Résumé :
In this project, the challenges facing public libraries and the emerging trend of involving users in library development have been combined with inspiration from the field of urban media design. The aim has been to explore what behaviors public media surfaces designed for culture and exchange could possess, and to argue for the benefits of integrating the library in the urban fabric. The result is a proposed set of tactics for how the library can consciously work with allowing patrons to leave and follow traces. It is manifested in a concept that creates a narrative around each library book, print as well as ebook, and makes its journey tangible by visualizing its digital patina. The system also allows patrons to leave ebooks at designated nodes around the city, thus influencing which books are made available where.

Résumé :
In today's highly competitive landscape, new product development strategies are imperatives for companies to create and sustain competitive advantages. The objective of this research is to develop an integrated approach to automate, or aid, the design problem solving process. An Integrated Design System (IDS) is proposed focusing on the parametric and detail design. In this system, generation and evaluation of new design problems occur quickly and easily by changing the inputs for the design model. The IDS provides an integrated platform to incorporate available application programs such as CAD and FEM tools into a single system. Four major frameworks, namely information handling, problem decomposition, design space characterization, and problem solving, are proposed and embedded in it to implement the product development process. The information handling includes five aspects. A naming protocol is devised to organize the historical design cases. A search algorithm is proposed to retrieve a design case. A system-generated report is used to distribute the design information. A constraint definition frame is presented to define the relationships between design parameters. Two schemas, information matrix and constraint tree, are developed to represent information in the IDS. A diagonal-centered decomposition scheme is developed utilizing a Genetic Algorithm to decompose a complex design problem. In addition to the conventional genetic operators, two novel genetic operators, unequal position crossover and insertion mutation, are proposed. To characterize the design space, two methods, Incremental Response Method (IRM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN), are presented. The IRM is derived from response surface method, while the back-propagated ANN is coded to be self-evaluated. The presented problem solving algorithm constitutes the solving mechanism of the IDS. Based on the assessment of the design objectives, all design parameters are given a priority index to facilitate the parameter selection. An independent recursive method is introduced in this algorithm to handle the design constraints. The case studies are performed on two design problems: a hard disk drive actuator arm and a shaft. The results show that the system can automatically align parameter values towards the objective values in a reasonable manner, and thus verify the feasibility of the embedded frameworks.

Résumé :
University libraries struggle to keep up with rapidly changing technology and the associated change in teaching strategy. Most administrators and librarians are often not trained to assess space needs and struggle to reassign library spaces for non-traditional library use. As such, they often embark on expensive and time-consuming feasibility studies, using (typically) hard-earned monies to complete the research or to pilot a new space. What academic research library administrators and staff lack is an analysis tool for discovering and planning needed renovations and improvements in aging library facilities. The purpose of this research project was to determine how students use library spaces for learning in this new high-tech, hands-on education experience (i.e. synthesis of previous research); develop a tool that can be used by library staff to self-analyze existing academic library spaces, identifying areas that could be improved for student benefit (e.g. provide a checklist of potential learning spaces that institutions should carefully consider adding to their facilities); and provide some examples/case studies of potential facility improvements. The end result is a hierarchical self-analysis tool that merges space options, Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and an example of library-user personas. It also provides some general cost guidelines, helpful construction tips, and a synthesis of exploratory questions related to strategy and space. The tool uses evidence-based design to facilitate important conversations, provide an organized checklist of various considerations, and be a quick reference for library administrators and facility managers as they navigate the world of twenty-first century pedagogy and student learning.

Résumé :
Public libraries have changed tremendously. Libraries used to be places with an organized collection of documents that people would visit and read quietly. However, with the development of digital technology, people are now able to conveniently access the same information from home or elsewhere. Instead of a storehouse of knowledge, a library is now a community center. Preschoolers attend story time with their parents and adults come with friends for entertainment and events. Nowadays, libraries have become a gathering place for social, leisure, self-education and learning activities. In this thesis, I am exploring how to design spaces which can encourage communication between people. According to Jan Gehl's book, Cities for People, watching, listening and experiencing others is the beginning of social communication. After studying precedents, I summarized basic space prototypes which promote communication and then applied them to the design of a large urban public library on a site in Arlington, Virginia. By translating the different prototypes into the design, the resulting building provides spaces with different scales, levels of privacy and qualities to fulfill a wide range of individual needs.

The importance of music in the development of the spiritual world of the child's personality, his cognitive and intellectual abilities is difficult to overestimate. The social significance of the project is first of all a problem of any small town, settlement - remoteness from cultural centers. Most often, the music school becomes the main cultural institution of the academic orientation of the settlement, so the creation of optimal conditions for the development of children's creative potential becomes most relevant here. Children's music school aims to educate a harmoniously developed person, the formation of aesthetic tastes on the best examples of classical music, involvement in the art of music. Eco-style is used in the interior design. Eco-style allows you to create a cozy and comfortable space that will serve as a place for rest, recovery and energy. The combination of non-standard forms, natural materials create a unique beauty of the institution.

