Résumé :
Defining appropriate management units to balance productivity and yield of exploited species is fundamental to effective resource management. Anecdotal and tag–recapture information related to morphology, movement behaviour and life-history strategy suggest that separate groups of snapper (Chrysophrys auratus) exist in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand. To address the existence of discrete groups, we examined morphology, meristics and otolith chemistry from snapper collected throughout the Hauraki Gulf. We also used tag–recapture information, stable isotope analysis and interpreted functional aspects of morphology and meristics data to understand potential life-history strategy differences. Snapper from rocky reef habitats did not display morphology and meristic features distinct from snapper from soft sediment habitats and differences in otolith chemistry and stable isotope ratios could respectively be explained by a locational influence and predominance of kelp in rocky reef food webs. Conversely, snapper collected from a known spawning area had distinct morphological and meristic features consistent with semi–pelagic sparids and stable isotope analysis also indicated a potentially more pelagic and higher trophic-level diet. Maintenance of population complexity such as this is generally beneficial to fish populations, and can be achieved by revisiting the spatial units used for fishery management.

Résumé :
Substance abuse has been a topic of discussion for healthcare professionals. It involves using harmful or hazardous psychoactive substances that, if administered into one's system, can affect the mental processes. Consumption of these substances leads to societal as well as health problems among its users there by indirectly affecting their families too. These substances mainly include alcohol, tobacco, opiates, cocaine, amphetamines, hallucinogens, prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse.1,2 According to the world drug report 2020 by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), there are about 35 million people who suffer from drug use disorders and require treatment services globally.2 In India, the substance abuse epidemic in the younger generation has increased rapidly. The crucial factors which lead to these problems involve familial, social as well as individual problems. Familial issues may involve childhood maltreatment or familial substance abuse. Similarly, social issues involves deviant peer pressure and association with popular groups in order to prevent from being bullied. Individual factors which might lead to substance abuse includes depression and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).3 Its prevalence at the national level varies for different substance abuse forms, accompanied by drastic regional variations. Issues regarding treatment access and adherence concerning substance user disorders (SUD) already existed. Due to the current COVID-19 situation, drastic social and economic changes have further worsened the situation. So in this regard, newer strategies have to be brought up in place.4 It has been found that life skills education is one of the most influential activities in school-based substance abuse prevention.

Résumé :
We present a strategy for using longitudinal survey data to identify life history pathways linked with mental health outcomes. The central aim is to begin with richly detailed descriptions of individual lives and, from them, to discern generalizable features of aggregates of multiple lives. Conceptual principles guiding the organization and interpretation of life history information are summarized. Data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study (WLS) are used to illustrate the specific steps for analyzing life histories of “resilient” women (those with a history of depression who report high levels of current well-being). The steps begin with writing narratives of individual life histories, which are then reviewed for commonalities, and subsequently thinned to more generic descriptions. The process culminates with tests of distinguishability, contrasting the “resilient” with three other mental health groups. Illustrating the constructive tensions between idiographic and nomothetic analyses, our approach documents multiple life pathways to resilience. The methodology also underscores the delicate interplay between activities of the mind and machine in facilitating scientific discovery.

Résumé :
Choosing whether or not to migrate is an important life history decision for many fishes. Here we combine data from physical captures and detections on autonomous passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag antennas to study migration in an endangered fish, the humpback chub (Gila cypha). We develop hidden Markov mark–recapture models with and without antenna detections and find that the model fit without antenna detections misses a large proportion of fish and underestimates migration and survival probabilities. We then assess survival and growth differences associated with life history strategy and migration for different demographic groups (small male, small female, large male, large female). We find large differences in survival according to life history strategy, where residents had much lower overwinter survival than migrants. However, within the migratory life history strategy, survival and growth were similar for active migrants and skipped migrants for all demographic groups. We discuss some common challenges to incorporating detections from autonomous antennas into population models and demonstrate how these data can provide insight about fish movement and life history strategies.

Résumé :
Over the last decade, it has been clearly shown that the same achievements in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) projects can lead to different life cycle assessments (LCAs). However, the problem of contradictory achievements in LEED and LCA has not yet been resolved. This study aimed to identify and evaluate different strategies for LEED projects using LCAs. Thirty-nine LEED projects with the same characteristics—location and transportation, rating system, rating version, certification level, and space type—were collected and sorted by their energy and atmosphere (EA) category, “optimize energy performance” credit (EAc6) achievement into three equal groups (EALow, EAMedium, and EAHigh, where each group includes 13 LEED projects) to minimize the influence of uncontrolled factors on the LEED project strategy. The author focused on two extreme groups with very different EAc6 credit scores: EALow (13 projects) and EAHigh (13 projects). The groups were compared across LEED categories and credits. Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney and Cliff’s δ test results showed that the EALow and EAHigh groups are associated with high/low achievements in materials-related credits such as “interiors life cycle impact reduction”, “building product disclosure and optimization—material ingredients”, and “low-emitting materials”. As a result, the EALow and EAHigh groups were reclassified into EnergyLow–MaterialsHigh and Energyhigh–MaterialsLow certification strategy groups. In this context, LCAs were used to assess the differences between the two strategies. The results showed that if natural gas was used for operational energy (OE), the EnergyHigh–MaterialsLow strategy showed lower environmental damage compared to the EnergyLow–MaterialsHigh strategy (p = 0.0635); meanwhile, if photovoltaic energy was used for OE, the EnergyLow–MaterialsHigh strategy showed lower environmental damage compared to the EnergyHigh–MaterialsLow strategy (p = 0.0036). The author recommends using the LEED protocol and the LCA method in parallel to better reflect the environmental impact of different certification strategies.

