Résumé :
We demonstrate with morphological characters that the species Pterostyrax burmanicus W.W.Sm. & Farrer and Parastyrax macrophyllus C.Y.Wu & K.M.Feng (Styracaceae) are best placed in the genus Rehderodendron Hu. Rehderodendron burmanicum (W.W.Sm. & Farrer) W.Y.Zhao, P.W.Fritsch & W.B.Liao, comb. nov. and Rehderodendron macrophyllum (C.Y.Wu & K.M.Feng) W.Y.Zhao, P.W.Fritsch & W.B.Liao, comb. nov., are created. We also provide a lectotype for R. macrophyllum. These revisions result in the reduction of Pterostyrax Siebold & Zucc. to three species and this genus is no longer considered to be documented from Myanmar. Further, Parastyrax W.W.Sm. becomes a monotypic genus comprising only P. lacei (W.W.Sm.) W.W.Sm., distributed in Kachin State, northeast Myanmar and Yunnan Province, south-western China.

Résumé :
Tansy, Tanacetum macrophyllum (Waldst. & Kit.) Sch. Bip., is often misidentified by herb collectors as yarrow, Achillea grandifolia Friv. With the former, cases of poisoning induced by its ingestion are well documented, but the latter is widely used for ethnopharmacological purposes. The aim of this study was to estimate, based on the volatile metabolite profiles of the two species, the potential health risk connected with their misidentification. GC and GC-MS analysis of the essential oils hydrodistilled using a Clevenger-type apparatus from A. grandifolia, T. macrophyllum, and two plant samples (reputedly of A. grandifolia, but in fact mixtures of A. grandifolia and T. macrophyllum) obtained from a local market, resulted in the identification of 215 different compounds. The main constituents of A. grandifolia oil were ascaridole (15.5%), α-thujone (7.5%), camphor (15.6%), borneol (5.2%) and (Z)-jasmone (6.4%), and of T. macrophyllum oil, 1,8-cineole (8.6%), camphor (6.4%), borneol (9.1%), isobornyl acetate (9.5%), copaborneol (4.2%) and γ-eudesmol (6.2%). The compositions of the oils extracted from the samples obtained from the market were intermediate to those of A. grandifolia and T. macrophyllum. Significant differences in the corresponding volatile profiles and the literature data concerning the known activities of the pure constituents of the oils, suggested that the pharmacological action of the investigated species (or their unintentional mixtures) would be notably different. It seems, however, that misidentification of T. macrophyllum as A. grandifolia does not represent a health risk and that the absence of the toxic α-thujone from T. macrophyllum oil may in fact be regarded as a benefit.

Résumé :
Phoradendron macrophyllum (Engelm.) Cockerell (Viscaceae) is a common mistletoe found on at least 60 hardwood tree species, including several species of cottonwood (Populus spp.) (1), and is distributed from northern Mexico through Arizona and New Mexico into central California (1). R. Gilbertson recently received a specimen of what appeared to be P. macrophyllum parasitizing a planted aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) on the Wear Ranch near Fort Grant, Graham County, AZ (T. 11 S., R. 21 E., Section 11). A large swelling on a branch bearing a few small mistletoe plants measuring less than 5 cm high indicated the infection. Comparison of the mistletoe leaf trichomes with those of P. macrophyllum (trichomes with two branches from a common base) and P. coryae Trel. (trichomes stellate with secondary and tertiary branching) indicated that the specimen was definitely P. macrophyllum (2). To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. macrophyllum, or any other mistletoe, on aspen. References: (1) R. Scharpf and F. Hawksworth. USDA For. Serv. Pest Leafl. 147, 1974. (2) D. Wiens. Résumé :
Chrysosplenium macrophyllum Oliv., belonging to the family Saxifragaceae, is a traditional and unique Chinese herbal medicine. However, the lack of adequate molecular markers has hampered the progress regarding population genetics and evolution within this species. In this research, we used the DNBSEQ-T7 Sequencer (MGI) sequencing assay to analyze the transcriptome profiles of C. macrophyllum. SSR markers were developed on the basis of transcriptomic sequences and further validated on C. macrophyllum and other Chrysosplenium species. The genetic diversity and structure of the 12 populations were analyzed by using polymorphic expressed sequence tag simple sequence repeat (EST-SSR) markers. A potential pool of 3127 non-redundant EST-SSR markers were identified for C. macrophyllum in this study. The developed EST-SSR markers had high amplification rates and cross-species transferability in Chrysosplenium. Our results also showed that the natural populations of C. macrophyllum had a high level of genetic diversity. Genetic distance, principal component analysis, and popular structure analysis revealed that all 60 samples clustered into two major groups that were consistent with their geographical origins. This study provided a batch of highly polymorphic EST-SSR molecular markers that were developed via transcriptome sequencing. These markers will be of great significance for the study of the genetic diversity and evolutionary history of C. macrophyllum and other Chrysosplenium species.

