Résumé :
This paper presents an optimization-based method for predicting a human dynamic lifting task. The three-dimensional digital human skeletal model has 55 degrees of freedom. Lifting motion is generated by minimizing an objective function (human performance measure) subjected to basic physical and kinematical constraints. Four objective functions are investigated in the formulation: the dynamic effort, the balance criterion, the maximum shear force at spine joint and the maximum pressure force at spine joint. The simulation results show that various human performance measures predict different lifting strategies: the balance and shear force performance measures predict back-lifting motion and the dynamic effort and pressure force performance measures generate squat-lifting motion. In addition, the effects of box locations on the lifting strategies are also studied. All kinematics and kinetic data are successfully predicted for the lifting motion by using the predictive dynamics algorithm and the optimal solution was obtained in about one minute.

Résumé :
Lifting tasks, among manual material handling activities, are those mainly associated with low back pain. In recent years, several instrumental-based tools were developed to quantitatively assess the biomechanical risk during lifting activities. In this study, parameters related to balance and extracted from the Centre of Pressure (CoP) data series are studied in fatiguing frequency-dependent lifting activities to: i) explore the possibility of classifying people with LBP and asymptomatic people during the execution of task; ii) examine the assessment of the risk levels associated with repetitive lifting activities, iii) enhance current understanding of postural control strategies during lifting tasks. Data were recorded from 14 asymptomatic participants and 7 participants with low back pain. The participants performed lifting tasks in three different lifting conditions (with increasing lifting frequency and risk levels) and kinetic and surface electromyography (sEMG) data were acquired. Kinetic data were used to calculated the CoP and parameters extracted from the latter show a discriminant capacity for the groups and the risk levels. Furthermore, sEMG parameters show a trend compatible with myoelectric manifestations of muscular fatigue. Correlation results between sEMG and CoP velocity parameters revealed a positive correlation between amplitude sEMG parameters and CoP velocity in both groups and a negative correlation between frequency sEMG parameters and CoP velocity. The current findings suggest that it is possible to quantitatively assess the risk level when monitoring fatiguing lifting tasks by using CoP parameters as well as identify different motor strategies between people with and without LBP.

Résumé :
This paper presents an index that quantitatively characterizes different dynamic postural strategies employed during sagittal plane lifting. The dynamic lifting strategy is analyzed in the velocity domain as a strategy of partitioning postural changes between the torso and leg segments. The index consists of two parameters, assigned to two leg segments, which quantify their contributions relative to the torso. Parameter values, ranging from 0.1 to 10, are estimated through a simple enumeration search. The use of this index is illustrated by applying it to 24 lifting movements performed by six subjects using either a back-lift or a leg-lift strategy. Results suggest that a lifting strategy, in terms of whether the leg or the back is the prime mover, can be well characterized by this simple two-parameter index. It not only differentiates the two distinct general postural strategies, but also discerns non-distinct intermediate ones by quantifying the involvement of each segment in a lifting movement.

Résumé :
Lifting tasks are manual material-handling activities and are commonly associated with work-related low back disorders. Instrument-based assessment tools are used to quantitatively assess the biomechanical risk associated with lifting activities. This study aims at highlighting different motor strategies in people with and without low back pain (LBP) during fatiguing frequency-dependent lifting tasks by using parameters of muscle coactivation. A total of 15 healthy controls (HC) and eight people with LBP performed three lifting tasks with a progressively increasing lifting index (LI), each lasting 15 min. Bilaterally erector spinae longissimus (ESL) activity and rectus abdominis superior (RAS) were recorded using bipolar surface electromyography systems (sEMG), and the time-varying multi-muscle coactivation function (TMCf) was computed. The TMCf can significantly discriminate each pair of LI and it is higher in LBP than HC. Collectively, our findings suggest that it is possible to identify different motor strategies between people with and without LBP. The main finding shows that LBP, to counteract pain, coactivates the trunk muscles more than HC, thereby adopting a strategy that is stiffer and more fatiguing.

