Résumé :
We report a novel ultrabroadband high-energy femtosecond laser to be built in our laboratory. A 7-femtosecond pulse is firstly stretched by an eight-pass offner stretcher with a chirp rate 15 ps/nm, and then energy-amplified by a two-stage optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA). The first stage as preamplification with three pieces of BBO crystals provides the majority of the energy gain. At the second stage, a YCOB crystal with the aperture of ~50 mm is used instead of the KDP crystal as the gain medium to ensure the shortest pulse. After the completion, the laser will deliver about 8 J with pulse duration of about 10 femtoseconds, which should be beneficial to the attosecond pulse generation and other ultrafast experiments.

Résumé :
Single-component molecular conductors exhibit a strong connection to the Dirac electron system. The formation of Dirac cones in single-component molecular conductors relies on (1) the crossing of HOMO and LUMO bands and (2) the presence of nodes in the HOMO–LUMO couplings. In this study, we investigated the possibility of Dirac cone formation in two single-component molecular conductors derived from nickel complexes with extended tetrathiafulvalenedithiolate ligands, [Ni(tmdt)2] and [Ni(btdt)2], using tight-biding models and first-principles density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. The tight-binding model predicts the emergence of Dirac cones in both systems, which is associated with the stretcher bond type molecular arrangement. The DFT calculations also indicate the formation of Dirac cones in both systems. In the case of [Ni(btdt)2], the DFT calculations, employing a vdW-DF2 functional, reveal the formation of Dirac cones near the Fermi level in the nonmagnetic state after structural optimization. Furthermore, the DFT calculations, by utilizing the range-separated hybrid functional, confirm the antiferromagnetic stability in [Ni(btdt)2], as observed experimentally.

Résumé :
Nonhomogeneous distributions of strains are simulated and utilized to determine two potential errors in the measurement of cardiac strains. First, the error associated with the use of single-plane imaging of myocardial markers is examined. We found that this error ranges from small to large values depending on the assumed variation in stretch. If variations in stretch are not accompanied by substantial regional changes in ventricular radius, the associated error tends to be quite small. However, if the nonuniform stretch field is a result of substantial variations in local curvature from their reference values, large errors in stretch and strain occur. For canine hearts with circumferential radii of 2 to 4 cm, these errors in stretch may be as great as 30 percent or more. Moreover, gradients in stretch may be over- or underestimated by as much as 100 percent. In the second part of this analysis, the influence of random measurement errors in the coordinate positions of markers on strains computed from them is studied. Arrays of markers covering about 16 cm2 of ventricular epicardium are assumed and nonuniform stretches imposed. The reference and deformed positions of the markers are perturbed with Gaussian noise with a standard deviation of 0.1 mm, and then strains are computed using either homogeneous strain theory or a nonhomogeneous finite element method. For the strain distributions prescribed, it is found that the finite element method reduces the error resulting from noise by about 50 percent over most of the region. Accurate measurements of cardiac strain distributions are needed for correlation with and validation of realistic three-dimensional stress analyses of the heart. Moreover, with the advent of increasingly effective noninvasive methods to measure cardiac deformation such as magnetic resonance imaging, the use of nonhomogeneous strain analysis to determine more accurate strain distributions has increasing clinical significance.

Résumé :
In the last two decades, single-molecule force measurements using optical and magnetic tweezers and atomic force spectroscopy have dramatically expanded our knowledge of nucleic acids and proteins. These techniques characterize the force on a biomolecule required to produce a given molecular extension. When stretching long DNA molecules, the observed force–extension relationship exhibits a characteristic plateau at approximately 65 pN where the DNA may be extended to almost twice its B-DNA length with almost no increase in force. In the present review, I describe this transition in terms of the Poland–Scheraga model and summarize recent related studies.

