Résumé :
This paper examines how national literary histories written in the twentieth century define medieval Serbian poetry. Grounded in the canon of Byzantine liturgical poetry and dedicated to cult practice, hymnography often did not conform to modern poetic principles, originality, and metrical form. Formalist approaches to poetry shaped the anthologies of Serbian medieval literature published in Yugoslavia in the 1960s. The editors transformed sequences from narrative prose into poetic texts, thus creating medieval poems. These cases draw attention to the importance of textual criticism and the social context in defining medieval literary genres. Exploring hymnography as a linguistic and liturgical event - a poem sung to an engaged audience - introduces new perspectives on its interpretation.

Résumé :
Eliot, an important poet, playwright, and literary critic of the nineteenth century in the United States, was the founder of Western modernism. He pioneered the modern poetic criticism. His practice of modernist poetry is the transition from traditionalist poetics to modernist poetics in the 20th century. His famous poetics theory declaration “Tradition and the Individual Talent” is an immortal classic in the field of poetics theory, in which he proposed the concept of “Traditional,” the theory of “Impersonal” poetry, “Objective Correlative,” and so on. All had a profound influence on the 20th-century poetry creation. This paper aims to analyze and discuss the important “Impersonal” theory from the three aspects of its connotation, the relationship between “Personality” and its intertextuality with New Criticism, so as to further understand Eliot’s poetic concepts.

Clerical critics analyzed the respective works from the religious and moral point of view, and modern literary scholars do not always fully take this into account.

The book written by an international team of scholars and edited by B. Brazeau explores literary criticism and reception of Aristotle's «Poetics» in early modern Italy. Revisiting the «intellectual history» of Renaissance poetic studies written by Bernard Weinberg in 1960-s, the contributors find its own place whithin the 2000-years long tradition of translations, commentaries and polemic treatises. The authors apply new methods from book history, translation studies, history of emotions and classical reception to early modern Italian texts, placing them in dialogue with 20th-century literary theory, and thus map out avenues for future study.

Résumé :
An overview of scientific and critical works devoted to the study of Soviet uncensored poetry as a historical and literary phenomenon in general and the work of its key personalities, in particular is presented in the article. The relevance of the work is due to the lack of study of this segment of Russian literary criticism of the 20th century and the need to systematize the accumulated experience of evaluating and interpreting underground poetic culture in order to identify promising directions for its further scientific development. The article focuses, first, on the samizdat criticism of the uncensored poets of the 1980s. Such features of their artistic writing as culture-centricity, impersonality, autonomy of poetry due to the rejection of the “Aristotelian mimesis” and the reorientation of the poetic utterance to “the language itself”, etc. are characterized. Secondly, the author considers the formation in the scientific-critical discourse of the postmodernist concept of the development of Russian literature, in the light of which such underground style movements as “metarealism” and “conceptualism” are presented as the most representative phenomena of poetic postmodernism. Thirdly, it is indicated that in literary criticism of the 2000s-2010s, a number of scientific concepts were proposed that limit the research field of application of postmodern theory to Russian poetry of the second half of the 20th century (“neomodernism”, “transavant-garde”, “post-realism”). Fourth, it is determined that the development of the legacy of the Soviet poetic underground in modern literary science occurs primarily from the standpoint of a systematic study of the poetics and axiology of the work of nonconformist poets and the identification of the genetic links of their poetry with the Russian modernist and avant-garde tradition of the early 20th century.

Lukaszewicz, Marta. « Reception of Religious Themes in Nikolai Leskov's Works at the Turn of the 20th Century ». Vestnik Tomskogo gosudarstvennogo universiteta, no 468 (2021) : 34–43. http://dx.doi.org/10.17223/15617793/468/4.

Résumé :
The article aims to consider tendencies predominating in literary criticism at the turn of the 20th century in its reception of religious issues in Nikolai Leskov's works, to identify the peculiarities of their understanding by representatives of diverse groups and trends, to examine their influence on changes in Leskov's literary reputation. The role of the spiritual atmosphere of the Silver Age in changing attitudes towards Leskov's legacy is mentioned, as well as the consequences of the duality of his reception formed at that time. The research materials consists of various works of literary criticism (articles, notes, reviews) written and published in Russia between 1895 and 1917. They are studied using the methods of the thematic, discourse and comparative analysis of the text. The research demonstrated that the comprehension of Leskov's legacy, which began at the end of the writer's life, took place in the critical period of the coexistence of realism and symbolism in literature, and sociological and modernist trends in criticism. Leskov's literary works attracted mainly critics of the sociological trend, who emphasized the writer's evolution from a photographic depiction of Russian Orthodox clergymen's everyday life to the finding of peace, rational and moral understanding of religiosity akin to Protestantism and Leo Tolstoy's teaching. The approach of the less numerous modernist critics was different as they appreciated Leskov's depiction of the mystical depths of Orthodoxy, his penetration into the secrets of the popular faith and ability to juxtapose them with the mundane life. They evaluated the late works of the writer as less interesting, excessively rationalistic and moralising. Thus, the analysis of literary reviews of the turn of the 20th century allows making a conclusion about a strong influence of the artistic principles of the two main literary movements of the epoch, and critics' desire to incorporate Leskov into the modern context, thereby updating his legacy. Such a possibility is, in particular, the result of Leskov's ideological evolution and of the peculiarity of his manner of writing, with its elusive author's position, which still makes it feasible to formulate contradictory assessments of his works and personal religiosity, varying between a ‘heretic' and ‘profoundly Orthodox'. In addition, the author observed the fundamental importance of the category of literary reputation and noted the fact of transition from assessing the personality and socio-political stance of the author to evaluating his artistic output. It was also due to the beginning of the ‘linguistic turn' of the literary critics of the time, which resulted in the reception of Leskov's works becoming more complex and multifaceted. The contradictory assessment of his works and, in particular, their religious component, still continue to shape the position of many contemporary researchers.