Résumé :
AbstractObjectives: Subjective memory complaints (SMC) in older adults are associated with a decline in everyday functioning and an increased risk for future cognitive decline. This study examines the effect of a memory strategy training compared to a control memory training on memory functioning in daily life. Methods: This was a randomized controlled trial with baseline, post-treatment, and 6-month follow-up assessments conducted in 60 older adults (50–87 years) with SMC. Participants were randomly assigned to either seven sessions of memory strategy training or seven sessions of control memory training. Both interventions were given in small groups and included psycho-education. Primary outcome measure was memory functioning in daily life. Objective measures of memory performance and self-reported measures of strategy use were included as secondary outcome measures. Results: Participants in each intervention group reported an improvement in personal memory goals (p<.0005), up to 6 months after training. An interaction effect showed that participants following memory strategy training reported a larger improvement in personal memory goals (p=.002). Both intervention groups improved on two memory tests (p<.001 and p<.01). In the memory strategy training group, an increase in strategy use in daily life was the strongest predictor (p<.05) of improvement in subjective memory functioning. Conclusions: Older adults with subjective memory complaints benefit from memory strategy training, especially in their memory functioning in daily life. (JINS, 2018, 24, 1110–1120)

Résumé :
Dagestan is the most multiethnic and multilingual republic within the Russian Federation. From the viewpoint of interethnic relations, Dagestan is a unique research platform: the model of ethnopsychological compatibility of numerous peoples has been implemented here for centuries. It is essential for researchers to understand which factors contribute to and which hinder the establishment of effective interethnic communication in modern Dagestan. This empirical study was conducted in the context of the acculturation theory introduced by the Canadian cross-cultural psychologist John Berry. This article presents the results of researching the impact of perceived security, friendly intercultural contacts, preference for supporting a multicultural ideology, ethnic tolerance, and mutual integration attitude on the psychological well-being of both individual ethnic groups and Dagestani population as a whole. In the course of the study, the authors suggested that the higher the perceived security among ethnic groups in Dagestan, the greater the tendency towards maintaining a multicultural ideology, tolerance, and the preference for an integration strategy, and the lower the preference for a separation strategy (multiculturalism hypothesis). In addition, the authors hypothesized that the higher the intensity of friendly intercultural contacts between representatives of various ethnic groups in Dagestan, the higher their level of tolerance, preference for an integration strategy and the lower their preference for a separation strategy (contact hypothesis). The authors also suggested that the higher the preference for the integration strategy by representatives of various Dagestani ethnic groups, the higher their self-esteem and life satisfaction (integration hypothesis). The sample included Avars, Dargins, Russians and representatives of other ethnic groups: Kumyks, Lezgins, Laks, Tabasarans, Nogais, etc. (total number of respondents N = 438). The data were analyzed both for the total sample and for a sample of specific ethnic groups using a Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) approach. MIRIPS questionnaire scales were used. The results demonstrated the contribution of perceived security to a preference for a multicultural ideology, tolerance, and mutual integration in the total sample. The results also demonstrated that the intensity of friendly intercultural contacts has no significant effect on tolerance or mutual integration in Dagestan. However, the preference for mutual integration contributes to life satisfaction and self-esteem among the inhabitants of Dagestan, which confirms the integration hypothesis. A separation preference was positively associated with perceived security, life satisfaction and negatively with friendly intercultural contacts among representatives of certain ethnic groups of Dagestan. The results obtained demonstrate the importance of solving the problem of perceived security for building effective intercultural relations in Dagestan. The formation of a national policy in matters of preserving the cultural identity of various ethnic groups must be adequate, since, as the study has shown, separation strategy only leads to life satisfaction, and integration strategy is associated with both life satisfaction and self-esteem of the inhabitants of Dagestan.

Résumé :
Although the term “life strategy” was introduced into the scientific circulation relatively recently, it immediately caught attention of psychologists and sociologists. “Life strategy” is also relevant to culturologists, as it touches upon the historical and social experience of the people, norms, values and ideals, driving motives in people's behavior with consideration of regional specificity. However, there is yet no comprehensive culturological research on the topic. The goal of this article the author’s attempt to summarize the existing dedicated to “life strategy” within the Russian and foreign humanities, as well as draw attention to this problematic. The research leans on the works of thinkers and philosophers of the past, as well as on the materials obtained by modern researchers. The selected chronological framework allows structuring the history of studying this topic, tracing the change of outlook upon it over time, as well as demonstrating the importance of studying the topic of “life strategy”. The conducted research indicates that initially the study of the concept of “life strategy” pertained to determination of the meaning of life of the entire civilizations, and only with the course of time, separate individuals became the objects of research. In examination of the topic in question, the researchers dealing with the problems of culturology, first and foremost focus on the historical, ethnic, topographical and time aspects, evolution of life strategy among different ethnic groups, as well as gender component, gradually shifting away from the abstract and generalized analysis.

Résumé :
This paper reports a study of the influence of healthy older people's type of residence and social comparison strategies on their quality of life perceptions. Data were collected from 190 participants aged 65 or more years resident in one London Borough. Participants were classified by their type of residence, and their quality of life was assessed by the Schedule for Evaluation of Individual Quality of Life: Direct Weighting (SEIQoL-DW). Among the reported social comparison judgements, the dominant strategy was ‘Downward Contrast’. It was the sole strategy for 78 per cent of those studied, and was significantly associated with a higher perceived quality of life. Among other statistically significant findings, it was found that positive orientation, optimistic orientation, and the use of Contrast rather than Identification comparisons associated with a better reported quality of life. The over-riding influence of Downward Contrast comparisons was also confirmed: this strategy appears to be adaptive and functional in enhancing perceived quality of life. The effect is not mediated by depression, although differences in comparison strategy were observed among groups with different residential status. The possibility of an intervention to enhance the perceived quality of life is discussed.