Résumé :
Abstract. A model is presented for a new type of fast solitary waves which is observed in downward current regions of the auroral zone. The three-dimensional, coherent structures are electrostatic, have a positive potential, and move along the magnetic field lines with speeds on the order of the electron drift. Their parallel potential profile is flattened and cannot fit to the Gaussian shape used in previous work. We develop a detailed BGK model which includes a flattened potential and an assumed cylindrical symmetry around a centric magnetic field line. The model envisions concentric shells of trapped electrons slowly drifting azimuthally while bouncing back and forth in the parallel direction. The electron dynamics is analysed in terms of three basic motions that occur on different time scales characterized by the cyclotron frequency We , the bounce frequency wb , and the azimuthal drift frequency wg. The ordering We >> wb >> wg is required. Self-consistent distribution functions are calculated in terms of approximate constants of motion. Constraints on the parameters characterizing the amplitude and shape of the stretched solitary wave are discussed.

AbstractMagnetized objects surrounded by a turbulent and keplerian accretion disk are considered. In such systems, magnetic field lines are embedded into the disk. The magnetic field of the central object is assumed to be dipolar in the absence of the accretion disk. In the presence of a turbulent accretion disk, it is shown that the interaction with the disk stretches magnetic field lines along the disk and that most of the non-magnetospheric magnetic flux is expelled outside the disk.

Résumé :
Experiments and numerical simulations of fully developed turbulence reveal the existence of elongated vortices whose length is of the order of the integral scale of turbulence while the diameter is somewhere between the Kolmogorov scale and the Taylor microscale. These vortices are embedded in quasi-irrotational background flow whose straining action counteracts viscous decay and determines their cross-sectional shape. In the present paper we analyse the effect of a stretched vortex of this kind on a uni-directional magnetic flux tube aligned with vorticity in an electrically conducting fluid. When the magnetic Prandtl number is large, Pm[gsim ]1, the field is concentrated in a flux tube which, like the vortex itself, has elliptical cross-section inclined at 45° to the principal axes of strain. We focus on the limit Pm[Lt ]1 when the magnetic flux tube has radial extent much larger than that of the vortex, which appears like a point vortex as regards its action on the flux tube. We find the steady-state solution valid in the entire plane outside the vortex core. The solution shows that the magnetic field has a logarithmic spiral component and no definite orientation of the inner contours. Such magnetized vortices may be expected to exist in MHD turbulence with weak magnetic field where the field shows a tendency to align itself with vorticity. Magnetized vortices may also be expected to exist on the solar surface near the corners of convection cells where downwelling swirling flow tends to concentrate the magnetic field.

Résumé :
Magnetic properties of ferromagnetic nanofilms on non-magnetic substrate are examined by computer simulation. The substrate influence is modeled using the two-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova potential. The film has a cubic crystal lattice. Cases of different ratio for substrate period and ferromagnetic film period are considered. The difference in film and substrate periods results in film deformations. These deformations result in a change in the magnetic properties of the film. The Ising model and the Metropolis algorithm are used for the study of magnetic properties. The dependence of Curie temperature on film thickness and substrate potential parameters is calculated. Cases of different values for the coverage factor are considered. The deformation of the film layers is reduced away from the substrate when it is compressed or stretched. The Curie temperature increases when the substrate is compressed and decreases when the substrate is stretched. This pattern is performed for films with different thicknesses. If the coating coefficient for the film is different from one, periodic structures with an increased or reduced concentration of atoms are formed in the film first layer. These structures are absent in higher layers.

Résumé :
Abstract A stretch wire magnetometer is a versatile instrument and can be treated as the primary standard of magnetic qualification of accelerator magnets. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre has developed a Stretch wire magnetic measurement system to cater to the requirements of magnetic measurements on accelerator magnets. This bench also includes a vibrating wire system. The scheme used in this instrument for measurements of magnetic flux ensures drift compensations after each scan. This feature along with post-signal processing gives an accuracy of homogeneity measurements comparable to that of a rotating coil magnetometer. Unlike conventional stretch wire systems, wire moves in the r-z plane (along r-axis) at different azimuthal angles. This provides the opportunity for drift compensation at each scan. This has immensely enhanced the measurement accuracy of non-homogeneity of integral fields to less than 3 units. The same is cross-verified with a rotating coil system. The comparison between rotating coil and stretch wire is presented. The Paper gives the step-wise procedure for the measurement of key performance indicators of an accelerator magnet. This paper brings out salient features of the system along with design and calibration results.