Résumé :
Abstract— Erythroxylum macrophyllum is a morphologically variable and widely distributed species complex in Central and South America with several sub-specific taxa and numerous species included in its synonymy. A single variety grows in the Colombo-Venezuelan savanna region which can be distinguished from the rest of the E. macrophyllum complex by the size of leaves, cataphyll and stipule characteristics, and shape of calyx lobes. A molecular phylogeny reconstructed from 519 nuclear genes also reveals that the savanna variety is more closely related to E. acuminatum and E. pauciflorum than E. macrophyllum. This phylogenomic evidence also suggests Erythroxylum sect. Macrocalyx, to which E. macrophyllum belongs, is a polyphyletic taxonomic section. We thus propose elevating this variety to specific status, as Erythroxylum savannarum. We provide an updated taxonomic description, information about its habitat and distribution, and justify its informal IUCN categorization of Near Threatened (NT).

Résumé :
Studies of the foliar epidermal morphology in four species of Chlorophytum; C. orchidastrum, C. bichetii, C. stenopetalum and C. macrophyllum revealed the presence of stomata on both sides of the leaves (amphistomatic stomata distribution). In C. orchidastrum, few stomata are present on the adaxial surfaces. Stomata type has no diagnostic importance as all the species studied have tetracytic stomata. Stomata index (<10%) on the adaxial surface in C. orchidastrum easily distinguished the species from others. In C. bichetii and C. macrophyllum stomata index (<50%) was recorded while stomata index (>50%) was recorded for C. stenopetalum on the adaxial surface. Stomata index on the abaxial surface also shows that fewer stomata occur in C. macrophyllum compared with C. stenopetalum. The studies also revealed smooth leaf margin for C. orchidastrum. Papillea out growth were observed on the leaf margin of C. stenopetalum and C. macrophyllum, Papillea projections were however more pronounced in C. bichetii. Leaf epidermal character is hereby indicated as an important tool in delimiting species in the genus Chlorophytum. Keywords: Chlorophytum, stomata, epidermal cells, anatomy, foliar morphology.

Résumé :
Commercially available Acer saccharum cultivars, and some closely related species accessions (floridanum, leucoderme, macrophyllum, and nigrum `Greencolumn'), were established as 10 single-plant replications in a cultivar trial at the TSU–NCRS in 1993 and Spring 1994. Plants were regularly fertilized and drip irrigation was begun Summer 1993. Growth data were recorded each fall and height and caliper increment calculated for the 1994 season. In the group with most height growth were: `Bonfire', `Majesty', nigrum `Greencolumn', leucoderme, `Sweet Shadow', `Fairview', and macrophyllum. These, except for `Fairview' and macrophyllum, differed significantly from a group of seven slower growing cultivars. With some exceptions, cultivars with the most height growth tended to have the most caliper growth, while those with the least height growth tended to have the least caliper growth. Data will also be presented on insect and disease ratings.

Terpene compounds of Tanacetum macrophyllum as 1) essential oils, obtained by hydrodistillation (HD), 2) essential oil extracts, obtained by simultaneous hydrodistillation and extraction (SDE) and 3) volatiles, obtained by Static Headspace GC-MS analysis (HS) were processed. Monoterpenes were the most dominant (49.2%, 49.5% and 90.4%, respectively). Profiles of essential oils obtained by HD and SD were quite similar, with oxygenated monoterpenes (39.3% and 39.4%) being the most abundant. In HS volatiles oxygenated monoterpenes also dominated (57.4%). Total sesquiterpenes were abundant in HD and SDE volatiles (38.2% and 39.2%, resp.), where sesquiterpene hydrocarbons were prevalent (27.3% and 28.7%, resp.). Germacrene D was dominant in HD and SDE oils (22.0% and 23.3%, resp.) and 1,8-cineole in HS volatiles (34.3%). To our knowledge, this is the first use of Headspace technique on T. macrophyllum. Furthermore, this is the first comparison of different techniques of volatile extraction in T. macrophyllum.

