than the frame. In novella forty-three a woman acts within the role of the active, hence masculine, part of a love affair, and novella forty-seven tells the story of a parfaicte amytié between two men. But it is also obvious that these attempts to stress and break the norms of sexuality and gender are unsuccessful, once again due to the fixed norm of heterosexuality which constrain the binary categories of man and woman. In the novellas these very failures put the norms under stress, since they point out the very problem with the determination of sexual and gender categories which were prevalent during the Renaissance. I conclude my results by returning to Butler’s question above; “If I desire in certain ways, will I be able to live?” In Heptameron one can always find a chance to try a different way, but in the end only the heterosexual desire in which man and woman are in dichotomy survives.

Texte intégralThe study deals with the various aspects of space and time : space and time of history as related to the major characters of the novels : space and time of narration ; space of the reader. It also deals with such technical aspects of the enunciation as focalization, narration (narrative technique) and narratee. The continuity and changes that the author's narrative technique undergoes throughout her career as a novelist are pointed out in the process before they are then picked up in the conclusive part of the study

Texte intégralThe main ambition of this PhD thesis is to provide a study of Margaret Thatcher’s political image through the lens of various personal characteristics like her experience, ideas, physical presentation, political postures or the communication strategies she relied on. The objective is to emphasize the different elements put forward by Margaret Thatcher and by the image transmission channels, notably the media and her political circle. The period studied encompasses the forty years that went by between the first time Margaret Thatcher stood for election, for the Dartford constituency in 1950, until the end of her last Prime Ministerial mandate in 1990. This PhD thesis also has the advantage of focusing on a period of time during which many political communication techniques developed while communication advisers came to play a predominant role
