Résumé :
We review the present understanding of neutrino masses and mixings, discussing what are the unknowns in the three-family oscillation scenario. Despite the anticipated success coming from the planned long baseline neutrino experiments in unraveling the leptonic mixing sector, there are two important unknowns which may remain obscure: the mixing angle θ13 and the CP-phase δ. The measurement of these two parameters has led us to consider the combination of superbeams and neutrino factories as the key to unveil the neutrino oscillation picture.

In view of the recent announcement on nonzero neutrino mass from Super-Kamiokande experiment, it would be very timely to investigate all the possible scenarios on masses and mixings of light neutrinos. Recently suggested mass matrix texture for the quark CKM mixing, which can be originated from the family permutation symmetry and its suitable breakings, is assumed for the neutrino mass matrix and determined by the four combinations of solar, atmospheric and LSND neutrino data and cosmological hot dark matter bound as input constraints. The charged-lepton mass matrix is assumed to be diagonal so that the neutrino mixing matrix can be identified directly as the lepton flavor mixing matrix and no CP invariance violation originates from the leptonic sector. The results favor hierarchical patterns for the neutrino masses, which follow from the case when the solar-atmospheric data is used.

A comprehensive review of several aspects of fermion mixing phenomenon and texture specific mass matrices have been presented. Regarding fermion mixings, implications of unitarity and certain new developments for the CKM paradigm have been discussed. In the leptonic sector, the question of possibility of CP violation has been discussed in detail from the unitarity triangle perspective. In the case of texture specific mass matrices, the issues of viability of Fritzsch-like as well as non-Fritzsch-like mass matrices have been detailed for both the quark and leptonic sectors. The relationship of textures, naturalness and weak basis rotations has also been looked into. The issue of the compatibility of texture specific mass matrices with the SO(10)-based GUT mass matrices has also been discussed.

Extending the Standard Model with sterile (“right-handed”) neutrinos is one of the best motivated ways to account for the observed neutrino masses. We discuss the expected sensitivity of the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) for testing such extensions. An interesting scenario is given by symmetry protected seesaw models, which theoretically allow for sterile neutrino masses around the electroweak scale with up to order one mixings with the active (SM) neutrinos. When the masses of the sterile neutrinos are well above the electroweak scale, they affect precision data via effective non-unitarity of the leptonic mixing matrix in a model independent way. The expected improvement of the electroweak precision observables from the CEPC may allow to test mixings between active and sterile neutrinos down to [Formula: see text] (using currently discussed CEPC performance parameters). For sterile neutrinos with masses around the electroweak scale, direct searches are possible. Such tests are given by the search for sterile neutrino decays at the [Formula: see text] pole, by deviations from the SM cross section for four leptons at and beyond the [Formula: see text] threshold, and by Higgs boson production and decays. The expected sensitivities at the CEPC could reach down to mixings as small as [Formula: see text].

Our previous analysis on the contributions of mirror matter admixtures in ordinary hadrons to KL→γγ is extended to study the relevance of such contributions to the KL→μ+μ-rare decay. The mixing angle of the admixtures previously determined to describe the enhancement phenomenon in two-body non-leptonic decays of strange hadrons is used, along with recent results for the description of the strong and electromagnetic interaction parts of the transition amplitudes. We find that these admixtures give a significant contribution with a small SU(2) breaking of only 2.8%, we also find a value of ~ -17.9° for the η–η′ mixing angle consistent with some of its determinations in the literature and a preferred negative value around -16 for the local counterterm contribution χ1+χ2consistent with the existence of a unique counterterm assuming lepton universality. We conclude that those mixings may be relevant in low energy physics and should not be ignored.

