Résumé :
Fifty five wetlands comprising bils (32), dighis (7), jhils (2), pond/pukur (8) and rivers (6) distributed in 13 administrative blocks of Maldah district were surveyed and characteristic features were studied for occurrence of different types of aquatic plants, their categories and local environmental conditions. During the study, altogether 37 aquatic plant species were identified, belonging to Algae and Bryophytes (one species each), 3 species to Pteridophytes and 32 species to Angiosperms (7 species to Monocots and 25 species to Dicots). Depending upon occurrence of these plants in and along the wetlands, they have been categorized into 5 categories namely freefloating and bottom rooted floating (7 species each), submerged and emergent (6 species each) and littoral (constitutes 11 species). Occurrence of free floating Azolla pinnata R.Br. having symbiotic relationship with Anabaena azollae Strasb. in a few wetlands was remarkable. Besides, most of the observed wetlands have either been extinct and/or on the verge of extinction, needs for their restoration and protection to save the aquatic biodiversity (including micro flora and fauna).

Résumé :
The highest area of fresh water wetlands in the West Bengal is situated in the district of Maldah. Out of 23 larger wetlands of West Bengal 11 are located in this district. Maldah-wetlands are quite old and natural with good biodiversity and healthy ecosystem. These wetlands are the house of around 351 vascular plant species and several animal species like waterfowl, fishes, reptiles, amphibians, mollusks and numerous insects. The local people largely depend also on these wetlands for their sustenance. But several threats, mainly anthropogenic, are gradually destroying these important ecosystems since the last decade.

Résumé :
Euryale ferox Salisb. is commercially very important plant as it possesses spiritual significance, potent medicinal properties and enhances socio-economical condition of the locality. In India, this plant is grown annually at large scale in 9 districts of North Bihar namely Madhubani, Darbhanga, Katihar, Sitamarhi, Purnea, Kishanganj, Araria, Saharsa and Supaul. However, its cultivation was started in 1998 in neighbouring district Maldah specifically in Harishchandrapur - II Block of Tal area by bringing seeds from Darbangha, Bihar on experimental basis with assistance of the State Government of West Bengal. By 2001, it spread from Harishchandrapur - II Block to Harishchandrapur - I Block followed by Chanchal - II Block in Tal area to Gajol Block in Barind area and to Diara area by 2012. The exponential spread of plant and adoption of cultivation practice in Maldah district has altered the actual agricultural practice of the district and creating ecological imbalances in water bodies resulted in loss of aquatic biodiversity and may lead to health hazard of the associated personnel though the popped makhana is on high pricing and demand. Thus, this article deals with different kinds of impacts and mitigation measures for restoration of water bodies, aquatic biodiversity and welfare of associated manpower for their better livelihood.

Résumé :
Some ripe mangoes were collected from the mango orchard located at Digha in Patna district, in Patna of Bihar. The pulp and peels of these mangoes were separated and they were lyophilized and stored at 20°C and thereafter they were analyzed separately for total phenolics in the pulp and the peels of these mangoes of Maldah Cultivar (principle). The total content of phenolics in the pulp and peels of the ripe Maldah mangoes were estimated using folin-ciocatten reagent at 75 nm in an UV-Vis Spectrophotometer using galic acid for expressing the standard curve and subsequently the total result was expressed as mg GAE (Galic Acid Equivalent/100g of fresh weight). Surprisingly the result shows the greater content of phenolics in peels in respect of the pulps.

This concluding chapter presents some reflections about the trajectory of constitutional development in Malaysia. The Malaysian Constitution was conceived with a clear aim of dividing powers among the political entities of executive, legislature, judiciary, and the Malay Rulers. However, in contemporary Malaysia now, there is increasing unease over the unconstrained expansion of executive power, as well as strong distrust in the unbridled exercise of powers in the name of protecting public order and security. The Malaysian nation’s ability to traverse the path of harmony and national advancement in a shrinking world will depend on the fidelity of its political leaders and its many peoples to the constitutional understandings embodied in the Merdeka Constitution, the constitutional principles of fairness, justice, and equality, as well as a common subscription to the fundamental importance of upholding the rule of law.