Résumé :
Knowledge of the biomechanical properties of human atherosclerotic plaques is of essential importance for developing more insights in the pathophysiology of the cardiovascular system and for better predicting the outcome of interventional treatments such as balloon angioplasty. Available data are mainly based on uniaxial tests, and most of the studies investigate the mechanical response of fibrous plaque caps only. However, stress distributions during, for example, balloon angioplasty are strongly influenced by all components of atherosclerotic lesions. A total number of 107 samples from nine human high-grade stenotic iliac arteries were tested; associated anamnesis of donors reported. Magnetic resonance imaging was employed to test the usability of the harvested arteries. Histological analyses has served to characterize the different tissue types. Prepared strips of 7 different tissue types underwent cyclic quasistatic uniaxial tension tests in axial and circumferential directions; ultimate tensile stresses and stretches were documented. Experimental data of individual samples indicated anisotropic and highly nonlinear tissue properties as well as considerable interspecimen differences. The calcification showed, however, a linear property, with about the same stiffness as observed for the adventitia in high stress regions. The stress and stretch values at calcification fracture are smaller (179±56 kPa and 1.02±0.005) than for each of the other tissue components. Of all intimal tissues investigated, the lowest fracture stress occurred in the circumferential direction of the fibrous cap (254.8±79.8 kPa at stretch 1.182±0.1). The adventitia demonstrated the highest and the nondiseased media the lowest mechanical strength on average.

Résumé :
The objective of this research is to examine the steady incompressible two-dimensional hydromagnetic boundary layer flow of nanofluid passing through a stretched sheet in the influence of viscous and ohmic dissipations. The present problem is obtained with the help of an analytical technique called DTM-Pade Approximation. The mathematical modeling of the flow is considered in the form of the partial differential equation and is transformed into a differential equation through suitable similarity transformation. The force of fixed parameters like thermophoresis number Nt, Brownian motion number Nb, Prandtl number Pr, Lewis number Le, Magnetic field M, suction/injection S and Eckart number Ec are displayed with the aid of Figures. Our outcomes showed a greater trend in the velocity profile for the parameters of magnetics M, suction S, and nonlinear stretching parameter n. While the reverse trend is found against the temperature profile when the Prandtl number increases. Lewis number and other parameters have shown increasing behavior in the concentration profile.

The standard Ising model in two and three dimensions was simulated with Metropolis-Glauber kinetics on the Intel Hypercube with 32 MIMD processors of i860 type, each with 16 megabytes of distributed memory, and on 8 such processors of the Alliant FX with shared memory. The nucleation time in reverse magnetic fields h. was found to increase as 1/h2 in three dimensions, for times up to millions of iterations. The relaxation towards the equilibrium spontaneous magnetization was a simple exponential in three dimensions and a stretched exponential in two below the critical temperature; its power-law decay at the critical point lead to z=2.18(d=2) and =2.09 (d=3). The Becker-Döring equation for the growth of microdroplets leads at the critical temperature to a growth rate vanishing with some power of the time.

Résumé :
The magnetization, ac susceptibility and magnetic relaxation of Nd0.90Sr0.10CoO3polycrystalline sample were systematically investigated in this paper. The experimental studies of susceptibility and magnetic relaxation evidence the existence of a low-temperature spin-glass. A dynamic analysis of ac susceptibility implies a spin-glass transition temperature TSG =12.17 K and the dynamical exponent zv=8. Moreover, low-temperature zero-field cooling and field cooling magnetic relaxation show perfectly mirror symmetry, and field cooling processes relaxation obeys a stretched exponential form. Therefore, our study confirms that the phase separation in Nd0.90Sr0.10CoO3originates from both the ferromagnetic clusters interaction and the spin glasslike phase at low temperature.

