Texte intégralThe weapons from the main collection from La Tène (impact and thrusting weapons, lances, projectiles/throwing spears, shields) have been analysed for use-wear. Due to the anaerobic conditions, the pieces at the Laténium are largely well preserved, with many bearing a simple patina. This PhD thesis combines chronotypology, experimental archaeology, «ethnoarchaeology» and forensics to answer the following question : is it possible by examining the traces visible on the objects from La Tène and other sites to as certain whether the weapons were put beyond use deliberately, as part of a ritual, or did it occur during combat ? The objective is not to deduce the function of the enigmatic site (sanctuary, monument to a military victory,…) but to find ways of interpreting it

Texte intégralThe presented study analyses on the example of Bohemia the question in what extent the creation of oppida (and more broadly the cultural transformation of the Transalpine world in the recent La Tène period) were influenced by Mediterranean impulses and to what extent they may be on the other hand considered as a local phenomenon. The historical and chronological background are studied in detail, the question itself is approached by an analysis of the corpus of Mediterranean imports in central Europe intended to evaluate the role of Bohemia (within the central European context) in the contacts with the Mediterranean. In the concluding chapter the oppida and their settlement systems are confronted with the Mediterranean towns. The contacts with the Mediterranean turn out to have been constant and significant for the Transalpine word, the oppida, however, seem to be a largely local phenomenon
Thesis, Strasbourg, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016STRAG020.
Texte intégralDuring the Antiquity, the space between the Moselle and the Rhine is an area in which many historical events occured. Those events successively changed its administrative and political organization. This dissertation aims to study, through spatial, model, and comparative approaches, the evolution of the settlement of four micro-regions within a vast space between the I. c. BC to the V c. AD. In these frameworks, the shape and dynamics of the habitat, the structuring spaces they generate, and finally, the establishment choices of the settlements are consecutively studied. The results highlight the diversity of habitat types, spatial patterns and dynamics. The countrysides are not uniform and the mechanisms influencing the formation and the trajectory of the different types of perceived patterns are complex. They equally depend from many local factors and from the global historical phenomenon. The variety of cases described in this dissertation enables us to see that the countrysides are following several long evolution processes. The latter do not begin or finish on the borders of the defined historical periods
Lemort, Sophie. « Analyse spatiale intrasite de l'habitat : méthodologie, procédures et études de cas : les sites protohistohistoriques de Bucy-le-Long "la Foselle" 'Aisne, Néolithique ancien), et de Changis-sur-Marne "les Pétreaux" (Seine-et-Marne, Âges du Bronze et du Fer) ». Thesis, Paris 1, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PA01H079.
Texte intégralIntra-site spatial analysis of settlement does not allow use of general model applicable to any archaeological site. However some items have similar habitat settlement profiles. Can we consider looking for protocols transposable to usual settlement sites? The purpose of this study is based on an exploratory approach, on two protohistoric settlements. On the Bandkeramik site of Bucy-le-Long "la Fosselle", the analysis focuses on spatial distribution of the material remains within comparable architectural units. Data analysis is used to determine different study parameters. The informative potential of housing units, established according to morphological and taphonomic criteria, is evaluated and compared with the archaeological potential, determined from the richness of the furniture and the different categories of artifacts. The global intra-site analysis is made by grouping the furniture by functional category, to highlight significant assemblages of vestiges according to the dwellings. They allow to characterize and to segment the significant sets of food and technical activities at the site scale, based on houses partitioning. The site of Changis-sur-Marne "les Pétreaux" having suffered a long occupation from the Late bronze to the Early la Tène period, lead to a difficult reading of the settlements. During excavation spatial analysis is tried on structures groups. Then, the distribution of furniture is studied at various observation scales. However, those first divisions do not reflect groups of obvious rural settlements. A partitioning of the structures within smaller spatial entities is then engaged starting from the search for aggregates, highlighted by the space-time hot spot analysis. The dynamic of occupation of the site is thus more easily perceptible. Two case studies are finally challenged with other spatial studies about settlement sites. In addition to the material remains commonly seen as reference in the intra-site spatial analysis of settlement, archaeological structures find all their places

Texte intégralThis archaeozoological study investigates morphological variations in different skeletal parts of the pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) according to two main assumptions: (1) the morphological changes of the animal reflect socio-economic changes; (2) there is a great diversity of pig’s forms, driven by different factors (environment, agropastoral strategies, cultural habits, etc.). Our analysis, based on these assumptions, tends to quantify and describe these changes and this diversification to try to understand their origin and mechanisms. For this we have observed the dental and skeletal remains of more than 600 archaeological sites, located on the Gallic, French and Italian territories, dated from La Tène moyenne to the modern period, using different methods of geometric and traditional morphometrics. In this way, we were able to build a strong osteometric framework for pigs and get new clues to a better understanding of farming practices for Gallic, Roman and medieval periods