Dino, Nelson, Baharudin Arus, Lokman Abdul Samad et Jul-Amin Ampang. Suluk Ukkil on the Barong Expressions, motifs and meanings. UMS Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.51200/sulukukkilnelsonums2021.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
With its origin dating back to as early as the 500 BC, the ukkil forms part of a centuries-old woodcarving art and tradition of the Suluk, one of the many indigenous ethnic groups of Nusantara (Southeast Asia). Suluk ukkil bears striking resemblance to the Malay ukir, both featuring similar patterns and motifs. The ukkil is often used to decorate jewellery, boats, houses, grave markers, and mosques. It is also used to decorate the hilts and sheaths of bladed weapons such as the barung. The barung refers to the thick, leaf-shaped sword of the Suluk. A barung with beautifully carved hilt and sheath, especially those using expensive wood, is considered high value and usually reserved for Suluk aristocrats. This book narrates the expressions, motifs and meanings behind ukkil carved on the barung. It is based on the results of a two-year field research conducted in different districts of Sabah. It presents data gathered through various interviews with owners, elders, and subject-matter experts. It also presents data from direct observations of heirloom barung that are still found in the hands of a few Suluk and individuals from other indigenous ethnic groups. It presents new insights from analysis made using the Theory of Iconology, a framework of analyzing art popularized by German art historian Erwin Panofsky. The predominant themes of ukkil found on ancient barung in Sabah are Islamic; zoomorphic such as birds, lizards, snakes, and squids; plantomorphic such as vines, flowers, and leaves; and cultural such as those depicting local myths, culture, values and traditions of the Suluk. Each of these images and themes represent realities that shaped the daily lives of the Suluk from the past until today, including the wind, the ocean waves and sea currents, all of which are essential for travel and navigation. They also depict concepts, beliefs and practices important to the Suluk such as freedom, livelihood, aristocracy, harmony within the community, leadership, spirituality, and Islamic principles. The Suluk are a sea-faring people who have a deep relationship with their immediate environment, especially the sea. Suluk carvers draw inspiration from nature, the environment around them, their local culture, their religious practices, and their own values and ideals in life. Both the ukkil and the barung are an embodiment of their rich past, their livelihood, creativity, their faith, their principles and their values in life. Sadly, the practice of ukkil-carving is fast declining nowadays, with only very few practitioners left and so few individuals interested in learning about it. The barung too, where the ukkil is often carved on, is no longer being produced in large numbers. As the ukkil, like all forms of art, constitute an integral part of a nation’s culture and identity, it is important for it to be understood, preserved, and protected. This book provides fresh knowledge and insights that will help the Suluk and other indigenous tribes of Malaysia and Nusantara in the understanding and preservation of the ukkil as an essential aspect of their country’s or their region’s culture and heritage. This book offers historical background that will help explain the identity of the Suluk as a culturally and artistically advanced people with deep interconnection with other indigenous ethnic groups in Malaysia and the rest of Nusantara as early as the pre-colonial period. Knowledge about the ukkil can help people connect and correct their thoughts about the Suluk while at the same time promote cultural awareness and diversity among Malaysians and other people in Southeast Asia. This book will hopefully pave the way for more research to be done on the arts and culture, not just of the Suluk but also of other indigenous ethnic groups in the region as well. That knowledge will serve as a medium for keeping harmony and cultural links among each and every Malaysian and Nusantaran.

