The photocatalytic activity of magnetic bentonite, Fe3O4 nanoparticles decorated Al-pillared bentonite (Fe3O4/Al-B), for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) in the presence of H2O2 under visible light (VL) was evaluated. The effects of different reaction parameters such as catalyst dose, dye concentration and externally added H2O2 were also investigated. The magnetic bentonite showed good photocatalytic activity, magnetic separability and stability for repeated use. More than 95% of 40 mg/L RhB was converted within 3 h under VL with a catalyst dose of 0.5 g/L. Suitable mechanisms have been proposed to account for the photocatalytic activities in the presence and absence of H2O2. The efficiency of H2O2 in VL process was much higher than that of the dark process. Results obtained in the current study may be useful to develop a suitable photocatalyst for photocatalytic remediation of different water contaminants including organic dyes.

Nematic liquid crystal cells were subjected to different DC magnetic fields and the optical transmission of a He-Ne laser beam was recorded for different field values. It was found that a small addition of Methyl Orange (MO) induced optical activity into the nematic sample. When the cells were subjected to increasing magnetic field, the rotatory power (rotation angle) varied periodically; the same occurred for the light transmission and ellipticity. We found that the light emerging from the liquid crystal cell is elliptically polarized and in some cases circularly polarized. After UV light irradiation (365 nm) the rotatory power of the sample increases. The position of rotation angle maxima and minima is slightly affected by the irradiation.

Our report is the first example describing the successful synthesis of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs), for which we used pulsed-laser induced photolysis (PLIP). Compared with the previous method of using pulsed-laser ablation of a target, or strong energy of pulsed-laser light to decompose precursors in generating a solvated-ion reaction, the PLIP method used here is dependent on hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to generate a hydrolysis reaction. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to demonstrate the Fe3O4 crystalline structure of the synthesized NPs. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed that the average size of the NPs was about 20–50 nm. Regarding their magnetic characteristics, the synthesized NPs exhibited a saturation magnetization of 5.62 emu/g, remanence of 3.82 emu/g, and coercive force of 49.8 Oe. The photocatalytic experiments confirmed that the synthesized magnetic Fe3O4 NPs have visible light-degradation effects based on their ability to photocatalytically degrade methylene blue (MB). The MB degradation efficiency was 60–80% under white-light exposure for 180 min. This study presents a new route for synthesizing magnetic Fe3O4 NPs for their potential use in photocatalysis.

A magnetic nanostructure for auto-oscillation, induced by spin-transfer torque, is fabricated by cosputtering permalloy with cobalt. Although the system does not meet the critical size and current requirements for direct auto-oscillation, magnetic signals resulting from spin wave excitation and magnetic fluctuations are measured by a Brillouin light scattering (BLS) system. From the analysis of the BLS spectrum, the threshold current for auto-oscillation is estimated to be 27.3% lower in Py1− xCo x ( x = 0.2095) than in Py1− xCo x ( x = 0.0). It is surmised that the cobalt in permalloy improves the efficiency of transferring spin toque for auto-oscillation.

AbstractIn quantum materials, degeneracies and frustrated interactions can have a profound impact on the emergence of long-range order, often driving strong fluctuations that suppress functionally relevant electronic or magnetic phases1–7. Engineering the atomic structure in the bulk or at heterointerfaces has been an important research strategy to lift these degeneracies, but these equilibrium methods are limited by thermodynamic, elastic and chemical constraints8. Here we show that all-optical, mode-selective manipulation of the crystal lattice can be used to enhance and stabilize high-temperature ferromagnetism in YTiO3, a material that shows only partial orbital polarization, an unsaturated low-temperature magnetic moment and a suppressed Curie temperature, Tc = 27 K (refs. 9–13). The enhancement is largest when exciting a 9 THz oxygen rotation mode, for which complete magnetic saturation is achieved at low temperatures and transient ferromagnetism is realized up to Tneq > 80 K, nearly three times the thermodynamic transition temperature. We interpret these effects as a consequence of the light-induced dynamical changes to the quasi-degenerate Ti t2g orbitals, which affect the magnetic phase competition and fluctuations found in the equilibrium state14–20. Notably, the light-induced high-temperature ferromagnetism discovered in our work is metastable over many nanoseconds, underscoring the ability to dynamically engineer practically useful non-equilibrium functionalities.

Hall-effect in semiconductors has wide applications for magnetic field sensing. Yet, a standard Hall sensor retains two problems: its linearity is affected by the non-uniformity of the current distribution; the sensitivity is bias-dependent, with linearity decreasing with increasing bias current. In order to improve the performance, we here propose a novel structure which realizes bias-free, photo-induced Hall sensors. The system consists of a semi-transparent metal Pt and a semiconductor Si or GaAs to form a Schottky contact. We systematically compared the photo-induced Schottky behaviors and Hall effects without net current flowing, depending on various magnetic fields, light intensities and wavelengths of Pt/GaAs and Pt/Si junctions. The electrical characteristics of the Schottky photo-diodes were fitted to obtain the barrier height as a function of light intensity. We show that the open-circuit Hall voltage of Pt/GaAs junction is orders of magnitude lower than that of Pt/Si, and the barrier height of GaAs is smaller. It should be attributed to the surface states in GaAs which block the carrier drifting. This work not only realizes the physical investigations of photo-induced Hall effects in Pt/GaAs and Pt/Si Schottky junctions, but also opens a new pathway for bias-free magnetic sensing with high linearity and sensitivity comparing to commercial Hall-sensors.

