Lazzaretti M, Morandotti N, Sala M, Isola M, Frangou S, De Vidovich G, Marraffini E, Gambini F, Barale F, Zappoli F, Caverzasi E, Brambilla P. Impaired working memory and normal sustained attention in borderline personality disorder. Objective: Although reports in the literature describe deficits in working memory in borderline personality disorder (BPD), the evidence is limited and inconsistent. The aim of this study was to evaluate further this cognitive dimension and its clinical correlates in BPD.Method: We compared the performance of 15 BPD patients to 1:1 matched healthy controls on verbal working memory as determined by the sequential letter N-back test and sustained attention as measured using the continuous performance test (CPT).Results: BPD patients performed significantly worse on the N-back test compared to healthy controls (p < 0.05), but not on the CPT. The N-back deficit was more pronounced and significant in the 3-back condition and inversely correlated with impulsivity. Conclusions: These results suggest the presence of working memory deficits in BPD that may be linked to greater impulsivity and sustained by impairment in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.

Legal proclamations show that during the 1630 plague outbreak in Bologna, Italy, women were required to remain quarantined in their homes for the duration of the epidemic while men remained mobile. However, primary texts and visual sources demonstrate that despite these legal restrictions, women remained active players in the fight against the plague by circumventing regulations. Significantly, women played a key role in sustaining the Bolognese economy, in particular by travelling to work in the silk industry. Moreover, while male doctors enjoyed special dispensations to avoid visiting the sick directly, female nurses left their homes to care for the daily needs of patients in the lazzaretto, the plague hospital. Artworks and primary texts depict a mobile woman. They show women from the poorest of backgrounds who were compelled to move through the city’s public spaces, remaining active in the street life of the plagued city. For instance, along with unlicensed women healers and nuns, prostitutes commonly volunteered for service in the plague hospitals. This required a brief shift in the social status of these women as they moved from their brothels to the pestilent walls of the lazzaretto. This paper will address the contribution that these resilient women made to maintaining the family economy and the significant positions women held in administering care, which have been overlooked in the scholarship. It will argue that by performing these essential activities, Bolognese women enjoyed an increase in physical but also social mobility, albeit short-lived.

Résumé :
The article examines the theme of spiritual transformation in three poets (Lazzarelli, Augurelli, Mantuanus) writing in the context of hermeticism, alchemy and monastic spirituality. Building on current scholarship on Western Esotericism and religious pluralism, the article argues that: 1) whether it occurs in hermetic, alchemical, or hagiographical contexts, spiritual transformation is characterized by recurring linguistic features and motifs consistent with Antoine Faivre’s definition of esotericism; 2) the presence of spiritual transformation and its corresponding language outside of proper esoteric contexts, suggests approaching this theme as a discursive strategy, whose features correspond to von Stuckrad’s definition of ‘language of experiential knowledge’. In a dialogue with Michel Foucault and Pierre Hadot, the article suggests taking this phenomenon as part of the Renaissance rediscovery of philosophy as a way of life, and an instance of a broader notion of spirituality.

Résumé :
Abstract. The fate of coastal marshlands in the near future will strongly depend on their capability to maintain their elevation above a rising mean sea level. Together with the deposition of inorganic sediments during high tides, organic soil production by halophytic vegetation, and organic matter decomposition, land subsidence due to natural soil compression is a major factor controlling the actual elevation of salt-marsh platforms. Due to their high porosity and compressibility, the marsh sedimentary body undergoes large compression because of the load of overlying more recent deposits. The characterization of the geotechnical properties of these deposits is therefore of paramount importance to quantify consolidation versus accretion and relative sea level rise. However, undisturbed sampling of this loose material is extremely challenging and lab tests on in-situ collected samples are not properly representative of in-situ conditions due to the scale effects in highly heterogeneous silty soils such as those of the Venice lagoon. To overcome this limitation, an in-situ loading test was carried out in the Lazzaretto Nuovo salt-marsh in the Venice Lagoon, Italy. The load is obtained by a number of plastic tanks that are filled with seawater, reaching a cumulative load of 40 kN applied on a 2.5×1.8 m2 surface. Specific instrumentations were deployed before positioning the tanks to measure soil vertical displacement at various depths below the load (0, 10, and 50 cm) and distances (0, 40, and 80 cm) from the load centre. Moreover, six pressure transducers were used to record overpressure dissipation over time. The collected datasets will be interpreted through a 3-D flow-deformation model that, once calibrated, provides reliable estimates of the compressibility values for each monitored depth interval.