The μ - τ symmetry can reproduce the consistent results with experimental data of θ13, and θ23 (θ13, and θ23 respectively denote the νe - ντ, and νμ - ντ, mixing angles). However, we can not address the issue of the leptonic CP violation in μ - τ symmetric models. So we add the μ - τ symmetry breaking part to include the CP violation. We characterize leptonic CP violation in terms of three phases, where one is conventional phase δ and others are additional phases ρ and γ. These δ, ρ and γ are, respectively, the phases of νe - ντ, νe - νμ and νμ - ντ mixings. The ρ and γ are redundant but the effect of ρ remains in the leptonic CP violation which is characterized by δ + ρ. The δ arises from the μ - τ symmetry breaking part of the Meμ and Meτ while ρ arises from of μ - τ symmetric part of the Meμ and Meτ, where Mij stands for ij (i,j = e,μ,τ) element of M(= [Formula: see text] for Mν being a flavor neutrino mass matrix). Moreover, θ23 can be exactly estimated to be: [Formula: see text] ( sin θ ∝ sin θ13 cos (δ + ρ)[Formula: see text], sin ϕ ∝ Mμμ - Mττ, where [Formula: see text] is the solar neutrino mass difference squared). The conditions of maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing are given by [Formula: see text] and Mμμ = Mττ,which indicate maximal Dirac CP violation.

We propose a renormalizable T′ flavor model based on the [Formula: see text] gauge symmetry, consistent with the observed pattern of lepton masses and mixings. The small masses of the light active neutrinos are produced from an interplay of type I and type II seesaw mechanisms, which are induced by three heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos and three [Formula: see text] scalar antisextets, respectively. Our model is only viable for the scenario of normal neutrino mass hierarchy, where the obtained physical observables of the lepton sector are highly consistent with the current neutrino oscillation experimental data. In addition, our model also predicts an effective Majorana neutrino mass parameter of [Formula: see text] eV, a Jarlskog invariant of the order of [Formula: see text] and a leptonic Dirac CP violating phase of [Formula: see text], which is inside the [Formula: see text] experimentally allowed range.

In the simplest version of a [Formula: see text] flavored supersymmetric model, we analyze the leptonic masses and mixings in the framework of a soft breaking of the [Formula: see text] symmetry. This breaking is controlled by the inequality [Formula: see text] in the effective neutrino mass. As a consequence of this breaking, the reactor and atmospheric angles are deviate from [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], respectively. Such deviations can be enhanced or suppressed by the CP parities in the Majorana phases, so an analytic study is carried out to remark their importance to constrain the free parameters that accommodate the mixing angles. The normal hierarchy is completely discarded in this model, the inverted hierarchy is less favored than the degenerate one where the reactor and atmospheric angles are in good agreement with the experimental data. Additionally, the model predicts defined regions for the effective neutrino mass decay, the neutrino mass scale and the sum of the neutrino masses in the inverted and degenerate mass spectra. Thus, this model may be testable by future experiments that focus on neutrinoless double beta decay.

We revisit the possibility of relating lepton mixing angles with lepton mass hierarchies in a model-independent way. Guided by the existence of such relations in the quark sector, we first consider all the mixing angles, both in charged lepton and neutrino sectors to be related to the respective mass ratios. This allows us to calculate the leptonic mixing angles observed in neutrino oscillations as functions of the lightest neutrino mass. We show that for both normal and inverted hierarchical neutrino masses, this scenario does not give rise to correct leptonic mixing angles. We then show that correct leptonic mixing angles can be generated with normal hierarchical neutrino masses if the relation between mixing angle and mass ratio is restricted to 1–2 and 1–3 mixing in both charged lepton and neutrino sectors leaving the 2–3 mixing angles as free parameters. We then restrict the lightest neutrino mass as well as the difference between 2–3 mixing angles in charged lepton and neutrino sectors from the requirement of producing correct leptonic mixing angles. We constrain the lightest neutrino mass to be around 0.002 eV and leptonic Dirac CP phase [Formula: see text] such that [Formula: see text]. We also construct the leptonic mass matrices in terms of 2–3 mixing angles and lightest neutrino mass and briefly comment on the possibility of realizing texture zeros in the neutrino mass matrix.

