L'obiettivo del presente elaborato è la disanima di quali siano le potenzialità delle "cryptocurrencies", uno strumento di pagamento virtuale nato inizialmente in sostituzione delle monete tradizionali. In particolare si cercherà di comprendere come l'utilizzo di questo strumento possa apportare vantaggi per i soggetti che dovessero decidere di utilizzare tali strumenti. La prima parte dell'elaborato fornirà informazioni generali sulle motivazioni che hanno portato alla nascita delle criptomonete, osservando alcuni esempi di criptovalute tra le migliaia attualmente esistenti ed estrapolando da ciascun esempio spunti utili a capirne le potenzialità. Successivamente si tratterà della blockchain, tecnologia alla base di molte criptovalute che tuttavia possiede delle potenzialità intrinseche non trascurabili come strumento a sé stante. Una volta trattati questi argomenti, si cercherà di fornire una valutazione mirata a comprendere le possibilità per le criptovalute di diventare un effettivo strumento di pagamento alternativo a quanto attualmente esistente. Si valuterà inoltre l'importanza del rapporto tra early adopters e late adopters ai fini dell'adozione con successo di tali criptovalute. Infine si discuteranno i risultati di un sondaggio, dalle cui risposte possono essere tratte delle conclusioni per comprendere l'interesse che le criptovalute suscitano nei potenziali utilizzatori.

L’obiettivo dello studio. Imaging di perfusione miocardica (MPI) con la tomografia computerizzata a emissione di singolo fotone (SPECT) è un importante strumento diagnostico non invasivo nella diagnosi, stratificazione del rischio e prognosi per la malattia delle arterie coronarie (CAD). La valutazione quantitativa del flusso sanguigno miocardico (MBF) e della riserva di flusso coronarico (CFR) consente un giudizio sulla gravità della CAD, il monitoraggio della sua progressione e la valutazione dell'efficacia di strategie terapeutiche anti-ischemiche. La PET/TC è considerata lo standard per le valutazioni quantitative del MBF, ma richiede traccianti di breve emivita, costosi e non ampiamente disponibili. La SPECT con i rivelatori del Tellururo di Cadmio e Zinco (CZT) permette l'acquisizione dinamica e la quantificazione del MBF. Lo scopo del presente studio è di valutare degli indici del MBF e della CFR con 99mTc-tetrofosmina su una CZT SPECT del reparto di Medicina Nucleare presso l’Istituto Maugeri IRCCS Veruno e confrontarli con quelli ottenuti con 13N-NH3 su una PET/CT presso reparto di Medicina Nucleare ASST- Spedali Civili di Brescia. Inoltre, abbiamo esaminato i valori del MBF e della CFR con due diverse posizioni della ROI 3D utilizzata per l'estrazione della funzione di ingresso (nella cavità del VS – metodo 1 (M1) ed in sede valvolare – metodo 2 (M2) per capire, se questo fattore risulta vincolante per l’analisi. Materiali e metodi. Sono stati valutati 8 pazienti a riposo e sotto lo stress farmacologico con 99mTc-tetrofosmina-CZT. Il MBF e la CFR sono stati misurati da CZT senza AC (NAC-CZT) con due diverse posizioni della ROI 3D per la funzione di ingresso (input function): nella cavità del ventricolo sinistro (M1) ed in sede valvolare (M2). Successivamente è stato effettuato il confronto con i dati ottenuti con 13N-NH3 su una PET/CT presso il reparto di Medicina Nucleare ASST- Spedali Civili di Brescia. Risultati. Nelle misurazioni del MBF a riposo e sotto stress e della CFR globali tra la NAC-CZT (M1 e M2) e la PET è stata rilevata una correlazione statisticamente significativa tra i valori del MBF sotto stress ottenuti con la NAC-CZT M2 e la PET (P = 0,0164). I valori della CFR globali e regionali valutati sia con NAC-CZT M1 che NAC-CZT M2 non sono statisticamente correlabili con quelli ottenuti con la PET (P per tutti i confronti > 0,05). Tuttavia, i valori della CFR ottenuti con NAC-CZT M1 vs NAC-CZT M2 si correlano bene sia a livello globale (P = 0,0247) che a livello regionale nei territori LAD (P = 0,0227) e LCX (P = 0,0246), mentre è assente la correlazione significativa nel territorio RCA (P = 0, 2045). Conclusioni. La misurazione del MBF e della CFR ad oggi è diventata possibile nella pratica clinica grazie alla diffusa disponibilità della CZT-SPECT, il software integrato risulta riproducibile e non è vincolato dal lavoro dell’operatore. La correlazione tra la CZT e la PET/TC non è perfetta e quindi la CZT ancora non può essere considerata completamente sostitutiva per la misurazione del MBF e della CFR. Multiple sfide tecniche e incongruenze contribuiscono all’imprecisione complessiva della misurazione della CFR con la SPECT, con conseguente variazione delle sue stime e delle diverse soglie per il rilevamento dell'ischemia tra i vari studi sui pazienti e i diversi centri di imaging. Pertanto, dato il rischio di una sovra o sotto-diagnosi in base alla bassa accuratezza delle misure, l’utilizzo di questo metodo nella pratica clinica va impiegato solo selettivamente e con cautela. Infine, per una valutazione appropriata del paziente, i valori della CFR dovrebbero essere interpretati in combinazione con gli altri indicatori validati di malattia, compresi i modelli di perfusione e le misure funzionali, così come la storia clinica