Résumé :
Abstract Objective Culturally and linguistically appropriate neuropsychological assessments for the large number of primary Spanish speakers in the United States remain imperative to serve the needs of this underserved population. As part of a larger co-norming project, we generated demographically adjusted norms for the Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-revised (BVMT-R) and the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-revised (HVLT-R) for use with native Spanish speakers from the U.S.-Mexico border regions. Participants and Method Participants were 202 healthy native Spanish speakers recruited in San Diego, CA and Tucson, AZ, ages 19 to 60, with education ranging from 0-20 years, and 59% women. Test stimuli for the HVLT-R and instructions for both tests were adapted into Spanish by a team of native Spanish speakers from multiple countries using standard procedures (Cherner et al., 2007). Raw scores for the various learning and delayed recall outcomes were converted to T-scores using fractional polynomial equations accounting for effects of education, age, and sex. We then computed the rates of impairment that would be obtained when applying the original published norms for these two tests, and compared these results to the expected rate of impairment of -1SD (around 16%) derived from the normal distribution of T-scores in our new, demographically corrected norms. Results Results showed significant overestimation of impairment when applying the original norms for non-Hispanic English speakers to our Spanish-speaking sample, ranging from 35-38% for HVLT-R and 25-26% for BVMTR. As expected, these overestimations of impairment were greater for individuals with lower education, but our demographically corrected norms reduced the rate of impairment for all levels of education. Conclusions These findings highlight the urgent need to account for demographic effects on neuropsychological performance in order to improve the diagnostic accuracy of our measures when applied to US-dwelling Spanish speakers. Résumé :
The prevalence of ADHD children increases every year. Some researchers have shown that psychosocial behavior therapy (antecedents-consequences modification) was effective to decrease hyperactivity and increase attention to ADHD children. This study aims to find out the effectiveness of antecedents-consequences modification by parents and teachers to decrease hyperactivity and increase attention to a 6 years old boy with ADHD. The study was a single case experimental design. Psychosocial behavior therapy has been used with antecedents-consequences modification. The antecedents-consequences modification was applied by teacher at school and parents at home. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results showed that there’s a significant decrease of hyperactivity behavior and significant increase of doing his assignment both at school and also at home. Not only about the content of behavior therapy itself, but how to give the therapy is important. Parents and teacher should do the therapy consistently, immediately, specifically and saliency to reach the target of intervention. Résumé :
The Middle and Upper Jurassic sequence near Foza (Asiago plateau; Venetian Alps) is characterized by important hiatuses. The relevant deposits are furthermore often found as sedimentary dikes, filling up fractures in the underlying carbonatic platform of the Calcari Grigi, Middle Liassic in age in the uppermost levels. The normal Middle and Upper Jurassic sequence includes, aver the Calcari Grigi the following formations: Lower Rosso Ammonitico Veronese and "Lumachella a Posidonia alpina", both Middle Jurassic in age; "Scisti ad Aptici", Upper Rosso Ammonitico Veronese and the basal part of the "Biancone", Upper Jurassic in age. In the Foza area the stratigraphic sequence changes quite rapidly in very short distances, with hiatuses involving one or more of the above mentioned formations. The presence of these hiatuses and of sedimentary dikes is in agreement with the location of the studied area near the edge of the "Trento plateau" during the Jurassic. A fossil assemblage was collected from a sedimentary dike near Lazzaretti of Foza. It consists of Brachiopods, Belemnites, Bivalves and Crinoid remains. Brachiopods are prevailing both in specimens and species number; among them 6 species, even if generally poorly preserved have been determined and described.