Résumé :
A thick-walled circular cylindrical tube made of an incompressible magnetoelastic material is subjected to a finite static deformation in the presence of an internal pressure, an axial stretch and an azimuthal or an axial magnetic field. The dependence of the static magnetoelastic deformation on the intensity of the applied magnetic field is analysed for two different magnetoelastic energy density functions. Then, superimposed on this static configuration, incremental axisymmetric motions of the tube and their dependence on the applied magnetic field and deformation parameters are studied. In particular, we show that magnetoelastic coupled waves exist only for particle motions in the azimuthal direction. For particle motion in radial and axial directions, only purely mechanical waves are able to propagate when a magnetic field is absent. The wave speeds as well as the stability of the tube can be controlled by changing the internal pressure, axial stretch and applied magnetic field that demonstrates the applicability of magneto-elastomers as wave guides and vibration absorbers.

Résumé :
Recently, the application of cobalt iron boron (CoFeB) thin films in magnetic sensors has been widely studied owing to their high magnetic moment, anisotropy, and stability. However, most of these studies were conducted on rigid silicon substrates. For diverse applications of magnetic and angle sensors, it is important to explore the properties of ferromagnetic thin films grown on nonrigid deformable substrates. In this study, representative deformable substrates (polyimide (PI), polyethylene naphthalate (PEN), and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)), which can be bent or stretched, were used to assess the in-plane magnetic field angle-dependent properties of amorphous Ta/CoFeB/MgO/Ta thin films grown on deformable substrates. The effects of substrate roughness, tensile stress, deformable substrate characteristics, and sputtering on magnetic properties, such as the coercive field (Hc), remanence over saturation magnetization (Mr/Ms), and biaxial characteristics, were investigated. This study presents an unconventional foundation for exploring deformable magnetic sensors capable of detecting magnetic field angles.

Résumé :
Quiescent prominences host a large range of flows, many driven by buoyancy, which lead to velocity shear. The presence of these shear flows could bend and stretch the magnetic field resulting in the formation of current sheets which can lead to magnetic reconnection. Though this has been hypothesised to occur in prominences, with some observations that are suggestive of this process, clear evidence has been lacking. In this paper we present observations performed on June 30, 2015 using the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph Si IV and Mg II slit-jaw imagers of two bi-directional jets that occur inside the body of the prominence. Such jets are highly consistent with what would be expected from magnetic reconnection theory. Using this observation, we estimate that the prominence under study has an ambient field strength in the range of 4.5−9.2 G with ‘turbulent’ field strengths of 1 G. Our results highlight the ability of gravity-driven flows to stretch and fold the magnetic field of the prominence, implying that locally, the quiescent prominence field can be far from a static, force-free magnetic field.

Résumé :
An investigation has been performed to analyze the impacts of Soret and Dufour on natural convective and heat absorbing flow of viscoelastic radiative nanofluid driven by a linearly stretched sheet considering inclined magnetic field. By making use of suitable linear transformations, the mathematical equations of problem are changed into the extremely non-linear coupled system of ordinary differential equations. Further, solutions of these differential equations are obtained by implementing GFEM (Galerkin finite element method). The consequence of various controlling pertinent parameters on nanofluid velocity, solutal concentration, temperature and nanofluid concentration are illustrated by means of various graphs while from engineering aspect numerical values of the shear stress, wall temperature gradient, solutal and nanoparticles concentration rate at the stretched sheet are presented in different tables. The numerical results are compared for mono and double diffusive nanofluids which yield that the aligned magnetic field, viscoelasticity, solutal and Brownian diffusivity have significant impacts on the flow field. The reliability of implemented method is authenticated by comparing our results with the previously published results under certain conditions, which signifies the correctness of the implemented method. The present investigation is applicable in several industrial processes such as coolant application, nano-drug delivery, cooling of microchip, heat exchanger technology, biological fluid movement and oceanography etc. Keywords: Magnetic field; Viscoelastic nanofluid; Thermal radiation; Heat absorption