Beltrami-shaped graphene sheets have been recently proposed as analogs of curved spacetimes with Hawking–Unruh effects detected through typical condensed matter measurements involving scanning tunneling microscopes and spectroscopy. However, such deformed sheets, if ever fabricated, will contain large strain-induced pseudo-magnetic fields with important guiding effects on the motion of the electrons in the conduction band. Besides, possible surface polariton and plasmon modes are known to be important players in the radiative heat transfer which takes place in the natural near-field nanoscale experimental conditions. Therefore, we suggest that the latter class of experiments could shed light on phenomena related to the black hole membrane paradigm instead.

Most digital information today is encoded in the magnetization of ferromagnetic domains. The demand for ever-increasing storage space fuels continuous research for energy-efficient manipulation of magnetism at smaller and smaller length scales. Writing a bit is usually achieved by rotating the magnetization of domains of the magnetic medium, which relies on effective magnetic fields. An alternative approach is to change the magnetic state directly by acting on the interaction between magnetic moments. Correlated oxides are ideal materials for this because the effects of a small external control parameter are amplified by the electronic correlations. Here, we present a radical method for reversible, light-induced tuning of ferromagnetism at room temperature using a halide perovskite/oxide perovskite heterostructure. We demonstrate that photoinduced charge carriers from theCH3NH3PbI3photovoltaic perovskite efficiently dope the thinLa0.7Sr0.3MnO3film and decrease the magnetization of the ferromagnetic state, allowing rapid rewriting of the magnetic bit. This manipulation could be accomplished at room temperature; hence this opens avenues for magnetooptical memory devices.

Due to their excellent magnetic properties, amorphous metallic alloys (AMAs) are considered for the construction of magnetic cores of radio-frequency cavities in accelerators. Here, they might be exposed to ion bombardment. The influence of irradiation by both light and heavy ions featuring low and high energies, respectively, is followed by the techniques of 57Fe Mössbauer spectrometry. Modifications of surface layers in selected Fe-containing AMAs after ion irradiation are unveiled by detection of conversion electrons and photons of characteristic radiation whereas those in their bulk are derived from standard transmission spectra. Rearrangement of microstructure which favors the formation of magnetically active regions, is observed in surface regions bombarded by light ions. Heavy ions caused pronounced effects in the orientation of net magnetization of the irradiated samples. No measurable impact upon short-range order arrangement was observed. Part I of this paper is devoted to radiation effects in Fe-based AMAs induced by neutron irradiation.

In this study, we investigated the cytotoxicity of doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded magnetic nanofluids on 4T1 mouse tumor epithelial cells and MDA-MB-468 human triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized using sonochemical coprecipitation by applying electrohydraulic discharge treatment (EHD) in an automated chemical reactor, modified with citric acid and loaded with DOX. The resulting magnetic nanofluids exhibited strong magnetic properties and maintained sedimentation stability in physiological pH conditions. The obtained samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-spectrophotometry, dynamic light scattering (DLS), electrophoretic light scattering (ELS), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In vitro studies using the MTT method revealed a synergistic effect of the DOX-loaded citric-acid-modified magnetic nanoparticles on the inhibition of cancer cell growth and proliferation compared to treatment with pure DOX. The combination of the drug and magnetic nanosystem showed promising potential for targeted drug delivery, with the possibility of optimizing the dosage to reduce side-effects and enhance the cytotoxic effect on cancer cells. The nanoparticles’ cytotoxic effects were attributed to the generation of reactive oxygen species and the enhancement of DOX-induced apoptosis. The findings suggest a novel approach for enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of anticancer drugs and reducing their associated side-effects. Overall, the results demonstrate the potential of DOX-loaded citric-acid-modified magnetic nanoparticles as a promising strategy in tumor therapy, and provide insights into their synergistic effects.

Assessing the risk of using optocouplers in satellite applications offers challenges that incorporate those of commercial off-the-shelf devices compounded by hybrid module construction techniques. In this paper, we discuss these challenges with regard to radiation-induced effects, e.g., single event transients in the photodiodes and displacement damage effects in light emitting diodes. Radiation-induced effects can depend on several important variables including circuit application, radiation environment, annealing, temperature, and others. Despite the ominous list of test variables above, it is possible to make a conservative estimate of optocoupler performance in the space radiation environment. However, these predictions could result in an overestimation of on-orbit performance by an order of magnitude or more.