Computer-assisted translation (or computer-aided translation or CAT) is a form of language translation in which a human translator uses computer software in order to facilitate the translation process. Machine translation (MT) is the automated process by which a computerized system produces a translated text or speech from one natural language to another. Both of them are leading and promising technologies in the translation industry; it therefore seems important that translation students and professional translators become familiar with this relatively new types of technology. Whether used together, not only might these two different types of systems reduce translation time, but also lead to a further improvement in the field of translation technologies.
The dissertation consists of four chapters. The first one surveys the chronological development of MT and CAT tools, the emergence of pre-editing, post-editing and controlled language and the very last frontiers in this sector. The second one provide a general overview on the four main CAT tools that are used nowadays and tested hereto. The third chapter is dedicated to the experimentations that have been conducted in order to analyze and evaluate the performance of the four integrated systems that are the core subject of this dissertation. Finally, the fourth chapter deals with the issue of terminological equivalence in interlinguistic translation.
The purpose of this dissertation is not to provide an objective and definitive solution to the complex issues that arise at any time in the field of translation technologies, this aim being well away from being achieved, but to supply information about the limits and potentiality that are typical of those instruments which are now essential to any professional translator.

Le nuove regole globali e una maggiore coscienza etica implicano controlli sempre più rigorosi sull’impiego dei vertebrati negli studi in vivo. Di conseguenza, negli ultimi anni, per ovviare ai rilevanti costi e ai tempi necessari ad ottenere le autorizzazioni per condurre studi sui vertebrati, sono stati proposti modelli alternativi che non utilizzano o riducono l’utilizzo dei vertebrati.
Nel presente lavoro sono stati proposti e messi a puto tre modelli preclinici non convenzionali per condurre studi sull’attività e sulla tossicità in vivo di sostanze chimiche e biologiche.
Risultati promettenti sono stati ottenuti dal lepidottero Galleria mellonella che si è dimostrato un modello preclinico affidabile sia per lo screening di sostanze antimicrobiche naturali, probiotici che per lo studio del rapporto ospite-parassita.
Anche per il coleottero Tenebrio molitor sono stati ottenuti dati incoraggianti su un suo utilizzo come potenziale modello di infiammazione intestinale.
Infine è stato messo a punto un modello di mucosa impiegando la specie di lumaca Limacus flavus per determinare il potenziale irritante di sostanze chimiche.
Questi modelli, nonostante alcune limitazioni, si sono dimostrati strumenti efficaci per condurre screening rapidi e riproducibili che non richiedono strumenti sofisticati ma che sono in linea con le normative vigenti sulla tutela della sperimentazione animaleNew global regulations and greater ethical conscience lead to stronger controls on the use of vertebrates in pre-clinical studies. To overcome the significant costs and time required to obtain authorisation for mammalian studies, alternative animal models have been proposed in recent years to reduce the utilisation of vertebrates. Three non-conventional pre-clinical models were proposed and tested in the present work to evaluate in vivo activity and toxicity of chemical and biological substances. Promising results were obtained from the Lepidoptera Galleria mellonella, which proved to be a reliable pre-clinical model for screening natural antimicrobial substances, probiotics, and the host-parasite relationship. Encouraging data were also observed using the Coleoptera Tenebrio molitor as a potential model of intestinal inflammation. In addition, the snail species Limacus flavus was developed as an in vivo mucosal model to assess the irritant potential of chemicals. Although the proposed models have some limitations, they have proven to be effective for rapid and reproducible pre-clinical screening. These assays do not require sophisticated instruments and are aligned with current legislation on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes.