This study aims to describe how farmers carry out a strategy of life on three groups of farmer: upper layer, middle layer and peasant farmers to finance their family daily life. This research was conducted in the urban village of Pandu, Sub-District Bunaken, Manado City. Most of them live from farming activities. The research was conducted in November 2015 through to March 2016. The primary data obtained from interviews to three (3) groups. Selection of the sample is purposive stratified sampling. Each group selected five respondents, so a total of 15 respondents. Collection of secondary data derived from the Urban Village Office of Pandu, Manado City. The results showed that the upper and middle groups of farmers tend to apply the accumulation strategy while consolidation strategy was not found. The two groups have incomes that exceed the needs of farming and of the results they could buy a cow, land or other assets. While farmers lower group implement survival strategies. This farmersgroup use their earnings for the daily needs of the family and the other half to farm. Limited income makes farmers can not save even they have to borrow money to supplement the family income either eat or buy school supplies for children.

Résumé :
In the article are represented results of empirical research of anxiety features and life goals of personality in professional development crisis. Our sample included 80 persons in the age 17-35 years. It was divided on two groups: first group consisted of 34 people, students of 1-3 courses, the second group consisted of 46 people that were changing their profession and are actually practicing new trade. We used anxiety test of Spilberger-Hanin to explore level of individual and situational anxiety. In addition, we used "Life goals of personality" method that was developed by laboratory of social psychology ISPP NASU led by T. M. Tytarenko. With the help of this method, we explored characteristics of life goals of our sample. It was found that there is a significant difference by Rs criterion on the level p ≤ 0,05 between two groups on a scale "Operational characteristics of life goals". Among working people prevail doubts that they can cope with difficulties, thoughts that success is just an accident, orientation on "need", but not "want". In students group we can see lack of stability and flexibility in solving life tasks. There is straight correlation between motivational directions level and individual anxiety level on the group of working people (p < 0,01). It means growing of inside tension in the presence of motivational directions number increasing. We can assume that motivational direction is some sort of coping-strategy that is using by anxious individuals to put their lives in order. In that way they try to create "image of desired life", that combines expectations, demands and intentions, determining choice of life-realization strategy. In both groups was identified inverse correlation between attitude to the future and individual anxiety (P < 0,01). Operational characteristics of life goals inversely proportional to anxiety level in both groups. That means, that recognition of self-meaning in life-realization, orientation on own plans and needs and ability to take responsibility are low anxiety level related factors. This results gives us an opportunity to say that higher identity, own life goals realization, sense of resilience, life integrity, using of flexibility and activity strategies helps to cope with anxiety during professional crisis.

Résumé :
Abstract Access to reproduction is determined by an individual’s dominance rank in many species and is achieved through aggression and/or dominance signaling. In eusocial insects, one or several dominant females (queens) monopolize reproduction but to what extent queens rely on aggression and signaling remains obscure. Aggression is costly and its efficiency depends on the group size, whereas signaling may reduce the risks and costs of aggression. Both strategies are used to regulate reproduction in social taxa, with aggression being more common in small social groups, compared to signaling in larger societies. Here, we examine the use of aggression and chemical signaling in a social species (Bombus impatiens) where the dominant queen interacts with increasing numbers of workers as she ages. We found that the queen’s strategy to monopolize reproduction changes with life stage, shifting from overt aggression to chemical signaling as the queen gets older. Particularly, old queens exhibited a higher ratio of short to long cuticular hydrocarbons compared to young queens, an endogenous shift that was attributed to age, as all egg-laying queens were fecund and kept with the same number of workers. Our findings contribute to the understanding of reproductive dominance in the context of an individual’s life history.

Résumé :
Studies on the biology of Latrodectus geometricus are scarce, especially on the behavior and life expectancy of the species. In this study we investigated the importance of the aggregation behavior of juveniles on life expectancy and longevity of the species. Egg sacs were collected in the urban area of Dourados- MS and transferred to the laboratory. The spiderlings hatched were separated into two groups: spiderlings aggregated and isolated, kept in the presence of luminosity. The same tests were run with egg sacs deprived of luminosity. A calculation of entropy was performed for all cases. Individuals grouped held under light exposure showed 14.3 days of life expectancy and 46 maximum longevity and 14.8 days of life expectancy and 32 days of longevity when isolated. For individuals grouped and deprived of light life expectancy was 29.8 days and maximum longevity 85 days and 19.3 days of life expectancy and 26 days of maximum longevity when isolated. The entropy of individuals kept in the presence of light, when grouped was H=0.692 and when isolated H=0.377. For individuals deprived of light, the entropy was H = 0.628 when kept grouped and H = 0.143 when isolated. Therefore it is concluded that the aggregation behavior and luminosity influence the longevity and life expectancy of spiderlings. Cannibalism must be a strategy to acquire food reserves contributing to the survival of a small number of individuals.

