Texte intégralStarting from a lexical point of view, this research aims at investigating the presence of musical elements within the epigrammatic production of the Hellenistic period, with references also to later authors. Two kinds of sources have been analysed: literary epigrams (including poems from the Greek Anthology, the New Posidippus, and the material collected by Gow-Page) and epigraphic epigrams (including inscriptions from Steinepigramme aus dem Griechischen Osten and Inscriptions métriques de l’Égypte greco-romain), in order to have a coherent and balanced field of investigation. The material has been divided into two main parts, “Mousikà stoikheia” and “Organikè mousa”, referred to musical categories and musical instruments. The analysis, starting from the reconstruction of the potential musical meaning of each term, based on etymology and literary and theoretical development, and going on through the interpretation of the most relevant occurrences of the term in epigrammatic texts, shows a particular sensibility towards the musical element, recalling both the terminology of musical theory and, more often, the traditional treatment of some themes belonging to the literary tradition. A final Appendix provides an index with the terms found during the textual investigation.

Texte intégralMy thesis offers a systematic study of all the sound changes classifiable as 'Compensatory Lengthening' (CL) in the history of the Ancient Greek language. The importance of such vowel lengthenings in Greek historical phonology and dialectology is of course well known, but several individual developments are still debated or poorly understood. Special attention has been paid to the current debate on CL in theoretical phonology, and to correctly applying the insights of general linguistics to the Greek facts. For each instance of CL in Greek, I have tried to propose an explanation which is consistent both with other known developments of Greek and with universal, cross-linguistic tendencies. Greek is found to confirm the recent view that there is not one single rule or mechanism responsible for CL, but that several kinds exist, some operating directly at the level of abstract phonological structure, some arising form the phonologization of gradual, phonetically-conditioned developments. Both types are found to be well-represented in Greek. However, one typology of CL that has often been postulated for Greek (i.e. CL from degemination) did not, in fact, exist in this language. The last part of this study is devoted to four separate cases of apparent irregularity in the distribution of CL, or in the timbre of the resulting long vowel. After an etymological and philological analysis of all the relevant material, explanations are proposed for the irregularities.

Entrambi i tipi risultano ben rappresentati in greco.

Texte intégralOn Damascius' "De principiis": the main focus of this essay wants to be the analysis – both historical and speculative – of the last Neo-platonic philosophy after Proclus from the privileged point of view of the finest metaphysical treatise surviving about the year 529 (closing of Platonic Academy by means of Justinian edict). At least three respects must be pointed out: I) Damascius aims to consider radically not only the One as the highest principle but also that principle which is besides the One; as a result his metaphysics becomes a protology (similar to Dionysius the Areopagite's hypermetaphysics, but rationally), since he does not proceed from the One downward but mainly from the One upward, towards the apophatic principle. II) The first Italian version of the treatise has planned on highlighting the rhetorical strategy tinged with Damascius' research: not only is the last scholar an aporetic philosopher but also his modus scribendi is euporetic. The perspectives that arise from aporetic hermeneutics shed light on logos as open wide, in order to glimpse the ineffable as ineffable, setting it free from rational implications specially through endeixis, hyparxis and intelligible labour pains. III) Since the primum primorum is ineffable and since the whole comes from the ineffable, all of the enads and of the triads of Neo-Platonic theoretical building are ineffable and essentially unknowable; this is not scepticism because of the nature of the first principle: it is known as unknowable, which is the rational way to preserve its apophatic (and not simply cataphatic) trascendence. Therefore it will be argued that Damascius' rational mysticism shows hypermetaphysical ineffable is both above the One and just inside each level of human thought: logos is so strong to go beyond itself somehow.

Abstract: This dissertation focuses on the category of aspect in Ancient Greek. Aspects is typically a semantic and morphological characteristic of verbs in the languages where it occurs, as in Ancient Greek. Semantically it is related to how time is considered in the discourse. It shows how events are specified in relation to time in sentences. From the morphological point of view, aspect is as morphological morpheme aggregated to certain verbal forms such as present, perfect, aorist and future. The dissertation presents the morphological structure of Ancient Greek verbs, to show how the aspectual meaning is associated to morphemes. In relation to the literature, the notion of aspect is presented in grammars and in specific works by linguists. A review of the principal ideas is presented and discussed. It is assumed that the aspectual meaning in verbs is a morphological mark, but it also depends on the meaning conveyed by the lexemes. New works on the subject brought new insights not only on the definition of aspect, but also in the analysis of its occurrence in languages, including a review of the traditional interpretation of aspect in Ancient Greek. This dissertation detected some remaining problems and it brings possible solutions. In this way, this dissertation states that in Ancient Greek verbs the elements that define the aspectual meaning are morphologically determined by special verbal morphemes, but it is also important to take into account the semantic meaning of the lexemes. Only when both elements are considered, it is possible to assign the aspectual meaning to a sentence

Abstract: In our thesis, we examine the two final books (XVII and XVIII) in Priscian's Institutiones grammaticae (c.