Résumé :
The aim of this research is to examine the narrative representation of epidemics in the 20th century U.S. literature, using the methods of narratological analysis and receptive aesthetics. The study relies on the corpus of the 20th century U.S. novels: Scarlet Plague (1912) by Jack London, Earth Abides (1949) by George R. Stewart, I am Legend (1954) by Richard Matheson, The Stand (1978) by Stephen King, Contagion (1996) by Robin Cook, and Darwin’s Radio (1999) by Greg Bear. The aspects of epidemic representation in fiction have been studied using modern literary criticism research in the areas of narratology and receptive aesthetics, which determines the relevance of the present paper. The motif is rooted in the 19th-century Romantic literature (E.A. Poe’s fiction); it acquires further extensive development in the 20th century science fiction, horror, post-apocalyptic (dystopian) and contemporary medical thriller genres. In the second half of the 20th century, by using the motifs of epidemic and pandemic, the writers contemplate upon the issues of science, its capacities, limitations and potential hazards. In the frame of examined novels, the pandemic topos serves as a tool for «reloading» the human population on earth, «resetting» humanity and bringing it back ad fonts. It also acts as a reminder about the dangers of negligence and misuse of research advances. In such a manner, the authors caution the readers against the potential dangers of the 20th-century advances. In the light of COVID-19 pandemic, the study of the literary depiction of this motif in national literatures and different historical periods becomes especially relevant, because it allows us to re-consider this phenomenon and thus to try to help the mankind to learn one's lesson and perhaps avoid similar calamities in the future.

Résumé :
The publication highlights the period of cooperation between the music and literary critic, translator and writer Boris Fedorovich Schloezer with the critical and bibliographic department of the St. Petersburg “political, social and literary” liberal newspaper “Birzhevye Vedomosti”, which from the middle of 1916 was headed by A.L. Volynsky. In 1916 Schloezer published reviews of a collection of articles by V.I. Ivanov “Furrows and Boundaries”, on the books of N.A. Berdyaev “The Meaning of Creativity (The Experience of Justifying Man)” and S.L. Frank “The Subject of Knowledge”. If the works of Berdyaev and Ivanov provoked criticism of the author of the reviews, the book of Frank (along with the works of N.O. Lossky (“Justification of Intuitionism”, “Introduction to Philosophy”) and P.B. Vysheslavtsev (“Ethics of Fichte”)), according to Schloezer, testifies to a new trend in Russian philosophy – a turn towards ontology and the revival of metaphysics. In addition to the published articles this publication presents a response to Ivanov’s collection “Native and Universal” and the article “Russian Philosophical Thought”, written by Schloezer in 1917–1918. They, apparently, never appeared on the pages of the newspaper, but were preserved in the Volynsky archive (RSALA, fund 95). Schloezer’s article on modern Russian philosophy is a review of the latest philosophical literature: S.L. Frank’s “Man’s Soul”, N.O. Lossky’s “The World as an Organic Whole”, E.N. Trubetskoy’s “Metaphysical Assumptions of Cognition”, I.A. Ilyin’s “Philosophy of Hegel as the Doctrine of the Concreteness of God and Humanity”, as well as the collection “Thought and Word” edited by G.G. Shpet. The publication sheds light on the un known pages of Schloezer’s intellectual biography.

Résumé :
The intention of this article is to present the results of a collective scientific research project in the theory of literature that was carried out in a period of more than ten years (2011–2022) on the topic “Dialogism of the literary work”. These results determined another collective contribution in the theory of literary criticism. By the notion of “scientific project” we understand the PhD thesis (Aliona Grati) and other four doctoral theses (Oxana Popa, Elisaveta Iovu-Macari, Diana Dementieva, Rodica Gotca), which were carried out in the same research direction and a collective monograph. The objective of this vast project was to present the development directions of dialogic theory/aesthetics and dialogism that Mikhail Bakhtin imposed on the international circuit. The scientist insisted on the idea that the literary work is the aesthetic area for the full unfolding of dialogic relationships, thus foreshadowing a paradigm in the research of 20th century literature. The doctoral theses presented how dialogic theory was approached within some theoretical schools and systems, as well as by some brand personalities. These researches constituted pretexts for the theorization of five new models of literary criticism that grew from the stem of dialogism: Dialogic, Imagology, Sociocriticism, Criticism oriented towards the reader, Ergocriticism. They aim at modern, complex and layered literary works that represent the existence and the world with human voices in dialogue, with texts in relation and with systems in relation.

Résumé :
Literature, like other art forms, has always served an instrument for resistance, which through various discursive strategies responds to manifestations of oppression, despotism and dogmatism of various kinds. Above all, 20th century literary production — a century that witnessed a proliferation of dictatorships and authoritarian regimes, armed conflicts, wars and genocides, despite humanity's extraordinary progress in multiple areas — was marked by a strong sense of social, cultural or political engagement, which also extends to literary creation in the 21st century. Also in the Portuguese-speaking countries, one of the recurrent themes in modern and contemporary literary production has been the criticism towards the arbitrariness by authoritarian governments, as is the case of the Salazar regime — which stifled Portuguese society for over forty years and prolonged colonial exploitation in Africa — and by the dictatorial regimes established in the second half of the last century in Brazil and other Latin American countries. The aim of this dossier is to present some expressions of critical thinking on the literary production that deals with this subject. Therefore, eight studies devoted to the analysis of works by Portuguese and Brazilian authors who, at different times and through different forms of expression, reacted against authoritarian tendencies in Lusophone societies are gathered here.

Résumé :
In the 80s and 90s of the 20th century, womens literature in Russia began to rapidly develop and become recognized as a special phenomenon - for the first time after the last turn of the epoch: Soviet literature was rarely considered in Russian literary criticism from a gender point of view. The creativity of modern women writers became a vivid phenomenon in the context of the Russian literary process, revealed a unique female view of many socio-psychological problems, and in its own way reflected the historical turning point experienced by Russian society. In China, traditionally sensitive to Russian culture, the growth of female literature in Russia was noted almost immediately, and Chinese scientists have so far achieved considerable results in studying the specifics of themes, plots, typology of heroes, artistic styles, and the language of Russian female literature. This article is aimed at summarizing the current state of research on the work of Russian writers in China. It presents both generalizing works and materials devoted to individual writers personalities (L. Petrushevskaya, T. Tolstaya, L. Ulitskaya).