L’obiettivo dello studio è stato quello di valutare l’efficienza della felce (Pteris vittata L.) nella fitoestrazione di arsenico da suoli contaminati, in varie condizioni ambientali e colturali. Il lavoro è stato effettuato direttamente in campo attraverso l’utilizzo di felci precedentemente piantumate in parcelle sperimentali, e giunte al terzo anno di crescita. L’andamento del bioaccumulo di arsenico nella parte epigea delle piante è stato seguito per un periodo di sei mesi, durante il quale le felci sono state cresciute nelle condizioni ambientali naturali, ad eccezione dell’irrigazione nei mesi più caldi. Un altro aspetto di questo lavoro è stato quello di valutare la fitoestrazione di arsenico dal suolo e la mobilità dell’arsenico nel suolo in funzione delle caratteristiche sito specifiche. I risultati sono stati confrontati con i dati precedentemente ottenuti nel sito sperimentale, al fine di valutare l’efficienza di fitoestrazione da parte di P. vittata in cicli di crescita consecutivi.

Il lavoro di tesi ha riguardato l’attività svolta nel campo sperimentale di fitoestrazione di As situato nella rotonda di San Giuliano(Ve), sito caratterizzato da una contaminazione diffusa medio-bassa di As. Il campo è strutturato in nove parcelle distinte con dimensioni di circa 6m2 l’una, diversificate per densità di piante e per condizioni colturali. L’obiettivo dello studio è stato l’acquisizione di conoscenze sulle cinetiche di bioaccumulo di As ad opera della specie vegetale iperaccumulatrice Pteris vittata durante tutto il suo ciclo di vita e ha coinvolto nella sperimentazione due lavori di tesi paralleli improntati su parcelle diverse.
Durante tutto il ciclo di vita della felce, le fronde della pianta continuano a vegetare, presentando costantemente fronde di tutte le età, caratterizzate da differenti tempi di accumulo e quindi da concentrazioni differenti, rendendo estremamente complesso seguire le cinetiche di assorbimento e di bioaccumulo. È stata adottata perciò una strategia di campionamento basato sulle fronde più mature, valutando così di volta in volta il massimo accumulo raggiunto. Lo studio ha richiesto lo sviluppo di uno specifico protocollo di campionamento e d’analisi. I risultati ottenuti hanno permesso di determinare le cinetiche di estrazione e di accumulo di As e di ipotizzare un meccanismo di trasferimento e accumulo dal sistema suolo-rizosfera-pianta in due stadi, individuando alcuni importanti fattori che ne influenzano le velocità.

Il presente lavoro si propone di approfondire il tema della “responsabilità nel gruppo” , così come disciplinata dalla riforma del diritto societario.
In particolare la riflessione si concentrerà sulle due diverse fattispecie di responsabilità disciplinate al II co., dell’art. 2497 c.c., al fine di
-ricostruirne gli elementi costitutivi e i connotati;
-proporne un inquadramento sistematico nel contesto del microsistema normativo della responsabilità speciale nel gruppo e, più ampiamente, delle categorie generali del dritto civile.
A tal fine si è ritenuto indispensabile procedere preliminarmente a ricostruire la natura della responsabilità di cui al I co. dell’art. 2497 c.c. (cap. I), posto che il II comma, prima parte, di tale disposizione prevede l’imputazione di un’obbligazione risarcitoria solidale a “chiunque abbia preso parte al fatto lesivo”. Poiché con questa espressione si introduce, inequivocabilmente, una responsabilità da concorso, occorre stabilire quale sia il fatto al quale si prende parte.
D’altronde l’intesse a definire la responsabilità per abuso di eterodirezione deriva dal fatto che, come si cercherà di dimostrare compiutamente, la responsabilità sia di “chi abbia preso comunque parte al fatto lesivo”, sia di “chi ne abbia tratto consapevolmente beneficio” risulta essere, già in base all’inequivoco tenore letterale della norma, accessoria e dipendente dalla prima.
La riflessione relativa alla responsabilità principale da direzione e coordinamento contra legem è stata condotta alla luce delle diverse teorie proposte dalla dottrina civilistica per di distinguere l’ambito della responsabilità extracontrattuale da quella da inadempimento. La medesima indagine ha cercato di individuare anche l’oggetto e la fonte dell’obbligo di esercitare l’eterodirezione in conformità ai principi di corretta gestione societaria e imprenditoriale.
La ricostruzione della responsabilità prevista al I comma dell’art. 2497 c.c. ha costituito, inoltre, un riferimento indispensabile per definire la fattispecie relativa a “chi abbia comunque preso parte al fatto lesivo”. Si è proposto, infatti, un raffronto fra la disciplina di cui al I e al II comma della disposizione in esame, al fine di determinare l’ambito di applicazione della responsabilità dei concorrenti all’abuso di eterodirezione (cap. II). Tale metodo conduce ad attribuire alla fattispecie di cui al II co., prima parte, dell’art. 2497 una funzione sistematica residuale rispetto alle diverse condotte con-cause dell’evento lesivo. La disposizione risulta, cioè, capace di fondare la responsabilità solidale di qualunque soggetto abbia fornito un contributo causalmente efficiente al verificarsi del fatto lesivo, non suscettibile di integrare gli estremi dell’esercizio dell’attività di direzione e coordinamento, entro cui il I co. della disposizione di apertura del Capo IX –tramite l’utilizzo dell’espressione “esercitando attività di direzione e coordinamento di società”- inquadra l’agire nell’interesse imprenditoriale proprio o altrui, in violazione dei principi di corretta gestione societaria e imprenditoriale.
Funzione residuale, anzi di chiusura, del microsistema della responsabilità nel gruppo viene anche attribuita alla fattispecie di cui all’ultima parte, del II co. dell’art. 2497 c.c. (cap III).
Per ricostruire tale fattispecie, essa è stata esaminata in parallelo con l’azione generale di arricchimento, come suggerito dalla limitazione al “vantaggio conseguito” posta all’obbligo del beneficiario consapevole. Il riferimento all’azione generale di arricchimento risulta utile per cogliere differenze e affinità con il rimedio in esame; e per ricostruire i profili indeterminati e la collocazione sistematica di una disposizione appena tratteggiata dal legislatore.
Terminata la ricostruzione dei profili generali della responsabilità dei concorrenti e dei beneficiari consapevoli, si è proceduto ad utilizzarne gli esiti per affrontare due ipotesi paradigmatiche di responsabilità:
-quella della persona fisica holding, dato che l’opinione dottrinaria prevalente ricorre proprio al II comma dell’art. 2497 c.c. per sanzionare tale soggetto, escluso dai legittimati passivi all’azione per abuso di eterodirezione dalla restrittiva formula letterale utilizzata al I comma (cap. IV). Si è cercato, in particolare, di dimostrare l’inadeguatezza di tale tesi, oltre che del ricorso al diritto comune della responsabilità civile a disciplinare il caso omesso della capogruppo individuale.
Si è proposta, inoltre, una soluzione alternativa della questione, fondata sull’estensione analogica del I comma, cui si dovrebbe pervenire grazie all’intervento della Corte costituzionale.