Résumé :
The unpublished letters of Carlo Ermes Visconti (1834-1911) goad a further investigation on the architectural events discussed in Milan during the last decades of the nineteen century, especially, referring to the Lazzaretto and the restoration of the Sforza Castle. The correspondence of the marquis Visconti, with Luca Beltrami, Gaetano Negri and Giovanni Celoria, at least, shows the nature of his relationship with the cultural and political milieu he attended supporting a deeper analysis of his profile, not only the biographic one. Contents and correlations singled out throught this documents among figures, actions and circumstances allow a few remarks and some new perspectives about his opinion on restoration and preservation of the ancient buildings and, furthermore, the role he played in the settlement of civic collections and museums, being these topics different part of a same goal.

Klazomen Tahaffuzhanesi’nin yer aldığı Karantina Ada’sında yapılan incelemelerde elde edilen veriler öncelikle arşiv ve literatür incelemeleri karşılaştırılmış, elde edilen sonuçlar karantina işlevine yönelik mimari yapılanmaların genel özellikleri üzerinden yorumlanarak Klazomen Tahaffuzhanesi’nin 19. yüzyıldaki özgün yapılanması “yer seçimi”, “yerleşim şeması” ve “iç mekân kurgusu” üzerinden tanımlanmıştır.

Résumé :
Abstract Plague is an epidemic-prone infectious disease that has affected humanity with catastrophic effects throughout almost its entire history. One of the most intriguing questions of the last years is whether plague kills indiscriminately. To address the question regarding pre-existent health conditions, this study aims to assess the overall frailty of plague victims and compare it with a sample of non-plague victims from the same period and area. Frailty was assessed using the biological index of frailty (BIF) on two skeletal series dated to the seventeenth century from north-eastern Italy: one of plague victims from the Imola’s Lazzaretto (n = 93) and another from an attritional cemetery located in Ravenna (n = 58). Comparisons between the BIF values of the two samples were performed separately by sex and age classes. Cox proportional hazards regression was conducted to analyze factors associated with the risk of dying from plague. The age-adjusted ANCOVA test revealed no significant differences in BIF results between the two samples. However, according to Cox’s regression, individuals in the lowest BIF category (the least frail) had a significantly higher hazard of dying from plague. Although we found no differences between the mean frailty values of plague and non-plague victims in the univariate analysis, individuals with a low level of frailty showed a higher hazard of dying from plague than from other causes. In fact, otherwise healthier individuals (i.e., with low levels of frailty) could be found only among plague victims.

ReferênciasKahouli I, Malhotra M, Westfall S, Alaoui-Jamali MA, Prakash S. Résumé :
Coming to the modern age and deep inside the national unification of the 19. century, Milan mantained the highest ranking of urban populating in Europe. This can be explained considering the fact that this town has continued to be a strategical point of intersection between the Po Valley and the Alps, thanks to its integration in a regional context characterized by the factors of economic cohesion which kept it together, more than by the political borders in which it was splitted. Also because this occured inside a populating setting that made Milan a kind of “magnet” of one among the most urbanized areas in Europe. To make it such was at that point a review course of the economic hub around which the town moved, caused by the different treatment reserved since 1781 to the part within the townwall compared to its suburb (Corpi Santi) and overtaken also from a custom point of view only in 1898. It was exactly in this suburban area, the largest of the town limits, that in second half of the nineteenth century a process of productive differentiation occurred culminating with the settlemnent of the most important section of the modern local industry. Here developed a strong immigration that the agricultural crisis of the 80s couldn’t stop. And here again under its influence, an incredibly “building fever” had increased. The expansion of buildings had linked with the big building construction and urban works carried out within the townwall as the area of the ex Lazzaretto or the ex Piazza d’Armi. The companies and banks that had carried them out had been affected by the sector crisis originating in Milan after 1890, nevertheless with effect far less disruptive than in Rome. Effects limited less by the rescue packages of the Milan Municipality for the Subsidy Fund of Builder, than by a kind of banking system well prepared to the distribution of commercial credit or anyway against collateral, mostly if land guarantee. However it was high time for Milan to enter in a financial circuit with strenghts in the foundation of two new mixed banks as Comit and Credit. Therefore, under the patronage of the german capital and investing in a custom policy increasingly oriented in a protectionist step, the conditions were created to the raise of a fully modern industrialized Milan, even if achieved in a very unusual way, attributed to the model of “sequential expansions” sketched out long ago by Gino Luzzato e recalled lately by Luciano Cafagna.