AbstractIn this study, the anatomy and trichome micromorphology ofTanacetum macrophyllum(Waldst.& Kit.) Schultz,T. parthenium(L.) Schultz,T. poteriifolium(Ledeb.) Grierson andT. vulgareL. were examined by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Some anatomical characters such as presence of secretory cavities and pith in root and mesophyll type in leaf provide information of taxonomical significance. In addition, the existence of a parenchymatic layer, which consists of elongated parenchymatic cells in the stem ofT. macrophyllum,is a distinguishing character. The results obtained from scanning electron microscope studies showed that trichome micromorphology varies among examined taxa. InT. macrophyllum, the eglandular and glandular trichomes especially on disc florets, ligulate florets and cypselas are more sparse, whereas disc florets and cypselas of the other taxa are covered with abundant glandular trichomes. Additionally,T. poteriifoliumandT. partheniumhas a distinct distribution of glandular trichomes forming in a row across the entire cypsela surface.

In Canada, Pacific Rhododendron (Rhododendron macrophyllum) is restricted to the Skagit River drainage and southeastern Vancouver Island in southwestern British Columbia. These populations represent the northern limits of the species, which ranges south to northern California. In British Columbia, Rhododendron macrophyllum is usually associated with coniferous forests. Until recently this species was considered to be rare. Results of this study indicate that the populations in the Skagit River watershed are large, extensive and mostly contained in protected areas, thus the species is not considered to be at risk in Canada at this time.

Résumé :
We conducted morphological and molecular analyses to describe a new species of Piperaceae, Piper semi-transparens, which was observed in Hainan, Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces, China. Detailed morphological comparisons between the newly discovered species and other members of Piper indicate that Piper semi-transparens is similar to P. bonii and P. bonii var. macrophyllum, from which it differs in having glabrous leaf blades; stem densely short and unbranched pubescent when young, glabrous when mature; veins 5(–7); stamens 2; stigmas 3, rarely 4; spikes color white when mature; floral bracts glabrous; pericarp white and semi-transparent. Molecular analyses based on the ITS marker of nuclear ribosomal DNA strongly support that P. semi-transparens is a new species in the genus Piper, most closely related to P. bonii and P. bonii var. macrophyllum.

Résumé :
Secondary xylem characteristics were compared in four species of Phoradendron Nutt. (Viscaceae) native to California. All have extremely short, thick-walled vessel elements with simple perforation plates. They also share high vessel density, radial vessel arrangement, thick-walled fibres, and multiseriate, heterocellular rays. The fibres show considerable intrusive growth. Features of the vessel elements (i.e. vessel dimensions, arrangement, type of wall sculpturing) and calcium oxalate crystals in the ray parenchyma cells are useful diagnostic traits to separate species. Grooved vessel walls are shared by the morphologically similar P. villosum and P. macrophyllum. Differences between these two species may reflect contrasting drought response strategies pursued by respective hosts. Vulnerability and mesomorphy ratios of the wood of P. californicum are higher than those of P. pauciflorum and P. macrophyllum. Phoradendron pauciflorum has the most xeromorphic wood of the four species studied.

Résumé :
O avanço do agronegócio devido à criação do projeto MATOPIBA, tem gerado vários problemas ambientais e sociais no sul do Piauí, incluindo o desmatamento. ABSTRACT The growth of agribusiness due to the creation of the MATOPIBA project has resulted in several environmental and social problems in southern Piauí, including deforestation. The aim of this work was to select Cenostigma macrophyllum matrix trees in forest remnants in the southwest of Piaui to support the acquisition of quality seeds, highlighting the role of peasants in the conservation of the diversity of these fragments. A qualitative data research was conducted, addressing the importance of conserving native vegetation, including the individuals directly involved in the conservation of the studied areas. In the quantitative research we started with a prior floristic survey in the Parabatins community, Currais-PI. The minimum viable population (VMP) and effective population size (Ne) were calculated for 18 selected matrix trees. C. macrophyllum presented (Ne) below the recommended and does not have an VMP to remain in the short or long term in the fragment; however, we consider that the sampling of the floristic survey is insufficient. We emphasize the importance of the traditional communities’ lifestyles for the conservation of the forest fragment studied. Keywords: Livelihoods, Minimum Viable Population, Effective Population Size, Peasant.