We present a new photoswitchable spin label for light-induced pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance dipolar spectroscopy (LiPDS), the photoexcited triplet state of erythrosin B (EB), which is ideal for biological applications. With this label, we perform an in-depth study of the orientational effects in dipolar traces acquired using the refocused laser-induced magnetic dipole technique to obtain information on the distance and relative orientation between the EB and nitroxide labels in a rigid model peptide, in good agreement with density functional theory predictions. Additionally, we show that these orientational effects can be averaged to enable an orientation-independent analysis to determine the distance distribution. Furthermore, we demonstrate the feasibility of these experiments above liquid nitrogen temperatures, removing the need for expensive liquid helium or cryogen-free cryostats. The variety of choices in photoswitchable spin labels and the affordability of the experiments are critical for LiPDS to become a widespread methodology in structural biology.

Construction of a calorimetry system, by which the light irradiation to the surface area of molecular crystals at extremely low temperatures can be possible is reported. The development was performed based on the relaxation calorimetry technique to evaluate electronic structure using small amount of samples of molecular compounds where the electron correlation effects and electron–lattice coupling effects induce drastic change of the ground state. Detection of electronic structure changes occur as the light-induced phenomena becomes possible by this type of calorimetry apparatus. We report on the detailed structure of the small-sized calorimetry cells constructed for this purpose as well as the design of the calorimeter. The experimental results using organic superconductor and magnetic materials are given, which substantiate that the absolute value measurements under light irradiation are promising using the developed systems. Further possibility is also discussed.

We investigated photo-induced effects in Ge-Ga-Se films. It was found that, thermal annealing causes the increase of the bandgap in the as-prepared films, and all three annealed films show photodarkening (PD) behavior with light illumination but the change of optical bandgap is minimum in Ge25 film. Such PD behavior can be recovered by reannealing of the film. The kinetic process of Tf/Ti exhibits part recovering of PD during the cycle of laser on and off. Moreover, no obvious structural change can be observed in the Raman spectra of the films at different states, especially in that of Ge25 film.

Abstract Optogenetically driven manipulation of circuit-specific activity enables causality studies, but its global brain-wide effect is rarely reported. Here, we applied simultaneous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and calcium recording with optogenetic activation of the corpus callosum (CC) connecting barrel cortices (BC). Robust positive BOLD was detected in the ipsilateral BC due to antidromic activity, spreading to the ipsilateral motor cortex (MC), and posterior thalamus (PO). In the orthodromic target, positive BOLD was reliably evoked by 2 Hz light pulses, whereas 40 Hz light pulses led to reduced calcium, indicative of CC-mediated inhibition. This presumed optogenetic CC-mediated inhibition was further elucidated by pairing light pulses with whisker stimulation at varied interstimulus intervals. Whisker-induced positive BOLD and calcium signals were reduced at intervals of 50/100 ms. The calcium-amplitude-modulation-based correlation with whole-brain fMRI signal revealed that the inhibitory effects spread to contralateral BC, ipsilateral MC, and PO. This work raises the need for fMRI to elucidate the brain-wide network activation in response to optogenetic stimulation.

AbstractIn a laser-driven atomic quantum system, a continuous state couples to a discrete state resulting in quantum interference that provides a transmission peak within a broad absorption profile the so-called electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In the field of plasmonic metamaterials, the sub-wavelength metallic structures play a role similar to atoms in nature. The interference of their near-field coupling at plasmonic resonance leads to a plasmon induced transparency (PIT) that is analogous to the EIT of atomic systems. A sensitive control of the PIT is crucial to a range of potential applications such as slowing light and biosensor. So far, the PIT phenomena often arise from the electric resonance, such as an electric dipole state coupled to an electric quadrupole state. Here we report the first three-dimensional photonic metamaterial consisting of an array of erected U-shape plasmonic gold nanostructures that exhibits PIT phenomenon with magnetic dipolar interaction between magnetic metamolecules. We further demonstrate using a numerical simulation that the coupling between the different excited pathways at an intermediate resonant wavelength allows for a π phase shift resulting in a destructive interference. A classical RLC circuit was also proposed to explain the coupling effects between the bright and dark modes of EIT-like electromagnetic spectra. This work paves a promising approach to achieve magnetic plasmon devices.

A major issue in the industrial sector is the highly efficient and economical treatment of hazardous dye-based colour effluents. Spinel ferrite nanoparticles are more prominent for their unique qualities, such as their optical, catalytic, electrical, and magnetic properties. Moreover, physical characteristics of ferrites may be influenced as well as their catalytic properties by substituting metals like magnesium. In this context, herein, MgxCu0.5-xCd0.5Fe2O4 (x=0.1 to 0.5, and Δx=0.1) nano-ferrites were employed to examine the photodecomposition of methylene blue (MB) under visible light. To optimize the reaction conditions, the effects of different operational parameters including irradiation time span, catalyst amount, initial dye concentration, and pH for the degradation of MB dye were investigated. The maximum degradation efficiency of 93.54% was obtained by using 1 g/L catalyst and 10 ppm MB dye at pH 10 within 120 min reaction time. These results demonstrate the applicability of the Mg2+ doped Cu-Cd ferrite samples for water remediation.