J.-C. - Ier siècle ap. J.-C.) ». Thesis, Strasbourg, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015STRAG016/document.
Texte intégralFor the last two centuries before our era, italic type objects, which means objects that are characterizing the material culture of Tardo-republican Italia, are progressively appearing in Gaul. The identification of these everyday objects and their typological and contextual analysis allow a renewed approach of the Gaul romanization phenomenon. The objective of this thesis is to highlight, the chronological, spatial and cultural modalities of the diffusion of such furniture. The comparison of the results with the data provided by the ceramological and architectural studies allows to improve the description of the acculturation process. The behavioral diversity towards the reception of exogenous furniture is underlined by the nature of the sites and the diversity of the considered objects. Local elites, whether by participating in commercial exchanges or by joining the army, have played a major role in the interactions with Italia, from the diffusion of these objects to the integration of the new italic models
Ritz, Simon. « Senon-Amel (Meuse) : contribution d’une agglomération bipolaire à l’histoire du fait urbain dans le nord-est de la Gaule, du second âge du Fer au haut Moyen Âge ». Thesis, Université de Lorraine, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020LORR0164.
Texte intégralInterdisciplinary investigations combining prospection techniques (field survey, aerial photography, geophysics, Li¬DAR) and excavations (preventive and university-led excavations) have been carried out for almost 15 years on the ar¬chaeological site of Senon-Amel. They have revealed the bipolarity of this roman town, which is split into two urban cen¬tres located 1.5 km apart, simultaneously inhabited during most of the Antiquity, from the middle of the 1st century A.D. to the middle of the 4th century at least. This urban layout is very unusual among the roman towns of northern Gaul and thus needs to be explained. Its most striking feature is the duplication of public monuments: both urban centres include temples, public baths and a theatre. This thesis discusses the origin and evolution of the bipolar frame. It highlights the role of the integration of Gallic civitates into the roman provincial administration, and the impact of a religious economy in the shap¬ing of the city. These processes obviously have an interest per se – they contribute to illustrate the varied origins of urban features in norther Gaul –, but they also have broader implications. Indeed, the closeness of the two urban centres allows us to study quite precisely their specific features and their origins, thanks to the consistency of the documentation. This comparison reveals two very different urban trajectories: broadly speaking, evidence suggests that Senon was preceded by an Iron Age settlement, which stayed occupied during the roman period and expanded thanks to the existence of a wide range of crafts and trade activities. On the other hand, Amel seems to have been created at the beginning of the Empire as a sanctuary, which only later aggregated dwelling houses and other private facilities. The juxtaposition of these two urban entities is very unusual, but the mechanisms that drove their setting-up and further evolution are certainly common to many other roman towns. As a result, the case study of Senon-Amel evidences processes that are of more general significance
Le, Huray Jonathan D., et Holger Schutkowski. « Diet and Social Status During the Tène Period in Bohemia - Carbon and Nitrogen Stable Isotope Analysis of Bone Collagen from Kutná Hora-Karlov and Radovesice ». 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/3856.
Texte intégralBone collagen carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios were obtained from three La Tène period inhumation cemeteries in the Czech Republic (Kutná Hora-Karlov, Radovesice I and Radovesice II) and 16 Hallstatt period inhumations in northern Austria. Results indicate that during the La Tène period in Bohemia, overall diet was based on animal protein and plant foods following the C3 photosynthetic pathway, although ¿13C values for two individuals from Kutná Hora-Karlov indicate at least some contribution from C4 plant foods, most likely millet. At Kutná Hora-Karlov, more positive ¿15N values for male individuals buried with items of iron weaponry indicate the existence of a differential dietary system within the male population based on individual ¿warrior¿ status. A comparison with data from a number of Hallstatt period inhumations in northern Austria and a previously published study of a Hallstatt period site in Slovenia [Murray, M.L., Schoeninger, M.J., 1988. Diet, status, and complex social structure in Iron Age Central Europe: Some contributions from bone chemistry. In: Gibson, D.B., Geselowitz, M.N. (Eds.), Tribe and Polity in Late Prehistoric Europe: Demography, Production and Exchange in the Evolution of Complex Social Systems. Plenum Press, New York, pp. 155¿176] enables an examination of the spread of millet as a major dietary component. This data will be of use to studies of diet in prehistoric Europe and provides evidence for dietary divisions relating to social stratification during the La Tène B¿C, a period often seen as less complex than the preceding Hallstatt period.

Texte intégralSince their discovery in the 19th century the enclosures from the Late Latène period, named „Viereckschanzen“ by german archaeologists, have been interpreted as cult places, as farmsteads or even as fortifications. By comparing 34 enclosures of the Late Iron Age from Northern France and Southern Germany, this paper thus pursues two objectives: firstly, to determine which of the sites can be identified as sacred or as profane; secondly, to show the similarities and differences between the enclosures in both regions.