Résumé :
The paper offers to extend the historical time frame of modern cross-media studies formation. The start of this research direction dates not from the 1950-60s, as it is usually considered to be, but from the early 20th century, the ‘synthesis epoch’. Development of neosyncretism was accompanied by creating bright theories in aesthetics and art criticism and promoting the concept of arts’ interaction by the humanities. Three scholars — H. Wolfin, M. Dessoir, and A. Warburg were the pioneers of the modern interdisciplinary research field. The author considers that the range of influences on the cross-media studies in literary criticism should be broadened with the works of philosophers and art critics who started to use the cross-media strategies (not the term itself) when analyzing the works of literature and arts. The leading role belonged to the Iconology school (E. Panofsky, R. Wittkower, E. Gombrich et al.). Their methods were based on applying tools of various disciplines. In the first place, they took into account connections between literature and visual arts. Henceforth, philology interpolated the iconological method into visual and comparative studies. One of the contemporary leading cross-media researchers, W. J. T. Mitchell, named his first book “Iconology: Image, Text, Ideology” (1986). In the middle of the 20th century, philosophy had a considerable influence on the cross-media research formation. In particular, literary critics referred to phenomenology (the works by M. Dufrenne, R. Ingarden. M. Merleau-Ponty) and actualized the analysis of interacting arts once more. A visual turn in culture caused growing attention to the issues of apperceptive cross-sensual experience. The newest works in the fields of perception psychology, gestalt psychology, neurolinguistics, and neurophysiology also support the general cross-media theory. It is possible that, due to the mutual influences of sciences, a uniform platform for studying syncretic phenomena will be created.

Résumé :
The article is of an overview nature and is devoted to the writings by Yasutaka Tsutsui in the context of formation and development of the science fiction genre in the Japanese literature of the second half of the 20th century. It traces the origins of this genre in Japanese folklore and traditional literature, briefly examines the generally accepted classification of four generations of Japanese science fiction writers and analyzes stages of the writer's creative development as one of the three SF masters in modern Japan. The article suggests identifying four periods in Tsutsui Yasutaki's creative career: experimentation on the verge of absurdity, black humor, and social satire in the 60's of the 20th century, transition to the pure literature in the 70's, interest in metafiction in the 80's and cyber fiction in the 90's, reflecting the latest trends in the Japanese literature of the second half of the last century. Trying to comprehend and reflect the crisis phenomena of Japanese reality in the second half of the 20th century, the writer openly exposes the shortcomings of modern society – spiritual impoverishment, prosperity of consumerism, loss of high ideals and values, etc. In his early science fiction works, elements of social criticism and increased attention to the inner world of modern man and his social nature can be often observed. Later metafiction is full of various deconstructivist techniques: fragmentation, fabulation, and distortion of time – which makes them a valuable source for understanding trends in the Japanese postmodernism in general and metafiction in particular. Special attention should be paid to the author's approach to writing – in interactive communication with interested internet readers, which opens new horizons for artistic creativity and creation of a literary text.

Résumé :
Abstract The article examines the explicit and implicit role that Kierkegaard played in the cultural criticism developed in the literary circle of the Danish journal Heretica (1948 – 1954). The cultural criticism of Kierkegaard and eminent Danish post-war authors (Martin A. Hansen, Vilhem Grønbech, Bjørn Poulsen, Tage Skou-Hansen and Ole Wivel) is contextualized in the tradition of Western cultural criticism. An analysis of central concepts such as crisis, rationality, spirit and reflection as well as alienation, individuality and community, demonstrates the original contributions these authors make to the modern understanding of culture. Furthermore, the article addresses the reservations that some of the Heretica- authors had towards Kierkegaard. The accusation of solipsism, however, turns out to be unwarranted. Rather, it becomes clear that Kierkegaard’s emphasis on the individual, like the post-war authors’ critique of fascism, is directed against the power of the masses and the increasing bureaucratization of life. Finally, Kierkegaard as well as the 20th century authors depict neighbor love as decisive for a post-restitutive, forward-oriented way out of a severe cultural crisis.

The author summarizes Blake studies of the 21st century. The beginning of the modern era of Blake studies can be considered with the paradigm of deconstruction. At the end of the 20th century, synthetic analysis took a special place in Blake studies, when Blake’s illuminated books were studied as an inseparable unity of verbal and visual. Blake’s legacy has undergone a significant evolution related to deconstruction and postmodern approaches, and linguistic research. The development of traditional areas of research, such as psychoanalysis, textual criticism of manuscripts, religious and mystical allusions, and comparative studies is also traced. Postmodernism, which owes much to the Romanticism (i.e. the concept of irony, fragmentation, the category of the exalted, the original lonely hero), brought new features to Blake studies and greatly contributed to its approval among canonical authors of the Romanticism. In modern Blake studies, such areas as gender studies, postcolonial studies, studies in digital reality environments are most actively developing. Starting from the 2000s, the main direction in Blake studies has become reception, that is, the cultural influence of Blake’s writings on later culture, including the culture of other countries: poetry, literature, music and cinema. Each new era reveals fundamentally similar features and adds meanings to Blake: this process is going from symbolism and psychoanalysis to the present day.

Résumé :
The article, which is historical and scientific by character, presents the current humanitarian issues of professional epistolary communication of an outstanding Russian literary critic, Doctor of Philology, Professor B. F. Egorov (1926–2020) with fellow literary critics. The main directions of scientist’s active and versatile practices are considered on the grounds of his published letters and some letters to him in 1998–2020. The article focuses on professional communication and interaction between Ukrainian and Russian literary critics in the complex modern socio-historical and political conditions of interstate relations. The letters are published for the first time and are accompanied by the necessary historical and cultural comments and bibliographic notes. The material contained in them is important not only for the history of Russian and East Slavic literary criticism of the 20th century, but also it is relevant in terms of the prospects of academic studies of literature and the development of productive communication between scholars studying fiction in order to perform the main cultural function of literary studies.

Wu Mi, a believer in humanism, and student of Irving Babbitt, loved traditional Eastern and Western cultures and advocated the “continuity and convergence” of literature. This is an ideology of fair and just treatment of the different cultures of the East and the West, externally opposing drastic cultural changes but internally pursuing the continuity of ancient and modern culture and the integration of Eastern and Western cultures. Due to its fierce criticism of “old literature” in the New Culture Movement, Wu Mi’s literary philosophy was considered old-fashioned and anachronistic at the beginning of the 20th century. On the contrary, Wu Mi had no bias toward the literature of the past and present, East and West, which is a significant step toward understanding in culture and its development, during turbulent and chaotic times.

