Zodiacus vitae, an influential philosophical poem by Marcello Palingenio Stellato, enjoyed popularity in Early Modern Europe, as evidenced by over sixty foreign editions, several translations and a 16th-century Polish-language paraphrase. Despite the latter being a testimony to Palingenius’work being read by the most prominent Renaissance humanists in Poland, the poem’s readership in Old Polish literature has remained largely unknown. The goal of this article is, therefore, to outline a new map of its readership in Early Modern Poland, Pomerania and Silesia, citing its presence in book inventories, public libraries, book collections and monastery libraries. Zodiacus circulated for instance in the 16th and 17th centuries among booksellers and bookstore owners in the most important printing centre in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth − Lviv (Piotr of Poznań, Baltazar Hybner) and Cracow (Helena Unglerowa, Franciszek Jakub Mercenich). It was no less popular in the private book collections of the townspeople, physicians, noblemen and aristocracy. Among the owners of the poem can be found for example: famous scholar and professor Jan Brożek, historian at the court of King Stephen Bathory –Giovanni Michele Bruto, poet Jan Gawiński, reformer of education and the mayor of Toruń−Henryk Stroband. Some light on the problem of the Zodiacus’popularity is also shed by an analysis of copious amounts of marginal notes in over seventy extant copies of Palingenius’work preserved in Polish libraries.

Summary This article explores the literary sources of Book III of Zodiacus vitae, a philosophical poem by Marcellus Palingenius Stellatus. Publish in Venice in 1536, it was banned by Inquisition and condemned to oblivion in its native Italy. The infamy of the work in Italy was in stark contrast with the popularity it enjoyed in early modern Europe, including Poland. Book III (Gemini), which contains the work’s best passages, tells the story of the poet’s journey to the Garden of Lust (Voluptas), filled with a series of allegorical figures, where he was lectured on the nature of pleasure and its uses. In this way the garden is turned into Humanist locus docendi. The article tries to explain the main philospohical sources and contexts of this learned debate.

The Italian humanist Marcellus Palingenius Stellatus, the author of Zodiacus vitae, a popular teaching poem (philosophical poem, epic, “great epic”) published in several editions and translations throughout Europe for centuries, is one of the mysterious figures in the history of European literature. His biography is largely uncertain, and is mainly derived from the work itself. this work is a moral and philosophical poem divided into twelve books according to the signs of the zodiac. The zodiac signs follow each other according to the ancient Roman calendar. To summarize the knowledge of man available in the early 16th century, Palingenius used the works of antique authors, especially the poems of Virgil, Horace and Ovid. His allusions, adaptations and transpositions, as well as their sources, are extremely diverse. After the first Venetian edition presumably dated 1531, new editions of the book appeared in succession, even though it was constantly on the list of forbidden books (Index librorum prohibitorum) from 1557 onwards. The impact history of the work has long been a separate research topic, but it has not been dealt with in Hungary so far. Translations of the national languages of the Zodiacus vitae have been and continue to be produced since the second half of the 16th century. The first and still the only complete manuscript translation in Hungarian was made by József Elefánti Jáklin in 1771. The manuscript was not published, but several copies survived in Bratislava, Budapest, Eger and Pécs. There is no exact answer to the question of which Latin edition Jáklin translated as the catalogue of the his library is unknown.

The work primarily provides a new, wide bibliography (more than 200 pages) of the Zodiacus vitae of Marcello Palingenio Stellato, also enlighting his life and work (specifically in relation to its audience). Also, the work provides useful information aimed to scholars about a number of not well-known authors, like Giovita Rapicio, Lilio Gregorio Giraldi, Nicolas Bourbon (see the ‘tag’ section below for a more comprehensive list). However, the work should be considered an essay of a bibliographical work in itself, as well as an anthology of excerpts of great beauty and interest. L'opera fornisce primariamente una nuova, vasta bibliografia (oltre 200 pagine) dello Zodiacus vitae di Marcello Palingenio Stellato, anche illuminandone la vita e l'opera (specialmente in relazione al suo pubblico). Inoltre, questo lavoro fornisce informazioni utili a studiosi di un certo numero di autori non ben noti, come Giovita Rapicio, Lilio Gregorio Giraldi, Nicolas Bourbon (v. la voce ‘tag’ sotto, per una lista più comprensiva). Nel complesso, quest'opera dovrebbe anche essere considerata sia un saggio di lavoro bibliografico, sia un'antologia di passi di grande bellezza e interesse.