More than one operative strategy is available but little is known regarding their influence on quality of life. This study analyzes the influence of defensive and aggressive operative strategies on the patients’ midterm quality of life (QoL).Methods: From July 2007 to July 2010, 95 patients underwent surgery for acute Stanford type A aortic dissection in our institution. Patients who survived the procedure, gave consent to inclusion in the institution prospective registry, completed at least 2-years of follow-up protocol, and answered two quality of life questionnaires (SF-36 and WHO-QOL-BREF) were included in the study. Patients were divided into two groups according to operative strategy: defensive (DS) with replacement of the ascending aorta only, and aggressive (AS) with replacement of the ascending aorta, aortic arch with/out a frozen elephant trunk procedure. The preoperative, operative, postoperative and the midterm QoL were analyzed and compared. Results: 39 patients were included in the study. The DS group had a shorter operative time (184 ± 54 versus 276 ± 110 minutes respectively, P = .001). The AS group had higher incidence of dialysis (31% versus 4% respectively, P = .038). The midterm QoL analysis showed a collective lower value than the normal population. In the SF-36, DS performed better in all categories but with no statistical significance. In the WHO-QOL-BREF, DS performed significantly better in the global life quality and psychological health categories (P = .038 and .049 respectively). Conclusion: In Stanford type A aortic dissection, adopting an aggressive surgical strategy does not improve the quality of life in midterm follow-up compared to a defensive strategy. Unless the clinical setting dictates an aggressive management strategy, a defensive strategy can be safely adopted.

Résumé :
Currently, there is limited knowledge on how the Swedish strategy with more lenient public health restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced people’s life satisfaction. Here, we investigated self-reported life satisfaction during the first wave of the pandemic in Sweden, and perceived changes in life satisfaction in relation to various sociodemographic factors. A total of 1082 people (mean age 48 (SD 12.2); 82% women) responded to an online survey during autumn 2020 including the “Life Satisfaction Questionnaire-11”. A majority (69%) were satisfied with life as a whole, and with other important life domains, with the exception of contact with friends and sexual life. An equal share reported that life as a whole had either deteriorated (28%) or improved (29%). Of those that perceived a deterioration, 95% considered it to be due to the pandemic. Regarding deteriorated satisfaction with life as a whole, higher odds were found in the following groups: having no children living at home; being middle aged; having other sources of income than being employed; and having a chronic disease. The Swedish strategy might have contributed to the high proportion of satisfied people. Those who perceived a deterioration in life satisfaction may, however, need attention from Swedish Welfare Authorities.

Résumé :
We report successful diachronic replication of two major sets of prior findings in the social biogeography of human life history (LH) strategy: (1) the constructive replication of the diachronic changes in the latent hierarchical structure of intelligence in Britannic populations, but as presently applied to the latent hierarchical structure of human LH strategy, now cross-validated in both Britannic and Gallic populations; and (2) the diachronic replication in both Britannic and Gallic populations of the structural relations found synchronically among human LH strategy, between-group competition, and economic productivity in cross-sectional data on contemporary samples of both national and subnational polities. In addition, a supplementary methodological objective was: (3) the convergent validation of diachronic lexicographic measures of LH strategy with respect to more traditional non-lexicographic indicators of LH strategy, such as infant mortality rates, total fertility rates, and life expectancies. We obtained complete configural invariance across Britannic and Gallic biocultural groups, meaning that the same model predictors were statistically significant, but incomplete metric invariance, meaning that most but not all model parameter estimates were statistically equivalent in magnitude and direction. All new results obtained from diachronic data in Britannic populations were replicated almost perfectly in Gallic populations.

Résumé :
The purpose of this article is a theoretical and methodological analysis of strategic planning of the united territorial community in conditions of decentralization of power and local self-government reform. The methodological basis is the general aspects of the economic theory and theory of public administration. Methods of research are based on general scientific and special methods of cognition. System, structural and evolutionary approaches are used to identify the essence of the categories "territorial community", "the capacity of the territorial community" and "strategy of development of the territorial community"; the methods of analysis and synthesis allowed to reveal the peculiarities of strategic planning of the development of the united territorial communities, the abstract-logical method was used for theoretical generalization and formation of conclusions. The main aspects and results of the research are applied in the educational process in the development and teaching of normative and special courses "Economics and Governance", "Decentralization and development of territorial communities", "Public-private partnership" at the V.I. Vernadsky Taurida National University for the master's students Public Administration program. The scientific novelty is as follows: 1. With the addition of systemic, structural and evolutionary approaches, it is found that the definition of the term "territorial community" should take into account historical, territorial, ecological, sociological, selfgoverning, economic and political aspects. The concept of "capacity of a territorial community" is defined as the ability to perform the functions entrusted by the legislation directly to the community and local self-government authorities to ensure its life and development. The configuration of the capacity of the territorial community was substantiated, its components (internal and external capacity) were clarified. 2. The principles and stages of strategic planning of the development of a united territorial community under conditions of decentralization of power and local self-government reform, which are important for the success of the strategic planning of territorial development are considered. It is proved that the principles should be considered in close connection with a certain stage of the strategy of the development of the united territorial communities. The algorithm of strategic planning of the development of a united territorial community based on the principles of strategic planning of sustainable development of territories is proposed. 3. It is grounded that the effectiveness of the strategy of the development of united territorial communities depends to a large extent on the way of its development. Practical experience in creating strategies in Ukraine has identified five methods for developing strategic plans for the development of territories, of which the long-term partnership method (three partnerships between government, community and business) with the participation of experts is most effective. This description of each method is given, their strengths and weaknesses are determined. 4. It is grounded that in the conditions of the reform of local self-government the issue of formation of updated (project) competencies of local self-government employees becomes relevant. At the present stage, the demand for a new style of thinking of managers is being formed, the continuation of which is an updated organizational culture of management, the traditional qualifications of today's local government officials are not enough to work in new environments where the project becomes a leading tool for change, achievement of goals, funding unit and one the main means of attracting additional resources to the united territorial communities. The main results can be used by public authorities and authorities, local government authorities, research centres and institutes, and higher educational institutions (proposals for the organization of strategic planning of the development of united territorial communities through institutions of mediation of power, business and community).