Résumé :
PurposeThis paper provides evidence based quantification of both “actual” disruption of industries as well as a measure of disruption “hype”. The data cover a seven-year period from 2012 to 2018 across 12 industries. The authors’ complemented the research with a survey of 2000 business executives. Whereas there has been some measures of disruption in the past, no research to the authors’ knowledge has been conducted that measure both actual disruption and disruption hype.Design/methodology/approachThe current fascination with disruption hides an awkward truth, we assume it is happening, but do we really know for sure? Disruption is rarely defined and almost never measured. Equally, the influence of the hype around disruption is hard to gauge. The authors do not know to what extent hype is driving management action. This is worrisome as the disruption “noise level” can lead to unhealthy collective thinking and bad business decision-making. Some rigour is required. To craft winning strategies, executives should take a more evidence-based approach for managing disruption.FindingsThe authors’ failed to find evidence of any correlation between the hype around an industry disruption and actual disruption within that industry. So the important conclusion for executives is “do not believe the hype”. We found some surprising differences by industry between actual disruption and the hype by industry.Research limitations/implicationsDisruption is one of the most talked about subject in the field of strategy, yet there is little quantification. With this research, the authors’ aim is to advance the fact-based understanding of disruption. Disruption hype is never measured but has a strong influence on executives. The authors have quantified hype using online, search, social media and survey sources. Much more is needed to be able to measure hype more accurately.Practical implicationsThe authors’ recommend a set of practical guidelines for executives to support fact-based strategy formulation: analysis of actual disruption, scenario planning and strategic responses.Social implicationsThe “noise” around industry disruption is so high that it is assumed to happen. Much of what is written is quasi-fake news. The authors need to rebalance the debate with fact-based analysis.Originality/valueTo authors’ knowledge, there has never been any fact-based analysis of both actual and hype disruption levels.

Résumé :
Manual lifting is one of the common practices used in the industries to transport or move objects to a desired place. Nowadays, even though mechanized equipment is widely available, manual lifting is still considered as an essential way to perform material handling task. Improper lifting strategies may contribute to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), where overexertion contributes as the highest factor. To overcome this problem, electromyography (EMG) signal is used to monitor the workers’ muscle condition and to find maximum lifting load, lifting height and number of repetitions that the workers are able to handle before experiencing fatigue to avoid overexertion. Past researchers have introduced several EMG processing techniques and different EMG features that represent fatigue indices in time, frequency, and time-frequency domain. The impact of EMG processing based measures in fatigue assessment during manual lifting are reviewed in this paper. It is believed that this paper will greatly benefit researchers who need a bird’s eye view of the biosignal processing which are currently available, thus determining the best possible techniques for lifting applications.

This research proposes a simple way to identify the key factors influencing operations of organizations. Compared with literatures which verify their factors by reviewing past researches, this research proposes key factors from the aggregate environmental perspective, and develops ridership promotion strategies for further analysis. Kaohsiung mass rapid transit (MRT) system, which consists of red and orange lines, has operated for two years since September, 2008. It carries only about 120 thousand people per day, which is still far away from the expected volume of 360 thousand people, let alone the breakeven level of 440 thousand. Because of the accessibility of the main lines, insufficiency of its shuttle bus network, and comparatively low utilization of public transportation systems in Kaohsiung, the ridership of Kaohsiung MRT system has no significant improvement. Such situation causes continuing loss and makes KRTC fall into a financial crisis. This research use SWOT analysis to investigate the factors affecting ridership, and then pick up the crucial ones by fuzzy Delphi from those factors through expert questionnaire to confirm the criteria. Recommended ridership promotion strategies from both short-run and long-run perspectives are made through strategy diamond and TOWS matrix. Furthermore, by analyzing with Fuzzy Analytic Network Process (FANP), we can obtain the weight and order of each criterion and strategy from different experts. The result indicates that there are 15 criteria picked out by experts. Experts has defined 5 criteria which are most significant by the order of “people depend heavily on motorbike,” “government supports development of public transit,” “policy of controlling private vehicles,” “high quality of transportation service,” and “insufficient accessibility of MRT system.” The most important strategies are “re-planning the whole network of public transit” for long-run, and “coordination of transfer between public transit systems” for short-run. According to clustering analysis, the result indicates that some differences in criteria and strategies exist in different groups. The result can be provided for related authorities for improving and planning strategies in the future.

