Résumé :
The role of container logistics centre as home bases for merchandise transportation has become increasingly important. The container carriers need to select a suitable centre location of transshipment port to meet the requirements of container shipping logistics. In the light of this, the main purpose of this paper is to develop a fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model to evaluate the best selection of transshipment ports for container carriers. At first, some concepts and methods used to develop the proposed model are briefly introduced. The performance values of quantitative and qualitative subcriteria are discussed to evaluate the fuzzy ratings. Then, the ideal and anti-ideal concepts and the modified distance measure method are used in the proposed model. Finally, a step-by-step example is illustrated to study the computational process of the quantitative and qualitative fuzzy MCDM model. The proposed approach has successfully accomplished our goal. In addition, the proposed fuzzy MCDM model can be empirically employed to select the best location of transshipment port for container carriers in the future study.

Résumé :
Unlike the Newsvendor model, a system based on lateral transshipments allows the unsold inventories to be moved from locations with surplus inventory to fulfill more unmet demands at stocked out locations. Both models were thoroughly studied and researches were usually confined to cost minimization or profit maximization. In this paper, the authors proposed a more realistic multiobjective study of both multi-location Transshipment and Newsvendor inventory models. The aggregate cost, the fill rate, and the shared inventory quantity are formulated as conflicting objectives and solved using two reference multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (SPEA2 and NSGA-II). The proposed models take into account the presence of storage capacity constraints. The obtained Pareto fronts revealed interesting information. When transshipments are allowed, both low aggregate cost and high fill rate levels are ensured. The required shared inventory may have an important variability. The considered objective functions are conflicting and very sensitive to local storage capacities.

Résumé :
In two-location inventory systems, unidirectional transshipment policies are considered when an item is not routinely stocked at a location in the system. Unlike the past research in this area which has concentrated on the simple transshipment policies of complete pooling or no pooling, the research presented in this thesis endeavors to develop an understanding of a more general class of transshipment policy. The research considers two major approaches: a decomposition approach, in which the two-location system is decomposed into a system with independent locations, and Markov decision process approach. For the decomposition approach, the transshipment policy is restricted to the class of holdout transshipment policy. The first attempt to develop a decomposition approach assumes that transshipment between the locations occurs at a constant rate in order to decompose the system into two independent locations with constant demand rates. The second attempt modifies the assumption of constant rate of transshipment to take account of local inventory levels to decompose the system into two independent locations with non-constant demand rates. In the final attempt, the assumption of constant rate of transshipment is further modified to model more closely the location providing transshipments. Again the system is decomposed into two independent locations with non-constant demand rates. For each attempt, standard techniques are applied to derive explicit expressions for the average cost rate, and an iterative solution method is developed to find an optimal holdout transshipment policy. Computational results show that these approaches can provide some insights into the performance of the original system. A semi-Markov decision model of the system is developed under the assumption of exponential lead time rather than fixed lead time. This model is later extended to the case of phase-type distribution for lead time. The semi-Markov decision process allows more general transshipment policies, but is computationally more demanding. Implicit expressions for the average cost rate are derived from the optimality equation for dynamic programming models. Computational results illustrate insights into the management of the two-location system that can be gained from this approach.

Transsipment policy is a means of sharing stock. When the retailer is running out of stock, they can transship (get the goods) from the retailers nearby who have enough stock and re-distribute the stock of the system. This research is aiming to the customer whose demand is multi stock station of random status and is building the best stock pattern of minimized total cost system to decide order-up-to level of retailers. The retailers follow the pattern of random status to transship among different retailing locations. But concerning the geographic location, the retailers will only allow to transship in the same area. The solver algorithm is using Monte Carlo sampling approximations. The mechanism of improvement is using the gradient of total cost to update the order-up-to level on each generation. In the sensitivity analysis, when the scale of changes of demand is small, as the scales of -25% changes of the average order-up-to level are better than the scales of +25% changes in all systems, the total cost is higher. When the scales of changes of demand is increased in transshipment policy, the total cost is to be close in the scales of -25% and +25% changes of the average order-up-to level. It represents the inventory level is either higher or lower adjust inventory level by using transshipment policy to reduce total cost of the systems when some retailers faced shortage of stock or excess of stock.