Résumé :
Objective Health-related quality of life is impaired in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. This study aimed to identify the main areas of the health-related quality of life environment domain that are affected in patients with myositis. Methods A qualitative study was performed using focus groups and applying the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health. Participants were recruited from a cohort of 323 adult inflammatory myopathy patients consulting at a reference center for idiopathic inflammatory myopathy in Spain, selected by the maximum variation strategy, and placed in focus groups with 5 to 7 patients per group. The number of focus groups required was determined by data saturation. Results Twenty-five patients distributed in 4 focus groups were interviewed. The verbatim provided 54 categories directly related with environmental factors. Those associated with products or substances for personal consumption (e110), health professionals (e355), health services, systems and policies (e580), products and technology for personal use in daily living (e115), and immediate family (e310) were the ones most frequently reported. Conclusion The results of this study led to identification of several environmental factors that affect the health-related quality of life of patients with myositis. Remedial interventions should be designed to address some of these factors.

In recent years, Vietnam has actively and vigorously developed and strengthened law enforcement and facilitated access to the law to protect human rights and legitimate interests. After formulating the Judicial Reform Strategy and implementing the law, the State has created favourable conditions for vulnerable groups to participate in Vietnam's political, social, economic, and cultural life. However, it still faces challenges in ensuring and facilitating access to the law and raising legal awareness. In particular, women, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, and children are the most vulnerable groups. Therefore, this article focuses on the guarantee of the rights of vulnerable groups in the process of law-making in Vietnam today to unveil difficulties and limitations; on that basis, it makes proposals for ensuring the rights of vulnerable groups in the legislative process in the coming time. Résumé :
The article considers the problem of the quality of life of the elderly in the city. A high-quality innovative urban environment is understood as a safe, comfortable space for living and recreation using smart city (home) technologies, adapted for all social groups of the population, including age groups. In modern Russia, the demographic situation requires paying attention to the compliance with city standards and criteria for the quality of life of seniors in a digital economy. This work is relevant today due to the increase in the retirement age. Principles of the active ageing effective strategy shall be based on the social partnership of state and elderly people. In the context of the foregoing, the quality of life of an elderly person is becoming increasingly important for the formation of a humanistic social urban environment in connection with the need to adapt a person to living conditions that change late in life.

Résumé :
The current research aims to know the impact of the strategy of thinking power in achievement and development of life skills for fifth-grade literary students in history, by verifying the validity of the following null hypotheses. First, there is no statistically significant difference at the level of significance (0.05) between the average grades of the experimental group students who study modern and contemporary European and American history according to the thinking power strategy and the average scores of the control group students who study the same subject in the usual way in the post-achievement test.Furthermore, there is no statistically significant difference at the level of significance (0.05) between the average grades of the experimental group students who study modern and contemporary European and American history according to the strategy of thinking power in the pre- and post-life skills scale. Finally, there is no statistically significant difference at a significance level (0.05) between the average scores of the control group students who study modern and contemporary European and American history according to the usual method in the pre- and post-life skills scale. To achieve the goal of the research, the researcher adopted a partial controlled experimental design for the experimental and control groups, as well as the pre- and post-tests. The researcher applied the research experiment on a sample of fifth grade literary students in (Thuaiba Al-Islamiya Girls High School) affiliated to the General Directorate of Diyala Governorate Education for the academic year (2018/2019), which was randomly selected. The number of female students in the research sample was (66), of which (32) female students were for the experimental group that would be studied according to the strategy of thinking power, and (34) female students for the control group that would be taught according to the regular method. The researcher conducted equivalence between the two research groups with the following variables: (parents' academic achievement, first course scores for the academic year (2018/2019), IQ test scores, and pre-life skills scale scores. After the researcher determined the scientific subject that she will study for the students of the experimental and control groups in the experiment, namely the chapters (the fifth, sixth and seventh) of the modern and contemporary European and American history curriculum to be taught to the fifth grade literary students for the study year 2018/2019, the researcher formulated (131) behavioural goals according to the six levels for BLOOM classification of the cognitive domain (knowledge, understanding, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation), daily instructional plans were prepared for the experimental and control groups.

The effects of various encoding tasks on long-term recognition of odours were examined. Different groups of subjects were instructed (a) to form visual images of the source of the odour, (b) to generate the name of the odour and provide a dictionary-like definition, or (c) to describe a life episode of which the odour reminded them. A no-strategy control was simply told to try to remember the odours for a subsequent recognition test. One week later, subjects performed a yes–no recognition test for the odours. The second and third groups displayed significantly higher recognition than the controls. The visual imagery group did not differ significantly from the control group. The results seem to be accounted for best by dual coding theory.