The origin of small mixing among the quarks and a large mixing among the neutrinos has been an open question in particle physics. In order to answer this question, we postulate general relations among the quarks and the leptonic mixing angles at a high scale, which could be the scale of Grand Unified Theories. The central idea of these relations is that the quark and the leptonic mixing angles can be unified at some high scale either due to some quark–lepton symmetry or some other underlying mechanism and as a consequence, the mixing angles of the leptonic sector are proportional to that of the quark sector. We investigate the phenomenology of the possible relations where the leptonic mixing angles are proportional to the quark mixing angles at the unification scale by taking into account the latest experimental constraints from the neutrino sector. These relations are able to explain the pattern of leptonic mixing at the low scale and thereby hint that these relations could be possible signatures of a quark–lepton symmetry or some other underlying quark–lepton mixing unification mechanism at some high scale linked to Grand Unified Theories.

In this work, we examine the possible existence of new physics beyond the standard model which could modify the branching fractions of the leptonic (mainly tauonic) decays of bottomonium vector resonances below the [Formula: see text] threshold. The decay width is factorized as the product of two pieces: (a) the probability of an intermediate pseudoscalar color-singlet [Formula: see text] state (coupling to the dominant Fock state of the Upsilon via a magnetic dipole transition) and a soft (undetected) photon; (b) the annihilation width of the [Formula: see text] pair into two leptons, mediated by a non-standard CP-odd Higgs boson of mass about 10 GeV, introducing a quadratic dependence on the lepton mass in the partial width. The process would be unwittingly ascribed to the ϒ leptonic channel thereby (slightly) breaking lepton universality. A possible mixing of the pseudoscalar Higgs and bottomonium resonances is also considered. Finally, several experimental signatures to check out the validity of the conjecture are discussed.

We introduce a 2–3 symmetric structure of the charged lepton mass matrix except for one breaking by the muon mass. Symmetry breaking effects are provided both in the charged lepton and the neutrino sector to produce corrections to the leptonic mixing and explain the recent θ13 measurements. A model that extends the SM by three right-handed neutrinos, an extra Higgs doublet, and multi-singlet scalars is introduced to generate the leptonic mixing.

The CP violation required in leptogenesis may have different origin, but in an effective theory they are all related to the rephasing invariant CP violating measures in the mixing matrix of the leptonic sector. We point out that with our present knowledge of the mixing angles it is possible to estimate the maximum allowed value for all the rephasing invariant measures of CP violation in the leptonic sector. In the effective three-generation scenario there are three CP violating rephasing invariant measures. We show that only one rephasing invariant measure enters the lepton number conserving processes while the other two enter the lepton number violating processes. In the bimaximal mixing case, the lepton number conserving measure of CP violation vanishes while the two lepton number violating rephasing invariant measures of CP violation remain nonzero, which could contribute to the lepton asymmetry of the universe.

Lepton family number violation processes arise in the SU(6) L⊗ U(1) Y model due to the presence of an extra neutral gauge boson, Z′, with family changing couplings, and due to the fact that this model demands the existence of heavy exotic leptons. The mixing of the standard Z with Z′ and the mixing of ordinary leptons with exotic ones induce together family changing couplings on the Z and therefore nonvanishing rates for lepton family number violation processes, such as [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and μ→eγ. Additional contributions to the processes μ→eγ and [Formula: see text] are induced from the mass generation mechanism. This last type of contributions may compete with the above one, depending on the masses of the scalars which participate in the diagrams which generate radiatively the masses of the charged leptons. Using the experimental data we compute some bounds for the mixings parameters and for the masses of the scalars.

The deviations from standard model predictions for the process e+e− → W+W− due to the inclusion of mixing between ordinary and mirror leptons are evaluated for (i) total cross section, (ii) forward-backward asymmetry and (iii) differential cross sections for the production of unpolarized/polarized W's at LEP II [Formula: see text] energy. For the presently known limits on mirror lepton mixings ( sin 2 ψ ≈ 0.02 to 0.06) and heavy mirror neutrinos (m N ≈ 100–300 GeV ), the relative deviations are large (∆ ≈ −2% to −20%). These could possibly allow discerning of mirror lepton mixing effects at LEP II.

The deviations from standard model predictions for the pair production of Z0 at e+e− colliders with the inclusion of mixing between ordinary and exotic leptons are evaluated for (i) the differential cross section and (ii) the longitudinal polarization asymmetry at LEP II [Formula: see text] and at possible the next linear collider [Formula: see text] energies. For heavy exotic leptons (mE ~ 250 GeV) the deviations have distinctive features that could allow the possibility of distinguishing between mirror, vector-doublet and vector-singlet type of exotic lepton mixings.