Résumé :
The vast majority of current scientific research devoted to the phenomenon of solitude is performed within the framework of psychology, sociology, and literary criticism. However, these inquiries deal with specific manifestations of the multidimensional phenomenon of solitude, eliminating its nature and fundamental philosophical and anthropological essence, which is hidden behind secondary layers of empirics. The task of this investigation is to consider the phenomenon of solitude among representatives of the world’s philosophical thought of modern times, in whose teachings it has received the fullest expression, in particular among representatives of existentialism, philosophy of life, phenomenology, and psychodynamic theory, including K. Jaspers, N. Berdyaev, M. Buber, M. Heidegger, E. Levinas. Despite the noticeable outburst of engagement with the phenomenon of solitude in the philosophy in the mid 19th – mid 20th centuries, interest in it did not disappear, as evidenced by current works designed to bridge the gap identified by predecessors. Despite the differences in views on the nature of solitude and its impact on the personality, as well as on the moment when a person encounters their solitude, these thinkers have something in common – they all necessarily consider solitude through the lens of the Other (be it a specific individual or a whole society) and recognize it a necessary condition for both true knowledge of things and self-knowledge. Regarding the discrepancies in views on solitude, they may be caused by the “terminological chaos” that still prevails when considering this issue. The terms “seclusion”, “alienation”, “isolation”, “loneliness”, and actually “solitude” are used to denote various manifestations of this phenomenon, often without distinguishing them; classifications of solitude are built through descriptive definitions. The lack of clarity should be overcome by distinguishing related but different concepts and developing a unified approach to the relationship between the essence of the concept and its various lexical expressions. Such a clarification is achieved in this article by identifying commonalities and indicating differences in the works of modern philosophers, who were most interested in the phenomenon of solitude, assigning it an important place in their own philosophical explorations.

Résumé :
Since one of the main characteristics of the science fiction genre is the modelling of future societies, often from the safe distance perspective drawing quite visible parallels with those of the present world, the discussion about political and social topics has been an integral part of the genre since the beginnings. Moreover, since science fiction, especially regarding the subgenre of utopia, allegorically projects a particular ideology in an imaginary world, certain propaganda was also frequent compound in the genre works. These factors were largely responsible for the fact that some political regimes, especially those of the 20th century, made direct and indirect use of science fiction as a powerful tool of ideological propaganda that helped to turn the thinking of readers, especially young people, in the direction favoured by the regime. Still, it must also be remembered that the presence of political ideas in the science fiction works as well as interpretation of these works has always been quite a complicated matter, and science fiction authors frequently found ways to circumnavigate the limitations set by censorship and include messages unflattering to the regime in their works. The paper provides an insight into the aspects of relationship between science fiction and ideology in contemporary literary theory, turns a particular attention to the practical aspects of these relationships as they formed during the 20th century in the literary space of Soviet regime – discussing original works as well as translations and literary criticism; finally, the paper outlines some topical ideological directions visible in modern science fiction works.

Résumé :
Simone de Beauvoir (1908 - 1986), as the pioneer and founder of feminist literary criticism, her feminist thoughts and Literary theory have had a profound impact on the development of women's movement and feminist literary theory around the world. Beauvoir is “one of the most important women of the 20th century.” His book The Second Sex covers the cultural content of philosophy, history, literature, biology, ancient myths and customs, and discusses the actual women’s situation, status and rights in the historical evolution from Primitive society to modern society. In the book, linguistic theories and methods are applied to define and differentiate gender concepts, and a detailed study is conducted on the shaping and influence of daily life, religion, and taboo language on women’s psychology and consciousness. Exploring the relationship between gender and culture is an important dimension that reflects a conscious awareness of language and culture. Beauvoir’s language research has provided important theoretical inspiration for the development of feminism, especially postmodern feminist criticism, and has a transitional significance that connects the past and the future. This article takes The Second Sex as the research text and conducts a feminist analysis of Beauvoir’s linguistic theory from three aspects: The first part elaborates on feminism by analyzing Beauvoir’s application of linguistic methods and research on multiple linguistic issues, criticizing the traditional patriarchal cultural tradition. The second part compares Woolf’s feminist language views and introduces the different focuses of language research between the two. The third part elaborates on the impact of Beauvoir’s language research on feminist criticism and postmodern feminism.

Résumé :
At the end of the 20th – the beginning of the 21st century there were serious changes in the poetics of drama, defining the strategy of artistic forms and features of artistic consciousness. This gives the right to single out the history of the “new drama” in a separate period of the literary and theatrical process. A new book by the Belarusian researcher S.Ya. Goncharova-Grabovskaya “Modern Russian Dramaturgy (late 20th – early 21st century)” is devoted to generalization and comprehension of this period, which is considered and announced in the presented review. The book examines the main trends in the development of the Russian drama at the turn of the 20-21st centuries: the history of the emergence of the “new drama” movement, aspects of poetics (hero, conflict, chronotope, language), genre-style vector (social drama, documentary drama, monodrama, remake plays, drama of the absurd) – all that defines the specific features of the modern dramaturgical process. The focus is on the plays of famous playwrights, which have been staged in theaters in Russia and Belarus, have received positive reviews in criticism. The peculiarity of the reviewed book is that it analyzes modern Belarusian drama, traces its connection with the Russian. The book includes overview chapters reflecting the genre and style parameters of drama, a list of plays, information about playwrights, control questions and assignments. The scientific and methodological publication under review is expected to be in high demand not only in the philological environment, but also among theater critics and theater historians.