Résumé :
Changing worn tools is a major concern in planning operations on machining systems. Strategies for replacing tools range from changing each tool as it reaches its projected tool life, to changing all tools when the tool with the shortest life on the machining system is expended. Intermediate strategies involve changing tools in groups. Each of these strategies has two cost components associated with it: (1) the cost of lost production due to machine tool stoppage, and (2) the cost of unused tool life. The best tool grouping strategy minimizes the combined cost of lost production. In this paper we present an approach for finding good tool grouping strategies from inputs that include the tool utilization for a given machining application, and the tooling and machining system costs. A genetic algorithm is used as the underlying optimization paradigm for finding the minimum cost strategy. An example is presented for a part produced on a machining center. [S1087-1357(00)00303-8]

Résumé :
BackgroundThe aim of this study was to identify patients who benefit most from exhaled nitric oxide fraction (FENO)-driven asthma management in primary care, based on prespecified subgroups with different levels of FENO.MethodsWe used data from 179 adults with asthma from a 12-month primary care randomised controlled trial with 3-monthly assessments of FENO, asthma control, medication usage, costs of medication, severe asthma exacerbations and quality of life. In the original study, patients were randomised to either a symptom-driven treatment strategy (controlled asthma (Ca) strategy) or a FENO+symptom-driven strategy (FCa). In both groups, patients were categorised by their baseline level of FENO as low (<25 ppb), intermediate (25–50 ppb) and high (>50 ppb). At 12 months, we compared, for each prespecified FENO subgroup, asthma control, asthma-related quality of life, medication usage, and costs of medication between the Ca and FCa strategy.ResultsWe found a difference between the Ca and FCa strategy for the mean dosage of beclomethasone strategy of 223 µg (95% CI 6–439), p=0.04) and for the total costs of asthma medication a mean reduction of US$159 (95% CI US$33–285), p=0.03) in patients with a low baseline FENO level. No differences were found for asthma control, severe asthma exacerbations and asthma-related quality of life in patients with a low baseline FENO level. Furthermore, in patients with intermediate or high level of FENO, no differences were found.ConclusionsIn primary care, FENO-driven asthma management is effective in patients with a low FENO level, for whom it is possible to down-titrate medication, while preserving asthma control and quality of life.

Résumé :
Purpose – Carers play a vital role in looking after people with intellectual disabilities (ID). Caring role can be stressful and challenging in nature. Carers use various coping strategies to deal with stressors. The purpose of this paper is to explore coping strategies of carers looking after people with ID and dementia. Design/methodology/approach – Qualitative methodology was used to explore coping strategies. Focus groups and face-to-face interviews were carried out. These interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. Findings – Nine interviews with carers (six paid carers and three family carers) and two focus groups with nursing staff looking after people with ID were carried out. Three key themes of “Narrative”, “Strategy toolbox” and “Compartmentalisation” emerged from analysis. Narrative and strategy took box were further subthemed. Carers had narratives about them and the person they look after. These “narratives” helped them to deal with day to day stressors. They also carried a “strategy toolbox”, which they used when they were in stressful situations. Compartmentalisation helped them to separate their personal life from work life as a carer. Originality/value – Understanding carers’ coping strategies is important when planning services to help carers who play an important role in our society. Professionals can support carers to understand and improve their existing coping skills and help them to thrive in their role as carers.

Résumé :
This study sought to investigate the differences between the request strategies used by Jordanian and American speakers. Data for this study were collected via a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) questionnaire, incorporating 16 real-life scenarios in the form of short descriptive statements. In accordance with the Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realization Patterns, participants' responses (n= 30) divided into three groups (Jordanian Non-English Majors, Jordanian English Majors and American participants). The data were analyzed and further classified into three types based on their level of directness: (i) direct (D), (ii) conventional indirect (ID), and (iii) non-conventional indirect requests (NID).The results of this study indicate that the act of requesting is performed differently by the three groups of participants. The results also showed that strategy (Reference to Preparatory Cond.) was ranked the highest in percent (87.5%, 67.5%) for the two groups American and Jordanian “Male”) respectively, and (86.3%, 76.3%) %) for the two groups American and Jordanian “Female”) respectively. Also, results showed that the strategy (Locution Deliverable) was ranked the lowest by the Jordanian females sample, just (1.9%).

Résumé :
Domination is the preferred and pathological model of assimilation into Western culture. For lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queers (LGBTQs) in America, the resulting stress can reach devastating levels. In response to such circumstances, the assimilation experience of LGBTQ Americans facilitates their manifestation of the Bleaching Syndrome. As a LGBTQ strategy, the Bleaching Syndrome is characterized by the efforts of a stigmatized out-group to assume the identity of a dominant in-group via anatomical paradigm. In this way, assimilation and a better quality of life is presumed assured. Such a strategy, however, in extreme cases may be fatal. For members of LGBTQ out-groups, identity across the life span is alternative to the pathological anatomical paradigm. In this way, LGBTQ Americans may be identified more by gender as who they are and less by genitalia.

Résumé :
Frequently placed on the edges of scientific debate and analyzed in relation to problems or theoretical constructs specific to other social groups, the portrait of the “working-class family” is too often the product of logical deductions and a sort of no-man's land. The research project described by the present article concerns factories, working-class groups, and family strategies in Barreiro, a Portuguese industrial town near Lisbon, the Portuguese capital. Special attention is given to reconstructing the industrial experience at a regional level and to the study of workers in the cork and heavy metallurgical industries of Barreiro. The results suggest the internal diversity of the working-class world and two different kinds of linkeage between family and workplace life—the survival strategy of cork workers in the 1920s, and the promotion strategy of the metal workers in the 1950s.