We realize a model-independent study of the so-called Tri-Bi-Maximal pattern of leptonic flavor mixing. Different charged lepton mass matrix textures are studied. In particular, we are interested in those textures with a minimum number of parameters and that are able to reproduce the current experimental data on neutrino oscillation. The textures studied here form an equivalent class with two texture zeros. We obtain a Tri-Bi-Maximal pattern deviation in terms of the charged leptons masses, leading to a reactor angle and three CP violation phases non-zero. These lastest are one CP violation phase Dirac-like and two phases Majorana-like. Also, we can test the phenomenological implications of the numerical values obtained for the mixing angles and CP violation phases, on the neutrinoless double beta decay, and in the present and upcoming experiments on long-base neutrino oscillation, such as T2K, NOvA, and DUNE.

Processes τ→lγ, τ→lll with l = e, μ and μ(τ) →e (μ) γ are evaluated in the framework of a model based on the extended symmetry gauge SU(3)c ⊗SU(3)L ⊗U(1)Y with a leptonic sector consisting of five triplets. Lepton flavor violating processes are allowed at tree level in this model through the new Z′ gauge boson. We obtained bounds for the mixing angles in the leptonic sector of the model, considering the experimental measurements of the processes from the BELLE and the BABAR collaborations.

In this paper we present a phenomenological analysis of the Partially Aligned Two Higgs Doublet Model (PA-2HDM) by using leptonic decays of mesons and [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text] mixing. We focus our attention in a scenario where the leading contribution to FCNC is given by the tree-level interaction with the light pseudoscalar [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text] GeV). We show how an underlying flavor symmetry controls FCNC in the quark and lepton couplings with the pseudoscalar, without alignment between Yukawa matrices. Upper bounds on the free parameters are calculated in the context of the leptonic decays [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] mixing. Also, our assumptions imply that bounds on New Physics contribution in the quark sector coming from [Formula: see text] mixing impose an upper bound on the parameters for the leptonic sector. Finally we give predictions of branching ratios for leptonic decay of mesons with FCNC and LFV.

The background processes of the flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) processes, predicted by various new-physics models to occur in the presence of nuclei, are examined by computing the relevant nuclear matrix elements within the context of the quasi-particle RPA using realistic strong two-body forces. Our main goal is to explore the role of the non-standard interactions (NSI) in the leptonic sector and specifically: (i) in lepton flavour violating (LFV) processes involving neutrinos νl and ν ̃l, l = e, μ, τ and (ii) in charged lepton flavour violating (cLFV) processes involving the charged leptons l− or l+. As concrete nuclear system we have chosen the stopping target of μ− → e− conversion experiment, i.e. the 48Ti nucleus of the PRIME/PRISM experiment at J-PARC. This experiment has been designed to reduce the single event sensitivity down to 10−16–10−18 in searching for charged lepton mixing events. We also present, stringent constraints on the flavour violating parameters entering the NSI Lagrangians that have been obtained by taking advantage of our detailed nuclear structure calculations and exploiting the present limits or the sensitivity of the proposed exotic μ− → e− experiments.

In a recent experiment, the measured lifetime of the tau lepton suggests that the e-µ universality may not hold in the case of the third-generation leptons. It is shown here that the universality of weak interactions can be restored by invoking the existence of a fourth generation of quarks and leptons, and by mixing the τ-lepton with the charged lepton of the fourth generation by a Cabibbo-like mixing angle. Agreement between the experimentally measured lifetime and the theoretical value as predicted by the standard SU (2) L × U (1) model on the basis of universality of weak interactions requires the cosine of the Cabbibo-like mixing angle (ϕ) to be | cos ϕ|=0.96±0.02.