Résumé :
The paper presents a brief history of literary theories that have been used in Lithuania for the last century (1918–2018). Certain general patterns of development are visible in Lithuanian literary studies: movements from positivist (M. Biržiška) to anti-positivist (V. Mykolaitis-Putinas) history and from Marxist history (K. Korsakas) to postmodern New Historicism. The mid-20th century marked the first applications of modern literary theories (first in exile, later among those who stayed in occupied Lithuania). A. J. Greimas became an eminent theoretician in exile, having established a world-famous school of semiotics in Paris. A large number of Lithuanian scholars worked in this field in Lithuania and abroad (J. Ambrazevičius-Brazaitis, Rimvydas Šilbajoris, Vytautas Kavolis, Bronius Vaškelis, Violeta Kelertienė, Ilona Gražytė-Maziliauskienė, Viktorija Skrupskelytė, Tomas Venclova, Vanda Zaborskaitė, Kęstutis Nastopka, Albertas Zalatorius, Vytautas Kubilius, Viktorija Daujotytė, Irena Kostkevičiūtė), but except for the Greimas Paris School of Semiotics, which created its own field, literary theories had mostly a practical and educational impact on interpretations of Lithuanian disciplines. After the restoration of Lithuanian independence in 1990, the renewal of literary theory reached its peak that lasted for about two decades. The J. Greimas Semiotics Studies and Research Centre (now the A. J. Greimas Centre for Semiotics and Literary Theory) was established at Vilnius University in 1992, books written by A. J. Greimas were translated into Lithuanian and the publishing of academic journals “Semiotika” and “Baltos lankos” started. The so-called second wave of postmodern theories (intertextuality, narratology, feminism, postcolonialism, sociology, anthropology, new historicism deconstruc tion, reader response) has attracted the attention of literary scholars, bringing discussions about literature back to the fields of history, culture and politics (Nijolė Keršytė, Paulius Subačius, Irina Melnikova, Marijus Šidlauskas, Birutė Meržvinskaitė, Eugenijus Ališanka). Theories have updated the concepts and vocabulary of literary studies and reading strategies and helped literary scholars integrate themselves into international research more successfully. Along with the hermeneutics of trust, the hermeneutics of suspicion – questioning and complicating interpretations and identities of all texts, was taking an increasingly important place in Lithuanian literary research. Nevertheless, at this time the strengthened position of post-theoretical criticism cannot be anti-theoretical, ignoring the entire heritage of the 20th century.

Résumé :
The article examines the almost religious worship of Goethe as an unattainable universal genius and classical author, analyzing both the «Goethe cult» and the «anti-cult» in the German culture before the first half of the 20th century. The Goethe cult, that had started shortly after his death, largely contributed to the development of modern literary studies as a new science in Europe. The anniversary years invariably intensified the cult. Resistance to this cult became especially noticeable after WWI when, for the first time, a real «anti-cult» unfolded. It is documented, for example, in a series of articles by comedian C. Sternheim (1878-1942), where Goethe appears as the symbol for «Kulturphilister», in the «Steppenwolf» by H. Hesse, essays by Ortega y Gasset. The «standard education» turned Goethe into a «blank sign», referring to the national-patriotic cult of the «classics». Both the cult of Goethe and his anti-cult turned out to be very productive not only for literature and journalism, but also for literary criticism.

The paper examines the critical reception of the poem „Santa Maria della Salute” (1909) by Laza Kostić, with the aim of reconstruct its path from the silent to the celebrated poem about which, perhaps, has been most written about in our periodical. The destiny of the poem ”Santa Maria della Salute” follows the fate of its author, so thus the paper indirectly follows the unjust marginalization of Laza Kostić in Serbian literature of the 20th century. Looking at the reviews, analytical texts and monographic publications dedicated to the poem, it is shown that many decades had to pass until literary criticism recognized the significance of it and placed it on the throne of our modern poetry. Along with the critical texts, the paper also tracks the presence of the song ”Santa Maria della Salute” in poetry anthologies and in that way confirms its value as well.

Résumé :
The article is a review of the monograph “Russian Mass Culture: From Baroque to Post-Modernism” by Doctor of Philosophy, Professor of the Russian State University for the Humanities, Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences I.V. Kondakov. The book, which consists of seven chapters, is devoted to the history of the emergence and development of mass culture in Russia from ancient times to the beginning of the 20th century. Studying its origins dating back to antiquity, the author proves that Russian mass culture received an “impulse of independence” in the 17th century, as the culture was becoming personified, which means a personal principle was coming forward in it. It was during that period, associated with the emergence of Russian Baroque, that two paradigms appeared — Pre-Renaissance and Pre-Enlightenment, which led to the subsequent juxtaposition of “mass” and “elite” cultures in Russia first before Peter the Great and then after his period. The author gives an interesting assessment to the period of the Russian Enlightenment of the 18th century, when there happened a demarcation of the noble culture into liberal-democratic and conservative directions. Moreover, the former contributes to “massification”, and the latter – to “individualization” of Russian culture. The crisis of the classical paradigm in the 19th century, including the “literature-centrism” and “critical-centrism” of Russian culture, ultimately led to the formation of new artistic movements, new genres and styles, that is, to the modernization of Russian culture at the turn of the 19th—20th centuries. In this regard, the Silver Age turned out to be an “exquisite and ephemeral construction of the Russian Renaissance” in paradoxical forms of symbolism and modernism. The review reflected the structural and substantive aspects of I.V. Kondakov’s monograph, the features of his theoretical analysis, the specifics of style and language. The article evaluates the publication, reveals its uniqueness and scientific significance for modern humanitarian science, including history and cultural studies, literary criticism and philosophy, art criticism and aesthetics.

Résumé :
The article constitutes a collection of notes related to the lesser known and rarely commented works by an émigré writer – Adam Czerniawski: his poems translated into English, short texts of literary criticism, short novels and his memoirs. Modern Polish prose is still frequently treated as a ciphertext, of interest only to a limited number of readers who revel in this labyrinth of thoughts. It may seem that at the end of the 20th century – a period so involved in the debate about the traditional understanding of literature – avant-garde variants of prose should be understandable for everyone or, at least, that literary criticism would assign them to the appropriate level in the hierarchy of modern forms. However, the situation turned out to be different. The prose model imposed by Positivism still remains predominant in the habits and tastes of both literary critics and readers, and only recently has this model been questioned. As a result, the short novels by Czerniawski have not yet been sufficiently analysed. Reminiscent of Gombrowicz, these texts can be seen as absolute stories. The feature of absoluteness is visible at all their levels: origin, narration, reading. Everything is possible, yet nothing is accidental or random. However, limiting these narratives to only avant-garde rules would, without a doubt, distort their sense. Czerniawski’s prose also uses the infinite potential of the grotesque, plays with its own language, thus making it into an undoubtedly philosophical Ding an sich. The prose was also written in order to face traditional sanctities such as, for instance, the incorrigible “Polishness” that glorifies old symbols and sees a divine influence in them. Finally, Czerniawski’s prose is based on the “common sense” that can be found in numerous amusing contexts of the surrounding world.