Résumé :
The neglected topic of Mid-Republican building technology prior to the advent of concrete in the mid-second century is treated here. A close reading of Vitruvius’ De Architectura in combination with study of archaeological remains helps document two major technological changes: the strategic blending of building stones according to each stone’s physical properties, and the proliferation of lifting machines to raise heavy loads at building sites. Such developments depended upon close knowledge of building stones imported from Central Italy to Rome, and there are reasons to think that knowledge traveled with masons themselves. Thus, technological change speaks to labor migration, and relates similar shifts in the urban labor supply during the third and early-second century as those described by the previous chapter.

Résumé :
William Tecumseh Sherman, a West Point graduate and veteran of the Seminole War, became one of the best-known generals in the Civil War. His March to the Sea, which resulted in a devastated swath of the South from Atlanta to Savannah, cemented his place in history as the pioneer of total war. This book offers a life and times account of Sherman. By examining his childhood and education, his business ventures in California, his antebellum leadership of a military college in Louisiana, and numerous career false starts, the book shows how unlikely his exceptional Civil War career would seem. It also demonstrates how crucial his family was to his professional path, particularly his wife’s intervention during the war. It analyzes Sherman’s development as a battlefield commander and especially his crucial friendships with Henry W. Halleck and Ulysses S. Grant. In doing so, the text details how Sherman overcame both his weaknesses as a leader and severe depression to mature as a military strategist. Central chapters narrate closely Sherman’s battlefield career and the gradual lifting of his pessimism that the Union would be defeated. After the war, Sherman became a popular figure in the North and the founder of the school for officers at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, known as the “intellectual center of the army.” The book argues that Sherman was not hostile to the South throughout his life and only in later years gained a reputation as a villain who practiced barbaric destruction, particularly as the neo-Confederate Lost Cause grew and he published one of the first personal accounts of the war.

Résumé :
The chapter is dedicated to the research and analysis of positive practices implemented by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Russia amid the COVID-19 pandemic. From 2016 to 2019, small and medium-sized business has most developed in such spheres as services, trade, construction, industrial production, and agriculture. The introduction of strict quarantine measures had a negative impact on the financial condition of all economic sectors; therefore, the most affected industries of the Russian economy have been identified. The chapter considers the positive practices used by SMEs operating in the affected industries such as tourism and hotel business, food service industry, and fitness industry. When the borders were closed and after the lifting of severe restrictions, domestic tourism saw the fastest development. The research that was carried out showed that amid strict isolation, only food service establishments that managed to adopt a new mode of services—connection to aggregators, organization of meals delivery to clients, take-away orders—were able to continue operating.

This chapter looks at how William James seemingly provided mankind with neither more nor less than a reckless license for “wishful thinking.” It examines both the grounds that have been offered for that objection and the varied strategies that a number of James' defenders have adopted in answering it. The chapter also demonstrates how John Hick's criticism has succeeded in provoking reams of impassioned discussion. For the moment, though, it should be noted that he arrives at his remarkably economical distillation of James' argument, first, by ignoring a number of refinements that James considered important to making his case, and, secondly, by lifting his proof-quotations out of the refining contexts that lend them their exact point and bearing on the argument.