Recently, we proposed a unified mass matrix model for quarks and leptons, in which, mass ratios and mixings of the quarks and neutrinos are described by using only the observed charged lepton mass values as family-number-dependent parameters and only six family-number-independent free parameters. In spite of quite few parameters, the model gives remarkable agreement with observed data (i.e. Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa (CKM) mixing, Pontecorvo–Maki–Nakagawa–Sakata (PMNS) mixing and mass ratios). Taking this phenomenological success seriously, we give a formulation of the so-called Yukawaon model in detail from a theoretical aspect, especially for the construction of superpotentials and R charge assignments of fields. The model is considerably modified from the previous one, while the phenomenological success is kept unchanged.

We discuss a model based on μ ↔ τ symmetry acting in the lepton sector, which leads to maximal atmospheric mixing angle and θ13 = 0. We show that in the symmetric limit the lepton asymmetry ∊l of the universe can be given in a simple form in terms of the neutrino oscillation parameters. We also find that for the case of two right handed neutrinos ∊l, constrain the symmetry breaking parameter θ13 to be in range 0.1 to 0.2 depending on the leptonic CP violation phase.

I discuss some aspects of future prospects of the experimental exploration of the unknowns in the neutrino mass pattern and the lepton flavor mixing. I start from measuring θ13 by reactors and accelerators as a prerequisite for proceeding to search for leptonic CP violation. I then discuss how CP violation can be uncovered, and how the neutrino mass hierarchy can be determined. I do these by resolving so called the "parameter degeneracy" which is required anyway if one wants to seek precision measurement of the lepton mixing parameters. As a concrete setting for resolving the degeneracy I use the Tokai-to-Kamioka-Korea two detector complex which receives neutrino superbeam from J-PARC, which is sometimes called as "T2KK". It is shown that T2KK is able to resolve all the eight-fold parameter degeneracy in a wide range of the lepton mixing parameters. Some alternative ways of measuring the unknowns are also briefly mentioned.

In the minimal 3-3-1 model charged leptons come in a nondiagonal basis. Moreover, the Yukawa interactions of the model lead to a non-hermitian charged lepton mass matrix. In other words, the minimal 3-3-1 model presents a very complex lepton mixing. In view of this we check rigorously if the possible textures of the lepton mass matrices allowed by the minimal 3-3-1 model can lead or not to the neutrino mixing required by the recent experiments in neutrino oscillation.

In the context of a typical model for fermion mass matrices, possibly based on the horizontal U (2) symmetry, we explore the effect of the type II seesaw mechanism on lepton mixings. We find that the combined contribution of type I and type II terms is able to explain the large but not maximal 1-2 mixing and the near maximal 2-3 mixing, while the 1-3 mixing angle is predicted to be small.

I argue that LHC may shed light on the nature of neutrino mass through the probe of the seesaw mechanism. The smoking gun signature is lepton number violation through the production of same sign lepton pairs, a collider analogy of the neutrinoless double beta decay. I discuss this in the context of left–right symmetric theories, which led originally to neutrino mass and the seesaw mechanism. A WR gauge boson with a mass in a few TeV region could easily dominate neutrinoless double beta decay, and its discovery at LHC would have spectacular signatures of parity restoration and lepton number violation. Moreover, LHC can measure the masses of the right-handed neutrinos and the right-handed leptonic mixing matrix, which could in turn be used to predict the rates for neutrinoless double decay and lepton flavor violating violating processes. The LR scale at the LHC energies offers great hope of observing these low energy processes in the present and upcoming experiments.

Abstract We present a simple extension of the Standard Model with three right-handed neutrinos in a SUSY framework, with an additional U(1)F abelian flavor symmetry with a non standard leptonic charge for lepton doublets and arbitrary right-handed charges. We show how it is possible to provide the correct predictions for the mixing angles of the PMNS matrix and for the r = Δ m sun 2 / Δ m atm 2 parameter with a moderate fine tuning. The baryon asymmetry of the Universe is generated via thermal leptogenesis through CP-violating decays of the heavy right-handed neutrinos. We present a detailed numerical solution of the relevant Boltzmann equation accounting for the impact of the distribution of the asymmetry in the lepton flavors.