Résumé :
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of transglobal leadership on quality of work-life, job involvement and its impact on the performance of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) employees throughout Malang Raya. Design/methodology/approach The population of the paper was all of MSME employees in Malang Raya and MSME developing in East Java regions, namely Sidoarjo, Pasuruan District, Pasuruan City, Kediri District, Jombang, Surabaya City, Blitar City and Blitar District. This paper uses GSCA for several reasons. First, it uses a structural model (involving several endogenous variables). Second, it involves unobservable variables that require a measurement model (variable measurement of the indicators). Third, it needs a comparative model testing that compares several groups of objects using the multigroup GSCA. Findings Transglobal leadership has a significant effect on quality of work life and job involvement in the five regions. It also has a significant effect on employee performance in the four regions, except Malang Regency. Quality of work life has a significant effect on job involvement in two regions, namely Malang City and Malang Regency, but not in the other three regions. Quality of work life and job involvement together has a significant effect on employee performance in all study sites. Originality/value These gaps motivate the researchers to comprehensively examine the relationship between QWL and employee performance, QWL and job involvement and job involvement and employee performance – these are the originality of the present study, in addition to different research locations. Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Malang are divided into three main groups, namely manufacturing business, merchandising business and service business.

Résumé :
Why do race stereotypes take the forms they do? Life history theory posits that features of the ecology shape individuals’ behavior. Harsh and unpredictable (“desperate”) ecologies induce fast strategy behaviors such as impulsivity, whereas resource-sufficient and predictable (“hopeful”) ecologies induce slow strategy behaviors such as future focus. We suggest that individuals possess a lay understanding of ecology’s influence on behavior, resulting in ecology-driven stereotypes. Importantly, because race is confounded with ecology in the United States, we propose that Americans’ stereotypes about racial groups actually reflect stereotypes about these groups’ presumed home ecologies. Study 1 demonstrates that individuals hold ecology stereotypes, stereotyping people from desperate ecologies as possessing faster life history strategies than people from hopeful ecologies. Studies 2–4 rule out alternative explanations for those findings. Study 5, which independently manipulates race and ecology information, demonstrates that when provided with information about a person’s race (but not ecology), individuals’ inferences about blacks track stereotypes of people from desperate ecologies, and individuals’ inferences about whites track stereotypes of people from hopeful ecologies. However, when provided with information about both the race and ecology of others, individuals’ inferences reflect the targets’ ecology rather than their race: black and white targets from desperate ecologies are stereotyped as equally fast life history strategists, whereas black and white targets from hopeful ecologies are stereotyped as equally slow life history strategists. These findings suggest that the content of several predominant race stereotypes may not reflect race, per se, but rather inferences about how one’s ecology influences behavior.

Résumé :
In this study, we conducted the translation and validation of the K-SF-42 in Japan (Figueredo, 2017). The K-SF-42 is a new short form of the Arizona Life History Battery. We obtained empirical evidence that the original seven-factor structure could be applied to the Japanese translated version of K-SF-42 (K-SF-42-J). We also observed good internal consistency of the seven scales of K-SF-42-J. The multi-group confirmatory factor analysis findings suggest that the K-SF-42-J can be used in both sexes and diverse age groups. The K-SF-42-J scales showed similar correlates as the English original, with higher scores of other life history strategy measurement, trait emotional intelligence, well-being, and cultural and social resources in childhood. Use of the K-SF-42-J will allow researchers with Japanese speaking samples to integrate their findings with the existing life history strategy research literature. The brevity of the K-SF-42-J will be appealing to researchers who are concerned about taxing the time and motivation of their participants.

Résumé :
Abstract The variety of types of life strategy and the structure of the populations of whitespotted char Salvelinus leucomaenis (Pallas, 1814) are considered at Kamchatka. At the north of the species range, the populations of whitespotted char are heterogeneous. The main role in reproduction belongs to anadromous whitespotted char, but there are also the groups in the populations that realize their life cycle exclusively in fresh waters. Dwarf males are common in the rivers of different types. In the geomorphologically complex river (Kol), there is also the river populations of rheodromous whitespotted char, represented by males and females. Favorite biotopes (blockages and creases of woody material on deep reaches, found only in foothill rivers) are key parameters predetermining the presence of a river population of rheodromous whitespotted char. At the north of the species range, the variety of individuals with different types of life strategy in whitespotted char is comparable to that observed in the southern parts, in particular, in the basin of the Sea of Japan, which is considered the zone of the ecological optimum of the species.

Résumé :
The rapid economic growth of Korea was accompanied by the side effect of disproportionate growth between regions. The central government has implemented balanced development strategies by enacting the Special Act on Balanced National Development. For example, central administrative institutions were relocated to Sejong-si, which was built as the administrative capital. This study examines whether the top-down strategy promoted balanced growth between regions using public big data. We use various indicators to pay attention to not only quantitative growth, such as population size and economic growth, but also qualitative growth, such as life satisfaction. The results show that, despite the government’s efforts, the population was concentrated in the major metropolitan areas and the economic gap between regions did not narrow. While metropolitan areas achieved steady growth based on the preemption of spatial competitiveness, non-metropolitan areas did not take advantage of more investment from government. However, it shows a significant increase in job creation in Sejong-si, suggesting it is more efficient to move institutions in groups than to completely disperse public institutions in the balanced development strategy. In terms of the quality of life, Sejong-si had the lowest personal life satisfaction and local life satisfaction, indicating that the top-down strategy has failed to manage the quality of life. We propose that promoting a compact city with multiple functions in the non-metropolitan areas will help balance development. To achieve a better quality of life, centralized power should be transferred to local governments, and policies should be built based on communication with local residents. Innovative and sustainable policies that efficiently utilize the uniqueness and potential of the region are needed for balanced growth.