As business competition becomes ever fierce, circulation efficiency of merchandises is now one of the media to boost competitive advantages to enterprises. Freight transshipment center is the most important tool to achieve this goal. The sky-high cost to establish a freight transshipment center impeded medium to small enterprises from building and managing one independently. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and manage freight transshipment centers with the joint efforts of the government and private businesses, so that the government authorities and private resources can be integrated. The improvement on commodity circulation efficiency could strengthen and competitiveness of enterprises, and in turn, lift up the national competitiveness. The primary job in the development of freight transshipment center is the decision of location. The purpose of this study is to establish a set of rational and feasible criteria for location choice of freight transshipment center to serve as a guideline to related bureaus. Based on literature review and planning experience, this study generalized the factors that may affect the location choice of freight transshipment center, and evaluate the criteria structure based on those factors. Then the study used two-step questionnaire, first by screening important criteria with Delphi Method, then obtained the weights on each criterion based on Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Lastly, it used empirical study. Since thorough understanding of each site option was required on location choice, other the concurrent proceeding of questionnaire and appraisal of alternatives, this study involved in the appraisal of the site options, and invited professionals who were involved in the planning of the site options and had sufficient knowledge on the site options in the evaluation process. The results were very close to the planning and policies on the freight transshipment center to be promoted by the government. Therefore, the criteria and procedures on location choice are proven valid, and could be used as a guideline to the government bureaus and private enterprises in location choice of freight transshipment center.

In recent years, companies have broadened their competitions in different directions such as distribution, customer service, and retailing. Therefore, different retailing formats appear in the market increasingly and the convenient store becomes one important format among them. To achieve better performance of the logistic network, selecting suitable convenient store location is a pertinent decision for companies. In the selection of convenient store locations, optimal facility locations with consideration of consumers’ behavior and competition can be achieved using mathematical programming. However, transshipment cost is assumed to be the summation of material flow time distance between each convenient store and distribution center in these model that did not perceive the impact of vehicle routing in shipping product from distribution centers to convenient stores in reality. Hence, this research develops a three-echelon logistic model with the inclusions of competition, consumers’ behavior, and vehicle routing to determine the optimal convenient store location and transshipment route. The results show that the inclusions of competition and vehicle routing will have significant influences on achieving optimal convenient store location.

Résumé :
Successful implementation of food supply chains in improving the productivity and operational efficiency by some companies made many other firms and researchers courteous about this fast developing field. For successful strategies, organizations in agri-food business are aiming to bring all its stakeholders in close cooperation. The agri-food supply chain aims at optimal warehousing and location design, supply-demand synchronization, checking price variations and ultimately minimizing waste and improving productivity at every stage leveraging Information Technology (IT). This research reviews the supply chain status in agri-food sector, categorizes available literature, assesses the influential articles, and proposes the holistic framework in agri-food supply chain. From the literature review, it is observed that the research articles have addressed agri-food supply chain up to a certain point and confined to the apt ideas of supply projections, demand projections, supply-demand disparity, traceability, collaborations etc. There is a need for extensive research to reconsider warehouse and location design, supply-demand projections and gap analysis, transshipment strategies and traceability in an integrated manner. The present study proposes holistic framework addressing the issues of supply-demand synchronization, warehouse design, transportation optimization, traceability, vertical integration and farmer’s credit facility.

Résumé :
Does the built environment affect how often and how far people drive or walk or when they will take the bus or the train? If so, how? A lively, expanding literature continues to investigate the potential for causal links between urban design and travel behavior, yet there remain many gaps and considerable disagreement. Our purpose here is mainly to identify what past research has to say on these questions. We also try to explain why these studies reach different conclusions and how and where this work might be usefully improved. The first, and perhaps best-known, group of studies on this topic investigates how travel behavior and travel investment affect land use. There is also a long if more recent practice of viewing these links from the opposite direction; that is, how does land use influence urban travel? We consider this second question in more detail following a brief review of the first. Though not our focus, most questions about land-use/transportation links over the past century concern the influence of transportation infrastructure on development patterns. Analysts ask how highways and mass transit contribute to decentralization trends, how they affect the local balance of jobs and housing, or how they affect the pattern of commercial investment (see, e.g., the reviews in Gómez-Ibáñez, 1985b; Giuliano, 1989, 1991, 1995a, 1995b; Cervero and Landis, 1995). The basic idea is this: People choose their homes and locate their businesses based in part on their proximity to work, other potential destinations, and the markets for their products and labor generally (see, e.g., Von Thunen, 1826; Weber, 1928; Losch, 1954; Alonso, 1964; Muth, 1969; Mills, 1972; Solow, 1973; Fujita, 1989; Anas, Arnott, and Small, 1997). That is, the cost of transporting people and things over space depends on the distances and resources required. Once these costs are fixed, perhaps by the establishment of a central downtown or transshipment point, the price of land at each location is determined by demand. This in turn is determined, again in part, by how much money one has left after accounting for the transportation costs associated with that location.