Résumé :
The paper analyses the short story collection The Untilled Field by the Irish writer George Moore (1852-1933) with the aim of establishing the subversive potential of these stories in the context of the criticism of the overpowering dogmas within the Irish society at the beginning of the 20th century. With this long neglected short story collection, George Moore reveals a darker, silenced side of Ireland, hidden from the public discourse of the socio-political mainstream of the period. His social criticism is primarily focused on some neuralgic aspects of the Irish society of the time, namely on the dominant influence of the Irish Catholic church on the collective ethos of the nation and, subsequently, on the spiritual and moral paralysis of the Irish people as well as on mass emigrations of the Irish to America. By pinpointing these, in his view, destructive social forces and the complex sociopolitical situation in Ireland during the formation of the modern Irish state, George Moore identifies a state of collective moral lethargy characterised by total absence of any possibility of individual affirmation through artistic agency. The importance of this short story collection, from the point of view of scientific research, lies in the foregrounding motivation behind it. In other words, in George Moore´s intention to dig deep into the relentless existence of the Irish people at one stage in the country´s history and to re-shape the well- established colonial representations which favoured falsely pastoral visions of Ireland. It was not until the second half of the 20th century that the stigma of ´un-patriotic´ and ´subversive´ was lifted from this short story collection giving it, though still limited, well-deserved attention and recognising its literary and artistic importance for Irish national culture and for its literature.

The article examines the poetics of A.S. Neverov's “Jolly Fellows” story (1922), which shows the life of Neverov (Begunka) himself, a friend-writer A.K. Goldebaev (real name is Semenov) and his daughter Alenushka in the hungry years of the beginning of the 20th century. The choice of this particular work is due to several reasons. Firstly, the central character is Goldebaev, about whom practically nothing is known in the history of Russian literature, and the story is dedicated to one of the last years of his life. Secondly, this work is repeatedly mentioned in the correspondence of writers. Thirdly, in modern literary criticism, there are no scientific works on this story. All this testifies to the novelty and relevance of this article. The main research methods are comparative, structural and biographical. The fundamental nature of the research is ensured by the reliance on the study of unique archival material - memoirs and letters.

This paper deals with some of the sociological implications of a major cultural high-water point in the African American experience, the New Negro/Harlem Renaissance. The paper concentrates on the cultural transformations brought about through the intellectual activity of political activists, a multi-genre group of artists, cultural brokers, and businesspersons. The driving-wheel thrust of this era was the reclamation and the invigoration of the traditions of the culture with an emphasis on both the, African and the American aspects, which significantly impacted American and international culture then and throughout the 20th century. This study examines the pre-1920s background, the forms of Black activism during the Renaissance, the modern content of the writers' work, and the enthusiasm of whites for the African American art forms of the era. This essay utilizes research from a multi-disciplinary body of sources, which includes sociology, cultural history, creative literature and literary criticism, autobiography, biography, and journalism.

The most fascinating psychoanalytic theorist of the 20th century, Lacan, built on Freuds psychoanalytic theory to create a conceptual and all-encompassing framework for psychoanalysis. His theory, which is distinguished by a striking lack of a priori assumptions, has had a significant impact. Lacans views have influenced generations of philosophers and cultural theorists, resonating in fields as diverse as philosophy, film theory, feminism, literary criticism, and even modern ideological critiques. The core of Lacanian theory, the Register Theorythe Imaginary, the Symbolic, and the Realremains, laying the groundwork for his theories of the unconscious, subjectivity, objectivity, and gender differences. The Register Theory stands as Lacans most enthralling, yet also most intricate and demanding theoretical framework. This article endeavors to systematically expound upon Lacans perspectives concerning the Imaginary, Symbolic, and the Real, alongside the interplay of these three orders. It embarks on discourse and reiteration of Lacans triadic orders, striving to craft a tableau of Lacanian theory through these restatements.

Résumé :
The article examines the features of the characters of the heroes of Kazuo Ishiguro's novel "Don't Let Me Go" in the context of the dystopia of the 21st century. Based on a comparison of the dystopias of the 20th century on the one hand, and dystopias of the 21st century on the other hand, the tendencies of the development of this genre and the principles of reflection of the world outlook of the heroes are traced. It is noted that a distinctive feature of 20th century dystopias is the conflict of heroes with the existing regime, while in the 21st century dystopias less attention is paid to this conflict than the problem of the psychological state of characters who have already realized that it is useless to fight the ideology of society. The purpose of the article is to study the character’s accentuation, previously not considered, of the characters of Kadzuo Ishiguro’s novel Don’t Let Me Go in the context of modern literature. The heroine of the novel Katie S. is endowed with intellectual and moral qualities that, as it turned out, cannot change her fate as a “second class” person. Her friends Ruth and Tommy also have a non-standard outlook: each of them has their own inclinations and their own preferences. This aspect of the novel can be considered as protest, directed against the social structure that divides people into "first-class" and "second-class". One of the main conclusions: modern society, having become a "consumer society", loses the main feature of humanism – love and respect for every representative of humanity, depriving a person of will and thirst for life that was given by nature. When analyzing Kazuo Ishiguro's novel Don't Let Me Go, critics often draw attention to the "Japanese" syndrome that is present in the English characters. The formula of "collective national thinking" does exist in the work, but it seems to be insufficiently covered in literary criticism. In our opinion, "Japanese" should be considered in two aspects: a) as traditional service to duty, acceptance of fate and humility in Japanese culture; b) as a lack of passionarity and a syndrome of learned helplessness, the features of which we observe in many modern "non-Japanese".

Abstract: The notion of writing, developed by theorists such as Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida and Maurice Blanchot, in the 20th century, has a fundamental place when it comes to literary theory and literary criticism. This work proposes a collating between Walter Benjamin’s and Roland Barthes’ theory concerning writing. Taking some main features of writing, analyzed by Barthes, together with Benjamin’s thought about narration, the decline of experience and some modern literary works – such as Proust’s oeuvre – it is possible to elucidate how writing, working as a threshold (Schwelle), escapes from the rigidity of the borders that separate the personal and the historical, the common order and individualism, experience and “inner lived experience”.Keywords: Roland Barthes; Walter Benjamin; writing; threshold.