Résumé :
Magister Bibliothecologiae - MBibl
The use and design of library spaces in higher education is a theme that has come to the forefront of user needs in the past few years. Academic libraries are redesigning their spaces to accommodate the 21st century user. The 21st century user is often labeled as Generation Y and requires a different set of knowledge and skills. In today’s knowledge economy, core skills include creativity, problem solving and collaboration. Libraries are creating space to accommodate the needs of these new users. They are developing group work areas, relaxation or pause areas, technology hubs and discussion rooms. This study has investigated how to redesign academic libraries, using Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) Cape Town branch as a pilot study. The researcher used the concept of library "as place" or "3ʳᵈ place" as a theory. The framework interrogated the ten qualities of a good library space. The researcher used a mixed method research design to conduct this study. A questionnaire of which multiple copies were made, interviews and internal statistics were used to gather data. The results of the study reflected that the library is functional, can be adapted, the space is accessible and varied, it is conducive to motivating and inspiring people, it does promote interactivity between users and library services, and is environmentally suitable, flexible and has a wow factor. All of these characteristics conform to McDonald’s ten qualities of a good library space.

Résumé :
The Swedish national strategy for libraries, published in 2019 by the National Library of Sweden on behalf of the Government, with the utmost goal to strengthen democracy, describes a vision of a library for all in 2030. Historically, the library has been quiet rooms with collections of books. Something that does not support today’s nor future needs of a library according to the national strategy.  Is it possible to combine the vision of an open space with the old-time quiet library? Library of Östersund is a public library that has outgrown its premises from the 1950s, but due to savings, plans for a new library have been put on hold. I have examined how changes to the interior can support the aim to reach the goals of the Swedish national library strategy. Above all, to attract new groups without scaring away the visitors of today, or yesterday. The emphasis lies on how the spatial design can encourage activity versus focus, the importance of forms, flows and meetings of different materials, and how the relationship between architecture and body is formed from a diversity of perspectives.

Résumé :
Where do beginner readers read in the English, mainstream primary school and where could they read? Emma Jane Dyer This thesis explores design for the beginner reader in Year One by evaluating existing spaces in the English primary school and imagining new ones. Three significant gaps identified in the literature of reading, the teaching of reading and school design are addressed: the impact of reading pedagogies, practices and routines on spatial arrangements for beginner readers inside and beyond the classroom; a theoretical understanding of the physical, bodily and sensory experience of the beginner reader; and the design of reading spaces by teaching staff. The study uses a design-oriented research methodology and framework proposed by Fällman. A designed artefact is a required outcome of the research: in this case, a child-sized, semi-enclosed book corner known as a nook. The research was organized in three phases. First, an initial design for the nook was created, based on multi-disciplinary, theoretical research about reading, school design and architecture. Secondly, empirical research using observation, pupil-led tours and interviews was undertaken in seven primary schools to determine the types of spaces where readers read: spaces that were often unsuitable for their needs. Thirdly, as a response to the findings of phases one and two, the nook was reconceived to offer a practical solution to poorly-designed furniture for reading in schools and to provoke further research about the ideal qualities of spaces for the beginner reader. The study demonstrates how the experience of the individual reader is affected by choices made about the national curriculum; by the size of schools and the spaces within them where readers can learn; by the design of classrooms by teachers; and by regulatory standards for teaching and non-teaching spaces. In developing a methodology that can stimulate and facilitate communication between architects, educators, policy-makers and readers, this thesis offers a valuable contribution to the ongoing challenge of improving school design for practitioners and pupils.

Library, not only a paradise of knowledge storage and a core of progress of human being cultures but also a place for storing research information, providing self-reading, self-improvement and learning, is a type of architecture with a special function. Modern libraries must be created as interactive places between human and books, human and knowledge, and also human and media. Therefore, the most important issue of a library is how to create a suitable reading place – both in the maintenance and raise in quality -by design. The purpose of this research is to examine the section of environmental design in people’s reading psychology and the atmosphere of compact shelves and reading room; and further, it will become a reference of library design later. The research range is limited in open stock space and reading space which are often and long-time used. In chapter three and four of the thesis, basic design rules and conditions of Physical Environment of Buildings about these two space were analyzed and generalized. Besides, the interactive relationship of reading behavior and space environment in libraries is analyzed in two parts. One part is open stock space, including compositions of housing planning and the protection of books : the construction of lighting environment and the control of temperature and humidity . The other part is reading room space about the inquiry of home planning、lighting environment、color environment and noise control, in addition to the relative theory of environmental psychology and ergonomics in system furniture planning. There are some cases analyses which are classified by the plain relationship between the reading space and open stock space. One type located the reading space and open stock space on the same floor : Exeter Library of Louis I. Kahn and History Faculty Library of James Stirling, the other is on different floors : National Library of France of Dominque Perrault and Seattle Central Library of OMA&LMN. The impact about reading quality of design and plane are analyzed in these cases. The theory about environmental design can help us realize the interactive relationship between environment and reader behavior in this thesis. By adopting the knowledge about environmental design, designers are able to realize specail requirements of library users and make it as references of design so that it can provide us with another thinking : besides considering economic design, designers can create more efficient libraries.