Résumé :
Abstract Bryophytes generally have broad geographical ranges that suggest high dispersal ability. The aim of this study was to test hypotheses about dispersal limitation, as indicated by isolation by distance, in four spore-producing species of the moss genus Sphagnum (Sphagnum carolinianum, Sphagnum missouricum, Sphagnum macrophyllum and Sphagnum pylaesii) and to assess whether plants in the southern USA harbour high levels of unique alleles and/or other indicators of exceptional genetic diversity. Isolation by distance was detected in all four species, but regional patterns of genetic structure were very species specific. Northern and southern genotype groups were detected in S. carolinianum and S. missouricum, but in S. pylaesii plants from the Adirondack Mountains of New York were genetically distinct from others to the north and south. One species, S. macrophyllum, exhibited differentiation between northern and southern genetic groups that appeared to reflect more ancient phylogenetic diversification.

Résumé :
Natural populations of bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum Pursh) trees contain, at low frequency, individuals with stems that have attractive and valuable wavy grain in the wood. To maintain the genotype of these individuals, vegetative propagation is desired. To enable propagation from the limited amount of plant tissue that is often available, an in vitro micropropagation procedure was developed. A mix of wild trees was used as source material to generate a procedure that is genotype unspecific. Among tested basal media, DKW medium resulted in the highest frequency of growing shoots. For multiplication of shoots, removal of the apex of shoot explants was instrumental, presumably because this treatment broke a strong apical dominance in this species. Of tested hormone and hormone combinations, 0.1 μM thidiazuron produced the best results with an average of 3.2 axillary shoots per explant with an average of 3.7 nodes per axillary shoot after 1 month. Although rooting did not require hormone treatment, a 68% frequency of rooting was obtained on ½ MS supplemented with 1 μM IBA, 27% higher than hormone-free media. Taken together, we have developed a procedure for propagation of bigleaf maple from a limited amount of tissues that can be used to multiply various genotypes of interest.

Résumé :
Members of Calophyllum (Calophyllaceae) are commonly used as herbal medicine in Indonesia from the beginning of civilization. Due to their tremendous potential as a source for pharmaceutical industry, we selected 11 Calophyllum species for the current anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial studies, namely, Calophyllum euryphyllum, C. bicolor, C. flavoramulum, C incrassaptum, C. lowei, C. macrophyllum, C. nodosum, C. soulattri, C. tetrapterum, C. teysmannii, and C. tomentosum. The methods include Calophyllum stem bark extraction and separation into n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and butanol fractions, followed by the antioxidant analysis using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging) and the anti-bacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The results showed that n-hexane fraction of C. soulattri exhibited the best anti-oxidant activity (IC50 = 2.2 µg/m). This study also showed that a xanthone compound isolated from C. macrophyllum, namely, 1,8 - dihydroxy-6 methoxy xanthone exhibited the anti-oxidant activity with IC50 = 1.56 ppm.

Résumé :
Bats are the second most diverse mammalian order worldwide. In the Neotropics, Brazil has one of the greatest bat richness, but species records are still very heterogeneously distributed, especially in Amazonia. Although this biome harbours 76% of Brazil’s bat fauna, basic knowledge on the distribution of Amazonian bats is far from well known, with intensive surveys at only a few sites and many areas without any records. The reduction of those gaps will improve the understanding of the bats’ distribution, with implications for management and conservation. Here we review the distribution of Trinycteris nicefori, Lionycteris spurrelli, Macrophyllum macrophyllum, and Dasypterus ega in the Brazilian Amazonia, presenting several new records for the region based both on literature review and on our own unpublished data. Our study contributes to the knowledge of the geographic distribution of these species, and the new records presented here help fill a gap in the distribution of bats in the western Brazilian Amazonia.