Résumé :
The purpose of the present study is to analyze the flow, heat and mass transfer characteristics in the three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic stretched flow of Cross nanofluids. In the present study, Brownian movement, thermophoresis, thermal and solute convective boundary conditions are considered. With boundary layer approximation and self-similarity transformations, the non dimensional nonlinear governing equations are solved via shooting iteration technique together with 4th order Runge-Kutta integration scheme. The impact of developed physical parameters on velocity, temperature, concentration, surface viscous drag, heat and mass transfer rates has been examined via appropriate graphs and discussions. The numerical results indicate that uplift in the magnetic field strength and Weissenberg number diminishes the axial and transverse velocity fields. Further, the temperature ratio parameter brings about substantial improvement to the temperature and the related layer. The outcomes of the present study provide significant contribution to the controlled fluid motion and regulating the rate of heat transportation from the solid boundary into the boundary layer.

Résumé :
Background: Tanycytic ependymoma is a rare variant of ependymoma that commonly affects the cervical and thoracic spinal cord. It usually arises as intramedullary lesions and extramedullary cases are extremely rare. Case Description: We present a 77-year-old woman with the complaints of a 2-year history of progressive paraparesis and sensory loss in her lower extremities. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a stretched and fusiform intradural extramedullary lesion at T5-T10 level. Gross total removal of the tumor was achieved and a definitive diagnosis of tanycytic ependymoma was established. Conclusion: This case thus represents a rare case of thoracic intradural extramedullary tanycytic ependymoma and, to the best of our knowledge, it represents the longest intradural extramedullary tanycytic ependymoma in craniocaudal direction ever reported in the literature.

Résumé :
Magnetic fluids with complex rheology are evident in several industrial and manufacturing processes. This study frames applied magnetic field effects on a radioactive rate-type fluid impinging obliquely over a stretched plate. The Oldroyd-B non-Newtonian model is employed, which allows relaxation and retardation effects to be included. The physical framework of the problem under consideration is attained by means of eminent Navier–Stokes theory. The governing physical problem is attained by means of scaling group of transformations, which is then solved numerically. Influence of relatable parameters on normal and tangential velocity and temperature is portrayed. The results revealed that flow and thermal characteristics are significantly affected by sundry parameters. The physical quantity of engineering interest, best known as heat transfer rate, is investigated numerically. It has been observed that thickness of momentum boundary layer decreases with Deborah number K1 and magnetic field parameter M while it enhances with Deborah number K2. Moreover boundary layer thickness related to thermal effects rises due to Deborah number K1 and magnetic field parameter M. The accuracy of the present study is authenticated through excellent agreement with previous literature as a special case.

Résumé :
This paper investigates the influence of both viscous and joules dissipation on the problem of magnetohydrodynamic flow past a stretching porous surface embedded in a porous medium. Analytic solutions of the resulting nonlinear non-homogeneous boundary value problem in the case when the plate stretches with a velocity varying linearly with distance, expressed in terms of confluent hypergeometric functions, are presented for the case of prescribed surface temperature. Numerical calculations have been carried out for various values of suction parameter, magnetic field, Prandtl number, Eckert number and Schmidt number. The results show that increases in magnetic parameter decrease both the dimensionless transverse velocity, longitudinal velocity and also the skin friction coefficient. Also, formation of thin boundary layer is observed for higher value of magnetic parameter.

Résumé :
The divergences, on cooling, of NMR-NQR relaxation rates and muon spin rotation in underdoped cuprates, until now interpreted in terms of glassy spin freezing of magnetic moments resulting from charge inhomogeneities, are critically reconsidered. The relaxation data are analyzed in the light of the lack of dependence from an external magnetic field, of the strength of the effective field driving the divergences and of the stretched exponential character of the recovery processes. By resorting also to the theoretical conclusions of the extended t-J model including the intersite Coulomb interactions, it is argued that the divergences of the relaxation rates, rather than arising from magnetic moments could be related to sliding motions of vortex-antivortex orbital currents coexisting with d-wave superconducting state.