Résumé :
We explore the dystopian novels of the 1930s by Chinese novelists Zhang Tianyi “Ghostland Diary” (1931) and Lao She “Cat Country” (1932). We give brief information about the specifics of the work of Chinese writers who are not known to a wide range of modern domestic readers and literary critics. We reveal the typological proximity of these works to the dystopian novel by Y.I. Zamyatin “We”. We identify the literary predecessors of the analyzed novels, the connection with the works of Russian, Chinese, and world literature. We note the role of criticism in the fate of authors and their creations. We designate traditional and innovative genre and style features of books. We analyze in detail the plot-compositional structure, figurative system, and ideological content of the novels. We consider an ironic description of various spheres of life: the party system, elections, the education system, wars, and the creative activity of decadent poets. The features of narration associated with the artistic functions of narrators are studied in detail. The synthetic nature of the novels, combining elements of several literary genres, is noted. We reveal that the form of hyperbolic generalization of modern realities, elements of satire and irony in the depiction of society gave the works a timeless and extraspatial character, taking them beyond the limits of Chinese reality. We form an idea of the genre-typological community of Zhang Tianyi and Lao She’s warning novels, exposing myths about the ideal society of the 20th century.

Résumé :
Nikos Kazantzakis is one of the most famous Greek authors of the 20th century known primarily for his novels. A significant part of Nikos Kazantzakis’s work is his travel writings. Whereas the novels of Kazantzakis are recognized as canonical Greek literature, it is difficult to pinpoint his travelogues, or Ταξιδεύοντας (Traveling) due to the ambiguity of their critical reception: assessments range from neutral or mildly negative to enthusiastic. Both critical and enthusiastic assessments usually lack in-depth analysis of poetic, thematic, compositional, and stylistic features of the Traveling cycle. This essay is an attempt at a more cogent and motivated assessment of Kazantzakis’s cycle of travel notes and his role in the development of this genre. In contrast to the general view in Greek criticism, I argue that the genre of travelogue had developed for an extended period before Traveling was published and that Kazantzakis’s predecessors and contemporaries had contributed to its development. Among them is Kazantzakis’s contemporary Kostas Ouranis whose work has aspects and features to be found in the later work of Kazantzakis as the comparative analysis of the travel notes by both authors demonstrates.

Résumé :
The article is devoted to theoretical exploration of modern hybrid speculative fiction. This term comprises a huge body of creative works which are written at the intersection of genres related to speculative prose. On the one hand, hybrid speculative fiction is rooted in post-modern epoch, on the other hand, it returns to the principles of hybrid genre genesis, which flourished at the beginning of the 20th century. The tendency to genre eclecticism is a common feature of a great number of modern creative works and seems to be an efficient way out of conceptual crisis emerged in speculative fiction at the close of the 20th century, that is why the future development of speculative fiction is expected to be closely connected with the expansion of hybrid genre forms. The overall goal of the article is to scientifically comprehend hybrid genres in modern speculative fiction of the United States and Russia. The investigation of hybrid speculative fiction as a genre and cultural phenomenon leads to setting three goals. Firstly, it is necessary to determine genre taxonomy of such genres of traditional speculative fiction as science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Secondly, it is necessary to investigate genre-forming models, which underlie modern hybrid works. Thirdly, it is important to understand common features of the works of hybrid speculative fiction. The study of the genre interaction in modern speculative fiction is based on the descriptive and functional methods. The comparison of Russian and American works involves the use of comparative, typological and cultural-historical methods. Using the genre blocks common for both literary criticism, readers’ expectations and publishing practice, it is possible to identify such genre-forming models of hybrid speculative fiction, as: science fiction+fantasy; science fiction+horror; fantasy+historical novel; fantasy+postmodernist novel. It is also possible to sum up such common features of the works of hybrid speculative fiction, as: irrational world outlook; distortion of the very structural basis of traditional science fiction; shift of sociocultural model of world outlook; polyphonic principle of narration and potentially an endless unravelling of the plot without a pronounced climax; postclassical narrative model; the complexity of storyline. To conclude, modern hybrid speculative fiction can be treated as a separate literary and sociocultural phenomenon in the literature of the U.S. and Russia. It destroys inner canons of traditional science fiction, it is deeply influenced by post-modern cultural paradigm, and could be described as a significant cultural movement, which is aligned with demands and values of modern society.

The objective of the work is to demonstrate how the newspaper, as a democratic vehicle and public space, contributed to the spread of the movement and its subsequent edification the Brazilian cultural scene. The guiding hypothesis of the work is to state that the controversial and conflicting aspect of the news that circulated in the press, even before the conclusion of the Modern Art Week, should be considered as an instrument of this propagation. Résumé :
The refutation and the obliteration of the modernist era in Canadian literature by Robert Kroetsch and reasserted by Glen Wilmott makes it imperative to look at highly experimental literary works in the first half of the 20th century in Canada. The purpose of this paper, thus is to make a case for the inclusion Irene Bird’s Waste Heritage in the repertoire of modernist works in North America. The various criticism of Canadian literature as not having a modernist era needs to be debunked. The false assertion that Canadian literature moved straight from the Victorian era to a postmodernist face is probably due to the difficulty of defining what modernism is. The evolution and the expansion of the term modernism makes it imperative for one to reappraise the creative works of Irene Bird (Waste Heritage) and Sheila Watson (Double Hook) as modernist. An attempt to include Waste Heritage in the new modernist discourse of global literature by looking at the experimental way by which Baird used documentary modernism. The sustainability of a growing modern society vis-à-vis modernism, and the resistance of capitalism in Baird’s narrative would be used to make a case for Baird’s modernism.