In the first chapter we try to establish if the first paragraph of the art. 2497 c.c.provide for a contractual liability, due to a breach of a pre-existent obligation; or a tort liability, due to the commission of a tort. The second chapter analises the first part of the second paragraph of art. 2497 c.c. to establish the nature and the systematic function of the liability of who take part in the abuse of the holding company. The third chapter talks about the liability of the aware beneficiary (second part of the second paragraph of art. 2497 c.c.): in this work we try to establish the nature of the liability , considered as a case of unjustified enrichment (art. 2041 c.c.). In the last two chapter we apply the results of the previous reflection to: the case of the holding-individual person, to establish which discipline we must apply to it, which the first paragraph of the art. 2497 c.c.doesn't provide for; establish if the liability in the group can be applied to the bank, when it is holding, concurrent in its tort or aware beneficiary.

Il presente lavoro si propone di approfondire il tema della “responsabilità nel gruppo” , così come disciplinata dalla riforma del diritto societario.
In particolare la riflessione si concentrerà sulle due diverse fattispecie di responsabilità disciplinate al II co., dell’art. 2497 c.c., al fine di
-ricostruirne gli elementi costitutivi e i connotati;
-proporne un inquadramento sistematico nel contesto del microsistema normativo della responsabilità speciale nel gruppo e, più ampiamente, delle categorie generali del dritto civile.
A tal fine si è ritenuto indispensabile procedere preliminarmente a ricostruire la natura della responsabilità di cui al I co. dell’art. 2497 c.c. (cap. I), posto che il II comma, prima parte, di tale disposizione prevede l’imputazione di un’obbligazione risarcitoria solidale a “chiunque abbia preso parte al fatto lesivo”. Poiché con questa espressione si introduce, inequivocabilmente, una responsabilità da concorso, occorre stabilire quale sia il fatto al quale si prende parte.
D’altronde l’intesse a definire la responsabilità per abuso di eterodirezione deriva dal fatto che, come si cercherà di dimostrare compiutamente, la responsabilità sia di “chi abbia preso comunque parte al fatto lesivo”, sia di “chi ne abbia tratto consapevolmente beneficio” risulta essere, già in base all’inequivoco tenore letterale della norma, accessoria e dipendente dalla prima.
La riflessione relativa alla responsabilità principale da direzione e coordinamento contra legem è stata condotta alla luce delle diverse teorie proposte dalla dottrina civilistica per di distinguere l’ambito della responsabilità extracontrattuale da quella da inadempimento. La medesima indagine ha cercato di individuare anche l’oggetto e la fonte dell’obbligo di esercitare l’eterodirezione in conformità ai principi di corretta gestione societaria e imprenditoriale.
La ricostruzione della responsabilità prevista al I comma dell’art. 2497 c.c. ha costituito, inoltre, un riferimento indispensabile per definire la fattispecie relativa a “chi abbia comunque preso parte al fatto lesivo”. Si è proposto, infatti, un raffronto fra la disciplina di cui al I e al II comma della disposizione in esame, al fine di determinare l’ambito di applicazione della responsabilità dei concorrenti all’abuso di eterodirezione (cap. II). Tale metodo conduce ad attribuire alla fattispecie di cui al II co., prima parte, dell’art. 2497 una funzione sistematica residuale rispetto alle diverse condotte con-cause dell’evento lesivo. La disposizione risulta, cioè, capace di fondare la responsabilità solidale di qualunque soggetto abbia fornito un contributo causalmente efficiente al verificarsi del fatto lesivo, non suscettibile di integrare gli estremi dell’esercizio dell’attività di direzione e coordinamento, entro cui il I co. della disposizione di apertura del Capo IX –tramite l’utilizzo dell’espressione “esercitando attività di direzione e coordinamento di società”- inquadra l’agire nell’interesse imprenditoriale proprio o altrui, in violazione dei principi di corretta gestione societaria e imprenditoriale.
Funzione residuale, anzi di chiusura, del microsistema della responsabilità nel gruppo viene anche attribuita alla fattispecie di cui all’ultima parte, del II co. dell’art. 2497 c.c. (cap III).