The standard electroweak model with Dirac neutrinos is extended by way of the principles of electroweak quark–lepton symmetry and weak topological-charge confinement to account for quark–lepton charge relations which, if not accidental, are indicative of charge structures. A mixing in quarks and leptons of underlying integer local charges with integer weak topological charges associated with an additive group Z3, fixed by the anomaly cancellation requirement, is discussed. It is found that the electroweak difference between topological quarks and leptons is the nonequivalence between the topological vacua of their weak field configurations, produced by a four-instanton which carries the topological charge, induces the universal fractional piece of charge distinguishing quarks from leptons, and breaks the underlying symmetry. The constituent quarks of the standard model appear as coming from topological quarks, via the weak four-instanton event. Dual transitions occur for leptons. It is shown that several other fundamental problems left open in the standard electroweak model with Dirac neutrinos are solved: the one-to-one correspondence between quark and lepton flavors, the existence of three generations, the conservation and ungauging of B-L, the electric charge quantization, and the confinement of fractional electric charges.

Within the Standard Model, using the facility of making Weak Basis transformations, attempt has been made to examine the most general mass matrices within the texture zero approach. For the case of quarks, interestingly, one finds a particular set of texture four zero quark mass matrices emerging out to be a unique viable option for the description of quark mixing data as well as for accommodation of CP violation. Similarly, general lepton mass matrices, essentially considered as texture zero mass matrices, yield interesting bounds on the CP violating Jarlskog’s rephasing invariant parameter in the leptonic sector.

The lepton-charge (Le, Lμ, Lτ) nonconserving interaction leads to the mixing of the electron, muon and tau neutrinos, which manifests itself in spatial oscillations of a neutrino beam, and also to the mixing of the electron, negative muon and tau lepton, which, in particular, may be the cause of the "forbidden" radiative decay of the negative muon into the electron and γ quantum. Under the assumption that the nondiagonal elements of the mass matrices for neutrinos and ordinary leptons, connected with the lepton charge nonconservation, are the same, and by performing the joint analysis of the experimental data on neutrino oscillations and experimental restriction for the probability of the decay μ- → e- + γ per unit time, the following estimate for the lower bound of neutrino mass has been obtained: [Formula: see text].

We discuss the mass matrices with texture zeros for the quarks and leptons. The flavor mixing angles for the quarks are functions of the quark masses and can be calculated. The results agree with the experimental data. The texture zero mass matrices for the leptons and the see-saw mechanism are used to derive relations between the matrix elements of the lepton mixing matrix and the ratios of the neutrino masses. Using the measured neutrino mass differences, the neutrino masses can be calculated. The neutrinoless double beta decay is discussed. The effective Majorana neutrino mass, describing the neutrinoless double beta decay, can be calculated—it is about 4.6 meV. The present experimental limit is at least twenty times larger.

In this paper we consider a plausible scenario with conserved lepton number L = Le-Lμ-Lτwithin the framework of the exact solution of a particular 3-3-1 gauge model. We discuss the consequences of conserving this global leptonic symmetry from the viewpoint of the neutrino mass matrix constructed via special Yukawa terms (involving tensor products among Higgs triplets). We prove that the actual experimental data can naturally be reproduced by our scenario since soft breaking terms with respect to this lepton symmetry are properly introduced. As a consequence, our solution predicts for the neutrino sector the correct mass splitting ratio [Formula: see text], the inverted mass hierarchy, the correct values for the observed mixing angles ( sin2θ23≃0.5 and sin2θ12= 0.31) and the absolute mass of the lightest neutrino (m0~ 0.001 eV) independent of the breaking scale of the model.

We study the pair production of new heavy leptons within a new U(1)′ symmetry extension of the Standard Model. Because of the new symmetry, the production and decay modes of the new heavy leptons would be different from those of three families of the standard model. The pair production cross-sections depending on the mixing parameter and the mass of heavy leptons have been calculated for the center-of-mass energies of 0.5 TeV, 1 TeV and 3 TeV. The accessible ranges of the parameters have been obtained for different luminosity projections at linear colliders. The search can be performed within the range of mixing parameter -1<x<-0.35 and 0.05<x<1, given that the heavy lepton mass Ml′ = 400 GeV at [Formula: see text] and L int = 100 fb -1. We find the sensitivity to the range of mixing parameter -1<x<1 for the mass range Ml′<800 GeV at [Formula: see text] and L int = 100 fb -1.