Résumé :
This article attempts to treat Shakespeare as existentialism’s prolific precursor, as a writer who focuses on existentialist ideas in his own distinctive theatrical and poetic terms long before they were fully developed in the philosophical and literary terms of the 20th century. The plays of Shakespeare and existentialist philosophy are equally fascinated by issues such as authenticity and in-authenticity, freedom of thought, being and nothingness, authenticity, freedom, and self-becoming. In recent years, Shakespearean criticism has shied away from these fundamental existentialist concerns as reflected in his play, Hamlet, preferring to investigate the historical and cultural conditioning of human subjectivity. It aims to provide a sketch of existentialist thought and survey the influence of existentialism on readings of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. It also suggests that Shakespeare and modern existentialist philosophers and thinkers share a deep interest in the creative fusion of fiction and philosophy as the most faithful means of articulating the existentialist immediacy of experience and the philosophical quandaries. My attempt is to offer the critical viewpoints of Shakespearean critics, scholars, and some well-reputed existentialist philosophers and thinkers with a view to signifying existentialist readings of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Résumé :
The article examines the history and current state of the study of the topos of the city in modern Ukrainian literary criticism (2000–2010s). The city and urban space entered Ukrainian literature relatively late (through the prose of I. Nechuy-Levitsky, P. Mirny, I. Franko, V. Vynnychenko). This happened under the influence of the industrialization of the state and society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but the “urban text” of Ukrainian culture continued to form throughout the last century. In the studies of Ukrainian scientists addressing urban topics, the main attention is paid to the opposition of urban and rustic discourses, studies of the topos of the city in certain literary directions, phenomena, works of specific writers, as well as the main national “urban texts” – Kyiv and Lviv, – their connections with the history of these cities and the development of various national literatures referring to these texts: Austrian, Polish, Jewish, Russian, Ukrainian. Research is underway on “texts” of other cities (Poltava, Yekaterinoslav (Dnepropetrovsk / Dnepr), Odessa, Donetsk, Kharkov, etc.), including provincial towns that are an integral part of Ukrainian culture. A relatively small number of works are devoted to theoretical problems. The methodology for studying the topos of the city is, as a rule, based on a structuralist approach based on the achievements of the Tartu-Moscow semiotic school.

Résumé :
The aim of the research is to develop the typology and examine the features of women’s representations in the US literary works, focused on medical problematics. The research methodology is based on the application of modern literary studies in the fields of narratology, receptive aesthetics and literary hermeneutics. The paper analyses the author’s intentions and the role of the reader’s reception of medical discourse through the prism of gender studies and feminist literary criticism. We analyse the semi-autobiographical prose works by the American writers: “The Snake Pit” (1946) by Mary Jane Ward, “The Bell Jar” (1963) by Sylvia Plath, and “Prozac Nation” (1994) by Elizabeth Wurtzel. The theoretical significance of the research consists in the disclosure of women’s representations in the American literary and medical discourse in the diachronic focus. We examine the role of women as physicians, the peculiarities of representing women as nurses, as well as the narrative role of women as patients. The research is the first scientific attempt to examine the peculiarities of narrative representation of women in the literary and medical discourse of the US prose. The research demonstrates the transformation of women’s representations in the analysed novels, which directly reflects the emancipation tendencies over the course of the 20th century. These changes are naturally displayed in the narrative configuration of the prose works under consideration. The study of medical problems in a literary work through the prism of narratology and receptive aesthetics reveales the author’s intentionality and dimensions of the reader’s reception, as well as enables us to re-consider the socio-cultural phenomena, such as illness and health, norm and pathology. The results of the study will improve the content of training courses in the world literature and form a methodological basis for the development of special courses, theme-based seminars and academic syllabi.

Résumé :
The article focuses on the fact that one of the most productive forms of self-identification and representation in domestic women’s prose of the late 20th – early 21st centuries is the literary form of autofiction, which attests the continuation of the traditions of autobiography in the domestic gyneprose to the new level. However, modern autogyneprose mostly positions its openness to the reader, starting from the level of the “external pact” with the recipient, who emerges from the book pages through the conclusion of external pacts with the reader at the level of preface, inner interviews, own photo of writers, etc., which are called to witness openness of the author, clearly outline her image, and to some extent to announce her intentions. That is, the active position of dialogue with the recipient can be traced. This position is also indicated by the creation by the writers of the image of the implicit reader by introducing an internal addressee, that is, an internal pact in the form of a dialogue with the reader throughout the story. The active interaction of the narrator with the reader in women’s prose of the early 21st century also enables the latter to come closer to understanding of their own image, since the heroine of autofiction becomes for the recipient those Others, in the background of whom their own self-identification takes place. However, when it comes to the literary comprehension of these constructs, it should be noted that there is no conception of their analysis in the literary criticism of gynecritical orientation. This is the reason for the practice of using for this purpose of the “masculine” theory of literary analysis of narrative, in particular, the theory of autobiographical pact by Philippe Lejeune and the theory of narrative by Gérard Genette. And yet another complexity of narratological analysis of a text from the point of view of its narrative organization is not only an innovative method of autogyneprose research, but also some innovation in the field of the study of the narrative organization of non-fiction texts in comparison with fiction texts (this applies to both domestic and foreign literary studies). In this regard, the study of the forms of ego-narrative objectification in the autofiction texts by O. Drachkovska, I. Karpa, Ye. Kononenko, S. Povalyaeva and I. Rozdobudko is very relevant.

Résumé :
The year 2021 marks the 200th anniversary of Dostoevsky’s birth and the 140th anniversary of his immortality. Literary anniversaries became a part of the Russian culture relatively recently. The celebration is usually held in memory of those who had already found eternity. The attempt to celebrate the tercentenary of Shakespeare (1864) and the centenary of Pushkin’s birth in 1899 marked the beginning of a new cultural tradition. The dates of literary anniversaries in the 20th century reflect the struggle between these trends: birthdays are gradually replacing memorial days. Anniversaries tend to be an occasion not only for understanding a writer’s significance in the modern world, but also for analyzing the trends and prospects of studying their legacy. The article provides an overview of the past anniversaries of Dostoevsky in Russia and an analysis of several articles from the first issue of The Unknown Dostoevsky journal for 2021. The special feature of Dostoevsky’s bicentennial anniversary is the competition held by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) “Sources and methods in the study of the legacy of F. M. Dostoevsky in Russian and world culture” (2018–2021), which resulted in the support of 28 projects by leading Russian scientists. They will result in the publication of an unprecedented corpus of studies on Dostoevsky’s biography, philosophy, creativity, textual criticism and poetics. In post-Soviet Russia, the gap between Dostoevsky studies and mass consciousness, science and education is apparent. Moreover, technologies to counteract Dostoevsky’s influence on the modern Russian person are still operating. Reading and studying Dostoevsky remains the privilege of philologists, whose number in Russian universities has been drastically reduced with no prospects of the development of continuous humanitarian education. Nevertheless, despite influential opponents, Dostoevsky represents Russia, the Karamazovs are the most famous Russian surname, and today, just like 150 years ago, the prophet and apostle Dostoevsky conveys the word of truth and veracity to the world.