Per ricostruire tale fattispecie, essa è stata esaminata in parallelo con l’azione generale di arricchimento, come suggerito dalla limitazione al “vantaggio conseguito” posta all’obbligo del beneficiario consapevole. Il riferimento all’azione generale di arricchimento risulta utile per cogliere differenze e affinità con il rimedio in esame; e per ricostruire i profili indeterminati e la collocazione sistematica di una disposizione appena tratteggiata dal legislatore.
Terminata la ricostruzione dei profili generali della responsabilità dei concorrenti e dei beneficiari consapevoli, si è proceduto ad utilizzarne gli esiti per affrontare due ipotesi paradigmatiche di responsabilità:
-quella della persona fisica holding, dato che l’opinione dottrinaria prevalente ricorre proprio al II comma dell’art. 2497 c.c. per sanzionare tale soggetto, escluso dai legittimati passivi all’azione per abuso di eterodirezione dalla restrittiva formula letterale utilizzata al I comma (cap. IV). Si è cercato, in particolare, di dimostrare l’inadeguatezza di tale tesi, oltre che del ricorso al diritto comune della responsabilità civile a disciplinare il caso omesso della capogruppo individuale.
Si è proposta, inoltre, una soluzione alternativa della questione, fondata sull’estensione analogica del I comma, cui si dovrebbe pervenire grazie all’intervento della Corte costituzionale.

In the first chapter we try to establish if the first paragraph of the art. 2497 c.c.provide for a contractual liability, due to a breach of a pre-existent obligation; or a tort liability, due to the commission of a tort. The second chapter analises the first part of the second paragraph of art. 2497 c.c. to establish the nature and the systematic function of the liability of who take part in the abuse of the holding company. The third chapter talks about the liability of the aware beneficiary (second part of the second paragraph of art. 2497 c.c.): in this work we try to establish the nature of the liability , considered as a case of unjustified enrichment (art. 2041 c.c.). In the last two chapter we apply the results of the previous reflection to: the case of the holding-individual person, to establish which discipline we must apply to it, which the first paragraph of the art. 2497 c.c.doesn't provide for; establish if the liability in the group can be applied to the bank, when it is holding, concurrent in its tort or aware beneficiary.

Haydn’s instrumental music is often marked by peculiarities—events that feature harmonic deflections, gasping pauses, metrically dissonant accents, and the like—for which the customary methods of structural and stylistic analysis can promise only limited explanation. The evolving language of Disability Studies in music offers a vantage point for contemplating such idiosyncrasies, most notably those that suggest musical equivalents of impairment and recovery. A disability-related perspective may serve as a guide in the search for appropriate metaphors: words and images that can help breathe life into our interaction with a given work as listeners and performers. As witnessed in certain passages from Haydn’s string quartets and a symphony, a reading that shows the music to embody disabling conditions and their remediation helps us connect with emotions and experiences that may resonate with the lives of the composer and his contemporaries as well as with our own.

The book traces the anti-metaphysical orientation of (much of) analytic philosophy back to discussions in Austro-German philosophy in the second half of the nineteenth century. The starting-point of the book is the debate over the relation between empirical science (here: psychology) and metaphysics: does psychology need a metaphysics of mental substances? The negative answer informed Austrian philosophy in the second half of the nineteenth century and provided a model for ontologies that dispense with substances. The book introduces Brentano’s Intentionalism and Mach’s Neutral Monism as two anti-metaphysical views in the study of mental phenomena. It goes on to use the Austrian ‘psychology without a soul’ view as a vantage point from which to reconstruct and assess the immediate prehistory and formation of analytic philosophy (Ward, Stout, Moore, Russell). While Austrian philosophers retired the soul, early analytic philosophers were happy to introduce a successor, the subject, and conceive of the mental as constituted by subject–object relations. The final part of the book returns to the theme of anti-metaphysics from a different perspective. It focuses on Moritz Schlick’s arguments for the conclusion that metaphysics lies beyond the limits of knowledge, arguments that are rooted in the philosophy of mind discussed in previous parts.