Despite an interesting number of new public libraries worldwide have been coming out with success recently, including those in Italy, others in the same context and also in the different one are still facing the problem of reducing the number of users. By this the research analyzed relationships between contemporary public library as a physical space and their occupants to acquire a better understanding of these phenomena and to bring significant elements in the future public library design.  Due to aiming to improve the bond between public library and its users, perceived well-being was set as a key factor to extrapolate useful implications. Employing a holistic approach to provide a wide perspective, the study was carried out with the fundamental contribution of Design, Architecture and Environmental psychology. The Multiple Case Study was adopted as a research strategy for the field research which conducted in two correlated stages. In the first one, fifteen public libraries in Italy selected as good practices were explored in their natural setting to identify common and diverse characteristics of their environment. During this stage, a combined technique of gathering data was used: document consultation; conversation with their librarians; taking notes from direct observations; recording some occurring dynamics of space using by taking photos. Then in the second stage, three libraries of them were chosen as the samples for further investigation by in-depth interviewing some of their users. This study confirms that the user's perception of well being is associated with some design features which strongly influence his decision to visit a public library and to occupy its spaces. The most important factors that determine a positive environment are three: large and open space; natural light; internal and external prospect. Most of the users' expectations were found encountered, proving that the space designing was well conceptualized by the contemporary designers. By the way, some critical points were underlined and relative suggestions were given by the interviewees.  All data and results deriving from every phase of the research were compared and integrated to define set of criteria and ideas figured out in the final part with descriptions and pictures which could be served as design indications for a new project that concerns the user's perception of well-being and user's needs to purpose a public library as a functional and comfortable place to be frequented with pleasure.

Public library is the place that children acquire information and knowledge. An Ideal children library can adapt to children’s need, help children exploring the world through reading. The purpose of this study is to investigate the main principles for designing a children space in the public library. This study first analyzes papers to summarize several principles of children space design in public library, and conclude “physical environment checklist” and “funcitional area sheet” as research tools. Observation and semi-structured interview are applied in the study to examine eight awarded public libraries and interview six users. The finding shows that there are three types of children space, including independent floor space, a separate room and an open area. Libraries choose the most suitable type according to their size and number of floors. Twenty-three principles of children space and furniture design are also found out. Overall, these findings can be used in public library for children space design in the future.

The university library relates closely to the quality of higher education. The researches on the qualified role、services and software/hardware equipments of the academic library are focused mainly on the comprehensive universities, rarely on the technological and vocational colleges and universities. According to “2008 Summary of universities, colleges, and junior colleges” of the Department of Statistics of Ministry of Education (http://www.edu.tw/files/site_content/b0013/ul.xls), the total numbers of the technological and vocational colleges and universities are more than the comprehensive universities. Through the investigation, we find that there are no obvious differences on the area of libraries, but evident discrepancies on the collections and librarians between them. That is, the total collections and librarians of the technological and vocational colleges and universities are only half of them of the comprehensive universities. Thus, this research is firstly to discuss the design conceptions and ways of library buildings. Secondly, to survey the similarities and differences between the ideas and suggestions from scholars’ related articles and the actual situations of the libraries. This research is implemented chiefly by half-structure interview and secondarily by observation. The directors or the chiefs of section who had actually participated the library space planning and design when the library is new-borned、renewed or enlarged from 2002 to 2008 are listed as the interviewees. A total of 13 libraries of the technological and vocational institutes are interviewed. The results show that : the library space planning and design conceptions of the technical education institutes are emphasized on three parts -- the completeness of library function、entrance into library of attracting users and pragmatic maintenance of the building. While the elements which affect library space planning and design are administrative decision、expenses limit、environment and artificial reasons. Finally, this research provides 16 proposals for reference and 8 suggestions for further study.