Résumé :
1525 Background: The objective of this study was to incorporate evidence from two recently-published studies to reevaluate the cost-effectiveness of the 21-gene Recurrence Score (RS) assay (Oncotype DX) in the context of multifactorial decision making to guide the use of chemotherapy for node-negative, estrogen receptor–positive breast cancer in the United States from the societal and healthcare system perspectives. Methods: We developed a decision-analytic model to first cross-classify hypothetical patients by clinicopathologic characteristics according to the Adjuvant! using risk groups and RS risk groups. We generated estimates of long-term costs, survival, and quality-adjusted survival for the RS-guided and non–RS-guided strategies using a probabilistic state transition model. In addition to costs for the 21-gene assay, we assigned attributable costs for chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, monitoring for disease recurrence, and distant recurrence. For the societal perspective, we also considered incremental patient time costs. Costs and survival were discounted at 3% annually. Results: With the RS-guided strategy, 40.4% of patients were expected to receive chemotherapy relative to 47.3% in the non–RS-guided strategy. Targeted use of chemotherapy in the RS-guided strategy was expected to increase survival by 0.19 years (95% CI, 0.09 to 0.32) and 0.16 QALYs (95% CI, 0.08 to 0.28). Lifetime direct medical costs were expected to be $2692 (95% CI, 1546 to 3821) higher with the RS-guided strategy. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) were $14,059 per life-year saved (95% CI, $6840-$28,912) and $16,677 per QALY (95% CI, $7613-$37,219). When incorporating lower indirect costs of $950 per patient, the ICERs were $9095 per life-year saved (95% CI, dominant-$23,397) and $10,788 per QALY (95% CI, $6840-$30,265). In probabilistic sensitivity analysis, more than 99% of the ICERs were less than $50,000 per life-year saved and per QALY. Conclusions: Our updated cost-effectiveness estimates are supportive of the economic value of the 21-gene RS assay in the setting of node-negative, estrogen receptor–positive breast cancer.

Résumé :
The present study attempts to identify the biological characteristics of invasive (high-impact in the secondary area) bark beetles and borers species, contributing to their success in an invaded area. We selected 42 species based on the CABI website data on invasive species and information on the most studied regional faunas. Four groups of species with different invasion strategies were identified based on the cluster and factor analysis. The first one (inbred strategy) is characterized by flightless males, xylomycetophagy, low fecundity (~50 eggs), inbreeding, polyvoltinism, and polyphagy. Species with an aggressive strategy are poly- or monovoltine, feeds on a limited number of hosts, larval feeding on the inner bark, are often associated with phytopathogens, and produce aggregation pheromones. Representatives of the polyphagous strategy have a wide range of hosts, high fecundity (~150 eggs), larval feeding on wood, and their life cycle is at least a year long. For the intermediate strategy, the typical life cycle is from a year or less, medium fecundity, feed on inner bark tissues, mono- or oligophagy. Comparison with low-impact alien species showed that the most significant traits from the viewpoint of the potential danger of native plant species are high fecundity, polyvoltinism, presence of symbiotic plant pathogens, long-range or aggregation pheromones.

Highlights. The impact of clinical, angiographic and procedure-related factors on the quality of life of patients with chronic coronary total occlusions has been reported.Background. The impact of patient-related factors including clinical and angiographic data and procedure-related factors on the quality of life remains debating.Aim. To assess the impact of baseline and procedure-related factors on the quality of life in patients with chronic coronary total occlusion.Methods. 140 patients with chronic single-vessel disease randomly assigned either to the invasive-strategy group or the conservative-strategy group. Quality of life was measured in all patients using the Seattle Angina Questionnaire, European Quality of Life Survey, and Rose Dyspnea Scale after 3 and 12 months. To determine the predictors to the quality of life improvements in both groups, simple and multivariate regression analysis were performed. The baseline clinical, angiographic and procedure-related factors were included in the analysis.Results. The technical success of the procedure was the independent predictor to quality of life improvement in the invasive-strategy group (OR: 5.8, 95%, CI: 3,26-9.18, p = 0.001). The absence of diabetes mellitus (OR: 0.19, 95%, CI: 0.09-0.84, p = 0.04), CTO of other than left anterior descending artery (OR: 2.1, 95%, CI: 1.09-4.0, p = 0.03) and higher SAQ - 7 score at baseline (OR: 1.1, 95%, CI: 1.04-1.21, p = 0.02) independently predicted the improvements in the quality of life. The indicators of quality of life between the subgroups of subintimal and intraluminal recanalization did not differ significantly in the long-term period. The total SAQ-7 score in the subintimal recanalization subgroup was 85.5 ± 9.1 versus 89.3 ± 9.6 in the intraluminal recanalization subgroup (p = 0.21).Conclusion. The decision on the management of patients with chronic coronary total occlusions should be made individually, taking into account baseline clinical and instrumental data. The recanalization technique does not affect the quality of life. Its choice should be made individually in order to achieve technical success.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study is to propose a strategic framework using the Unified Life Cycle (ULC)model by combining Product lifecycle (PLC) and Industry life cycle (ILC). Data collection and analysis involves multi-stage qualitative methods. At first stage qualitative data was collected through interviews and focus groups while at a later part of the research qualitative data was again collected from the marketing experts (N = 100). This paper shows originality on many counts. Firstly, both PLC and ILC have shown weaknesses and limitations in earlier researches. This research has unified both PLC and ILC into one ULC combining the strengths and reducing the weakness of both life cycles. Secondly, earlier studies failed to provide any integrated strategic framework of selecting appropriate pricing strategies; using both PLC and ILC in silos. The current research provides an integrated strategic framework for pricing strategy selection using newly proposed strategic framework labelled as ULC.