Citizenship was the mark of political belonging in Europe in the twentieth century, while estate, religion, party, class, and nation lost political significance in the century of extremes. This thesis is demonstrated by examining the legal institution of citizenship with its deciding influence on the limits of a political community in terms of inclusion and exclusion. Citizenship determines a person’s protection, equality, and freedom and thus his or her chances in life and survival. This book recounts the history of citizenship in Europe as the history of European statehood in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, doing so from three vantage points: as the development of a legal institution crucial to European constitutionalism; as a measure of an individual’s opportunities for self-fulfilment ranging from freedom to totalitarian subjugation; and as a succession of alternating, often sharply divergent, political regimes, considered from the perspective of their inclusivity and exclusivity, and their justification. The European history of citizenship is discussed for six selected countries: Great Britain, France, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Russia. For the first time, a joint history of citizenship in Western and Eastern Europe is told here, from the heyday of the nation-state to our present day, which is marked by the crises of the European Union. It is the history of a central legal institution that significantly represents and at the same time determines struggles over migration, integration, and belonging. One of the central concerns of this book is the lessons that can be learned from it regarding the future chances of European citizenship.

This book examines the vital narrative work performed by disabled characters in the Victorian novel. By plotting disabled characters across the field of nineteenth-century fiction via Dickensian melodrama, Wilkie Collins’s sensational mysteries, domestic fiction by Charlotte M. Yonge and Dinah Mulock Craik, and realist works by George Eliot and Henry James, it demonstrates the centrality of disability to the Victorian novel, and shows how attention to disability sheds new light on texts’ arrangement and use of bodies. It also traces how the representation of the disabled body shaped and signalled different generic traditions in nineteenth-century fiction, and explores how shifting attitudes to disability have affected the critical reception of nineteenth-century novels. This study establishes that disability was in itself a major preoccupation for nineteenth-century novelists, but also argues that it was a concept which enabled them to test the possibilities and limitations of the marriage plot, to explore questions of social and narrative justice, and to probe the connection between embodiment and identity. The nineteenth-century novel threw open the question of who might be worth writing about: this book uses disabled characters as test cases who push the limits of the novel’s inclusivity, and lay bare its organising structures. By showing that categorising characters according to their embodiment has been as vital to the organisation of novels as the dis/ability system is to the organisation of society, this study shows how disability can provide a new vantage point from which to narrate the story of the nineteenth-century novel.

African American candidates for statewide office in the United States face unique challenges given the nation’s complicated racial dynamics. At the dawn of the twenty-first century, the United States had elected only one African American as governor in its history—L. Douglas Wilder, a grandson of slaves who achieved this historic goal in 1989 in Virginia, once the capital of the Confederacy. Numerous media accounts at the time declared a major breakthrough in racial politics in the United States with one national news magazine actually featuring in bold type on its cover “The End of the Civil War.” More than thirty years since Wilder’s election, while Black candidates have risen to office in states such as Illinois, Massachusetts, and California, there are not many successes for African American candidates seeking statewide office in the South. This is particularly puzzling because Blacks are most numerous in the South, as a percentage of the population. This book includes analyses of the campaigns of mostly unsuccessful and some successful Black statewide candidates in the South. The purpose is to untangle the factors that lead to electoral success for these candidates, and those that continue to hold them back, from the vantage of recent election cycles with some historically close races in the South featuring African American candidates for governor of Florida and Georgia (2018), for lieutenant governor in Virginia (2017), and for the US Senate in South Carolina and Georgia (2020). But statewide contests are not limited to state offices; some of the most important southern campaigns in the twenty-first century have featured Black candidates running in the southern presidential primaries. Most notably, Barack Obama’s 2008 nomination campaign blazed a trail in the South that many believed was a template for a new style of black politics. Examining broader regional demographic and political trends, the authors project that the South is on the threshold of a major breakthrough for African American statewide candidates, which will have a substantial role in not only fundamentally changing the political dynamics of the region, but nationally as well. This change will be driven by not only African American candidates and voters but a rising coalition regionally of minorities and also White voters increasingly willing to vote for Black candidates.