Résumé :
The work began with a theoretical investigation into the relationship between the construction of architecture and the construction of cultural scripts of gender. Gender, as divided into the distinct cultural scripts of masculine and feminine, is based on dichotomous thought which can traced back to Greek philosophy. The mind/body split, originating with Plato, underlies a host of others: reason/intuition, justice/compassion, cognition/sensation, culture/nature, public/private, order/chaos, and ultimately, male/female. These pairs, each a cultural construct in itself, are conceived of as binary opposites, in which the former reigns supreme over the latter, rather than as equally valued ends of a continuum. The problem is, therefore, that the construct of gender, based on Platonic dichotomous thought and as such representative of the exclusionary practices of Western culture, is reinforced by architectural discourse and practice which accepts the basis of the construct as a pre-spatial given. I propose that the beginnings of a solution may lie in the rethinking and reconfiguration of the construct of gender from one based on dichotomous thought to one that allows for the possibility of a continuum amongst difference. The problem then becomes the formulation of an architectural language which indeed does not assume dichotomous thought as its basis, but rather holds dichotomy in balance with multiplicity, opposite with continuum, singularity with plurality. The site I have chosen is the triangle of land bounded by Stanley Park and the Lost Lagoon to the north, Chilco Street and Lagoon Drive to the south, Georgia Street to the east, and Stanley Park to the west. The site currently contains a bus loop, a concession stand, the "Nature House" and a public washroom. It is a hinge caught between the edge of the park, the urban grid of the West End apartment blocks, and the traffic corridor of Georgia Street. It spans the border between the city and the park and as such is conducive to the rethinking of the city/park boundary (or dichotomy). A study of the current use patterns of the multiple public's using the place (cyclists, pedestrians, buses, tourists, locals, young, old, male, female etc) revealed the site as a series of striations and boundaries in terms of their physical formal placement in the site and spatial relationships to each other.;A formal investigation resulted in an understanding of the site in terms of a series of platforms and retaining walls -- allowing possibilities for the beginnings of transformations of how boundaries/thresholds establish relationships between things. The program, or the series of overlaid programs, involves the integration of a civic program (a public library) into park program (sea wall and Stanley Park circulation routes, concession stand, the Nature House, public washrooms) as well as city infrastructure (bus loop: road ways, lamp posts, bus wires), again acting as a tool by which boundaries can be rethought. In an overall sense, working with this site and these programs also has led to an attempt to understand the construction of the site/building not only as a mediation between the city and the park, but also as a way to re-imagine the thresholds between architecture, landscape architecture and infrastructure.

In this thesis, the partial differential equations for computing heat transferin PCB's and IC packages are approximated by using the finite difference method. We have proposed efficient equivalent circuit models to simulate the heat transfer mechanism of PCB's and IC's. We have also considered the complicate wiring models of PCB's in our simulation. In the modeling of IC's, we also pro-posed the asymptotic equivalent method to transfer the traditional three dimen-sion equivalent circuits of IC's into two dimension asymptotic equivalent cir- cuits. With the usage of this method, the simulation computation time and com-puter memory size can be reduced greatly. The asymptotic equivalent network ofIC's are used to build the library models designed in SPICE. According to ourconsideration of the accuracy, we can determine the order of simplified modelsi.e. different asymptotic equivalent models.

Conducted in a period of transition in the representation and communication strategies in architecture, the present research focuses on architectural design teaching and especially on the contributions of digital means to this process. Based on a qualitative methodology, including participative and exploratory approaches, this research evolved around a progression of questions, the first one being “How could architectural design teaching take advantage of digital technologies?” Our objective was to define computer-assisted teaching methods and digital devices that could enrich the students’ design methods. A starting point of the research was a comprehensive literature review of the domain, including in-depth studies of the role of architectural referents in the design learning process, as well as of the integrated design approaches. The findings from these theoretical studies were then confronted with evidence from observations of the students’ design processes when working on a small architectural task. This revealed some discrepancies between the theoretical positions and the teaching practices in the digital architectural studio. The research question was precised in consequence, in order to address them. Specifically, the present research proposes efficient and innovative methods for resolving the discrepancies between theory and teaching practice, based on cognitive aspects of the underlying processes. Focusing on theories of knowledge, learning and design process, we were able to identify some pertinent cognitive strategies for attaining the objectives of this research, namely the necessity for multimodal representation of referents, the importance of representing the process and not only the result, as well as the advantage of motivating the students to work in their ‘zone of proximal development’. As a result of these studies, a complementary design teaching method was defined. It incites the students to perform design explorations based on manipulations of architectural know-how during the conceptual phase of the project. Pedagogic and didactic strategies for the implementation of this method were developed. A prototype of a library of interactive architectural referents (LibReArchI) was created in order to enrich the students’ ‘design space’ and to serve as shared resource between students and tutors. The main results from this research show a positive role of the proposed design teaching method for architectural know-how learning in the digital studio. It was found that this method has the potential to assist some integrated design strategies and to stimulate the generation of ideas. At the theoretical level, we propose a model of one cycle of the conceptual process when performed with digital means. In conclusion, some limitations of the research are mentioned and perspectives for its future development are drawn.