Résumé :
The oil palm (Elaies guineensis Jacq) is the largest produced and highly traded vegetable oil globally yet has the lowest cost of production and significantly higher productivity compared to other oil crops. The crop has the potential of alleviating poverty for smallholders and lifting the economies of countries with large scale production notably, Malaysia and Indonesia and currently on high demand for use as biofuel feedstock. Irrespective of these advantages of the oil palm, there is a global concern on the devastating impact of the crop on the environment and ecosystem during plantation developments and expansions. Deforestation, biodiversity loss, water and air pollution and toxic compounds from palm oil mill effluents (POME) are some of the negative impacts of the oil palm. For the industry to be more beneficial and impactful globally, sustainability strategies becomes urgent need. Sustainability strategies such as increasing the yield of oil palm, precision agriculture, sustainability certification, support for smallholders and circular economy have been put across to curtail the negative impacts of oil palm expansion.

Résumé :
This chapter is about the experiences had by women in the printing industry in the second half of the twentieth century. Focusing on the stories of three women – a tablehand, a senior manager and a printing apprentice – the chapter explores how women in the printing industry coped with the shifting challenges of a patriarchal printing environment. One of the threads holding these three stories together is the presence of design and embodied experience; each of these narratives speaks of something made, designed or physically manipulated, be it spatial, environmental or technological. The active making and re-making of things and spaces, and the forming of embodied knowledge about machinery and industrial objects, were strategies that female workers mobilised in order to survive challenging and often discriminatory circumstances. The contentious politics lifting – and associated legal limitations – is evaluated, revealing a disjuncture between workplace rhetoric and actual embodied practice.

This paper reports the variability in muscle recruitment strategies among individuals who operate a non-powered lifting device for general assembly (GA) tasks. Support vector machine (SVM) was applied to the classification of motion states of operators using electromyography (EMG) signals collected from a total of 15 upper limb, lower limb, shoulder, and torso muscles. By comparing the classification performance and muscle activity features, variability in muscle recruitment strategy was observed from lower limb and torso muscles, while the recruitment strategies of upper limb and shoulder muscles were relatively consistent across subjects. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to identify key muscles that are highly correlated with body movements. Selected muscles at the wrist joint, ankle joint and scapula are considered to have greater significance in characterizing the muscle recruitment strategies than other investigated muscles. PCA loading factors also indicate the existence of body motion redundancy during typical pick-and-place tasks.

Résumé :
One method of improving temporary rigging processes during shipbuilding is through the use of lifting lugs integrated directly into ship’s structure rather than traditional weld on/burn off padeyes. This method relies on a the inherent strength of a ships bulkhead to lift an assembly rather than a traditional padeye, and reduces the efforts involved in the installation, removal, and repair of the area around a temporary padeye. The application of ASME Below-The-Hook design guidance to such lifting strategies is not necessarily straight forward, as one of the main causes of failure for thin plate pin connections is dishing, a form of tripping or buckling of the plate near the lifting hole. This paper presents results from the destructive testing of several such lifting lugs with specific attention paid to out of plane loads and their effect on dishing initiation.

Résumé :
Nursing is an occupation with high prevalence of low back pain (LBP). This pain is multifactorial and assessing its risk factors is essential. The study aim was to determine the prevalence and risk factors of LBP among 225 hospital nurses in Thailand in a cross-sectional study. A self-reported questionnaire divided into six parts including personal factors, working factors, job stress modified from the Nursing Stress Scale, low back pain modified from the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire, health behaviors, and work environment was used for collecting the data. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and logistic regression. Study results revealed that the prevalence of LBP in the past seven days was 34.2%. Logistic regression analysis indicated that lifting overweight patients without assistance (OR=1.8; 95%CI=0.95-3.77) and having previous diseases related to LBP (OR=6.3; 95%CI=1.65-24.32) were important risk factors of LBP. Study findings are useful for developing LBP preventive strategies including training on lifting and transferring overweight patients by using a lift team method and lifting devices, developing a manual or guidelines for safe patient handling, and treatment of LBP.