Abstract This chapter looks back at how safety and security have developed in hazardous technologies and activities, explaining what has become an intersection between the two in both strategies and management practices. We argue for the connection to be made between social expectations of safe and secure societies and the limits to management and technical performance. In the first part of the chapter, conceptual similarities and differences are addressed and we distinguish three scientific and contextual vantage points for addressing how safety and security are converging: the conceptual approach, the technical and methodological approach, and the management and practice approach. We then go on to show that, as professional areas, safety and security have developed in different ways and supported by quite separate scientific and technological fields. Finally, we present the organization of the book.

AbstractIn this chapter, we examine the association between forgiveness and flourishing. We begin by identifying what forgiveness and flourishing are. We then move to considering conceptual models as well as evidence supporting the connection between forgiveness and flourishing. An early model of the forgiveness and mental health relationship offers a beginning in this regard. Next, we examine the stress-and-coping models of forgiveness of oneself and others. The final model is the scaffolding self and social systems model of forgiveness and subjective well-being. These models offer multiple vantage points from which to consider the forgiveness-flourishing connection. Limitations to these models and to the current state of knowledge on forgiveness and flourishing are highlighted, especially the limits to comprehensive assessment of flourishing in the extant literature. Conclusions and future directions for studying and promoting flourishing in people of different religious affiliation, cultures, countries, and life-circumstances are discussed in closing.

“Hyperreals, Limits, and Continuity” tackles the usual limit and continuity questions, but from the vantage point of the hyperreal numbers instead of the classic epsilon–delta definitions. The chapter begins with arithmetic on infinitesimals, infinite numbers, and hyperreals in general, including a discussion of different “levels” of numbers. Next comes approximation in the hyperreals, upon which the unique procedures of this text are based. Evaluating functions at hyperreal numbers allows readers to practice the calculations involved in finding limits before encountering limits per se. The concept of limit, and calculations of limits, are then very straightforward and are based directly on the (infinitesimal) definition of limit. Exercises on verifying continuity of a function make intuitive sense in this formulation of calculus, and evaluating limits using continuity is delayed until after continuity has been explored. The chapter ends with a very natural discussion of slope, velocity, and rate of change.

This chapter charts the formal repeal of Asian exclusion from the vantage point of the Japanese American Citizens League and of other Americans involved in the postwar campaigns that culminated in the 1952 McCarran-Walter Act. Generally known as a Cold War measure, the law’s lesser known provisions formally ended Asian exclusion as a feature of U.S. immigration and naturalization policy. But a “colonial quota” amendment spurred protest by African and Afro-Caribbean American activists, who denounced it as an underhanded attempt by racist lawmakers to end black immigration from the Caribbean. This little-known episode of black-Japanese conflict problematizes an easy analogy between postwar legislative gains for Asian Americans and those for black Americans as wholly complementary developments; to the contrary, it identifies the postwar immigration debates as a site of greater intergroup competition than collaboration.

This chapter explores the moderate political approaches of elite Black women from between the ratification of the 1940 Constitution and the 1950s. The Constitution granted full legal equality to all Cuban citizens. Subsequently, many elite women of African descent bridged professional labor with membership in civic associations. While some civic associations provided elite Blacks access to state resources and opportunities to socialize, others allowed a privileged multiracial membership to influence state reforms. By the late 1940s, sexism within Black civic clubs, in particular, led many elite African-descended women to establish independent groups that promoted national progress from their vantage point. They utilized the press to circulate their ideas about structural inequities—particularly the failures of Cuba’s education system. Indeed, schools became a critical site for pursuing social equality. Such strategies enabled elite black women to pursue reforms outside of political parties, as few women of any race held elected positions.

This essay examines several world historical events from an unfamiliar perspective, that of sixteenth-century Morocco. It seeks to provide a new way of conceptualizing empires, one that builds upon recent work, while imagining them differently. As a key player in the struggle over the western Mediterranean, Morocco’s neglected history has much to tell us about both the power and the limits of the military revolution of early modern times. Moreover, Morocco’s success in withstanding Iberian efforts to extend the reconquista to Northwest Africa served to deflect the expansionary energies across the Atlantic and around Africa. More generally, Morocco provides a useful vantage point for thinking about the emergence of the international structures of power that define the early modern world.

This chapter proposes a framework for identifying and recognising precarity based on qualitative research. It begins with a discussion of the context for precarity from the vantage point of the author’s background and broader theoretical influences. Next, challenges associated with recognizing and measuring precarity are presented. The chapter then turns to the methods used to detect precarity in two research studies, with a focus on four markers of precarity: uncertainty; limited access to appropriate services; the importance of maintaining independence, and; cumulative pressures. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the contribution made from the research studies as a means to inform future research.