Résumé :
Tourism is a major engine of economic growth in the world. In ancient times, travelers travelled from one country to another country or one region to another region in order to spread religion or for gaining knowledge about religion. Travelers or tourists travelling for religion or spiritual purposes are called religious tourists or pilgrimage tourists and that's where religious tourism developed. Pilgrims or devotees are sometimes seen travelling over long distances in the hope of gaining virtue. All over the world there are many religious spots like Hajj in Mecca, Church in Jerusalem, and four Dhams of India, etc. Malda, one of the most underdeveloped districts of West Bengal, has religious tourism potential. There is a saying, ‘First is Medina and then is Adina'. Apart from this, Ramkeli Village, and many Buddhist temples and Bihara are located there. Devotees of both the Hindu and Muslim faiths perform Puja at Jahuratala temple. This chapter is an attempt to analyse the pilgrimage tourist potential as well as the status of the pilgrimage tourism of Malda district.

Abstract I now called upon the District Governor, and found him at home, surrounded by a bevy of officers in full uniform. He told me that a Cossack colonel had recently died of consumption, and that the funeral ceremony was then going on inside the church. The men of the regiment were all mounted and drawn up facing the holy edifice. The cold was very great, and the troops had every facility afforded them for sowing the seeds of their colonel’s malady. Indeed, the frost was so severe that the District Governor and his friends had found it inconvenient to remain inside the church, and had returned to drink tea at home, until such time as the service was concluded.

Résumé :
The essay aims to illustrate the results of the I-Access Interreg Italia-Malta 2016–20 project, carried out by a partnership led by the Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo with the scientific coordination of Renata Prescia. The project involved the Vucciria district in Palermo and the Bijcceria district in Valletta. Within the framework of the products created (database, web platform, mobile apps, protocol, etc.), we would like to explain in this paper the measures taken to facilitate physical and cultural accessibility from the integrated point of view of restoration and exhibition design, that is, in particular measures to overcome architectural barriers, measures for cultural dissemination and measures of a museographic-communicative nature, including re-evocations of lost or dislocated monuments and artistic works. The proposal is designed as a method for historic urban areas that have similar problems to the district under study. The Vucciria, for example, despite its high density of monuments, has a low quality of life because many of its monuments, especially churches, are closed and therefore unusable and because there is little motivation for local people to engage with these monuments, partly because it is an evolving community. The proposal, therefore, provides for concrete actions to restore the memory of the inhabitants and to re-establish an identity bond with the context, with concrete implications for attracting widespread tourism to provide opportunities for renewal for the district. Project proposals included the installation of three urban totems, ten tactile maps associated with as many churches, and the design of two new access ramps to two churches. By being realized as smart additions in a contemporary and stimulating way compared to the interventions characterized by a solipsistic retour au passè and previously carried out in accordance with the philosophy of the current urban plan, they also become an educational opportunity for a dialoguing community.

Résumé :
At the Thai-Malaysian border, a majority of the population comprises the Thai-Melayu ethnic group, as speakers of the Pattani-Malay dialect. Here, heritage language maintenance presents a salient factor. The ethnicity resides on both sides of the border. This study aims to investigate the heritage language maintenance and identities of the Thai-Melayu ethnic group in Jaleh Village, Yarang District, Pattani, Thailand, and to examine their attitudes towards the language used in their community. The samples-set comprised 20 local respondents who were born and raised in the village. A questionnaire addressing the effects of the heritage language maintenance of the Thai-Melayu was employed as a tool of data collection. A descriptive analysis method was used for data analysis. The results of the study revealed ideological underpinnings of the ethnic group with regards to language, as well as demographic information that informs population and cultural studies. These factors include that the Pattani-Malay dialect constitutes a major language, where the Thai language in comparison has a minor usage in the community. The Pattani-Malay dialect is used in the family domain, with extended families, or with neighbors, and in ritualistic or religion domains. In contrast, Thai is used with strangers, in government and official domains, in the school domain, and in the domain of public health. Moreover, the results support that the dialect has not as yet become endangered, evidenced by that the samples prefer the Pattani-Malay dialect as the main language for daily life, and for passing on their ethnic language to younger generations, a process labeled as ‘accidental maintenance.’