While much has been written about social worker migration to the northern hemisphere, prior to the current decade little was known about the experiences of social workers, with professional qualifications gained elsewhere, who were practising in Aotearoa New Zealand. The cultural context of Aotearoa New Zealand brings particular challenges to transnational social workers, and their professional perspectives were little understood. Both qualitative and quantitative strategies were used in a three-phase project to gain greater insight. The findings provided understanding into the nature of the transitional experience for migrant professionals and new vantage points on views of social work as practised in different contexts. We identify perceptions reflecting ‘enduring professional dislocation’ arising from limits to the portability of any ‘universal’ constructs of social work and demonstrating the need for structured support and education for transnational social workers.

This chapter maps ethical dilemmas surrounding transitional justice. Transitional justice itself might be best thought of as a wicked problem, since it involves thinking about how societies moving away from authoritarianism or armed conflict to peace and democratic rule reckon with legacies of violence and impunity. The author’s work in South Africa provides a vantage point to examine profound problems in a number of contexts. These include questions of how to balance possibly divisive demands for accountability and economic redistribution with calls for societal reconciliation, which may happen at the expense of victims and historically marginalized groups. These dilemmas become especially acute when incoming political leaders are constrained in their ability to address the past. A failure to look back may limit the use of institutions like truth and reconciliation commissions to engage with issues of justice, reconciliation, and trauma.

Motion preservation of the cervical spine has been attractive from several vantage points. Clinically, the ability to limit adjacent level disease has been an important consideration. In addition, the cervical loading conditions may not be as demanding compared to other spinal segments, e.g., the lumbar region. Thus, devices that are designed to preserve motion for the cervical spine are widely perceived as promising technologies and require new methods of evaluation in order to more accurately predict clinical performance.

In recent years, IB has seen significant advances in the field of nonmarket research and in the development of nonmarket strategies (NMS) aimed at improving the performance of firms by adequately tackling nonmarket challenges. By the 2020s, companies have also adopted a pro- active posture in nonmarket domains, i.e. by pursuing corporate social responsibility as well as corporate political activity. However, this shift had accounted only for what from the vantage point of today seems limited instability in and risks stemming from the nonmarket domain. Events of the early 2020s - the COVID-19 crisis, Ukraine War, and the seething US- China tensions, have heralded an era of extreme uncertainty for IB. This research note is a prelude to a conceptual paper that grapples with the ongoing global challenges for MNEs, and contemplates a new approach to formulating NMS that corresponds to the gravity of the risks posed by the changing nonmarket environment.

Introdução: A hipertensão pulmonar em recém-nascido é um problema comum com característica e mortalidade significativas e limita a quantidade de sangue que vai para os pulmões. O uso de óxido nítrico (NO) é um vasodilatador que relaxa o músculo liso e eleva os níveis de oxigênio no sangue, sendo uma opção de tratamento para essa patologia. É necessário analisar as condições dessa utilização. Foi observado que o tratamento não inclui pacientes com hérnia diafragmática bem como reduz o uso de oxigenação por membrana extracorporal (ECMO) em pacientes que fizeram o tratamento. Objetivo: Esse artigo de revisão objetiva analisar a viabilidade de conduzir o uso do óxido nítrico no tratamento da hipertensão pulmonar em neonatos, avaliando os resultados, os efeitos e o perfil de segurança. Método: Este artigo é uma revisão bibliográfica de caráter analítico. Foi utilizado como base de dados para pesquisa os periódicos indexados no PubMed e os descritores pesquisados no DeCS para refinar a busca foram: Nitric Oxide; pulmonary hypertension; neonates. Os critérios de inclusão utilizados foram artigos que dissertam sobre o uso do NO como tratamento da hipertensão pulmonar em neonatos, publicados entre 2011 e 2021. Os critérios de exclusão foram por não abranger completamente o assunto proposto. Conforme esses critérios, foram selecionados 9 artigos para a realização dessa redação. Desenvolvimento: A utilização do óxido nítrico não causa sequelas no neurodesenvolvimento, mas dosagem baixas podem desempenhar toxicidade celular. Além disso, o NO reduz a necessidade de uso de ECMO, visto que essa possui muitas complicações e é uma vantagem no tratamento não a utilizar. As complicações incluem: hipotensão, metemoglobinemia, vasoespasmo pulmonar e piora da insuficiência cardíaca. O uso do NO também reduz os gastos hospitalares, tanto evitando o uso de ECMO, quanto diminuindo o tempo de internação do paciente. Conclusão: Em virtude do que foi mencionado, a inalação de óxido nítrico pode melhorar significativamente a oxigenação e evitar a progressão para gravidade do quadro clínico, sendo reconhecido como terapia eficaz para bebês a termo e a curto prazo com insuficiência respiratória hipóxica, com exceção daqueles com hérnia diafragmática. Ao atuar como um vasodilatador endógeno, ele encurta o tempo de tratamento, já que aumenta o suprimento de oxigênio e reduz a pressão da artéria pulmonar.
